Speaker 2 (00:20):
It can be our Whiskey Thief call.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Of the day.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
And the KSR Pre Show is presented by Cornbread Hemp.
You can go to Cornbreadhimp dot com slash action to
help keep hemp legal here in uh in Kentucky and
across the country. All Right, So yesterday we had Woo
Woo Cash orbsood In and I was trying to recruit
WU to be a part of this KSR team that
(00:43):
I'm sure you've all heard about. And this is a
media madness. Is Mark Popos calling it. He's putting this
thing together for September seventeenth. So here's the thing. I
can't be there that day because of the obligations that
I have to be it louder than life est. So
if I can't be on the team and I can't
be there. I am just going to assume the role
(01:05):
of lead recruiter. So what I'm doing every day this
week is just bringing out old basketball players to see
if I can't get them to be a part of
this KSR media madness team.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
So yesterday we got.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Wu and it was a maybe from Wu. So he
didn't give me a hard commitment. He didn't give me
a yes, but it was a maybe. So we'll hold
on to hope that Wu maybe we'll play with us.
And you know, we need some height. It's one thing
you can't teach his height, and Wo's got plenty of that.
So now today my co host is on the phone.
(01:36):
He is from Clay County, Kentucky, part of the Unforgettables,
and I'm bringing him on to see if he can
be a part of the KSR team. Richie Farmers on
the line, Good morning, Ritchie, how are you?
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Hey? Good morning Shannon, And it's awesome to be with you.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
And you know, Matt was trying to give his pitch
the other day and I heard WU talking about, you know,
how he feels at his age. So here in a
little bit, I'm going to send you a picture of Wo.
And me together years ago. I think it was maybe
ten years ago. But it's it shows just how much bigger,
(02:17):
just how big WU is compared to you know me
that played. But I don't know if I'll be able
to do it or not. I told you guys the
other day, I've had I've had a hip replacement. I've
had you know, both of my feet operated on. I've
had a back surgery, and I've actually got a torn
(02:37):
moniscus on my right knee.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Wait a minute, now, you added another injury in forty
eight hours.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
So you didn't tell us about the torn meniscus.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Well, listen, I've had it, and I've probably got more
things that I didn't tell you about.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
This a bad thing.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
So you know what, So and down the floor, Come on, Richie,
you do it.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
So so so we'll see. Uh, well, we'll talk about
it as the day goes here. But but I said that,
you know, Matt's going to have to holler at some
of these younger guys.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah still, but still. Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
You know, I'm getting ready to have a birthday here
in about two weeks, and I'm turning fifty seven, fifty seven,
all right, you know, And I mean it just flies By.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
You know what was saying yesterday that he hadn't touched
a basketball and I think it was five years. Do
you still every now and then go out and you know,
do you got like a hoop on your driveway or
like do you do you go out and shoot around
a little bit just for fun?
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Or when's the last time you picked up a basketball.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
It's it's probably been at least four or five years.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
So I don't I think we're trying to.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
It's just yeah, it's just one of those things where
h you know, like my doctors would say, what are
you doing?
Speaker 1 (04:07):
So here's my thing that you got the talent man
like you still to me in my mind, you still
got the ability to shoot. We don't need anybody to
have to, you know, chase anybody down the floor. We
just need you to post up in the corner and
shoot your shot. That's all we need.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Yeah, well, I mean, you know, there there's a possibility
that I could still do that, but I would have
to stand totally still and for the whole time, and
and and and to be honest, you know, when you know,
when you've played like like we played, you know, you
get out there and the competitive juices get the flowing.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
And you want to just I mean, you want to
have fun and you.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Want to you know, you want to be able to
do what you used to be able to do, and
it's just not possible a lot of times. But you know,
I had three sons and all those you know, they
played and so uh the only time. And it's been
a few years now because you know, as they've gotten older,
we they don't play as much either.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
But but I used to play with.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Them in the driveway and with them and you know,
work with them.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
A little bit.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
But I but it's been a few years now for
me since I've even tried to play.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Well.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
My thought process is Richie Farmer, who hasn't shot at
basketball in four or five years, is still going to
be better than a Ryan Lemon or a shan of
the dude who shoots the basketball every day.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
So you know, it's one of those things where.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
You still I think you still got that ability, maybe
not the ability to get up and down the floor
like you used to, but still the ability to shoot.
