Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome to Healing Begins. Good morning everyone. My name is
Pastor Gale, and I'm so glad you've chose to join
me today. I have a special treat for you. I
have Louise and Gibson, who is the author of the
new book The twelve Mile. Say hello Louise, Hello Gail.
So this is really off the cuff. I like to
(00:28):
do things off the cuff and Healing Begins, no preparation,
no script, but a special book to talk about and
share with us a little bit about who you are, Louise, Well.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Pastor gil I am a author now, but back in
the day, a high school math teacher, military wife, home educator.
I worked in Christian radio, in gift processing for a while,
and right now a huge project that I'm trying trying
to finish, the twelfth Mile.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
When hard becomes harder.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Still, wow, that sounds really interesting now. The minute I
heard the title the twelfth Mile, I thought, for sure,
she's got to be a runner? Are you a runner?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I am now, but that is not the way my
life started, for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
So tell me about how you got into running. Why
the twelfth Mile? What is your book all about?
Speaker 2 (01:24):
My book is about God, but My book is also
about mental health, mental disorder, and the connection between that
faith and how an endurance sport spoke into that. God
used running, called me the most unlikely person, the last
one pick growing up to run for him, and what
(01:47):
he taught me through endurance sport prepared me to be
the caregiver that my daughter would need.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Well, that sounds like a lot of inf I bet
that's going to help a lot of people, right, and
probably one of the reasons you decided to put the
book out.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
My number one goal is to help one parent.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Well, share a little bit more about the twelfth mile.
Why the twelfth mile, mile number twelve.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Well, mile number twelve can be this mental place where
things don't look quite exactly the way they actually are. Actually,
I ran the River Bank Run in Grand Rapids, and
that is a fifteen and a half mile course, and
(02:34):
I had a paces goal and I can maintain that
pace beautifully until I seem to bonk at mile twelve.
And it wasn't until years later when I actually volunteered.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
In the race.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
I laughed.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
I looked at the twelfth mile.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
I was an aid at the twelve mile, and the
course is completely flat.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
At that point.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
I thought that was where my problem began, because that
is when I literally let.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
It come apart.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
But it has such a huge spiritual implication. I felt
so empowered by that and God's truth speaking into the
fact that when we go through something hard and when
your kid is sick, that's hard, but when your kid
is getting sicker, that becomes what I termed the harder still.
And we were at a place where the harder still
(03:22):
became so hard, but I didn't even realize that the light.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Was about to dawn.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
But when we're in this place where something becomes harder still,
a lot of times we've already fought much of the
good fight, but it's the mental battle to keep going.
And God's message to me for fifteen years has been, Louise,
I am here, look up, and.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
We'll take the next step together.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
So my journey, the twelve mile when Haart becomes harder
Still is a fifteen year memoir journey.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
But it's about God.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
It's about how could I help you with our experiences
through psychiatric medicine, And what does running have to do
to speak into things of faith? Taking the next step,
the power of our thoughts, the beauty of resilience and
the value of perseverance, all those things.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Well, Louisiana, I was thinking about the twelve mile because
I was a runner for a long time, and I
can tell you there's a certain point, especially if you're
training for a marathon, where your body kind of hits
the wall and you got to push through the pain
to get to the next level. So it wasn't about
the steepness of the course, or it was about where
(04:44):
you were at in the course and what your body
was saying to you when you're running. During that time,
I never ran a marathon. I think the most I've
ever ran was ten miles, so I didn't make it
to twelve and I used to concentrate on five k's
and ten k runs. But the twelve mind out, to me,
is about when you hit that certain point and you
want to quit.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Absolutely, right, is absolutely that is what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
It's the mental struggle of having the perseverance to keep
going when you actually have the stuff in your body.
It's your head and fighting like as it were, the
battlefield of the mind.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
I mean, being able to think of good thoughts.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
God's word is a huge, huge on the spiritual realm.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
He in the in the running, in the race of
our life is looking up to him. He is the
source of.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
All truth, amman, that's so true. Can so share with
us a little bit how you made it through? How
did you get through some of those times of what
was going on back then?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Philippians four eight. Right, whatever is true, whatever is noble,
whatever's praiseworthy, God says with the apostle, Paul, think about
those things. I was running a ten mile race in
South Carolina, and is a perfect example of this. I
had Actually I had a running coach that year, and
(06:04):
I was in South Carolina and I was running this race.
