(00:23):
Have you turned to the internet rabbithole but had to walk away because it
was just so overwhelming? While you'rein the right place, I'm your host,
Rachel lash Well, as entrepreneur andhealthy living expert, joined by my
co host Melissa chris Bell, atrained natural path the nutrition expert. Together,
we have thirty years of experience coachingclients, teaching healthcare providers how to
create their own signature programs, creatinglearning spaces for health coaches, building integrative

(00:46):
clinics, as well as writing andspeaking in the functional health space. We
hope to inspire you to live yourbest life and teach you how to live
it proactively by living undoctored. Whatdoes it mean to live undoctored? We
are not here to tell you tonever go to the doctor. We're not
giving advice that should take the placeof your medical doctor's recommendation. We're here
to give you a different perspective toconsider and support you on your health and

(01:08):
well less journey. Lets what doesit mean to live undoctored? For you
to me, it means taking careof yourself. It means taking care of
your family. It means taking responsibilityfor your health and the health of your
family through simple principles that anyone canfollow. Teaching people when to go to
the doctor and when to reach fortheir home pantry or their own medicine cabinet.

(01:32):
There's a quote from a colleague mentorand the practice sheher that taught me
body typing way back in the day, and she said, this good health
is not an unobtainable privilege meant tobe savored only by the fortunate. It
is a right that should be enjoyedby anyone who is willing to take the
time to learn how to take careof his or her own body. And

(01:52):
that was from doctor Dickie Fuller. And really that's the whole premise of the
way you practice, the way thatmy late husband, doctor Ash practice,
and I know you teach doctors allacross the country a lot of these ways
you teach them about nutraceuticals, youteach them about more holistic ways of living.
In your opinion, what would youconsider, say the five to seven

(02:13):
pillars of health. I would sayhydration, sleep, non toxic foods,
movement or exercise, fun, anddietary supplements. Having all of those areas
covered is really the best way togood health. And Melissa, one of
the things we also hear is youhave to drink eight glasses of water a
day. Do we really need thatmuch or what do you recommend? I
always laugh when I hear people sayI'm trying to do my best to drink

(02:36):
eight glasses of water. I don'tknow who came up with that. I
don't know where that came from. What I learned is that half of your
body weight innounces is the gold standard. If that ends up being eight glasses,
that's awesome, But I don't knowthat it actually equals eight glasses.
I mean, how big is theglass, how small is the glass?
I don't know. Half your bodyweight innounces is a good rule of them.

(03:00):
Your current body weight, not yourideal body weight. Correct correct where
you are to day. In termsof hydration, A lot of drinks can
actually be dehydrating. I know alot of people start their day off with
a cup of coffee. What drinkscan have dehydrating properties? What should people
look out for when trying to stayhydrated. You know, coffee is not
the demon here. Caffeine is.So even if you start your day with

(03:22):
tea, but it's a highly caffeinatedtea. You start your day with these
drinks in cans, those energy drinks, weird wacky flavors and weird wacky logos
on them. Those kinds of drinksare dehydrating because they have caffeine in them.
Not only that they dehydrating, it'ssome of them just use the worst
form of the nutrient possible, whichjust doesn't do you any good there.

(03:44):
So you know, that's beyond thedehydration thing. But for every halfinated drink
you have, oh, coasonas, pepsicolas, you know, all those kind
of carbonated brown whatever sugarine drinks, those things have caffeine in them as well.
For every caffeinated beverage you have, plan to drink equal that amount of
water. It can neutralize or counteractthat dehydration is it's a rule of thumb.

(04:05):
Again, if you have an eightounce caffeine drink. Plan to drink
at extra eight ounces of water tokind of balance it out, is what
I'm saying. I'm your host,Rachel Lash joined by my co host Melissa

know sometimes we hear six to eighthours, some people get more, some
people get less. What are somegreat sleep tips that you have for us?

