Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight, presented by Rosedale Bank.
Each week we hear from one local business owner letting
us know where they are in their business journey and
how they got there. I'm here today with Al Kincaid,
founder of Valor Home and a son, Adam Kincaid, CEO
of Valor Home. Welcome. Thank you both for being here.
First off, tell everybody what the company is, what the

(00:21):
company does.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah, so we're a a veteran focused roofing residential construction company.
I'm been doing it for decades now. Or Service is
abled veteran in small business. We focus on empowering, employeing
and recognizing our military, our veteran customer base. Our customer
base is comprised of largely veterans and military connected. We

(00:43):
do roofs for everybody. Anybody cares about what we do.
We love help with the mission we've in turn over
the past couple of years. In twenty twenty two, we
gave wings to Operation Raids the roof which is now
a standalone nonprofit and next year we'll donate roughly a
half a million dollars alone just to our veterans in
the DMV.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
That's fantastic, all right. So so basically you guys do
roofing mostly. That's your main thing, rightings.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Roofings in need. Absolutely. You know, when our house is
being built, you have the foundation, you have the framing,
and then before you can do anything internally, you're putting
your roof on. So we know how important it is
to do to do a roof, right, You're gonna do
it once with us, never again as long as you're
staying in that house, and it's the only only product
you'll have on the exterior home. That's a true lifetime

(01:28):
warranty and we'll keep you warm and protected.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
That's fantastic, man. I'm glad to have both of you on.
Your business has been successful for so many years. And
of course the background of helping veterans of the military. Ow,
what is your background with the military, To let everybody
know where this kind of all started.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I joined the Navy to back in the day Vietnam
War and stuff. They were drafting in the Army and
the Marine Corps and said, no, I'm not going to
do that. I'm going to join the Navy to the world.
Long story, short years in the Navy, I spent two
years with the Marine Corps, oh and one year in
Vietnam with them.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Wow. Thank you very much for your service. And I
do want to mention Adam and al the things, the
great things you do for our veterans, and one of them,
of course is is raised the roof in which, well, Adam,
you explained exactly what you guys do every few times
during the year.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, So we focus on celebrating our military, especially our
pre nine to eleven veterans World War two, Korea and Vietnam,
and catastrophically injured combat wounded veterans from any any era.
It's really simple. We try and help as many as
we can with the funding that we have, and doing

(02:46):
roofs allows us to touch a lot of a lot
of lives and a lot of families that really need it.
So that's that's that's really the focus. You know, next
year actually we're gonna do that. We focus on only
four events a year right around Vietnam Veterans Day, Memorial Day,
gold Star Mother's Sunday, which gold Star Mothers are a

(03:07):
great partner of ours, love the gold Star Moms. The
last Sunday of every month is gold Star mom Sunday. Sorry,
the last Sunday of September's gold Star Mom Sunday. We
just finished the donation for Alsheba Khan and Laurel Maryland
recently there and the Veterans Day obviously is a big
focus for us coming up here soon. But we're still
donating roofs throughout the year, even outside of our events,

(03:29):
and you can find out a lot more about that
at raisdroof dot org. We are five and one c three.
Everything is completely tax deductible. We have donated over ninety
five percent of our funding back to our focus group,
our Veterans in Need, and we'll continue to improve upon
that on the year to come.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
I've been very honored to witness or raise the roof
when you know you guys are building for either a
gold Star Mom or a veteran themselves. Between the two
of you, do you recall like a special backstory of
I don't mean to put you on the spot. There's
so many great stories out there of a veteran who
got a roof or a gold Star mom. Does one

(04:11):
really kind of stick out?

