and a half point favorite for Tennessee.

You know, I made the point yesterday. I guess if
all things were equal, I probably still would have preferred
one Cinderella. Like again, these are good matchups still right, Well,
when you put Michigan State in Ucon on a floor,
give me a breaker. Saint John's and Duke these will
be massive ratings. By the way, the highest rated game
of the first two rounds, no surprise, was Kansas Saint John's.

The New York market Kansas as a brand and a
great rate amazing Darren Peterson played here.

It had over ten million viewers, so a massive number
for a second round game. These matchups. The funny thing
is is like CBS and Turner are gonna get the ratings.
As the NCAA Tournament transitions away from Cinderellas, you're gonna
get the benefit of high ratings, which then leads you
down the path of saying, well, the tournament must be
really healthy because the ratings are really really good. But

I think to the average college basketball fan, they still
like the idea of just some random fourteen beating a
three on Day one. I don't think they want the
fourteen in the final four by and large, but I
do think they'd prefer to have like the shoe fit,
so to speak, on a Cinderella. And we're now two
years basically removed from Cinderella's for me, since the Badger's

choked and they're there one team that was basically upset
by UH and you know, the Assets didn't make it.
For me, I can still appreciate, you know, watching the
blue Bloods and stuff like that play, you know, great basketball.
But for me, the big difference is I just don't
have anybody to root for. I'm watching it and I'm

hoping I get good games, but it's not like, you know,
if there was.

Uh, what was the the team that had like the
old nun.

As, they're like Chicago, Oh yeah, you know, but there's
no like loyal of Chicago that's like, oh okay, I'm
going to root for those guys because they're the obvious
underdog in this you know, that sea of blue bloods.

It is a great point that you have when when
your college is knocked out, which a lot a lot
of people are by.

So there's something to root for in the Cinderellas. Now,
I do think we've seen to your point about the
blue bloods. A it draws Michigan State in Yukon is
going to be a highly rated game tonight Saint John's too.
I mean, you're talking about massive brands, massive star coaches,
guys on those teams that are going to the NBA
or you're gonna be seeing at the next level. But

even we've seen the NFL has always been the biggest,
but we've seen the explosion of gambling and that has
really helped ratings across all sports. Even the spreads we
read off outside of Alabama or I keep saying Alabama
Michigan being nine and a half point favorite.

From a gambling perspective, it's fun when we're sitting here
talking about you could pick some upsets tonight and that's
pretty pretty slight spreads. There's a lot to get into there.
It is funny we see Cinderella. But at some point,
I mean Saint Peter's unbelievable three games, they got destroyed
in the Elite eight. They at some point these teams
run out and from a fan of the game, seeing

a twenty point spread in the Elite eight, which is
what Vegas is telling you that, but this team is
so much better than that team. Isn't always the most
entertaining game to me?

Yeah, I just I do wonder. I think it's too
premature to be like Cinderella is dead, you know, like
this people draw these hard lines, right or like you
or the idea that you can't compete with a twenty
million dollar budget. But I do tell myself this, at
the end of the day, there's like twelve players on
Kansas and then there's like twelve players on San Diego State.

As in Kansas can only have It's not like you
can have all the talent.

You can only have like ten minutes. And by the way,
nobody then knows what's going to happen.

There are injuries, there are circumstances that play out, and
even back in the day fifty years ago, Kansas still
had all the advantages over.

I think the NIL has helped more spread it out,
a little spread like a program like San Diego State,
which forty years ago wasn't kidding the top of fruits

you're not. If you're Wisconsin, maybe you're not Duke or
North Carolina, but Wisconstantine, say, are big programs that people

Like I'm with you on we haven't seen the Cinderellas,
but this whole narrative that Cinderella's are dead. Sianna pushed
Duke to the limit, Furman pushed Yukon to the limit,
like Wesa. Wright State pus Virginia to the limit fourteen
versus three, And I know they didn't end up winning
those games, but it's not like they're getting beat by forty,
and it just I'm with Danio. You see the difference

Sianna's starters outplayed Duke starters. The bench for Duke is
you know, a won that out for them, because the
bench for Cianna is not even on the same page.
But I am curious if this becomes just a thing
going forward or if this is.

Kind of a two year anomaly. I think it's just
more of an anomaly. I think that they're gonna come
back eventually, because you know, you have to remember, yes
to Sammy's point, Eventually, their magic sort of fades away
once to get to like the Elite eight and like
the Final four. But we still have these, you know,

those rare situations where remember Butler was like two inches
away from a half court shot of winning the national
champion or winning the national championship. So, you know, I
think it can still happen, at least in basketball. Football
there's no chance in hell, but basketball we've seen that.

