All my stuff in my car and everything.

you know. And I did. And then a few days
ago I started feeling a little better. And then I
think I got sick again or something, you know, but
not contagious. I checked. I think it's like a like
a sinus.

There's something going on.

But I'm hopped up on my day quil And there's
only so long you can sit at home and.

Sort of just stare at the TV. Right, how to
get out, John? I had to get out and be
with the people.

Well, it is good to be with you, Annie Haburn
hanging out with us again. You don't if you don't
have to go the full ninety minutes. It's like it's
like a picture that the elbows kind of bother them.
But we need a couple innings from you. Whatever you're
able to provide, we appreciate it.

Okay.

If the catcher comes out and he's like, ah, you
look like you're losing a notch or two on that velocity, right, Yeah, you're.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Ramping up for spring training. Yeah, it's exactly right. Well,
she's ramping up for the season, which gets underway in
a week. I can't believe it, which is insane. I mean,
now we were in Peoria. What is that like? I mean,
you've gone so often over the years.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
Okay, can we just discuss how ridiculous spring training.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Is just the amount of time.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
All right. I love spring training and if you get
out there, it's so fun and I think it's so
fun for the fans, but it's ridiculous, and especially when
you go out there in mid March. So the first
few weeks there's always something going on, right, Like there's
they're doing photo days, there's a ton of media coming
in and out, and everybody's just sort of riding the
high and being back in camp.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
But then you get there like mid March where.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
Guys are have left for the WBC, and it's it's
just groundhog day. I mean, it's very uneventful. You're just
watching the same drills, kind of watching the same things happen.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
You know, guys are in that middle ground.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
I've already been here a few weeks, but there's still
a few weeks left to go, so it just sort
of this.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
Like holding pattern.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
But watching the games too, it just reminded me like
there is nothing, very little that any of you should
take from spring training games. Yes, and so that was
kind of like the takeaway. It always reminds me of that.
But it was great to be out there, you know,
Craig Stammon, it was fun to see him in his element.
Met a ton of the new coaches, young coaching staff,

(04:35):
but they also have some veteran guys on there and
guys that have a ton of experience as well, and
met you know, most of the new players. Got to
talk to them, which I'm sure we'll get to. But
they're running it a little bit different than past camps.
They're kind of focused more on individual work. They'll get
together for group work, but less time of it. So

(04:55):
you know, before when you might go out there, you'd
see the whole team out on the field for quite
a while and kind of standing around right and you're
getting a little bit of work here, you get a
little bit of work there, but then everybody's sort of
standing around. Less of that this year, so more focused
on individual work and really getting to the nitty gritty
of what you need to work on, and then coming
together for team stuff, you know, beyond that just for

(05:16):
kind of a shorter amount of time. And that was
brought on when COVID happened and Craig Stammon really liked
the way that the camps ran for that, like abbreviated
spring training before that COVID year.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
That makes sense. I want to ask you about Craig Salmon.
We'll get to Mason Miller and his availability slash unavailability.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
Yes, the Baudrey is killing the American vibe.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
I mean there's a lot of interesting angles coming out
of last night with the US losing to Venezuela. I mean,
is it solely because Mason Miller didn't appear. We'll get
into it. I like to ask you before we get
into that. No, of course, it's not solely because of them.
Before you get into that, because you've covered Craig sam
as a player rightly, and now you're seeing him in
his first foray as a manager. It's funny, is it.
I was going to say it's athing unique for you.

I mean being in a clubhouse with players, yeah, and
then being in clubhouses with managers and coaches. It's a
completely different beast. And now you've seen both from Craig
Salmon over the last couple of years.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
Yeah, I'm glad you bring it up because it's funny
of a few of the media people we're talking about
how it's almost like you're seeing someone It's I hesitate
to say this because he's doing such a good job,
but like it's almost like a character, you know, like
you're like, like, wait a second, You're not supposed to
be in this role, right, And he really has done
well with Camp so far. He's got a really good

vibe to him. Obviously been great with the media, so
you know, heats off to him on that. Of course
we care about that, but in terms of the players,
like you can really see where the players also are just.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Enjoying him, just kind of enjoying. He's got a dry
sense of humor. He's pretty sarcastic. He'll throw in some
funny stuff every once in a while.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
Now again, as we talk about is any of that
going to translate to wins? Does it mean that they're
gonna have a ninety win season? Like, no, you know,
we don't know, right. But in terms of just the
camp having a good feel to it, I always kind
of hesitate to talk about that too, because there hasn't
been many camps I've been to that don't have a
good feel, you know, and players talk about their coach
lovingly or their manager lovingly. But just from my position,

(07:07):
like you said, of seeing him as a player and
now seeing him as a manager, it's nice, Like it's
almost like you it's I feel like it's like when
you see like a kid graduate and do something else, right, Yeah, exactly,
like hey, hey, good job. Hey you know you answered
that question really.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Well, like right, or like an old friend and a
new like, oh I haven't seen you. Oh you're now
in LA I remember when you were in. It's just
a little different. But it's still the same friend, but
something different.

