two cy Young seasons he's allowing five plus runs in general.
And that's not to say you can't chase him early,

are going to find ways to be in games. This

because Nick Castianos didn't play. Now, I do think it's
a fair conversation. Well, Nick Castianos last year with the
Phillies homeward off to Rick Scooble. That alone is a
feat to not have him in there. Okay, mildly surprising,
maybe with the benefit of hindsight nowadays two against another
tough lefty, Nick Castianos is not starting. Ty Frantz is,
I don't know if Castianos is ready yet to field

his position at first base, but it's kind of like, well,
he's here to face tough lefties. He hasn't faced the
lefties as of yet.

Well you thought too, especially with I mean sure, just
the pottery is. From a pr perspective, it sound like
they're spending ten to millions of dollars to bring in
Kyle Tucker or one hundreds of millions of dollars for
some high price free agent. Nick Castianos is a free
agent they brought in who is a big name and
has had some really big moments over his career with
the Phillies. I'm with you, so I'm surprised that at least,

I mean, I guess I don't. I never really got
the whole opening Day. You're gonna give it to certain
guys because it's opening day. You want to give it
to Gavin Sheets yesterday. That's fine, but I am surprised
tonight that he's not in the lineup. That feels odd
at home second night.

Going by day two, it's like you got Louis Campusano
in the lineup, you know exactly then you think you'd
get like Nick Castianos in the lineup. I know catchers
often rotate more often, especially when you had a bad
offensive day before, and not that it's one.

that it's a little surprising to me that he's not playing.

I would say, like today, it's not about I mean,

of days of the Giants. Terrific starting pitcher Paul Skeens.
We know he got beat up but look at his
track record in two years as good as they come.

ten to eleven games of the season. You're seeing four
or five of the game's best. We can't just say, well, well,

they're not gonna do anything on offense against those those pictures,
because those pitchers are really good. You've invested a billion
dollars in your lineup.

I kind of terrible outing. I expect Nick Pavetta to
get back to being Nick Pavetta. But I'm with you

on the bats. It was a little disappointing being at home.
How anemick they were. I get Schooble's unbelievable is unbelievable,
But coming off the WBC, we were talking about this
the other day, I thought that because of the WBC,
you might see the bats for teams be better faster,
because usually pitching the first three weeks of the season

to a month is ahead of major league hitters and
they kind of start getting to it.

and it is true. For that, it is true one

can be a little bit of a drone at times,

end of the year, when we're talking about this team

in August in September and they have a two game
leader or two game deficit, you do kind of go
back to some of these games where you think, like, oh, they.

certainly a lot of games to nitpick just because of
the quantity.

fourteenth three star last year, it really added a lot
of juice to this team.

just feels like with Tiger, it's like, man, this keeps happening,

and we were talking about it on Monday, him on
the tgo and in his professional return to golf, and
everyone's talking the last couple of weeks will he play
in the Masters, And now we're hearing this.

It's just it is sadly agree with you.

It's like if Tiger could just get his life right
because it's like trying to come back, trying to come
back and play golf. It feels like I should be
on the back burner when we're getting stories like this

In the accident, it's just crazy because in two thousand
and nine, before the like that's the moment of time
with the initial scandal, like the when he crashed his car,
but there's the extra marital stuff, and I don't even

that was seventeen years ago, and it feels like there's

big difference, right. I mean, if we actually took that
date and time and looked at his career accomplishments before

stuff and on the you know, athletes who keep coming back.
I mean, it's hard seeing athletes, whether it's golfers or

boxers trying to come back, Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, and

it's it's hard seeing these guys who you know, a
lot of people loved and still love and a door
as kind of shells themselves in them in the ring,
and now we're seeing or in the ring or in
the in the sporting world, and now it feels like
with Tiger is just you know, one thing after another.
It's it's very disappointing. And again glad everyone in the
accident is okay and nobody was armed.

twenty twenty five. So I'm hopeful because I've seen him
at his best, But I honestly don't know what to
expect with Michael King.

in spring training, was not very good in opening day

it does feel like Michael King is a big star

for him because he was kind of the next big
thing with the Patres and for whatever that is, whether
injuries or just kind of odd timing not great play,
hasn't really ascended into that, but he could be. Certainly
has the opportunity in the stuff to be an absolute

the week that bj Davis intends to enter the portal.

then we learned today that Milesburg will in fact intend
to enter the transfer portal when it opens. Mark appreciates
it taking time. Is any of this in this crazy
world of college athletics? Is anything that's played out so
far involving San Diego State been surprising to you or not?

