Speaker 1 (00:00):
Magnolian and the Hamilton's on Old Tree. We're proud to
have them sponsor a hotline. And we go high at
top City Hall to the second floor to bring in
the honorable Mayor of the City of Opulaika. My good
friend Gary Fuller, Good morning, Mayor, may.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Good morning de Mark, and good morning Jeff, Good morning.
Great you guys, and uh yeah, we're a little we're
a little out of sync with that meeting from last
week being moved to this week. But we had a
successful council meeting. I want to compliment Council President JD.
Smith along with the pro tem Erica Norris and George
(00:36):
Bandy and Tim Asia and Todd Rauk. We had another
successful meeting. We I only had one presentation to make
during my remarks and that was to recognize the uh
the Dixie Well it used to be Dixie Ugh's now
called Diamond Youth Baseball OZON twelve and under all Star
(00:58):
team that recently won the state championship. So they're off
to the World Series and they'll be in South Carolina.
Kurk Branch is the head coach and with Kurt, we
had Brandon Hutto and two more coaches and then twelve
players and we recognized all of them and so proud
of this, this twelve and Underdiamond youth team. And then
(01:22):
we had an eleven and under All Star team that
was not at the council meeting, but the council made
a special appropriation for them. They're going to Arkansas the
World Series. I didn't know that, but they'll be born
to South Carolina. And then of course we got our
own World Series coming here.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Mark, Yes, sir, we got it at the end of
the month. Thirteen Junior DBB Baseball looking forward to it,
our second one in about three years.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Well, great to have everybody in town looking forward to
being with you and everybody that you'll have there for
the opening ceremony is and so looking forward to that.
We we It was a relatively short short meeting last night.
I think I was home by I don't know, six
thirty five something like that, and UH text me about
(02:14):
six minutes to get from the Municipal Court building over
to where I stay on Maukingbird Lane. So got vivid.
I did not stay up and watch the Brave and
I'm so glad that I didn't. Colle not good there
don't know what we're gonna do, Bud, because it then
(02:35):
they're not they're getting worse. And uh, you know, I
think about Snitteker. Uh you know, generally what they do
is they want to fire the manager and then the
general manager. And I'm not sure that. I don't believe
Snitteker is. I don't believe he's throwing a pitch or
run a base or fielded anything. So but I don't
(02:58):
guess you can fire the entire team. You start with
a managers, so that may be coming at any time.
God all, it was really bad. They got hammered last night,
but I didn't stay up and watch it, and I'm
so glad that I didn't. Mark I wanted to mention
three big big things on the agenda from last night
(03:20):
that the largest was to approve a project development agreement
with opalaka Meal Holdings. This is about It represents about
one hundred and twenty five million dollar capital investment forty
two acres. This is north of the railroad tracks on
the site that used to be occupied by West Point
pepperl And it'll be a mixed use development with commercial,
(03:46):
with residential, with some single family, multi family, some town
homes it's going to be very very nice. You're probably
looking at about a ten plus year buildout. So the
council did approve that, and then the council also approved
certain tax abatements and exemptions for some one USA. They're
(04:10):
building a new logistics warehouse out on the South inter
Royal Road near the old BF Food rich Inner Royal plant.
That'll be over thirty two million dollars capital investment and
will create twenty new jobs. So council approved all of
those last night. Also will approved a change to a
(04:33):
professional services agreement with BSI for the Hope Like Industrial
Authority Siege Grant project thirty two thousand dollars. Had several
we debatement assessments for south Forth Street, MLK Boulevard, Dalkwood Avenue,
Clanton Street. Council approved all those, made a special appropriation
(04:57):
to O Grows, the purchase of Lawnmore, did the special
appropriation to the eleven and under All Star Team and
equipment under All Star Team. Then a special appropriation to
the Lacounty Court Referral Program. Now the council had three ordinances.
(05:18):
One was the second reading and the council did approve
an annexation petition petitioned by period mon Hell LLC for
seven point six acres on the Highway to eighty West.
Then they had the first reading on a zoning Ordinance
and map amendment on Birmingham Highway seven point six acres,
(05:45):
same thing that would just approved for annexation. And then
they suspended the rules and authorized the exchange of assets
with Telfus River Electric Cooperative on some equipment and lines
that we're we're doing a swap with. And it's gonna
be good for opees, it's gonna be good for Tallapus
(06:05):
the River, it's gonna be good for our our rate payers,
and the Talapus River is a good deal all the
way around. So mark By and Lauriers that was that
was it?
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Man, Well it sounds like it was good. And I
tell you what, that's good to hear over there in
the Mill Village, mayor that big development that's that's that's
the Wayne Newton move now.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
And I'm telling you it's gonna be it's gonna be big.
