so what are we covering today?

Well, I mean I wanted to start out a little
bit by just talking about how great it is that
we are a week out from uh the eve of
the eve of fourth of July, and how just fantastic
it is going to be to be a North Dakota
and an American next week, and well, I mean it
(00:50):
is every day, but like especially next week, we're going
to be able to really highlight some great things in
the state of North Dakota and nationally about just how
great of a state in a country we are the
greatest country that has ever existed in the history of
planet Earth. And I think we just need to be
really using this weekend to get some downhill momentum into

a great week next week. Yeah.

So and and and My recommendation is, folks, get your
rest this weekend, because you know, we're gonna put the
put the pedals of metal next week with a lot
of just incredible celebrations throughout the country. And I'm really
looking forward to We're broadcasting next Friday, July third, and
next Saturday, July fourth from the Presidential Library. We're gonna

be inside the Ropes. And I'm really really excited and
deeply flattered and proud that we were requested to do that.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Well, I'd like think about this, like, i mean, just
the the divine intervention that we have of our two
hundred and fifth birthday of the country landing on a Saturday.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
You know, I hadn't thought about.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
It that way. It's it's pretty incredible. Like, I mean,
we are blessed as a country by God that in
so many different ways, but like that's one small way
that like we really lucked out and had some divine
intervention here that our two hundred and fiftieth lands on
a Saturday. So like it's we have a great opportunity

to you know, have that that holiday observed at most
workplaces on Friday, and and so people have a long
weekend just built into their schedule to to celebrate, to
get out to Medora, to see all the different things
that are going on around the state. It's not just
North Dakota that things are kicking off in. There's rodeos,
there's parades, there's fares, there's all kinds of stuff. And
(02:43):
you know, one other thing, just real quick, Michael, that
has been so cool to see is out great of
a job Secretary of Burgham and Secretary of Rollins have
done on the Great American Fair. Yeah, and and and
and like really highlighting something that I really thinks has
kind of gone by the wayside but was such an
American thing and it's still in still really present in

our small towns across the country that people don't necessarily
take advantage of and experience. And to have that highlighted,
just that cultural touchstone that we have in our history
as a country of you know, county fairs of you
know and things like that is pretty great. And everything
I've seen from that in BC is that they did
(03:27):
a phenomenal job planning and putting that on.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Yeah, the logistics involved in that are pretty significant, but
they seem to have pulled it off and it's gonna
last a couple of weeks. And that's one of the
things that I that I really appreciated is it gives
you know, everybody from around the country plenty of time
to to to make their way to our nation's capital.
And I think everybody should take an opportunity to spend
(03:51):
some time in our nation's capital because it really puts
a lot into perspective. And you know, last night I
watched the USA Turkey game soccer World Cup soccer match.
First time I've watched an entire soccer game in probably
four years. But you know, just looking at the crowds,
the Norwegians, the the scott the Scots that were there,
(04:13):
everybody is an American last night, and and I really
enjoyed that. Now the Americans came up short, but they're
moving into.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
The it's your fault.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Yeah, it's my fault. Yeah, So I'm not watching next Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah well so yeah, Michael, Like that is another I
It's been really great to just see that the circling
the wagons are on the US national team and it's
not over just because they lost last night, that's just there.
They've still got opportunities to continue to play and the
(04:48):
rubber is really going to hit their own here in
terms of the competitive ness and the quality of of
games and and and competition here in the next couple
of games, and so we'll see how we can do.
Are we still on a potential collision course with Great
Britain with England on July fourth?
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yeah, you know, it's funny that you asked that. Jake
and I were talking about that yesterday or the day before.
I don't think that that's, uh, that's doable anymore. I
don't think that that's in the cards now, based on
the seatings and and the different groups. I don't think
that that's likely to happen now or even possible to happen. Now,
that's my understanding.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Okay, that would have been that would have been just incredible,
and you know, England's pretty good, and so it'll been
pretty awesome to see that that matchup on July fourth,
But I'm not so sure that I'm not so sure
we would have came out on winning. Which maybe it's

a good thing that we aren't playing them on July fourth,
so that we can still say that we're we want
to know and things that matter in the history of
the United States.

Yeah, there you go there, you go.

