we'll hear from Sean Kostitch as a special teams in
charge of the Nichols, certainly one of the veteran coaches
on this team. With Sean, thanks to Sandford Health for
being a partner of you and these spring showcase. Sandford Health,

that defense as well, and there's a lot to be
excited about with the defense, Mike, before we hear from
Sean and Paul.

Right now, what's going on now? This looks like what.

What you ran in middle school drills with the one
on ones.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
If it was a good drill in middle school, it's
still a good drill. And basically all it is is
a one on one blocking. You have wide receivers against
defensive backs with a ball carrier, and so it's a
it's a fundamental drill. Get off the block, make the tackle.
Isn't that that not odd?

But isn't that interesting that what you learned in seventh
grade is being used at the Division one level.

Sometimes receivers think they're out there to catch the ball. No,
they're out there to block. Remember did Danny say run
the ball first? You don't run the ball unless you're
wide receivers blocked.

Paul Thanks so much, Jack. With coach Costache, let's talk
a little bit about the specialist as we look around
the roster and what you've been working with and trying
to really emphasize throughout the spring with this group. What's
been the takeaway so far, whether it be placekicking to punting,
to coverage units, to return units. That's a lot to
(02:40):
look at, but how are we doing it?
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Sure is?
Speaker 5 (02:41):
You know, I think the thing that we're probably most
excited about is we're happy to return what is probably
going to be the best, one of the better punters
in the league in Luke Silver now with an excellent
year and still have one year left to be able
to top what he's done. And all along the way,
Sam Klestinsky's pushing him every single day to be better.
And then I think we fully acknowledge that what happened
on last year's field goal team was not good enough
and there's all good competition going there. A competition has

going to continue, and we're just putting them in pressure
situations because that's really the biggest thing that we got
to improve on. It's not what you do in pre
practice when no one's watching, it's what you do when
everybody's watching, and those are the.

Things we have to emphasize.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
You talked about place kicking and who's going to respond
to the pressure moments. Last year you had kind of
a fearless guy on punt return that you'd stick back there,
and you sometimes wonder, oh boy, you know, decision making.
You know you're gonna get lit up a few times,
but you also like what he can do. And then
you also look at your kick return, maybe going to
some new faces, trying to identify a little bit of
some of those guys that have to have their feet
(03:37):
in the fire a little bit and be fearless in
those moments. And there's a lot of guys to identify
right now.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
Sure is you know, I think the thing that was
you know, different is like defensively, when you have a
pretty good year and do some things like we had
more punt return reps than we've had that I can remember.
I think there was eighty total and with that comes
a lot more opportunities for punt return And I don't
think enough can be said about what Zach Lewis did
back there. Yeah, he never made a significant mistake. He
averaged like thirteen a return, you know, which is like
(04:04):
a first down and more every time. So we have
to replace that type of production. And there's a lot
of people that cater to the scheme of holding people
up and making sure they're space down the field. So
we've got to replace a punt returner and then ultimately
kick return There's a lot of good guys to work with.
It just doesn't have experience here at und and that's fine,
So we're casting a wide net.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
The one thing that doesn't get talked about because it's
only noticed if if something happens, and it's long snappers.
So where's the situation there as far as the long
snappers concerned? And you know, how is that role because
it's a really specialized thing. And you know, Northcote has
been fortunate over the years where long snappers have have

thrived and played a number of years and you kind
of grow to rely on it. How about that long
snapper spot.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
I'm shocked most about the fact that I've been here
at twelve seasons now, I've had three long snappers that
I've gone four years, four years, four years, and we're
starting to continue that trend all over again. He will
be here in attendance as a fan but he has
not reported here because he won't get here till June.
And that's Sam Klein, so we're excited to get Sam going.
He was a guy that you had offers from an

opportunities I should say from Northwestern and some max schools,
but he loved the connection that he had here, so
our fans and you realize that we got a good one.
Although he doesn't have the experience yet, there's a lot
of great potential. So today you will see Hunter Callstrom,
you will see Frank Mcinich, and they will be kind
of emergency role, but we're treating it as if they
were going and this was a situation. This is what
(05:31):
it would look like. So it's all part of the deals.
Like you know, I don't want to look great today,
I want to look great on game day, So we
got to make sure we keep wrapping guys and get experience.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Would you describe to the fans either here today or
maybe just listening out there, because obviously the Fritz Pollard
provides a lot, and obviously when it comes to kicking
field goals or place kicking, that allows it with the
goal pulks in. But sometimes I don't know if you
can do full kickoffs, and certainly punting can be a
challenge in this facility. Although it's got a high roof,
(05:59):
Luke is certainly able to clip it. So how do
you go about that during this time of year when
the facility maybe doesn't always lend itself. I mean it
lends itself to everything else. It's the best facility in
the league, But how about that for the specialists in
dealing with and how to organize and best get the
most use out of the facility.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
Yeah, I don't think there's a practice facility too many
places in the country where you can do a full
punt and not hint the ceiling. I mean very few
people have that. So what you can do here is
if you had a four to one hang, which is decent.
I mean that's a type a punt you can have,
but one that you really want to get a hold of.
And that's where those guys got to have a lot
of inner discipline because they go outside during the springtime
when whether it could be good or not so good,
(06:38):
and honestly, like I'm the guy on staff that you know,
unfortunately my teammates go upset. I was like, hey, guys,
can we go outside and you guys get some work
because we've got to make sure we're developing returners and punters.
So yeah, everything in here you can do from a kickstandpoint,
but that is a challenge and that's where I feel
for those guys and just the understanding once you get
to fall camp, whether it's beautiful, we'll be out there above.
(07:00):
You just got to do what you can do with
the circumstances.