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah? I mean, Dad, I can let you kind of
touch on that. I mean, as Bob mentioned that everyone
is really special special in its only own way. Our
gold Star mom events are always really heartfelt. They they
definitely are emotional, they're they're they're powerful and celebratory, but
also very sincere and strong. I can think of Sergeant

(04:37):
George Weltz here, three tour Vietnam veteran right near where
I live outside of the Annapolis area. He was involved
in the bloodiest year of of Vietnam nineteen sixty eight
and tet offensive and Sagon and that was a really
and probably the most involved install we ever did. All

(05:00):
of the wood needed to be replaced, the spring rafters, joists,
removing trees. I mean, it was really really in depth,
so that that one is definitely close to heart any
any of our War two veterans that that we had
the blessing of supporting, especially later in their life. Several
of them have passed on since we've done work with them.

(05:21):
A couple of them passed on in between being notified
that they were going to receive a roof and actually
having the roof installed. It was kind of like a
last thing that was that was really important to them,
and when they knew their family was covered, it was
it was almost like they were able to let go
in their late nineties and even one hundred years old,
So I mean there's those are probably I'm always looking

(05:45):
forward to the next one. Yeah, you know, really, the
the high that you come off of after helping somebody
who's done so much for our countries, it definitely lasts,
and we're trying to do more and more and anybody
can get eyes on it. At every event we do,
somebody comes up and says, man, I don't know how
you guys are Niche and Whid doing this yet. Yeah,
it really is is simple. You know, it's so simple,

(06:08):
but it just hasn't been done and hasn't been done
the way that Operation reads the roof does it. And
we're very thankful for Valeroe O our beat here without
Valerie Roofing and even through COVID in all the years,
they're really tough, tough times where you just don't know
what's going to happen next, you know, President of times,
and we kept our promise to our veterans and we're

(06:32):
bigger and better for it. So that I'll let you
double tab if there's anything there.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
I just remember the World War two vet we did
up and nobody even Essex Snorts of Baltimore.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
We gave it.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
We gave it to him and his wife Don and
Jerry Ruter. Yeah, on their seventy fifth wedding anniversary.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
Wow, that's great, really really cool one.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
They were really so special.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
You know.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Yeah, I'll bet, I'll bet. And you know what, in
case somebody missed it or we didn't imagine yet, what
is it? Explain what a gold Star mom is for
people who don't know.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
So gold Star mom, gold Star family, anybody who lost
a loved one killed in action or during their time
in duty. The most recent was Kareem Cohn of Laurel.
A lot of these gold Star parents have lost GoldStar
moms have lost their child within only months of being

(07:28):
in country during combat. It's really kind of the most
telling thing that I've seen out of all the gold
Star out of all the events that we've done, but
every gold Star mom that I've met, their child, the
majority of them, their child was eighteen, nineteen, twenty years
old the first deployment, you know, first combat tour, hadn't
really seen what it was to be in battle, and

(07:51):
unfortunately they lost their lives. So, yeah, gold Star Moms
at their incredible organization We work closely with the gold
Star Moms of Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. Obviously it's a
national nonprofit. I believe there are I think Teresa told
me at the last event they have roughly eight hundred
and fifty members nationwide. It's not a huge thank goodness,

(08:12):
it's it's not a huge constituency of gold Star Moms.
So that's that's obviously great because we don't lose our
young soldiers, our young military lives. Yeah, but yeah, that's
that's that's what they are. And our next event for
gold Star will be in April. We focus on gold
Star spouses and gold Star families for the for the
month of April and September is gold Star Moms.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
That's fantastic, Wow, incredible. I'll tell you what I mean,
you guys, I don't know, there's a lot of companies
and things that do things for our soldiers and our veterans.
I don't know another company does something that's so big.
I mean, you know, a roof, you know to somebody
that's just so huge, it's so awesome. And you do
other things too that kind of wraps around that, and

(08:55):
you just honor our veterans and Americans who are fighting
for our country. I just think it's just wonderful now
just to let everybody know, you don't, you know, don't
have to be tied to the military obviously to call
Valor Home for any of their services. Where do you
guys see the future of Valor Home? What are you
working on now? What can you tell us?

