Speaker 1 (00:00):
You might look out after a windstorm and see some
shingles laying on the ground. You might feel the hail
hitting your house. You look outside and you see your
sighting just like hanging off by like a thread. Well,
a guy who knows how to handle these things, among
many others, is my friend Josh Connery's with Artisan Roofing
and General Contracting. Josh, so great to have you back

(00:20):
here with us today.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
And thank you for having me back again.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
All right, so how's it been going so far this season?
We're early June, got through the April showers, the mayflowers.
What's going down?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
You know, it's so far we've been fortunate. It's like
slowing down, you know where it's not as I mean,
we're we're seeing like storms on the horizon. It's not.
Everyone's just watching the radar. You know, everyone's becoming that
weather channel like subject matter expert, and you know where
we are seeing like what's coming, just to be on
the safe side. But it's getting quiet. So so far,

(00:52):
the Omadome is still working. Man, so it seems that
the oh Madome is still working. But you know, you know,
Fremont got nailed, and there's some other spotty areas. Yeah,
and obviously it's a race to try to service those people.
But I mean it still early. I mean College World
Series is coming up. It's always that time of the
year where you know, storms and College World Series go

(01:14):
hand to hands.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
There at least one real nice, big storm, right exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Sometimes it's on open night, and I hope that's not
the case because me and my family are going to
go down there for opening night. And you know, as
much as I love a good storm, I'd rather really
enjoy Opening Night with their family. So but yeah, no,
we're it's store early sto early. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Well, and you guys are a year long. You know,
heavy snow sometimes on a roof can really do some damage.
And I know that that's kind of the backbone of
what your business is is the roofing aspect, but you
do so many other things. Did get an email asking
about kind of the service area. So I always talk
about you guys being Omaha. You're an Omaha business, your
base here, you live here, you want to help people
in Omaha, but you do serve the outside areas as well.

(01:52):
So this guy said that, you know, could you help
me in Fremont?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Oh? Absolutely? I mean, you know, going in Fremont's not
a problem. I mean it's it's a hop, skip and
a jump away for us really, but no, we can
we most early travel. Actually we'll travel where the work is,
you know, will help out who we can. You know,
essentially our ratis is about a good three hours. Oh nice.
If they're like let's say commercial projects, large commercial projects

(02:15):
like I have someone in my networking group where like, hey,
I have a client in Pennsylvania, would you be willing
to travel here's the scope of work. The answer is yes,
because you're looking for somebody dependable to be able to
meet those needs. So absolutely, you know this the best
way to find out is to ask, you know, if
we if we're able to go that far.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
We're speaking with Josh Connor Artisan Roofing here in Omaha.
The general contracting part is something that you know, I've
been leaning on during storm season. A lot of exterior,
a lot of roofing, but general contracting is also something
that you can do. So it's been pretty quiet on
that front for storms. Talk to me a little bit
about your you know, the general contracting, how that works

(02:55):
and the kind of projects that you guys can also
help out with for anybody in this area.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
So for general contracting, as I mentioned, Class B a license,
we do all of it. So if you have like
a bathroom innovation, a kitchen remodel, something you want to
design and do, whether it be an extension or a garage,
or if you have a pool, if you have a
pool and you need of a pool house, we can
service those needs more you know, more than welcome to
service those needs. But if you have a home, it's

(03:20):
like has in a basement that just you know what, I
want to maximize my space, or one day I want
to put this house in the market and get full
value for it. You know, we'll be more than happy
to help you with those things because for every one
of those investments has an ROI, you know, and so
we'll be able to determine. And also one of the
things we work with though too is handing hands with
your realtors, especially if you put it on the market.

