Speaker 1 (00:00):
Some mornings, it's tough to remember to take everything with
you out the door. Your lunch, your security badge, whatever
you need to get in at work. Other mornings, everything
just seems to click. You know what the difference is?
Those slow mornings you probably missed. 93.1 WPOC. The Michael J.
Morning Show.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Hope you can join us every morning.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
But if you do happen to miss anything, maybe you
can catch it here on our podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Thanks for checking in. Follow, like, share, and keep listening.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
93.1 WPSC with Michael J.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
And Candace.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
I know you're working on the brief and we have
the good news about the Orioles. What else are you
working on that we need to know about?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
It's the end of an era for a mall in
Baltimore County. Updates in the brief.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
And I'm getting texts and emails about this story, about
the mall, about how important this mall has been in
lives all over Baltimore. That's right.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Right, I know.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Your pop culture protein boost.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
It's The Brief on 93.1 WPOC.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
An employee with Baltimore County's Department of Permits, Approvals, and
Inspections is accused of failing to work more than 239
hours while collecting pay.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
What?

Speaker 3 (01:12):
This is all according to the Office of the Inspector General.
In a new report released yesterday, the investigation found that
in a 16-day stretch in June and July 2025, the
inspector's county vehicle sat idle at locations unrelated to work
or left early for the day, adding up to more
than 55 hours of missed work. And then the employee

(01:33):
was inactive for more than 183 hours from October to
January 2026. The Baltimore County Executive Office said the employee
is no longer working for the department.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
All right.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
In good news, Baltimore Orioles center fielder Colton Couser made
the catch of a year in the bottom of the
ninth inning of the Orioles versus Rockies game last night.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
I think that Kevin Brown and Ben McDonald should get
an award for this call, too. Here's what happens. So,
Kouser goes up for the ball. It was going to
be a home run for sure.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Kouser racing back. Kouser near the wall. Jumps.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Kouser.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
He made the catch. He made the catch.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
It might be the greatest home run robbery game-ending catch
you'll see in your life.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
You've got to be kidding me. Unbelievable. I mean, the
excitement's real, though.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
It's not just, yeah, it really was.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
No, it's great. We're 500.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
The Orioles were clinging to a 2-1 lead with two
outs when Couser went up against the fence and brought
that shore home run back in. It was monumental because
it gave the O's their fourth straight win and lifted
them to 500 for the first time.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Since April. Just a half game out of the wild card.
Go O's.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
It's the end of an era after 70 years serving
Baltimore County as the East Point Mall prepares to close.
Monday marked the final day for shoppers to visit the mall.
It first opened in 1956 as an outdoor shopping center.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
And you had somebody send a text.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, I just got a note from Adrian. And she writes,
Michael J. and Candace, good morning. Want to start saying
I love listening to y'all every morning on my ride
to work.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Well, thank you.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
My husband and I, she says, took our last walk
around East Point Mall yesterday. We purchased or he purchased
my engagement ring at Shaw's in East Point.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
And he proposed to me in the mall. Oh, my goodness.
He was like, I got the ring. Let's go. He's like,
what am I waiting for? Sit here in the food court.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
And anyway, she says September 7th will be their wedding anniversary.
And they've been together 40 years.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
They've been married.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
She says, we've had so many memories in East Point,
it's so sad to see it close.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Well, we feel you.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
I know.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
You saw the Easter Bunny there, you said. Yes, I did.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
All right.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
More than once.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
What is going on this week in music? Not just
country music, but all music. Ella Langley is going to
the record books, and they're going to be talking about
her 20, 30 years from now. Michael J's Music City Minute.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
In 60 seconds, you're going to know like you own
Music Row.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
I'm seriously not blowing this up bigger than it really is.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
No, he's an Ella fella, but this is legit facts.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
Listen to this. So, Billboard magazine. Remember Casey Kasem? Remember
the country top 40? You know, it's all based on
Billboard magazine. This is where they tabulate songs, how successful
they are. Back in the day, they had a buddy system.
They called them like, are you playing that song? Yeah,
got it in heavy. See, it's all changed now. It's

(04:38):
all on computers, and they can monitor what stations are playing.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
So, they know.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Ella Langley's Choose in Texas has achieved a landmark 20th
week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, claiming
the sole longest run ever atop the chart for a
non-holiday song. The song first led in February, this past February.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
You and I weren't even a morning show yet.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
She has had multiple chart records, and now is just
the second song in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. and
their 68-year history for a lead of at least 20 weeks.
Here's an updated look at the longest leading hits, ranked
by the most weeks at number one ever on the
Hot 100. I'm going to go back just to the

(05:26):
top three. Old Town Road from Lil Nas X, Billy
Ray Cyrus, 19 weeks at number one. A bar song,
Tipsy from Shaboosie, spent 19 weeks at number one. As
of yesterday, Ella Langley's Choose in Texas, 20 weeks. There's
only one song left at 22 weeks. And I think

(05:48):
this isn't even really fair because All I Want for
Christmas is You is a Christmas song that has been
number one in multiple years.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
So it's really not apples to apples.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
But regardless of all that, in two weeks, if Choose
in Texas continues at number one for two more weeks,
she will tie Mariah.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
And if she can do it three.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
More weeks, she has the longest stay at number one
in the history of all history.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
That is incredible.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
That is where we find Ella Langley as of today,
20 weeks at number one.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
I think so. I think she can go 25.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
I really do. Number one LFL. The song is still
as popular as ever. No one's telling me they're getting
sick of it.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Hey, who's ready to take a seat and win some concert.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Tickets in Michael J. and Candice's hot seat? I think
it's time you give us a call.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
All right.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Ninth caller gets to play.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
800-321-7000. All right, we're joined by Sheila.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
She called in, ninth caller, and she wanted to beat
the seat for tickets to go see Ashley Cook. Hey, Sheila,
you work for the Public Defender's Office?