Speaker 4 (07:30):
And he looks like a player out there.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
I mean he's a young man, he's not old.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
You see him out there and he looks like a player.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
But you know, there was one time they were doing
infield drills and he was doing PFPS actually, and he
was very vocal about like, you know, I don't want
the pictures throwing this way. I want the pictures throwing
this way. They're very vocal about certain you know, letting
go of the ball here, blah blah blah, that sort
of thing, and he would get in there with their
infield coach, Ryan Goens and kind of, you know, they'd

have a little back and forth about what was the
better way. And yeah, so I think in ways like
that he hasn't been able to he hasn't been afraid
to kind of speak his mind and say, well, I
can speak from my experience, and you know, he's open
to a different way of doing it, but just kind
of lending that input, I guess to the rest of
the team.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
All Right, So Annie Halburn and studio, let's transition the
last night. I mean, you know, the semi final game
I think at over seven million viewers is the US
and the Dominic and you got Tatisa Machado locally in
the US, so all this interest and then the last
night it's the culmination. So you're either going to win
this thing or you're not. And it turns out to
be a great game, Yes, right, I mean Ryce Harper
has this moment and in that moment, you're like, they're
going to win this game.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
I thought USA would win.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
After that, he too. And then we get to Mason Miller, obviously,
who has been you know, so good for Team USA,
but his availability was coming into question over the last
twenty four forty eight hours off appearing in the semi final,
and we come to find out. I guess Mark Thorros
has said, well, in a safe spot, we would have
used him. But of course, once the game was tied,
there was no safe spot with the US being the

home team. Now, I guess they could have taken ad
in the eighth, he could have appeared in the night.
They didn't take that through two leads, so I guess
he never would have appeared again in the game. What's
just your reaction to how this all plays out with
Mason Miller not appearing in the US losing by a run.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
I think that I'm sure Mason wanted to appear, no doubt,
Like you know, he was like you you could tell
that he really liked being in this tournament, and why
wouldn't he and he liked the whole you know, being
around so many great players and being part of this.
I think he wanted to go out there. I don't
know what those conversations were. I mean, it sounds like
the conversation was only if the team has a lead

right now.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
Did they go through.

Speaker 5 (09:35):
Every other scenario or did they inns right exactly?

Speaker 4 (09:39):
You know, That's what I don't know. You know, I
didn't think it was that big of a deal. I
didn't think of it.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
It was as big of a deal as them not hitting.
The offense only had three hits the type of game,
you know, so so to me, that was kind of
where I felt like the game was lost, more so
on the offensive side.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
But I saw did you see what shake?

And wrote? No?

Okay, No, Well was.

It specifically about Miller?

Padres had agreed Miller would only be used to protect
the lead. Once the game entered the ninth Miller would
not be able to protect the lead since the US
was the home team.

Dourosa nonetheless declined to use Miller, as you said. Okay,
So then Bill says, this is not in Durosa, But
that is nonsense. If a closer cannot be used three
times in five days with another week to ease into
the regular season by throwing bullpens or in structured B
games or taking a few days off or whatever, then
he should stay home.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
Do you do you feel that way?

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Here's here's my one, here's my nock. We went into
this a ton yesterday and Okay, where my issue with
the WBC is all these like limitations in general exactly
because when you're in like the Olympic games, like hockey
US Canada, they're not gonna say, well, this player can
play eight shifts or like I mean, it's hard because
it's like you're either going to have a Bowl which

is just gimmicky and we don't even do anymore, or
you gonna treat it like it's the World Series or
the Super Bowl or you know, the NHL Stanley Cup
playoffs or the Olympics. I feel like when you get
in the middle and baseball is unique like that because
you know, guys are getting ramped up, so you can't
throw one hundred and forty pitches even if someone's been great,
so they got pitching restrictions. It's even going back to

(11:21):
what Mark de Rossis said before they played Italy when
they he thought they were three to the quarter finals,
Like I'm gonna get guys off their feet. They played
two games or three games. There's just baseball has like
all of these unwrinted rules, and then you're adding on
unwritten rules from the organizations and then trying to put
together this like championship Tournament's like you can't do all things.
We either treat it like it's a world series on
the field or you don't. I feel like they're trying

(11:42):
to figure out what it is. And that's problematic.

Speaker 5 (11:44):
Because Mason Miller. You're right, Mason Miller wasn't the only
one with those way, you know, And I felt like, okay, look,
could Mason a pitch? Of course you would have you
had a day off in between. I mean, it didn't
seem that out of norm something that as you know,
the season starts next week.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
He ramped up early. He talked about that he was
ready to go.

