spring football is underway on the mass we'll talk about

I don't even know what day he arrived. It was

before the start of spring training though, Like take yourself back,
close your eyes, not if you're driving, okay, but take
yourself back to the Super Bowl. Remember the Super Bowl
this year, like the football game between the two teams
that they played. That's how long Kevin has been in Peeria.
That's a long time, right. That was early February and

now it's late March. I mean that's at six seven
weeks and that's a long time. So he's I'm sure
thrilled to be heading back home and then Opening Day
again is going to get underway on Thursday. It really
is a terrific pitching matchup. As Brnch's reference there in
the in the update, Tarik Schooble, you know who was

I thought an interesting talking point during the WBC because
he pitched and only made one appearance and he wants
to be ready for Opening Day, which is admirable. Here's
the thing, at the end of the day, Tarik Schooble
is as good as they come. I mean it's as
simple as that. You know, two we are essentially last year.
This guy has been a dominant force, whether it was

twenty twenty four, twenty twenty five. This is as good
of a pitcher as there is basically right now in
Major League Baseball. He's got a signed young, he's got
two sings. There's not a lot of guys with multiple
SI youngs in the primes of their career, and he's
still held. He's twenty nine. He's twenty nine. And then
you've got Nick Pavetta who had like a renaissance last

year in San Diego with Ruby Dieblo pitching for the
Padres in the first year of a four year deal,
which is really a two year deal because of an
opt down. They paid him like nothing last year and
he had an amazing year. So we talked about this earlier.
But you can't put too much in it. Of course,
it's one game. But would you like to play well? Yeah,

would you like to hit Schooble? Yeah? Is it something
that gives you confidence that if you fast forward six
months from now and you're facing elite starting pitching and
you can find a way to win, all of that
to me is a yes. With a team like San Diego,
that's a veteran team that's been in the postseason a lot,
but has had a lot of disappointments as well. In
the postseason, they haven't always played their best baseball against

the best teams. Detroit is a very good team as well,
that was in the postseason last year. So you know,
I'm not putting too much stock in it, but I
am saying you'd prefer, you know, you'd prefer the good
as a post the bad. This is the type of
series when you're facing what Framber Valdez and to reach Scooble.
If you do get out of the gates playing well,

that's encouraging. Now, last year's birthday started fourteen and three.
That was essentially their year in terms of how they
got to the postseason. And I'm not asking them to
start fourteen and three. That is not the point. And
I'm not saying they have to win Opening Day or
win this series against Detroit. I'm just saying it would
be nice to get off on the right foot after
the long spring training, facing a late starting pitching, having

Nick Pavet on the mound, and having Craigs Damin as
your first time manager.

It'd be nice, is what I would say. Yeah, it
could also be discouraging too, though. You know, some days
I wish they'd just have some guy making his major
league debut. Well, no, because they do horrible against those
guys too, But typically you'd want some guy that you
know is making his debut opposed to the ace, just
because you know what if they go out and you know,

only get three hits or something, then you know, it
might just kind of be discouraging to start the year
off on a you know, just a low offensive note
like that.

But that's what I'm gonna use your line, and I
one hundred percent of growing we say, guys when I
when we get calls on Thursday or Friday, whenever it
is after Thursday. Let's say the two paths they lose
three to one or they win three one. Let's just

be anything. It's baseball. But let's say they lose three
to one and they have three hits and the only

but they've been in four times. I think I have
the math on that right is at five and seven.

So what is that for the last six I think
they've been in for the last six. They're trying to
make it now five of the last seven years. My
point is like, I'll have a little bit of faith

in what aj Preller has built that I'm not going
to just completely sell off stock after I don't care
what they do in the homestand or truthfully in the
you know, you get the point. Yes, the old saying
would be, you can't win the pennant in April, but
you can lose it. You can't even lose pennants anymore.
Six teams are in the postseason the National League. Now, yes,

the worst team in the sport through April is not
making the playoffs. Would be my guess. The team to
start six and twenty six. They're not making the playoffs.
Padres aren't that team, and they might not start twenty
six and six. That's fine. They could start that's thirty
two games. They start sixteen and sixteen for example, they
were fourteen to three last year. The issue with last

year Brem was everyone had these high, high hopes out
of the gates. All of a sudden it became I
don't know if it was World Series or bust, but
it was postseason Iran, maybe Division title or bust. And
then they didn't fulfill that. They made the postseason but
didn't lift up to it. You start sixteen and sixteen, Yeah,
maybe people won't be thrilled overall with their performance and
they'll be a game out of a playoff spot at

sixteen and sixteen, thirty two games in. So that's all
you're trying to do. You just got to tread water.
The parts that's going to be most fascinating to watch
is what does their rotation actually look like when you
go through it like three times. Is Herman Marquez back
to being good? Is Walker Bueller healthy? Is Randy Vasquez improved?

Is Joe Musgrove returning at some point in the next
couple of weeks. That's the part for me, Bran, and

gonna do just are they gonna just physically gonna be.

Like the reoccurring not theme, but reoccurring issue every single
year with the Padres is when is one of the
starters gonna go down? And you know, I'm interested to see.
I kind of wonder if they held off on announcing
the starter because they were kind of iffy about the

the arm fatigue that Paveta talked about. Was it last
week or like maybe a week and a half go
now yep, So I was kind of thinking maybe they
were kind of holding off on that because they didn't
want to go and you know, name a starter last
week and then have the arm fatigue actually be something
other than arm fatigue and then have them be like,
oh yeah, never mind, we're gonna go with this guy instead.

It's gonna be an interesting year.

You know, as long as they don't start that opening
weekend the way they did.

Almost fuss it five years ago when they opened against
the Dodgers, and like in the three games, it was
more than five years ago.

It feels like, yes, seven eight years ago when.

They got outscored like twenty eight to three in the
whole series. It was just but it was so bad
that it's always is going to stick out as like
kind of the precursor of what's to come.

I agree with you it there because what happens is
perception becomes reality. I would come on the radio, by
the way, if the Padres got swept in this weekend
series by the Tigers and didn't score a run, and
I wouldn't be selling season over. People would be telling
you that. Some people on social media would say, like,
this team ain't in and what's wrong? And everyone's got
to go and bring back Mike Shild and why do
you extend aj Preller and sell this team already? John?

You know Siler that that would be some of the
reaction I think. But it's a very very long year,
which has its advantages and its disadvantages. You know, sometimes
you wish it wasn't if the Padres were a football
team and started fourteen and three like they did last year.
You're playing, you think you're going to a super Bowl,
but they're a baseball team. Start fourteen to three and

then they came back to earth, and they really came
back to earth in that three game series against the
Cubs because they couldn't score. But all gets here's the thing.
This is the time of year where you should have
the optimism and the hopes and the excitement. There's no
reason not to. This is not Colorado, this isn't Miami.
This team has a chance to be good. I think

the team probably has a chance to be very good
and take this Fancraft stuff out of it for a moment.
So what so some projection site says they're supposed to
win eighty games, So someone says they only have a
one or two percent chance of winning the World Series.
That it's always like that. They were never going into
the year with a fifteen percent chance of winning the
World Series, and you know they were gonna win ninety

nine games and projected to win the division. It's always
uphill in San Diego. It's never downhill. It's always hard
in the NLS. You're always competing against big budgets like
the LA Dodgers, and it's like it just makes it
that much sweeter when you put together a season, which
hopefully they're able to do in twenty twenty six. I'm
I'm gonna discount this as long as possible. Fangrafts saying

they're gonna go seventy nine point six and eighty two
point four this year. Of course you can't do that,
but fangraft is essentially saying they're gonna go eighty and
eighty two with a one percent chance of winning the
division and a point six percent chance of winning the
World Series. I put that in a bulletin board opening day.