You know, Matt was talking about yesterday pickleball. He said,
now that pickleball has become a thing. Doctors are loving
it because there's like torn meniscus and the replacements that's
got to go on and all this stuff, because all
(05:53):
these older people still think they got it and they're like, well,
you know, I may not be able to play tennis,
but I can go out here and play some pickleball.
And because because of that, they I think he was
saying that the number of surgeries has just skyrocketed from
all these pickleball injuries.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Do you do you pickleball at all?
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Richard? No, I do not pickleball. But I'll be honest
with you.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
I can I can understand, you know, doctors loving it because.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
You know, the older we get.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Like I think Matt was even talking about the other day,
you know, your body is just not made. That's why
it is kind of amazing what Lebron is still able
to do at his age, the.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Way he moves.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
And but you know, people have to you have to
take care of your body, and it's he probably spends
millions of dollars a year just just taking care of
his body.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yes, probably didn't have the access to to the lot.
I mean a lot of the thing. The advancements in
recovery are a lot more than what they were, you know,
back in the early nineties. You know, things have advanced
so much, you know, so I'm sure, like you know,
the ice.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Bath and all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
I'm just talking about the things that he had, like
the facilities that he has access to, the different things
that he has access to, the different medicine that he
has access to.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Was you know, it's a.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Lot different than you know, taking out of your profen
and jumping an ice bath, which is what you guys
were about.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
I mean, listen for yes, and for instance, you know,
my junior year, I was I was having a lot.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Of trouble with my beat and you know, has it come?
Speaker 4 (07:28):
As it turns out, I had Planner's fasciatis and so
Walt McCollums he's like, well, man, you got Planner's fasciatis.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
And I said, well, what's that mean?
Speaker 4 (07:38):
He says, well, you know, the only the only cure
for it, or the only thing they say that. He said,
six weeks rest. And I said, well, what does that mean?
He says, well, either you can tape it up and play,
or somebody will play for you.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
I said, taper up, and so, uh.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
You know, so I played the last two years of
my career I played was Planner's fasciatus. I mean it
never went away. I've got chronic planners fasciatus in both
feets still today.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah. Yeah, you know, And I've worked.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
I've worked with the guys at UK and I mean,
you know, I've made them pull their hair out trying to,
you know, find things that work. But you know we've
we've done the best we can do. And I mean,
you know, you just have to have to get through it.
But when you hear people talk about that, you know,
they talk about how painful it is. And I said,
I mean, you know, I think, gee, I live with
(08:29):
that all the time.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Uh. You know, so it was a different mindset.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Back then, and you know, things are different, and there
have been tons of advancement, that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
You know.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
We were talking yesterday on KSR about guys that when
they were here were rock stars. We mentioned Rex, we
mentioned John Wall. But I would say, Richie, you were.
You were a bit of a rock star in your
own right back in the day playing here for Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
I doubt there were many days.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
That you went by that that you didn't you know
that you really needed something that you couldn't get here
at Kentucky.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
Is that fair to say, well, well, that's fair to
say yes, and to be honest with you, you know,
not and not in a bragging way. But I will
tell you that I had both kay Wood Lefford, who
was one of my heroes, and of course mister Bill Kintly,
who you know had been around I guess he was
around the program for over fifty years and he was
(09:23):
everybody's hero that played there.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
I mean he was.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
He was just that guy that you went to and
talked to about everything. But I had both of those
guys actually tell me. They said, do you realize that
you're the most popular player that's ever played here? And
I said that, I mean to me, yeah, I was
like that was kind of like an invisible trophy that
I couldn't even start to comprehend at the time.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
But now when I look back on it, you know.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
To have both of those guys say that, you know,
Kate would, I said with him on the airplane, he said,
he said, three out of every four calls to the
Big Blue Line and the Coaches Show, is Richie gonna
play tonight? Why Richie playing? You think Richie's gonna play
in the pros. Well, why ain't Richie? You know, so
they wanted to know, you know, the people, And I
(10:13):
think it's because the people of Kentucky, you know, kind
of watched me grow up. And obviously playing in the
state tournament I played, I played in five, but.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
My eighth grade year, I.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Was kind of, you know, one of the kids that
got in at the end of the game when the
game was over. So I played a minute and eight
seconds in that tournament and I scored two points as
a n eighth grader, and so that was that was
a big deal at the time. I don't think at
that point, I don't think there had ever been a
nighth grader scorer in the state tournament. But you know,
(10:46):
obviously went on and and through my high school career.