And uh, you know, coming back to Warktown. As a
matter of fact, the new Food Bank Community Market is
gonna have their topping out ceremony at twelve noon today.
That's a thing been going on in construction since time immemorial.
(06:48):
When the contractor of the builder gets to the what's
gonna be the highest point of a new facility, they
have a topping out ceremony. So that's uh. They're on
the old mill property is getting back closer to town.
So class to see all of that development. And you know,
we continue to see. We don't have the the building
(07:12):
permits yet for the month of June, but we'll have
those should happen by next week to pass those along
to folks and mark. You know, it's it's campaign time
and we've got all five all of our incumbents are
running for re election. Eddie, our council president Ward four representatives,
(07:35):
is asking for a promotion. He wants to move to
the Mayor's office and I'm in favor of that and
no secret that that's who I'm supporting. But all five
of our all four of the other council members are
running for re election. Georgia Allen in Ward one, Erica
Nourris and Ward two tim Aga and Ward three Tidd
(07:58):
Route in Ward five. All all of those races are competitive.
There are two guys, Chuck Beams and troop Garner running
to take Eddie's place on the city council. That's Ward four.
And so it's going to be you know, it's campaign season.
So you know you're seeing more and more signs out
(08:20):
and you'll be hearing more and more commercials on the
radio about these folks running and asking for your vote. Now, Mark,
every ten years when we have the census, we have
some confusion about where you vote. Now. You know, we
get changed a lot of times.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Yep, you know.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
And I think you where you live, yes, sir, where
we live? You have been in more four, I think right.
And Laura and I lived in Our whole neighborhood was
in Ward four. That's now in War three. So instead
of going to the Hospital Education Center there on Peperal Parkway,
(09:03):
we'll go to the Dents and Drive Recreation Center that's
Ward three. What we what we'd like to encourage folks
to do, Mark, And now they can call They can
call the city clerk, Russell Jones and tell them their
address and Russell can tell them where to vote. Or
they can go on the on the World Wide Web
(09:25):
to the City of Opalaikam and go to the maps
and lank and click on the ward map, enter your address,
and then they will tell you exactly where you're gonna vote.
If you're a little computer illiterate like I am, you know,
just pick up the phone and call. You can call Russell,
(09:45):
you can call our planning department, as you can call
call the mayor's office. We want folks to understand where
they vote, because I can hear it now, Mark, somebody
is gonna go at the place they've been voting the
last fifteen years, that's right, and they're gonna say no,
you're not. You're not supposed to vote here. You've got
(10:07):
to go somewhere else. So, uh, good time to check
that would be now, so that when August twenty six
gets here, you know where you're going to vote. And
does Jeff know where he's going to vote? Jeff?
Speaker 1 (10:21):
You know, Yeah, I vote at the uh the annex
building that used to be uh the steakhouse across from
the hospital.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
What is it?
Speaker 1 (10:28):
The it belongs to the hospital. Mister Jay's what I
call him? What he says, well, what is the Education Center?
Mayor East Alabama?
Speaker 2 (10:36):
That?
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Yeah, I don't know the name.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
That's why it's.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Got doctor Haynes's picture in there. I know that.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Yeah, yeah, and Jeff, have you gone online and check
to make sure that's where you go?
Speaker 1 (10:47):
You know I did early, I did. I did back
when we talked about this. You know some of the
yeah you mentioned before. Yeah, I went on to check.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Good well, good well. I would encourage I would encourage
all off folks. And we're trying to get the word
out about this mark because invariably somebody on August twenty six,
if we're mad as all get out because they go
after the sports pleaque and then they're told, no, you
(11:15):
don't vote here, you vote wherever, and and we don't
want we don't want that. So please please check before
you before you do that. And and I would appreciate that,
and I'm sure all these canidates would appreciate it. We're
trying to get your trying to get your vote.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
I was just thinking, maybe we have all five city
council wards up for election. I don't even think about that.
Do you just went through that?
Speaker 2 (11:40):
We do so now and the mayor and the mayor.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Of course three running from mayor. I didn't realize we
had three running for mayor either, So that's interesting.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
It is, especially one that doesn't live in Oplocka running
from mayor.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Well, now, how can he if he doesn't live in
o black I is he able to run?
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Well, he put his name on the ballot and he's
signed an AFFI David saying that he did, so it'll
take somebody have to take him to court. Uh we can't.
