Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good morning, ruminators, and welcome to the second hour. Already Yeah,
on the Morning Show with Preston Scott. He's Jose. I'm Preston.
It's Friday, April tenth, show fifty five eighty and it's
good to be with you. As always, we thank you
for sharing time with us, and I'm pleased to share
time with our next guest. He has been on the

(00:25):
show a few times over the years. First heard him
when he was Speaker of the House for the Florida Legislature.
Now he's running for Governor Paul Renner.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Good morning, sir, how are you, Preston, Good morning?

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Tell me tell me about kind of how's the campaign going.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
It's going very very well. You know, there's been now
three and only three straw polls released in three different
grassroots groups. We've won all three of them, overwhelmingly by
more than two to one over Byron Donald's and so
we are convinced that when people get a fair comparison,
we're going to win this race.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
You know, it doesn't matter who I have on the show,
if they're Florida based, Florida centric, whether it's doctor Bob
McClure with the James Madison Institute who I know you
know well, even those that are kind of analysts of
the session and what hasn't hasn't gotten done. The one
word that is common to all of those people is
the word affordability. And I know that you're focused on

(01:24):
it as well.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Absolutely, And you know, when it comes to property taxes,
a government should never grow faster than our incomes. But
that's exactly what's happened by a significant amount. And so
we'll be rolling out a substantial property tax proposal here
in the coming days. We're going around the state listening
to people to decide and help tweak that and what

(01:48):
they would want to see in that proposal, because at
the end of the day, we've all got to wind
up better off if we're going to undertake that than
we did when we started. People have to be happier
and most importantly, be able to afford the cost of
having a home. It's the most important thing to me
from an American dream standpoint, that first time home buyers
can afford to get a home, that people on fixed

(02:08):
income can afford to keep their home. Neither of those
things are happening throughout Florida today, and that's going to
change when I'm governor.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
You know, I applauded Governor to Santas for the bold idea,
But quite candidly, I've been proposing that for the twenty
five years I've been doing this radio program that people
should own their own home when they pay it off.
When they pay it off, they should own it. They
should own the property that it sits on. So what
are the key tenants? I know you're going to go
around the state and listen, but what are the key

(02:37):
things that you think have to be included in a
property tax proposal?

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Well, I think first to point to home ownership is
that homestead owners those that have a principal residence is
the place you live, will and most all cases, pay
no property taxes, which means every everyday person like you
and me will pay no property taxes, not just when
they pay off their home, but before then. And we'd

(03:04):
like to have that relief to be as immediate as possible.
But I also think we don't want to pick winners
and losers. We don't want, certainly don't want the local
governments to turn around and just say, okay, we'll just
tax mom and pop businesses, will tax people who rent
their homes are rent their apartment, for example, to make
up the difference, and I want to protect those folks
as well. So there's going to be broad relief for

(03:26):
everyone in the state of Florida. We do that to
begin with through savings, because that's what good conservatives should do.
Before you raise a dollar of any kind of replacement tax,
you should try to squeeze out every dollar that is wasted,
every dollar that is engaged in fraud or being spent
through fraudulent means. Look for efficiencies and how we do procurement,

(03:48):
look for other efficiencies through technology to squeeze down government
even leaner than it is today. I guarantee you we
can do that even as lean as we are in
the state. I think cheapest is not the next cheapest
behind New Hampshire. We can squeeze some dollars out of
the state government. I'm confident of that, and do that
across every place where taxpayer money touches, whether that's universities

(04:11):
or anything, anything that has taxpayer money. We need to
squeeze that down. So I've talked about, you know, permanent
dose rather than rather than just I know the CFO
has done a good job and keep him on board,
going one hundred miles an hour in every corner of
the state, saving us some money. That's the first place
to start.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Go to his website Vote Renner r E n n
e er dot com learn more about the campaign for
governor for Paul Renner served in the United States Navy. Again,
as always, thank you for your service, Paul to our country.
What would you say is the big issue behind property
tax reform that needs to be addressed here in Florida.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Well, I think it's just that people can't enjoy Florida
and afford to live here anymore. People that are working
to have to live an hour hour and a half
away to go to their job, and they're not making
a lot of money to start with. And so we've
been a victim of our success. Let me say that upfront.
I was part of that as an architect of the
Free State of Florida with Governor de Santas in building