Speaker 2 (09:15):
So? Valor Home is really kind of and if you
look at the areas that we service, Bob, you know, DMZ,
everybody is military connected, you know. I mean whether or
not you grew up in a in a hardcore military home,
you know, kind of like a brat, you know, being
moved all over the United States, or or your grandfather
your grandmother served, you're you're still military connected. So we

(09:40):
want to work with anybody who wants to work, who
wants to work with a company that's focused like us.
Obviously we do we do roofing, you know, roofing. We
do it phenomenally well. Our Valiant roofing system is built
as strong as our men and women in uniform. It's
a fully involved, certaintyed max def shingles two hundred and
four forty pounds weight per square Versus the competition which

(10:03):
is one hundred and seventy to two hundred tops, all
certainty materials, lifetime warranty, non cap, non pro rated. And
we built that the valiant system for the servicemen and
women and their families that they care so much about.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Yeah, and how long does it take for you guys
put on a new roof? How long does it take usually.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
On average a day as we're getting into the Yeah, right,
it's amazing. I mean, and we've got some absolutely amazing
crew has been with us for you know, for years,
if not decades, and as the days get a little shorter,
and if we're into a larger one, it can take
maybe a day and a half. But for the most part,

(10:42):
we're covering our customers in a day only.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
That's incredible.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
Yeah, So listen, what else can we talk about Valor Home?
What events do you have coming up? What do you
want people to know? We'll get to obviously what your
website if people want to know more, But yeah, what's happening?

Speaker 2 (11:00):
I think so valorhome dot com is the website. What's
happening was? Valor is really our support of Operation Raise
the Roof. We are a four star, four star supporter
of Operation Raise the Roof. We help power the organization
along with our other big four star supporter, which is QXO,

(11:20):
leading Building especially exterior roofing distributor nationwide QXO. They've been
great helping helping Valor one serve our customers and helping
Operation Raise the Roof and giving us cash flow and
must needed support there to support our veterans. Besides that,
I mean, we're looking at a looking at a winter

(11:42):
season and I'm sitting out back here looking at all
the acorns in my backyard. The last time that we yeah,
I know, in the last time they dropped like this
was in twenty twenty and then January twenty twenty one,
if everybody recalls, we had some crazy, some crazy storms
this past January of twenty twenty five. If we had
oh gosh, I think it was below freezing the whole

(12:03):
month of January. So expecting another crazy winter. The phones
are definitely ringing. People are are hitting us up, not
only asking if we can come out and give them
a quote the next day, but how quickly can we
come out and install a roof. So we're doing some
emergency service. Don't wait too long, you know, being proactive
is important. This is most of our customer's largest investment

(12:26):
that they have, and we don't want to be the
bearer of bad news and get up there and tell
a customer, Hey, you waited too long and now all
of this needs to be replaced too. You know, we'd
rather not have to have the wood replacement, et cetera.
So I would just stress to anybody who thinks they
might need a roof, even in the next year or two,
we do have financing to help kind of bridge the gap.
If you're waiting on any taxes next year, yeah, I

(12:49):
think right now, we're doing zero percent no payments until
fall of twenty twenty six, and actually that'll be early winter.
We have three thousand dollars off the stand under your
standard Valiant roofing system with us. Again, it's the best
of the best and non capped, non pro rated. You
can't beat it. I've shopped it versus every manufacturer there is,

(13:10):
and what we do is second and none. It's really
a phenomenal system, built as strong as the men and
women in uniform. And yeah, we're here to serve you.
If you're interested in roof give us give us a call.
E three to three eight three valor Or. Visit valorhome
dot com.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
Make sure tell them don't wait because we are controlled
by the weather. Yeah, can do it, can do it
in the snow.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
You know it's true. Yeah, absolutely, And that'll be here
before you know. It's a jump on it right now. Guys,
thank you so much. Al, thank you for your service.
Thanks for creating this incredible company that honors our military.
It's just amazing. And Adam, thank you for your great
communication and your education on everything that is Valor Home.

(13:51):
And I appreciate you. Guys, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
I appreciate you, buddy.
