Speaker 1 (00:01):
You know, everybody's here, So what the heck, let's party. Yeah,
it's time. The Rangers are all in camp, and so
it's time to get this party started officially for twenty
twenty five. We've got it all next on the DLLs
Rangers Podcast. Ah, the Valley of the Sun. That is
(00:24):
where the Rangers find themselves as they get set to
begin twenty twenty five of fresh faced Evan Carter among
the guys who was out there today, as were all
of the guys who use their bats more so than
their arms to get their season started. You have pitchers
(00:44):
and catchers finish their progress yesterday and so now the
full team reports, and Jeff Wilson is standing by in
Arizona and it's the DLLs Rangers Podcast. We've got the
profit over there, me, John Radigan, Jeff there, and and
you know, I don't want to like freak people out
at the two o'clock hour, Jeff. But some breaking news
(01:07):
maybe like just kind of snapping, not really breaking news,
but news all the same.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, it is news. Luke Jackson, former Rangers draft pick
into way back in twenty ten out of high school
in Florida. He has signed a one year contract he's
a reliever now, and you know, he goes on the
forty man roster. This isn't a minor league deal. This
is a major league deal, so he's on the team.
(01:36):
So you're looking at a guy who has some closing experience.
Limited in twenty nineteen, I believe it was maybe eighteen
with the Braids, he had eighteen saves. It was a
spectacular year if you look at the strikeouts and walk totals,
and then not a great year last year. But he's
had some good seasons and right hander throws hard, has
(01:58):
pitched in really for a while. So it's another guy
to put in the group. And you know, I'm sure
it's affordable. We know we haven't been given the terms yet,
but considering where we are in camp and how many
relievers are still out there, I'm guessing that that Luke,
who again is making his return to the organization, didn't
(02:22):
hold him over the hold over the fire trying to
get a contract.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Yeah, no doubt. I mean, he opportunity is his contract
is his blessing right now, no doubt about that. But again,
a guy who was a forty fifth overall pick, I
get it. It was fourteen fifteen years ago. But you know,
he's had a lot, he's had a long major league
career at this point.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yes, and he was I believe he was a Rangers
minor leacher for the year. I'd have to double check that,
but memory seems to serve that's the case. He I
remember after he was drafted, the Rangers actually went and
played in Miami during that hot stretch in the summer
(03:10):
of twenty ten when Josh Hamilton couldn't miss a ball
and Michael Young in that series became the Rangers all
time hits leader. Anyway, we wanted to talk to Luke Jackson,
and you know, he he he made it seem like, eh,
I may sign, I may not all this stuff. He didn't.
He didn't pitch a lot as a youngster. He was
(03:31):
a really good soccer player, and so he played soccer
as much as he played baseball. So it's a low
mileage arm, but he did. He he, you know, kind
of has as morphed as a lot of guys happen
to when they become major leaguers and reached the major
leagues and became our reliever. And he's become a pretty
(03:53):
good one with again, you know, like you said, he's
been up up here a while.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Yeah, Brett see asks who did the Ranger get rid
of to make room for him? And there you go.
It's Zi Bores who went on the sixty day disabled list.
We talked about that as being one spot that was openable.
Jeff and the Rangers opted to do that in order
to get Luke Jackson that that major league contract.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, they could have They could have gone one or
two ways. They could have gone with Josh or Jose Corneiell,
who is coming back from Tommy John surgery. Spores. Okay, whatever,
whatever floats your boat, that's fine. He's only throwing plio
balls right now, so he's not even throwing a baseball,
(04:38):
so he's going to be a while. But yeah, he's
he's he he Luke being he. Luke is here and
looking forward to getting reacquainted with him. I think he's
gonna meet with the Riders right right here in the
next couple of minutes. But I'm I'm gonna stay with
us because well, I know Luke, I don't need to
(05:01):
get to know, and I do have a phone number
so I can call him if I need him that badly.
In the next twenty four hours.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yeah, fantastic. So along those lines, what what was the
tenor the mood the tone out there today in the
first day that the position players were also in place.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah, you know it was. It's always a fun day.
The crowd's a little bit bigger in terms of you know,
fans and autograph seekers also, but the players are in
high spirits. You know, everybody was happy to see a
DoLS Garcia his his what what is a new swing?
(05:42):
Really not not tremendously different, but a couple of things
that he did differently. Evan Carter, who's out there, We
talked to him this morning, and you know, it was
a pretty good group of guys on field six. I
believe it's field six, as you know. The first group
was Simeon and the Dulls and Josh Smith a couple others,
(06:06):
and the next group was young Langford Berger guy and
Tavaris guys you real wanted to see. And then and
then Evan Carter came into the third group. Then they
broke up into live bad any practice and that's where
Evan Carter, I think we have a video took Garson Garabido,
Deep Kennedy Landry on the scene. I was. I was
(06:26):
at the other field, but Kennedy, Kennedy caught that one.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yeah, we can go to that shot profit with Evan
Carter taking Garrison Garabido deep amazing. Uh. Yeah, you never
know if the pictures are ahead of the hitters or
the hitters or but this one on this pitch, this
(06:53):
hitter was ahead of the picture. JAF. He takes it
out to right field. There we go. Look at that.
He had a little hop at the end of it.
So but the but the beauty is and I know
we're gonna have a lot more time to talk about
Evan later in the show, after your conversation with him
this morning. But nice to see him healthy. You mentioned
(07:13):
adoles Garcia and a Dooleys Uh, you know, was was
identified on MLB dot com as the player with you know,
sort of the most to prove if you will at
spring training, the one who's really got to show up
at spring training. I suppose there are other candidates. That
(07:35):
was the one that MLB chose. But everything I've seen,
you know, just on the on the the social media
platforms here Jeff shows an awfully happy, smiley excited adoles Garcia.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yeah, and and he you know, last year's behind him.
Every year is different, so it's a fresh start. He's healthy.
I think more and more as we talk about last
spring with Bruce Bochi and Chris Young and some of
the players, it becomes more and more evident that he
was not ready last year at the start of spring training.