(03:41):
We'll work with the realtor and say, like, get the
surrounding comps, find out what your true investment is going
to be, what's the scope of work you're looking for,
what's more two, what's your budget? You know, So therefore
you're not going into a job upside down. Just as
much as we don't want to have a project go
upside down, you don't want your project to go upside
down because if you're a hope and belief is to man, man,

(04:02):
I put courts. You know, my kitchering model, these high
end appliance, says man, this house is so nice. But
it's in the wrong neighborhood to have those kind of things, right,
because you're not going to get your ROI.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
So we're thinking about this like that's kind of three
D four D chess, right, Like, man, it'd be so
cool to have this here, but it's not necessarily going
to sell if it's in the wrong areas. So for
people who have just general questions about this, and this
is one thing for me. You know, we can have
these grand ideas of things that we'd like to do,

(04:35):
but you know, sometimes you'll call a company and there's like, yeah,
I want to work, Like we'll come and we'll try
to figure this out. But that isn't really doing a
service to the people that are looking for a project
to be done. What is kind of that inspection or
kind of the estimate, what's that process like at the
very beginning, because you're not turning the people away, but
you want to consult with them about honestly, like what

(04:56):
the best ideas would be for the best ROI the neighborhood,
or the thing that could you know actually you know,
be the right fit for their family. What does that
process look like for you guys at the beginning.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
So in the beginning, when a customer, let's say, calls
in like, hey, I want to remodel my kitchen or
I want to actually finish my basement. It's those are
my favorite ones, finishing basements. Is we we come out
and we start just asking questions, what's your design? What
are you looking for? What have you seen on pinterest?
You know, like show us overall, like what what constant
are you looking for? So therefore we can see what

(05:30):
mock up design we need to create to make it
a visual for you as well. And then therefore we
started diving into hey, if you're wanting to go this route,
and you're now if this is going to be your
forever home, do it, do whatever you want, do whatever
you want right and it's going to look great. I
can't wait to put it on our portfolio. But if
it's something where let's say it's a property flip, it's

(05:50):
an investment, it's a commercial building, you know whatever. Hey,
let's let's slow down, let's do some calculations, let's see
what you're looking for. Let's find out what your realtor
is also looking for. But overall, the it's the design
bid build concept that we do. Let's go to design,
we'll go to bidding, let's go to build. But the
biggest thing though, too, is you never want to go

(06:11):
with the cheapest, right because there's something you're probably not
telling you. And if you always go with the cheapest
with those type of like home renovations as general contractors,
you don't want to be surprised with change orders either,
because you have it in your head. You have a
budget like, man, I'm gonna have my dream kitchen for
let's say I'm just gonna make up number twenty five thousand,
and they didn't tell you about the plumbing, the electrical

(06:32):
like oh, by the way, oh this and oh that,
and all of a sudden, your your max like your budget,
your kids no longer going to college, you know, but
you have a beautiful kitchen supposed at least so. But yeah,
it's we we do it from design, bid build is
what we do.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
We're speaking with Josh Connor from Artisan Roofing in general
contracting here in the Omaha area. H Josh, Let's go
to another aspect that goes with you know you talk
about talking to a realtor about talking to insurance because
I know a lot of people this is a thing
from even last year. The people might be sitting on
not sure what they want to do. How exactly that

(07:08):
you know they should approach this. You're also a really
good resource. You guys are a really good resource for
people who have questions about their insurance claims and how
that works. So how would that be a conversation they
could get started with you?

Speaker 2 (07:19):
So within as far as like insurance claims go, yeah, well,
especially if you have like old claims, like if you
still haven't done anything. If you still haven't done anything,
I apologize from last year prior to like reach out
to us right away because believe it or not, some
insurance companies and also depending on policy, we could ask
for extensions, especially if you haven't filed it. So if

(07:40):
you had filed it or we haven't filed it, there
are ways to navigate. It's a little bit, you know,
form of resistance, but we try so hard to find
a way for you because at the end of the day,
it is your policy, it is your investment, it is
a protection of your home. So we will do what
it takes and also dig it to our own resources
to maximize the claim for you for your benefits. So