I mean a little bit of surprise with BJ and
the timing announcement and how it came out with his
agency and him not saying anything personally. You know, I
thought that might wait until next week, a little bit early,
but I guess this is a new world where agencies
try to get some of them take the TACKI let's
get somebody's name out there and see if we can
(25:02):
drive the price up and see what the market is.
But with Miles one hundred percent, no see this coming
in a number of ways where it was you know,
him very being seriorty, is very tearful and walking and
participating in a senior night too. When asked him a
couple of times late in the season about his intention
and saying, well, I haven't really decided, that's a pretty
(25:24):
big tip often and you know, when he says things
like I'm going to graduate in May, that's pretty much
telegraphing what's coming.

So a year ago, as you know and some of
our listeners know, he declared for the NBA draft, went
through the combine process before returning to San Diego State.
From the messaging today, it didn't mention what comes next professionally, right,
are you envisioning that he doesn't go through that route
again and goes right into the portal for his final

year in college.
Speaker 9 (25:56):
I think so. And that's the interesting thing to me
now about college sports is these guys are getting paid
so much money that it's more than they could possibly
make unless you're a top maybe ten draft pick in
the NBA. And even in that case, I think some
universities could probably match that. And that's how I don't
whack the college and I al revenue sharing. The market
(26:20):
for football and basketball players has become this is not
their market value. People have to understand this. This is
university is just going into debt and throwing money at
guys with no consequences for their debt. Now that day,
you know that that piper is going to come calling
one day, and it'll probably be pretty soon when the
academics side of the campus says, wait a minute, are
we a university or we are a sports team here?
(26:41):
And they and they put some reins on that. But
right now you're just seeing you know, the market's going
to I mean I saw one thing where the market
was going up thirty five percent from last year already,
and that's just university throwing money at guys, and so
their market value is what they would make in the
NBA or what they would make in the G League,
or what would they make in Europe, which are you know, uh,
(27:02):
sports organizations that are run like a business, and you
know what you take care is what you can pay out,
not college where they're just throwing money as no consequence
or no attention to whether they're actually making money, if
there's any profit here and there, and everyone just losing
money and paying players, and so why wouldn't you just
stay in college?
Speaker 5 (27:22):
Yeah, it is certainly a very unique time, and that's
probably putting it mildly. Mark Zeedler from the UT with
us right now in San Diego Sports seven sixty. So
you wrote about BJ Davis, who, like you said, through
his agency, expressed an interest in entering the portal. But
then you have followed up with BJ in some capacity.
What was the latest or what what did BJ make
you aware of when you when you talk to him.
Speaker 9 (27:44):
I checked put them back and forth and he said
he's still considering staying with Those were his words, and
I expect that he'll be gone, but I think the
door is a jar. And if sandygo state came back
to him, and if he came back to them and
they kind of met in the middle there, Obviously he's
going to take less money to stay than he probably
(28:04):
could get somewhere else. You know, he's a guy that
he admitted last year, he's a little bit of a homebody,
a little bit of a you know, doesn't like to
jump around. His parents are like that, and so I
think there's certainly a sentiment to maybe not jumping into
the unknown. But if the money is so much greater
than I think, he'll do it. But I think that
the door is open slightly. I don't think it's wide open,
(28:27):
but I think it's slightly open. And maybe it's one
of those things where it's it's hard to say goodbye,
and the finality of it he's not quite prepared for yet,
but that will come on April seventh. If he's in
the transfer portal in April seventh, I think the chances
him staying are pretty slim.
Speaker 5 (28:41):
Do you have any additional feel for the remainder of
the roster. Again, it's so fluid, just in the landscape,
like around the country, it's so hard to know. I mean,
nobody's really contracted anywhere you could just get up and
enter the portal try. I think there's another handful of
players obviously that still have eligibility that we're on San
Diego State, whether it's the young guys, Tay Simmons and Harrington,
also young taj To Goreville, Pharaoh Compton, there's Miles Heidi Shoot,
(29:04):
Lacharl Davis sat out last year. But again, any player
could get up and go at their own desire. So
do you have a feel for the remainder of the roster, not.
Speaker 9 (29:14):
One hundred percent. I mean, I think it's fair to
say that Tay Simmons, Latrelle and I think they're very
hopeful with Elsie Pan on the situation with his with
his leg, will come back next year. And that's a
pretty good core to start with. Chickley Lacharl Davis. People
didn't see him play this except for a couple exhibitions
that was not indicative of the way he played uh
(29:35):
in practice, and as the season one on, he was
really really good and many many many days was the
best player on the floor. And I think people who
also saw practice would agree with me on that, And
so that's a good start obviously. Miles Bird is gone.
I think Miles Heidi and Taj de Gorville are two
players that are probably on their way to other places.
(29:58):
You know, Taj is pretty obviously he he started five
games and then lost the starting position, average five point
five points and certainly he's not gonna be happy with
that role. And then Miles Heide's been here three years
and he was a starter, but he never really quite
turned the corner. So I could see him maybe wanting
to go somewhere else. That leads you know, Pharaoh Compton
(30:19):
DJ obviously, we kind of have an idea where what
his thoughts are. Pharaoh Compton and McGoo glath. I think
those are kind of up in the air. I think
they would maybe keep one of the two bigs between
Pharaoh and Heidi, and so maybe they're leaning towards Pharaoh
stain and maybe he's leaning towards stayin macgoo glos. I
think he's going to come down to a financial decision.
(30:41):
You know, I don't think, you know, I think he
was widely viewed as the highest paid player on the
team this year. I'm not sure he will be next year,
so that would probably be a cut in pay. Does
he really want to stay or does someone want to
take a flyer on him? And I suspect someone will
take a flyer on him and offer him seven figures
and he'll probably, you know, maybe have to make a
financial decision to leave. So probably sixty forty that he leaves,
(31:05):
maybe seventy thirty that he leaves, But Sarah, I think,
you know, maybe more than fifty to fifty that he stays.