You know, you can be a mid major.

And just have one elite player that gets hot during
the tournament and you can ride them all the way
through the tournament. You know, look at Steph, you know,
Kurry Davidson and you know, uh Carmelo at Syracuse. You know,
you can just have that one player in basketball just
take over. So that's going to keep them alive. Yeah, no,

I would agree with that. And again there's to your point.
On football, it is a different game. And by the way,
it's been like a close system by in large four forever.
I mean, there wasn't even a path to like a
national championship until recently with the playoffs.

The other thing that's ins thing right now with college.

Basketball is you've got like these marquee brands looking for
a head coaches North Carolina like arguably the best job
in the history of the sport. Shoot Kansas theoretically could
come open. Bill Stuff could retire.

I don't think he will. He's not far off and
he's not.

More kinda down the other day. But still, I mean,
right after I could see it, it happens.

It's interesting like back in the day you was just
watching the NCAA tournament and that would be good enough.
And now it's like this player intends to enter the
portal and that player like as the as the like
championship is playing out, there's still all these other stories
that are playing out as well, like North Carolina's head
coach situation. All these players in the portal, where are
they gonna land? It's just different, and.

I think again, it's fun, Like we could have Arizona
Michigan in the final four. And I know some people go,
I don't excuse me, I don't care about one seeds,
but Arizona Michigan might be the best game we could
get on the docket, you know.

Like that's taking one seeds and taking guys who were
seeing at the next level. To me, it's just a
little bit more interesting. Bran, I totally get your point
about having a team to roof for like that that
is something and it is fun when there is one team.

Could be Iowa, But I don't know if you play
in the Big ten, are you really that much of
a Cinderella? You know, it's kind of hard to you're

just think the final four will be fun because I
feel like we're going to get the four best teams
versus a couple of teams that you're like, they really
don't deserve to be here, and they get run out

million viewers is not because they have fifty million fans.
It's because they've got ten million fans and fifty million

be on the field coming up tonight at six forty.

I was talking to some Padres fans just about like
what we talked about earlier, which is like, oh my gosh,
we were so excited for this game and now here

it's like so you kind of like ruined my day,

My point, like the dichotomy is it's not fair to

overreact to it, but it is fair to be like,
oh my gosh, I had so many more expectations for
today than the way it played out. It's like you
build your whole day around it. You take a day
off work, you're spending your time and money. It's a
beautiful day, you just packed it, and then all of
a sudden, like by the time you even have your
your hot dog and beer and you get in your seat,
it's for nothing. I mean, I think most people were

in their seat it's opening day, but like by the
time you look up, I mean we were on the
air around that time where I was with Alan yesterday
and it's four to nothing, and it's like all the
wind is taken out of your sales. I don't want
to see that repeat tonight. Like that's the last thing
anyone should want to see tonight. Obviously, of course, if
you're a Poddres fan, like, just give me a game
where they're competitive and allow that we've spent so much

time of offseason talking about their bullpen. I want to
see the bullpen used the way hopefully it's going to
be used all year long. Which is in like a
close game, either with a lead or in a tie
or down a run. That's what I hope to see
here tonight. Again, nobody can predict where they're gonna win
or lose this game. I just need a much more
competitive game.

It was also, I think coming off the WBC where
it was fun seeing competitive baseball because we usually get
that in October, we get that in so much of
the regular season. Can be a Tuesday night in July
where you know you're on the road or something.

Off vibe, a playoff major League baseball vibe, and then
to see the patters come out and just kind of

and the players that weren't. It was kind of like
my analogy would be teams and players in the NFL

can tell who the teams are that said everybody, and
who the teams are that played, everybody, the playoffs teams
and everything else.

then what's gonna happen with your rotation? Like you're gonna
need Nick Paveda. But so they free up this money,
right because you Darbish is on the restricted list. But

it's kind of a not so fast my friend's situation
because Kevin ac has been reporting and he's got some
quotes yesterday from Aja Preller when he spoke with the
media of Preller basically saying, well, we accounted for Darvish's
money coming off in some form or fashion. We didn't
know if it was a retirement or restricted list, but
we knew the money was coming off. So according to

Kevin and we can follow up with him more coming
up at three point thirty in about ten minutes. But
per Kevin, it doesn't sound like this is really adding
payroll for Preller right, doesn't sound like all of a
sudden because Darvish is on the restricted list, you can
go out and sign Lucas Giolito because they freed up
all this money. That makes sense to me that this
isn't some surprising thing for the Potters, like, oh, we

just found twenty million dollars. I think the plan all
along was they knew they'd get some payroll relief, and
they've built their roster even knowing they were going to
get that payroll relief.