the plan, by the way, for Manny Machado in twenty

twenty six? Will he finally get more rest? Is he

Craig Stammon also quoted saying he's no spring chicken anymore.
And we want the best for him. He wants the
best for himself, wants the best for the team. We
can make good decisions that way. With that in mind,

talk to Manny Machado on March twenty whatever, today is
twenty third, say Manny, here's our plan. We want you

to go from one hundred and fifty eight games. I'm
making to one forty eight. And here's what our plan is.
We're gonna sit you twice in April, and three times
in many, four times in June. Whatever it is. He
might say, you know what, great. All of a sudden
you get into it, though, and you need to win
a series, or you gotta grab a game, or you
have the right pitching matchup, you know, and all of

a sudden, he's not sitting anymore, and you're doing it.
And you're basically doing it by taking the bat out
of his hands, which again I think you can you
can pick your spots in doing that. But you get
into the second half of the year and you're fighting
to get in or fighting for a division or fighting
for a wild card spot. I just don't know how
easy it's gonna be to keep Machado from himself and

to keep Manny Machado, you know, not in a starting
lineup for the team.

That's why you do it in the first half of
the year. Mostly just kind of think of it like
a you know, front loaded contract. You know they're gonna
they're gonna, you know, get a lot of the rest
days per se out in the first half of the year.
So then he's you know, quote a little fresher, you know,
for the second half of the season. So because I

don't think Manny's going to be in denial that you know,
he's getting older and he's not going to be able
to play you know, one hundred and fifty eight every year.
And well I shouldn't say that. He probably could play
one hundred and fifty eight out year, but it's he's
getting to the point where he shouldn't play all one
hundred and fifty eight, especially if they seriously, you know,

are talking about you know, making a move in the postseason,
then they need him to be as fresh as possible.
And you know, we kind of not ripped on Hilt,
but we kind of questioned last year. You know, dude,
you gott to ever give Manny a day off almost
to the point where we're almost you know, we're joking about,
you know, if Shilty was scared of Manny to where

he didn't want to bench him because he was afraid
man he was going to yell at him. So you know,
I I think it's something that it needs to happen,
and I think he'll be beneficial for the team. But yeah,
to your point of, you know, if we're in August
and we're in the middle of a pennant race, you know,
we can't really just go, oh, well, you know, Manny,
is this your tenth game?

You know that was our deal.

Every ten games you're gonna sit I don't just do
it in the front half of the year, you know,
and then so then he'll just be fresher for the
second half.

Yeah, I mean, would I would agree with that idea, Like,
listen the reason to sit him, Brent. Potentially He's usually
been a strong finisher to a year. Kevin writes about this,
but last year, listen to this final forty five games.
This guy is holding on for dear life. He hit
two oh six in the final forty five games with

an on base plus slugging of six thirteen. So you know,
was he not healthy? Was it just the fact that
he's not a spring chicken anymore? Do use Craig Damon's term.
I think it's probably more health at that point than
it was anything else. But like, you need to prevent
that from replicating itself again. You can't have Machado heading

into the postseason hitting two oh six over the final
forty five games, like for a number of reasons, A
for your team and B for your chances in the
post as well, So they'll be a plan. But the
famous Tyson line, everyone's got a plan until they get
punched in the face. You know, if you start, here's
the ideal scenario for me, here's the ideal scenario. If

you get off to a good start like they did
last year, and it doesn't have to be fourteen and three,
but if you get off to a good enough start now,
it gives you cushion to navigate. But anytime you get
off to a bad start, you're always chasing. I go
back to Bob Melvins last year, twenty twenty three, and
he's like, I'd like to get these guys off their
feet or give him a blow, but we're we're not
playing well, So I can't justify not playing my best

players and the team isn't playing well. To me, it's
a you gotta have a plan. Like Dodgers have a plan.
They know what to do with the rotation. They can
sit someone for six weeks for the betterment of September
and October. Padres don't necessarily have that luxury, but they
need to have a plan that is executed with Machado.
I would be shocked if Machado didn't get more off

days this year. And you can't. You can't just say, well,
it's dhing every day, so he's getting off days. No,
he's gonna need some true off days in there as well.
He'll get more. The question is how many more will
he get this year, because it's probably against his wishes
truthfully to give him more off days.

I'm kind of wondering just because of how I'm trying
to think of how to phrase this. Now I lost
my train of thought. I hate it when that happens.

Oh, I remember now, you know, I've always been saying,
for you know, past like two or three seasons, that
I wish they would take the earlier, like the first
two months more. I'll say more seriously for lack of
a better term, not that they're not taking it serious,
but you know, so then when we get two months
in the season, we're not automatically in like some twelve

game hole behind the Dodgers.

And to your point of you know, if we can
get out to a decent start, it will take off
some of the pressure of you know, saying, oh, we
can't bench Manny, we got to leave him out there.
So maybe if they approached the early early part of
the season with a little more urgency opposed to the

the old, you know cliche of oh it games in May,
they don't matter or they don't mean anything. It doesn't
matter if we lost this series to the Rangers in
May because it's May and you know, nothing, nothing that
happens in May really matters. Well, maybe if they take
the earlier months a little more serious than that, will yes,
and like you said, they'll give them leeway then to go, hey,
(20:43):
you know, we're not you know, twenty games behind first
place here at the beginning of June or in the
middle of June. So it gives us more room to
you know, tip Manny in this you know series against
you know, Seattle or somebody like that, opposed to just going, yeah,
you know, we're we're still chasing them, and now you know,
we don't. We can't really afford to sit him again

because you know, we can't afford to lose another game
and fall another game back.

Yeah again, I think they'll they'll have a plan, But
how does the team perform and how does that impact
the plan? Is my question, and I'm with you. If
your six games up in a playoff spot, it's gonna
be a lot easier to sit them a random afternoon
in July as opposed to being three games out of
a playoff spot in a random afternoon in July. We'll

State Football General Managers' practice somehow underway on the MESA
no offseason when it comes to STSU Athletics. They'll play
a spring football game in early May at San Diego
State and they'll be practicing about fifteen practices over the
next five or six weeks, and again spring football starting
(22:15):
earlier today at San Diego State. So Caleb always appreciates
you taking time for us. When I think about like
day one of anything, Like in school, it was always
like you get your syllabus, you know, on day one.
It wasn't like an intense day one of class. What's
day one of spring football like under Shawn Lewis. And
thanks for hopping on absolutely well.

First off, appreciate you guys for having me.

Always always a pleasure.