(08:12):
You know, he had had the injury in Game three
of the World Series, and it was a pretty it
was a pretty good one. It was like a Grade
two last stain strain. Those are usually six to eight weeks.
We'll shoot six eight weeks. That takes it to the
end of January, you know. And so the Rangers really
laid off of them last spring and told him, you know,
(08:33):
don't kill yourself out in the field. Just try to
get as ready as you can. And he had a
great April, fantastic April, and then just went in the toilet.
So he's made some changes that are noticeable if you
watch video that I don't know that we have it,
but it was tweeted out from the d LS Rangers account.
His stride is the most notable thing. It's not that
(08:56):
big leg kick anymore. It's a short, quick, shortened quick
pick that up, pick it down and that just makes
it everything quicker. So the swing itself is a little shorter,
but everything has to be had to be quicker. That
was the number one goal for Adulas And he worked
some with Donny Ecker in the offseason, but he also
worked with Bobby Wits hitting coach, and so there there's
(09:19):
a lot of work that was done. It is different.
But there was one ball that he hit Tony Beasley
was throwing VP and I guess it was an inside fastball.
I guess, you know, all you throw is fastballs. But
Marcus Simeon said, you're not going to be able to
get in on him this year. So you know, they
they've they've seen it. You know, they see the work
that he's put in there. You know, I think they're
(09:40):
excited about it. And a happy Adulas is a is
a good Adulns And when he's happy, that means that
means he's really doing good at the play.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Yeah, no doubt about it. And and I wonder and
you'll have a chance and we all will to have
more conversations with him about it. But how if it
still feels foreign? Right, We've talked about when you change
your golf swing just a little bit it's such a
foreign feeling. I wonder if that change feels natural or
still somewhat foreign to Adul's.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Well, I mean it was repeatable, you know, he he
was the he wasn't going back and forth between the
old lake kick and this new one. It was it
was repeatable. I probably I probably saw him take four
rounds of BP, so yeah, I mean, he seems comfortable
with it. And and again the guys watching it were
(10:38):
happy with it. And that includes Donniecker, who I spoke
to briefly after the round just to make sure that
my eyes were indeed correct and and seeing what I
was seeing. So there's a lot of good stuff there.
For Evan Carter, we saw the home run, but good
stuff there. Why Langford is just to just look like
(10:59):
a miss Gene out there, just he's such such great
bat speed and he just you know, he he looks
so strong because he is strong. But it was just
it was just impressive. And all those videos will be
coming out at some point on the on the DLS
Rangers Twitter account. I'll try to retweet as many of
them as I can. And then they went to live
(11:20):
batting practice, and live batting practice is always kind of fun.
It does, it gives, it gives the pictures instant feedback,
all right, So Garrison Garabido got some instant feedback, I
can assure I can assure you that. But I was
over on the other there are four fields going at once.
(11:42):
I was Caddy corner from the the Carter field, watching
Nathan Evaldi and Jacob web pitch and then Corey Seeger
and Prospects Sabash of Walcott. We're hitting in the same group.
So uh, that one, that one grabbed my attention a
little bit more than the others. Marcus Simeon and a
(12:02):
Doulas were over at a separate field. They faced Tyler Mallley.
That was where Langford also was. So just always there's
somewhere to be. You know, you want to be at
four places at once, but you can't. The guy who
gets the most steps in on this day is Mike
Maddicks as he's tried to bounce around to make sure
everybody's in the right place, and all the pitchers who
(12:25):
were warming up know where they're going, and back and
forth looking down in his notebook, back and forth. So
but it's just a good day. And then this is
this is it? I mean games start on Friday, and
the Nathan Evaldi is going to start the opener. I
believe that hasn't changed. So you know, he may get
in a bullpen here Wednesday and then he'd start Friday,
(12:49):
probably just going in in or two. But this is
the process is started and with with with the full
squad here. It's it's now spring training. It's it's in
full effect.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Yeah, that's great. It's really as we said in the
description of the program, if you read that, it's basically
the first time that the twenty twenty five team is together.
They have gotten them together and they are ready to roll.
Let's see how quickly, how fast, how aggressively, how wonderfully
(13:21):
this team can roll this year. It's a long season
and it begins today. More coming up on the DLLs
Rangers podcast as we get to so many topics, including
Jacob de Gram's great outing if you will over the weekend,
and we've got more on Evan Carter as well. Next
on the DLLs Rangers podcast. First though, it's shady rays
(13:44):
and despite the chili temperatures around here, you need shady
rays at least today you do. Hopefully we won't get
too cold, but even if we do. If the sun's out,
it feels better. I know I felt warm in the
car today with the sun beaten on me, and hopefully
I will on Wednesday when there is my phone, Jeff
is telling me there's an extreme cold warning. So great
(14:07):
and that wonderful. I don't guess you have an extreme
cold warning in Arizona. I do know this though, if
you are in Arizona, if you're going to Arizona, get
your Shady Rays before you go. They'll come quickly and
they will take care of you in any way every
way that you need them to. Because they're great sunglasses, polarized,
and you can made so well. You can get a
(14:30):
replacement pair if anything goes wrong with them. You can
get thirty five percent off those polarized sunglasses with the
code DLLs. That's all you got to do at Shadyrays
dot com.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Seventy two right now headed toward a high temperature of
seventy five today, you're going to be in the mid
seventies all week. It looks like maybe some upper seventies.
So when I return Friday, I've already looked at the forecast.