I was running faster, faster than my coach even wanted
me to run. I was down to the last two miles,
and I had this thought, Wow, I'm running faster than
I thought I would run today.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Oh maybe I should speed up.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Oh wait a minute, No, if I speed up, I
could get nauseated. Oh if I speed up, then maybe
I could trip if I speed up. And then immediately,
because I had had several years of running under my belt,
I felt this kind of check in my spirit. Wait
a minute, you respect your thoughts, but is there any
reason that I should be thinking these fearful thoughts.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
So it stopped me right in the minute.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Wait a minute, this is a really good day, a
good day. Is there any reason why I should pay
attention to this? No, there was no reason that I
should pay attention to this. It was fear for good.
It's not given as a spirit of fear, but of love,
power and a sound mind. Well, I decided to use
my sound mind.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
In the last two miles. I sped up. And it's
not always easy overcoming fear. It's not.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
And the only thing that has helped me, whether it's
in the racecourse of my life or actually on a
race course, is look up to him.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Now, weren't you going through something in your family too
during this time that was hard to deal with.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
And suff Yes, yes, And that's really the original idea
of the twelve mile. What do you do when haart
becomes harder still? And my daughter was sick and nothing
that medical protocols were trying to do were making her better,
and she was getting sicker, and she was in several hospitals,
residential care centers. Nothing olped and it does something new apparent.
(07:57):
I mean, fifteen years is a long time to watch
your kids sick and nothing of medical therapy is were
helping her. She was treatment resistant and so I learned
a lot on that road. I actually ended up getting
ill and my treatment for my illness paralleled hers.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Now mine was epilepsy.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
But it turns out through metabolic work that is being
done today that actually epilepsy on the cellular level and
your brain is not that much different than bipolar in
many cases as far as healing the brain. So that's
a big discussion and I talk about that. But yes,
to answer your question, the twelve Mile is about the
(08:40):
journey through mental.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Illness, but not even mental illness.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
What has happens when you have a family member, any
family member, and it requires chronic care. What's important to
remember through that? And I share some of my mistakes,
I share a humor, I share some things that I
learned along the way, and again my goal is to
help one parent.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Well, how would people find your book?
Speaker 3 (09:04):
It should come.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Out in the first quarter of twenty twenty six. They
can find on Amazon. My publisher is Redemption Press out
of Washington State, so you can order it through Redemption
Press as well. But I think a lot of people
just are more comfortable probably with Amazon, So that is
fine as.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Well, and give them your name again how they're going
to find it.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
Louise Ann Gibson No en the end.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Okay, perfect though, that's great. I think it's great because
people need to know somebody else has went through something
and has made it through to the other side, and
then how did they make it through? You know, because
when you're going through something, especially when it's your own child,
it's very emotional, very hard, and it does become harder still.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Right absolutely, and it's it is a road far from
seldom travel. There are seventy five million people in our
country alone that are struggling with some garden variety anxiety
all the way through things like schizophrenia more serious illness
is my polar and I think we need more discussion
(10:11):
about it. It's happening, but I don't like to join
the discussion.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
I noticed you with and you listen to my podcast?
I did. I did for those that are listening right now.
We have a podcast channel called Healing Begins. You can
find it on Spotify, Google, Amazon, anywhere you get your podcasts,
and the podcast channel totally focuses on encouragement, faith and healing,
(10:37):
and so if you're hearing this on the radio, then
you can go back later and find it on on
Healing Begins on anywhere you get your podcasts. So just
put in Healing Begins spiritual care. This is a big need.
I noticed. I noticed even on the podcast channel when
we have a subthing on anxiety that is really listened to. Yeah,
(11:01):
so right now there's a great need for anything that
helps with anxiety and stress. Now, I want to say
this about running. I know this to be true that
it helps with anxiety and.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Stress absolutely absolutely as a metabolic intervention, as well as
good sleep. That sounds simple, but sleep is amazing.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Sleep is huge. If you can't sleep, you're in trouble.
You know. I know I've started thinking about running again.
I've lost about thirty five pounds. I think I'm at
to wait now where I could actually go out and start.
My daughter used to say, Dad, you're not running, your shuffling.