It really interesting. We'll see how this all plays out.
Mark Ziegler with us right now from the Union Tribune
on San Diego Sports seven sixty. It's hard to know
what they'll seek to bring in because we don't know
what the roster is going to look like in terms
of what is what is retained. But if you're putting
yourselves in the shoes of Brian Dutcher and his staff,
we know what Touch said, for example, publicly about rebounding,
(31:33):
how they need to get better. That he said with
me maybe on a coach a show, and he may
have said it at a media availability, like there's one
thing we can get guys better at rebounding, and I
can go out and get a better rebounder. So what
do you think they're doing when when it comes to
the portal this year. What do you think they're going
to be thinking about once that opens up in terms.
Speaker 9 (31:51):
Of adding, Yeah, I think a big is going to
be the them on one priority and a big who
can rebound. I mean hein the idea where you want
a big who can rebound and a guy who can
shoot and stretch the floor. Neither of their starting five
this year could do that. Uh and so. And obviously Pharaoh,
if you keep them, is still not that kind of shooter,
more of an energy guy and interior player. So I
(32:14):
think that would be the priority. I don't know if
that's the same player or those are two different players.
You know, a rebounder and then a shooter. So I
think bigs are going to be the priority. And then
I think if BJ indeed leaves, you're gonna need to
the guard again. Elsie and Latrell is a really good start,
and that's going to be a really good backcourt. I'm
just telling you. I mean with with the you know,
(32:34):
the natural progression of Elsie from his freshman sophomore season
and what we saw this year, and he really wasn't healthy.
If he can get healthy, man, he can be a
really special player. And then Latrell is a special player
and really perfect for the modern game. Shoots threes and
gets to the rim. There's there's not a lot of
mid range. You can't shoot mid range, but he has
his whole idea is I'm gonna get to the rim
(32:55):
and get fouled or get a layup for both, or
I'm gonna shoot a three, And that's what you want
in the modern game with the metrics. So I think
they need another guard, maybe a backup guard or younger guard.
But that's I think kind of where they're looking. And again,
we want to see, you know, how many of these
guys end up staying. But you're definitely see three or
four prominent new faces next year on the roster, mark,
(33:18):
what do.