Well, and you think with Giolito where the Pottery should
be interested in him, because it's been concern about starting
pitching so far, concern already with Nick Pavetti yesterday.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
You wonder if Lucas Giolito.

Does he want a long term contract, because if it's
gonna be a one year deal around the league, the
Pottery should jump at that and try to go get
a you know, a very solid star starting pitcher.

But you wonder what the sale of the team.

Kevin Ecy was on our show the other day, kind
of hinted that maybe this thing may next couple months,
this thing's going to be done. I mean, is are
are they so reluctant to tie out money in a
contract even though would one hundred percent help the team
this year because they're close to a deal on something.

Right, Yeah, that's gonna be interesting here. So Kevin said
today in his newsletter, was you Darvish's decision basically to
I don't even know what it is. It's not a retirement,
but the decision he's made financially is how the Padres
re signed Michael King. So like they already took those
dollars and reallocated them to King. And by the way,
(18:18):
they didn't have those many that much money from Darvish,
but they said, hey, we're getting fifteen or twenty here
from Darvish, let's spend twenty five on King. So with
that knowledge from Kevin, I think that's all you need
to know. Like they've already spent it is the point.
It's like anything in life. You know, when you get
a when you get a bump in salary, this is
what most people do when they get a bumping salary.

When they get a bumping salary, they just spend the
additional money they're now earning very rarely are you saving
that money? That's what I see here with the Padres,
like they were already spending the money on darbish, like,
oh well, now we have fifteen million to spend, let's
go use it elsewhere. And they did, and they spent
more money on Michael King. So my point is this,
if there is a change in ownership, maybe they get

you know, maybe that's beneficial at some point this year.
I'm not exactly sure how, but it gives them a
little bit more flexibility. But we're in season now and
they don't have the same options they would have.

Do you think on the Lucas Giolito note right, if
King goes out there tonight and is not performing well
and maybe you get Pavetta and King a second start
they're not performing well, do you think that incentivizes them
to go get him despite the fact that you Darvish's
money is not now an added bonus which a lot
of people thought they were gonna be, or is this

kind of the pottery is gonna roll with what they have.

This is Kevin today on CUE. As for free agents
starting pitcher Lucas Giolito, who remains unsigned, the price would
need to come down significantly. Even then, the most optimistic
thing anyone with the Padres would say about the chance
they could sign him is that it is not zero.
So nobody's saying like, hey, we're on the phone with
him right now working on terms.

It's like we don't have the money. Like if it
comes to a lot and.

Circumstances change, maybe, but it sounded like they don't have
the money at least right now to land Lucas Giolido.
It's it seems almost too easy or too good to
be true. What's gonna happen is Brent's made this point,
maybe you've made this point. Someone's gonna get hurt, and
then that team is going to sign Lucas Giolto, and
that there'll be someone hurt in the next thirty days,
a prominent pitcher, hopefully not with the Padres, but in baseball.

And then the GM calls, the agent says, all right,
we need Lucashieldo.

it and seen it play out and written about it

Well, my biggest takeaway is like I arrived here today
excited to see Michael King, excited for like a turn
through the rotation, another turn through the rotation, getting through,
say the Boston series into the Pittsburgh Series, so that
we can start to make some judgments that actually matter.

Yes, yesterday was perfect.

For going up.

You know, told just so and look I did it
a little bit too right, Like we were concerned. And
then the number one starter, the one guy that you're like,
or one of the two maybe three guys that you
were like, hey, they're going to do okay or you
you know, they need to do okay and make Paveeta
got blown up. And so it was kind of like
perfect in a bad way for podres and Potters fans

just to be able to talk about, Yeah, this is
a concern. We've been talking about it during spring and
during the off season, and the Potterys know it and
what are they going to do about it? Well, that's
why I want to see you get through a turn,
two turns through the rotation and see what happens. Also,
you know, not to say that you can't or should

it be through a Scoobal or fran Er Valdez. But also,
you know, let them face a few horse pictures and
let's see what this offense is about.