(05:33):
You know, first and foremost forme is to have a very cool
sleeping environment. And I don't meancool like esthetically pleasing from a functuit perspective.
That's necessary too, but I'm talkingtemperature cool, like mausoleum type cool.
Is the way I like my bedroomat this point. You know,
don't wear the leggings and the tightknit kind of clothing that's not going to

(05:54):
benefit your sleep. Making sure thatyou have organic cotton sheets, those soaky
type sheets from different materials. Someof them can have plastics in them,
some of them can be non breathable, so they're not very cooling. Either,
take a look at your mattress.Your mattress might not be as cooling
and as beneficial as you would likeit to be. And a lot of
mattresses too. Now they're making organicmattresses, but they have chemicals sprayed on

(06:18):
the mattresses. So a lot oftimes we find that people have allergies or
reactions to the chemicals that are sprayedon the mattresses. So the flame retardant
materials, you know, it's notnecessarily great breathing in for however many hours
a night you're sleeping on that mattress, So we hydration sleep. And let's
talk a little bit about movement.Let's just do true or false. More

(06:39):
exercise helps you lose more weight? No, I wish that were the case.
It actually can have the opposite effect. More exercise does not mean faster
weight loss or more weight loss sendingyour body into extra cortisol releasing state.
You can tax your adrenal glands. You have to take care of your body.
You can create sus for yourself wherethere wasn't one to begin with.

(07:01):
All of the cardio cardio cardio thatdoesn't necessarily need more weight loss. And
then we have to look at.Are we looking at fat wells or are
we looking at weight loss? Becausejust getting all skill and losing weight.
I mean, you could do avitamin C flush and do that. That's
not what I'm recommending. I'm justsaying that it is possible, and you
can lose some weight because you're losinga lot of water, but that's not
losing fat. And losing the fatis what the goal is to get to

(07:24):
the optimal health is to build themuscle, gain the muscle, and lose
the fat. Just like everything else, there's an even exchange. There's a
fine balance. So if lots ofcardio is a no no, what are
some reasonable suggestions? It is reasonableto use yoga because you can use your
own body weight to get that weightbearing exercise. I know there are ladies
out there that are like, Idon't want to lift weights because I don't

(07:46):
want to be beefy, I don'twant to be bulky. You know,
I don't want to look like thisor that or whatever. You're not going
to just lifting the weights. Sittingon an exercise ball helps to engage the
core. There are tons of exerciseapps at this point online that can help
you with some of those exercises.Every exercise can be modified. You know,
if you've been completely sedentary, you'vebeen kind of stagnant, don't go

(08:11):
to the CrossFit box and think thatyou're going to hang out with those folks
like on day one. Work yourway into those kinds of things. You
know, you can run and jumpin your driveway or in your yard,
you know, on the sidewalk somethinglike that. You can do tai chi.
Tai Chi is movement. It helpswith stretching. It also helps with
energy. There's some other components totai chi and chee gong you know,
that are beneficial for the mind aswell as the body. Sure, false,

(08:35):
I just need to balance my hormonesto lose weight. Wouldn't that be
nice? It would be very nice. But we can all just take a
hormone pill and my hormones are balanced, and that's the end of it,
right. There are plenty of thingsthat we can do, like hydrating and
sleeping. If you're not making sleepyour priority, your hormones are not going
to be balanced. It it can't. So these pillars and these principles that

(08:56):
we're talking about, these are importantfor every human life form. This is
the formula and the little tiny pieceswithin the formula are different for each human
body. But you have to havethis formula and you have to get your
little piece dialed in for your bodyand getting all this stuff dialed in.