I am to make sure I have on a sweatshirt
and the heavy coat that I brought. So anyway, none
of them, unfortunately, are from Foco dot com, so they're
(15:08):
they're not licensed Rangers merchandise. I tell you what, John,
I don't remember if it was Saturday or Friday. I
swear I saw a guy in Rangers overalls. Man. I
wonder if he went to Foco dot com and cot those,
because you can get him there at Foco dot com
in addition to a bunch of other items. If you
look at the set behind John, the Foco helped design
(15:30):
our set as well as the one and what we
call the lounge. So go to Foco dot com, use
the code d LLS, and you'll get ten percent off
your first order Foco dot com.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
You know, around the first couple of days of spring training,
I wonder, you know, if you're wearing the Rangers overalls
around there it's nice and sunny, You've come from a
slightly chillier climate, maybe a haul off, and wearing with
no shirt.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Jeff, he had a shirt on.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Fortunately, Okay, good good. I'd I really don't. I really
don't want anyone to do that. That would not make
a good choice. But you know it might happen, and
if it does, that's okay too. Evan Carter. You had
a chance to chat with him today, he is literally
as you know, Jeff, you know, we get as many
questions about Evan Carter as we do of almost anyone
(16:22):
else as he tries to come back from you know,
what could be what certainly was a serious enough injury,
but we just hope that it's not one that lingers
in the career of such a young guy with so
much upside. So how's he feeling.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Well, he feels good. That's that's the that's the key
takeaway here. He feels good. He was asked, you know,
all right, what what specifically was the injury. This is
where you get a little, i don't know, uneasy. He said, well,
that's that's personal. I'm keeping it personal. I'm not gonna
give you guys the diagnosis of what it was. It's
(17:03):
between you know, me and the doctor and the rangers
and all this stuff, and all right, so it's like, gosh,
this sounds like it's bad. But then you know, you
talk to him a little bit more, and he said
that once they isolated the issue. Uh, Doctor Drew Dawst,
the former Arrangers back specialist, Cowboys back specialists, professional bull riders.
(17:26):
I think he still does with the stars in the NFL.
He did my back eleven years ago today. In fact,
while yeah, he he identified a problem. Uh, they had
the ablation done, which is basically chuterizing a nerve. There's
no pain, he said. He hasn't had any flare ups
during the off season. He's found a routine that he
(17:49):
doesn't you know, before workout, he doesn't after workout, and
it hasn't failed him yet. And you know, you saw
that swing there, he's back to swinging the bat. That
that's his that's his swing, you know where he kind
of opens up and looks like he's running out of
the box. That's that's Evan Carter swing. And he couldn't
do it last year because, you know, basically beginning, he
(18:10):
said in about mid April, his back wouldn't allow him
to do a lot of things. He tried to grip
through it, as all young guys do. Anyway, we kept
talking about and talking about it. It sounds like something
he can grow out of. That that that if everything
keeps going the way it has, and what history doctor
Dawson has with it, it eventually goes away. So that's good.
(18:33):
You know, It's just it feels like you're kind of
walking on eggshells with this guy. But you know, Bruce
Bochy said they're going to monitor him, but as as
far as he's concerned, Evan Carter is ready to go
out and play. You know, if if Evan says he
can go, then the Raiders are going to let him go.
Another interesting part of the discussion was, you know, he's
(18:55):
competing basically with Leoti Tavers for the job in center
field and those who were like big workout buddies this offseason.
You know, they both stayed in the Metroplex for much
of it and worked out a globalife. Feel they played
catch every day. I guess they came out here a
little early and we're throwing each other soft toss and
stuff like that. I don't know, they must have spent
(19:16):
five to ten minutes together just watching guys hitting and
talking after every round and all this stuff. And you know,
you talk to both of them and they think the
other guy is just the best guy in the world,
and they're not far off. Leotie is tremendous and Evan
of course is a man of deep faith. But super
polite and you know, doesn't cuss much and says shucks
(19:39):
all the time and stuff like that. It's unusual, but
it's those two. We talked to Evan about hitting left handers,
which is there's not a huge sample size, but it
hasn't been great, but he's confident he can do it.
So you know, it may come down to the Rangers
(20:00):
just going with one of them, probably Evan, I would think,
and let him figure it out, and if it becomes
too big of an issue, then maybe Ilodi would get
a crack against some left handers. But I think another
possibility would be why at Langford sliding over to center field.
The Raiders don't want to do that and they want
to keep him in one spot where he doesn't have
(20:22):
to worry about his defense much and let him just
go up to the plate and kill the ball. But
right now, you know, somebody has to somebody has to
figure it out in center field. And then you know,
Leodi still young guy. Leodi's still young. I think he's
only twenty six. You know, he got rushed in the
major leagues and then bam, the lockout happened and at
(20:43):
a real critical time for him. If he'd had an
off season where he would have been able to work
with the Rangers or at least get a lot of
feedback from him, because it was Donnie Eker was a
new coach and Tim Hyers were new it would have
been huge. They didn't get their hands on him until until,
you know, three weeks before the season. With that shortened
spring training and uh, they send them to the miners
(21:04):
to keep working on it and all that stuff. So
it's it's it's frustrating because you look at Liotin and
you're like, my god, this guy looks like a scud
and he is. He's an amazing athlete. It just hasn't
clicked yet and he may be running out of time.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
Well, I'll say this, shucks. We got to be careful
with our profanity laden questions around Devin Carter. Only we
gotta tamp it down a little bit for Evan Carter. Uh. Yeah,
So it's obviously it's the I suppose one of the
bigger battles, one of the few battles really of spring
(21:43):
training is that is that quote unquote battle in center
field and and uh, I always find that unique, interesting
and really in many ways heartwarming when the two guys
who are battling are are such good friends. That's a
it's a unique dynamic.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Well, it makes it makes not getting the job a
lot easier, you know. And if you're pulling for the
other guy and want the best for him and it
comes at your expense, well what are you going to do?
You know, and then you're gonna stay ready and you
know if something happens, you know, shoot, you know, guys
get hurt. You know, Evan Carter is a perfect example
(22:20):
of that. And and you know they can play all
three outfield spots, so there's going to be a batch
for him. And you know, you could see maybe a
late game substitution if they're not comfortable with why at Langford,
uh completely in left field. You know, Evan could switch
to to left and Leota could come into center or
(22:43):
vice versa. There are possibilities and ways that they're both
gonna going to play for this team. But yeah, I mean,
not two guys can't play center field, you know, you know,
only one of them. This isn't slow pitch softball. So
we'll see what happens as everything takes its course. But
I think if if Evan is healthy, Evan's gonna be
(23:06):
the gay.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Yeah. Okay, So let's switch topics just a little bit
here and talk. We've already obviously mentioned at the top
of the show if you missed it, the Rangers have
signed Luke Jackson to a major league contract, and they've
put Josh Bores on the sixty day disabled list to
make room for Luke on the forty man roster. Luke
(23:28):
a part of the Rangers back in fifteen and sixteen.