But yeah, day one is always funny because it's so
much more about evaluating the energy at practice than it
is you know, the mas, the x's and those, because again,
everything is always going to be a little bit of
learning on day one. But it's always a good sign
to leave the practice field and you know, recapping with
the recruits and they're like, oh my gosh, you guys
(22:58):
are flying around. It was so in my mind I'm
sitting here like, gosh, that could have been fixed. That
could have been fixed. But all in all, the guys
were flying around, everyone was having fun, people staying healthy,
So it was all good.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Obviously for ice tech fans. I think, you know, you
always start the conversation with the quarterback and the good
news for San Diego status, you've got a returning quarterback
in Jayden Denegal. Now we know he was not fully
healthy last year since had surgery to repair his shoulder.
What are the you know, what's the expectation here for
Jaden entering his second year in the system. Obviously you've
(23:31):
got a deep quarterback room as well, but it's got
to be good to have a quarterback returning to a
system that he's now familiar with.
Speaker 5 (23:38):
Absolutely, you know, we're looking for Jayden to really take
that next leap in his leadership and continuing to elevate
and all those steps in his games. But again, to
have a returning quarterback, especially at this level where a
lot of the best guys in our conference are always
looking for the next spot. You know, Jayden was someone
who you know, had had seen everything, had one national championshapion,
(24:00):
and he wanted to be the guy, wanted to be
the quarterback here and again it's close to home for him.
So to keep a local kid like that home and
someone that wants to be here, you know, it's so
exciting to see what he's going to do to elevate
his game, because again, he's got all the tools, he's got,
all the experience. He's a guy that legitimately could have
an NFL future if he if he takes these next
(24:21):
steps right, So, really really excited for him to continuing
to elevate and really you know, soak into the system
year two and find a way to just take take
jumps in every step of his game.

Literally has a national championship ring from his time at
the University of Michigan. Incredibly as well. You know, last year,
I think we saw a lot of talent on the
outside with the receivers, and then I look at some
of the work that you know, you and the staff
and Sean have done to just continue to just add
depth to that room. There's a lot of key players

back when I think about obviously you know the Donovan
Browns and the jail and Hawkins, and you know all
the pieces that you have as well, and then what
you've added to it. Can you take us through that
wide receiver room head against the year?
Speaker 5 (25:08):
Absolutely? So that was one of the number one key
plans of attacks that we had in the porl is
because I believe, you know, I've been around a lot
of great play callers, but I believe Coach Lewis is
one of the best play callers in the country, if
not the best, and he just needs as many chef pieces,
as many toys as possible to kind of put to use.
(25:29):
And you started to see at the back half of
last year, you know, had a couple injuries and the
depths just wasn't where it needed to be. So we
wanted to make sure almost leave no doubt, you know,
we returned every significant contributor in that room, but we
also added to it to where it doesn't matter if
there's injuries, it doesn't matter if young guys end up elevating,
like we think we're gonna regardless, we're gonna have the
(25:50):
most dynamic room in the Pac twelve. That's the plan,
all right.

So Caleb Davis, san Diego State's football general manager with
us right now in San Diego Sports seven sixty again,
spring practice underway on the MESA. As AZ Tech fans know,
San Diego State had one of the best defenses in
the country last year, but obviously a ton of change
coming out of whether it's graduation or portal. Some key contributors,

guys like Trey White, Owen Shambliss no longer with San
Diego State, obviously, Chris Johnson, Bryce Phillips, and I'm failing
to mention a number of others as well. What's the
hope with Spring in terms of having a feel and
an identity for replacing some of these key pieces with
some of these new pieces that you've added over the
last handful of months.

Absolutely, I think the number one key thing was, you know,
having coached Somemler, coach Dimitri Summler, be able to re
embody that room where he's been here a number of
years and to get to retain him as the defensive coordinator,
have his shot to run it. I think that piece is.

So key for continuity.

But then the other piece that people forget about is,
you know, we believe we have all conference players at
all three levels of the defense that are returning from
last year, between you know, a Brady Nassau on the
d line room, Tonald Lutoolie, who's who has been a
two time All Conference player, and Dale Sean Staley who
made the choice to return to the team after entering
his name into the portal. So with those three pieces
(27:14):
of continuity, along with continuity and play calling, now it's
just having the pieces that we went out and obtained
in the portal to come gel together as a unit,
and Day one was really really promising where we saw
some flashes with some of the new guys and it's
just really really exciting to have that blend of yeah,
obviously there's the new, but there's such a core stability
(27:35):
that's there at all three levels that now is just
how do we play off of it. How do we
get these new pieces to come together and again gel
together as a defense, because as everyone knows defense, it
doesn't matter who your best one is, it's about who
your worst one is, because one guy.

Can ruin a play.

So can we get all eleven guys to fire like
we did last year? And Day one was a really
really promising sign of that.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
To switch back to offense for a moment because I
didn't mention Bert Emanuel Junior, who really showed flashes throughout
the course of last year on the MESA primarily at quarterback,
including in the bowl game for STSU. He's going to
spend more time at receiver. I don't know if we'll
still get some snaps at quarterback or not, but I
mean this is just a playmaker. We know the lineage
his father spent a long time in the NFL as
(28:22):
a receiver. What will it take for Bert to make
that transition, because we know once the football is in
his hands, he could be one of the most explosive
players on the team. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:32):
Well, that's the thing with him too, is like everything's
a mindset to be able to shift from quarterback to
receiver and make plays there. You know something that I
don't know if everyone knows, like that was his decision
to come to us and say, hey, I love my
time here. I know I'm the backup quarterback, but let
me go be a playmaker like I know I can be,
and we were all fired up as a staff. So
he's a kid that again does all the little things
(28:55):
right to where every single day he's out on the
jugs machine getting extra work in, and every single day
he's working on his craft, and he's already reshaped his
body to where you know, a year ago he's built
to play the quarterback position, and you see it come
out and flashes, especially against North Texas in the bowl game.
But to be able to spend a full off season
really training in that position, I'm really really excited to
(29:18):
see what he's able to do to elevate that room.

Caleb David, San Diego State Football GM with us right

a better feel for this than most where is San
Diego State in terms of a resources perspective. You're entering
this new league right obviously with Oregon State and Washington
State and a number of schools from the Mountain West.
How do you feel about the resources you have obviously

and putting this roster together and putting you in a
position to compete from year one in the new PAC twelve.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
Yeah, Well, first off, I'd be remiss to say like
everything we were able to do through the portal through
roster retention, you know, we were able to keep twenty
one out of twenty five our significant contributors, which is
anyone that played at least two hundred reps for US,
which by my account's top ten in the country. And
then we were able to bring in the best portal
class in the conference. And none of that's possible without
(30:12):
the support of the community. And I know the finish
the Climb campaign was so vital to that success. So
again I can't thank the community, the alumni, the donors,
the booster base enough for what they've done to help us.
And now I think the last piece to that is,
how do we continue to pack the stadium? How do
(30:32):
we sell out season tickets? How do we sell out
snap Dragon Stadium? And that's the last final step to
where we've done so many great things to get us
to the nine win mark last year, but how do
we do things at an elite level every single aspect
and really sell out snap Dragon Stadium and now make
that push to not just participate in the PAC twelve,
(30:53):
but to dominate the PAC twelve as leaders in the conference.

pretty crazy. They were just in the playoff. A road
game that's drivable obviously against UCLA at the Rose Bowl.
How does the schedule shake up in your opinion overall?
Speaker 5 (31:29):
Oh, I absolutely love it because I think you look
at the non conference historical success. Obviously we all know
UCLA right up the road, but even James Madison coming
off a playoff year, but even a game away at Toledo,
who year in and year out, is competing for MAC championships.
So I really really like the fact that we're tested
(31:50):
early and often, and then we're going to be able
to utilize that to kind of build momentum going into
the PAC twelve schedule. So I'm fired up with it,
I think, just for from a home game perspective, this
has got to be one of the most packed schedules
in recent history, obviously since my time here. But I'm
really really excited to see what we're able to do
(32:12):
to come together, not just as a team, but as
a whole San Diego community and really make twenty twenty
six the year of the Aztec.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
Last question for you, Kal before you go, and we
appreciate your time, is twenty twenty six like completely new
slate or in some respect is it a little bit
of unfinished business where you get to nine wins, you're
a win away from hosting a conference title game. You're
in overtime, actually double overtime in that game where a
win gets you into a conference title game. Is that
(32:41):
at all part of the story in twenty twenty six
or does the slate completely wipe clean?
Speaker 5 (32:47):
You know, I think the motto stays the same. But again,
if you dwell too much on the pass, you're bound
to forget about the president. So I think a big
piece of that is understand our history. Go back and
for all the new portal kids, like go watch that
New Mexico game, or even two years ago, go watch
that Washington State game where where we had it at home,
(33:09):
and understand the history, but then wipe it clean and
say no, this year's new year. So I think there's
a sense of both, like you got to understand the history.
You got to know the history, but then you've got
to use it to strive to where Again, the MADA
for next year, more than anything, is just.