We played, we played in three out of four state
championship games, and you know, I won two MVPs and
still the all time leading scorer in the state tournament.
So I broke Wahwah Jones' record, which had stayed I
think that it had stood for about forty four years,
(11:08):
and I almost broke it by one hundred points. So
it's incredible.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Yeah, man, and here's the thinglievable. Yeah, thirty five years later,
people are still saying, it's rich Richie gonna play in
this KSR media madness.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
People still need to play Richie. Yeah, play media madness.
I don't know. I'm trying to get them, everybody, I'm
trying my best here. I'm trying to give them every
pitch that I can.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
And listen and then let me tell you.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Uh, Shannon, you know that I love you and I
consider you one of my friends and all you guys, I.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Am kind of like a partial part of the team.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
But you know I and I would love nothing more
than to do this, but I've really got to think
it over from a physical standpoint.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
That's fine, that's fine. We'll take it as a maybe.
Just leave it as a maybe.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Yeah, we'll leave it as a man.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
I got two maybies.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
But you want to talk about and I think we
may have mentioned this last time you were on here,
but the amount of ni O money that you could
have made if that were a thing back then, I mean,
my god, you would.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Have been swimming.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
You would have been Scrooge McDuck jumping into a polloy
of money back then.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
It's crazy. And also at that time.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
You know, I've told people, I said, you know, the
coal business was booming still at that point in time,
or it was still really big, And I said, I
would have certainly been in the face of the coal
industry for eastern Kentucky. Yeah, and you know, and then
obviously probably would have had a lot of other opportunities.
But what these guys are able to make and.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
The amount of money they're making today, I mean.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
It really I said the other day, you know, it's
almost like now if you get if you go to
college to play, it's almost like it was making the
pros back when I.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Was a kid.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Yeah, And so I mean these kids, uh, these kids
go and I mean they're making really really good money,
even the kids that don't play much. You know, the
guys at the end of the bench, you know, they're
they're they're not doing too bad themselves. And you know,
and that's and and I'm I'm for the kids making money.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
I'm for all of that, But.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
You know what, the way that that they're doing and
I think kind of got away from what NIL.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Is really supposed to be. It's more pay to play
these days, it seems.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Yeah, yeah, I want to get your take after the
break on the new five year rule that's being proposed
in just a minute. But before we do, though, I
was looking at this picture I just tweeted out for
the show today.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
I've got it.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
It's you guys from ninety one ninety two, the Senior Cats.
It's uh, it's pel Free yourself, Sean Woods and Darren
Feldhause do you ever you still talk to those guys?
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Do you have any contact with these absolutely?
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Yeah, we yeah, we stayed.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
We went through I'll be honest with you when you
go through what we went through, and you know, there
there was this little crazy Italian man that showed up
and uh and it seems, uh, you know that the
only way that we could survive this little man's workouts
and and all of his rants and rays and you
(14:26):
know just how crazy he was, we had to do
it together. We had to we had to help each other,
we had to encourage each other, and uh, you know,
to be honest, Coach Patino, he he was. He was
so awesome and and and if you think about what
he's done and his career, I mean he's been great through.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Uh every era and uh and he's still great.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Where he goes the guy wins. You can't. You can't.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
Absolutely and and we I still I'm in contact with
Coach Pattina, like we all still talk because you know,
the closeness that you get when you when you work
that hard and when you go through you know, the
ups and downs and the things that we all went through,
it's a it's a bond that'll be there for life,
(15:18):
and you know that's a great thing. But certainly still
keep in contact with John Darren.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
And John he is Richie Farmer.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
We're going to take a break and we'll take your
calls if you want to get into eight five, nine,
twenty two eighty seven. Will be right back. It is
the KSR pre Show. All right, welcome back. It is
the KSR pre Show. Shitting the dude. Richie Farmer joining
me on the show today. One person wrote in and
was mentioning Uzman Enjai, who said that the retreat that
(15:48):
Mark Pope took the team on was one of the
greatest experiences of his life. Did did Coach p Ever
take you guys to a retreat back in your day, Ritchie,
or what did you guys do outside of of like
practice As far as like I don't know, guys just
trying to hang out and build some camaraderie.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
No, we were always trying to retreat from him.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Practice.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Yeah, take you guys out like on a on a
bowling trip or or I don't know, anything away from practice.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