And so then the other person, former Ranger Jeff that
they snatched up over the weekend is Joe Barlow. Now
he's on a minor league deal. But it's almost as
if when we look at the progression of the guys
they've added to that bullpen, Jesse Chavez, all these guys
(23:51):
like they're throwing numbers at that thing. For sure.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Well, right right, no doubt about it. You know, the
more of the merrier Joe. Joe didn't pitch in the
major leagues last year. He was injured at one point
then ultimately was released. But I tell you what, everybody
loves Joe Barlow. There are a lot of happy people
former teammates talking to Joe Barlow yesterday. Uh, you know,
(24:15):
he lives in this area now. Uh he married to
the daughter of former Diamondbacks great Luis Gonzalez, and so
he's you know, has a has a pretty good guy
to lean on when times are tough, and times have
been tough for him, you know, injuries and I had
just you know, kind of a lack of performance. I
don't know that he makes the major league team, but
(24:36):
I think he's gonna be damn happy to go to
Triple A, you know, and maybe he pitches and gets
another opportunity somewhere. But yeah, it's it's you know, if
you sign enough guys, you're gonna your bounding at one
of them, right And uh J T. Sharguag who signed
on the first day, guy with a ton of big
league experience with the Mariners, good numbers. If you go
(24:59):
look at Jesse Chavez of course, who you know, he's
forty one now, but you look at his year last year,
you know, it doesn't matter how what he is is
a great, great year and he threw live to day
and looked good. So there's gonna be some competition down there.
And I know that a lot of people, including myself,
(25:20):
think that, you know, they need a couple of multi
inning guys to help with the shortcom the short fall
of the innings. But maybe maybe there's just one and
maybe on those days they have to piece something together
with guys who can throw multiple innings and you know,
maybe four outs from one guy and five outs from another.
(25:41):
And I would imagine Jackson could do that. Mark Church
could be a guy that does that, Sean Armstrong, Hobe Milmer,
even even Jacob Webb. They've pitched, they've pitched multiple innings before.
So I don't know how it's gonna shake out. Honestly,
you have these ideas, but I think if they're looking
for options to close out games, uh, you know, which
(26:05):
which Jackson? Who would be the sixth edition in the
bullpen this offseason? You know, again a lot of possibilities
to get to go with there, and and maybe who knows,
maybe he ends up getting ten saves and another guy
gets eight, another guy gets seven, and you know, all
of a sudden and the Raiders have a thirty save reliever,
(26:25):
just three of them doing it. So we'll see how
that one. That one's that one's another storyline. I mean,
centerfield's really the only position. Yeah, it's not, you know
it even sounds like the bench is going to be
settled with whoever doesn't win centerfield, the backup petcher Josh
Smith and Ezekiel Nran. But again, guys get hurt and
(26:46):
and you never know when you're gonna need somebody, and
so we'll see how it plays out. That's that's about
all we can do. That's what we're gonna say a
lot until you know the first wave of roster cuts
and then the second, and then you know, the day
they leave here, they'll have an idea of what the
roster's going to look like.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
Yeah, we look forward to that, although this day is
always one we look forward to as well. Saturday was
a pretty special day around Surprise Arizona two as the
other major league players were wowed by Jacob de Ground.
We talk about that next, and an update on the
health of a couple of guys as we continue with
the dl ASS Rangers podcast.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
You know, it's pretty amazing to your point to see
these guys who watch each other and do this for
a living be impressed by each other. And I'm guessing
that musicians and comedians and actors and actresses are that way.
I bring that up because game time is the app
where you can get tickets to everything, be it sporting
(27:52):
events or concerts. John, you went to a play, comedy shows,
and so much happens in our area, and this is
the place to go get your ticket if you if
you miss out. The best thing I keep saying it
is that the price you see is the price you get.
There are no hidden fees. If it says eighty one dollars,
(28:13):
by god, you're paying eighty one dollars, unless, of course,
it's your first purchase. And if it is your first purchase,
you get to use the code DLLs for twenty dollars off.
So download the app DLLs twenty percent off.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Fantastic, And don't forget that you will be needing that
rugged road cooler soon enough. I saw an Urcott warning
come across my phone. I hope I won't need mine
this week, right because we've got to empty the refrigerator
because there's no power. But and hopefully you won't, none
of us will. But the reality is at some point,
(28:49):
especially in the hotter months, we are going to need it.
We're gonna take our rugged road cooler out to the pool.
We're gonna take it to the lake. We're gonna take
it to the baseball field, or the soccer field or
the softball field. Right, so many ways to use this
Rugged Road cooler. It's durable, it's built so well, it's
great design, it's lightweight, and it even floats. As we've said,
(29:10):
it floats upright, which means you could also take it
down to San Marcos or wherever you like to enter
the river for a float, right and just float along
with a cooler full of your favorite frosty cold beverages.
That's what I think I might try to do it
this summer with my Rugged Road. You should too Rugged
road dot com and get ten percent off with the
(29:31):
code DLLLS. All right, before we get to Jacob de
Gram Jeff Let's answer, someone was asking about the flu
symptoms downright, flu Jock Peterson has contracted. Who did you
say you had to avoid the other day coming out
of the clubhouse that had it?
Speaker 2 (29:49):
Well, you know, I'm wondering myself about the flu because
I Jock Peterson came down with it and I was
talking to him yesterday about first base. His nose was
running and I had shaken his hand. I shook his
hand because I didn't I missed his presser when he
was in town and he was, you know, his noses running,
(30:09):
and I was like, all right. But Chris Martin was
the other one, oh yeah, who had had the flu.
And then Raoul Cardenius, the massage therapists, also had the flu.
And and I've seen Raoul a couple of times at
the local watering hole, so he's feeling better. So yeah,
you know they're they're suggesting fist bumps instead of handshakes.