You know about the potential impact of like the freshman
rounding Zach White? He's six'. Six, again we didn't know a.
TON i didn't know a ton About Tay simmons heading,
in and heople led a very valuable role obviously for
them on the. Floor Is Zach white the type of
player that they expect to make a contribution in year?
Speaker 9 (33:36):
ONE i think all the freshmen they're recruiting now are
players they think can PLAY i don't think there's too
many projects they're going to recruit, anymore just because of
the way the world, is and you can just lose
them after a year and then you just wasted a
year your time in their. Time SO i think they
think he can. Play you, know the thing About Zach
white is he's not a great, shooter not a great,
(33:58):
scorer at least in high. School but he has that
opening anti of athleticism in length that will allow him
to play at the next. Level they're guys who are
more polished as high school players right, now but they
might not have the size or the length of the
athleticism and they get to the next level and as
polished as they, are they're going to. Struggle he at
(34:18):
least has the ceiling to get a lot. Better and you,
know his shot does not look bad to. Me he just.
Doesn't he's not on a team At Notre Dame Sherman
oaks where he really has to shoot it a. Lot
he's kind of going to do. Everything dirty. Work, guy
he had to guard a lot of. Bigs he won't
have to do that on the next. Level he'll be
able to switch a lot of ball. SCREENS i think,
defensively he'll be able to get on the, Floor SO
(34:40):
i think they have it as a chance he could.
PLAY i don't. THINK i don't project him as he
started right off the, bat BUT i think you could
see him step in as the season goes on and
get valuable.

Minutes my last question for, You, MARK i appreciate you taking,
time would just be your thoughts on how you think
they'll tackle their non conference schedule with additional dates heading
against THE pac, twelve which will have you, know a
good top with The gonzagas AND stsus In Utah, states
but still obviously doesn't have All quad one And quad
two opportunities with The Texas states And Fresno state examples as.

Well and now they have these additional, Dates so how
do you think they utilize.
Speaker 9 (35:13):
Them, YEAH i don't have to get six more games
than they have this year in the non, conference and you,
know part of the problem is just getting. Them BUT
i think the you, know from talking To Brian, dutcher
he still sort of ed to the idea of playing
as many good games and good teams as you. Can
but there there were a couple of examples this year
(35:35):
of Teams Utah state being, One Saint mary's being Another
miami Of ohio that played schedule that did not have
prominent games against power conference. TEAMS i Mean Utah state played.
NONE i Think. St mary's played one and it was
a lower level power conference team and they both had good.
Metrics and So brian that just talked about, that he,
is you, know one of his best attributes is he's
(35:57):
been able to adjust with the times and and while
he's STILL i think we'll try to play you, know
players era up three tough games there and then a
couple of three non conference neutral court one off games
against a power conference type. TEAM i think he'll still
try to do, that but he's also in the back
of mind looking at some of these other paths the

teams got into the tournament and how they schedule then
and maybe this, season but the following season you may
see more of, that more trying to get quad four
games at home and blow teams out and game the.
Metrics BUT i think what you'll see them do is
they'll have their eye. Games they'll play some some extra
un conference one off games where they get a small,
payday modest pay, Day they'll they'll flip that payday into

more by, games so maybe we'll, see you, know out
of those six, games three, more two more neutral court,
games and then maybe three more by games at.

if you looked around major League Baseball, two teams and
the Potteris and Tigers that do have playoff aspirations, and

the Tigers seemed to take it seriously as an opening day,

Some of it is like this, It's like on Christmas
Day if the first president. You're so excited when you're kid,

family or friends or whatever it is. People get excited
for holidays, Christmas other holidays as well, but just use

and it's Christmas Day and you wanted, you know, a

a book, ugly sweater from right, you got socks. And
now it doesn't mean the entire Christmas is ruined. There

Sure, then that's what I'm thinking after yesterday, Like there's
all this build up, they hadn't played in six months.

do they say? Like perception is reality? It's not. But
a lot of people will circle Nick Pavetta's outing and
he can make two or three good starts from here,

but they're gonna go back and be like, oh, Paveta's
really struggling this year, Like, well, actually no, he struggled
over day. But if you've watched his last three starts,
he's been good.

