We join you this week from Houston, Texas Dyke and Park,
where the Guardians are taking on the Astros this weekend
in a three game series. Good show lined up for
you today. In just a little bit, we will hear
from Daniel Espino, who had an emotional Major league debut
(01:13):
on Wednesday in Milwaukee. We'll also visit with Parker Messk,
Reheese Hoskins, and Gabrie Larius. And we'll hear from video
replay review coordinator Gunner Will Helmi get the inner workings
of a system that has worked very well for the
Guardians the past couple of seasons. But first our weekend review,
and it's been a touch and go week for the
(01:36):
Guardians that began with bad injury news from last Saturday,
a game where three of their top hitters had to
leave the game, including Jose Ramirez, on Hell Martinez and
Chase de Lauder. All three eventually ended up on the
injured list. With different injuries, and that created some gaps
(01:57):
in the starting lineups each night and also the bench.
Monday was an off day, but Tuesday in Milwaukee a
two to one loss to the Brewers. Followed up on Wednesday,
the Guardians trying to get back on the winning track,
but a tough one for Cleveland. A couple of big
moments though in this one. Despite the loss the Brewers,
they jumped in front with three runs in the first inning,
(02:17):
two more in the second made it five to nothing
in a hurry, but the Guardians came back in the
fourth inning. Travis Pizana and Brian Rochio walked and then
kal man Zardo singled that loaded the bases for Daniel Schneeman.
A young right hander winds it up. Here's his two
to two swung on and there's a high fly ball,
deep bright field, grand slam steamen his second slam of
(02:44):
the year, and just like that, we have a ballgame again.
Brewers five, Guardians four as Daniel Schneeman goes deep home
run number six on the seat season, and there's a
spark for the Guardians as nothing going on through the
(03:06):
first three innings, but now four on the board. Already
three career Grand Slams for Schneman as he looks to
help the offense after the injuries to Ramirez, Martinez and
de Laughter. I got the Guardians right back in it,
but Milwaukee answered in the bottom of the fourth with
two more runs to make it seven to four, and
(03:26):
then two more in the eighth to put it out
of reach, and nine to four was the final. However,
the big story in Wednesday Night's game was on the
mound in the sixth inning as Daniel Espino made as
much anticipated major league debut. Let's listen in to Hammies
call of that sixth inning. Well, the long awaited major
(03:47):
league debut of Daniel Espino. I'm not as good a
feel good story as this organization will ever have. Seven
to four Milwaukee in the sixth, bottom third of the order.
His mom and other family members have been in Cleveland.
(04:09):
They have traveled here to Milwaukee, and Garrett Mitchell, the
first major league battery, faces and he misses inside ball one.
Daniel Espino a guy, then get get it up there
close to a one hundred miles per hour, good slider
and occasional curve. Change up the pitch to Mitchell and
(04:29):
a wave job as he threw that one right by
him at ninety nine miles per hour. The only sadness
you feel tonight is late father not here to see
his son. That pitch strength to his Dad tragically passed
(04:51):
away before Daniel could even get home to see him
in Panama from prostate cancer. Now now the one two pitch,
and it's inside two and two. Daniel a big, strong man,
built like an NFL linebacker. Although he has slimmed down
(05:13):
a little bit, he is still six two two twenty five.
The pitch to Mitchell and he's swing and miss struck
him out. How about that.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
On ninety nine mile an hour fastball and he blew
away Garrett Mitchell the first major league hitter he faces.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
One down. Here's Cooper Pratt got his first major league
hit tonight. Well, Daniel Lespino is going to help this
ball club A one time starter for now a bullpen.
The pitch and it's in there called strike on a slider.
His slider ninety two miles per hour, his fastball touch

one hundred the right hander from the set here it
comes fastball and the heat a little high, one hundred
miles per hour. Why is he not starting anymore well
because of all of the shoulder operations, at least for
this year. Keep him healthy, keep him in the bullpen.
(06:23):
Now the one one outside, two in one. The thing
about a Spino, he is still just twenty five years
of age. The right hander handset just below the chest.
He lets it a rip and a swing and a miss,
up and in with one hundred miles per hour one
(06:44):
and two. The count Daniel Espino from Panama, moved to
Georgia when he was a sophomore to play high school
baseball there and Cleveland even but he made him a
first round pick in twenty nineteen. Now the two to
(07:05):
two swing and a miss over matched another Brewers hitter
at one hundred miles per hour. Cooper Prant joins Garrett
Mitchell swinging and missing at the heat, and now David
Hamilton sack bunt and an infield hit. Two outs Numbedy
(07:31):
on seven to four Milwaukee here in the sixth. But
this is the story of the night for Cleveland. There's
his first curveball and a knee buckler for strike one.
He's got a starter's repertoire, but normally out of the
bullpen he'll be fastball slider, he'll be a one inning guy.
(07:51):
The oh one pitch swung on and somebody put it
in play, a pop to shallow left and Stephen Kwan
off Brian Rochio and the major league debut. Some wondered
if it would ever become a reality, including Daniel Espino,
with all the surgeries, all the trials, tribulation and rehab
(08:15):
he went through. That'll be quite a greeting in that
third base dugout, three up, three down, two strikeouts. What
to day it was for Daniel Espino, along with many
of his family members in attendance. And we'll talk to
him all about it coming up in our next segment.
Now on the Thursday's game, Guardians trying to salvage the
(08:37):
finale of the series in Milwaukee. But once again it
was the Brewers taking an early lead with a run
in the second, and it could have been more than
just one if not for a great defensive play from
another Guardian making his major league debut. That was outfielder
Khalil Watson.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Now, the three to one pitch swung on wine the right,
that's going to get cut on a dive by Watson
going toward the line.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Oh, what a play.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
By Khalil Watson that was ticketed down the right field
line for a bas is clearing double and on the
run he leaped outstretched toward the line and right and
rob zorties.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
In the third, the Guardians even things up with one
big swing from David Fry. The payoff swung on hit
high and deep to left center. Cheerio's back near the wall,
he leaps in.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
It is gone.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
David Fry with a solo homer to left center, and
we've got a one to one game. Tremendous shet bad
for David Fry on the ninth pitch, a towering solo
home run the left center. The Brewers went back on
top two to one with a run in the fourth,
but in the sixth, another big hit for the Guardians,

this time Kyle Manzardo. Now the one to one swung on.
This is line deep right field, back his powers. It
has gone and we are tied at two. Kyle man
Zardo a line drive home run to right number eight
for Kyle Manzardo and Cleveland's come back for the second