Speaker 5 (12:06):
But on the organization side, you can see where the
pod is right or like this is our closer and
we need to make sure what if something happens, right
and we want to make sure that he's good to go.
But yeah, I agree with you as like, in general,
how do you have this tournament that is supposed to
be so defining now and three years baseball to be

(12:28):
what it is, bigger and bigger and bigger for fans.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
But then you're right.

Speaker 5 (12:32):
Even Craig Stammon mentioned the other day that there's so
many restrictions coming into Durosa, you know, And I'm sure
that's for every manager right that we don't know about
that are he has to juggle so much of this
back and forth from the team.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
So yeah, I mean, so it's like credit Venezuela. It's
not and I said this yesterday, it's not to diminish
any team's accomplishment if the US took advantage of some
type of restriction for Venezuela. I just think the whole thing,
the fan fair is so great and the viewership is
so remarkable, Yet we're not treating it like it's even
a regular season series. I mean, Mason Miller with a

day off against the Cubs on April ninth would probably
not be down he is against Venezuela in the championship
game exactly.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
The other thing that gets me about the WBC because
I did get into it more than I thought I
would and credit they should be very happy that they
had Bernano Tattoos Junior on that Dominican team too, because
you see what a different team made, just the content
machine and along with the rest of the players on
that team.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
But Italy, like, there were so many great.

Speaker 5 (13:33):
Storylines, so so much fun I think for fans, and
I know I had so much fun watching it and
getting into it.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
But when do you ever see a one game never final.
I mean that's also where I feel like they kind
of need to fix that up.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
And the joke today on social media is well Durosa
is saving Miller for Game two. Of course there is
no Game two. But to your point, it's like in
a regular season, the Time have lost five of six
to the Pirates before and like played for a World Series, right, thrilling.

Speaker 5 (14:04):
In one on one hand is but then on the
other hand, it's like this.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
Isn't really real.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
It's not very on baseball like, but they're trying to again,
it has some pros and cons, but again it probably
still needs refining moving forward as well. I want to
get back to the padres on the other side of
Joe Musgrove because we were just in Peoria he hasn't
been throwing. He is likely now almost a formality start
of the year. On the IL, we're gonna get Anny's

So I caught up with Joe Musgrove before the news
came down that he was taking a pause, and then
before I was already you know, coming back to San
Diego when the news came down that he was going
to start the injured list right or likely going to
start the injured list. But we had a really good
conversation about how, you know, sometimes and this I'll speak
for myself, I think, hey, you have the surgery, and

your arm's gonna come back, and it's going to feel
like it used to feel, just you know better, not
maybe not as much pain or whatever.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
That is not the case. And you probably know this.

Speaker 5 (15:57):
He's he's really rebuilding his arm. I mean, it's it's
it's coming back. It doesn't feel the way it used
to feel. His cues that he used to use for
his body that help him with the mechanics of his
pitch are all messed up. It's interesting, and he was
talking about that to me, just about how he has
to rebuild the cues. He has to rebuild, like the
body mechanics because his arm there are certain things that

(16:18):
his arm can't do now that it could do before.
It feels discomfort in this area where it didn't used
to do before. And then on top of that, you're
still healing. I'm like still rehabbing, so you don't it's
still changing even you know what I mean. So he
was really upfront about it. And I always appreciate Joe's honesty.
He's always so wonderfully honest and you can learn a
lot from that. But the fact that like this is

(16:39):
not like, hey, I had surgery and now it's just
a matter of like it's good to go, and now
I just build back up and I'm.

Speaker 4 (16:46):
The same guy.

Speaker 5 (16:47):
Like he might never be the same guy, you know,
and he he might get some of that back, he
might be more dominant, less dominant. We've seen on how
all this has gone with Walker Buller as an example,
and I know yet too, but still like you just
don't know.

Speaker 4 (16:59):
How you're really going to come back from it.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
So as I was driving home, I was thinking about
how this was my fault. Where the all season, all
off season I talked about King paveda Muscrove, Yeah, as the.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
Three sounds good on paper, right right, yeah.

Speaker 4 (17:12):
And I thought, man, this is so unfair to Joe Muskrove.