(30:36):
I think they're they're trying to be as aware as
they can to keep this thing from spreading. Bruce Boat
apparently had the flu about a month ago. He said,
so it is going around, and I'm I'm knocking on
wood that I can avoid it because I don't want
to go home and be sick.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Those clubhouses in particular, but planes later, and all the
different ways that these guys, you know, weight rooms, all
of it, showers, all the different ways these guys spend
so much time together. It's like a cesspool of germs,
and that's how it gets spread all the way around.
I will say to Raoul, now, you know, back in
my day, if he didn't go to school, you didn't
(31:18):
get to go out and play. So I hope he's
not going to the watering hole in the days he
didn't go to work.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
No, he was, he was not. He was sick, so
he stayed down.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
Yeah, all right, good good man. I love Raoul. I
knew he wouldn't do that. I knew he wouldn't do that.
All right. So Jacob de Gram, Man, my timeline was
just blowing up a lot of it with the stuff
that you were writing, and you were observing as you
watched Jacob de gram throw that first bullpen on Saturday.
(31:50):
But then I love to see, you know, some of
the comments, some of the reactions you got from others
who watched it, all of whom are big league players,
some of them are fantastic big league players, and they
stop down and not only did they watch it, Jeff,
but they were pretty much amazed by what they saw.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Yeah, and you know, of all these the guy who
you know in mits and has kind of made it
a running joke now that you know how much I
like to watch bullpens. He's been out there for all
of de grond well de Grom's won, but he hangs
around for everybody. But yeah, I mean he said, there's
nothing like a Jacob de Grom, A healthy Jacob deGrom.
(32:35):
You know, the bullpen sessions, even playing catch. Tyler Maley said,
when you play catch with Jacob deGrom, you just have
to hold your glove. You don't have to move it
because the ball is going to be there. But you know,
it's the thing is it's effortless. It looks effortless at least.
I mean, I think there's a ton of effort obviously
if you look at the injury history, but you wouldn't
(32:56):
look at his delivery and be like, oh god, you
know that's a lot of that's all lie. You know,
it's not. It's and so you know, the glove pops differently.
It's just a it's just a different experience. And the
big thing was that we were able to catch up
with him, and by by we, I mean me, I
think all of us did separately. But he was fired up.
(33:19):
He was you know, he was excited. He goes, He goes,
did you think it was good? I was like, I
don't know, Jacob, it wasn't good. He goes, I thought
it was really good. I was like, well, what made
it good? Said? Location? Stuff was good? Uh, you know,
he he's worked on his his arm slot. I guess,
I guess as he was explaining it to me. So
(33:42):
I'll try to show you what he showed me. He said,
his elbow was coming up and get get in here.
There it is. I'll just I'll use my left hand.
His elbow was rising as he was throwing, so he's
trying to get it so where it's the same and
he's pushing through. He said, he's done that, and I
don't I don't know what that means, you know, velocity
wise or whatever, but I would imagine that there's more consistency.
(34:04):
And he is all about his mechanics, and that's apparently
the one cue he wants is how is my arm slung?
Because if it's good, then everything else is generally in
good shape. So again, I've said it over and over again.
I can't wait to see it knock on wood again.
Stay healthy, Jacob de Grom, because baseball needs you. Baseball
(34:27):
is better when you're healthy. Baseball is better when you
know Mike Trout's healthy, when Corey seekers healthy, when Josh
Young is healthy. You want these guys healthy at their best.
And so, yeah, but a lot of eyes are on
Jacob de Gram Saturday.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Yeah, you know. The one thing I saw comment from
Evaldi I think is probably in stuff you wrote. But
in any event, he said, what Jacob does so well
is and this seems strange because to us it looks
like they all do this well. But he slows it down.
He has like this calm, this calmness always no matter
(35:02):
what has just happened, he is calm, he is ready,
he's on the same pace, he's on the same sort
of mindset. I mean, it's one of those things that's,
you know, a picture another picture, like Nathan in this case,
can really relate to even though they look like they're
remaining one hundred percent calm, they know what's going on
(35:24):
up here. And yeah, from Nathan's observations anyway, he feels
like Jacob just doesn't let all that other stuff trouble him.
He just repeats, right, that repeatable motion. He just repeats
the same thing over and over again.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
And it has to help that if you're the best
picture in the world, if you get in trouble, chances
are you're going to get out of it, you know.
So that's got to be comforting knowing that, you know,
you don't want to rely on it or take it
for granted, but the guys is great. And again, the
Ranger stands have seen nine starts and then you know,
last year's were just basically three three spring three spring
(36:05):
training starts. You know, he didn't even go I think
maybe he went four innings in one. So it hasn't
been Jacob unleashed. I don't know when that will happen,
you know, if the Rangers are trying to save bullets
early in the year, you know, do they just cap
him at six? Do they cap him at five? I
don't know, But it's gonna be good whatever, whatever, how,
(36:28):
whatever length it is, it's gonna be really good. And
and it's it's you know, you're gonna see a guy
he's getting made. He's getting paid forty million this year,
all right, and there's a reason why, and and we're
gonna see it, you know, assuming that the elbows the
elbows fine, you know, I think the elbow is probably
the least of his words. But he says he feels good,
(36:50):
looks good, and is happy with his progress. So I'm gonna,
I'm gonna, I'm gonna listen to the man and go
with what he says.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
Yeah, and Bruce Boche has a knowledge the fact that, yeah,
we may have to go get him sooner than we
want to, or then he wants us to just based
on the fact that that same thing we're talking about,
Jeff is sort of, you know, managing his workload to
a certain extent.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
Yeah, yeah, you know, they're they're not going to let him.
They're not going to go crazy. They're not going to
let him throw two hundred. It needs this year. Yeah,
he's done in the past, but it's been a while,
so you know, what, what's the right number, you know,
And and it'll it'll be a lot of there's a
lot of communication needed. They need to They need to
(37:39):
know from Jacob and hear from Jacob how do you feel?