time today to tie it. It's a two to two
ball game here in the sixth, more good defense from
the Guardians, in the bottom of the sixth, as Brian
Rochio continues to pile up the highlights at shortstop, the
pits swung on.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Smashed the short back at Pickrochio fires to first and
get Sanchez after spinning around in shallow left. Oh boebe
that he played on the short hop with a batcan
and then spinning around in shallow left to throw out
Gary Sanchez, who gets robbed of a base in.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Then in the seventh, heading to the home run barrage
and snapping the tie was Travis Pizana the one.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Oh and he drives one to deep bright field hallway
back and go on into the second deck a line
drive missile and Travis Posana, with his fifth major league
home run, has put Cleveland on top three to two
(11:24):
here in enning number seven. Oh did he drill that
ball into the second deck in right? Guardian's added one
more in that seventh inning with a run, scoring on
a wild pitch to make it a four to two lead.
Then out of the bullpen, Tim Herron, Colin Holderman, and
Hunter Gaddis kept the Brewers off the scoreboard before turning
(11:44):
it over to Kate Smith. In the ninth.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Brewers all over the joint four to two Cleveland two.
Down in the eighth here's the one too, offering swinging
and a miss ninety seven miles an hour wipes out
yellis what a job by Kate Smith? Four to two,
Cleveland eight in the books. So the Guardians picked up

a win in Milwaukee. They could not, though, parlay that
into another one in Houston on Friday night, as the

Welcome back to Guardians Weekly Jim rosen House back with
you from Houston's dyke In Park, and as we heard
in our weekend review segment, Wednesday night, the major league
debut for Daniel Espino following a long comeback from injury.
He pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts, and
we caught up with him the following day and asked
(13:36):
him if he's come down up of Cloud nine yet
after the memorable night in Milwaukee.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
I think I'm still in the cloud. But you know,
it's fun to see how, you know, everybody has shipping
into my life, into my career, and to go out
there and kind of like just kind of like the
finished brother sort of, it's kind of cool and speaks
(14:03):
a lot of speaks a lot about this organizations and
the people that have around me.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
You came up on Friday and then you don't pitch
till the following Wednesday, which I think for a lot
of players that can be tricky and not the easiest
thing to deal with. But you were saying earlier that
that might have been to your advantage last night and
helping you pitch the way you can.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Yeah, obviously, like you want to go out there as
soon as possible, and you want to trying to get
it out of the way. But I think that helped
me kind of like settle in a little bit. See
how the routines are, see how everything is, and at
the end, it's just it's just a game and going
out there enjoying it. Trusting my teammates, trusting my catchers
(14:45):
definitely was fun.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
And were you surprised at all at the command that
you had, that you weren't spraying the ball all over
and then that you were able to keep your delivery
where it needed to be to be able to throw
enough strikes to be effective.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Yeah, I think for the last couple of months, I
felt pretty good about how I'm commanding the strike zone,
I'm getting ahead, how I'm you know, using my my
tree pitches at fastball, the curve on the slider, just
confident on that. And like literally leading up to to
to yesterday, I felt that I was in a really
(15:20):
good spot. Just gotta continue to work and today's another
day and get ready to compete and go go out
there and attack the songe I, attack the hitter, and
you know, just just enjoy the game.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
You know, three up, three down, inning with a couple
of strikeouts and you get back to the dugout and
the reaction you receive from your teammates. What does that
mean to you teammates and coaches and everyone else involved.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
It means a lot. And I always talked about how
this group of guys, how how great they are, and
how good of a person they are, and to see them,
how they they they welcomed me this week is I
(16:06):
couldn't ask for more, even the coaching staff, and I
was talking about earlier about how everybody kind of like
has chipped in a little bit into my career, into
my life, and just that it just shows that, just
that it shows how many people that you can see
and also like the ones that you cannot see, the
(16:26):
people in Panama, you know, the guys that I work
out with, the guys in Goodyear, the doctor that performed
the surgery. I truly believe in that I couldn't be
here first without you know, God, and he created me
(16:47):
to have this destined. But also like He has blessed me,
were the surrounding of people that that want the best
for me, and that really showed and He will come
through the show.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
And in the stands last night, your mom and so
much family. Uh, what was it like to see them
after the game, after everything that had happened.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
It was surreal we were missing one guy up there
and that was kind of like the things postgame and
how we were so grateful about how you know, he
he pretty much gave everything for me to accomplish my dream,
(17:36):
and yesterday I did that. And I know that he's
proud of me, and like he's he's looking down to
me and he's he's smiling and telling everybody that his
son made.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
It to the big leagues.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
And many more appearances to come, I'm sure, Daniel, thanks
so much for coming by and sharing your story from
last night.