You're going slow. But what I say is I'm keeping
it moving, is what I'm doing. And so any other
(11:46):
thoughts or ideas you want to get people if they're
struggling with stress and anxiety, Louise, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
I think there are many.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
More people that are professionals that are speaking about the
value of natural interventions. Isn't that medication can't come to
the table. It certainly can. But what's exciting is some
of the metabolic interventions.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Our diet, what we eat and how.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
We eat is really important. And actually that is the
healing that I experienced when I went on a pretty
aggressive two year therapy with medical ketogenic therapy.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
That was the thing that helped me.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
But I think there's more conversation that is happening with
limiting sugar, having.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Whole foods, those kinds of thing.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
People are recovering more of their health by strength training,
by walking, by running, by sleeping. There are so many
things that we can do even naturally before we get
to the medical or as a part of the medical protocol.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
And I do talk about that, you know.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
So anyway, Yeah, I even lost thirty five pounds, and
I did it by eliminate sugar, eliminating bread, focusing on protein,
fruits and vegetables and water or water, and and I
try to walk and I've lost like, I've lost like
thirty five pounds without exercising, and it does feel a
lot better. But there's a lot of people out there
(13:16):
in the world today. This is one of the things
I know that are going through crisis. I know recently
I was up at two big medical centers having prayer
with people that were going to extreme I call them,
there are crisis and then there are extreme crises. And
these two happen to be extreme crisis. And they were
so grateful for prayer. But what I wanted to ask
(13:38):
you is what is your favorite scripture?
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Oh? My goodness, I know the Bible is full of them, yes,
but what's your favorite one? I would have to say
it's Hebrews twelve one and two. Therefore, since we are
surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, I'm probably
not going to get work for Let us throw off
sin and everything that entangles and run with perseverance the
(14:02):
race marked out for us. And since we have a father,
a heavenly abba that says he will never leave us
or forsakes, no matter how hard or how easy, how joyful,
or how difficult our journey, God is running with us
in our next best step, even when the heart becomes
harder still. And you'll find that often the twelfth mile
(14:24):
is our place of protection, and He is there, and
he is helping.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
You know that scripture also goes on to say who
for the joy before him endured the cross, And for me,
the twelfth mile is enduring the cross. It's going through
something that's very difficult, very hard, but with the Lord's help,
we can do it. You want to know what my
scripture is? What is it? Joshua one nine, Be strong
(14:50):
and courageous, for you will cause these people to inherit
the land. Meditate on the book of the Law day
and night so that you can be careful to do
everything written therein heaven. I commanded you be strong and courageous.
So for me, if you're going to endure the twelfth mile,
if you're gonna it's getting harder and harder still, you're
(15:11):
gonna have to be courageous. That's why God told Joshua
to be strong and courageous, because he knew he was
facing the Jordan River at flood stage and he was
going to have to have faith to get to see
those waters parted, to get through to the other side.
And so you know, to me, the would you say
that the twelfth mile is about facing unbelievable, insurmountable odds
(15:36):
that you don't know how you're gonna.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Get through, yes, But interestingly enough, when you look back
on the twelfth mile, actually, in our more most dangerous situations,
God had in place in that moment where we felt
like all was lost, he had people coming around us
to carry us through. And it was kind of like
(15:59):
on the racecourse. I thought the twelve mile was the
hardest part of the race.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
It wasn't. It was where my mental battle was the hardest.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
And when I look back on the most difficult parts
of caring and chronic care for our daughter, the parts
that were the most difficult were the times that we
had well like the Footprints poem, where God was literally
carrying us and he loves you so much all the time,
(16:27):
and when you do not think again, I think maybe
this is the third time I've said it. What fifteen
years has taught me? Look up to him? Lord, I
have nothing here, but I know that you have everything
I need and help me take my next best step.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
You know. I love what David said in samone thirty
nine that there was nowhere that he could go where
the presence of God was not. So I said, wherever
I'm at, Lord, I know you're there with me. Whether
we feel it or not. We know he's there because
he says he's there, and he said, I'll never leave you,
nor will I forsake you. So so yeah, so once again,
can you tell them how to find your book?
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
So it should be out on the first quarter again
January through March, somewhere in there of twenty twenty six,
and it will be appearing on Adminison platform and as
well as at the publisher Redemption Press. You can look
them up online as well.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
And it's called The Twelfth Mile by Louise and Gibson,
so you're going to want to pick that up. It
should be an exciting read. Congratulations on your first book.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
I bet that took a lot of work. It's a
lot of words, you know that. Yeah. Yeah, I'm working
on book seven right now. Can you believe it?
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Congratulations?
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Oh? Perfect number?
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Right?