Yeah, he was big on us, you know, doing some
things together. And and but I'll be honest, we spent a.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Whole lot of time. I mean we were either watching film.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
You know, back in the day, you know the Cats Center,
there was there was a requirement you had to spend
so many hours over there with.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Tutors and you know, making sure your classes.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
And you heard WU talking about if you were late
or you missed the class it was five o'clock a
five am you were on the track running. Yeah, And
so you know there was I thought for a long time,
I've said this many times. I thought for a long
time that I thought Coach p might have thought that
(17:07):
we were on a track scholarship.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
He might have been the track. You know, we spent
so much time over there.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
But that was that was me playing baseball for Bellerman.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
I mean, you know, as pitchers, pitchers had to run
more than everybody else while the position players were taking
batting practice. The pitchers were out there running polls or
running around the campus, and I say, you know what,
we couldn't beat anybody in a game of baseball, but
we could outrun just about anybody in the country.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
Well you know that.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
And and to be honest, you know, that was I
think it was his way of you know, because basically
they broke us down. I mean they broke you when
when Rock first took over, or when coach Patino came
in and Rock got hold of us. I mean, they
(17:58):
would make you throw up lifting weight. They said, have
you ever thrown up letting lights? And I said, you know,
I didn't think it was possible. And they said, well,
what about just by using a towel and resistance. Do
you think that there's any way that you could throw
up doing that? I said, no, there's no way. Well
there is a way. It sounds like yeah, I mean
(18:18):
it's I mean, but it was just unbelievable, you know,
the things that we did, and we we our goal
was to be the hardest working team in America because
you know, obviously he felt like that we didn't have
the talent, and we didn't have the talent and the
size and the numbers that everybody his first year, we
had eight scholarship players and some walk on, so you know,
(18:42):
our numbers were thin. But and a lot of people
that year predicted that we would win anywhere from three
to six seven games. And that's the year we went
fourteen and fourteen we were undefeeding SEC at home. You know,
we beat Shack and Chris Jackson and Stanley Roberts and
(19:02):
some of those teams.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
We didn't went on the road that year, but we.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
Didn't lose and rough and and you know, I can
tell you that the fans that.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
Year were unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
And that's the year that a lot of people, you know,
they unless you were there, you didn't get to see
a lot.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Of it because we weren't on TV and we were.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
But but the atmospheres during those years and during that
year especially was it was amazing. And uh but but
coach he had a he had he had a thing.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
You know, we talked to a psycho psychologist.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
He had a sports psychologist that came in and uh,
you know, we all took tests.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
And and make.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
A long story short, you know, he would, uh, he
would bring you into his office.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
He brought each one of us individually, and he would
set and tell.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
You, you know, what made you tig you know how you were.
I mean, you know, we we had maybe an hour
long conversation about him telling you, and you got up
walking out of his office thinking, this guy, what what
is That's amazing.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Because about yourself you probably didn't even know well you know,
I mean.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
It was things that you subconsciously didn't even think about,
but when he talked about it, you were like, well, yeah,
that's the way it is. But it was amazing what
they can do from that. And uh. But but he
his workouts and things, you know, they broke us down physically,
but it's to make you mentally tough because there's so
(20:42):
many things that I mean, you know, it's a mental
there's so much that's a part of the game that's
mental and toughness especially and when everybody else is wanting
to quit, you know, we were pushing through and that's when,
you know, because he would tell us, you know, everybody
it hits a wall at some point in time. Some
(21:02):
teams it's earlier than others. Some may go thirty some
thirty five, some thirty six, but eventually you'll have your.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
Run and you know that's when you beat them.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
And that's how that's how we played and and you
know we played with reckless abandon as they would say,
right and uh and you know we but we But
practices were so tough that game days were easy.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
I've heard you say that.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Yeah, day off basically basically, yeah, it was the fun.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
It was the fun.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
Unless you lost. Then then it was on. I'm sure
for the next practice.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
If you lost, the well, well it was a listen
win or lose, it was on.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got to pay some bills here
real quick.
Speaker 1 (21:46):

mentioned Journey. Do you know that Journey is going to
be coming into Lobell in October. It's like the their
farewell tours. So Richie, if you want to come hang
out and watch some Journey, I'll get you some tickets
if you want to make the trip over to Lobell.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Hey, well, I may. I may do that.