What a young man Daniel Lispino is and perseverance certainly

check in now with Parker Messik, who had another win
on Thursday in Milwaukee as he continues to pitch well
in what is still his rookie season, and he is
a serious Rookie of the Year candidate the way he's
been pitching. And again, it's his rookie year. Even though
he was called up and pitched well down this stretch,
he didn't compile enough innings to lose that rookie status.
(19:21):
And when we sat down with him in Houston on Friday,
we asked him that he still feels like a rookie
after the success of a season ago.
Speaker 6 (19:29):
Yeah, I still feel like one. You know, it's always
fun being the young guyland teams.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
There's a lot of.
Speaker 6 (19:34):
Fun stuff that you have to do, and then you know,
once I get out on the field, then it's just baseball.
But there's some stuff off the field where you're still
getting to feel like a rookie.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
And yesterday another excellent performance in a season filled with those.
But one of the things that stood out yesterday your
velocity was up significantly, and what do you attribute that to?
How did you get there?
Speaker 6 (19:56):
Yeah, we made some good adjustments within the delivery, just
get myself in the right spot moving down the mound,
and uh, you know, as a day, I felt good.
There's there's some a little bit more resks going into
that week, so you know, I felt really good, body
felt great, and you know, the delivery was where it
needed to be. So hopefully we can kind of continue
that trend. And now that I know what it's like
when it's at its best, you know, I can kind
(20:17):
of always revert back to that game and and find
that delivery to be able to get the VLO when
I need.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
It in season. How difficult is it to make those
kind of adjustments.
Speaker 6 (20:27):
Yeah, it's it's it's hard sometimes sometimes you have to
be willing to you know, the most important thing is
always getting the result. When you're in the game, you
want to help the team win and in any way
you can, and in the long run, sometimes that's sacrificing
some of you know, your your comfortable feelings to be
able to get to the best version of yourself. And
you know there's times ro out the year where where
(20:47):
pitchers have to do that and you know, I've been
kind of last three or four starts, been kind of
adjusting delivery to find you know, the right spot, right
spots in the delivery to be able to throw hard.
And I think, you know, I've just had to kind
of deal with what what comes with that, and seeing
the result during the Milwaukee game makes it all worth it,
because you know, not only is a good game, you
know with the heater velocity, but you know, the execution
(21:09):
of all the pitches really shows up when the delivery
is in the right spot. So hopefully we can keep
it there moving forward and those sacrifices will be worth it.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Harker, You you get back out there after a loss
in the first two games of this series, and everyone
I think likes to be a stopper if they can
in any way. Do you carry that to the mound
with you knowing that that the team would love to
get a win and get out of there with at
least one.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
Yeah, no doubt. There's there's a little bit of a
competitive edge, you know when when you know just haven't
won a game in a couple of days, you know
you really want to get one for everyone in the clubhouse,
and you know, when I come in between innings, you know,
try and fire everyone up, you know, make sure I'm
communicating and you know, if ro Gil and Khalil made
two really nice plays, I made sure I found them
in the dugout after that happened, because that's just huge
(21:51):
when you know, when you lose a couple of games
in your defense and making plays like that normally turns
into good offense. Everybody's fired up, locked in. I have played,
so it's definitely one of those things you care into
the start, but you try and make it a good
thing to where it's like feeling you for the start.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
And the team going through a stretch with injuries really
for the first time to keep players. But it seems
like the past several seasons resiliency has been a big
key for this club. And what are you singing in
there after the loss of Jose Ramirez and Chase the
Lotter and on El Martinez.
Speaker 6 (22:19):
Yeah, that's something that that even as a young new
guy on the team, you know, that's something that I
knew right off the bat of this team. No matter
no matter who's on the field, the same thing is
going to be expected, you know, from Jose as it
was for me on my debut. It's just that same
consistency and that that will to be on the field
and want.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
To win the game.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
And I think that you know has carried down and
all the guys that keep coming up with it's not
fun when you lose Jose and Marty and the lotter,
it's you know, you those are big spots to feel.
So when you have guys that just come up and
want to win just as bad as they do, then
and then it just makes it easier and you can
fight for those guys, but definitely can't wait to get
our guys back.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
So you pitch a series finale in Milwaukee, you won't
pitch here in Houston this weekend. What are those series
like when you go to a ballparking and you know
you're not going to participate, coach, because your turn's not
going to come up.
Speaker 6 (23:07):
Yeah, that's that's where the they making jokes. Sounds like
it's just just a mini vacation, but you know that's
really where those adjustments that we talk about come in.
With those series that you don't get to play, you
get to spend some time with the coaches out here
before the game starts and work on what didn't go
so well in the start before or try and you know,
repeat what did go really well. So it's one of
those series where I'm just going to try and learn
(23:28):
from the start of Milwaukee and see what I did
good in bad and try and build off that well.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Enjoy the weekend in Houston, Parker, thanks for coming back, Yes, sir,
thank you for having me. Really good picture right there,
Parker Messik, who is having a fine rookie season. Reyes
Hoskins is our next guest, and he was forced into
outfield duty last weekend after the Guardians lost three players
to injury in that Saturday game against the Tigers. It's
been a while since he's been out in the outfield,
(23:54):
and when we got to Milwaukee earlier in the week,
we asked him, have you packed the outfield love for
the trip?
Speaker 5 (24:00):
I do? Now, I do now. Yeah, obviously we had
a we had a couple of guys go down, but
at that point, obviously we are winning the game too.
You just kind of figure out how to get to
the end of the game while still having more runs
than the other team, and found some guys out of position,
but the pitchers kind of picked us up at the end,
and yeah, hopefully we don't see too many more Reese
(24:22):
Hoskins left field innings and over the.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Course of a long season. Though, when something like that
happens and those types of games happen, is it kind
of fun to kind of take you back to a
time that maybe you forget.
Speaker 5 (24:33):
Keeps you on your feet for sure, and you know,
with one hundred and sixty two of these things, like
those types of moments are pretty valuable when kind of surprised,
but you're still competing within the game, So we'll take
that for what that is. But again, like hopefully we
hopefully we don't we don't run into that issue again.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
And offensively personally, how do you feel things are coming
along for you where you'd like to get to?
Speaker 5 (24:58):
Well, I've been up and down a little bit. I
kind of have found some footing at least here towards
the end of May and into June. Hopefully I'll you know,
get a little bit more consistent at bats here. I
should at least with some guys down and hopefully that
will lead to some more consistent results. If I can
continue to get on base and provide you know, some
slug when I can, I think I'll be a value
(25:21):
to this lineup.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
You mentioned some guys down, and obviously the big one
is Jose Ramirez will be out for a while and
Art and soul guy of this team. As a veteran player,
you've been around teams where that's happened before. What are
some of the keys and from your perspective, how big
a loss is it?
Speaker 5 (25:37):
Well, I mean, anytime you lose a you know, a
future Hall of Famer or you're gonna get worse that day.
But I think the biggest key for our group is
not trying to step up so to say, right like,
it's just it's it's on us to be as good
as we we can and not try to be more
than we are.
Speaker 7 (25:55):
Right.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
Nobody on this team, really, almost nobody in this league
can be Host Aramirez. But if we all focus on
what we can do to be our best versions of us,
and then I think we're gonna have a pretty good
chance to win every night, all right.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
And not to put names out there, but you came
in with the visiting team. It's noted throughout baseball the
visiting team hotel can be certain rooms haunted. Sure do
you believe that? And then have you ever run into
anything that would have you believed that.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
I think I do believe that. I don't have any
personal experiences with that, but you know, there's so much
life that has gone on before us and we'll go
on after us, that it's kind of hard not to
believe some of that stuff. So so you got to go. Okay,
nights sleep last night. So far, we got a couple
more nights. I'm not gonna hold my breath, but yeah,
(26:45):
so far, so good, Reech, thank you appreciate it. Yeah,
thanks to go guards. Always fun to visit with Reee Hoskins.
You never know where the conversation's gonna go, but that
was fun talking to him about on and off the
field happenings In Milwaukee. Gabriel Aarius is back with the
ball club after a lengthy stay on the injured list
with a hamstring injury, and along with translator Oggi Rivero,
(27:08):
he talked about how the rehab process went and how
he feels getting back in the game action b B.
Speaker 8 (27:18):
Always, it was a good process for us, the rehab.
I think we did all the correct things of the
training stuff suggested for a proper rehab, and I was
really happy they wear how things are unfolded and also
they wear how we started getting ready in triple A.
I feel like the games were really like similar to
to gam unlike activities, and I feel like it didn't
keep a bit. I feel like even though it was sometimes,
I feel I was back into it and I was
(27:39):
getting able to get good at bees. And as a
proof was yesterday that I felt I was ready to
comparee from the gey go.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
To two base hits to the opposite field especially, and
always seems like that's a key for you when you
can hit it to the opposite field, and how far
back does that go? And why is that important for
you to have success that way?
Speaker 7 (27:56):
And your seno lao's that's part of my game right
When I feel everything's clicking in the right direction hitting wise,
I feel.
Speaker 8 (28:06):
Like everything's going to the opposite side of the field.
So yesterday I feel things were working out in that way,
and I know when when things are working well, I'm
able to hit the ball that way and everything productive
for me.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
How they play the circumstances for your return. You play
third base because Jose Ramirez is on the injured list
third base first, How challenging is it to go from
short to third because it doesn't seem like they're that
far apart. But how different are the positions defensively.
Speaker 7 (28:32):
No, No Nold For me, is not much difference.
Speaker 8 (28:37):
I mean we go a little bit back. In my
own time here with the team, I started playing more
third base, so it's like a natural position for me
and so it hasn't taken much time to adjust and
to feel comfortable. And I feel for us as a
team as a privilege because we have two guys on
the left side that can easily play shorts to have
been a rock you're playing there right now, so both
of us can defend the positions. So I feel is
a natural progression for me and I feel really comfortable there.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
If Gabrielarius joining us along with Algi Rivero and Gabby
you come back. Jose Ramirez is not a part of
this team right now because of injury. You've been around
this team when he's been going well and been such
a key. Uh what does the team miss when he's
not here? But how can you overcome that and and
still have success as a teams?
Speaker 8 (29:20):
And the key for us is not trying to do
too much, trying more than we're capable of doing. And
something that I mentioned in an interview yesterday. Everybody has
to be aware of what they're capable of doing on
the field and not trying to do too much. Just
contributed enough of what they knew how to do in
the fielding for us, He's going to be in a
good position making sure that we're playing our base baseball
whenever Hosey comes back.
Speaker 1 (29:39):
And for you personally, you started a season, it seemed
like you were swinging the bat well and off to
a decent start. How frustrating was the injury for you,
especially when it occurred.