Speaker 5 (17:15):
Like, and not that he can do it, and not
that he can't be dominant, but I had to get
out of my mind that he was one of those
three and if he becomes one of those three, amazing,
and I'm sure he will be again in his career. Again,
this is like, not to disrespect Joe Muscow. We all
know how he can pitch and how good he can be.
It's just he's working through a lot still, you know,

(17:35):
and there's still a lot that he's got to figure out,
and there's gonna be more stops and starts and everything
like that. So it just kind of reminded me that
their pitching is a little bit vulnerable.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
Yeah, I mean no, it's one hundred percent accurate. I
feel the exact same way because again it's like the
off season story is like look on paper, you're like, well,
you take it to the field. Even Michael King, he
missed a lot of time. Is it realistic for him
to look like he looked in twenty twenty four now
in twenty twenty six? Do your point on an elbow?
I feel like with a player like if Jay Cronworth
gets hit on the hand and breaks his you know, pinky, Yeah,

(18:09):
it's he's gonna miss six weeks. Maybe maybe they'll cast it,
maybe he needs to have it put back in place. Whatever.
It's not ideal, but it changes nothing about his hitting.
In by and large, it may take a period of time,
a week or two to feel back comfortable, or really,
anyone that's ever broken a bone, by and large, recovers
from the break. You know it's not ideal, but nobody

(18:30):
thinks about, Oh I broke my arm as a kid,
has no impact on you. Elbow surgery is a different beast,
and the good news is buying large pictures recover from
Tommy John surgery, by and large, incredible. Yeah, it's an
amazing right, especially the first time. Now, is it a guarantee?
Probably not. Is it a guarantee they get to where
they were? Maybe not? And then we know that first
year is where it's like the key with baseball is

(18:51):
you want to be consistent, and I feel like Tommy John.
Guys can't be consistent because your command is an ideal
and your numbers might not look like your numbers, but
you're probably healthy. You're healthy, but you're just not you yet.
And that's my worry. He's going to be out there.
This isn't like, oh, Joe's gonna be shut down his elbows. No, no, no,
He's going to be out there. Just is he going
to look like Joe Muscove in twenty twentye.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
You just nailed it.

Speaker 5 (19:11):
And the consistency is so important, You're right, and they
look for those cues and they look for that consistency.
And then the fact that certain things don't feel the
same to him, so he has discomfort on certain pitches
or certain our movements where before he did it and
now he's got to focus more and maybe on this
pitch and less on this pitch, and you know, shapes
different shapes and how he's gonna throw it and everything.

(19:33):
So getting used to that and then imagine that as
you just said, and then you have a little setback,
and now you've got to build again.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
And go through it again. And so it's not exactly
as you said.

Speaker 5 (19:43):
It's not that he's not going to pitch, and it's
not that he can't be the dominant, excellent Joe Musgrove.

Speaker 4 (19:49):
It's that it might take some time.

Speaker 5 (19:52):
If it's if he comes back earlier than expected, and maybe,
you know, just fewer bumps in the road than we
all thought.

Speaker 4 (19:57):
Then that's kind of cherry on.

Speaker 5 (19:59):
The you know, icing on the cake, right, But I
don't think it's unrealistic now seeing it all and talking
to him and everything to to to think that maybe
it might take him a little longer and it might
have you know, a few more kind of bumps in
the road.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
And then also for him to talk about you know,
he was.

Speaker 5 (20:15):
Honest at FanFest and coming into the season about how
last year he kept talking, he kept saying his arm
is great, rehabs going great, everything's going great. And then
come to find out if FanFest, no, he had a
lot of ups and downs and he just didn't want
to talk about them, you know. And so again I
credit him for the honesty and for being willing to
open up about it.

Speaker 4 (20:35):
And like you said, maybe it won't be.

Speaker 5 (20:38):
As you know, as much of a setback as we
all think, But I just think it's if it is,
it's really not that surprising. I guess what is surprising
is what about the starting rotation now, Like it makes
me think like like and.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
They kindnew this, yeah, I mean they have more information
than you're right, I think to the fan or to
like a media member like oh, they got you a
Muscow back, but organizationally they understand the dynamics of Tommy
John and its impact and what are you going to
get off of it? And then you look at their
off season moves so we can get more into this.
On the other side, they've been very much around the edges,

(21:11):
like they haven't invested heavily in starting pitching. Flyer on Marker, Bueller,
flyer on Marquez. It may all work, but again, without
a healthy Joe Muscrove, what impact will it have on
the rotation? Let's talk more about that. On the other side, also,

I thought you made a really good point that you
can overcome some of this, right, Like, and your offense
might need to step up, or you might need to
do a bullpen day, or they've got these off days
that are scheduled throughout the especially at the beginning of

You've got quite a few.

Off days, right, Yeah, so you can overcome it. But
you're kind of like baking on things to go, right.
You're baking on the starters that you have to go
at least five or six innings, so you don't tax
your bullpen that's going to be needed for the bullpen
day or whatever. You're baking on these fifty to fifty
guys that you mentioned, like Marquez or Sears or Blur
whoever to come through Waldron, right, and uh, and then

you're baking. You need the offense to perform. Like, there's
just a lot going on, right, So I think they
can figure it out. I don't think it's the end
of the world. And maybe we'll be sitting here in
a month or two, like, oh man, we're all so
worried about that starting WHI they've been so dominant, you know,
like last year, I mean last year.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
Was really Paveta and and.