I'm glad you mentioned that Kevin Asy is with us
right now, and I think you've written about this. It's
one thing to say, hey, it's hard to beat elite
starting pitching, and that's factually true. I mean, for example,
Scoobl's won multiple cy Youngs, so it's not like anyone
is doing anything against him, including the Padres yesterday. But
wouldn't you agree when you faced schooble Valdez who Logan
Webb's coming up, Paul Skeens, I don't know about Crochet,

but just a general point at some point along the
way and we'll give it time. But like they've invested
a billion dollars in their lineup, they're gonna have to
hit some good pitching along the way as well.

Right, Yeah, it was one thing that they did, you know,
fairly well for Spurts under my shell, was find a
way to win, right, And so they didn't yesterday and
they were down for zero from the start, and then
when they failed to get a guy at least one
guy home after having person third with one out in

was different because of his health. And I'm just looking
at these numbers. I didn't watch any of it. You
watched some of it, you know, ten point one ninety
and all the indicators are not good obviously, Is that
at all part of the story heading into snine or none.

Yes, in that it means that we're wondering now guess what,
as you know, if it had been a one to
two era, then it would be out the window based
on what he did tonight, right, But the fact is
based on last year, based on what the spring was,
based on the home runs. And I know it's Arizona,
but still, you know, I watched a couple of games
where the Pottery scored like one run, So that means

the other team wasn't giving up a lot of home runs.
So Arizona doesn't just like the ball, doesn't, you know,
go out of there on a trampoline. And Michael King
gave up a lot of bumps and he was like
seven maybe it was six. It wasn't a good spring.
There are a lot of mistakes. Now, is he working
on stuff?

Like is the real work they're done in the bullpen?
A lot of times it is, especially a guy who's

seen Nick Castiano start any of this surprising or not

Well, ty France has faced Aboud like twenty six times
in the in the Al West and it's actually, I

So yeah, like you're right, they weren't. They weren't a

like that's going to be if that's a complete one

eighty right. Not to say he's a better manager, that's
not the point. But Craig Stammond, what he's going to
say to the media is going to be a lot
different than what Mike shild was saying to the media
based on one day.

It is, and I think there's a I think there's
a learning curve at some point like where maybe it
won't always be this open, but it might be because
as you and I talked about, I think lass on
Monday or I think it was Monday. This week's kind
of a weird one for me. I don't remember what

But anyway, so we talked about the confidence that he
has and the cachet that he has with players, and
he is he is and he knows or he feels
like he knows, you know, he's when he has condition
in something, that's what it's going to be. And I
think that's, you know, really good, especially for a rookie manager.
Now he also is learning on the fly, so I

can't say that it'll always be this way, but you
are spot on, and here's why it matters, and that's
why I wrote about today in the newsletter. If anyone
really noticed, I didn't mention a word about other people,
did not media. I'm talking fans who noticed, you know,
I think you guys asked me about it.

I did not mention a word about Mike Schilt and
how he treated me or the media until he left,
and then it became a part of the story, A
small part of the story. H you know, the way
he treats everybody, basically it'spt players. And that's because I

something about how they then do their job or how
they treat other people.

And you just listen to some of these quotes and
you go, wow, not does Greg Stalmmon have the confidence.

Stalmon is confidence. And also Craig Salmon's already said it
to the players, So like, that's why it matters. And I,
like you said, I don't know if you'll give be
a good manager, but his relationship with the players is
strong enough, and he is strong enough and comfortable enough
that he's not afraid to say.

What really to the rest of us is just pretty obvious.

But if you're worried about whose.

Wife is reading something, or what player is or you

then you're paranoid and you're you're paralyzed basically, then you

Yeah, that's good perspective. That's really good. Last one for you, Kevin,
would be just on. I guess my one takeaway yesterday
in defeat was by getting Paveta to not get knocked
out in the first inning. Maybe it gave you more
of a shot in games two and three, if that
makes sense because you don't have to cover eight innings,
have like three guys down for you know, the second

game of the third game of the series. Like, what
do you think the plan is for Michael King and
his first start again with last year the way it ended,
Like how cautious will they be? And then I would
assume if they're tied or ahead, they'll just unload, you know,
the A team so to speak of their bullpen here tonight.