And I think he's going to be pretty honest with him,
you know, he he was honest with him on the
first day of CAM in twenty three. He could have
pitched through. He said this little side discomfort he was
dealing with, but he mentioned it and they shut him
down and became a big national story. You know. But
I think I think he understands where he's at, He
(38:02):
understands who he is and that the Rangers need to
maximize him, and he's willing to do whatever they request,
and he may not like it in the in the moment,
but he'll understand it and accept it and move on
to the next one. So you hope, you hope, you
(38:23):
hope it's twenty five. I mean, geez, twenty five would
be fantastic, but anything twenty plus I think the Rangers
would be absolutely thrilled with.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Yeah, and you know there's comments in our chat about
just how happy he looks, and you've you've mentioned it
a few times. How about he's about the guy with
in the best mood of everybody anybody at spring training
right now. But you really can see, I imagine part
of it, Jeff is just that uh you know, that
sort of knowing smile, like I'm right, I'm me, I'm
(39:00):
my arm is right. You know, that's just got to
be such an assuring feeling.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Oh absolutely, And you know, well, we'll see how We'll
see how he's feeling in six weeks, you know, I mean,
I'm sure he'll be fine. But you know, I think
I've made this analogy before. A baseball player is like
a brand new car. You know, as soon as you
drive it off the lot, it starts to lose value.
And as soon as as soon as a player starts
to work out, you know, he's never the same health wise.
(39:27):
And so you know, he one hundred percent in September
is not one hundred percent on February tenth. That's that's
for sure. So but the arm is going to get stronger.
The body. There will be some soreness, you know, from
these doubtings and whatnot, but nothing, nothing that's going to sideline.
I'm just the normal soreness, the good soreness that you
(39:49):
that you normally feel. And I think he's looking forward
to experiencing all of that stuff again. And and then
you know, it is a chess game with the hitters,
and and I know he enjoys that. I know he
feels that. You know, for all the information that pitchers
seem to have these days about hitters, hitters have just
as much information about pictures, and Jacob steadfastly believes it.
(40:13):
It's why you can't just lay in a three to
zero cookie anymore. You know, you have to. You have to.
You got to throw a change up sometimes or a
slider on that stuff. So it's a different game and
he knows it. But nobody does better when he's on
nobody does it better.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
All right, So we've got video of that of that
session you you took. I believe jeff on on Saturday,
and I believe what they as we look at it,
what they notice is what the other pictures notice is
again throwing to a catcher, just like playing catch, the
catcher doesn't have to move much right, the ball goes right.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
Yeah, right where you're supposed to go.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
This is that effortless part that, by the way, that
the clean shaven look is still hard for me to get.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
Yeah, you know, he and I even had a conversation
about that. That's how that's how good a mood he's
you know, he says he uses anarlko one boy. He
needs to get into Norseome to deal with Norelko man.
He was, he was good. He was breaking it down
for me. He looked it up for me on YouTube
on Amazon. He's like, you need to go get one
or not that expensive. I'm like, all right, think your
word for it.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Yeah, just go with it. Go with a straight razor
like the old like the old barbers.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Yeah. I don't think he's gonna he says. He he says,
he says he gets some uh, some Uh, what's the
raised razor bird?
Speaker 1 (41:41):
So he doesn't like the razor Yeah, yeah, no, it was.
It's uh, he looks young, he looks like a baby.
Maybe he wants to have that baby face. Uh as
he gets out there and gets healthy and feels better.
But I think that's the amazing thing, is just and
I mean that's one of the reasons he's so good.
I think Kyle had got you said, you know, he's
only ever seen one guy who puts the ball exactly
(42:06):
the same spot every time, or you know, exactly where
he wanted to every time, and that's Mariano Rivera. And
he says, and of course Jacob de Gram does it
about ten miles an hour faster. So yes, that's quite
an accomplishment.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
Yeah, I mean it, you know, it's just and I
say it's great. And really, you know, we haven't seen it,
like I said, we haven't seen it with our own
eyes unless we've been Mets fans in the past. So
I want to. I want to see it for myself.
And I'm looking again, looking so forward to it.
Speaker 1 (42:43):
Yeah, day in and day out, start in and start out.
It's really going to be must watch, no doubt about it.
We got more coming up. It's our cleanup segment next,
as we talk about a couple of players who are
reluctantly changing positions. Next on the d l L Strangers podcast,
(43:04):
we're in the merch today, just the simple flag here
as we can encourage you, as always to go to
store dot Allcitynetwork dot com and get yourself some merch.
And there's there's two Luka Doncic shirts on there right
now that I mentioned the other day. They're on sale
for half off, so basically that's a two for one
(43:26):
deal and it seems like just an homage, right, a
fitting tribute, and maybe it might be might bring a
tier to the eye to remember the days when Luca
was here. I saw somebody in our chat just get
seventy seven back here. I'm like that, not only is
it of control of our MAVs people, that's out of
the control of US ranger people. So I wish we
(43:48):
could by all mean there it is, Yeah, bring bring
seventy seven back to the Metroplex. Man, wish we could,
But guess what we can and you can get this
merchant dice at Storedoutallcity dot com and it's it's great
stuff and it's a reasonable price and it's going to
last you for a good long time, and you get
(44:10):
to show your colors for DLS.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
Yeah, and become a diehard. I wrote something yesterday that
was free for all of the all readers, and it's
important I included at the very top to follow the
DLS Twitter account and to become a diehard, which you
can do right now for forty eight dollars and you
(44:35):
get a free T shirt. So you're talking four dollars
a month plus a free shirt. If you put in
that value, it's like a dollar and a quarter a month.
I mean, it's outlandish, John, what we're doing here to
get you to be a diehard. But do it. It's
so worth it. And of course I think I do
pretty good work, but I know for a fact that
(44:56):
all of our other writers do tremendous work on the
Cowboys and MAVs beat. You know, old Tim Cato probably
we're out his keyboard and needs a new one with
all this Lucas stuff he've been writing. So let's go
ahead and become diehards. It's important. If you're a Metroplex
sports fan, you're not going to find better coverage than
what you get with us. It's not just the podcast
(45:18):
that we love to do, but it's also the written word,
and we have about as experience group as you can get.
So become a diar today all dllls dot com.
Speaker 1 (45:29):
Yeah, and you do great work, Jeff, not just good work.