Well, Michael, I mean like you got big plans for
the week. Next week, I know you you're gonna be
at the museum and then I'm sure you can be
blown stuff up. Right.

Yeah, there's I'm going to I had a number of
conversations with the communications folks at the for the library,
and I've made the decision that we're going to broadcast
to Code of Mornings on the first and the second
here from the studio there. There are there are a
lot of logistics involved, and they have to close the
library down physically, as well as pretty much the entire
(06:33):
town of Madora with President Trump coming in on July first,
and so so the communications team was was hustling to
get spaces for everybody to broadcast. And I said, you
know what, I am so benefited and so you know,
proud to be able to broadcast on the third and
(06:53):
the fourth from the library that I'm going to remove
myself from from your list of of accommodations. And so
we're gonna broadcast on July first and July second here
in the studio.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
So, Michael, like, if you're doing a lot of broadcasts
and the third and the fourth and then you're gonna
be at the Titans Football Academy in the Trenches camp
on Monday the sixth. You gotta find something to do
on the film.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Yeah, I was kind of hoping that you and Jacob
would would would accommodate my schedule for that day. I'm
you know, I am spending a lot of time in
the West and I love, you know, the western part
of Northdicota. I obviously live in Beulah, which is more
of central I think, but but I love western North Dakota.
(07:40):
And and I've been thinking about this lineup for for
quite some time. The second or the third, and the
fourth in Madora, the fifth I am wide open. That's
a Sunday, and then the sixth broadcasting from the Trinity
Titans football camp.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, and we're really excited to have you. I think
we're gonna have a couple of great guests for you
that day and uh just be able to get some good,
some good football on the field there at the practice
field at Trinity. We've still got rooms, so if anybody
is interested in signing up. We have got a great
list of coaches including uh Perrent New York Giants, Jay
(08:18):
Coobis and Uh, former Nebraska Cornhusker Tommy Armstrong junior who's
got his own football coming down in in Texas and
San Antonio, in the San Antonio area and uh, and
so like we've got a first class lineup of coaches
for that camp. And you know, there's a couple other
coaches that are gonna be helping out as well, but
those are kind of the the two, uh, the number

one and number two with the bullets there, and uh,
it's gonna be a skills camp. It's gonna be a
really strong on technique for linemen, for skill guys. And
I just really encourage everybody if if you've got a
kid or you are a kid that is interested in
improving and becoming a better football player, get over to
Dickinson on the sixth and second, sixth and seventh of
(09:00):
because we're gonna have a great camp. But then there's
also a youth camp for third three eighth grade as well.
So you just got a kid that is cutting their
teeth in the football.

World, this is a great opportunity.

Yeah, So that that is just something that we're really
really happy and proud and we're excited to have you
there to just talk about it. In real time.

talking about the beauty which is America and the celebrations
that are going to ensue over the course. It's not
even just the next week, it's the next couple of weeks,
the next couple of months.

Yeah, I mean, like there's so many, so many great
things that are going and I really encourage people, hey,
h embrace your love for this country, embrace all the
things that make it great. Put any differences aside with people,
and just really celebrate America the next for the next
year and forever. I mean, like we are so lucky.
And then our European and international friends that are here
(10:46):
for the World Cup, and we've talked about this for
the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
You're the one that brought it up.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
So let's let's let's make sure that like we love
our country as much as they are loving being here
and visiting. And we've got so many great things to
experience throughout throughout this great land, like we have we
have state parks that are just incredible, we have a
national parks that are incredible. We have all these different things.
Like you know, I saw that there's this thing that

the Great American road Trip, And we have two stops
on this Great American road Trip as part of America
two fifty, which is the one of the one is
the Bison in the Buffalo city of Jamestown and then
the Enchanted. And I would also add, you've got to
stop at Salem Sue if you're gonna be on that
ig night. But yes, yeah, and so like get you know,

