the twenty twenty five to twenty six season of Hawk
Talk all across the Funny Hawks Radio Network. We're glad
to have you along with us here on this Tuesday night,
and we're gonna have a good celebration and good send up.
Here's the thing I always wonder when we start this
thing every season, I always wonder what our final show

(00:23):
will be. Now, this final show was actually a make
good because we had to say overwah to a show
back in December due to bad weather. And my question
was what will the final show in March be like?
Will it be like spring outside or will it be winter? Well,
I guess when we look out the windows here at
the beautiful five oh six Pub downtown Grand Forks, it's

(00:45):
still winter at least for today. And of course remember
the five oh six Pub all season long through the spring.
What a great place to watch March madness. Right, Well,
watch all the games of March, watch the NCAA Hockey Tournament,
sit and camp yourself out at the five oh six
Pub and join your favorite beverages with the great team
here of the five oh six Pub. Glad to have

(01:08):
you along all through the great sports seasons ahead and
into the summer. When they break out the patio. It
doesn't get much better as to be camped out in
a perfect spot heading into downtown. Remember that Hugos is
the official grocery store of University of North Dakota Athletics.
Hugos is your go to headquarters for getting geared up,
not only for tailgating during the football season, but for

(01:29):
all your holiday get togethers Easters on the horizon. I've
got to color up some eggs. Probably maybe you do
as well. I know where I'm gonna get all my materials.
It's gonna be Hugos. And remember they're the official grocery
store of University of North Dakota Athletics. We want to
welcome you all across the Fighting Hawks radio network. Tonight's
stream live worldwide by utilizing that iHeartRadio app. All you

(01:51):
have to do is stream at live worldwide. You just
go to the iHeartRadio app iHeartRadio dot Com search to
that search park KKXLAM and you can listen live anywhere
in the world. And if you miss any of our
conversations tonight, you can go back and listen by searching
Hawk talk in that same app or same area of

(02:12):
the website. So search Hawk and go back to listen
to any of our conversations throughout the season with our
head coaches. We're gonna have a great show for you tonight.
We're gonna talk some you indie hockey as we build
up to an NCAA tournament. I've got my green beer
maybe and by the way, happy Saint Patrick's day. Top
of the day to you. All right, I'm wearing my

(02:35):
green all right, I'm all green. I'm all in. And
we're into the postseason with North to Go to Hockey
and head coach Dane Jackson. He's a busy guy right now.
And head coach Dane Jackson joins us. Now, let's give
him a big round of applause as North to Go
to Hockey turns its attention to the NCAA Tournament selection
Sunday just around the corner, and Coach Jackson, thanks for

(02:55):
coming out all season long. Great to see you, and
thanks for sending some of your staff to get to
know the fans out and about as well. Yeah, let's
just briefly talk Saturday. It just didn't click, for whatever reason,
didn't click that night your opponent, It sure did, and
a tip of the cap to them. But the great
thing about it is is that now the team gets

(03:15):
back into the building and gets refocused and here we go.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Right.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yeah, it wasn't our best, that's for sure. You know,
we thought we actually had some pretty good chances to
score in the first period. Their goaltender results standing. We
had to do a little bit better of a job
of getting to the net for secondary chances because if
he was seeing it, he was stopping it. So, you know,
it's one of those games where we wish we had
a little stronger performance, But like you say, I think

(03:39):
it's kind of a it's a good chance for us.
After the game, I didn't even really speak of the game.
I just kind of talked about our next twelve days
of preparation about you know, it's been a long time
since we had lost a game in regulation, and maybe
it's a good time to do it and get our
guys kind of hungry focused, and we're gonna put a
lot of work and time and effort in over this
next stretch to making sure we're playing our best game
on the twenty six or twenty seventh.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Sometimes when you're playing an opponent like Duluth. Often the
reminder is is that the simple play is often the
play that you just gotta to make at times, and
and you're not gonna get those opportunities against a good
talented team. If you mess up a play where you're
trying to make it a little bit fancy and you
don't make it all of a sudden, a team of