Don't be humble, but I get it. And also like
this weekend, for example, none of our shows were on
because the MAVs and Stars are both in hiatus with
their various breaks. We didn't have shows this weekend. The
Cowboys didn't, but we were still pumping out content Jeff
in particular, but the other show and the other writers
(45:52):
as well. And so that's how you stay in touch
with what's happening with our teams even when we aren't
having shows those days, as well as you know, getting
the very latest, up to the minute stuff that's happening
out there. Do it by by becoming a die hard.
So we go to the cleanup segment and we talk
(46:12):
about guys who are are reluctant. Jeff, I think to
switch positions. Mike Trout is moving to right field, and
I listened to the interview with him today and you know,
even today he's going I mean, there's still gonna be
a few chances where I get out there in center field.
And and someone reminded him and asked him, well, you know,
(46:35):
Joe Madden suggested this a few years ago, and and
you know why now, and and Trout said, rightly, look
at my last two years. You know, I haven't been
able to play. I mean, we've got to make an
adjustment to take a little pressure off the legs and
and make it so that I can play longer. And
no doubt, uh Wash delivered that that message to him
(46:58):
and uh Man out of I'd love to hear that conversation, Jeff,
I got to be honest.
Speaker 2 (47:04):
Yeah, I would have too. Uh well, well, I think
an important note about uh this is you know, the
Angels play half of their games at Angel Stadium, and
right field is definitely easier to patrol there. You have
the funky wall, uh and and but it just it
doesn't it's not the biggest right field, So I think
(47:27):
that's part of the decision making. He won't have as
much ground to cover. You know, he doesn't have the
best arm, but because it's a little bit shallower of
a right field, the Angels think that he can counter
that with being a little bit aggressive on on on
coming in on balls, things like that. But yeah, I mean,
(47:48):
you know, you just want to see Mike Trout healthy
and playing. And I know, I know he's in the
Rangers division, and when he's healthy he has terrorized the
Rangers at times. I think I think he's hit the
most home runs in his career against the Rangers. I
could be wrong, but if I'm wrong, it's I'm not
off by much. They're big numbers, and yeah, you want him,
(48:10):
you want him to be great. I'm sure Wash had
a very very good way of delivering it, you know,
And and the Rangers tried this with with Josh Hamilton,
you know, moving Josh to left and the right out
of center, and guess what happened. Josh ended up playing
center a lot. So there is opportunity if at some
point the best option for the Angels is for Mike
(48:31):
Trout to play center field, and through let's say sixty games,
he's shown that he's healthy and strong and ready to go,
then then yeah, there might be an opportunity for him
to do that. But the most important thing for the
Angels is getting five hundred at bags for Mike Trout.
(48:52):
If you get five hundred buns for Mike Trout. You're
you're getting a Hall of Fame caliber player, you know.
That's that's the bottom line. This guy's going to be
in the Hall of Fame. It may not be as
surefire as that once seemed it was going to be
two or three years ago, but I mean, I don't
know why anybody wouldn't vote for him on the first ballot.
You look at you just look at what he did
at such a young age and sustained it for a while. Yeah,
(49:15):
Andrews have gotten him, But this guy's a Hall of
Fame player.
Speaker 1 (49:18):
Yeah, and especially if he comes back now and and becomes,
you know, an everyday type right fielder who knows you know,
that can also lengthen the career and add to those
Hall of Fame. Look, the Hall of Fame almost secure
that those first ballot Hall of Fame credentials that that
he's already amassed. The other one who's switching positions in
(49:41):
the division, Big big year for division players switching positions,
and this will probably be a slightly slower progression, but
maybe not. But it's jose L Tuve who on the
first day went with the position players, and I think
they're down in Kassimi, Florida.
Speaker 2 (49:59):
Still I think, yeah, I don't know, they might be
in West Palm, but.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
The West Palm, wherever they are, the Astros are down
there in Florida somewhere. And Josel tub was in left
field and his I wanted to listen to his comments,
so I did. Jeff after after the workout, he was like, man,
I just want to get all this talk about left
field over out of the way right now, and then
I can go back to just working on my positions
and yeah, and then he said after that all the
(50:24):
right things. I'm ready to do whatever the team needs
me to do, and I'm ready to, you know, but
again always with sort of the hint and the implication
like this is just something we're doing just in case.
Speaker 2 (50:34):
Now.
Speaker 1 (50:34):
I don't know if it's just in case, but that's
where that's where jose Al Tuvey is mentally on this
right now, it sounds like.
Speaker 2 (50:42):
Yeah, I would if I'm a third base coach, I'm
gonna be cranking that arm every time there's a runner
at second and the balls hit to jose L two
van left field. You got to test it, you got
to see it, you got to see how accurate it is.
He's had trouble with accuracy just from second base. I
don't how left field's gonna help that, so it'll be interesting.
(51:04):
I don't know how this makes the Astros a stronger team, really,
I mean I I didn't think he was a terrible
second baseman. You know, if the throwing is that big
of a deal, okay, but again, is it going to
be that better and left So it'll be interesting to
see that after and after so many good years at
(51:25):
second so god speed. It was a l two big.
I saw also, John that that Raphael Devers with the
Red Sox.
Speaker 1 (51:33):
Oh yeah, very.
Speaker 2 (51:35):
Defiantly said I ain't moving off a third base. I
don't care if they signed Alex Bregman. I am a
third baseman. So that's that was That's an interesting one too.
Speaker 1 (51:46):
And then did you see what Chorus said to that?
Speaker 2 (51:49):
I did not.
Speaker 1 (51:50):
The manager then said, just because a general manager who
is no longer here promised Rafael Devers the opportunity to
play third base into perpetuity, doesn't mean that's happening. So yeah, oh,
Alex Bregman may have begun a real brewjaha up there
(52:10):
up there in Boston or that actually they're down in
four Myers. But at any event, Yeah, that's that's one
to keep an eye on as well. Another position change
or potential position change that's out of the division. So yeah,
very interesting. And then also in the division, big day
for news there, Mark Kotse signs a three year contract
(52:33):
extension Jeff which will keep him as a part of
the Oakland Athletics organization until at least the twenty twenty
eight season, and then I believe there's an option year
for twenty nine. I tell you what would suck is
if they sucked because they're playing in a minor league
ballpark for the next three years, and then he got
fired before they had a chance to move, you know,
(52:54):
not renewed whatever, before they had a chance to move
to Las Vegas, that.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
Would be that would be stinky for sure. That that's good.