Speaker 4 (22:57):
I'll find out more information about it and see if
I'm a little bit but I might like.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
To do that.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
All right, that sounds good.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
We were we were talking about Luke Combs, and you
said that you also like him, and he wrote a
song for his wife, And I said, you know what
that that that'll get you the girl every time you
write a song about a girl, that'll that'll get you
the girl every time. And there is a you brought
that up, and it reminded me of this thing that
I heard on the way into work today. There was
a commercial that ran for something called Smile Tunes, and
(23:27):
I was like, what is this? And then as I
was listening to the commercial, I go, oh, yeah, buddy
of mine did this. So apparently, Richie, if you're like
in a relationship or if you're trying to win a
girl over. Let's say you're in a relationship, you messed up,
you got into a big argument.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
Yeah, you can.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
You can send off like details about this other girl
that you want written a song about, and you can
send it in in this AI, uh you know, artificial
intelligence program.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Yeah, well, Jim generate something well.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Will generate will generate a song and it'll sound like
it was professionally done in a studio and everything, and
it's based off the details that you give them. So
you can give them these details to an AI company
and they'll make this sad, you know, sappy country song
and you can give it to your girl as an apology.
So and a buddy of mine, actually a buddy of
(24:19):
mine actually did this. He let us hear this. We
were hanging out. We were hanging out on a Saturday
night at my buddy's garage and he had some people
over and he goes, listen to this, and I go,
what are we listening to? He goes, I had a
big argument with my girlfriend.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
I sent off.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
This information to this company and they gave me a
country music song, and I gave it to her, he said.
By the second verse, she was crying. He said, she
was in tears and all was forgiven. I'm going, you
know what, man, maybe they're onto something with this company.
You know, if you can't write a song on yourself,
to set it off and they'll write it for you.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
Yeah, I mean I think probably need to buy a
stock in that company.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
So good, that's like he said.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
By the second verse, you know, yeah, he's not only
back in, he's really yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
Yeah, the dog house and off the couch and.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
He's a hero. He comes from a zero to the hero.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (25:17):
Uh, now, let me ask you about this five year
rule that's now in the place in n C Double A.
You know, the COVID year kind of threw things off.
You had guys that were playing college sports for six years,
sometimes some of them seven years. And now the n
C Double A is going enough enough, let's just make
it everybody gets five years.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Do you like that rule?
Speaker 1 (25:40):
You know, because we now got other guys that are going, well,
what about me? You know, I just finished up my
fourth year. You know, you got Denzel Aberdeen that was
here last year for Kentucky and now he's back at
Florida and he's trying to play for another year. So
it's kind of created this this chaos to where you
got guys going, well, now what about me? Yeah, you
said five years? Well, I just finished up four years?
(26:02):
Do I get a fifth year? And there's no definitive
ruling on this yet, and you got college football season
starting in two weeks and guys still trying to play
a fifth year.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
It's chaos right now.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
It really is chaos.
Speaker 4 (26:15):
And and I can see where those guys it would
be saying what about me? The guys that are just graduating,
So I can understand the argument either way. But you
know what we need is some definites. We need some
rules so that people can understand who's eligible, who's not eligible,
(26:37):
who's going to be able to play, because, for instance,
in our case, I mean, you know, if we can
add a Mark Mitchell or somebody like that to the
roster this late in the game, be uh, it would
be unbelievable but or unbelievably helpful, I guess. But but
I can certainly see their argument. And you know, obviously
(27:00):
yesterday Woo mensing something about us old timer's.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
We got nothing.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Yeah, everything was the same, and you know, they went
back so far, and then I guess for the rest
of us it was just oh well yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
But that's the thing, right, you had to draw a
line somewhere.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
I mean, let's you just want to go back to
the beginning of time and anybody that's still alive.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
But you know, I'm.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
Thinking, well, okay, you had your four years. You went
in to college with the understanding that you would play
for four years when you were a freshman.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
You got to you got to cut it off somewhere.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
So yeah, for me, for me, Richie, and maybe I
don't know if you agree about on this, But I
think that the guys that were just here, in my opinion,
they should be done.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
I think you got to start somewhere.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
And these guys coming back for wanting to come back
for a fifth year just throws a wrinkle on everything.