Yeah, I mean what he threw ninety one pitches, and
so I would say this that it would depend on
like the score. Let's say it's six zero, right, Michael
King did not need to go more than seventy five pitches, right,
like he threw He's threw five. I could see them going, hey,
let's cover this, or hey, like if he's like sixty
five pitches, like, hey, that right, cool, let's go get

six for Michael King. But yes, because oh wow, he
got his game in. He got a lot of pitches in.
But we also know that Michael King's seventy two innings
last year. They'll do that throughout the year. Engage. Okay,
how much should Michael King go tonight? Until it gets
to a certain point in September and or August. It's like, okay,
now we know what Michael King can do and he's

fine or whatever. But like absolutely, but other than that,
like let's say he's going good and it's a whatever
quote unquote normal game. I mean, Michael Kings, like I said,

so he's fully built up.

You know, I made the point yesterday. I guess if
all things were equal, I probably still would have preferred
one Cinderella. Like again, these are good matchups still right, Well,
when you put Michigan State in Ucon on a floor,
give me a breaker. Saint John's and Duke these will
be massive ratings. By the way, the highest rated game
of the first two rounds, no surprise, was Kansas Saint John's.

The New York market Kansas as a brand and a
great rate amazing Darren Peterson played here.

Obviously it was on CBS.

It had over ten million viewers, so a massive number
for a second round game. These matchups. The funny thing
is is like CBS and Turner are gonna get the ratings.
As the NCAA Tournament transitions away from Cinderellas, you're gonna
get the benefit of high ratings, which then leads you
down the path of saying, well, the tournament must be
really healthy because the ratings are really really good. But

I think to the average college basketball fan, they still
like the idea of just some random fourteen beating a
three on Day one. I don't think they want the
fourteen in the final four by and large, but I
do think they'd prefer to have like the shoe fit,
so to speak, on a Cinderella. And we're now two
years basically removed from Cinderella's for me, since the Badger's

choked and they're there one team that was basically upset
by UH and you know, the Assets didn't make it.
For me, I can still appreciate, you know, watching the
blue Bloods and stuff like that play, you know, great basketball.
But for me, the big difference is I just don't
have anybody to root for. I'm watching it and I'm

hoping I get good games, but it's not like, you know,
if there was.

Uh, what was the the team that had like the
old nun.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
As, they're like Chicago, Oh yeah, you know, but there's
no like loyal of Chicago that's like, oh okay, I'm
going to root for those guys because they're the obvious
underdog in this you know, that sea of blue bloods.

It is a great point that you have when when
your college is knocked out, which a lot a lot
of people are by.

I do think we've seen to your point about the
blue bloods. A it draws Michigan State in Yukon is

I mean, you're talking about massive brands, massive star coaches,
guys on those teams that are going to the NBA
or you're gonna be seeing at the next level. But

even we've seen the NFL has always been the biggest,
but we've seen the explosion of gambling and that has
really helped ratings across all sports. Even the spreads we
read off outside of Alabama or I keep saying Alabama
Michigan being nine and a half point favorite.

From a gambling perspective, it's fun when we're sitting here
talking about you could pick some upsets tonight and that's
pretty pretty slight spreads. There's a lot to get into there.
It is funny we see Cinderella. But at some point,
I mean Saint Peter's unbelievable three games, they got destroyed
in the Elite eight. They at some point these teams
run out and from a fan of the game, seeing

a twenty point spread in the Elite eight, which is
what Vegas is telling you that, but this team is
so much better than that team. Isn't always the most
entertaining game to me?

Yeah, I just I do wonder. I think it's too
premature to be like Cinderella is dead, you know, like
this people draw these hard lines, right or like you
or the idea that you can't compete with a twenty
million dollar budget. But I do tell myself this, at
the end of the day, there's like twelve players on
Kansas and then there's like twelve players on San Diego State.

As in Kansas can only have It's not like you
can have all the talent.

You can only have like ten minutes. And by the way,
nobody then knows what's going to happen.

There are injuries, there are circumstances that play out, and
even back in the day fifty years ago, Kansas still
had all the advantages over.

I think the NIL has helped more spread it out,
a little spread like a program like San Diego State,
which forty years ago wasn't kidding the top of fruits

you're not. If you're Wisconsin, maybe you're not Duke or
North Carolina, but Wisconstantine, say, are big programs that people

Like I'm with you on we haven't seen the Cinderellas,
but this whole narrative that Cinderella's are dead. Sianna pushed

versus three, And I know they didn't end up winning
those games, but it's not like they're getting beat by forty,
and it just I'm with Danio. You see the difference

Sianna's starters outplayed Duke starters. The bench for Duke is
you know, a won that out for them, because the
bench for Cianna is not even on the same page.
But I am curious if this becomes just a thing
going forward or if this is.