Speaker 4 (06:55):
I do.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
And if you could go back, you've been there 20 years,
she told us, off air. If you could go back
and tell your younger self when you first started working
for the Public Defender's Office, what would you tell yourself?
What would be the one thing you've learned over 20
years that you wish you knew in the beginning?

Speaker 4 (07:11):
I think I think, honestly, I just had this conversation
with one of my kit workers is that, you know,
as much as I love my job, learning and being challenged,
it is important to try different career paths when you're young.
Because now, as much as I love what I do,

(07:32):
I kind of hit this spot where I, like, feel
like I've learned pretty much all I can learn. you know,
and I'm not being as challenged. So I just think
it's like fun and exciting to be challenged. And, but
I'm sort of invested now that I don't want to
leave now, you know? Right.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Right. But you feel like you've topped out is what
you're saying.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Yeah. Well, I, yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
Well, maybe, maybe it's time for you to talk to
somebody there and say, Hey, Give me some more responsibility.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Let me see what I can do.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
And some more money along with it.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Good luck.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
We've got concert tickets for Ashley Cook at the 930 Club.
I think it's September 18th, if I remember correctly. And
you win if you can answer three questions in three
seconds each. So don't dilly dally.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Let's go.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Here's question number one for you, Sheila. First job that
you got fired. Have you ever been fired?

Speaker 4 (08:32):
I've never been fired. Wow.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Thank you, Sheila. I said the same thing. He's coming
up with the questions. I said, well, I've never been fired.
Not everybody's been fired. I guess it's just me. Imagine that.
All right. Well, then we'll change it. What was the
first job you ever had? Let's do that. What's the
first job you ever had?

Speaker 4 (08:50):
I actually worked as like a flyer delivery person for
a sub shop when I was like 12 or something.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
So you would stuff people's mailboxes or.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Something like that?

Speaker 4 (09:03):
Yeah, like, you know, the little, like, menus and flyers
that the sub-subs have.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
I would, like, put them, yeah, I would put them
on their porch. And me and one of my friends
that live down the street would do it. And our
parent would, like, drive behind us, you know, to make
sure we were safe. They paid us, like, something like
$ 100 a weekend or something. That's funny.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
All right, question number two for Sheila.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Yeah. East Point Mall has announced their closing. What mall
did you go to when you were a kid?

Speaker 4 (09:31):
Go. I did Golden Ring and East Point.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
So are you sad to see East Point go too?
I guess that's where I saw the Easter Bunny.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
I'm very sad.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
All right. And finally, Sheila, here we go. What country
star would you love to see at the mall? Go.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
Probably Luke Combs. That would be pretty awesome.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Can you imagine you're walking around and all of a
sudden you see, and Luke Combs would just be there
with a baseball hat on.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
You know what I mean? He's like behind the scenes.
some pants or something.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Right.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Hey, Sheila, you are going to see Ashley Cook.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
Congratulations.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Yay.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Thank you very much for listening. Yes. That's how it works.

Speaker 4 (10:11):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
She didn't mention she wanted to see Morgan Wallen at
the mall. Is that something against Morgan?

Speaker 4 (10:16):
No. I do love Morgan, but he's not one of
the ones where, like, I'd be willing to pay hundreds
of dollars.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Kind of a big day behind the scenes because at
11 this morning, we find out who's up for a
CMA award. Candace, you've never been nominated for a CMA
award before, and you are, you're at least submitted. You
and I are submitted. That's all we are right now
is just submitted.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Wouldn't that be cool if something good happened at 11? Yeah,
at 11 o'clock today. I mean, listen, and if it
doesn't happen.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
We'll try again next year.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
And we'll cheer on. We'll pick a favorite out of
the five that get nominated. We'll root them on.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
And then we'll say, hey, we're coming for you next year.

Speaker 4 (10:59):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
But at 11 this morning, this is our first year
doing this, so we don't really know what it's going
to be like.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
And to be fair, we were together as a morning
show for how many months before we submitted?

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Yeah, so everybody, well, they say you're supposed to be
in there for at least a year. We were only
in there for four and a half months. But I'm like,
maybe they won't pay attention to that part.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
Whatever.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
Seems like we've known each other.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
A whole lifetime. Jason Aldean. We were talking about how
he got that big diamond award. That's one of the
songs that earned him 10 million. Uh-huh.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
That along with Dirt Ride Anthem. Yeah, that's amazing.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Yeah, all happening while we were backstage.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
I'm like, Brittany. So what did Jason Aldean say about it?
Did you say that's pretty cool?

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Well, he didn't because it happened after he was with
us in the radio room.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Oh, okay.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
The only reason I knew about it was because Brittany
had posted the video and they were like, we have
a big surprise for him after he does radio.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
And I'm like, what's the surprise? How did Giada, your daughter,
get cake from the celebration then? I don't know. No,
she got cake, right? I want to hear the whole story.

Speaker 4 (11:55):
No.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
Oh, come on. Somehow cake made it to Giada.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
That's amazing.