Leave no doubt.

You know, you leave your conference championship aspirations in the
hopes of whether it's computer rankings or whatnot. And again,
you don't get to make that decision but we go
win that game, then none of that matters anyway. So now,
how do we understand the history and how do we
just leave no doubt as we go into next season
and really dominate the first year of the PAC twelve.

is now suggesting that Jason Adam, the terrific setup reliever
for the Padres that had that crazy freak injury late
last year, the achilles, he was expected to be available
opening day. It is now expected he will start this
season on the IL. So we'll ask Kevin more about
(35:34):
Jason Adam, who has I think been nothing more than
encouraging in his ramp up for the year. But I
think they just want to be safe because it's such
a long year, and you know, he I don't even
remember when the injury occurred, but it wasn't early in
the year. It was late in the year. So you're
only what six seven months from the injury, and I
(35:55):
guess according to Craig Stammon, he will pitch at some
point in April, is the expectation for the Padres. They
could still backdate his Iyel stint, which means he could
be available at some point early in April as opposed
to late in April. I always thought it was surprising
that the Padres were circling opening day for the return
of Jason Adam. Why you're coming off a serious injury,
(36:15):
you have a deep bullpen, and again you need to
navigate one sixty two and you have to be careful
with someone that is going to be a key piece
of the puzzle if you put the puzzle together. That's
who Jason Adam is. This isn't just a guy, This
isn't just like a nice piece. This is like the piece.
This is one of your lynch pins in your bullpen.
(36:36):
Like other than Mason Miller, I'm turning to Jason Adam
on a good day. Jason Adam at his best is
the second best reliever in your bullpen. So you're gonna
need him to be fully healthy, and he's made a
couple of appearances this spring. He's pitch well. I think
he appeared in two Cactus League games. He retired all
six batters he faced, So I mean he's kind of back,
(36:57):
but I guess not fully back. And remember the rig
of the regular season differ from spring training because you'll
never push it. In spring training, you're not throwing back
to back days. You're normally going to get multiple off
days between appearances. I mean you can you basically can
align it to work for the player, and the organization
(37:17):
can't do that in the regular season, Like if you're
going to be an eighth inning guy, you got to
be available back to back days or potentially three out
of every four games, and they probably just don't want
to put him in that situation this early. I mean,
seasons keep starting earlier and earlier. And do you want
Jason Adam March twenty eighth and twenty ninth, or September
twenty eighth and twenty ninth, or ideally October twenty eighth
(37:40):
and twenty ninth. So it makes sense. I think some
people might be discouraged because we were led down a
path where Jason Adam was starting the year on the
opening day roster. This happens a lot, I think with
the padres, where they tell you something that doesn't necessarily
come to fruition. But I don't think they were selling
us a fake bill of goods, is my point. I
think that if this was the postseason, he'd be available.
(38:00):
If this was September, he'd be available. But because it's
a one hundred and sixty two game season, and considering
the injury he's coming off, it's better to be safe
than sorry. So I understand. I thought when the injury happened,
I thought we were talking like, oh, maybe they'll get
him back at halfway point, you know, maybe they'll get
him back in June, you know, May, July, somewhere in there.
(38:23):
And now it's it's going to be April. Barring a setback,
it's going to be April. But again, this is a
This is a key piece of your team, and I
keep saying that with players like Joe Musgrove is a
key piece of your team. Now, it doesn't mean he
has to make thirty one starts and win twenty games.
That's that's not the point. But he he's a key piece,
(38:44):
and I would argue Jason Adam is probably a bigger
piece because the expectations for Adam are higher than Joe Musgrove.
But again, health is the number one factor in determining
the success of the season, not who's managing, not one
player having in off the charts better than average year
or career year. Health is the number one determining factor.
(39:07):
And that's why keeping Manny Machado fully rested is so crucial,
and getting Jason Adam fully healthy and Joe Muskrove bouncing
back from Tommy John and having Michael King look like
Michael King, which he hasn't really looked like this spring,
And normally I would never bring spring numbers into the conversation,
but because he's coming off injury, I think it's at
(39:27):
least part of that conversation with someone like Michael King.
But yeah, there's nothing more important than health. Like, yeah,
do I want to see Tatis hit forty home runs? Yeah,
but I wouldn't trade it for a player being out
all a year that's gonna play a key role. So
you're gonna need it all. You need Tatis hitting forty
home runs, but not at the expense of Jason Adam.
You need many Machado bouncing back and having a better
(39:49):
second half. But yes, not at the expense of Joe Musgrove.
We know injuries are a part of it. It's not
to overreact to any of them. All teams deal with
it to some extent. Some teams get hurt, hurt worse
than others. You just don't want to be that team.
You know, you want to be able to deal with injuries.
And they've added, you know, an amount of depth here recently,
(40:10):
even today, like a minor league signing of a veteran
reliever in Jose Leclerk. They've added back end rotation options
at least over the course of the last six weeks.
I think their bench is better than it was last year.
You have Ty Frantz, who's going to make this team.
Sudden Moon's song, I think is going to start the
year in the IL because he's been dealing with no
bleak and he hasn't been fully healthy. So I think
(40:33):
they have more depth. I don't know if they have
enough depth, but you could have all the depth in
the world that doesn't overcome dealing with injuries to your starters.
So first and foremost, you need to stay healthy or
at least healthy er, and hopefully the Padres are able
to do that. But again according to Kevin Acy, who
will Jonas coming up in five or six minutes, Jason
Adam is likely to start the year on the IL,
(40:56):
although he did he pitched today, he pitched today, but
is likely to start the year on the IL. All right,
So in the four o'clock hour, also, we're gonna give

now it's late March. I mean that's at six seven
weeks and that's a long time. So he's I'm sure
thrilled to be heading back home and then Opening Day
again is going to get underway on Thursday. It really
is a terrific pitching matchup. As Brnch's reference there in
the in the update, Tarik Schooble, you know who was

