nine six five three nine six. That's eight six six
five nine six five three nine six. And joining us
this morning from hams Arborcare is Master Arborist Kevin Ham. Kevin,
how you doing this morning?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
I'm joining you from New Hampshire, New Hampshire.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yeah, come out, Oh what's what is That's not the
granite State? What is New Hampshire's what is it? Grants?

Speaker 2 (01:01):
The way to go?

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Are there any trees that can crack granite and and
put down roots and and and granite?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Sure, they're they're powerful, they do what they Yeah, we're going, yeah,
we're going to talk about some recent projects you've been
working on. Kevin involving some some heavy equipment, some nearby
power lines. How that's all assessed, and you know, some
of this stuff you get to avoid climbing. And I
didn't want to ask you though about climbing before before

(01:35):
we get to some of that recent stuff been doing
with the with the UH with the heavy gear. I
was watching a video I think it was yesterday Instagram
or YouTube of yours. You're up in a tree and UH,
you're like taking some of the final cuts of the
limbs off, and you're just standing on the main trunk
at the top, and you're you're dropping stuff down with
a line and some other things. But something dawned on me, Kevin,

(01:58):
And I don't know what it is. But when I
see the trees full of limbs and that are coming
down when they start out in their full limbs, and
I see you up in those up in the trees,
and I see the climbers up in the trees, I
don't get nervous. And I don't know what it is.
I get when I see just like a simple single

(02:18):
trunk of a tree and I see you up on
the top of it with no branches, I know it's
probably even much more stable because all that weightsman, but
it gives me butterflies in my stomach. Kevin, I get nervous.
I don't know why it is that way.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
But actually, Sean, it doesn't start to move until the
branches are off.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Oh really, is that maybe?

Speaker 2 (02:38):
What you know the high line walker, you know, the
tightrope walker with the long stick. Yes, that's the ballast,
and so the branches are the ballast. Once you take
that ballast off, that trunk is moving below you back
and forth. The top is wobbling around. In fact, that

(02:58):
big tall pine, the tall white pine, we left the
top on it because we were going to rig another
oak tree to it, and and that you know, that
ballast on top was important to have there too, to
buffer the the weight in the shock of the of

(03:20):
the rigging. Yeah, those branches sometimes on dead trees, if
we have to climb them, I'll leave the lower branches
and as a dampening effect for the harmonics, because the
harmonics harmonics can tear the tree apart. You know, you
can have a failure somehow by by the vibrations, but

(03:41):
if you have those lower branches on, you can you
can dampen those vibrations and harmonics and and and maybe
stay a lot literally the type of decisions you make.
And so yeah, we're all here uh this week looking
at some stable getting machines because of Cebogan. It's it's

(04:04):
a German company and their their material handlers made for
for trees and they just they revolutionize what you're doing
and you can take down in minutes what would take
take a climber a long time. And of course not
every tree is able to be accessed by equipment. There's

(04:25):
there's always that there's there's always a place for climbing
somewhere on a hill. Uh that that tree you were
watching the other day, cene Bogan wouldn't be able to
reach that one, but uh, you know, uh it can
reach a lot of them, and it's so fast and
so yeah, it was you. You'll see the number of

(04:49):
videos that I've done with them.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Yeah, and I was watching some with the with the
heavy equipment today and and uh and kind of seeing
how that all works. And that is something to Kevin,
is I think worth worth exploring a bit. Is the
type of investment we talk about, the investments you make
in people and and you know, you really really do
make a great commitment to your to your team, to
your staff at Hams arborcaret a lot of education, but

(05:14):
you also make a big investment in the right tools,
proper tools. And I don't know what the what the
price tag is on some of these things. I do
know just with my eyeballs, they're probably not particularly cheap.
And I and I'm gonna guess that's.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Cert in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Wow.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Yeah, So making that investment and it's and people say, well, well,
why would you do that? Well, a couple of reasons. One,
it makes work more efficient efficient, But it's also a
safety thing as well, isn't it Having the right tool
for the job, no matter what the cost is, is
definitely improves overall safety, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Yes? And and it's you know, it's also the type
of work. You know, if there's a job that you know,
sixty one hundred trees need to come come down or something,
you know, maybe roadside work, you know, a freeway project.
You know, a conventional tree company cannot even begin to

(06:13):
compete for that job because you can't physically do it
with just manpower when a machine can take down those
trees and admit it, Yeah, and you know, it's just
it is what it is. I just told the story
by by Dan Mayer that the telphany I was observing

(06:33):
out there. You know, he had a municipality call him
up and there was there's some storm work and stuff
and it, and they wanted they thought they needed a
grapple truck and a you know, a loader. And he says, no,
we can send the Cena bogan over and and just
get the job done for him. And he had to,

(06:55):
like you had to like say, I'll send it for
free if you're not absolutely blown away. As they go
over there, and they did ten times the amount of
work that they thought, he goes, well, what about that
tree over there, how about that one in the house, Well,
that's the customers responsibility. Well, wouldn't you want to do
something for your tax payer? You know, they take it
off the house and they put it down. And how

(07:17):
about that tree across the street. He goes, well, she's
been asking me for seven years to take that train down.
He goes, well, why don't we get her off your back?
And he takes the tree down in a few minutes.
And it's just so with a night and day different
of what can be done with that kind of machine,
and so it opens up other avenues of work. You know,

(07:37):
we're not necessarily gonna get that in the backyard, but
you can. You can use timber matting, and these machines
can move you know, a four by sixteen foot eight
inch stick oak matt you know, like the big timber
mats that they use for high lines and stuff, and
they can set them down on a golf course, you know,

(07:58):
fair away and and leap frog themselves across the fair way.
Nobody has to lift a finger and the machine does
it all. And then take a tree down on a
golf course and then leap frog themselves back out and
ranke and blow and you can't even tell the machine
was there. It's just a whole different world that can
open up many different you know facets, and you know,

(08:21):
so as I'm I'm looking at Ham's armacare is going
to be well into the future with my son and
son in law, we have to look at mechanizations as
an option.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Did you bring a did you bring a trailer out
to New Hampshire with you?

Speaker 2 (08:37):
I did it. I did it right now. I'm at
RBG Inc. It's the dealer for our Dino lift you
know that that people will see that we use and
and so I'm I'm doing an event with them. A
few arborists in this area that follow me or are
showing up today and well, uh, we'll spend a few

(09:00):
hours here and help promote their business.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Oh, it should be. It should be a fruitful and
productive visit to the to the great Granite State, Live
free or die. I do believe it says on the
license plates out that way as well, which is something
we can all.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
I have seen that around here. You get yourself around, don't.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
I try to. I try to see that for sure.
And as we talk with Kevin Ham of Ham's Arbor,
Carrot is a great day to get on that schedule.
Give them a call. Eight sixty six five nine six
five three nine six. That's eight six six five nine
six five three nine six Kevin. Enjoy your time out
in New Hampshire. Those quaint villages. I don't know that
there's anything unquaint about New Hampshire. I think everything is.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Oh it's beautiful. Yeah, exactly right. You dive by ability
to say that's been there a while.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yes, Well, safe travels. Thank you for joining us, and
we'll talk real soon.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
All right, thanks Kevin ham hams.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