Well, no, no, I gotta consider that there's a little frustration

But I have to also give credit to the ware
how you know, the relationship that I have right now
with God in my spirituality that allows me to understand
that this is God's planned right Like even when I
was hitting the ball the best in the season, that
happened in reality, you know, thank God, being under God's
hands allow me to be a little more understanding the
situations and have the best mindset to get better and
get back to it whenever God won. And so this

is God's planned and I have to just follow it.
And and obviously thank God for allowing me to be
in a position what I could understand what happened doing
the injury.

And with all that said, do you feel, hey, maybe
this is your time. You're going to get an opportunity
here to really show what you can do and and
maybe you're at that point in your career where it
can come together for you and and performance wise be

Is young as It's not the ideal situations, but we
had to rush a little bit to come back. Is
a nobody wanted the houses to get injured, but in reality,
those are the preparation that I was having the rehab
just to be able to help the team in any

I was proud to be part of that situation. And
for me, the mindset is the same. I'm going to steal,
try to help the team in anywhere they need and

contribute in any little way that I can.

Jim Rosan Now's back with you from Houston, where the
Guardians are taking on the Astros this weekend. We have
a seven to fifteen first pitch on Saturday night, and
then the series closes on Sunday afternoon at two ten
Cleveland time. Then it's onto Chicago, the first meeting of
the year between the Guardians and the White Sox, the
(32:40):
surprise team maybe in all of baseball now as they
continue to hang around near the top of the American
League's Central Division. Gunner will Helmy is the replay review
coordinator for the Cleveland Guardians. He's the person in charge
of letting Stephen vote and his staff know if a
play is worthy of using a challenge on not the
(33:00):
but say at close play at first base or something controversial.
And we caught up with them during the last homestand
deep in the bowels of Progressive Field and an office
just off of the Guardian's new clubhouse where they watched
the replays and make the decisions. And we began by
asking Gunner about the improved clubhouse facilities following the renovations
(33:21):
last year, and Gunner says it's second to none compared
to most parks around the league.
Speaker 10 (33:26):
Yeah, first of all, thanks for having me, Rosie. Yeah,
you know, are set up here at home, very fortunate
for you know, the way that they designed everything for us.
You know, we're a little bit further away from the
field than we previously were, but you know, nice and quiet,
tucked away. No one really bothered us, which is nice
really like our set up at home. There's a lot
(33:46):
of good ones on the road as well, but you know,
nothing beats you know, the confines of being at home.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
And to take fans inside the process. Uh, we're looking
at three screens here. If there's a close play, something happens,
explain how quickly you have to make a decision and
what some of the keys are to making those decisions.
Speaker 10 (34:06):
Yeah, so we only get fifteen seconds from the time
that the umpires pick up voter with his hand up,
so it goes quick, you know. And I have one
of my screens here is the network feed that's that's
working live with what's going on on the field. And
then the other monitors that I have control a little
(34:26):
bit more control over. They they route them on like
a second and half delay, so the cameras I actually
get to kind of work with or a little bit
behind the game feed, so you know, it goes even
a little bit quicker. But you know, we have you know,
access to anywhere from you know, twelve to seventeen camera
(34:47):
angles and you know, generally what they tell us is
it comes down to, you know, the four high frame
rate cameras. There's always going to be at least three
most of the time, mostly four high frame rate cameras.
And uh, they tell us back in MLB that you know,
most of our overturns are gonna come from that, so
(35:08):
try to stick to just those four angles when trying
to make decisions. Sometimes they always give us that we
have to go away from that. But yeah, uh, you
know we have you know, really good camera operators. They
do a great job in the truck as well, you know,
finding the information that that we need. So you know,
it's all credit to the camera operators. We have nothing
that we can control in here. Uh, it's all. It's
(35:30):
all what they do on the field and what they
can grab on camera.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
Gunner will help me joining us. His name comes up
every now and again. Hammy'll give him great credit for overturns,
especially a key times and and Gunner, Uh, I feel
like there it's hard to prepare for this. You came
on board with Steven Bote when he was hired a
couple of years back, and uh, you start this high
pressure situation with very little background in this specific type
(35:57):
of replay review. What is your background and how quickly
were you able to get up to speed?
Speaker 5 (36:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (36:03):
Sure, so, Yeah, there's not a lot that you can
you know, prepare for, you know, being replay coordinator just
kind of comes to it.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
You know.
Speaker 10 (36:11):
I spent uh four seasons down in Columbus with our
Triple A affiliate and most of the time, you know,
I spent it in the dugout, so I was learning
from a lot of the coaches, you know, Tony Manzelino
who's now the bench coach with the Braves, Andy Tracy
who's still there. You know, we had a lot of
good coaches and managers that came through Columbus that helped,
you know, bring me up to speed as far as
(36:32):
you know how to watch the game, you know what
to look for, learning the rules. You know, a lot
of that comes into play with, you know, doing replay
and you know, credit to all of them for helping me,
you know, get up to speed and then you know,
try to figure out as we as we go here.
You know, rules are always changing. Event of a b
(36:54):
S you know, changes the timeline a little bit.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
But you know we're we're.
Speaker 10 (36:58):
Always adapting to you know, what the what they throw
at us.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
There have been times where you have impacted the game greatly.
I know for a player of the game after a
winners there's been awards, different awards over the years. Have
they ever given Gunner, will help me an award for
a great overturn now?
Speaker 10 (37:16):
And it's on me. It's all the players on the
field who are doing the you know, making the great
plays and I'm just you know, helping the game along
with you know, making sure the calls are being correct.