I thought an interesting talking point during the WBC because
he pitched and only made one appearance and he wants
to be ready for Opening Day, which is admirable. Here's
the thing, at the end of the day, Tarik Schooble
is as good as they come. I mean it's as
simple as that. You know, two we are essentially last year.
This guy has been a dominant force, whether it was
(03:20):
twenty twenty four, twenty twenty five. This is as good
of a pitcher as there is basically right now in
Major League Baseball. He's got a signed young, he's got
two sings. There's not a lot of guys with multiple
SI youngs in the primes of their career, and he's
still held. He's twenty nine. He's twenty nine. And then
you've got Nick Pavetta who had like a renaissance last
(03:41):
year in San Diego with Ruby Dieblo pitching for the
Padres in the first year of a four year deal,
which is really a two year deal because of an
opt down. They paid him like nothing last year and
he had an amazing year. So we talked about this earlier.
But you can't put too much in it. Of course,
it's one game. But would you like to play well? Yeah,
(04:03):
would you like to hit Schooble? Yeah? Is it something
that gives you confidence that if you fast forward six
months from now and you're facing elite starting pitching and
you can find a way to win, all of that
to me is a yes. With a team like San Diego,
that's a veteran team that's been in the postseason a lot,
but has had a lot of disappointments as well. In
the postseason, they haven't always played their best baseball against
(04:26):
the best teams. Detroit is a very good team as well,
that was in the postseason last year. So you know,
I'm not putting too much stock in it, but I
am saying you'd prefer, you know, you'd prefer the good
as a post the bad. This is the type of
series when you're facing what Framber Valdez and to reach Scooble.
If you do get out of the gates playing well,
(04:46):
that's encouraging. Now, last year's birthday started fourteen and three.
That was essentially their year in terms of how they
got to the postseason. And I'm not asking them to
start fourteen and three. That is not the point. And
I'm not saying they have to win Opening Day or
win this series against Detroit. I'm just saying it would
be nice to get off on the right foot after
the long spring training, facing a late starting pitching, having
(05:08):
Nick Pavet on the mound, and having Craigs Damin as
your first time manager.

It'd be nice, is what I would say. Yeah, it
could also be discouraging too, though. You know, some days
I wish they'd just have some guy making his major
league debut. Well, no, because they do horrible against those
guys too, But typically you'd want some guy that you
know is making his debut opposed to the ace, just
because you know what if they go out and you know,
(05:33):
only get three hits or something, then you know, it
might just kind of be discouraging to start the year
off on a you know, just a low offensive note
like that.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
But that's what I'm gonna use your line, and I
one hundred percent of growing we say, guys when I
when we get calls on Thursday or Friday, whenever it
is after Thursday. Let's say the two paths they lose
three to one or they win three one. Let's just
throw that out and it could be higher, it could
be anything. It's baseball. But let's say they lose three
to one and they have three hits and the only

run is scored on I don't know an error, you
know what I mean, Like, they just don't do anything
and they have three hits and they're all singles. You
know what I would say to everyone listening is relax.
If you have any strong opinion after that result against
Trek Scoob who had his two wee ra, then you're
don't outthink yourself, don't overthink it. Know that inevitably, over
(06:23):
the course of one sixty two there's thirty games are
thrown out, there's play thirty wins you're throwing out as well.
So yeah, it's true that you could leave Petco Park
on Thursday because you face t Rek Schouble and you
might leave and say man, that looked a little bit
like what we saw last year, which is where we
didn't have a great offense and we had just three
or four hits. It scored just one run or fewer
and we didn't win the game. But right it's too
(06:45):
early to have any opinion. I don't care if they
win ten nothing on Thursday or lose ten to nothing
on Thursday. I don't have an opinion on the team.
I'll have an opinion on the game, but I don't
have an opinion on the team based on what happens Thursday.

No, you can our deform an opinion maybe after the
series is over, after that.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
A little bit. But yeah, I mean it's it's it's
one game and then ultimately to your point, it's gonna
be one series. We have to remember as well that
listen once we get into the year. But Padres have
one of the best home field advantages in the sport.
They draw three million plus fans. They have routinely found
themselves contending to play in the postseason. They have been

in the postseason every year but in the last six years,
but they've been in four times. I think I have
the math on that right is at five and seven.
When is it twenty twenty two, twenty four to twenty five,
So what is that for the last six I think
they've been in for the last six. They're trying to
make it now five of the last seven years. My
point is like, I'll have a little bit of faith
(07:48):
in what aj Preller has built that I'm not going
to just completely sell off stock after I don't care
what they do in the homestand or truthfully in the
you know, you get the point. Yes, the old saying
would be, you can't win the pennant in April, but
you can lose it. You can't even lose pennants anymore.
Six teams are in the postseason the National League. Now, yes,
(08:10):
the worst team in the sport through April is not
making the playoffs. Would be my guess. The team to
start six and twenty six. They're not making the playoffs.
Padres aren't that team, and they might not start twenty
six and six. That's fine. They could start that's thirty
two games. They start sixteen and sixteen for example, they
were fourteen to three last year. The issue with last
(08:31):
year Brem was everyone had these high, high hopes out
of the gates. All of a sudden it became I
don't know if it was World Series or bust, but
it was postseason Iran, maybe Division title or bust. And
then they didn't fulfill that. They made the postseason but
didn't lift up to it. You start sixteen and sixteen, Yeah,
maybe people won't be thrilled overall with their performance and
they'll be a game out of a playoff spot at
(08:53):
sixteen and sixteen, thirty two games in. So that's all
you're trying to do. You just got to tread water.
The parts that's going to be most fascinating to watch
is what does their rotation actually look like when you
go through it like three times. Is Herman Marquez back
to being good? Is Walker Bueller healthy? Is Randy Vasquez improved?
Speaker 1 (09:13):
You know?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Is Joe Musgrove returning at some point in the next
couple of weeks. That's the part for me, Bran, and
then you'll get into all the position players in the lineup.
But that's the part to me that's probably most fascinating.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
I just want to see how though the starting rotation
is just gonna hold up yep, not necessarily, how they're
gonna do just are they gonna just physically gonna be.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Able to hold up, you know, how long?
Speaker 3 (09:37):
How long are they going to go before, you know,
one of them goes down and then we kind of
have to start. You know, we joked about whether it's
gonna be Bueller or Herman Marquez because we didn't think
that both of them would make the squad, but who
knows if one of them, if somebody goes down, they
might need both those guys.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
So for me, it's that's.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Like the reoccurring not theme, but reoccurring issue every single
year with the Padres is when is one of the
starters gonna go down? And you know, I'm interested to see.
I kind of wonder if they held off on announcing
the starter because they were kind of iffy about the

the arm fatigue that Paveta talked about. Was it last
week or like maybe a week and a half go
now yep, So I was kind of thinking maybe they
were kind of holding off on that because they didn't
want to go and you know, name a starter last
week and then have the arm fatigue actually be something
other than arm fatigue and then have them be like,
oh yeah, never mind, we're gonna go with this guy instead.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
It's gonna be an interesting year.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
You know, as long as they don't start that opening
weekend the way they did.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Like god, what was it?
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Almost fuss it five years ago when they opened against
the Dodgers, and like in the three games, it was
more than five years ago.

It feels like, yes, seven eight years ago when.

They got outscored like twenty eight to three in the
whole series. It was just but it was so bad
that it's always is going to stick out as like
kind of the precursor of what's to come.