(09:16):
Talk about food for a minute. What's the deal with eat your protein or
eat in a deficit? You know, I know there's keto, there's an
old paleo which is sort of youknow, re emerging again as a trend.
There's lots of trends. There's lotsof fads. What are your recommendations
here for someone just starting out oreven someone that's not interested in tracking their
macros and their micros and you know, all of that calories in calories out,

(09:41):
there's nothing wrong with that. Thekicker is you have to incorporate the
rest of these strategies because you canwork the calories in calories out by your
movement and by the food that youeat. But again, if you're not
hydrating, you're robbing yourself. Ifyou're not making your sleep a priority,
you're robbing yourself. If you're notdoing fun things, things that make you
laugh, things that bring you joy, you're robbing yourself. The game is

(10:03):
bigger than that you have to getall of these pieces. I'm your host,
Rachel Lash, joined by my cohost Melissa Crispell, living on Doctor
Here on War. If you strugglewith occasional digestive discomfort, I used to

Undoctorate sponsored by Pure Essentials. I'myour host Rachel Lash joined by my co
host Melissa Chris Valve was trained asa natural path and nutrition specialist. How
do you calculate your calories in that'ssimple. Multiply your current body weight by
fifteen. These are the calories thatyou would need to maintain. So if
you wanted to stay whatever it isyou are right now, that's your calorie

(11:30):
need. Reduce that by five hundred, and that would help you to create
a goal till nose weight. Reallyinteresting. And then Melissa, what about
protein? How do we calculate that? I know some people eat such and
such amount of grams, and I'mlike, how do I convert it to
grahams when I'm sitting out at arestaurant. I think it sort of takes
practice to know the grams to amount. But how would somebody calculate that?

(11:52):
Multiply your current weight by point threesix So somebody that weighs one hundred and
fifty pounds would need four grams ofprotein per day. Now, I know
that sounds like a lot. Peopleare gonna be like fifty four grams of
protein. A six ounce piece ofsalmon is thirty four grams of protein.
So if you think about a nicesalad, so you have some green leaf

(12:13):
let us maybe some spinach, becausewe're going to do a couple of different
things here. We're going to alkalonizethe body by the foods that we eat,
because they have alkalonizing or acid offine effects in the body. So
we want to make sure we're choosingthose fruits and vegetables wisely. So we
could do a greens mix. Wecould add some beans, so we could
put some chickpeas. You could bathethose in some avocado oil, put some

(12:33):
spices on them, put them inthe oven and roast them. There's your
crun cheese. Now we're going toavoid the croutons, so we're avoiding that
gluten. You could put some onionsin there, some mushrooms in there.
Those are helpful or detoxification and methylationpurposes. You have a leftover roasted sweet
potato, you could cut that upand put that in there. That's some
natural sugar, and that's also somebiber. You could put roasted beets in

(12:54):
there, and then you could laya piece of grilled salmon across that.
So you're getting multiple purposed foods inthe same bowl. And that's not hard
to do. It really isn't.It does take practice. You'd have to
plan, and I know at thecenter doctor h should always put people on
an alkaline forming diet at least fora few weeks, just to reset their
system. But in general, whatwe're talking about is really creating a common

(13:18):
sense diet food that works for yourbody, meat, fruit, vegetables.
Cutting out an entire food group isnot the way our bodies work. Eating
one piece of cake. You didn'tget fat from that one piece of cake.
You didn't get sick because you atea handful of popcorn. That's not
how it happened. It happened fromexcess. It happened from over use and

(13:39):
over time. Just making the exception. I can do that, Oh,
I can do that. My metabolismcan do this. I'll run this much
and work that off and do thisbartering system in my head. I can
have this many calories because I'm goingto run this many miles. You mean
miles. You'd have to run tooutrun some of the calorie intakes. At
times it's just not possible. Butthe useless game to play really it is.

(14:01):
Yeah, you can't out exercise apoor diet. Another thing that we
see a lot for high cholesterol statins. What are your thoughts on that.
I just feel like it's something thatpeople are being pushed statins left and right
for high cholesterol. You said itin the very beginning of the show.
We're not telling people you don't haveto go to the doctor. We're not
giving your medical advice that should replaceyour medical doctors prescriptions and your health plan.