That That's what I would say about opening Baseball is
funny about that because you have these pillar points of
Opening Day and then primetime games. If you're the you know,
the maybe the Friday night Apple Apple Game, the Sunday
Night Baseball for yours on the ESPN that's now on NBC.
It is so because unless you are a diehard fan
of a certain team and you're watching night in, night out,

that that point about Pavetta, he could Michael King had
that a little bit last year. I believe it was
the first out and he gave up a kind of
an out, and then his next two stars were great.
But people were sitting here talking about Michael King having
trouble pitching.

I was even more excited for tonight than I was
yesterday because a well, Framervala is a great pitcher. It
is a little bit of a gut punch the fact
that he's lined up for the Tigers when the potter

But it puts, even though small sample sized, Paveta could
be great in the second start.

It puts even more, it writes it puts even more
pressure on Michael King tonight considering we're already concerned about
what it's going to be like when it gets to

starts where you feel good about who you're doing out
on the mound. You know, it's just it's concerning for
the back end. So it puts a lot of pressure.

Even though it's not necessarily Michael King's fault. It puts
a lot of pressure on Michael King tonight in game

say here on Valdez because he might we might look

we know, but he isn't touring Schooble. That's not the

they come, maybe across both leagues the last two years.
I mean, this guy's elite that on your finest day,

you're in trouble when you're allowing four runs to the
first inning, like I don't have any times in his
two cy Young seasons he's allowing five plus runs in general.
And that's not to say you can't chase him early,
make it hard to damage against the bullpenp Padres typically
are going to find ways to be in games. This
is a good team. They will be a good team.

I don't expect a lot of games they're just out of. Like, honestly,
in baseball, really bad teams find themselves out of more
games Colorado, right, the Padres are not going to find
themselves out of a ton of games inevitably over one

because Nick Castianos didn't play. Now, I do think it's
a fair conversation. Well, Nick Castianos last year with the

feat to not have him in there. Okay, mildly surprising,

tough lefty, Nick Castianos is not starting. Ty Frantz is,
I don't know if Castianos is ready yet to field

he's here to face tough lefties. He hasn't faced the

Well you thought too, especially with I mean sure, just

Kyle Tucker or one hundreds of millions of dollars for
some high price free agent. Nick Castianos is a free

has had some really big moments over his career with
the Phillies. I'm with you, so I'm surprised that at least,

I mean, I guess I don't. I never really got
the whole opening Day. You're gonna give it to certain
guys because it's opening day. You want to give it
to Gavin Sheets yesterday. That's fine, but I am surprised
tonight that he's not in the lineup. That feels odd

Going by day two, it's like you got Louis Campusano
in the lineup, you know exactly then you think you'd
get like Nick Castianos in the lineup. I know catchers
often rotate more often, especially when you had a bad

that it's a little surprising to me that he's not playing.

We know he got beat up but look at his
track record in two years as good as they come.

ten to eleven games of the season. You're seeing four
or five of the game's best. We can't just say, well, well,

because those pitchers are really good. You've invested a billion
dollars in your lineup.

I kind of terrible outing. I expect Nick Pavetta to
get back to being Nick Pavetta. But I'm with you

on the bats. It was a little disappointing being at home.
How anemick they were. I get Schooble's unbelievable is unbelievable,
But coming off the WBC, we were talking about this
the other day, I thought that because of the WBC,
you might see the bats for teams be better faster,

to a month is ahead of major league hitters and
they kind of start getting to it.

can be a little bit of a drone at times,

end of the year, when we're talking about this team

in August in September and they have a two game
leader or two game deficit, you do kind of go
back to some of these games where you think, like, oh, they.

Yeah, you can nitpick at all, and with baseball there's
certainly a lot of games to nitpick just because of
the quantity.

of juice to this team.

everyone's talking the last couple of weeks will he play
in the Masters, And now we're hearing this.

