Speaker 1 (00:00):
If you're listening all across the Fighting Hawks radio network,
you can go back and listen to our conversations here
tonight by going to Hawk Talk. That's h a WK
Talk and our conversations will be there from Danny Froyd
to Dane Jackson tonight. So we bring in a new
NCCHC playoff format used for a long time. It was

(00:23):
going down to the Twin Cities. It had ran its course.
A lot of the conferences around the country have kind
of gone to a similar format or almost an identical
format as this, where you basically, if you get that
top seed, you can host throughout you get and basically
all the chalk moved on in the from the opening round.

(00:44):
So Northacota draws dilute. The Bulldogs have had a fantastic season.
They're most likely in the mix of the national tournament
as well. Coach Sandlin and his team. And that's your
opponent here in a one game knockout semifinal with the
winner moving on to the next week's final. It's North Dakota.
You guys host that as well, but the Bulldogs and
you've had some really classic clashes this year. They're there.

(01:08):
They are formidable side coach Sanlin's got that power power
line that he's got some special players and so you
get your hands full this weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeah, for sure. You know, I think going back to
kind of the new UH playoff formatic, I think we
kind of looked around and we saw, you know, in
the Big Ten, and we saw the c c CHA
have some of those final games where they had just
sold out home crowds and people were going crazy. So
that was I think that's kind of got us thinking
we should we should join in on that. So obviously
to win the Penrose Cup is always exciting, but really

(01:36):
this year had extra meaning to know that you get
to play in your own barn, So we're we're excited.
You know. Obviously Delusa a great matchup. They have some
of the best players in the league on their top
line there and Plants and Shagaby. Their power play is
one of the best in the country. So we'll have
to really be ready to check hard, but do it
in a discipline manner and stay out of that penalty box.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Yeah. They you know, that line stresses everybody across the league,
whether it's Western Michigan, Denver, North Dakota. They're just that
skilled and I know you have trust throughout your lineup.
You rarely have ever deviate from one through four. You
just keep rolling them. In certain circumstances against Duluth, maybe
this year you did have to find certain individuals that

(02:17):
had a makeup that maybe we're a little better and
that may be a benefit to have the last change
if you need to correct.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, for sure, we've done that at times where we, uh,
you know, some of our guys that are really good
defensive players, can really skate and excellent checking and good
defensive DNA. We uh most of times put those guys
out and kind of try to match up a little
bit more against the top guys. Obviously, they're still gonna
it's hockey, it's fluid, and you're gonna be making plays
out there. But uh, you know some guys that have
just kind of when they're tasked with that assignment, they

(02:45):
can they can do a good job on that, and
so we'll make sure whoever's out against them their we
have a mindset that check them hard, be physical, and
uh be really reloading above them. We kind of we
know when they get to skate entry into our zone
and delay and skate latterly they're dangerous and they really
make good plays. So it's important to really check well
through the neutral zone and for our de man to
really stand up.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
I always say that against a team, and this may
be lack of knowledge or whatever, but I always say,
if you end up losing possession of the puck, it's
best just having lost it on a four check deep
in their end, because then they got to go two
hundred feet basically with the puck, and a good four
check by your team certainly helps and aids in that.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Yeah, for sure, you know, it's always you know, we
talk a lot about you know, playoff puck decisions and
just kind of letting the puck do the work. So
we're gonna we're gonna take risk when there's chances to
make plays and and create offense. And then there's also
times when you know they're checking well and you got
to just take what the game gives you and put
pucks ahead. And like you say, when you you know,
when you put pucks behind their team and you make
them kind of come two hundred feet, it's it's hard

(03:44):
to create offense that way. Whereas if you make mistakes
kind of especially near your net, and it's a quick turnover,
it can end up in your net pretty quickly.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Well, it's a huge weekend. We talked about all Green
all in and it was a widely recept received and
applied here over this past weekend. I anticipate it's going
to be a great, well attended series. We've already seen
people are gonna be coming back from spring break. I
would assume be in the building, be part of the electricity, right, Yeah,

(04:11):
I sure hope.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
So you know, our guys have worked hard throughout the
year to earn this, right, I know there's been years
when we played in the playoffs and you know, students
are gone and families are gone on spring break and stuff.
But yeah, we sure hope that people make the effort
to come and support us. It's a huge factor in
us playing well. We've had a great home record and
a huge part of that is that we have those
outstanding fans. So we're hoping they can be like Saturday

(04:34):
night and have a full burn and everybody kind of
cheering us on and wearing green.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Well, it's awesome to be a part of this new
playoff format, going further in it, and we want to
see yet another step happen. This weekend. It doesn't happen easy.
There's a lot of work to be put in. Have
a great week of prep and a good look on
Saturday night.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Awesome. Thanks Paul.