We join you this week from Houston, Texas Dyke and Park,
where the Guardians are taking on the Astros this weekend
in a three game series. Good show lined up for
you today. In just a little bit, we will hear
from Daniel Espino, who had an emotional Major league debut

on Wednesday in Milwaukee. We'll also visit with Parker Messk,
Reheese Hoskins, and Gabrie Larius. And we'll hear from video
replay review coordinator Gunner Will Helmi get the inner workings
of a system that has worked very well for the
Guardians the past couple of seasons. But first our weekend review,
and it's been a touch and go week for the
(01:36):
Guardians that began with bad injury news from last Saturday,
a game where three of their top hitters had to
leave the game, including Jose Ramirez, on Hell Martinez and
Chase de Lauder. All three eventually ended up on the
injured list. With different injuries, and that created some gaps
(01:57):
in the starting lineups each night and also the bench.
Monday was an off day, but Tuesday in Milwaukee a
two to one loss to the Brewers. Followed up on Wednesday,
the Guardians trying to get back on the winning track,
but a tough one for Cleveland. A couple of big
moments though in this one. Despite the loss the Brewers,
they jumped in front with three runs in the first inning,
(02:17):
two more in the second made it five to nothing
in a hurry, but the Guardians came back in the
fourth inning. Travis Pizana and Brian Rochio walked and then
kal man Zardo singled that loaded the bases for Daniel Schneeman.
A young right hander winds it up. Here's his two
to two swung on and there's a high fly ball,
deep bright field, grand slam steamen his second slam of
(02:44):
the year, and just like that, we have a ballgame again.
Brewers five, Guardians four as Daniel Schneeman goes deep home
run number six on the seat season, and there's a
spark for the Guardians as nothing going on through the
(03:06):
first three innings, but now four on the board. Already
three career Grand Slams for Schneman as he looks to
help the offense after the injuries to Ramirez, Martinez and
de Laughter. I got the Guardians right back in it,
but Milwaukee answered in the bottom of the fourth with
two more runs to make it seven to four, and
(03:26):
then two more in the eighth to put it out
of reach, and nine to four was the final. However,
the big story in Wednesday Night's game was on the
mound in the sixth inning as Daniel Espino made as
much anticipated major league debut. Let's listen in to Hammies
call of that sixth inning. Well, the long awaited major
(03:47):
league debut of Daniel Espino. I'm not as good a
feel good story as this organization will ever have. Seven
to four Milwaukee in the sixth, bottom third of the order.
His mom and other family members have been in Cleveland.
(04:09):
They have traveled here to Milwaukee, and Garrett Mitchell, the
first major league battery, faces and he misses inside ball one.
Daniel Espino a guy, then get get it up there
close to a one hundred miles per hour, good slider
and occasional curve. Change up the pitch to Mitchell and
(04:29):
a wave job as he threw that one right by
him at ninety nine miles per hour. The only sadness
you feel tonight is late father not here to see
his son. That pitch strength to his Dad tragically passed
(04:51):
away before Daniel could even get home to see him
in Panama from prostate cancer. Now now the one two pitch,
and it's inside two and two. Daniel a big, strong man,
built like an NFL linebacker. Although he has slimmed down
(05:13):
a little bit, he is still six two two twenty five.
The pitch to Mitchell and he's swing and miss struck
him out. How about that.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
On ninety nine mile an hour fastball and he blew
away Garrett Mitchell the first major league hitter he faces.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
One down. Here's Cooper Pratt got his first major league
hit tonight. Well, Daniel Lespino is going to help this
ball club A one time starter for now a bullpen.
The pitch and it's in there called strike on a slider.
His slider ninety two miles per hour, his fastball touch
(06:00):
one hundred the right hander from the set here it
comes fastball and the heat a little high, one hundred
miles per hour. Why is he not starting anymore well
because of all of the shoulder operations, at least for
this year. Keep him healthy, keep him in the bullpen.

Now the one one outside, two in one. The thing
about a Spino, he is still just twenty five years
of age. The right hander handset just below the chest.
He lets it a rip and a swing and a miss,
up and in with one hundred miles per hour one
(06:44):
and two. The count Daniel Espino from Panama, moved to
Georgia when he was a sophomore to play high school
baseball there and Cleveland even but he made him a
first round pick in twenty nineteen. Now the two to
(07:05):
two swing and a miss over matched another Brewers hitter
at one hundred miles per hour. Cooper Prant joins Garrett
Mitchell swinging and missing at the heat, and now David
Hamilton sack bunt and an infield hit. Two outs Numbedy
(07:31):
on seven to four Milwaukee here in the sixth. But
this is the story of the night for Cleveland. There's
his first curveball and a knee buckler for strike one.
He's got a starter's repertoire, but normally out of the
bullpen he'll be fastball slider, he'll be a one inning guy.
(07:51):
The oh one pitch swung on and somebody put it
in play, a pop to shallow left and Stephen Kwan
off Brian Rochio and the major league debut. Some wondered
if it would ever become a reality, including Daniel Espino,
with all the surgeries, all the trials, tribulation and rehab
(08:15):
he went through. That'll be quite a greeting in that
third base dugout, three up, three down, two strikeouts. What
to day it was for Daniel Espino, along with many
of his family members in attendance. And we'll talk to
him all about it coming up in our next segment.
Now on the Thursday's game, Guardians trying to salvage the
(08:37):
finale of the series in Milwaukee. But once again it
was the Brewers taking an early lead with a run
in the second, and it could have been more than
just one if not for a great defensive play from
another Guardian making his major league debut. That was outfielder
Khalil Watson.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Now, the three to one pitch swung on wine the right,
that's going to get cut on a dive by Watson
going toward the line.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Oh, what a play.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
By Khalil Watson that was ticketed down the right field
line for a bas is clearing double and on the
run he leaped outstretched toward the line and right and
rob zorties.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
In the third, the Guardians even things up with one
big swing from David Fry. The payoff swung on hit
high and deep to left center. Cheerio's back near the wall,
he leaps in.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
It is gone.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
David Fry with a solo homer to left center, and
we've got a one to one game. Tremendous shet bad
for David Fry on the ninth pitch, a towering solo
home run the left center. The Brewers went back on
top two to one with a run in the fourth,
but in the sixth, another big hit for the Guardians,

this time Kyle Manzardo. Now the one to one swung on.
This is line deep right field, back his powers. It
has gone and we are tied at two. Kyle man
Zardo a line drive home run to right number eight
for Kyle Manzardo and Cleveland's come back for the second

time today to tie it. It's a two to two
ball game here in the sixth, more good defense from
the Guardians, in the bottom of the sixth, as Brian
Rochio continues to pile up the highlights at shortstop, the
pits swung on.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Smashed the short back at Pickrochio fires to first and
get Sanchez after spinning around in shallow left. Oh boebe
that he played on the short hop with a batcan
and then spinning around in shallow left to throw out
Gary Sanchez, who gets robbed of a base in.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Then in the seventh, heading to the home run barrage
and snapping the tie was Travis Pizana the one.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Oh and he drives one to deep bright field hallway
back and go on into the second deck a line
drive missile and Travis Posana, with his fifth major league
home run, has put Cleveland on top three to two