(14:24):
But if you wanted a different perspectiveand you wanted to talk to your
doctor about it, and if yournumbers are so high, if they are
deemed out of control, there's someair quotes around there that everybody can't see.
There are times when medications are necessary. Take the medication, but talk
to your doctor about a plan tonot need that medication for a long period
of time. If your numbers areslightly over what the optimal is, talk

(14:46):
to your doctor now about lifestyle, dietary choices, those kinds of things,
and give it a three month windowto practice and to do it differently.
It's going to take your body, your blood three months, ninety days to
anyway. So how about talking aboutthe dietary choices, the things that you
can do. I mean, ifyou're taking a stat in your you have
a highcholesterol number, you know, what can you do from a dietary perspective.

(15:09):
You can increase your fiber, right, you can cut down on those
useless cards that you're having. Youcan incorporate some movement. It's honesty time
at that point, are you exercisingat all or are things kind of sedentary?
Take a look at that and talkabout that with your provider. Maybe
talk about looking at putting in acoque ten coenz on Q ten is beneficial
with helping to reduce those cholesterol numbers. Talk with your doctor about adding that

(15:33):
and what that amount would be.Yeah, and those conversations are really important.
I know, doctor Ash use alot of pure essentials, Vitamin C,
the Pure Essentials courses and to reduceinflammation along with the COQ ten.
You know, and in terms ofpure essentials, some of the flagship products,
what would you consider them to bein and why I would consider the
vitamin C, magnesium and the newdigestives to be the flagship products. The

(15:56):
vitamin C is formulated with buffering mineralslike mabesium, calcium zinc. Those help
to not make the vitamin C soacidic when you mix it in water and
then drink it. And it's interestingyou bring up that point, Melissa,
because I know a lot of timespeople associate something like a lemon or citrus
with being acidifying when actually it worksin your body as alkaline forming. Absolutely,

(16:21):
but it's not always like that. There are things that people think would
be good for you, maybe theydon't know alkalinizing or acidifying. But think
about spinach. How many people stuffspinach and green apples and celery into a
juicer and that's their juice. Thosehandfuls of spinach are acidifying. So someone
who's doing big giant chunks of thatand they're doing it daily, that's not

(16:44):
helpful. So looking at an acidalkaline food chart and choosing wisely choosing the
foods that are alkaline producing inside thebody, I am not supporting going out
and buying alkaline pH eight water andthat kind of thing. So what's something
is on the outside of the bodyis not the same. Once it gets
to work inside the body. I'myour host Rachel Lash, joined by my

I'm your host Rachel Lash joined bymy co host Melissa Chris Valve was

(18:12):
trained as a natural path and nutritionspecialist. So getting back to the vitamin
C, I'd love you to tellus why Pure Essentials it's different, and
then what are some of the thingsto look out for within vitamin c's.
I feel like this is one ofthe vitamins that is so misunderstood in terms
of quality and efficacy. But thebuffering minerals are part of it. The
other part of it is there areno additional flavors. There's nothing fake in

(18:34):
it, so artificial flavoring. Thereare a lot of vitamin c's out on
the market that you can buy inany store. They also have sugar in
them. The sugar competes for thesame docking station in that receptor that the
vitamin C does, So if you'reloading up on the sugar with the vitamin
C, it's not helping you viaminc. It's super super important. It helps
to reduce inflammation. It helps toreduce free radicals. It's the vacuum glator,

(18:59):
the nature's vacuum gleaner. It sucksall of the issues from the tissues.
It is a precursor to our owncollagen production. It is a hydrator.
It's an antioxidant of all antioxidants. It sacrifices itself in order for these
other nutrients to come in, andit's a chaperone. It opens the doors
for other nutrients to be able todo their jobs. And in terms of

(19:21):
core products, you also mentioned magnesium, and we're talking about the quality of
products. Magnesium oxide is the cheapestquality. It's inexpensive, it's not well
absorbed. It's just a low endmagnesium oxide. We're talking about what is
Pure Essentials you use and why isthis magnesium different. The Pure Essentials have
magnesium glycinate, which can be goodfor migraines, sleep, anxiety, inflammation.