get out there and see those things if you've never
I've got some some coworkers that grow up in North
Dakota that we've got a staff retreat in August and
we've got Salem Sue on the agenda because that's just
such a uniquely in North Dakota thing. Go experience those
uniquely American, uniquely in North Dakota and things, and uh,
(11:54):
you know, get out there and just really celebrate who
we are as a as a state and as a
kind of tree. So and and.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
No, go ahead, they want to hear from you.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Well, So I wanted to kind of flip the script
here and maybe tap into my my past life as
a journalist. I used to write for the Dickens and
Press a long long time. But uh, and just and see,
like there's been some changes at Kay Fire, and I
just wanted to just kind of ask, like, uh, what's
(12:27):
what's going on there? I think there's maybe some misinformation
out there, and I wanted to get it from the
horse's mouth on what's going on.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Okay, I I can, and I guess I want to
be clear. I'm not I'm not speaking for iHeart. I
I'm just I will. I am happy to relay the
information that I have, which is not very much. But
there have been changes here at kfy R. They were done.
It's not it's not just North Dakota, it's it's everywhere
(12:58):
from coast to coast. There's been some restructuring done. And
the emphasis is, you know, the the afternoon show has
been the afternoon host has been taken off. He's been
laid off from what I understand, as well as ginger
Ge here in in the studio. She she's the DJ
for ninety four point five and ninety two point nine
(13:20):
I think as well. But they have been laid off
and and the focus is more lined up on the
business side. What what they've done is and this has been,
you know, six eight months in the making. I would
imagine I just found out. I found out about it
like everybody else found out about it. I got a
text message from from one of our sponsors. And I
(13:42):
want to be clear, nothing changes with the code of mornings.
I just resigned a contract and so we we are
in good shape. The afternoon show apparently there was a
there there was a lack of listeners for successive rating periods,
you know, three rating periods in a row, which run
(14:04):
the rating periods run about six months, were coming up
at the end of a ratings period, So there was
there was a genuine lack of listeners. Though they were
they were very, very engaged in the show, but there
was a lack of listeners. And then there was a
lack of revenue. This is one of the things that
when I when I came on board and started Decode
(14:26):
of Mornings, I made sure that we were revenue positive
and we we generate significant percentage of the revenue here
at k f y R. And and what what that
what they what I heart wanted to do is to
align more of the revenue with with the successful shows.
(14:47):
So listeners and revenue are what have have really determined
it have have turned that and that show, the afternoon show,
was found to be not a revenue taker as opposed
to a revenue producer. And uh there if and and
that is less important than the ratings. The ratings and
(15:10):
and they're you know, mired in a very in a
tough spot. So they're going to nationalize that show. Now,
I do want to be clear there's I read some
some talk about uh, you know, Trent Loose and Scott
Bachmeyer and and and those folks they they still have shows,
they still have their segments, and and they'll still continue
to have their segments. They haven't been uh, they haven't
(15:32):
been let go or anything like that. Those uh, those
two shows, in particular, the Farm and Ranch Report here
on k f y R is insulated as well. Uh
and and and I think that that is a really good,
really good point that that, you know, when you have
someone like Trent LUs who has such a tremendous following
(15:54):
throughout the country, but recognizing that he's not necessarily a
local voice. He's he broadcasts front he's a in Nebraska,
though he has been on the on the Northcote Airways
for a long, long time, very successful show. We've had
him on Dacode of Mornings. But you know, transitioning that
it came down to money and if you're not you know,
(16:17):
generating revenue in your segment, then they're going to take
iHeart as a business, as a for profit company is
going to take a hard look at uh at at
you know, what the reasons are for keeping you on
the show. So my understanding is they're going to national.
They're gonna go to a national show.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
So is that is that, like the long term plan
is a national show or are they just planning on
filling that time slot with a national show right now?
See what seeing what happens, and you know, I mean
those syndicated shows they bring in listeners as well. And
so if this is a if this is a revenue thing,
I mean, you could see that happen in long term.
But I know something I've seen is a concern about
(16:58):
loss of local places, and you know, if there's any
interest in maybe bringing in like an afternoon like a
Dakota Afternoons type of approach on well.