here in enning number seven. Oh did he drill that
ball into the second deck in right? Guardian's added one
more in that seventh inning with a run, scoring on
a wild pitch to make it a four to two lead.
Then out of the bullpen, Tim Herron, Colin Holderman, and
Hunter Gaddis kept the Brewers off the scoreboard before turning
(11:44):
it over to Kate Smith. In the ninth.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Brewers all over the joint four to two Cleveland two.
Down in the eighth here's the one too, offering swinging
and a miss ninety seven miles an hour wipes out
yellis what a job by Kate Smith? Four to two,
Cleveland eight in the books. So the Guardians picked up

a win in Milwaukee. They could not, though, parlay that
into another one in Houston on Friday night, as the

in our weekend review segment, Wednesday night, the major league
debut for Daniel Espino following a long comeback from injury.
He pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts, and
we caught up with him the following day and asked

him if he's come down up of Cloud nine yet
after the memorable night in Milwaukee.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
I think I'm still in the cloud. But you know,
it's fun to see how, you know, everybody has shipping
into my life, into my career, and to go out
there and kind of like just kind of like the
finished brother sort of, it's kind of cool and speaks
(14:03):
a lot of speaks a lot about this organizations and
the people that have around me.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
You came up on Friday and then you don't pitch
till the following Wednesday, which I think for a lot
of players that can be tricky and not the easiest
thing to deal with. But you were saying earlier that
that might have been to your advantage last night and
helping you pitch the way you can.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Yeah, obviously, like you want to go out there as
soon as possible, and you want to trying to get
it out of the way. But I think that helped
me kind of like settle in a little bit. See
how the routines are, see how everything is, and at
the end, it's just it's just a game and going
out there enjoying it. Trusting my teammates, trusting my catchers
(14:45):
definitely was fun.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
And were you surprised at all at the command that
you had, that you weren't spraying the ball all over
and then that you were able to keep your delivery
where it needed to be to be able to throw
enough strikes to be effective.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Yeah, I think for the last couple of months, I
felt pretty good about how I'm commanding the strike zone,
I'm getting ahead, how I'm you know, using my my
tree pitches at fastball, the curve on the slider, just
confident on that. And like literally leading up to to
to yesterday, I felt that I was in a really
(15:20):
good spot. Just gotta continue to work and today's another
day and get ready to compete and go go out
there and attack the songe I, attack the hitter, and
you know, just just enjoy the game.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
You know, three up, three down, inning with a couple
of strikeouts and you get back to the dugout and
the reaction you receive from your teammates. What does that
mean to you teammates and coaches and everyone else involved.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
It means a lot. And I always talked about how
this group of guys, how how great they are, and
how good of a person they are, and to see them,
how they they they welcomed me this week is I
(16:06):
couldn't ask for more, even the coaching staff, and I
was talking about earlier about how everybody kind of like
has chipped in a little bit into my career, into
my life, and just that it just shows that, just
that it shows how many people that you can see
and also like the ones that you cannot see, the
(16:26):
people in Panama, you know, the guys that I work
out with, the guys in Goodyear, the doctor that performed
the surgery. I truly believe in that I couldn't be
here first without you know, God, and he created me
(16:47):
to have this destined. But also like He has blessed me,
were the surrounding of people that that want the best
for me, and that really showed and He will come
through the show.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
And in the stands last night, your mom and so
much family. Uh, what was it like to see them
after the game, after everything that had happened.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
It was surreal we were missing one guy up there
and that was kind of like the things postgame and
how we were so grateful about how you know, he
he pretty much gave everything for me to accomplish my dream,
(17:36):
and yesterday I did that. And I know that he's
proud of me, and like he's he's looking down to
me and he's he's smiling and telling everybody that his
son made.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
It to the big leagues.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
And many more appearances to come, I'm sure, Daniel, thanks