Kind of a two year anomaly. I think it's just
more of an anomaly. I think that they're gonna come
back eventually, because you know, you have to remember, yes
to Sammy's point, Eventually, their magic sort of fades away
once to get to like the Elite eight and like
the Final four. But we still have these, you know,

those rare situations where remember Butler was like two inches
away from a half court shot of winning the national
champion or winning the national championship. So, you know, I
think it can still happen, at least in basketball. Football
there's no chance in hell, but basketball we've seen that.

You know, you can be a mid major.

And just have one elite player that gets hot during
the tournament and you can ride them all the way
through the tournament. You know, look at Steph, you know,
Kurry Davidson and you know, uh Carmelo at Syracuse. You know,
you can just have that one player in basketball just
take over. So that's going to keep them alive. Yeah, no,

I would agree with that. And again there's to your point.
On football, it is a different game. And by the way,
it's been like a close system by in large four forever.
I mean, there wasn't even a path to like a
national championship until recently with the playoffs.

Basketball is you've got like these marquee brands looking for
a head coaches North Carolina like arguably the best job
in the history of the sport. Shoot Kansas theoretically could

where they're competitive and allow that we've spent so much

see the bullpen used the way hopefully it's going to

then what's gonna happen with your rotation? Like you're gonna
need Nick Paveda. But so they free up this money,
right because you Darbish is on the restricted list. But

it's kind of a not so fast my friend's situation
because Kevin ac has been reporting and he's got some
quotes yesterday from Aja Preller when he spoke with the
media of Preller basically saying, well, we accounted for Darvish's
money coming off in some form or fashion. We didn't
know if it was a retirement or restricted list, but
we knew the money was coming off. So according to

Kevin and we can follow up with him more coming
up at three point thirty in about ten minutes. But
per Kevin, it doesn't sound like this is really adding
payroll for Preller right, doesn't sound like all of a
sudden because Darvish is on the restricted list, you can
go out and sign Lucas Giolito because they freed up
all this money. That makes sense to me that this
isn't some surprising thing for the Potters, like, oh, we

just found twenty million dollars. I think the plan all
along was they knew they'd get some payroll relief, and
they've built their roster even knowing they were going to
get that payroll relief.

Well, and you think with Giolito where the Pottery should
be interested in him, because it's been concern about starting
pitching so far, concern already with Nick Pavetti yesterday.

You wonder if Lucas Giolito.

Does he want a long term contract, because if it's
gonna be a one year deal around the league, the
Pottery should jump at that and try to go get
a you know, a very solid star starting pitcher.

Kevin Ecy was on our show the other day, kind
of hinted that maybe this thing may next couple months,
this thing's going to be done. I mean, is are
are they so reluctant to tie out money in a
contract even though would one hundred percent help the team
this year because they're close to a deal on something.

Right, Yeah, that's gonna be interesting here. So Kevin said
today in his newsletter, was you Darvish's decision basically to
I don't even know what it is. It's not a retirement,
but the decision he's made financially is how the Padres
re signed Michael King. So like they already took those
dollars and reallocated them to King. And by the way,

they didn't have those many that much money from Darvish,
but they said, hey, we're getting fifteen or twenty here
from Darvish, let's spend twenty five on King. So with
that knowledge from Kevin, I think that's all you need
to know. Like they've already spent it is the point.
It's like anything in life. You know, when you get
a when you get a bump in salary, this is
what most people do when they get a bumping salary.

When they get a bumping salary, they just spend the
additional money they're now earning very rarely are you saving
that money? That's what I see here with the Padres,
like they were already spending the money on darbish, like,
oh well, now we have fifteen million to spend, let's
go use it elsewhere. And they did, and they spent
more money on Michael King. So my point is this,
if there is a change in ownership, maybe they get

you know, maybe that's beneficial at some point this year.
I'm not exactly sure how, but it gives them a
little bit more flexibility. But we're in season now and
they don't have the same options they would have.

Do you think on the Lucas Giolito note right, if
King goes out there tonight and is not performing well
and maybe you get Pavetta and King a second start
they're not performing well, do you think that incentivizes them

of people thought they were gonna be, or is this

kind of the pottery is gonna roll with what they have.

This is Kevin today on CUE. As for free agents
starting pitcher Lucas Giolito, who remains unsigned, the price would
need to come down significantly. Even then, the most optimistic
thing anyone with the Padres would say about the chance
they could sign him is that it is not zero.
So nobody's saying like, hey, we're on the phone with
him right now working on terms.

It's like we don't have the money. Like if it
comes to a lot and.