Speaker 2 (26:06):
Basket was heard. Obviously, Muscow was out, darvisher was out. Yeah,
I mean it was Paveta was terrific, right or would
they have been obviously without him? Now? Was he going
to be that exact same guy? Again? He's asking a
lot of Nick Pavetta, what about this? Just like I
brought this up the other day, and I'm like, maybe
it just works itself out where your pitching isn't as good,

but it's still good enough as you're a pet go
and it's a pitcher's yard, and you're not gonna be
the worst pitching staff in baseball. I mean, certainly a
bullpend should be outstanding. So let's say your rotation goes
from good to average, but you're still a good Bullpend.
And let's say your offense goes from well, it wasn't
very good to just better. Right, So all of a sudden, Okay,
you're giving up another quarter of a run per game,
but you're scoring another third of a run per game.

(26:48):
You know, as simple as that, But maybe some of
it is as simple as.

That exactly, Like it's so as you know, it's baseball exactly,
something like that could definitely happen where it's like, okay,
they're just picking each other.

Speaker 4 (26:58):
Up offense, be right exactly. But if not, then.

They're in a little bit of a pickle because yeah,
I mean, you don't really know what you're getting, you know.
I know Bueller has looked better, and he has looked better,
and they've really been working on getting him to be
less of a thrower and more of a picture so
he's not just hurling, and he's he's using his mixed
more and and depending.

Less on his fastball.

He he's a little bit of a wild card in
terms of, uh, just the fit in the in the
with the staff. I think that they're all still kind
of acclimating to him and getting used to that. But
I feel like at this point, you know, you make
that work because you're gonna need him. Probably Marquez had
a better start yesterday, but again, you know, how much.

How much stuck can you really put into It's I
feel like, to John, tell me what you think about this,
but I feel like you got to give it, like
six weeks into the season, which you know, you can't
judge it off like the first or second.

Start this season, and we all do it, you know,
I mean you're judging springs were reactionary kind of business.
But like it's so true. Even with Joel Musgrove, if
he gets back out there, even if everything's like perfect,
he's back out there in the middle of April, Like,
you gotta be reasonable here. If he if he goes
two and two third innings and allows two runs, it's okay,

Like that's not ending the season. Or if he goes
from a six inning outing in which he allows two
runs and the next outing is two innings six runs,
You're gonna have to deal with it. It happens with
pictures that are healthy. It certainly can happen with someone
coming off Tommy John. You're gonna have to ride that
wave a little bit and hopefully they can get through
it with enough wins, like you're unlike the Dodgers, where
they can put starting pitchers on the il or work

(28:38):
with someone over the course of the year, they can
literally like schedule that in. I don't think the Padres
necessarily can do that. So it's thinner margins, but they've
won ninety plus games the last two years, there's reasons
to believe they hopefully can get close.

Speaker 5 (28:50):
Enough exactly exactly, like you know, you have two really
good weeks here or there, just like they did to
start the season last year, right, and it really could
propel you.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
But I think it's going to be interesting, does it?

when I was in the studio maybe a month or
so ago. Is like quantity over quality, Like are you
surprised that they didn't sign maybe another front end starter
or is it just a matter of money, Like they
just didn't feel like they could.

Spend that money at the time.

Maybe it's got to be money. So Lucas Jiulido is
still out there.

Still out there and commanding what like what is the
number for him?

Like people, I'm making this up. Yeah, people have thrown
around the idea of one for low twenties, two for
low thirties, so for a year. Yeah, it feels like
the Padres are dealing with like finding change in their case.

No, you're right, and like they're big.

One was Michael King, Yeah, exact right. They invested in
King and even the King deal, like King is a
twenty five million dollar deal beaus he get opt out
after year one. Now if he stays, it's twenty five
for year two, twenty five for year three, and twenty
five is a big number. But again, quality frontline starting
pitching is going to cost you at least that, and
Lucas Giolito is quality frontline starting pitching. So if King

got twenty five, he's he's in the twenties. Probably there's
a reason he's probably unsigned. To me, to your point,
I'm plaid you brought up. I feel like it solves
a lot. Like you're talking about all this well, if
and if and when and just put him in your rotation.
It seemingly makes everything better. But again, it's not my
twenty three million dollar check to write, and it's their

twenty three million. I mean, it's a lot of money,
probably for a team that's already up at the CBT
threshold is about to be sold. Yeah, I would imagine
the next owner is less concerned about giving Lucas Giolito
a one year deal. You've already got some of these
guys signed for ten.

Well, it's only tying you up for right now.

In comparison to those bigger deals that they have, right,
it's not going to look and like you said, that's

They had to figure out, like we talked about, they
had to budget, they had to figure out, how do
we spread the money as best as we can? And
I think that they look at it like all right,

these guys, will it be enough?

