Steve Carlson was one of the Hanson Brothers from the 1977 Classic "Slap Shot" and he talks about being a roommate to Wayne Gretzky to talking about how he teaches certain Hockey techniques to kids today. Yeah, now you know the movie slap Shot. You're one
of the Hansom brothers or Steve Hanson. I think it
was the origin. I think of some other great movies,
like the movie Major League and also Ted Lasso, the
TV series. There's a bunch of other movies because the
same type of storyline as the movie Slap Shot.

Well, actually not really, because Jeff, just to make it
everything clear, the movie is based on three Carls from
brothers that played in Johnston, Pennsylvania for the Johnson Jets.
We're at the Farm Tuman in Minnesota fighting Saints of
the World.

We all, me and my two books all had long
hair and black glasses, and we wore safety glasses when
we played.

And I wasn't one of them. I was kind of
a tough guy.

But my two brothers were the enforcers and we played
as the line and a lot of that stuff in
the movie is actually happened. You know, we went to
the stands and got arrested. We did jump a team
in warm ups. That's the way the game used to
be played. It's the old Broadstreet Bully type of days
where when the puckers dropped, the gloves came off.

Also, yeah, was it actually when I was reading about
the synopsis of it on the IMDb, they were calling it.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
They called it goon hockey? Is that what they called it?
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Well, they called it boon hockey.

But I call it enforces because you know, when you
had back in those days, you had your superstars like
the Gretzki's and the g Lafloor's and all that stuff,
and you had to have and Bobby Clark for the
flyers and all that stuff, Bill Barber, you had to
have the enforcers to protect them because back in those days,
when you had the puck. When you had the puck, you.

Had to be hit.

You know, that was the game.

Yea yeah, and if a fight break, but so be it.
That's the way he used to be played.

but uh it was pretty studying hockey. And uh that's
why I really look forward to the playoff hockey because
that they the rfee puts their whistle away and that's
the way they go back to the old time, the
way he used to be played.

I heard I read in your bio that you were
your roommates with him and also played with the Edmonton Oilers.

I did play with the Edmonds because when Gretzky played,
when he first started pro with the Indianapolis Racers, they
folded after about a month and a half. Two months
into the season, and Gretzky, Eddie Meal and Peter Driscoll
was traded to the Vonton Oilers. And I was up
in Edmonton planer and he with my roommate for a
little bit there.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Wow wow. And then later on you played for the
Los Angeles Kings. How is that? Well?
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Skip friends?
Speaker 3 (03:09):
You know, you know when I'm from northern Minnesota and
in LA. You know, when you come on the hockey
rink and you got all these fans that really don't
know the game very well. They would say, you know,
the game was really great, but you got to stage
those fights a little better. They really didn't understand the
game very much.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
But like I said, it's changed a lot.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
And also just one more added information is I also
centered Gordie Howard Mark how with the now Wavers.

Oh wow, wow, man.

Seem I'm one of six players that played with Gretzky
and Gordie Howe.

Wow that man, you need to write a book. I
swear I.

Got over one hundred page dis already written. But I'll
give you a good example of how good Cody Howard
Mark how was I centered them? And when I first
got underline, I said, Steve, going planner in net, stick
on the ape and point your blade towards the net
and we'll shoot it off your stick to go in
the net. I got four goals that week.

What are your thoughts about that?
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Well, Jeff, I just want to add one more thing
to this. I've been watching the Paralympics right now in
the United States. Just beat China this morning seven to one.
They're going for the gold also, so we're going for
a three way sweep this year in an Olympics. So
I tell you I watched the Paralympics, that I met them,
I've been on the ice with them.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
These guys and gals are so talented. It's unbelievable what
they can do.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
On the ice with the whole blade touching the ice.
You know, they were supposed to win the Gold and
Canada Game. A good run for it, United States. You
know they say the United States is coming back. We
never left because you look at the last Olympics, they
beat us in overtime. You look at the Four Nations, they.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Beat us in overtime.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
It wasn't like they're comedy of we've caught them. And
right now I would say, I'm not saying that we're
better than they are, but we're really really darn close. Wow.

was a great coach and also with the Bishop McCourt
High School where you won five state titles and now
you run it's called Steve Carlson Hockey.

Tell me a little bit about that.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Well, we're looking at that. We won four state championships,
two years in a row. We were undefeated. It was
pretty interesting because my last year I coached the Bishop
McCourt High School team, we had thirteen freshmen two seniors
and two juniors, and we finished. We finished eighth in
the in the league. We put we're playing number one
seed in the in the conference. And I told him,
(06:06):
I said, if we go run and govern with these guys,
they're going to kick guard. But so I taught my
players how to play the left wing trap. You know,
nothing really works out as a coach, nothing really works
out as you planned. So I told him, I said,
let me bitness game for the first two and a
half periods.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
We're going to play uh left wing trap.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
And with five minutes left in the game, I said,
I'm going to call time out.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
We're going to go and we're going.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
To start attacking him. I said, when we score, don't celebrate,
come right back to the bench, and we're going to
go back to the left wing trap. There was nothing,
nothing with five minutes left.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
The game, but called time out.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
I said, okay, let's attack them because they're not going
to expect its.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Sheers heck jeff bam. We went and scored a goal.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
We read them one nothing. We went on to win
the state championship. It was pretty interesting because I said,
as a coach, you can you can diagram it.

You can put exs and o's all over.

It never worked. It's got to do after your mistake
is very crucial. But it was fun. Steve Carlson Hockey.
I ran power skating causes. If you can't skate, you
can't play. I tell you play. These young kids, five
six seven year olds, learn to skate. Don't put a
puck on an egge. Learn to skate because if you

can't skate, you can't play. You got to get point
A to point B quickly and your skills you can.
You can stick here in the basement with a tennis
ball all you want, but you can't skate in the basement.

So these kids have to learn how to skate.

Now of course I got to ask you, you know,
how was it working with Paul Newman?

Well, that's the same thing.

We're not real but glisk he was seventeen years old.
They really couldn't shoot the puck very well, couldn't skate
very well.

They didn't have much talent. They'd just say through it.
Newman he was You ever noticed that Newman never won the.

Academy Award till Actors slap Shot. You know, it was
one of these things that no one really liked the guys,
so we brought him over at our house. A handsome mother.

They brought him over at our house. You know, we
had a great supper.

We made a great salad with their whole mother's solid dressing.
We made our spaghetti with mom style or spaghetti sauce.
And what's the guy doing?

He stole all of our recipes. We let him slide
because he gave all his money as a hol in
the og gang or cherry on that stuff.

But you know what, Paul of them was a great man,
great athlete, great humanitarian and a great great actor, just
unbelievable human being and godness, Ushul, he's looking down as
in heaven right now. But it is an honor because
during the film, in the slopshot, he would come to
us as a hockey as an actress at Steve or
Jeff or whoever, what would a coach do? What w

were a player do in this situation? And we would
do the same thing, mister Paul Newman, Paul, what were
we do? You know he would come to us and
give us an advice on how to act because we
weren't accause I was nineteen years old twenty years old.
I had no clue. I didn't have to work that summer,
but yeah, my first three paychecks with the Minnesota Funny
Saints and the minor leagues bounced. You know.

We kept on playing because we loved the game that much.