It's like if Tiger could just get his life right
because it's like trying to come back, trying to come
back and play golf. It feels like I should be
on the back burner when we're getting stories like this

In the accident, it's just crazy because in two thousand
and nine, before the like that's the moment of time
with the initial scandal, like the when he crashed his car,
but there's the extra marital stuff, and I don't even
want to rehash it. I don't remember all the details.
It's been seventeen years. But that's my point. Think about that,
that was seventeen years ago, and it feels like there's

like Tiger before that and there's Tiger, and there's a
big difference, right. I mean, if we actually took that
date and time and looked at his career accomplishments before
then and after, I bet it looks like two completely
different golfers. Obviously.

And also we were talking about this earlier this week,
all three of us, about on the on the field
stuff and on the you know, athletes who keep coming back.
I mean, it's hard seeing athletes, whether it's golfers or
Tom Brady was talking about coming back to the NFL
yesterday and the NFL shut him down. We've seen countless
boxers trying to come back, Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, and

it's it's hard seeing these guys who you know, a
lot of people loved and still love and a door
as kind of shells themselves in them in the ring,
and now we're seeing or in the ring or in
the in the sporting world, and now it feels like
with Tiger is just you know, one thing after another.
It's it's very disappointing. And again glad everyone in the
accident is okay and nobody was armed.

three era guy. Put him on the mount. He'll have

twenty twenty five. So I'm hopeful because I've seen him
at his best, But I honestly don't know what to
expect with Michael King.

It is interesting with opening days that spring training a
lot of unless you're following it very close, kind of
get swept under the rug, and sometimes it can be
Opening day can be a fresh slate. Nick Pivetta struggled
in spring training, was not very good in opening day

in Boston. Yesterday it is Michael King. To your point,
we don't know what we're getting. Maybe in a weird way,
there's some pressure off considered. There could be more pressure
or less pressure in the sense of Nick Povetta is
the number one and he didn't perform very well yesterday,
so not a super high bar to clear. But yeah,
it does feel like Michael King is a big star

for him because he was kind of the next big
thing with the Patres and for whatever that is, whether
injuries or just kind of odd timing not great play,
hasn't really ascended into that, but he could be. Certainly
has the opportunity in the stuff to be an absolute
ace for the Potter.

But with Miles one hundred percent, no see this coming

big tip often and you know, when he says things
like I'm going to graduate in May, that's pretty much
telegraphing what's coming.

From the messaging today, it didn't mention what comes next professionally, right,
are you envisioning that he doesn't go through that route

I think so. And that's the interesting thing to me
now about college sports is these guys are getting paid
so much money that it's more than they could possibly
make unless you're a top maybe ten draft pick in
the NBA. And even in that case, I think some
universities could probably match that. And that's how I don't
whack the college and I al revenue sharing. The market
(26:20):
for football and basketball players has become this is not
their market value. People have to understand this. This is
university is just going into debt and throwing money at
guys with no consequences for their debt. Now that day,
you know that that piper is going to come calling
one day, and it'll probably be pretty soon when the
academics side of the campus says, wait a minute, are
we a university or we are a sports team here?
(26:41):
And they and they put some reins on that. But
right now you're just seeing you know, the market's going
to I mean I saw one thing where the market
was going up thirty five percent from last year already,
and that's just university throwing money at guys, and so
their market value is what they would make in the
NBA or what they would make in the G League,
or what would they make in Europe, which are you know, uh,

sports organizations that are run like a business, and you
know what you take care is what you can pay out,
not college where they're just throwing money as no consequence
or no attention to whether they're actually making money, if
there's any profit here and there, and everyone just losing
money and paying players, and so why wouldn't you just
stay in college?

Yeah, it is certainly a very unique time, and that's
probably putting it mildly. Mark Zeedler from the UT with
us right now in San Diego Sports seven sixty. So
you wrote about BJ Davis, who, like you said, through
his agency, expressed an interest in entering the portal. But
then you have followed up with BJ in some capacity.
What was the latest or what what did BJ make
you aware of when you when you talk to him.
Speaker 9 (27:44):
I checked put them back and forth and he said
he's still considering staying with Those were his words, and
I expect that he'll be gone, but I think the
door is a jar. And if sandygo state came back
to him, and if he came back to them and
they kind of met in the middle there, Obviously he's
going to take less money to stay than he probably
(28:04):
could get somewhere else. You know, he's a guy that
he admitted last year, he's a little bit of a homebody,
a little bit of a you know, doesn't like to
jump around. His parents are like that, and so I
think there's certainly a sentiment to maybe not jumping into
the unknown. But if the money is so much greater
than I think, he'll do it. But I think that
the door is open slightly. I don't think it's wide open,

but I think it's slightly open. And maybe it's one
of those things where it's it's hard to say goodbye,
and the finality of it he's not quite prepared for yet,
but that will come on April seventh. If he's in
the transfer portal in April seventh, I think the chances
him staying are pretty slim.

