Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's a massive story. Just announced yesterday the Clerk of
Maccom County running for Secretary of State as a Republican
here in Michigan. Anthony for lady blowing the doors right
off on this one, apparently discovering shenanigans when it comes
to non citizens and the jury pools and more. Clerk,

(00:23):
thank you for taking the time story to be here
with us today and and sure with us study what
you found. This is really alarming for folks, and it
should be.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Justin it makes the hair on the back of my
neck curl. It is when we discovered sitting in a
meeting with my supervisors and we're talking about the problem
with the jury pool and we were talking about how
many people are calling off or sending their green cards
in that they cannot serve because they're they're not citizens, right,

(00:58):
And I thought, how do you ever get on that
list to begin with? I mean, why would they have
been on that list to be to serve on a
jury and and so we disqualify them. And so I
asked my supervisor, I said, how many we have of these?
I mean, this is a bureaucratic nightmare that we're dealing with,
that we've got to do this with so many people. Well,
it turned out since September fifth, we had about two
hundred and thirty nine people that were self reporting non citizens.

(01:23):
Self reporting is the key word. They're the ones that
told us two hundred and thirty nine. And then it
occurred to me, because I do the clerks have multiple functions.
My other department in another building is elections. I said,
let's take these two hundred and thirty nine, let's apply
him against a QVF. I'm just curious, just curious what

(01:44):
we come up with. And it blew my mind away
that there were fourteen people that were non citizens in
our election database at some point in time. Okay, but
here is what is even more disturbing. That's disturbing enough.
Three of them actually voted. One of them voted multiple times,

(02:08):
right they got We've got a voting record that they
voted multiple times. So we'll see. So you look at
this jury pool of two thirty nine. Five percent of
those non citizens ended up on the QVF, and of
that number, twenty one percent have voted. That to me
is disturbing. And then I had to back up a
live and say why and how did this happen? Take

(02:29):
a look at the Michigan voter registration application. It says
right up front, it's the top qualifications. I am a
US citizen, yes or no. You know, some people think, well, yeah,
I've lived here for a long time. I feel like
I'm a citizen. Yes, all right, and it goes sound further.
How do you prove it? You have to put your
driver's license, or if you don't have a driver's put

(02:51):
your Michigan issued a state ID, or or your Social
Security number. But if you don't have that, just check
us boxes. I don't have a valued Michigan issued driver's
license or a Michigan issued state ID or a Social
Security number, you're good to go.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Because there's nothing in the state at the state level.
Our system is flawed. There's nothing in the state level
that says we're gonna check on you, We're gonna we're
gonna look and see if you're really a citizen. And
President Trump has talked about that where we need a
national database where local uh, local clerks or the Secretary

(03:31):
of State's office can double check and make sure they're
a US citizen so they don't trip themselves up and
get themselves into the system. Maybe inadvertently.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
How do we how do we clean this up? I mean,
this isn't the first time we were told forever that
it didn't happen, you know, well, I think this is
the first.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, I think it is the first time it's ever
been proven through a system of how to system works?
And so how does it? How do you fix it?
I well, there's a lot of a lot that needs
to get done to clean it up. But going forward,
there should be a system within the state level. And
I'm sure the Citizens First initiative are citizens only voting

(04:17):
initiative that's out there that's going to say right there,
we need to prove at the state level that these
people are actually qualified to vote because they are US citizens.
Not self reporting, will.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Any of these people or did any of these people
actually serve on juries?

Speaker 2 (04:38):
That's the unknown because it's self reporting. How would we
know that we don't know? And that brought that up
to the Chief Judge beern At and he says, this
to me, is sounds pretty serious because some of these
people that did not report, we wouldn't have known. And
is it potentially that somebody along the line served in

(04:59):
a jury pool. I think it's possible because there's not
protocols put in place to prevent it from happening other
than self reporting. Have you trained these people are embarrassed,
Maybe they want to serve on the jury. Maybe they
feel good about it. They feel like, all right, I
feel like an American. I'm gonna I'm going to serve
on this jury without realizing the ramifications.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Have you turned this over to law enforcement and what
would they what would they possibly do to take the
next steps.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Or is anything to do we have We've turned it
over to law enforcement and we're dealing with them as
we speak. As we speak right now, I've got to
go to the other building and We've got somebody here
that we're turning this over to.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Anthony Forlini's the clerk there in McCom County. Ball on
the roof. Ride off this story yesterday, A story that
deserves the attention. I't to be a wall to wall
and all of the major outfits, the papers, et cetera.
How much interest have you had in this? Obviously this
happens because of the current system and the same criteria state.
Who again is running to be governor? Jocelyn Benson.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
My fourth interview this morning.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Okay, good. Well, that's good to hear. I mean, what
tell me, how are people taking this?

Speaker 2 (06:12):
You know what, I've seen it on both ends of
the aisle. It's not just the Republicans that are upset Democrats.
I've noticed some blogs of Democrats that are just as upset.
So this isn't a partisan issue. As we all know,
legitimate voting is a bipartisan thing. Republicans seem to have
taken the the torch with this, but I'm telling you

(06:37):
this is something that as Americans, we want to make
sure we're keeping our American right to vote and it's
not being diluted down with people that shouldn't be voting.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
And somebody in the chat this morning made this point,
could a non citizen convict a citizen if they end observing,
help get get that done on a jury pool. So
you know you've got multiple angles of this.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Good fight.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah. Macomb County Clerk Anthony FERLINI running for Secretary of
State as a Republican here in Michigan. And of course
folks want to find out more about that race. I'm
sure they can either go to for Leini for U
S dot com or US dot com. That's f O R.
L I N I, and I know folks are going
to have questions and want to catch up with you.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Awesome, awesome, Thank you for.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Taking the time to be here with us and to
give us the latest, and please come back with any
updates you have on this story too.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Thanks justin appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