(04:22):
that magnitude is going to take advantage. And that's the
reminder here, and it's probably a good reminder knowing that
every team you face the rest of the way, no
matter who you're paired against the NCAA tournament, is a worthy,
very high level team, and sometimes those reminders are necessary.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah, you know, we talked about it quite a bit
in our preparation about kind of short pass support and
kind of you know, managing the game and putting bucks
behind them.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
We just I think what three of the goals were
direct results.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Of us making kind of long passes that were you know,
ill advised, So those came back on quick transition and
bid us. So yeah, we've obviously it's a I think
sometimes the players get a little tired of hearing about you,
but I think you know that's the best reminder as
a loss and just say, hey, boys, this is you know,
we're all on the same page. We're trying to do

(05:08):
this for a reason, and we'll get dialed in and
get better with our puck management coming forward.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I think we'll hit on this again because you talked
a little bit about it this morning in regards to
one of the points of emphasis moving forward for your team,
where you feel like you can make some strides and
it could be quite visible next time out. Is kind
of the speed in which you I don't know how
you describe it, but you know, maybe it's a transition
or a little play tape to tape, making sure you

(05:36):
control it well and moving it quickly, all those things.
But it has to do with not necessarily the speed
of how fast you're skating, maybe a dozen certain instances,
but it's just the overall pace basically correct.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Yeah, and that's all said it and that no one
moves can skate faster than the puck. And then we
always say, you know, the quicker we can move pucks,
and you know it always it takes two people to
have good transition. You know, you need a d man
that's looking north and I got the puck in the
ready position, then you gotta have a guy receiving that
puck that's got his eyes.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
On the passer and his stick available.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
So yeah, we're just trying to get that puck moving
quicker less skating it and just let the puck do
the work. And sometimes it's not a direct pass, and
that's indirect pucks that you got to just put behind
them and we will skate onto. So yeah, that was
something that we're definitely focused on. We had a really
good practice today where we did a lot of that
stuff where we were getting that puck moving and transitioning
up the ice fast, and just had a really good

(06:26):
skilled practice where we were, you know, doing line line,
rushed up quick transition stuff.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Too often over the season, I inquire about your opponent,
but in this instance, you don't have one immediately in
front of you. And so often coaches like to say, hey,
we're worried about us. Well, goodness, I don't know if
there's a better time basically to be worried about oneself,
and that actually is in play, right.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Yeah, for sure, you know what we will, you know,
we'll find out on Sunday who we're playing and we'll
make small adjustments or be ready for certain things they
might do. But when we're playing our best game, we're
playing our you know, connected as a five man unit,
and we're on the same page, that's when we think
we're we're most dangerous. So we're going to really kind
of hit hit home on those things with our guys

(07:13):
and making sure that we're kind of having our best
habits and details.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
I don't know if anybody saw it here today everybody,
but we will tell you that North Takota has the
n C eight C Rookie of the Year Cole Reshnie. Huh,
how about that? That is a big one. We we
talk about Colon offul lot because he's come in and
you have to have some humility to be as to

(07:38):
get as much publicity as a young person all throughout
handle it, not be one of those players that's hanging
out cherry picking at blue lines, basically saying look how
good I am every time you see him tracking back
trying to pick up another player, you know, and and
and can I make myself available, find hustibly, find space

(07:58):
to be there for an outlet or whatever?

Speaker 3 (08:00):
I mean?

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Those are the things that that comes so naturally to him,
and I don't know that it does for everybody.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, you know, he plays such a mature game for
a young guy. You know a lot of young players
measure themselves on point production and how many goals they're
scoring or assists they're making. Where you know, Cole's got
a real mature game. He's got a real appreciation for
kind of playing the game the right way, playing a
two hundred foot game, And I think that's a big
part of what. You know, he racked up a lot
of points in Victoria last year, but I think that's