Do you have any additional feel for the remainder of
the roster. Again, it's so fluid, just in the landscape,
like around the country, it's so hard to know. I mean,
nobody's really contracted anywhere you could just get up and
enter the portal try. I think there's another handful of
players obviously that still have eligibility that we're on San
Diego State, whether it's the young guys, Tay Simmons and Harrington,
also young taj To Goreville, Pharaoh Compton, there's Miles Heidi Shoot,
(29:04):
Lacharl Davis sat out last year. But again, any player
could get up and go at their own desire. So
do you have a feel for the remainder of the roster, not.
Speaker 9 (29:14):
One hundred percent. I mean, I think it's fair to
say that Tay Simmons, Latrelle and I think they're very
hopeful with Elsie Pan on the situation with his with
his leg, will come back next year. And that's a
pretty good core to start with. Chickley Lacharl Davis. People
didn't see him play this except for a couple exhibitions
that was not indicative of the way he played uh
(29:35):
in practice, and as the season one on, he was
really really good and many many many days was the
best player on the floor. And I think people who
also saw practice would agree with me on that, And
so that's a good start obviously. Miles Bird is gone.
I think Miles Heidi and Taj de Gorville are two
players that are probably on their way to other places.
(29:58):
You know, Taj is pretty obviously he he started five
games and then lost the starting position, average five point
five points and certainly he's not gonna be happy with
that role. And then Miles Heide's been here three years
and he was a starter, but he never really quite
turned the corner. So I could see him maybe wanting
to go somewhere else. That leads you know, Pharaoh Compton
(30:19):
DJ obviously, we kind of have an idea where what
his thoughts are. Pharaoh Compton and McGoo glath. I think
those are kind of up in the air. I think
they would maybe keep one of the two bigs between
Pharaoh and Heidi, and so maybe they're leaning towards Pharaoh
stain and maybe he's leaning towards stayin macgoo glos. I
think he's going to come down to a financial decision.
(30:41):
You know, I don't think, you know, I think he
was widely viewed as the highest paid player on the
team this year. I'm not sure he will be next year,
so that would probably be a cut in pay. Does
he really want to stay or does someone want to
take a flyer on him? And I suspect someone will
take a flyer on him and offer him seven figures
and he'll probably, you know, maybe have to make a
financial decision to leave. So probably sixty forty that he leaves,
(31:05):
maybe seventy thirty that he leaves, But Sarah, I think,
you know, maybe more than fifty to fifty that he stays.
Speaker 5 (31:13):
It really interesting. We'll see how this all plays out.
Mark Ziegler with us right now from the Union Tribune
on San Diego Sports seven sixty. It's hard to know
what they'll seek to bring in because we don't know
what the roster is going to look like in terms
of what is what is retained. But if you're putting
yourselves in the shoes of Brian Dutcher and his staff,
we know what Touch said, for example, publicly about rebounding,
(31:33):
how they need to get better. That he said with
me maybe on a coach a show, and he may
have said it at a media availability, like there's one
thing we can get guys better at rebounding, and I
can go out and get a better rebounder. So what
do you think they're doing when when it comes to
the portal this year. What do you think they're going
to be thinking about once that opens up in terms.
Speaker 9 (31:51):
Of adding, Yeah, I think a big is going to
be the them on one priority and a big who
can rebound. I mean hein the idea where you want
a big who can rebound and a guy who can
shoot and stretch the floor. Neither of their starting five
this year could do that. Uh and so. And obviously Pharaoh,
if you keep them, is still not that kind of shooter,
more of an energy guy and interior player. So I
(32:14):
think that would be the priority. I don't know if
that's the same player or those are two different players.
You know, a rebounder and then a shooter. So I
think bigs are going to be the priority. And then
I think if BJ indeed leaves, you're gonna need to
the guard again. Elsie and Latrell is a really good start,
and that's going to be a really good backcourt. I'm
just telling you. I mean with with the you know,
(32:34):
the natural progression of Elsie from his freshman sophomore season
and what we saw this year, and he really wasn't healthy.
If he can get healthy, man, he can be a
really special player. And then Latrell is a special player
and really perfect for the modern game. Shoots threes and
gets to the rim. There's there's not a lot of
mid range. You can't shoot mid range, but he has
his whole idea is I'm gonna get to the rim
(32:55):
and get fouled or get a layup for both, or
I'm gonna shoot a three, And that's what you want
in the modern game with the metrics. So I think
they need another guard, maybe a backup guard or younger guard.
But that's I think kind of where they're looking. And again,
we want to see, you know, how many of these
guys end up staying. But you're definitely see three or
four prominent new faces next year on the roster, mark,
(33:18):
what do.