(05:15):
what is a magnet for people from out of state.
But let's shift a little bit of the burden to
those people that are coming in from out of state
tourists of the other people, and make sure that people
that make their living here, that work here, that have
their home here get the benefit of this reform. And
that is where I'm aiming. That is the core principle
that I'm aiming to hit to make it a little

(05:37):
bit more affordable to live here in the great state
of Florida.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
What's the line, what's the line between what the private
sector needs to do through capitalism and what the government
needs to do through good policy.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Well, the private sector creates all wealth. Government creates nothing
when it comes to wealth. But government should tighten its belt,
and again it should not have a windfall when we're
all struggling to pay our bills and so on the
property tax front, that's a clear lever to pull where
we can tighten up the belt both at the state
level too and the local level to free up some
dollars to make this tax reform work. And then in

(06:13):
other areas. You know, to your point is the private sector,
by providing better, higher wage jobs, can help us out
of the supportability situation. And so we've got to be
investing in our K twelve. Our university is making sure
they're nimble, they're effective, they're excellent, so that kids who
graduate from a school here have something meaningful and can
get a great job, Paul.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
I'll let you go here to whatever extent you want to.
I have spoken pretty loudly and clearly about the fact
that Islam as a religion, as a faith, is incompatible
with our constitution. Anyone who is a practicing Islamist and
believes in the writings of the Qur'an, which I studied
for many years, knows and understands that you cannot be

(06:57):
a practicing Islamist and be supportive of the United States Constitution.
I don't think they should be allowed to run for
office if you're in Islamist. I don't believe they should
be allowed to run for any elected office anywhere in
the country, let alone in the state of Florida. How
do we protect Florida from what we're seeing happen in
New York and Michigan and in other parts of the country.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Well, the words you use are exactly the words I
use just a few weeks ago, and there's not any
people running for office that I'm aware of that have
been that clear cut. People talk about Shria law, I'm
not sure they even understand what that means. But I
agree with you, and it's not a statement of animosity,
And I know it's not for you. It's a statement
of fact. Is that as a system, it is incompatible
with the American constitutional order and the American way of life.

(07:43):
And the example I use is if one out of
a thousand Muslims that come into this country are Islamist
and follow those tenants and cause the death of innocent American,
isn't that one too many? Are you willing to allow
another thousand, another ten thousand, other one hundred thousand, a
million into this country? We have five hundred thousand and
a half a million Muslims in the state of Florida.

(08:05):
Today they're calling Dearborn Tampa the new Dearborn, which of
course is a majority Muslim community in Michigan. And we
know that they create enclaves. There are no go zones
in Europe. We don't have to speculate. We can look
at the nations of Europe and what's happening there where
women can be attacked and their attacker is never investigated
in these no go zones in an area they grew

(08:27):
up in. And so fundamentally I agree with you. I've
been saying it loudly. People have opened up to this threat,
and so as Governor I will restrict and prevent any
of these go zones. We'll do everything we can legally,
will challenge existing precedents. I love the bill that the
governor just signed. We need to cut off HB one.
You know I was a champion for school choice funding.

(08:48):
We're not going to give that to people that are
teaching these radical concepts. We're going to shut down any
slaughterhouses that don't meet our standards. We're going to make
sure there are not enclaves in our state. We're going
to make sure that CARE and Muslim Brotherhood are not
only designated terrorist organizations, but we're going to put the
full force of government behind preventing them from setting up shop.

(09:09):
And because we know they have terrorist ties and having
those activities here in our state, I will do everything
possible to protect our citizens. And again, I'm not willing
to let another thousand in the state if that means
that one of them, just one, and I think it's
more than that, but if just one would harm a
single innocent Floridian.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
Paul, thanks very much for the time this morning. Look
forward to having you back in the future. Thank you, sir,
Paul Renner, and again the website vote renner dot com.