But Ruben will you know, and and Fritzy and all
his whole staff will work to do that, and they could.

got that. That's typically how professional sports work. Like you
go into the season like, oh, everything's great, it's not
all gonna be great or everything's not great. Players emerge, Yeah,
like there's a lot of reason to believe that someone
that isn't at all on a lot of pacers, fans,
radars will put together a good year, you know, like
whether it's a prospect or a veteran or someone in

their lineup or whatever it is, is like somehow it
has a way of working itself out, or to.

Your point of working itself out.

Speaker 5 (31:50):
Sometimes it's like, hey, guy gets you through three or
four starts, and then you move on to the next
guy and he gets you through two or three or
three or four right exactly, and so on and so forth,
and you're able to patch it together until you can
sort of find some better footing, right and working through
with Joe Mascrow will see how they do with that,
because you're right, like he might go through spurts where

things are great, right, and then he might need a
break or he might have a you know, need to
take a step back for a second. So it's gonna
be a little interesting with the starting pitching. I think
if you look at their roster, tell me if you
agree that is their most vulnerable point, I would think like, yeah,
you know, and so it is gonna be a little
interesting to watch how they do it all and I
don't think that they feel one hundred percent great about everything, Like,

despite what they say, I think that they're all still
kind of crossing their fingers a little bit that some
of this is going to work out the way that
they hope as well.

I believe, especially that first time that he was on

And I think that he kind of knows this kind
of do or dial though for him, it does seem
like if the potteris let him go, or he walked

I do think that his personality is a little different,

years Cocker Spaniel. Good dog. Yeah, but it was obsessed
with my wife. Could care less about me. That's what
they say about spaniels. They love one person, not too

And he saw me as like an adversary and he
loved her. But at the end, the doctor was like
his teeth got to go because his teeth are like rotting,
and and that was so expensive. And how about this
to the point that we we did it because my
wife literally would have spent one point nine million dollars
on this dog. Sure, so we spent what it took
to get rid of his teeth thousands of dollars.

this tournament so often over the years that you have
to kind of clear that hurdle. But with games of
Viehus are inta this weekend, that's cool. So I'm going Friday, yeah,
which I'm excited about. And the games of viehas like

Arizona's here, Kansas is, yere John's is here, Utah State
in the Mount West is playing Villanova, so just some
like intriguing like storylines and matchups. So I'm looking forward
to that. But I love this. I love this tournament.

Mean it's just random games. I don't even know Howard
against someone they like won by some dude missed a

point arc tie game, not down. One dude pulls off

it's the jumper. They went by two no way states out. Wow, Yeah,
Texas moves on and those are two more games today.
The interesting thing today, if you followed this Miami, Ohio
story a little bit, I love it. I love it,
I love it. I love the honesty because that's how
I am was some of these things. They were thirty one.

And oh, but they didn't play the toughest, right, They
had a softer schedule.

They lost in their conference tournament they get in, which
I think they were thirty one and oh, like in
anything in life, like, it's hard to discount.

That, you know, you still had to win those games
you couldn't have any clunkers.

Yea, they couldn't have any right, so and they still did.
They still did that.

They're in and they're playing an hour from their campus
in Dayton or maybe closer, and they're playing a team
out of the ACC, SMU whatever. But sm U is
like a seven or eight point favorite, and everyone thinks, well,
SMU is in the ACC, they played this tough schedule,
they're like a seven or eight point favorite. A lot
of people believe, well, SMU is just gonna blow the
doors off. Sure will they? Well, I'm kind of curious, like,
does the thirty one team that played nobody, playing essentially

a home game with that support, can they beat the
team that plays at a power conference?

Speaker 5 (47:31):
That's what makes exactly and all the Cinderella stories you
know as well know, and all the like you said,
the buzzer beaters and the underdogs.

Speaker 4 (47:38):
I always, of course love the underdogs.

Speaker 5 (47:40):
The teams like you you just mentioned that you have
supposedly have no chance or exactly you know.

Speaker 4 (47:45):
Who's your ringer? Like, who's who do you think is
gonna win it all?

Speaker 2 (47:49):
It's hard. So San Diego State played both Michigan and
Arizona to have arguably the top three or four with Duke,
maybe Florida as well. And I thought the most impressive
team's going back away when they played them, but was Michigan.
Michigan was so impressive. Yeah, Arizona was really impressive defensively,
I thought, but I thought Michigan was like more well rounded.
I'm just gonna go with Michigan based on my own

two eyes and what I've seen. They've tripped up a
little bit later in the year. They could have had
a couple of losses. But what's happened with the top
of college basketball is it's kind of run away a
little bit because all the money.

You know, it was already hard enough, right, you know,
it's hard enough.

Now yeah, it's like they've taken it away because you

To like Miami of Ohio. I would imagine do they
even have rev share like Brente, Like, did they even
pay their student athletes this year to go thirty? Oh?
Probably probably in the tens of thousands to you know what,
I mean, which again, how.