I agree with you it there because what happens is
perception becomes reality. I would come on the radio, by
the way, if the Padres got swept in this weekend
series by the Tigers and didn't score a run, and
I wouldn't be selling season over. People would be telling
you that. Some people on social media would say, like,
this team ain't in and what's wrong? And everyone's got
to go and bring back Mike Shild and why do
you extend aj Preller and sell this team already? John?
(11:39):
You know Siler that that would be some of the
reaction I think. But it's a very very long year,
which has its advantages and its disadvantages. You know, sometimes
you wish it wasn't if the Padres were a football
team and started fourteen and three like they did last year.
You're playing, you think you're going to a super Bowl,
but they're a baseball team. Start fourteen to three and
(12:01):
then they came back to earth, and they really came
back to earth in that three game series against the
Cubs because they couldn't score. But all gets here's the thing.
This is the time of year where you should have
the optimism and the hopes and the excitement. There's no
reason not to. This is not Colorado, this isn't Miami.
This team has a chance to be good. I think
(12:21):
the team probably has a chance to be very good
and take this Fancraft stuff out of it for a moment.
So what so some projection site says they're supposed to
win eighty games, So someone says they only have a
one or two percent chance of winning the World Series.
That it's always like that. They were never going into
the year with a fifteen percent chance of winning the
World Series, and you know they were gonna win ninety
(12:42):
nine games and projected to win the division. It's always
uphill in San Diego. It's never downhill. It's always hard
in the NLS. You're always competing against big budgets like
the LA Dodgers, and it's like it just makes it
that much sweeter when you put together a season, which
hopefully they're able to do in twenty twenty six. I'm
I'm gonna discount this as long as possible. Fangrafts saying
(13:03):
they're gonna go seventy nine point six and eighty two
point four this year. Of course you can't do that,
but fangraft is essentially saying they're gonna go eighty and
eighty two with a one percent chance of winning the
division and a point six percent chance of winning the
World Series. I put that in a bulletin board opening day.
If I'm the Padres against to Reck Scooble. What is
the plan, by the way, for Manny Machado in twenty
(13:24):
twenty six? Will he finally get more rest? Is he
willing to do that or not? Kevin Acy has the
latest on that that will share with you on the

Manny Machado said, when asked by Kevin Ac about rest,
he said, I'll rest when I'm in the ground. Okay,
a famous line about you know I'll sleep it I'm
dead type line. And Craig Stalmon said confidently, according it's
Kevin A c oh yeah, he's gonna get more rest.

Craig Stammon also quoted saying he's no spring chicken anymore.
And we want the best for him. He wants the
best for himself, wants the best for the team. We
can make good decisions that way. With that in mind,
so styles make fights. The player can listen. They might
talk to Manny Machado on March twenty whatever, today is
twenty third, say Manny, here's our plan. We want you
(14:48):
to go from one hundred and fifty eight games. I'm
making to one forty eight. And here's what our plan is.
We're gonna sit you twice in April, and three times
in many, four times in June. Whatever it is. He
might say, you know what, great. All of a sudden
you get into it, though, and you need to win
a series, or you gotta grab a game, or you
have the right pitching matchup, you know, and all of
(15:09):
a sudden, he's not sitting anymore, and you're doing it.
And you're basically doing it by taking the bat out
of his hands, which again I think you can you
can pick your spots in doing that. But you get
into the second half of the year and you're fighting
to get in or fighting for a division or fighting
for a wild card spot. I just don't know how
easy it's gonna be to keep Machado from himself and
(15:30):
to keep Manny Machado, you know, not in a starting
lineup for the team.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
That's why you do it in the first half of
the year. Mostly just kind of think of it like
a you know, front loaded contract. You know they're gonna
they're gonna, you know, get a lot of the rest
days per se out in the first half of the year.
So then he's you know, quote a little fresher, you know,
for the second half of the season. So because I
(15:56):
don't think Manny's going to be in denial that you know,
he's getting older and he's not going to be able
to play you know, one hundred and fifty eight every year.
And well I shouldn't say that. He probably could play
one hundred and fifty eight out year, but it's he's
getting to the point where he shouldn't play all one
hundred and fifty eight, especially if they seriously, you know,
(16:17):
are talking about you know, making a move in the postseason,
then they need him to be as fresh as possible.
And you know, we kind of not ripped on Hilt,
but we kind of questioned last year. You know, dude,
you gott to ever give Manny a day off almost
to the point where we're almost you know, we're joking about,
you know, if Shilty was scared of Manny to where
(16:38):
he didn't want to bench him because he was afraid
man he was going to yell at him. So you know,
I I think it's something that it needs to happen,
and I think he'll be beneficial for the team. But yeah,
to your point of, you know, if we're in August
and we're in the middle of a pennant race, you know,
we can't really just go, oh, well, you know, Manny,
is this your tenth game?
Speaker 1 (16:59):
You know that was our deal.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Every ten games you're gonna sit I don't just do
it in the front half of the year, you know,
and then so then he'll just be fresher for the
second half.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Yeah, I mean, would I would agree with that idea, Like,
listen the reason to sit him, Brent. Potentially He's usually
been a strong finisher to a year. Kevin writes about this,
but last year, listen to this final forty five games.
This guy is holding on for dear life. He hit
two oh six in the final forty five games with
(17:29):
an on base plus slugging of six thirteen. So you know,
was he not healthy? Was it just the fact that
he's not a spring chicken anymore? Do use Craig Damon's term.
I think it's probably more health at that point than
it was anything else. But like, you need to prevent
that from replicating itself again. You can't have Machado heading
(17:52):
into the postseason hitting two oh six over the final
forty five games, like for a number of reasons, A
for your team and B for your chances in the
post as well, So they'll be a plan. But the
famous Tyson line, everyone's got a plan until they get
punched in the face. You know, if you start, here's
the ideal scenario for me, here's the ideal scenario. If
(18:15):
you get off to a good start like they did
last year, and it doesn't have to be fourteen and three,
but if you get off to a good enough start now,
it gives you cushion to navigate. But anytime you get
off to a bad start, you're always chasing. I go
back to Bob Melvins last year, twenty twenty three, and
he's like, I'd like to get these guys off their
feet or give him a blow, but we're we're not
playing well, So I can't justify not playing my best
(18:37):
players and the team isn't playing well. To me, it's
a you gotta have a plan. Like Dodgers have a plan.
They know what to do with the rotation. They can
sit someone for six weeks for the betterment of September
and October. Padres don't necessarily have that luxury, but they
need to have a plan that is executed with Machado.
I would be shocked if Machado didn't get more off
(18:58):
days this year. And you can't. You can't just say, well,
it's dhing every day, so he's getting off days. No,
he's gonna need some true off days in there as well.
He'll get more. The question is how many more will
he get this year, because it's probably against his wishes
truthfully to give him more off days.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
I'm kind of wondering just because of how I'm trying
to think of how to phrase this. Now I lost
my train of thought. I hate it when that happens.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Oh, I remember now, you know, I've always been saying,
for you know, past like two or three seasons, that
I wish they would take the earlier, like the first
two months more. I'll say more seriously for lack of
a better term, not that they're not taking it serious,
but you know, so then when we get two months
in the season, we're not automatically in like some twelve
(19:57):
game hole behind the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
And to your point of you know, if we can
get out to a decent start, it will take off
some of the pressure of you know, saying, oh, we
can't bench Manny, we got to leave him out there.
So maybe if they approached the early early part of
the season with a little more urgency opposed to the
(20:20):
the old, you know cliche of oh it games in May,
they don't matter or they don't mean anything. It doesn't
matter if we lost this series to the Rangers in
May because it's May and you know, nothing, nothing that
happens in May really matters. Well, maybe if they take
the earlier months a little more serious than that, will yes,
and like you said, they'll give them leeway then to go, hey,
(20:43):
you know, we're not you know, twenty games behind first
place here at the beginning of June or in the
middle of June. So it gives us more room to
you know, tip Manny in this you know series against
you know, Seattle or somebody like that, opposed to just going, yeah,
you know, we're we're still chasing them, and now you know,
we don't. We can't really afford to sit him again
(21:03):
because you know, we can't afford to lose another game
and fall another game back.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
Yeah again, I think they'll they'll have a plan, But
how does the team perform and how does that impact
the plan? Is my question, and I'm with you. If
your six games up in a playoff spot, it's gonna
be a lot easier to sit them a random afternoon
in July as opposed to being three games out of
a playoff spot in a random afternoon in July. We'll