You know about the potential impact of like the freshman
rounding Zach White? He's six'. Six, again we didn't know a.
TON i didn't know a ton About Tay simmons heading,
in and heople led a very valuable role obviously for
them on the. Floor Is Zach white the type of
player that they expect to make a contribution in year?
Speaker 9 (33:36):
ONE i think all the freshmen they're recruiting now are
players they think can PLAY i don't think there's too
many projects they're going to recruit, anymore just because of
the way the world, is and you can just lose
them after a year and then you just wasted a
year your time in their. Time SO i think they
think he can. Play you, know the thing About Zach
white is he's not a great, shooter not a great,
(33:58):
scorer at least in high. School but he has that
opening anti of athleticism in length that will allow him
to play at the next. Level they're guys who are
more polished as high school players right, now but they
might not have the size or the length of the
athleticism and they get to the next level and as
polished as they, are they're going to. Struggle he at
(34:18):
least has the ceiling to get a lot. Better and you,
know his shot does not look bad to. Me he just.
Doesn't he's not on a team At Notre Dame Sherman
oaks where he really has to shoot it a. Lot
he's kind of going to do. Everything dirty. Work, guy
he had to guard a lot of. Bigs he won't
have to do that on the next. Level he'll be
able to switch a lot of ball. SCREENS i think,
defensively he'll be able to get on the, Floor SO
(34:40):
i think they have it as a chance he could.
PLAY i don't. THINK i don't project him as he
started right off the, bat BUT i think you could
see him step in as the season goes on and
get valuable.

Minutes my last question for, You, MARK i appreciate you taking,
time would just be your thoughts on how you think
they'll tackle their non conference schedule with additional dates heading
against THE pac, twelve which will have you, know a
good top with The gonzagas AND stsus In Utah, states
but still obviously doesn't have All quad one And quad
two opportunities with The Texas states And Fresno state examples as.

Well and now they have these additional, Dates so how
do you think they utilize.
Speaker 9 (35:13):
Them, YEAH i don't have to get six more games
than they have this year in the non, conference and you,
know part of the problem is just getting. Them BUT
i think the you, know from talking To Brian, dutcher
he still sort of ed to the idea of playing
as many good games and good teams as you. Can
but there there were a couple of examples this year
(35:35):
of Teams Utah state being, One Saint mary's being Another
miami Of ohio that played schedule that did not have
prominent games against power conference. TEAMS i Mean Utah state played.
NONE i Think. St mary's played one and it was
a lower level power conference team and they both had good.
Metrics and So brian that just talked about, that he,
is you, know one of his best attributes is he's
(35:57):
been able to adjust with the times and and while
he's STILL i think we'll try to play you, know
players era up three tough games there and then a
couple of three non conference neutral court one off games
against a power conference type. TEAM i think he'll still
try to do, that but he's also in the back
of mind looking at some of these other paths the

teams got into the tournament and how they schedule then
and maybe this, season but the following season you may
see more of, that more trying to get quad four
games at home and blow teams out and game the.
Metrics BUT i think what you'll see them do is
they'll have their eye. Games they'll play some some extra
un conference one off games where they get a small,
payday modest pay, Day they'll they'll flip that payday into

more by, games so maybe we'll, see you, know out
of those six, games three, more two more neutral court,
games and then maybe three more by games at.