on Thursday in Milwaukee as he continues to pitch well
in what is still his rookie season, and he is
a serious Rookie of the Year candidate the way he's
been pitching. And again, it's his rookie year. Even though
he was called up and pitched well down this stretch,
he didn't compile enough innings to lose that rookie status.
(19:21):
And when we sat down with him in Houston on Friday,
we asked him that he still feels like a rookie
after the success of a season ago.
Speaker 6 (19:29):
Yeah, I still feel like one. You know, it's always
fun being the young guyland teams.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
There's a lot of.
Speaker 6 (19:34):
Fun stuff that you have to do, and then you know,
once I get out on the field, then it's just baseball.
But there's some stuff off the field where you're still
getting to feel like a rookie.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
And yesterday another excellent performance in a season filled with those.
But one of the things that stood out yesterday your
velocity was up significantly, and what do you attribute that to?
How did you get there?
Speaker 6 (19:56):
Yeah, we made some good adjustments within the delivery, just
get myself in the right spot moving down the mound,
and uh, you know, as a day, I felt good.
There's there's some a little bit more resks going into
that week, so you know, I felt really good, body
felt great, and you know, the delivery was where it
needed to be. So hopefully we can kind of continue
that trend. And now that I know what it's like
when it's at its best, you know, I can kind
(20:17):
of always revert back to that game and and find
that delivery to be able to get the VLO when
I need.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
It in season. How difficult is it to make those
kind of adjustments.
Speaker 6 (20:27):
Yeah, it's it's it's hard sometimes sometimes you have to
be willing to you know, the most important thing is
always getting the result. When you're in the game, you
want to help the team win and in any way
you can, and in the long run, sometimes that's sacrificing
some of you know, your your comfortable feelings to be
able to get to the best version of yourself. And
you know there's times ro out the year where where
(20:47):
pitchers have to do that and you know, I've been
kind of last three or four starts, been kind of
adjusting delivery to find you know, the right spot, right
spots in the delivery to be able to throw hard.
And I think, you know, I've just had to kind
of deal with what what comes with that, and seeing
the result during the Milwaukee game makes it all worth it,
because you know, not only is a good game, you
know with the heater velocity, but you know, the execution
(21:09):
of all the pitches really shows up when the delivery
is in the right spot. So hopefully we can keep
it there moving forward and those sacrifices will be worth it.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Harker, You you get back out there after a loss
in the first two games of this series, and everyone
I think likes to be a stopper if they can
in any way. Do you carry that to the mound
with you knowing that that the team would love to
get a win and get out of there with at
least one.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
Yeah, no doubt. There's there's a little bit of a
competitive edge, you know when when you know just haven't
won a game in a couple of days, you know
you really want to get one for everyone in the clubhouse,
and you know, when I come in between innings, you know,
try and fire everyone up, you know, make sure I'm
communicating and you know, if ro Gil and Khalil made
two really nice plays, I made sure I found them
in the dugout after that happened, because that's just huge
(21:51):
when you know, when you lose a couple of games
in your defense and making plays like that normally turns
into good offense. Everybody's fired up, locked in. I have played,
so it's definitely one of those things you care into
the start, but you try and make it a good
thing to where it's like feeling you for the start.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
And the team going through a stretch with injuries really
for the first time to keep players. But it seems
like the past several seasons resiliency has been a big
key for this club. And what are you singing in
there after the loss of Jose Ramirez and Chase the
Lotter and on El Martinez.
Speaker 6 (22:19):
Yeah, that's something that that even as a young new
guy on the team, you know, that's something that I
knew right off the bat of this team. No matter
no matter who's on the field, the same thing is
going to be expected, you know, from Jose as it
was for me on my debut. It's just that same
consistency and that that will to be on the field
and want.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
To win the game.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
And I think that you know has carried down and
all the guys that keep coming up with it's not
fun when you lose Jose and Marty and the lotter,
it's you know, you those are big spots to feel.
So when you have guys that just come up and
want to win just as bad as they do, then
and then it just makes it easier and you can
fight for those guys, but definitely can't wait to get
our guys back.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
So you pitch a series finale in Milwaukee, you won't
pitch here in Houston this weekend. What are those series
like when you go to a ballparking and you know
you're not going to participate, coach, because your turn's not
going to come up.
Speaker 6 (23:07):
Yeah, that's that's where the they making jokes. Sounds like
it's just just a mini vacation, but you know that's
really where those adjustments that we talk about come in.
With those series that you don't get to play, you
get to spend some time with the coaches out here
before the game starts and work on what didn't go
so well in the start before or try and you know,
repeat what did go really well. So it's one of
those series where I'm just going to try and learn
(23:28):
from the start of Milwaukee and see what I did
good in bad and try and build off that well.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Enjoy the weekend in Houston, Parker, thanks for coming back, Yes, sir,
thank you for having me. Really good picture right there,
Parker Messik, who is having a fine rookie season. Reyes
Hoskins is our next guest, and he was forced into
outfield duty last weekend after the Guardians lost three players
to injury in that Saturday game against the Tigers. It's
been a while since he's been out in the outfield,
(23:54):
and when we got to Milwaukee earlier in the week,
we asked him, have you packed the outfield love for
the trip?
Speaker 5 (24:00):
I do? Now, I do now. Yeah, obviously we had
a we had a couple of guys go down, but
at that point, obviously we are winning the game too.
You just kind of figure out how to get to
the end of the game while still having more runs
than the other team, and found some guys out of position,
but the pitchers kind of picked us up at the end,
and yeah, hopefully we don't see too many more Reese
(24:22):
Hoskins left field innings and over the.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Course of a long season. Though, when something like that
happens and those types of games happen, is it kind
of fun to kind of take you back to a
time that maybe you forget.
Speaker 5 (24:33):
Keeps you on your feet for sure, and you know,
with one hundred and sixty two of these things, like
those types of moments are pretty valuable when kind of surprised,
but you're still competing within the game, So we'll take
that for what that is. But again, like hopefully we
hopefully we don't we don't run into that issue again.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
And offensively personally, how do you feel things are coming
along for you where you'd like to get to?
Speaker 5 (24:58):
Well, I've been up and down a little bit. I
kind of have found some footing at least here towards
the end of May and into June. Hopefully I'll you know,
get a little bit more consistent at bats here. I
should at least with some guys down and hopefully that
will lead to some more consistent results. If I can
continue to get on base and provide you know, some
slug when I can, I think I'll be a value
(25:21):
to this lineup.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
You mentioned some guys down, and obviously the big one
is Jose Ramirez will be out for a while and
Art and soul guy of this team. As a veteran player,
you've been around teams where that's happened before. What are
some of the keys and from your perspective, how big
a loss is it?
Speaker 5 (25:37):
Well, I mean, anytime you lose a you know, a
future Hall of Famer or you're gonna get worse that day.
But I think the biggest key for our group is
not trying to step up so to say, right like,
it's just it's it's on us to be as good
as we we can and not try to be more
than we are.
Speaker 7 (25:55):
Right.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
Nobody on this team, really, almost nobody in this league
can be Host Aramirez. But if we all focus on
what we can do to be our best versions of us,
and then I think we're gonna have a pretty good
chance to win every night, all right.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
And not to put names out there, but you came
in with the visiting team. It's noted throughout baseball the
visiting team hotel can be certain rooms haunted. Sure do
you believe that? And then have you ever run into
anything that would have you believed that.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
I think I do believe that. I don't have any
personal experiences with that, but you know, there's so much
life that has gone on before us and we'll go
on after us, that it's kind of hard not to
believe some of that stuff. So so you got to go. Okay,
nights sleep last night. So far, we got a couple
more nights. I'm not gonna hold my breath, but yeah,
(26:45):
so far, so good, Reech, thank you appreciate it. Yeah,
thanks to go guards. Always fun to visit with Reee Hoskins.
You never know where the conversation's gonna go, but that
was fun talking to him about on and off the
field happenings In Milwaukee. Gabriel Aarius is back with the
ball club after a lengthy stay on the injured list
with a hamstring injury, and along with translator Oggi Rivero,
(27:08):
he talked about how the rehab process went and how
he feels getting back in the game action b B.
Speaker 8 (27:18):
Always, it was a good process for us, the rehab.
I think we did all the correct things of the
training stuff suggested for a proper rehab, and I was
really happy they wear how things are unfolded and also
they wear how we started getting ready in triple A.
I feel like the games were really like similar to
to gam unlike activities, and I feel like it didn't
keep a bit. I feel like even though it was sometimes,
I feel I was back into it and I was
(27:39):
getting able to get good at bees. And as a
proof was yesterday that I felt I was ready to
comparee from the gey go.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
To two base hits to the opposite field especially, and
always seems like that's a key for you when you
can hit it to the opposite field, and how far
back does that go? And why is that important for
you to have success that way?
Speaker 7 (27:56):
And your seno lao's that's part of my game right
When I feel everything's clicking in the right direction hitting wise,
I feel.
Speaker 8 (28:06):
Like everything's going to the opposite side of the field.
So yesterday I feel things were working out in that way,
and I know when when things are working well, I'm
able to hit the ball that way and everything productive
for me.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
How they play the circumstances for your return. You play
third base because Jose Ramirez is on the injured list
third base first, How challenging is it to go from
short to third because it doesn't seem like they're that
far apart. But how different are the positions defensively.
Speaker 7 (28:32):
No, No Nold For me, is not much difference.
Speaker 8 (28:37):
I mean we go a little bit back. In my
own time here with the team, I started playing more
third base, so it's like a natural position for me
and so it hasn't taken much time to adjust and
to feel comfortable. And I feel for us as a
team as a privilege because we have two guys on
the left side that can easily play shorts to have
been a rock you're playing there right now, so both
of us can defend the positions. So I feel is
a natural progression for me and I feel really comfortable there.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
If Gabrielarius joining us along with Algi Rivero and Gabby
you come back. Jose Ramirez is not a part of
this team right now because of injury. You've been around
this team when he's been going well and been such
a key. Uh what does the team miss when he's
not here? But how can you overcome that and and
still have success as a teams?
Speaker 8 (29:20):
And the key for us is not trying to do
too much, trying more than we're capable of doing. And
something that I mentioned in an interview yesterday. Everybody has
to be aware of what they're capable of doing on
the field and not trying to do too much. Just
contributed enough of what they knew how to do in
the fielding for us, He's going to be in a
good position making sure that we're playing our base baseball
whenever Hosey comes back.
Speaker 1 (29:39):
And for you personally, you started a season, it seemed
like you were swinging the bat well and off to
a decent start. How frustrating was the injury for you,
especially when it occurred.
Speaker 7 (29:50):
Well, no, no, I gotta consider that there's a little frustration
in there.
Speaker 8 (29:58):
But I have to also give credit to the ware
how you know, the relationship that I have right now
with God in my spirituality that allows me to understand
that this is God's planned right Like even when I
was hitting the ball the best in the season, that
happened in reality, you know, thank God, being under God's
hands allow me to be a little more understanding the
situations and have the best mindset to get better and
get back to it whenever God won. And so this
(30:19):
is God's planned and I have to just follow it.
And and obviously thank God for allowing me to be
in a position what I could understand what happened doing
the injury.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
And with all that said, do you feel, hey, maybe
this is your time. You're going to get an opportunity
here to really show what you can do and and
maybe you're at that point in your career where it
can come together for you and and performance wise be
really special.
Speaker 7 (30:41):
Jo how.
Speaker 8 (30:46):
Is young as It's not the ideal situations, but we
had to rush a little bit to come back. Is
a nobody wanted the houses to get injured, but in reality,
those are the preparation that I was having the rehab
just to be able to help the team in any
position they need to me. You know, I know, I
know that role that was gonna be par of and
I was proud to be part of that situation. And
for me, the mindset is the same. I'm going to steal,
try to help the team in anywhere they need and
(31:07):
contribute in any little way that I can.