State Football General Managers' practice somehow underway on the MESA
no offseason when it comes to STSU Athletics. They'll play
a spring football game in early May at San Diego
State and they'll be practicing about fifteen practices over the
next five or six weeks, and again spring football starting
(22:15):
earlier today at San Diego State. So Caleb always appreciates
you taking time for us. When I think about like
day one of anything, Like in school, it was always
like you get your syllabus, you know, on day one.
It wasn't like an intense day one of class. What's
day one of spring football like under Shawn Lewis. And
thanks for hopping on absolutely well.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
First off, appreciate you guys for having me.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Always always a pleasure.
Speaker 5 (22:38):
But yeah, day one is always funny because it's so
much more about evaluating the energy at practice than it
is you know, the mas, the x's and those, because again,
everything is always going to be a little bit of
learning on day one. But it's always a good sign
to leave the practice field and you know, recapping with
the recruits and they're like, oh my gosh, you guys
(22:58):
are flying around. It was so in my mind I'm
sitting here like, gosh, that could have been fixed. That
could have been fixed. But all in all, the guys
were flying around, everyone was having fun, people staying healthy,
So it was all good.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Obviously for ice tech fans. I think, you know, you
always start the conversation with the quarterback and the good
news for San Diego status, you've got a returning quarterback
in Jayden Denegal. Now we know he was not fully
healthy last year since had surgery to repair his shoulder.
What are the you know, what's the expectation here for
Jaden entering his second year in the system. Obviously you've
(23:31):
got a deep quarterback room as well, but it's got
to be good to have a quarterback returning to a
system that he's now familiar with.
Speaker 5 (23:38):
Absolutely, you know, we're looking for Jayden to really take
that next leap in his leadership and continuing to elevate
and all those steps in his games. But again, to
have a returning quarterback, especially at this level where a
lot of the best guys in our conference are always
looking for the next spot. You know, Jayden was someone
who you know, had had seen everything, had one national championshapion,
(24:00):
and he wanted to be the guy, wanted to be
the quarterback here and again it's close to home for him.
So to keep a local kid like that home and
someone that wants to be here, you know, it's so
exciting to see what he's going to do to elevate
his game, because again, he's got all the tools, he's got,
all the experience. He's a guy that legitimately could have
an NFL future if he if he takes these next
(24:21):
steps right, So, really really excited for him to continuing
to elevate and really you know, soak into the system
year two and find a way to just take take
jumps in every step of his game.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Literally has a national championship ring from his time at
the University of Michigan. Incredibly as well. You know, last year,
I think we saw a lot of talent on the
outside with the receivers, and then I look at some
of the work that you know, you and the staff
and Sean have done to just continue to just add
depth to that room. There's a lot of key players
(24:55):
back when I think about obviously you know the Donovan
Browns and the jail and Hawkins, and you know all
the pieces that you have as well, and then what
you've added to it. Can you take us through that
wide receiver room head against the year?
Speaker 5 (25:08):
Absolutely? So that was one of the number one key
plans of attacks that we had in the porl is
because I believe, you know, I've been around a lot
of great play callers, but I believe Coach Lewis is
one of the best play callers in the country, if
not the best, and he just needs as many chef pieces,
as many toys as possible to kind of put to use.
(25:29):
And you started to see at the back half of
last year, you know, had a couple injuries and the
depths just wasn't where it needed to be. So we
wanted to make sure almost leave no doubt, you know,
we returned every significant contributor in that room, but we
also added to it to where it doesn't matter if
there's injuries, it doesn't matter if young guys end up elevating,
like we think we're gonna regardless, we're gonna have the
(25:50):
most dynamic room in the Pac twelve. That's the plan,
all right.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
So Caleb Davis, san Diego State's football general manager with
us right now in San Diego Sports seven sixty again,
spring practice underway on the MESA. As AZ Tech fans know,
San Diego State had one of the best defenses in
the country last year, but obviously a ton of change
coming out of whether it's graduation or portal. Some key contributors,
(26:14):
guys like Trey White, Owen Shambliss no longer with San
Diego State, obviously, Chris Johnson, Bryce Phillips, and I'm failing
to mention a number of others as well. What's the
hope with Spring in terms of having a feel and
an identity for replacing some of these key pieces with
some of these new pieces that you've added over the
last handful of months.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
Absolutely, I think the number one key thing was, you know,
having coached Somemler, coach Dimitri Summler, be able to re
embody that room where he's been here a number of
years and to get to retain him as the defensive coordinator,
have his shot to run it. I think that piece is.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
So key for continuity.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
But then the other piece that people forget about is,
you know, we believe we have all conference players at
all three levels of the defense that are returning from
last year, between you know, a Brady Nassau on the
d line room, Tonald Lutoolie, who's who has been a
two time All Conference player, and Dale Sean Staley who
made the choice to return to the team after entering
his name into the portal. So with those three pieces
(27:14):
of continuity, along with continuity and play calling, now it's
just having the pieces that we went out and obtained
in the portal to come gel together as a unit,
and Day one was really really promising where we saw
some flashes with some of the new guys and it's
just really really exciting to have that blend of yeah,
obviously there's the new, but there's such a core stability
(27:35):
that's there at all three levels that now is just
how do we play off of it. How do we
get these new pieces to come together and again gel
together as a defense, because as everyone knows defense, it
doesn't matter who your best one is, it's about who
your worst one is, because one guy.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Can ruin a play.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
So can we get all eleven guys to fire like
we did last year? And Day one was a really
really promising sign of that.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
To switch back to offense for a moment because I
didn't mention Bert Emanuel Junior, who really showed flashes throughout
the course of last year on the MESA primarily at quarterback,
including in the bowl game for STSU. He's going to
spend more time at receiver. I don't know if we'll
still get some snaps at quarterback or not, but I
mean this is just a playmaker. We know the lineage
his father spent a long time in the NFL as
(28:22):
a receiver. What will it take for Bert to make
that transition, because we know once the football is in
his hands, he could be one of the most explosive
players on the team. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:32):
Well, that's the thing with him too, is like everything's
a mindset to be able to shift from quarterback to
receiver and make plays there. You know something that I
don't know if everyone knows, like that was his decision
to come to us and say, hey, I love my
time here. I know I'm the backup quarterback, but let
me go be a playmaker like I know I can be,
and we were all fired up as a staff. So
he's a kid that again does all the little things
(28:55):
right to where every single day he's out on the
jugs machine getting extra work in, and every single day
he's working on his craft, and he's already reshaped his
body to where you know, a year ago he's built
to play the quarterback position, and you see it come
out and flashes, especially against North Texas in the bowl game.
But to be able to spend a full off season
really training in that position, I'm really really excited to
(29:18):
see what he's able to do to elevate that room.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Caleb David, San Diego State Football GM with us right
now in San Diego Sports seven sixty, so you have
a better feel for this than most where is San
Diego State in terms of a resources perspective. You're entering
this new league right obviously with Oregon State and Washington
State and a number of schools from the Mountain West.
How do you feel about the resources you have obviously
(29:43):
and putting this roster together and putting you in a
position to compete from year one in the new PAC twelve.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
Yeah, Well, first off, I'd be remiss to say like
everything we were able to do through the portal through
roster retention, you know, we were able to keep twenty
one out of twenty five our significant contributors, which is
anyone that played at least two hundred reps for US,
which by my account's top ten in the country. And
then we were able to bring in the best portal
class in the conference. And none of that's possible without
(30:12):
the support of the community. And I know the finish
the Climb campaign was so vital to that success. So
again I can't thank the community, the alumni, the donors,
the booster base enough for what they've done to help us.
And now I think the last piece to that is,
how do we continue to pack the stadium? How do
(30:32):
we sell out season tickets? How do we sell out
snap Dragon Stadium? And that's the last final step to
where we've done so many great things to get us
to the nine win mark last year, but how do
we do things at an elite level every single aspect
and really sell out snap Dragon Stadium and now make
that push to not just participate in the PAC twelve,
(30:53):
but to dominate the PAC twelve as leaders in the conference.
Speaker 2 (30:55):