Circumstances change, maybe, but it sounded like they don't have
the money at least right now to land Lucas Giolido.
It's it seems almost too easy or too good to

maybe you've made this point. Someone's gonna get hurt, and
then that team is going to sign Lucas Giolto, and
that there'll be someone hurt in the next thirty days,
a prominent pitcher, hopefully not with the Padres, but in baseball.

Yes, yesterday was perfect.

You know, told just so and look I did it
a little bit too right, Like we were concerned. And
then the number one starter, the one guy that you're like,

were like, hey, they're going to do okay or you
you know, they need to do okay and make Paveeta
got blown up. And so it was kind of like
perfect in a bad way for podres and Potters fans

just to be able to talk about, Yeah, this is
a concern. We've been talking about it during spring and
during the off season, and the Potterys know it and
what are they going to do about it? Well, that's
why I want to see you get through a turn,
two turns through the rotation and see what happens. Also,
you know, not to say that you can't or should

it be through a Scoobal or fran Er Valdez. But also,
you know, let them face a few horse pictures and
let's see what this offense is about.

I'm glad you mentioned that Kevin Asy is with us
right now, and I think you've written about this. It's
one thing to say, hey, it's hard to beat elite
starting pitching, and that's factually true. I mean, for example,
Scoobl's won multiple cy Youngs, so it's not like anyone
is doing anything against him, including the Padres yesterday. But
wouldn't you agree when you faced schooble Valdez who Logan
Webb's coming up, Paul Skeens, I don't know about Crochet,

but just a general point at some point along the
way and we'll give it time. But like they've invested
a billion dollars in their lineup, they're gonna have to
hit some good pitching along the way as well.

Right, Yeah, it was one thing that they did, you know,
fairly well for Spurts under my shell, was find a
way to win, right, And so they didn't yesterday and
they were down for zero from the start, and then
when they failed to get a guy at least one
guy home after having person third with one out in
the first city. It's kind of like, okay, well, yeah,

it's gonna tough because you know the uh with a
four run or with four runs when Spoogol's on the
mount the last two years, which is on the side
young they are now sixty and three.

Wow, so and then they got two more runs so
six zero.

I didn't even do that math. It's probably like sixty
three and zero, but like you know, that's uh, that's
the way.

When you're facing a really good uh starter, you can't

and you have to have the perspective. Again, it's just
so hard in sport like baseball to have any type

When it comes to the money that the padres owed,

you darvish that they've gotten relief on they've already allocated
for that money, by and large, correct.

That does not mean they don't have any money, but
it does not I can tell you what it one
hundred percent does not mean they do not have fifteen

do a Paveta type deal. You know, you don't want

I wrote today that on the Glito front, the chances
are not zero, right according to someone in the not

to get your just thoughts on do we read anything
into Michael King's spring heading into his regular season just
because of how it played out last year with the injuries,
Like I wouldn't read into it if if twenty twenty

five was like twenty twenty four, but twenty twenty five
was different because of his health. And I'm just looking
at these numbers. I didn't watch any of it. You
watched some of it, you know, ten point one ninety
and all the indicators are not good obviously, Is that
at all part of the story heading into snine or none.

Yes, in that it means that we're wondering now guess what,
as you know, if it had been a one to
two era, then it would be out the window based
on what he did tonight, right, But the fact is
based on last year, based on what the spring was,
based on the home runs. And I know it's Arizona,
but still, you know, I watched a couple of games
where the Pottery scored like one run, So that means
(27:36):
the other team wasn't giving up a lot of home runs.
So Arizona doesn't just like the ball, doesn't, you know,
go out of there on a trampoline. And Michael King
gave up a lot of bumps and he was like
seven maybe it was six. It wasn't a good spring.
There are a lot of mistakes. Now, is he working
on stuff?

Like is the real work they're done in the bullpen?
A lot of times it is, especially a guy who's
been off for a year. Yeah, you gotta give me

the in the spring fishing later in the spring, clearly

working on some stuff, and so yet they it's something it's.

their first two games in terms of their lineup, like today,
ty France is in there for Gavin Sheets. Today we
see Louis Campusano for Freddy for mean, we haven't yet
seen Nick Castiano start any of this surprising or not

because it's just two games.

Well, ty France has faced Aboud like twenty six times
in the in the Al West and it's actually, I
think almost a three hundred hitter against him. And so
there's that because yes, when I saw the name and

eighty right. Not to say he's a better manager, that's
not the point. But Craig Stammond, what he's going to
say to the media is going to be a lot
different than what Mike shild was saying to the media
based on one day.

you go, wow, not does Greg Stalmmon have the confidence.