The city can't remove him from the ballot.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
And uh so I didn't know that man. That's interesting.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Well, yeah, I think he wants the platform and wants
to be able to criticize me.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
And that's what I figured.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
That's all right, we put on our big boy pants
every day. He's had a few lawsuits against the city,
and of course I had one in the Abu But.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Okay, the rest of the story as well.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Yeah, yeah, so but anyway, hey, yeah, the three in
that race too, really, But and then I don't know
how many is in. I think there's three in the
Ward one race. There's uh three or four in the
War two. I think there's two and more three and
two and more five, two in more four, So competitive
(13:02):
races all the way around. And let me tell you
what I was. Somebody asked me the other day if
I was gonna miss campaign, and I said, you know,
he is. It's hot right now if you wait towards
the end of July in August when you're out there
walking those streets, and man, it is some kind of
but it was always a good way to lose ten
(13:23):
or fifteen pounds, you.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Right about that. And it's this heat right here, may
it's got to be. It's a lot. There's a lot
going on, no doubt. So how's your family doing, Mayor?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
And everybody's good. Junior had a birthday on July the third. Okay,
when he was a little boy coming along, we'd take
him after the high school for the firework We tell Gary,
this is for your birthday.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
How about that?
Speaker 2 (13:48):
He finally figured out that wasn't wasn't true. But you
know they had a heck of a fireworks show out there.
Oh and I didn't go, but I heard. I've heard
a lot of folks talk about it. And Sam Bailey
and Parks and Recreation puts that on and does a
heck of a job. And Mark, we are getting great,
(14:10):
great reviews from folks going to Florida Park. John John
Bodiford's grandson as you're visiting with him, and they came
over to the fool. Yesterday afternoon. I asked John if
you had taken his grandson over to Florida Park. He said, yeah,
we've been twice. But that floor a party and you've cared.
You've cared your grandson.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Oh yes, mayor. We we give you that high check
mark too. They love it absolutely, And it's amazing to
me that that little splash pad. Well, no, and I
don't mean anything by it, but that is a big hit.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Oh man. Yeah, Well, you know chilling love to play
in the water. They do.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
They did.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
And Mark, let me tell you what. We spent nine
million dollars of your money and money at our money
at Flora Park. So when you enjoy that, thank yourself
being a taxpayer in Opulaika. And we think that was
I had somebody tell me said, that's the best Houston
nine million dollars that they had heard of in a
(15:11):
long time.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
It's phenomenal there.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
It'd be nice if we could operate government without any taxes,
but it's kind of hard to do my experience, in fact,
I think it's impossible. But Florida Park and then we're
building that new lodge down at Spring Villa that's going
by Joey Modley and I wrote down there last week
check on the progress of that, and that is going
(15:36):
to be extremely nice. It's gonna be a great wedding venue,
a family reunion venue. It's really really gonna be handsome
and replaces the double wide trade that we had there
for thirty years. So a lot of good things continue
to happen in our community.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Borrow, well, let me tell you this too. Many back
I took John Mark over to the gains to the
fireworks and no flock in Auburn. I tell you what
two great nights I love. The one in opl like
of Orthopedic Clinic in the wreck in the city all
did a great job was super night awesome, got there
just in time.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Oh yeah, well that's uh. And we appreciate the High
School of Kelly Fisher and True and Mark, you've met
the new superintendent, Kevin Davis, and he's he's getting acclimated
and learning his way around town. I think he got
bought a house and.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
That's what I hear.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Got his got his family living here and trying to
get trying to get settled in. And we're glad to
we had to have doctor Davis. And you know I
heard you talking about when when's your media.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Days Martin end of the month, twenty ninth and thirtieth Mayor,
we got to get you to come by there.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Now.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Check out everybody over there at the twenty ninth that
we're gonna be at First Baptist Church this year. They
saw the Bottling Plant Events center in the middle of
the cell, so we just kind of moved it to
get that clear. So we're gonna be at the three
sixteen building over there at First.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
And that's perfect, sir. And I'm I'm sure some of
those coaches be asking my favorite Baptist preachers and take
a little prayer team in.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
The season, they all undefeated, Mayor, they'll all be asking
for prayer.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Well you do it. You do a tremendous job with
that Mark who started that several years ago. And I
tell you that's been a big, big hit. And uh
and gosh, I don't know how many teams you go
af participating close.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
To thirty mayor close to thirty We got eight man
independent school, private school. We got them all. So we
clad glad to show them all some all the way
to widely Alabama.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Oh man, that's I think that's great, that's great. Thank
you well, Mark, listen, I appreciate you, and Jeff. I
hope you, sir, have a terrific day. Now. We'll we'll
talk again next Wednesday morning, Okay, after the council meeting
next Tuesday night.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
That's what I thought, all right, Mayor, thank you very much.
You're back doing better. You're back doing.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
Better, sure, I think I think so.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Okay, so hang in there, all right, all right, buddy, yes,
sir