new PAC twelve. I think I've asked you this before,
but I'd love to get your two cents just on
how the schedule shakes out. We've got this brand new
league where there's the flex game at the end of
the conference schedule. In addition, you look at the non

conference and you've got James Madison coming here, which is
pretty crazy. They were just in the playoff. A road
game that's drivable obviously against UCLA at the Rose Bowl.
How does the schedule shake up in your opinion overall?
Speaker 5 (31:29):
Oh, I absolutely love it because I think you look
at the non conference historical success. Obviously we all know
UCLA right up the road, but even James Madison coming
off a playoff year, but even a game away at Toledo,
who year in and year out, is competing for MAC championships.
So I really really like the fact that we're tested
(31:50):
early and often, and then we're going to be able
to utilize that to kind of build momentum going into
the PAC twelve schedule. So I'm fired up with it,
I think, just for from a home game perspective, this
has got to be one of the most packed schedules
in recent history, obviously since my time here. But I'm
really really excited to see what we're able to do
(32:12):
to come together, not just as a team, but as
a whole San Diego community and really make twenty twenty
six the year of the Aztec.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
Last question for you, Kal before you go, and we
appreciate your time, is twenty twenty six like completely new
slate or in some respect is it a little bit
of unfinished business where you get to nine wins, you're
a win away from hosting a conference title game. You're
in overtime, actually double overtime in that game where a
win gets you into a conference title game. Is that
(32:41):
at all part of the story in twenty twenty six
or does the slate completely wipe clean?
Speaker 5 (32:47):
You know, I think the motto stays the same. But again,
if you dwell too much on the pass, you're bound
to forget about the president. So I think a big
piece of that is understand our history. Go back and
for all the new portal kids, like go watch that
New Mexico game, or even two years ago, go watch
that Washington State game where where we had it at home,
(33:09):
and understand the history, but then wipe it clean and
say no, this year's new year. So I think there's
a sense of both, like you got to understand the history.
You got to know the history, but then you've got
to use it to strive to where Again, the MADA
for next year, more than anything, is just.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Leave no doubt.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
You know, you leave your conference championship aspirations in the
hopes of whether it's computer rankings or whatnot. And again,
you don't get to make that decision but we go
win that game, then none of that matters anyway. So now,
how do we understand the history and how do we
just leave no doubt as we go into next season
and really dominate the first year of the PAC twelve.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
It'll be here before we know it. Again, Spring practice
is underway and again football season tickets on sale now

is now suggesting that Jason Adam, the terrific setup reliever
for the Padres that had that crazy freak injury late
last year, the achilles, he was expected to be available
opening day. It is now expected he will start this
season on the IL. So we'll ask Kevin more about
(35:34):
Jason Adam, who has I think been nothing more than
encouraging in his ramp up for the year. But I
think they just want to be safe because it's such
a long year, and you know, he I don't even
remember when the injury occurred, but it wasn't early in
the year. It was late in the year. So you're
only what six seven months from the injury, and I
(35:55):
guess according to Craig Stammon, he will pitch at some
point in April, is the expectation for the Padres. They
could still backdate his Iyel stint, which means he could
be available at some point early in April as opposed
to late in April. I always thought it was surprising
that the Padres were circling opening day for the return
of Jason Adam. Why you're coming off a serious injury,
(36:15):
you have a deep bullpen, and again you need to
navigate one sixty two and you have to be careful
with someone that is going to be a key piece
of the puzzle if you put the puzzle together. That's
who Jason Adam is. This isn't just a guy, This
isn't just like a nice piece. This is like the piece.
This is one of your lynch pins in your bullpen.
(36:36):
Like other than Mason Miller, I'm turning to Jason Adam
on a good day. Jason Adam at his best is
the second best reliever in your bullpen. So you're gonna
need him to be fully healthy, and he's made a
couple of appearances this spring. He's pitch well. I think
he appeared in two Cactus League games. He retired all
six batters he faced, So I mean he's kind of back,
(36:57):
but I guess not fully back. And remember the rig
of the regular season differ from spring training because you'll
never push it. In spring training, you're not throwing back
to back days. You're normally going to get multiple off
days between appearances. I mean you can you basically can
align it to work for the player, and the organization
(37:17):
can't do that in the regular season, Like if you're
going to be an eighth inning guy, you got to
be available back to back days or potentially three out
of every four games, and they probably just don't want
to put him in that situation this early. I mean,
seasons keep starting earlier and earlier. And do you want
Jason Adam March twenty eighth and twenty ninth, or September
twenty eighth and twenty ninth, or ideally October twenty eighth
(37:40):
and twenty ninth. So it makes sense. I think some
people might be discouraged because we were led down a
path where Jason Adam was starting the year on the
opening day roster. This happens a lot, I think with
the padres, where they tell you something that doesn't necessarily
come to fruition. But I don't think they were selling
us a fake bill of goods, is my point. I
think that if this was the postseason, he'd be available.
(38:00):
If this was September, he'd be available. But because it's
a one hundred and sixty two game season, and considering
the injury he's coming off, it's better to be safe
than sorry. So I understand. I thought when the injury happened,
I thought we were talking like, oh, maybe they'll get
him back at halfway point, you know, maybe they'll get
him back in June, you know, May, July, somewhere in there.
(38:23):
And now it's it's going to be April. Barring a setback,
it's going to be April. But again, this is a
This is a key piece of your team, and I
keep saying that with players like Joe Musgrove is a
key piece of your team. Now, it doesn't mean he
has to make thirty one starts and win twenty games.
That's that's not the point. But he he's a key piece,
(38:44):
and I would argue Jason Adam is probably a bigger
piece because the expectations for Adam are higher than Joe Musgrove.
But again, health is the number one factor in determining
the success of the season, not who's managing, not one
player having in off the charts better than average year
or career year. Health is the number one determining factor.
(39:07):
And that's why keeping Manny Machado fully rested is so crucial,
and getting Jason Adam fully healthy and Joe Muskrove bouncing
back from Tommy John and having Michael King look like
Michael King, which he hasn't really looked like this spring,
And normally I would never bring spring numbers into the conversation,
but because he's coming off injury, I think it's at
(39:27):
least part of that conversation with someone like Michael King.
But yeah, there's nothing more important than health. Like, yeah,
do I want to see Tatis hit forty home runs? Yeah,
but I wouldn't trade it for a player being out

We know injuries are a part of it. It's not
to overreact to any of them. All teams deal with
it to some extent. Some teams get hurt, hurt worse
than others. You just don't want to be that team.
You know, you want to be able to deal with injuries.
And they've added, you know, an amount of depth here recently,

even today, like a minor league signing of a veteran
reliever in Jose Leclerk. They've added back end rotation options