Uh he's a he's a good guy, former big league player.
Uh played for played for Bruce Bocci, you know, and
and uh so every time the Angels and then Rangers
get together, whether whether it be here or during the
regular season, there's lots of lots of hugs and jokes
(53:21):
and stuff between the two. Yeah, you know if if
I'm torn on that, because you know, I I felt
bad for Chris Woodward uh getting getting dismissed when he
was set up to fail before you know, the Rangers
uh finished off their spending plan with the Valdi into
(53:45):
Grom now, you know, And and I again I've said this, John,
I don't know if he's a good manager or not,
but I hope he I hope he gets a second chance.
He has a lot of energy, a lot of good ideas,
and I'm sure he learned from whatever he needed to learn.
I guess you can apply it elsewhere if he gets
(54:06):
another job and he's back on the big league staff
with the Dodgers as their first base coach. So good
for him, but yeah, good for Kantse. Continuity is a
big deal. I really, I really believe that, believed that
for a long time. With they don't they don't necessarily
turn over their managers a whole heck of a lot. No,
(54:27):
So that's and that's a that's a good thing. That's
a good thing.
Speaker 1 (54:32):
I think it is. And yeah, you know, I I
think they're really happy obviously with despite the record that
he's had. They know what they've given him and and
that A's team got better as this past season went on.
So a sixty nine wins season is probably they're going
to do better than that, certainly in twenty twenty five,
(54:54):
because they've done They've loaded up a bit during free
agency and during this offseason, Allen White Jeff has been
claimed by the White Sox. And so the tantalization, tantalizing
nature of that, uh, of that beginning to his professional career,
like it's still there. It's like everybody wants to see,
(55:14):
can I get out of Owen White? What we saw
from Owen White at you know, at the minor league level.
Speaker 2 (55:21):
Yeah, I would hope that that this time he would stick,
you know, I stick with the White Sox. Obviously he
has a base of knowledge with will venable be It
probably not a ton, but they at least know, they
at least know each other's name and we'll shake hands
and kind of comfort.
Speaker 1 (55:42):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (55:42):
Probably a little ease of a transition for for Owen. Yeah,
you know, this is his fourth team of the offseason,
if you include the Rangers, third time being claimed, and
it's a it's a whirlwind. You know, he was probably
in Florida, Uh know, have no doubt he was in Florida,
and now he's got to pack up his stuff and
(56:03):
and go across the country. He's he's a married young man,
and so he's got to probably pack up the wife
too and find a place to live. Although he does
know a lot of former Rangers, so I'm sure they'd
be more than accommodating at least for a couple of
nights to let him sleep on the couch or in
a spare bedroom. So I look forward to seeing him.
(56:25):
I'm sure we will at some point here in the
course of the spring. And yeah, I mean he may
he may end up on their on their staff. You know,
he's kind of transitioned last year to becoming a reliever,
and that might be that might be his future right now.
But he is in an arm The guys still are
(56:45):
curious that that. Teams are still curious about and want
to see if they can, to your point, maximize the
potential there.
Speaker 1 (56:51):
Yeah, so back to the top story for just a
minute before we say so long, and that is that
Luke Jackson is back on those Rangers squad. He is
on the forty man roster, which means they had to
put Josh Bores on the sixty day d l to
make a room for Luke on the roster. And I
(57:11):
know you're gonna go chat with him, Jeff. But obviously
the fact that he's on the forty man, you know,
might give him. It does give him a leg up
on breaking camp with this team, what with his experience
and the fact that he's got a major league contract.
Speaker 2 (57:29):
Oh yeah, he's on the team, you know. And then
you know, so you figure he has The Rangers have
six relievers and Luke Jackson, off the top of my head,
Chris Martin, Shawn Armstrong, Hoby Milner, Robert Garcia, and Jacob Webb.
All right, So then that leaves two spots. And I've always,
(57:50):
I've long thought that Mark Church belongs on this rockster.
I still feel that way. So is it Mark Church
and Dane Dunny? Or is it Dunning and Jack Lyder?
You know? Could could Church go to the miners? Uh?
You know, he only has one Big leaguinning, but or
two maybe? But what does the Rangers say, no, go
(58:12):
back and pitch a little bit more. He miss a
lot of time last year, even though he pitched in
the Fall League. Let's make sure everything's all right. But
the so there's two spots now open. And uh so
we'll see what I keep saying, we'll see what happens.
But it's going to be interesting to see how they
how they they pair all this stuff together because they
(58:32):
do have a shortfall of innings in the bullpen. Now,
this could also be a ed occasion if they only
take one of those guys that Kamar Rocker won't be
on the opening day roster. You know that that that
they feel that they feel good about everybody's ability to
pitch deep into games and say maybe Malley Ord and
(58:52):
Grom So geez, you know, it changes things a little bit.
I don't think it answers closer question. I don't think
that's been been solved with this signing. But you know,
it's another arm another option, and you know, a guy
who's had success in the recent past. You know, you
(59:14):
kind of look at two those guys that signed Hobe
Milner and Set Armstrongs. They didn't have they didn't have
great seasons last year. So they're bounce you know, the
big bounce back candidate. A lot of teams seem to
be high on bounce back candidates well because they're pretty
affordable for the most part. But I'm sure that the
Ranger scouts and R and D figured something out or
(59:37):
think they have something figured out that'll help Loop Jackson.
Speaker 1 (59:40):
Fantastic, Jeff. You go talk to Luke, tell them we
said hi, and we'll be looking forward to all that
you see here and report from tomorrow's workout with the
full squad and uh Man. Great work today. We appreciate
all of it, and uh We'll keep watching you on
the social media channels. Want all of you to follow Jeff,
(01:00:02):
but also to become a die hard so you can
get the very latest from Rangers spring training. We'll do
this again tomorrow, Jeff at two o'clock on the DLLs
Rangers podcast, All City Like the Man.
