Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rick Lewis five six six nine zeros or KWA commas
Sperdel text line. We got Rockies Baseball coming up here
at the bottom of the hour. As the Rockies are
in Houston, right, take on the Astros, who have lost
eight straights.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
The Rockies swept them here in Colorado and then they
went on to play a series over the weekend, a
four game series against Seattle. They lost all of those
games as well. The Houston Astros are never going to
win again. That's the feeling most around the league have.
So good news for the Rockies have a chance to
step their own losing streak starting tonight. So looking forward

(00:35):
to that. So againting cover starting here at five point thirty.
We were having a conversation in the break for just
a moment as we've been kind of talking about the draft,
and again we're gonna wramp up our coverage of that
as we get closer. We're a little bit more than
a week out from it. You know, the Broncos head
they have seven picks, as we've talked about quite a bit,
only one pick inside the top one hundred. An interesting
conversation on Broncos Country tonight last night so a shout

(00:56):
out to those guys because they were talking about supplementing
rather than using either future draft capital or current draft capital.
If you want to move around in the draft, are
there players potentially on the roster that would make some
sense to some other teams? And you know, then the
usual names get thrown around. You know, Riley Moss is
a name that gets thrown around. Troy Franklin is another

(01:17):
name that got thrown around. Jared Stidham was an interesting
one that the guys brought up last night that I
there was just a pause of going, like, you know,
there might be a team if they're thinking about quarterback
next year, perhaps saying a year of Jared Stidham and
Stidham I think would like that opportunity as well, an
opportunity maybe to play.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
So what what are you talking about conceptually in terms
of the price to acquire Stidham?

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Well, it feels like, I mean, we always value our
our own guys a little higher than.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
The number I would want a fourth.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Maybe I'd take a fifth, probably not getting that, but
a dollar I acknology. I probably have a higher value
on my own guy.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
I like stiitty, but you're not getting a fourth.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Okay, what do you think like a sixth at at?

Speaker 2 (02:08):
I think I think at best. I think at best.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
If I'm Georgia, like, hey, this guy can start for
you Arizona.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Maybe, uh you know, I know Kyler is gone. Who's
Who's Oh? Is that is that Geno? No in New
York who went to Arizona? Didn't they the best?

Speaker 1 (02:32):
That's still there?

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Jacoby Brissette.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Oh, Minshew Minshew, that's who.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
You're That's what's not Minshew's playing? Yeah? Yeah, I mean
I I think it comes down with the Broncos entertained
that I don't think they could get better than a
six or seven, And the only only way they do
that is if they feel like they're comfortable with whomever
is behind Stidham. I mean, you've been very, very fortunate

(02:58):
with bo really up except the playoff game late in
the game. I mean, that dude has been durable. He's
been there all the time. But statistically speaking, I think
you have to go into the season saying we need
a guy that could play three or four games for

(03:18):
us and keep us afloat and help us win games.
And if they feel like somebody behind Jared Stidham actually
is good enough to do that, then maybe they would
entertain it. But I just don't think. I don't think
teams will be clamoring. I think Stidham and I know
Bronco fans didn't like the AFC Championship game, and I'm

(03:39):
sure Stead he didn't like the throw that wound up,
you know, giving the Patriots there their only touchdown the
first half. But you gotta have you got to have
that guy. I think Stidham can play in the league.
But you know what, what if you move him. He's
making close to ten million dollars. Is it not eight?

(04:03):
I think it's eight to ten. So I just don't
see teams knocking down the door. Yeah. I believe he's
one of the highest paid backups in the league. And
as you said, Dave, except Kirk Cousins now Kirk Cousins, right.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Yeah, fourth highest paid. He's got an eight million dollar
cap hit this year five point nine base Okay, So.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Do you believe stities are the guy that can win
three four games for you? I probably have a higher
view of him than a lot of Broncos fans, right.
I think the New England game tough conditions. I think
the Patriots were good on defense, and he made a
bad decision which is going to happen. And the guy