Do you I don't really get Yeah, like, how do
you feel a competitive tournament? It's like our WBC conversation,
like how do you really get?

Well? Yeah, like you got like plumbers on team in
against like major leaguers on team USA. But then again
Italy beat they beat to our point.

That's what happens to the exactly. That's the beauty of sports.
You just never see.

It's almost more impressive now if we do see some
of these remarkable upsets, give them more credit because it's
almost more tilted the playing field because of the money.
Did you find anything brent on? Miami of Ohio and
I I'm just curious.

Speaker 3 (49:23):
The school has quite a bit, But that's because the
Cavendar Twins went there.

Speaker 2 (49:28):
Remember the Miami of Ohio. Yeah, then they transferred to
oh so they bounced around. Interesting, but yeah, they they
were like they were the first school that got suspended
for violating nil infractions. Oh like that in twenty twenty three,
they got hit with a five thousand dollars fine, probation
and a three game suspension due to impermissible contact with

the booster. No, you're looking at Miami Miami. They went
to Miami. The Cavendar Twins at the end of their career, Ohio,

Tozzi has this awesome two weeks essentially where looks the party,
smiling ear to ear, performing on field. That didn't go
perfectly obviously in the game that they lost to the US,
But again, we know we're not going to get that
touties for like two hundred games. That's not realistic. But

do you think it's a jumping off point for him?
Could it be beneficial what he just went through heading
into the.

Ear I hope, so, I hope.

So it was fun to watch him and it reminded
me of Fernando Tutis junior of Old Yeah, the guy
that we used to see, the guy that we used
to see who would have fun out there and dance
and be with his teammates and then also had big
moments like he had throughout that tournament.

Speaker 2 (51:05):
I hope. So.

Speaker 5 (51:06):
I mean I look at him and I think that
he knows and he has addressed and he has addressed
it with the media that his emotions.

Speaker 4 (51:13):
Last year got the better of him and that they
have gotten the better of him over his career.

Speaker 5 (51:16):
And he's talked about the pressure that he's felt and
also the expectations from a young age that he's had,
and just the fact that it's hard for him sometimes
when he gets down like that, to fake it, and
that's something you kind of love about him too. I Mean,
I know nobody loves seeing the body language like that,
and I know it can be hard to watch, but
I assure you he cares, like this guy really does

(51:39):
care about baseball and about coming through first team, and
I think it's just been a really hard stretch for
him where obviously the PDS, but then the surgeries and
then just like we talked about with Joe Musgrove, you
wait to become the guy that you used to be,
and you have flashes of it and then you take
ten steps backward, and it's just so frustrating as a
player because you he's not immune to it.

Speaker 4 (52:01):
I think he's done a really good job.

Speaker 5 (52:02):
Of shutting a lot of it off, the talk around him,
and he's grown up a lot, I do think, in
the last few years. But he's not immune to it completely.
And he hears what's being said about him and the
bust and all that, and I think that he he
has expectations on himself to just be a better player.
So I look at him, John and it's like he's
he's done what he can to control what he can control.

Speaker 4 (52:23):
Outside of hitting right. So in terms, I mean, that's
side of results, I guess I should say.

Speaker 5 (52:27):
So he's gotten better in the outfield, he's gold Glover,
Platinum Glover, like he's you know, done everything he can there.
He's gotten better not chasing the baseball, he's gotten better
at base running, taking walks, you know, stealing when he has.

Speaker 4 (52:40):
To, all that, all that good stuff.

Speaker 5 (52:41):
But the next step for him, I think is really
like not getting too low. When you get through those
when you when you get into those slumps, because it's
really not benefiting him.

Speaker 4 (52:50):
It's really just not helping him all that much.

Speaker 2 (52:52):
You know, there are certain athletes that like wear it
more in their sleeves. I feel like, and yeah, he
came up young in the game, obviously, and he has
had a very unique career amongst all athletes, and there's
other athletes that have unique careers. I mean, I don't
think it's it's not like it's just Fernando Tatis Junior
has dealt with heis and lows. But you go from
face of baseball to basically like Scarlett Letard right specifically

(53:15):
in baseball, you can never the national narrative. I didn't
even realize this. We spend so much time. I never
think for the last three years, I don't spend that
much time on Tatis's suspension obviously because he's just whatever.
We've gotten through it. But I think the national narrative
anytime Fernando Tatis Juniors brought up and say, well he
was the player, and then there's the PDS, he's not
the same player, like oh so, like I don't even
think it's a question. I think he's directly tied. I

(53:36):
think his success before PDS suspension and after is directly
tied nationally to that suspension. I think locally people say, no,
he was out, he was trying to work his way back.
Was it even PD Who even knows? But it feels
like he's got to change that narrative with his play,
you know, like if you he's got to get back there.
And by the way, if he does, someone will say

(53:58):
he's back on PDS. Who cares? Will say what if
you don't perform, They'll say you were on PDS right,
And if you do perform, he's back on PDS right.
Forget about that. But he does have to show us
a little more. For me offensively, I think.