Stalmon is confidence. And also Craig Salmon's already said it
to the players, So like, that's why it matters. And I,
like you said, I don't know if you'll give be
a good manager, but his relationship with the players is
strong enough, and he is strong enough and comfortable enough
that he's not afraid to say.

What really to the rest of us is just pretty obvious.

Yeah, that's good perspective. That's really good. Last one for you, Kevin,
would be just on. I guess my one takeaway yesterday
in defeat was by getting Paveta to not get knocked
out in the first inning. Maybe it gave you more
of a shot in games two and three, if that
makes sense because you don't have to cover eight innings,
have like three guys down for you know, the second

game of the third game of the series. Like, what
do you think the plan is for Michael King and
his first start again with last year the way it ended,
Like how cautious will they be? And then I would
assume if they're tied or ahead, they'll just unload, you know,
the A team so to speak of their bullpen here tonight.

Yeah, I mean what he threw ninety one pitches, and
so I would say this that it would depend on
like the score. Let's say it's six zero, right, Michael
King did not need to go more than seventy five pitches, right,
like he threw He's threw five. I could see them going, hey,
let's cover this, or hey, like if he's like sixty
five pitches, like, hey, that right, cool, let's go get

six for Michael King. But yes, because oh wow, he
got his game in. He got a lot of pitches in.
But we also know that Michael King's seventy two innings
last year. They'll do that throughout the year. Engage. Okay,
how much should Michael King go tonight? Until it gets
to a certain point in September and or August. It's like, okay,
now we know what Michael King can do and he's

fine or whatever. But like absolutely, but other than that,
like let's say he's going good and it's a whatever
quote unquote normal game. I mean, Michael Kings, like I said,
went five ninety one pitches in his final spring start,
so he's fully built up.

was working in minor league baseball in Lynchburg, Virginia, the
flagship whatever that means.

There was like one radio station.

It was an AltaVista, Virginia, like fifteen twenty miles from Lynchburg,
and I'd have to drive there to do like pre
half in not pre half in posts, pre and post
for a minor league baseball team. Their format other than
Lynchburg Hillcats Baseball was AM country from like the forties,
fifties and sixties.

Awesome, so like old school country.

And then when I was calling basketball games at Longwood
University in Farmville, Virginia. The flagship was Kickin' Country, which
was like country music from the.

So it would be like country during the day.

You know, some people were listening to country music is

It's so funny, how because you know, our AM signal
cuts out at something. We have a pretty good signal
where you got a better than thirteen sixties where it
goes much farther. But I was visiting some family in
Kansas City and because it's so flat out there, yes,
this signal goes forever forever. I was in the middle
of Missouri and I can hear it crystal clear. The

station right out of Kansas City and there's like three
to five hours southeast. I mean, it was, It's so
funny to me how far it goes. And then in
like San Diego, it's because of how hilly it is
in the ocean.

True.

Although I will say this and some of our listeners
are aware of this seven sixties an amazing radio signal,
I mean.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Especially on the coast.
Speaker 5 (38:01):
Yeah, whether you're listening in Mexico obviously south of the border,
or listening in Los Angeles, like, this signal is a
really strong.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
You can hear it really well in Orange County, right,
really well.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
So we have that benefit.

I'm sure a number of you are listening, whether it's
south of the border or in Orange County or in
La County, and obviously here in San Diego County. So
we've got that station announcement for you again coming up

but here he agrees with the overall sentiment of just
it's one game, and that's honestly, I just can't. I
can't dissect again. I could say, hey, Nick Castianos is
in the line of that's interesting, but I can't pretend

like any lineup decision, roster decision had any thing to
do with yesterday. They lost eight two, and it's not
gonna impact probably today either. We need to you need
to let it like marinate a season, exactly.

That's that's not ideal, and so it would only be

into one individual game in a baseball season. But again,
playing on your home field, playing a good baseball team

up the schedule, do you pointed out earlier isn't exactly
getting easier. So I'm curious Michael King tonight has a
lot of pressure, not necessarily just because of him, but
because he was hurt last year, because Vetta didn't play
pitched the greatest yesterday, and then we're gonna see what
this back end rotation looks like. Was Walker Bueler with

her mom Marquez getting going next week? So yeah, it
should be a fun nine down and pick All Park
and hopefully they respond in a much better way.