And like I said, what if they agree to have
these guys come back for a fifth year in the
middle of October uber or November. Well, football seasons already
a month or two in. You're gonna have guys that
come back, like like Alex Safari for Kentucky. We don't
know if he's going to be eligible to come back
for a fifth year or not. But at some point, though,
(28:11):
you gotta draw a line somewhere. You got to cut
it off.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
At some point they're gonna have to and they're gonna
have to make a decision at some point. I mean,
because like you said, I mean we tee it up
here in football, what two weeks.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Two or three weeks?
Speaker 3 (28:24):
Yeah, yeah, you know, two or three weeks.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
So it would be nice to know, you know, what
your roster looks like and who you're gonna be able
to have out on the field, because you know, I
was I was listening to Tom this morning somebody was
talking about, you know, it's it's kind of dangerous if
you play those kind of people that you don't know
is going to be for sure eligible, because you could win,
(28:50):
you know, two or three games, and then all of
a sudden they're rude ineligible. So you you were playing
somebody that was ineligible and may have to forfeit those games.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
I go Alabama last year, right with Nate Oates.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
Yes, yes, I mean it's there's there's just there's just
a lot of uncertainty, and I would like to see,
you know, some kind of continuity where where coaches and
players and everybody understands where they are and you know
what they can and can't do.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
Yeah, it's definitely got a lot more complicated over the
last few years. We got a couple of calls on
the line. Let's uh, let's take one or two. Let's
go to Doug. Doug, you're on what's up? You got
a question for Richie?
Speaker 6 (29:32):
Hey, Ritchie, it's Doug.
Speaker 3 (29:33):
I live.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
I heard Spokane, but I grew up in Barberville and
oh the eighty eighty eight Food City Mountain Classic. Oh yeah,
I think you guys beat I think you guys beaten.
On Central by like forty that year in the championship game. Yeah,
but then the next year off the UK and always forgive.
(29:58):
But guys, you want to talk about rockstar status, that
is rock star right there you're talking to So you
were huge back then. I just I've waited a long
time to call and talk to you over the years,
but just it was amazing growing up in that time.
Basketball back then was just different.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
I'll tell you what. Richie is still a rock star too, because.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
You go out with Richie and like absolutely everybody wants
to take a picture with Richie. It doesn't matter if
they're sixty years old or you know, ten years old,
they all want to.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Go and meet Richie.
Speaker 6 (30:30):
So yeah, absolutely, thanks for the call. Dark Well, well
good talk to you.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
Got listen.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
I appreciate you saying that, I really do. And obviously
I'm Barbaraville is you know right here, And we played
against the Nock Central and Barbarville both in the thirteenth
region and absolutely like that.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
Once.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
Once I went to UK, I represented all those folks
that I played against, and you know, those folks were
some of my biggest supporters, and so.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
I said, absolutely we sure were.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
And you know, I love all these folks here in
a month, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
Doug.
Speaker 6 (31:05):
Yeah, thanks, thanks Doug.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
You know, Richie, you and I were talking during the break.
You said you haven't had the chance to uh to
talk or not to talk, but to uh to see
this practice, this team, this current team practice. What did
you think about though, Mark Pope's decision to just open
up practice, uh, just spontaneously last week and you had
two or three hundred fans come out there and get
to watch the team. That was kind of a cool
(31:29):
innovative thing that Mark Pope did to allow the fans
just to randomly come in and watch a practice of
five on five scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
Absolutely, I mean, Coach Pope is he's doing some some
neat things and trying to get to, you know, get
the fans excited again and get them involved and and
I think some of the things he's been doing has
really been, you.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
Know, been great.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
And I and obviously as a fan, uh, you know,
I was a fan growing up, and then I got
to live my dream and play there, and I've to
see it from both sides, and you know, obviously now
I'm a fan again, so to be able to go
in and see the guys and get a look at him.
That's something that very many people get to do, especially
(32:16):
before the season and all. So I thought it was
a very cool move by coach Pope, and I'm sure
that those people really enjoyed it.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
Physicality seems to be the thing that everybody's worried about
with this team. He's pretty much set as much himself
physicality and not having like a lockdown defender.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
But the shooting to offset that is incredible.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
I mean, we were getting reports from that practice that
Mam Chilovich shot something like twenty eight for twenty nine
from three, which is I mean, that's absurd, that's unheard of.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
You know, that guy, he is an unbelievable shooter.
Speaker 4 (32:50):
And when we signed him, he actually, I mean it
was a game changer for us because he makes a
defense play a different way because you cannot leave him,
and if you give him just a little bit of space,
he makes tough you know, he makes threes with people
on him. So, uh, you know, he's just an unbelievable scorer.