As I have often said, I am not in the
business of turning down jobs that I haven't been offered.
But I don't think I think that that Dakota Mornings
with Michael Bell is a set program, and I don't
I think that, you know, uh, replicating it with the
exact show, I'm not sure is what they're looking to do.
But you know, I know that they want to focus

on local and they want to focus on revenue, and
those are the two most important components to any any

uniquely American, uniquely in North Dakota and things, and uh,
(11:54):
you know, get out there and just really celebrate who
we are as a as a state and as a
kind of tree. So and and.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
No, go ahead, they want to hear from you.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Well, So I wanted to kind of flip the script
here and maybe tap into my my past life as
a journalist. I used to write for the Dickens and
Press a long long time. But uh, and just and see,
like there's been some changes at Kay Fire, and I
just wanted to just kind of ask, like, uh, what's
(12:27):
what's going on there? I think there's maybe some misinformation
out there, and I wanted to get it from the
horse's mouth on what's going on.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Okay, I I can, and I guess I want to
be clear. I'm not I'm not speaking for iHeart. I
I'm just I will. I am happy to relay the
information that I have, which is not very much. But
there have been changes here at kfy R. They were done.
It's not it's not just North Dakota, it's it's everywhere
(12:58):
from coast to coast. There's been some restructuring done. And
the emphasis is, you know, the the afternoon show has
been the afternoon host has been taken off. He's been
laid off from what I understand, as well as ginger
Ge here in in the studio. She she's the DJ
for ninety four point five and ninety two point nine
(13:20):
I think as well. But they have been laid off
and and the focus is more lined up on the
business side. What what they've done is and this has been,
you know, six eight months in the making. I would
imagine I just found out. I found out about it
like everybody else found out about it. I got a
text message from from one of our sponsors. And I
(13:42):
want to be clear, nothing changes with the code of mornings.
I just resigned a contract and so we we are
in good shape. The afternoon show apparently there was a
there there was a lack of listeners for successive rating periods,
you know, three rating periods in a row, which run
(14:04):
the rating periods run about six months, were coming up
at the end of a ratings period, So there was
there was a genuine lack of listeners. Though they were
they were very, very engaged in the show, but there
was a lack of listeners. And then there was a
lack of revenue. This is one of the things that
when I when I came on board and started Decode
(14:26):
of Mornings, I made sure that we were revenue positive
and we we generate significant percentage of the revenue here
at k f y R. And and what what that
what they what I heart wanted to do is to
align more of the revenue with with the successful shows.
(14:47):
So listeners and revenue are what have have really determined
it have have turned that and that show, the afternoon show,
was found to be not a revenue taker as opposed
to a revenue producer. And uh there if and and
that is less important than the ratings. The ratings and
(15:10):
and they're you know, mired in a very in a
tough spot. So they're going to nationalize that show. Now,
I do want to be clear there's I read some
some talk about uh, you know, Trent Loose and Scott
Bachmeyer and and and those folks they they still have shows,
they still have their segments, and and they'll still continue
to have their segments. They haven't been uh, they haven't
(15:32):
been let go or anything like that. Those uh, those
two shows, in particular, the Farm and Ranch Report here
on k f y R is insulated as well. Uh
and and and I think that that is a really good,
really good point that that, you know, when you have
someone like Trent LUs who has such a tremendous following
(15:54):
throughout the country, but recognizing that he's not necessarily a
local voice. He's he broadcasts front he's a in Nebraska,
though he has been on the on the Northcote Airways
for a long, long time, very successful show. We've had
him on Dacode of Mornings. But you know, transitioning that
it came down to money and if you're not you know,
(16:17):
generating revenue in your segment, then they're going to take
iHeart as a business, as a for profit company is
going to take a hard look at uh at at
you know, what the reasons are for keeping you on
the show. So my understanding is they're going to national.
They're gonna go to a national show.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
So is that is that, like the long term plan
is a national show or are they just planning on
filling that time slot with a national show right now?
See what seeing what happens, and you know, I mean
those syndicated shows they bring in listeners as well. And
so if this is a if this is a revenue thing,
I mean, you could see that happen in long term.
But I know something I've seen is a concern about
(16:58):
loss of local places, and you know, if there's any
interest in maybe bringing in like an afternoon like a
Dakota Afternoons type of approach on well.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
As I have often said, I am not in the
business of turning down jobs that I haven't been offered.
But I don't think I think that that Dakota Mornings
with Michael Bell is a set program, and I don't
I think that, you know, uh, replicating it with the
exact show, I'm not sure is what they're looking to do.
But you know, I know that they want to focus
(17:30):
on local and they want to focus on revenue, and
those are the two most important components to any any