Jim Rosan Now's back with you from Houston, where the
Guardians are taking on the Astros this weekend. We have
a seven to fifteen first pitch on Saturday night, and
then the series closes on Sunday afternoon at two ten
Cleveland time. Then it's onto Chicago, the first meeting of
the year between the Guardians and the White Sox, the
(32:40):
surprise team maybe in all of baseball now as they
continue to hang around near the top of the American
League's Central Division. Gunner will Helmy is the replay review
coordinator for the Cleveland Guardians. He's the person in charge
of letting Stephen vote and his staff know if a
play is worthy of using a challenge on not the
(33:00):
but say at close play at first base or something controversial.
And we caught up with them during the last homestand
deep in the bowels of Progressive Field and an office
just off of the Guardian's new clubhouse where they watched
the replays and make the decisions. And we began by
asking Gunner about the improved clubhouse facilities following the renovations
(33:21):
last year, and Gunner says it's second to none compared
to most parks around the league.
Speaker 10 (33:26):
Yeah, first of all, thanks for having me, Rosie. Yeah,
you know, are set up here at home, very fortunate
for you know, the way that they designed everything for us.
You know, we're a little bit further away from the
field than we previously were, but you know, nice and quiet,
tucked away. No one really bothered us, which is nice
really like our set up at home. There's a lot
(33:46):
of good ones on the road as well, but you know,
nothing beats you know, the confines of being at home.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
And to take fans inside the process. Uh, we're looking
at three screens here. If there's a close play, something happens,
explain how quickly you have to make a decision and
what some of the keys are to making those decisions.
Speaker 10 (34:06):
Yeah, so we only get fifteen seconds from the time
that the umpires pick up voter with his hand up,
so it goes quick, you know. And I have one
of my screens here is the network feed that's that's
working live with what's going on on the field. And
then the other monitors that I have control a little
(34:26):
bit more control over. They they route them on like
a second and half delay, so the cameras I actually
get to kind of work with or a little bit
behind the game feed, so you know, it goes even
a little bit quicker. But you know, we have you know,
access to anywhere from you know, twelve to seventeen camera
(34:47):
angles and you know, generally what they tell us is
it comes down to, you know, the four high frame
rate cameras. There's always going to be at least three
most of the time, mostly four high frame rate cameras.
And uh, they tell us back in MLB that you know,
most of our overturns are gonna come from that, so
(35:08):
try to stick to just those four angles when trying
to make decisions. Sometimes they always give us that we
have to go away from that. But yeah, uh, you
know we have you know, really good camera operators. They
do a great job in the truck as well, you know,
finding the information that that we need. So you know,
it's all credit to the camera operators. We have nothing
that we can control in here. Uh, it's all. It's
(35:30):
all what they do on the field and what they
can grab on camera.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
Gunner will help me joining us. His name comes up
every now and again. Hammy'll give him great credit for overturns,
especially a key times and and Gunner, Uh, I feel
like there it's hard to prepare for this. You came
on board with Steven Bote when he was hired a
couple of years back, and uh, you start this high
pressure situation with very little background in this specific type
(35:57):
of replay review. What is your background and how quickly
were you able to get up to speed?
Speaker 5 (36:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (36:03):
Sure, so, Yeah, there's not a lot that you can
you know, prepare for, you know, being replay coordinator just
kind of comes to it.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
You know.
Speaker 10 (36:11):
I spent uh four seasons down in Columbus with our
Triple A affiliate and most of the time, you know,
I spent it in the dugout, so I was learning
from a lot of the coaches, you know, Tony Manzelino
who's now the bench coach with the Braves, Andy Tracy
who's still there. You know, we had a lot of
good coaches and managers that came through Columbus that helped,
you know, bring me up to speed as far as
(36:32):
you know how to watch the game, you know what
to look for, learning the rules. You know, a lot
of that comes into play with, you know, doing replay
and you know, credit to all of them for helping me,
you know, get up to speed and then you know,
try to figure out as we as we go here.
You know, rules are always changing. Event of a b
(36:54):
S you know, changes the timeline a little bit.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
But you know we're we're.
Speaker 10 (36:58):
Always adapting to you know, what the what they throw
at us.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
There have been times where you have impacted the game greatly.
I know for a player of the game after a
winners there's been awards, different awards over the years. Have
they ever given Gunner, will help me an award for
a great overturn now?
Speaker 10 (37:16):
And it's on me. It's all the players on the
field who are doing the you know, making the great
plays and I'm just you know, helping the game along
with you know, making sure the calls are being correct.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Well.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
It is all part of what makes this team tick