(33:12):
But but at some.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
Point, you know, I truly believe and I'm I'm.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
Kind of old school about this, Uh, I still believe
that you have to be able to play some defense
and rebound the basketball.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
I mean, those two things.
Speaker 4 (33:24):
If you if you can rebound and play some defense,
but you but but in this day and age, you
have to have shooters and you have to be able
to put the ball in the basket. So, you know,
I'm kind of the opinion that these guys are good
enough athletes that over the course of the year, I
think defensively, we will.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
We will have to get better.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
Yeah, yeah, and I think that that's certainly a possibility.
But but I I like the fact that we have
shooters because it's a lot tougher to teach people to
shoot than it is to play defense.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
I think this is going to be one of those
teams that probably wins a lot of games with scores.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
In the eighties. You know, just just got get it.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
You're not going to stop them, but you got to
just out You're not gonna stop on the defensive end,
but you just got to out shoot him.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
From behind the arc.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
And if it comes down to a three point shooting contest.
From everything that I've heard, I feel pretty good about
the team.
Speaker 4 (34:18):
Uh well, yeah, I mean especially uh you know, you
get mom sale that's going he he can really he
can really fill it up. And uh, you know, I've
heard good things about Alex Wilkins as well. He's he's
shooting the ball real well, especially from the three, and
I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do. And
(34:39):
obviously Zoom has to has to be able to uh
distribute to basketball and and and be uh some somewhat
of h I mean, he has to be able to defend.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
In the SEC.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
And that's you know, that's what a lot of people
had uh concern about with him. But I think, I mean,
he looks strong. I think he's gonna be Okay. I'm
looking forward to seeing what this team can do. I
think our ceiling is really high, but because there's so
many unknowns, but so we'll just have to see how
(35:16):
some of these guys develop. But we are going to
need somebody to step up and play some rollss.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
All right, We've got to take a break.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
Final segment coming up next if you want to get
into eight five, nine two eight oho twenty two eighty seven.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
Richie Farmer joining me on the show today.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
KSR is coming up next to ten o'clock until then
it's the KSR pre Show. We'll be right back, all right,
welcome back, final segments of the KSR pre Show. Here's
a random question for Richie. Has Richie ever had a pedicure?
Speaker 6 (35:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (35:43):
I think I have had.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
I think I know what we're asking us, but go ahead.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
Well, I have had a pedicure before, but I've only
had a couple.
Speaker 3 (35:51):
I mean, I haven't had many.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Okay, I think the reason they're asking is because I
don't know if you saw the interview with Mark Pope
and Jeff Goodman, but he's that while they were in
New York, he went to get a pedicure and he
wouldn't say by name the person that he went with,
but he said it was a guy that was one
of the most powerful men in college basketball and someone
who is a mentor. So everybody's trying to put the
(36:14):
hints together and they think that, maybe, uh, Mark Pope.
Speaker 2 (36:17):
And Rick Patino went to get pedicures in New York City.
You could you see coach Patino doing that? Is there
any chance?
Speaker 4 (36:24):
Well, I mean maybe a chance, maybe a chance, Okay,
it's possible. Who knows these days. Yeah, but there's nothing
wrong with a good pedicure. You got to take care
of your feet.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
When I've had a couple, I was in uh, I
was in Florida, So I thought, you know what, I'm
in Florida. It's safe, right, I don't have to worry
about being like somebody recognizing me or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
And I swear, I swear to you, Richie.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
I sat down in this chair to get a pedicure
and I look across from me and there's a guy
that goes Shannon. I go, oh, god, no, oh, I'm
so embarrassed. But then I started thinking about it. I go, well,
he can't say anything because he's getting one to Yeah.
So I'm like, you know what, all right, you know
just but I was like, let's just keep that between
(37:11):
you and me.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
That's what I told him. Let's just let's pretend we
never were here.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
I think that was kind of the way it was
at pointant time.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
But I've only had a couple and it's been a
long time since since.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
I have All Right, let's go to the phones eight five,
nine to eight oh twenty two eighty. So I bet
John Shorts had a pedicure or two over the years, haven't.
Speaker 5 (37:29):
You, John, haven't had one.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
No, you're missing man. What's going on?
Speaker 3 (37:35):
John? Oh?