(08:31):
what made him a first round NHL pick, is the
fact that he's got so much substance in so much
good two way game that you know, as a young player,
he's he's kind of extremely mature and kind of wise
beyond his years.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
When we've talked about, you know, some of your defensive
guys throughout the season. We talked about Abram weebs run
in February with all those NCCHC Awards. We've talked a
lot about Jake Levanovic, We've talked about Samolik trying to
measure his his run. I would assume the voice is
in the room. Some of the guys that I just mentioned,
the Livanoviages, the ben Strandan's, the Emoliks, they have got

(09:07):
to have the right messaging, you know, throughout their experience
and basically building up and kind of knowing what's worked
in the past and some of the messages that they've
heard and then incorporated and be genuine. But boy, those
messages from veterans at this time of year can really
go a long way, can't they.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Yeah, no question.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
You know, I think as a coaching staff, you kind
of set the standard and set the culture early. And
we always say, you know, we kind of think by
for sure, by Christmas, we're kind of passing that leadership
over to the players. You know, we spend a limited
amount of time in a day with the guys in
practice and in meetings and stuff. But the guys manage

(09:45):
the room and they're the ones that are around each
other all the time, and they hold each other accountable
and they kind of, you know, enforce the standard. So
that's a huge part of building a good team. Who's
having character guys And that's one of our core course
staples of how we build our team is picking character
people and leaders and selfless guys. And this group group

(10:07):
has embodied that, and those leaders that you spoke of
are definitely the guys that kind of stand up for
the standard.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Here's a different one for you. You really don't look
that much different. I remember playing golf with you in
the nineties, you and Hack fresh out just getting into
your professional careers at Ray Richards Golf Course, and I
mean you literally don't have much look different. You to
have taken care of yourself. But what has changed in
recovery for maybe these guys from the days that you

(10:35):
played and now what they're having to try to do,
because it's not only you know, making sure that they're healing,
but it's overall just recovery so that they're at their
freshest here once the second season starts.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Correct.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Yeah, it has changed a lot.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
That's a good question.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
Yeah, these guys have a lot more knowledge than we had,
I think, but they probably got more disciplined too. I
don't know, you probably went to Burger time too, or
something like that, but yeah, they you know, we're pretty fortunate.
You know, we have quite a few meals at the
rink and those are all healthy choices. So it's I
think it's a little bit easier for them to make
good food choices.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
For sure.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
That we've learned so much over the years about you know,
how you know, sleep and vitamins and hydration, all those
things are important for you. So yeah, these guys are
way ahead I think on their nutritional choices and hydration,
all the stuff that Mark Pulman, John Fitzgerald give these guys.
So I think they're head ahead of us on knowledge

(11:32):
and discipline.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Well, that's the other thing I do you guys like
so many programs now where the type of devices that
kind of give you all the metrics and who we
can go in and see like okay, he's reached this
metric in the docs, can look at all those things
and really dive into the data basically for these guys.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Yeah, for sure, there's there's a huge change in that area.
You know, when the guys come in every morning, they
kind of stand on bear feet and with bears and
there's this sozo machine that they can measure their hydration
of their their cells to know how hydrated they are. Obviously,
you know, they have a device that goes in their
shoulder pads, so everything every movement there make and they

(12:13):
know how much energy they have exerted. And you know,
so Mark and John monitor everything they're doing at the
start of the year, and I think just twice a
year they go in and get their their blood drawns.
They can kind of see, you know, how their diet
is doing, and if they're short on any uh you
know vitres, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
Yeah, minerals and stuff. So yeah, there's a their outstanding.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
Those guys do a great job of kind of knowing
exactly what's going on with their bodies, and they can
let our staff know and say, hey, we got to
back off on these guys, or we got to push
them a little bit more, or whatever it may be.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
So it's really nice as a coach to be able.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
To have those those tools and those metrics to measure
what's going on in their bodies.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
Optimum performance at the right time is so key. And
so your week sets up. You've talked a little bit
about trying to find a window for a little bit
of rest. You've already had an optional day where I know,
these guys that will show up at the rink anyway
because that's just who they are. And then you also
have your time where you got to go and go
and get hard and sharpen yourselves. So how does your

(13:09):
schedule set up going into selection Sunday?

