from hams Arborcare joins us this morning. Kevin, how you
doing this week?

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Great? We just got back from the Winter conference for
the Wisconsin Arbors Association.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
You get back at touchdown and it's it's in the
fifty exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
I know crazy.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Let's talk about that. I mean, you're looking today expecting
a high of fifty eight. And I was walking in
the woods yesterday and the day before and it was
the ground was mushy. What does that mean for arbor care.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, well it means adjustment. We had a big, you know,
removal project on the docket today, but you know it
was a large expansive yard. It would be very difficult
to you know, put protective mats down for everything. And
you know when you have pretty deep frost and then

(01:40):
this warm weather you basically have like a perma frost,
a mushy two to three inches on top, you will
absolutely destroy a lawn, right, And so we had to
you know, rearrange the schedule yesterday on our way back
from the conference for like, okay, that one's not going

(02:01):
to work. And you know we've gotten a text from
the client, you know, kind of concerned, you know, and
take extra care.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Our extra care is you'll be done next week when
it has a low of eleven yes, prior to so yeah,
just you know, thinking through the schedule and and doing
smart work and thinking, you know, which which one best.
There's the clients we have.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
And this is that time of year, Kevin, I know,
we're just depending on as you talk about the forecast,
things can kind of change on a dime. And one
of the things that is inevitable spring and summer will
be here, which means oak pruning. We're kind of at
that point right now, right where we've really got to
you guys are really getting to that. And for folks
that haven't haven't done something, now is the time to

(02:48):
be doing that, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, it's down to urgency for those that haven't you know,
been on. We've got most all of our stuff, you know,
already done, and if it's not, it's in the schedule.
So yeah, if you want yours in that schedule, it's
getting down urgency because of the degree days are officially

(03:12):
counting on the clock since January, so we have the
oak quilt model. I actually haven't tuned into it yet.
I imagine I'll do a post of that today because
everybody's going to be thinking, you know, oh, fifty eight
degrees is oak quilt spreading right now? No, No, it's not.

(03:36):
So it's probably an appropriate day to do a post
along that line. But it is, you know, lending towards
you know, in early spring. So we better have our
ear to the ground, eyes to the skies and make
sure we are inside the protocols.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Today is the day you got to give Kevin and
the crew at Hams Barbacare call eight sixty sixty five
nine six five three nine six. That's eight sixty six
five nine six five three nine six. And with the
varied weather, I know it allows you to do varied
jobs as well. So it's a great time to get
on that schedule at Ham'sarborcare again their number eighty six
six five nine six five three nine six. Of course

(04:15):
you heard Kevin Mention also making a social media post. Course,
he's on YouTube. We've got a great Instagram as well,
Kevin ham Game of Trees. You can find them there.
Make sure you subscribe to that YouTube channel. Always great
video going up. And Kevin started this week's conversation off
talking about the Wisconsin Arbor Association Winter Conference and this
is the chance for you and the whole team at

(04:36):
Hams Arborcare to get together with other arborists and and
share some information. What's kind of the big takeaway this year.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, we had some good seminars yesterday on oak decline.
There there is a phenomenon of like a you know, disease,
a spiral, and it's a combination of several factors and

(05:06):
the issue is, you know, you might you know a
lot of people are going online to double check the
information they get from somebody. And when somebody sees an
oak in decline, it's the most common term known to
people in this area is oak wilt. Oh, it must
be oak wilt. And then you go online and you

(05:30):
have completely different information or you actually have oak wilt
diagnosed in your yard, and you go online and you
you search, an oak decline comes up and that it
has a whole bunch of different protocols and and so,
you know, just like anything, you know, AI is great,

(05:51):
but you have to know what you're asking and you
have to kind of tailor it to the exact scenario.
And there's a lot of factors involved in the oak
declined spiral, and a lot of it comes down to,
you know, keeping oaks in a proper environment. There was

(06:12):
a situation shared where a very high, high end client
bought a property for these beautiful oak savannah oaks. This
was in Ohio and they had a long gravel driveway
and of course he had deep pockets and he thought,
I'm going to pave this driveway, and of course the
driveway weaved around this oak you know, glade, and he

(06:37):
raised the driveway and paved it so what's a raised
paved area do it's runoff? And now a bunch of
water ran off into those oaks, put too much water
in there. They get in fight tops through a root decline,
a lot of different issues. Now that beautiful thing which
he bought the property for is now in decline because

(06:58):
he thought paved was better and gravel.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Do you ever get consultations from from folks before they
do things like that? Is? Uh? Because uh, my naive
my naivete would be like, I'll just pave it all
be good. You are people typically wise enough to say, hey,
if especially you think about, you know, an oak tree,
and especially if you're buying the property for that particular tree,
and and just the love of of of how they look.

(07:21):
Do you get folks that are proactive and saying, let's, uh,
let's talk with with Kevin and arboris master arbust before
we make any changes around these trees?

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Rarely? Okay, Ordinarily the consultation is something's wrong with my trees,
and it's after the activity has done. We a funny
story that we heard in the conference with a guy
called master arburist in Uh to look at some these
this beautiful oak tree and he said, all the best
thing you can do for this is put a malterring

(07:54):
in and he talks about make make it, you know,
as big as you can. Well, what he did is
he created a ring around the tree by escavating down
over forges, and then he put mulch all in the
outer area that he had excavated down and around the
tree was still turfed and where he put his little

(08:18):
activity stuff. So now they're going to trample all over
the tree and there's no malt directly near the tree.
He did exactly opposite of what the arborous said, and
it was I mean, he just backed up his tree tremendously.
So you know, there's just a lot of misunderstanding of

(08:39):
what is good for a tree. And mulching around a tree,
not over malting, not volcano multing, but two to four
inches of mulch around the tree, not up against the trunk,
is the single best thing you can do for a tree.
There are trials where they show this, you know, a
six year trial and the only thing they did was

(09:01):
add mulch and the tree. You can just see this
tree progressively get better.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Does it does that? Is that obviously moisture and kind
of temperature control. Is that really what it's providing, Yes,
very much.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
So, it's the cooling effect of that mulch. Now, consequently,
if you pile it up and make volcano mulch, that
creates a composting heat. So you can actually create a
negative effect by putting too deep of mulch. So just
like anything more is not better two to four inches

(09:39):
and not against the trunk. And yeah, and we mitigate
a lot of situations where you know, a lot of
these homeowners associations are having big mulching and it's just like, Oh,
that's the way it's supposed to look, and it's really
a problem that's coming back actually, and it's like, oh,
you're going to have a hard I'm convinced and so

(10:01):
and so, you know, because that's the way it's supposed
to look.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
But yeah, we we do airspade work where we can
excavate these trees out and really renew them and help help.
And then of course we put down biotr and soil amendments.
So there's ope.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Oh I think we got partially connected there. But as
we talked this morning with Kevin ham of Hams Barborcare,
we think about the about the the weather, and of
course this time of year it is so vitally important
to get on the schedule. I just pick up phone
game a call eight six six five nine six five
three nine six. That's eight six six five nine six