Speaker 5 (37:37):
Nothing mess? Ready for all those for football, women's in basketball,
all those four seasons. Yet I don't know I was
even winning championship and every sport these seasons, sport and
varsity sports.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
All right, Well, John, John, I just sent I just
sent in yesterday my prediction for the football team's record,
and I think I've got us going six and six,
which is probably optimistic, but I don't think that's nearly
as I domistic as you are. So how what do
you think the football team's record is going to be
this year?
Speaker 3 (38:04):
John?
Speaker 5 (38:06):
Well, Well, you used to say it's fifty nieto all
the football fandius that would say whatever regulars is, so
be underfeed in whatever regulars. So we underfeed, as I believe.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
So however many games we played, John or says we're
going to be undefeated.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
So, uh, you know, Richie, Richie and I were talking John.
I was telling Richie that you know the scores of
games going way way back, and Richie you wanted to
ask John if he knew the score to what game?
Speaker 4 (38:36):
Well, I was wondering if he remembered the year my
sophomore year when we played LSU at home when they
had Shaquille O Nel and Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts and
those guys.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
If he remembers that home store.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
That, John, do you remember it would have been I
guess nineteen ninety that year, Yes, it was.
Speaker 5 (38:55):
It was two hundreds. He's right, Yes, they came first
of this, taking ten seconds identification. Nobly right here, don't
miss this, and that's you referred to me to free throws.
But he person say, he's taking it. That's right. Then
(39:17):
they just took it the SA case. Nobody was a
ten second did was for fatals free throws? But he said, no,
leave right here? Do I miss this one?
Speaker 3 (39:25):
That is unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Listen to that because I googled that and it says
here's what AI says about it. Yeah, I says on
February fifteenth, nineteen ninety, which John probably knew that the
date of the game too. It says a depleted Kentucky
Ocasts men basketball team under first year coach Rick Patino
pulled off a stunning one hundred to ninety five upset
against powerhouse l s U.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
So there you go. John was right, Yeah, yeah, that's right.
Speaker 4 (39:53):
And I made those three throws down down the stretch
because you know they you know, Dale Brown had recruited
me heavily to.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
Come learn, so he was trying to play a mind
he thought.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
Fouling me and you know, doing it on purpose that
he was getting my head. But he found out different.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Yep, John, thanks for the call. We appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
Hey, thanks John, Great American, buddy.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
You're great American.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
All right.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
I was trying to get back, all right, see you later, John.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
All right?
Speaker 1 (40:23):
Did you see that bringing back and Opening Day Marathon
for college basketball?
Speaker 2 (40:27):
Richie?
Speaker 3 (40:27):
I love this.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
It's going to be starting. John.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
You gotta hang up the phone because I can't hang
up since I got Richie on the line, So you
have to hang up yourself. Opening Day Marathon is going
to be starting on Monday, November two, at midnight and
it's going to go all throughout the night, into the morning,
all throughout the day.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
I loved when the ESPN did this.
Speaker 1 (40:44):
And this is a field of sixty eight that's putting
this on, I believe, and they're bringing it back where
you can on that day the kickoff to or the
tip off to basketball season, you could be up at
three o'clock in the morning watching college basketball. I think
it's great for the game and great for a lot
of these teams, Richie. That I mean, otherwise, when would
you watch Buthune Cookman basketball? You know, but you can
watch it if there's nothing else on, you'd be up
(41:06):
and watching it. So I love that they're bringing that back.
Speaker 3 (41:10):
I do too.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
I think it's awesome, and I think it's awesome for
the fans. And you know, you can't get enough basketball.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
Yeah, Richie, we're running out of time here, but I
really appreciate you jumping on with me today. And you
knocked it out of the park as always, so what
to do it again sometime in the future.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
But big thanks for jumping on here with me.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
Hey, listen anytime, Shannon. I certainly appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (41:33):
And again, thank you to all the fans out there,
Sport Cats, and I mean, I'm really looking forward. I'm
super excited about football too. Let me tell you, I
love Will Stein. I love what he's doing over there.
I cannot wait to see what he does.
Speaker 3 (41:48):
So thank you, Shannon.
Speaker 1 (41:49):
All Right, Richie, take care, We'll talk to you later,
all right. That is Richie Farmer and KSR coming up next.
Thanks for listening to the pre show back tomorrow with
Cameron Mills. He's going to be joining me.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
We'll talk then