(08:01):
therefore you know that you're getting what you paid for,
you know. But at the same time, we're realistic, you know,
we don't try to shoot for the moon. We're replacing
what was there prior to you know, we're in it
for integrity.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yeah, and this is one thing that you know, you
guys are really loud about is the fact that we
are not storm chasing companies big storm hits. With the
new technology these days, I'm getting bombarded with random text
messages or calls. Yeah, from companies I've never heard of
that are like, hey, we are doing estimates on roofing

(08:33):
in your neighborhood. Would you like us to come out? Now,
I have my guys, so I don't have to worry
about it. But like I could only imagine for people
that are like, yeah, I think I actually do have
a problem to take one of those phone calls and
then they get stuck in a contract or get stuck
having to deal with a storm chasing type company. You
guys are not like that because you're based here and

(08:54):
you're trying to give the best quality of work regardless
of you know, what the needs are, whether it's something
very small, something that's a full replacement. How can people
detect something that I mean, first of all, it should
just call you, but right, yeah, how can people detect
that they may be taken for a ride on some
of this stuff?

Speaker 2 (09:10):
So it's crazy though too. Like we tried the actual
text message campaign, I'll be transparent. We tried it, right,
but like we're established, we're local, you know, and then obviously,
like I mentioned, we can travel, So like, okay, let's
run with this text message campaign. It didn't vote so well,
and the reason being because people are caustantly getting spam
like hey you can lose lose your belly fat hit yes,
and how you know, so with ruping like hey let's

(09:31):
get you on the inspection. So it didn't bode well
for us. So we stopped the campaign because it felt
like it was being pushy and you know, like I'm
even I'm getting text means like, hey, we're in your area,
we'd love to inspect the roof. Hey, just what happens
We're hiring, so like we want a job. So we
we pulled away from that because it seemed it felt
like it was being pushy, and so we just went

(09:52):
back to brass tax Let's go canvasy area, friends, family, Facebook,
Let's see who is in need and establish ourselves that way.
So I mean the AI text measure, I mean had
a customer because we partner with the company that finds
customers in need, that actually did get impacted and it's
not AI. We actually had a customer to say like, sorry,
I didn't do it because I thought it was AI.

(10:13):
Like that part's crazy, right, People truly feel like they
weren't talking to a human being, and I can assure
you they were so right.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Well with your company, it's like that. But also even
beyond that, you have this kind of network of being
able to make sure everybody is taken care of, nobody
gets lost in the shuffle just because they're looking for
something small. Explain how that's different than maybe some other
companies and how they operate.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
So for sure, like the the like as much as
I've always say we value repairs as much as we
value replacements, because we know what that's gonna build. It's
gonna build trust, it's gonna build and it's going to
create our footprint in the community as well to know that, hey,
you know, this might just be a pipe jack and
you know, here's this dollar model. It's going to cost
to do it. But we also do the full replacements.

(10:59):
And there are some that's like now they'll they feel
like they have other more important things to do now
you know, reperfect. No we're not. You know, do we
get have I gotten phone calls and be like, hey,
so ons to never reach back out to me, my
tremendous apologies. How can I be of service? You know?
Is there a way I can recoup this? And sometimes
though two like now we already move with somebody else. Well,

(11:21):
you know what, thank you so much for the feedback.
I apologize that you had this experience. This is not
who we are and so you know, at least trying
to let her know like, yeah, we're human. But at
the same time, though, too, it's that hurts mostly too,
like when those fall through the cracks and it's not
it's not intentional, but it just me. It shows me
that we need to beef up our process. We need
to beef up our automation, our quality control needs to

(11:44):
be more efficient, you know, to be able to service
you know, the city that I pretty much grew up in.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
So and that's one thing that you guys have absolutely
done and things do not fall in the cracks with
Artisan Roofing. You can find the website Artisan roofingi Inc
dot com learn about their general contracting is well all
sorts of different stuff that you can do with these guys.
Josh as always a pleasure to talk with you. Thanks
for what you do for this community. I'm sure we'll
be chatting again soon.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
Absolutely, thank you so much