Speaker 1 (17:44):
I don't know. Well, anyways, any other thoughts before we
go into prayer about the twelve Mile that you would
like to communicate to those that are listening.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
Yes, you remember when Peter was walking on the water
and he wanted so much to walk towards Jesus, and
when he got distracted by the things that look so frightening,
just remembering that God is always making all things new,
and like Peter, we sink when we have all the
things frightening us. If we fix our eyes on Jesus,
(18:19):
the author and perfector of our faith, he is the
one that leads us through no matter what might be
distracting you.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Look up to him.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Amen, you want to pray for people right now that
are struggling, that are listening.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Absolutely, Father, God, I thank you for this opportunity to
share a bit of my journey, and I pray Father
for anyone who might be in the place of either
illness or caring for a family member and they're just
exhausted by it. Lord, you are the place of rest,
and you provide rest. Help whoever is listening who needs
(18:57):
a reminder from you right now that you see them
right where they are, and that you provide the perseverance.
You provide the strength that apart from you, Lord, we
can do nothing. Encourage them right where they are and
help them with their next best step. Help them to
look up.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
To you because you have what they need. Father.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Thank you Father for loving us. Thank you for your
son Jesus who came to teach us about you. Lord,
and I pray for those that especially need a word
of encouragement today, that they would reach out to the
community and the people around them, but Lord, that they
would just open a bit of your word and just
read a little bit to know that you have them
(19:40):
in the harder still and you have a plan for
their next best step. Thank you for loving us, thank
you for saying you'll never leave us or forsake us.
And Jesus' matchless name, I pray.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Amen, Lord, I thank you that you said in your
word that you would not leave us as orphans, that
you would give us the cowc the comforter called the
Holy Spirit, who had come from the Father, who would
be with us forever. And I thank you Lord that
the word for the Holy Spirit and the Greek is pericle,
one who comes alongside one who is my helper. And
(20:14):
I pray right now in the name of Jesus, that
for those that are hurting, those that are suffering under
the sound of our voices right now, that the Holy
Spirit would go and comfort each one. I also pray that,
because the Bible says that Hebrews one fourteen that angels
are ministering spirit, send forth to minister to those who
shall be heirs of salvation, that according to your word,
(20:37):
the angels would be commissioned to go forth and to
start ministering to those who are Maybe you're writing and
maybe they're in their car right now, or maybe they're
setting on their bed at home. I don't know where
they're at. But Lord, I pray that you administer peace.
I pray that you administer strength. I pray that you
administer hope. And I pray for those that are tormented,
(20:59):
that you would put peace in their mind, and for
those that are suffering in their body. We release healing
according to the scripture that says that when you send
forth your word, you also send the power to perform it.
So we know you are Jehovah Rafe our healer, You're
Jehovah Jirah, our provider, You're a Jehovah Rohi, a shepherd,
(21:21):
and you're Jehovah Shama, the God who is near. So
I pray right now that people would know that you
are near them, even though they might think they're not worthy,
or maybe God doesn't care about me. Yes, he cares
about you. Lord. I'm reminded of that old hymn my
Grandma taught me. Oh, yes, he cares. I know he cares.
(21:44):
His heart is touched with my plea. I thank you
Lord that you are near those that are listening right now,
and you desire to help them, minister to them and
give them your peace. And I pray for those that
are listening that are not right with you, Lord, that
they would just say, Jesus, I open my heart to you.
(22:04):
I asked you to come in, forgive me of my
sins and be my savior in the name of Jesus. Amen. Well,
we have a couple more minutes left. Do you have
any thoughts that you'd like to give as we're sitting
here talking about the twelve mile.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Always there's a possibility of a better day. God has
a plan. He uses everything Romans eight twenty eight. For
I know he will take everything. All things are worked
together for the good for those who love them and
called up according to their purpose.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
And this life is kind of like running a marathon.
There's going to be hard miles, there's going to be easy. Man.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Been even in the hard miles, they are not without purpose,
and they enable you to share your story because there's
going to be somebody who's going to need to know
what you learned in your twelve mile.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
I want to end with the words of Paul. I
fought the good fight. I've ran a good race, and
I'm ready to meet Jesus. And Paul said, for me
to live as Christ is to die is gain. And
so if you're out there and you want to give up,
one of the things I like about running I got
about sixty seconds left is that last quarter mile people
(23:16):
lining the race, clapping and cheering you on. I want
you to know you're not alone. There are people clapping you.
There are people clapping for you and cheering you on,
whether you can see them or not. May the Lord
bless you, May the Lord keep you. May the Lord
cause his face to shine upon you. May he give
(23:37):
you his grace, and may you know that He's with
you in the race until one day you will see
his face. May God richly bless you. From myself and Louisiane.
God bless you, God bless have a good morning. Are