Overall, when you look at your position group on the
defensive side of the ball, and you look at your
position group special teams wise, has it been an encouraging
spring when you look at everything in totality.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
It has been.

You know, we have an interesting situation go aham with
Johnny and we're gonna hope for the best, but he's
doing a great job and working. And then Grant ty
Luki played in his true freshman year, which is very
hard to do. So those are the experienced guys at
the nickel position and all around at dB. I mean,
we did such a good job in so many areas,
but there's some faces and people that we have to replace,
and ultimately we're challenging that regard and that's the fun

part of spring ball.

So you know, I love.

Being on the defensive side. I've wanted to get on
this side for a long time. I'm just so thankful
that Coach Schmid gave me this opportunity because I'm enjoying
it a lot.

believe how fast Spring moves through it, especially when you
don't really have many delays, and once North could have
got going, it's been all hands on deck and it's
been a lot of fun to see this program develop
through its second spring under Coach Smid. We appreciate your

about the long snapper. It's funny, Mike and I were
talking about that during the last break.

A breakup here. I get it. It's not a sexy
thing to talk about.

Everybody wants to hear about the quarterbacks and the edge
rushers and that you know, spicy wide receiver in that
big running bag. But the life of a long snapper,
and Paul brought up the Samuel Klein, that's what he did.
He's all stayed here in high school like four years
and that Mike, Yeah, I get it. It's not what
(08:52):
everybody talks about out of the gate, but it is
so necessary because when that position doesn't perform, the system
breaks down.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
Well, how rare is it? Like Sean said to have
three long snappers over his tenure here and they all
come and stay for four years. Those guys were good.
They were borderline NFL potential guys. I mean that good.
And so that's that's a blessing you kind of just
take for granted.

The center poll and the long snapper. These are two things.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Again we don't spend much time, but you notice it
when it's not performance.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
No doubt about it. And I think that was the
one thing I wanted to touch on because too often we
gloss over these things. And you know, this North Dakota
football program, we talk about the defense, we talk about
the offense, special teams. He mentioned Zach Lewis and what
he could do on the returns. I'm curious who's going
to get into these roles. You have to have a

little bit of fearlessness, you have to be a little crazy,
I think, especially being a punt returner. But then you know,
sometimes I guess say that's the sexy roles of getting
the ball to return it on kick return long snapper say,
you're either the hero or the villain basically, unfortunately, and
Northcote has been very fortunate in that role over the years.
(10:09):
Will this youngster be that next guy that comes in.
I know they're very excited about him, but again today
watch the guys who are getting those reps because they
may be called upon as well at some point in time.
But certainly something to look forward to with another youngster
in Sam Klein arriving here on campus this summer.

I've never been to Clorinda, Iowa. I've been to Iowa
a lot. Maybe I have been. I don't know it.

I think maybe it's one of where you blink and
you miss it. Maybe I don't know. It's like a
beautiful point.

And let me say one thing. We don't get to
talk to Sean Costage all that often. I I know
I'm biased, but I know a little bit of football,
just a little. Personally, I think he's the best special
teams coordinator in FCS football. I don't think there's anybody close.
He is tremendous and we are very fortunate he came
in when he did, and he's still here. He doesn't

get enough credit to.

Other coordinators at whatever the level, come talk to coach Costage.

He's an elite group that meets in the off season
that is very small by invitation only group. And I mean,
he's he's as good as it gets. And we're very
very for We were borning a charter plane last year.
We were in the hangar, you know, going through our
little checkpoint whatever, and I was saying with Sean and
I had previously that day, I had seen to Mike's
point that there's an FCS grading coaches system that's out

there in the country. And I saw, oh, cost is
like top two special teams guys in the cut. So
I messed that to he goes, well, well that's nice.

talk to Sean Costage all that often. I I know
I'm biased, but I know a little bit of football,
just a little. Personally, I think he's the best special
teams coordinator in FCS football. I don't think there's anybody close.
He is tremendous and we are very fortunate he came
in when he did, and he's still here. He doesn't

Other coordinators at whatever the level, come talk to coach Costage.

He's an elite group that meets in the off season
that is very small by invitation only group. And I mean,
he's he's as good as it gets. And we're very
very for We were borning a charter plane last year.
We were in the hangar, you know, going through our
little checkpoint whatever, and I was saying with Sean and
I had previously that day, I had seen to Mike's
point that there's an FCS grading coaches system that's out

there in the country. And I saw, oh, cost is
like top two special teams guys in the cut. So
I messed that to he goes, well, well that's nice.