(04:47):
hadn't played the entire year, so I'm not going to
base that one decision to say well this, I mean,
he can't play. So I think it boils down to again,
what they feel like they have behind him. And would
there be a team that would pick up the phone
and call George and or Sean and say, hey, we
really we want Stindham. What will it take to get him? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Sam Ellenger here, Yeah, Son.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
He's a good athlete, he's got a pretty good arm.
I think he understands the offense. I don't you know,
deep down, you got to know what the staff actually
thinks about him, and we don't that. That's where I
think a lot of people who cover the Broncos, and
I'm probably one of them, you know, you try to
come up with reasonable ideas and deep down we don't

(05:34):
know what that staff thinks about like a backup player
to a guy, and we're talking about them trading a
guy or them saying, you know, or they can't trade
this guy. Really, they might be able to trade that
guy if the building has seen enough of that young
guy in practice, and says, this kid can play and

(05:54):
nobody accept us, really knows about it.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Saunds interesting too, because he was brought in. Remember he
was one of the first signees for Searon Paydon. That's right,
that's right, on the same day that they did Mike
McGlinchey and Ben Powers. He was the first, and of
course that was when Russell Wilson was here at the
same time. Are we passed the window of what stood?
I mean, Sidham's good for Bow. They've talked at length

(06:20):
about his influence on developing Bow and what that quarterback
room is. But the part of the reason that Sidam
is here, at least in my opinion, is that he
was here to stabilize the room while you were moving
from one quarterback to the next era of quarterback, which
is bon Nicks. But now we know what bo Nicks is,
like I think we've I'm not saying he's out lived
or out lasted what he represented. I'm saying that I

(06:42):
don't know if you need to have one of the
best backups or highest paid backups behind bo Nicks were
good there?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah, No, I don't agree with the first part of that.
I think I don't think that was a reason that
you kept Stidham because he was I think it was.
I think it was, you know, kind of a byproduct
of just his personality. I think he was good for
the room. You'd watch your second team quarterback, especially when

(07:11):
a rookie has the job. I mean, they competed. He said, hey,
you know, I'm not I'll be here, but I think
I'm a starting quarterback. But he handled it really well.
You'd want that from your backup quarterback. But that would
not be reason enough to keep him. That he sort
of was that guy behind the scenes. I think they
kept him because they really they've and I think it's
the reason that Sean signed him so early. He'd seen

(07:32):
him on tape he coached against him, and he said,
this guy, this guy can play just in case something happens.
I think that that way of thinking still has to
apply to the backup quarter back position. This year. All right,
we're paying him five point eight that's you know, his
fourth highest paid backup quarterback. Is what he brings to
us worth it? You didn't find out last year because

(07:55):
both played the whole year, right, and then he asked
him to play in the most important game of the
year at that point, and he had taken a snap
the entire year. Little unfair. That's the way the NFL works.
Do you think you have to go into this season?
I think if you're if you're the organization, the front office,
and say, okay, I want a guy as a second
team quarterback that can start for us for four weeks

(08:17):
and help us win three of those four and not
bury us until Bow hopefully is able to come back. Now,
if you think that Stidham, then you probably live with
the five point eight. If you think there's a guy
behind Stidham that you think he can do that, well,
then you probably entertain ideas. If anybody calls you about Stiddy,

(08:39):
I think you go back to the year before last
when he did start a couple of games. Oh no,
Russell Wilson. Yeah, year he started what two games, started
the Chargers and started the Raiders, and he split one
in one. I think he showed there that he's solid.
I think he's a solid backup quarterback two too. I
don't know if he's the best backup in the league
or the fourth one. The highest paid mc cousins has

(09:02):
to be. Yeah, he considered a backup at this point.
Give me one second, even though I think pretty good
chance he'll start.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
But same, let's see here, I know the Mariota's up there,
Trot Taylor.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Me pull us up here.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
I don't. I think you have this organized as backups
if you get a first, Zach. Zach's the one that
told me he was fourth highest paid. Verset's pretty high
up there too, but he might be starting. He's getting
twelve and a half totals in Arizona. Yeah, he's the
starting quarterback for the Cardon. Yeah, he's getting six point
two right now. Minshew's getting five point seven. So I

(09:41):
guess wherever you view those guys. Go ahead, Zach, I've
been a big gardner, Minshew.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Fan Mariota is the highest paid with seven million a year,
and then he's tied with Davis Mills.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
They're the highest paid.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
Then Jacoby Brissett third at six point twenty five, and
then Jared stid In is tied with Joe Flacco now
for fourth at six Okay, okay.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
I think Marcus Mariota brings a different component to the
argument because of his athletic ability in that offense. Right,
that offense wants the quarterback to be able to run
it a bit more and he can. Davis Mills has
proved in the absence of c. J. Stroud that he's