Speaker 4 (54:10):
It's a great point. He has to take that next step.

Speaker 5 (54:12):
You see that next step with him where it's like,
when things aren't going perfectly or they're not going your way,
who are you going to be in those moments?

Speaker 4 (54:18):
How are you going to persevere?

Speaker 5 (54:20):
How are you going to get past it and then
be a good teammate to the other guys in the
clubhouse and then also just give yourself a chance right
to go out there and then have a better result.
Because I just read on the Athletic last week they
had a really good article from a sports psychologist about
body language and how much body language does affect not
just yourself, but like affects the rest of your team. Yeah,

(54:41):
exactly so. But the thing about it is is I
think he has like he brings that stuff up, and
he brings up the that he needs to grow up
in some areas, and he brings up so it's not
like you're having to write those narratives around him.

Speaker 4 (54:54):
Like he's addressing it.

Speaker 5 (54:55):
And so in that sense, I think he's realized, like
that is my next step, Like I do need to become,
you know, not.

Speaker 4 (55:03):
I don't ever want him to not be Fernando Tatis.
You and you're like, he should have the fun.

Speaker 5 (55:06):
And he should be you know, do the dancing and
do everything he does, but just in those harder moments
like can you keep yourself a little bit more uh steady,
you know, and can you keep the space around you
a little bit more steady? And then and then and
then come out there and like really fight, you know,
really fight to get back to kind of who you were.
And last year I think that, you know, he he

(55:26):
had flashes of it. Then he got away from a
swing and then he tinkered a lot, and then he
wasn't feeling well, and you know he I remember talking
to him and asking him, why don't you just go
back to the swing that you had when you were
having so much success earlier in the season. And he's
talked about how his body felt so different because of
the injury. You know, he'd been banged up at that
point exactly, so we couldn't get back to those mechanics, right,

(55:48):
So I think, you know, for him again, it's going
to be kind of just like take a der breath, Hey, cool,
like let's get back on track, you know, and and
getting back to that.

Speaker 2 (55:56):
Guy man just to I mean, we all saw him
coming up. I mean, this guy was must watch. You
would get to the TV when he was coming to
the plate. He hasn't necessarily been that player. He's a
brilliant fielder. He's a great player overall. It's not to
say he's not a very very good player, if not
a great player, but he hasn't reached that ceiling or
the threshold that maybe we saw early on or we

(56:18):
expected him to be. I mean, people thought he was
winning MVPs and he got close when he was younger,
but now in the National League was Shohotani. I mean,
you're not sniffing MVPs.

Speaker 5 (56:28):
Do you know what's so hard as a player? You
know this As an athlete. On the one hand, you're like,
I can't let go of that. I can't let go
of I am a superstar. I am going to be
the best in the league. I am going to be
the MVP. Like that is who you were, like you,
it's hard to let go of that. But then you
put so much expectation on that that when you fail, yeah,
when you fall short, you know, you die way too low.

(56:50):
It's like I almost feel like, and I don't know,
does he have to sort of let go of that
and be like, hey, how do I get the best
out of myself now? Even if it doesn't mean, you know,
I'm the best in baseball or I'm the face of
baseball or I'm the MVP, you know, just a little
bit more, get a little bit more than what you
have been getting.

He's an interesting cat, like his whole career, everything about him.
I love Fernando Tatis Junior. I think it's one of
my most I've said this before, one of the most
favorite athletes I've ever watched in any sport is Fernando
Tatzis junior. But there is a portion of me also
that has been frustrated by not There's nothing worse you
can say about a professional athlete than not living up

to your potential. I don't want to say that ten
years from now about Fernando Tazzis junior. We'll continue that

I wonder if they would. That's what I'm curious about,
Like if it was best of seven, are they going
to beat Japan? Are they going to beat Venezuela A?
They're going to beat the Dominican?

that we're in, the Potteri's Clubhouse, there's a million countries

like that, but I think most a lot of clubhouses
are like that.

Think in our culture now, you know, who's gonna be
talking about this in two weeks.

It's gonna be onto the regular season. It's gonna be like,

I don't know. You know, I agree with that, and

more concerned about what happens with like the Padres than

The other thing that I see because I saw did
just see this too, where you know, people were talking
about how it was a different field of the World
Series and it had it was a best field in
the World Series. But then you had Derek Jeter who
was like, well, then you've never played in a World Series.

These kind of different vary viewpoints, which is cool, right,
you know, But at the same time, I still think
you're right, and like it's sort of still trying to
figure out what it is and how big of a