(19:45):
Someone who has a magnesium deficiency.Pure Essentials also has magnesium citrate.
It is the best, the moststudied form. It has a very good
absorption. It can help with bowelissues. You wouldn't want to take it
in high dosis. It's going tohelp from a laxetive perspect Pure Essential uses
magnesium mallite, which can be goodfor fibromyalgia chronic utique. It also has

(20:06):
a very good absorption, It iscell energizing, and Pure Essentials uses magnesium
a score bait. Magnesium a scorebait is a non acidic form of vitamin
C, so we put the vitaminC in there as well. This is
vital in your body's collagen formation. It's vital for amino acid metabolism, for
hormone synthesis, and also to helpimprove the body's immune system and immune response.

(20:32):
The cool thing about Pure Essentials isall four of these forms are in
the same capsule, so you don'thave to go to the store and figure
out which one do I need thisweek? What's going on with my system?
Now, let me buy one ofthese, and one of these and
one of these. They're all inthe same and they're all in reasonable amounts
so that your body will be ableto pick up on the one that it
needs and be able to absorb itand use it from there, and you

(20:53):
don't have to do the guesswork. So it really, Melissa, it's really
the highest quality magnesium and possibly getBut is it possible to make a supplement
looks absolutely no fillers or excipients.I don't believe that it's possible to have
absolutely zero excipient, zero filler. What I do believe is that you can

(21:14):
be purposeful in the excipients and thefillers that you use. There are nutrients
that when they go through the machineto be deposited into that little capsule.
You know, think about a capsulethat you take, regardless of the brand.
There are two pieces of it.You pull it apart, and there's
powder in each one. So whenit goes through that machine to go into
that capsule, some of those nutrientsare very sticky and they would melt on

(21:37):
a machine as it's blowing that powderthrough there to put into those capsules.
So you have to have something inthere for that purpose, and what Pure
Essentials has done is chosen to useaccipients to help that process. Pure Essentials
is using something that's either food basedor plant based. In most situations you'll
see bamboo, leaf and stem becausethat can be that component within the machine

(22:02):
to help those nutrients so that theydon't melt all over the place. Purposeful
things to help deliver the nutrient forms. Basic question but I know it's fun
that people are interested in. Whatsupplements should we not take at night before
I go to bed? What areyour thoughts? That's a brilliant question.
It's super easy. The cell energizers. Don't take the cell energizers before you
go to bed. B like Btwelve C, D, a multi vitamin,

(22:26):
anything with energy, herbs in it, zinc, calcium. Don't take
those before you go to bed.I take vitamins C towards the evening and
same with D. I sleep fairlywell, but I know if I take
B or a multi vitamin, Iwill be up all night. What supplements
are good to take at night?Magnesium malate that's a really really good one,
and oh, by the way,it's in Faery Essentials ultra magnesium.

(22:48):
Taking your omegas at night. Omegasare good for helping to reduce inflammation and
they don't have any type of cellexcitability in them. So you could take
your omegas at night if you wantedto. You can also take one of
Pure Essentials new products, pure Zen. That's right, Pure Essentials has an

So Melissa, can you tell uswhat's in pure Zen that makes it
good? First, Sleep Pureson wasn'tdesigned specifically for sleep. It's more of
a cause and effect type product. The formulation has a calming effect on stress,
It can help to improve mood,it can promote a balance within the
autonomic nervous system and the overall brainhealth. And so when those things are

(24:18):
happening, you naturally then are usheredinto a better night sleep. So Pierzen
has a gentle blend of nutrient likeB six gabba. It also has adaptogenic
herbs like ashwaganda. It also hasbamboo whole plant extract that's in there as
our accipient. It has some adrenalsupport B six helpful for the adrenals.

(24:41):
There's some healthy ending in there. So all of those together helped to do
all of those things, which wouldthen be a natural way for you to
relax and enjoy a good night sleep. Even the best food can still lean

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