(10:20):
capable of winning games for Houston, you know, so he's
actually played in won games. It went on a run
with him. Actually, yeah, last year. I'd heard last year.
So Stidy doesn't have that on his resume because he
because Bo was healthy the whole year. So it's hard
to look back at last year and you're trying to

(10:42):
draw conclusions based on one game of play and a
guy he hadn't taken a snap and all, by the
way prepared this week and no pressure, you're playing in
the AFC Championship game. So I still think Jared Stidham
is more than a competent quarterback. I agree, So I
would be inclined to leave it alone, you know, unless

(11:03):
somebody offers me like a fourth and I absolutely do
not think anybody is going to do that. I'd probably
leave it alone.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Okay, what about the other two positions there? We're talking
about wide receiver obviously out of Jaln Waddle, so the
calculus is a little bit different in that room. So
Troy Franklin seems to be the most obvious name that
has still in a rookie contract, had a couple more
years left, that had over one hundred targets last year.
Might be able to sell that to a team that
is looking for a pretty decent wide receiver too. Yeah,

(11:35):
Or do you leave the room alone, especially with the
organ connection with him and Bo No, I don't think.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
I don't think that. I don't think that would play
into it. How much how much did we see? How
much did the Bronco staff see Troy Walters, Troy Walters,
Troy Franklin improve this year from the previous year quite
a bit? Quite a bit? Yes, I can still hear
Champagne and when talking about Troy Franklin talk about that's

(12:04):
a guy that can really run. So there's a premium
on young players in their first contract, rookie contract that
have that kind of athletic ability. And there, yes, he
dropped too many passes. I think you can help fix that.
I mean, I really do. I think you can become

(12:26):
more of a maybe not a great ball catcher, but
more of a consistent, competent ball catcher. And that's what
coaches get paid to do, right. So I would not
on face value, I would not be inclined to trade
Troy Franklin again unless the offer was, like, you know,

(12:47):
a third round pick, which I don't think you have
any absolutely no shot to get. Yeah. I think he
still has an upside in my opinion as well. He
was a fourth round pick, I believe. Yeah, I don't
know if you'd even get a fourth rounder for him
really well.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
I think today's point is more about if somebody gives
you a de von Vle kind of offer right where
it's like we're getting a fourth and a seventh for
this guy. Yeah, we kind of have to do that.
That makes sense.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Yeah, And as it Dave said, if somebody comes and goes, hey,
we want Troy Franklin, what do you want, We'll give
you a third where somebody really want is not going
to It's not going to happen.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
That is not What about Marvin Mims, that's a different deal.
He's at a also going into final year of his context.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
That's it. That's a different deal In terms of the
compensation you might be able to get in return. I
would think the compensation would be higher for Mems than
it would be for Franklin because of Mems' ability as
a return guy. Now you're not going to unless you
think Marvin Mims can turn into, you know, a really
good receiver. You're not going to give a third round

(13:52):
draft choice up for a return guy. You're just not
so maybe fourth. I think you can get a fourth
round I got to be honest about I wouldn't be
inclined to move Marvin either. If if I'm Davis Webb,
I'm as stand on a table say wait a minute,
you just gave me this job to call plays. I
would like nineteen to be part of this mix. Agreed, right,

(14:13):
I would argue for the room to stay intact. Let's
let's this thing play out. Let's see, let's see, and
let's let's let's go into this offseason with the intention
of helping incorporate Marvin Mims into this offense a bit more.
That's my job, right as an offensive coordinator. Let's go
into the season, say we're going to help Troy Franklin

(14:34):
become a more consistent ball catcher. That's the wide receiver's
job as well as the offensive coordinator. I mean, part
of that is just having the confidence that you know what, bro',
You're going to get hit, but you're able, You're able
to catch this ball. And hold on to it. You're
strong enough. You know, you've been in the weight room.
There's all sorts of positives form I think I think

(14:55):
you can improve, even at the elite level. You can improve.
A kid that has that kind of a skill set
in terms of being a more consistent ball catcher. Now
he has to do it. If he doesn't do it,
then all bets are off.