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Yeah, well, we had Sundays always a kind of a
mandate ad NC double, a day off basically, and then
Monday we had optional so some of our guys that
maybe hadn't played as much they went for a little
skate without the coaches. Then we had a good practice today.
We will practice skin tomorrow, probably have Thursday as a
down day, skate Friday Saturday, and then have Sunday off

(13:33):
and then we'll kind of we're ready to go. We'll
skate Monday and then Tuesday we'll practice at home and
get on the bus and hopefully hopefully he had.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
To suit falls and find a destination. But we and
you know, I know a lot of you and d
fans there would be happy to make that I twenty
nine drive. Just trust me. I just made it for
the some of league basketball tournament. It's a pretty easy
drive to navigate. So if that ends up being the destination,
that's great. And the other thing to mention, you guys
will be together watching that show on Sunday. You'll find

(14:01):
a way to have a team get together and sit
back and find out where everybody goes. Correct.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
Yeah, we're gonna we'll get the group together. I think
I'm gonna go recruiting, so I'll probably be gone, but
I'm sure our group will be there watching on Sunday
in the lounge together to see at two o'clock where
we're going and.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
Who we're playing.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Yeah, a lot of different permutations still, certainly a lot
of I know branch Lassman's been, you know, working all
the metrics of it all, and I know you guys
have people working it too. As of right now, warm
a little bit towards two falls, but still things could
happen and we'll see where it all settles. And the main,
the most important thing North Dakota will be on the line.

(14:40):
They will be playing an opponent next week, and that's
what it's all about. You have a chip chair and
a chance, and hey, you just win the first game
and then you figure it out from there.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
Correct.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Yeah, And that's kind of the neat thing that they
switched in the in the regionals, we used always play
kind of Friday Saturday or Saturday, Sunday Sunday or whatever,
where now.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
They have the day off. I think it's you know,
way better. Such a nice.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
You know, you put your whole year on the line,
so to have a day off in between is a
big deal. But like you say, it's something we've been
building for all year. We've had a outstanding year. We're
proud of our guys how much effort they've put in
to prepare for this moment. And you know, we're a
process based group, and you know we had a set
back there the other night, but now we have a
chance to just stick with what we're doing, keep kind

(15:23):
of stacking up good days, and I feel confident our
boys will be ready to perform at their highest level
on Game one.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
Well, you have already put a little bit of extra
silverware in the old trophy case. There's still an opportunity
to go get some more here and it starts next
week and we wish you a great preparation, save travels,
and once again, thank you for joining us all season
long here telling the story of North to good to
hockey in this setting with some great fans that join us.

(15:50):
Appreciate this and good luck the rest of the way.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
Yeah, thanks, Paul.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
I really appreciate the opportunity to be on and be
around these fans, our fans and our people that support
us is kind of what differentiates our program, so we're
super appreciative of it.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Thanks for this all right much, Dane Jackson, everybody head
coach North Dakota Hockey. You know what it's all. The
fund's only just begun in regards to North Dakota Hockey.
I tell you what. We're gonna find out what the
pathway is on Sunday and then the ride and journey
wherever it takes us. We know there's gonna be a
throng of people clad and green wherever North Kota Hockey goes.

(16:25):
It's gonna be a great couple of weeks ahead here
for North Kota Hockey. And they'll continue to get ready
and Sunday we'll find out exactly what the journey entails
for North Kota Hockey. Sunday afternoon, our Hawk talk show
from the five oh six pub will continue. We're gonna
flip it. And there was supposed to be some spring
football practice today, but they had to alter it because

(16:46):
guess what we were coming out of spring break. People
were trying to return home. There's been travel challenges and
all sorts of things. We pushed it, but we still
get Eric Schmid in here to talk to you and
d North Dakota Fighting Hawks football coming up and on
the way, and we'll talk about their spring campaign that's
set now to begin Thursday, I believe, and Coach Schmidt
joins the program next as we'll have more Hawk talk

(17:07):
and you're listing all across the Fighting Hawks radio network
