Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rex in the morning, and I've got a very special
guest on the phone. I'm so excited, Angela Johnson Reyes.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:07):
I'm doing so good now this morning. I know you're
doing like the interview tour. So you've called like a
lot of radio stations and stuff like that. Oh yeah,
do they all ask you the same kind of questions?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
And they do, And I'm waiting to hear if you
got it too, let's hear it.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
No, you and I famously have had conversations instead of
like interview type things, and it's so much more enjoyable
over the years watching you now with your Is this
your your seventh special? You're doing yourself?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
It is, it's my number seven. I can't believe I
have seven one hour specials.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
How how common or how you know? How rare is that?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I mean, I think pretty rare. I don't know that
many comedians who have that many specials. There is some
I know Kathy Griffin has a lot of specials. Yeah,
I just saw recently. I don't remember it, but there's
a few comedians who have a good number of specials.
But it's it's rare.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
But seven's pretty great. And you did what you directed
and produced this one as well as wrote it, and
that was the first time for you.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I did all the things this time. I've never directed
my own special, so this was my first time doing that,
and you know, people have asked me, like, how do
you direct yourself in a comedy special? For me, it
was all pre production. It was all I went through
my hour of material. I picked which camera angles and
which shots I wanted for each joke, and then I
communicate that to my producers and my DP and they

(01:39):
just make sure to cover my special from those angles
and shots that I've requested. And then in the editing
I sit with the editor and I put it all together.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Was it easier for you to do it that way
or to let somebody else take the wheel?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Oh? It's harder, but worth it.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
It is so intricate, it's so from the the mind
new from details of Let's switch from this shot to
this shot a millisecond sooner, like the way you're catching
the back of my head for even a second. I
don't like it. Let's cut a second sooner like that
kind of stuff for the whole hour.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Would you say you're kind of like an anal person
where when it comes to like cleanliness in your home
and is to carry on to all aspects of your
life or is it just career wise?

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Let me tell you my husband wishes that this carried
over to my home life. Okay, oh does he wish?
My husband is the one who he's a military brat, baby, yeah,
and everything is clean and organized, and I'm kind of
like a tornado compared to him. Now, I'm not I'm
not messy, sloppy, like I'm not gross, but compared to him,

(02:48):
he gets anxiety if I leave stuff out on the
counter for too long, and he'll be like, Babe, this
has been sitting here for three days. Throw it away
or put it away? I mean, and I've I'm like
three days, that's nothing.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
You sound very much like Maya Michelle. She and I
have been together for twelve years. We're not married because
we don't want to mess it up. But I accuse
her of building little nests, you know, like one day
you'll walk by and they'll be like like a a
like a little face brush thing sitting on the counter, huh.
And then like four hours later they'll be like a
stack of random paper clips and then an if an

(03:22):
iPhone stand and then everything gets built into the nest,
and then at the end of the week you just go, hey,
look what is all this stuff? And then she gets
really mad at me if I tell her to take
apart the nest and put all the things where they
actually belong. It's like, this is why I can't find
the nail clipper because it's over here.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
It's so funny, but let me tell you, she knows
exactly where everything is.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
It's over here in the nest. H. Well, that's cool.
We're is this we see this? You can see this
on YouTube, right, and it's called ugly baby?

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yes, why ugly baby?

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Why why did you title it ugly baby?

Speaker 2 (03:56):
People always think like, it's my own baby. Surely you're
not calling your own baby ugly.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
I didn't think that.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Now, while there are some ugly babies in the world,
and much respect to all the parents who can keep
it one hundred and they could keep it real and
be like, yeah, that was me, I had an ugly baby.
I love those parents. I'm actually not talking about my
own child. I'm talking about me. I am the ugly
baby that I speak of. Yeah, but you wind up

(04:22):
get some of my own baby pictures and I was like, Mom,
did you drink alcohol?

Speaker 1 (04:26):
What is this? But you wound up ridiculously hot, So
it's like a different thing. And I know lots of
girls that I went to high school with that you
would never even think to go to the movies with
or any of that stuff, and then you see them
now and you're like, oh, damn if I only had
a clue. So those a lot of those ugly babies
grow up to be you know, like raiders, cheerleaders and

(04:48):
you know star studied, a award winning comedians.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yes we do, and thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Well, how's the book, because last time we talked, your
book was just coming out.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, man, it's been a minute. So my book, Who
Do I Think I Am? Stories of Chola wishes and
Caviar dreams. It's my story of how I got to
where I am today and all the stories that I've
never shared in my stand up. There's a lot of
times I want to tell a certain story on stage,
but it doesn't work because in stand up we do

(05:22):
what's called cut the fat. That means you take all
the details out and you get to the point of
your punchline. But there's so many stories that I have
where all the details are so magical and beautiful and
it helps tell the story. And I'm like, you know what,
I'm going to save this one for a book one day.
And so I started saving all these stories that I
wanted to write in a book one day, and then
I did. And that's what it is. It's who do

(05:43):
I think I am? Stories of Chila wishes and caviar dreams.
And I also have my podcast. My podcast comes out
every Tuesday. It's called Fungula and we just joined Nate
Bargetzi's podcast network, Nate land Podcast Network. My Fungela podcast
is a gratitude podcast, and we get to know all

(06:05):
of our guests through the lens of gratitude, whether it's
another comedian, a musician, a chef, an actor, whoever it
is that we're interviewing, we get to know them through
the lens of gratitude. Now. And is this kind of
like five things they're grateful for?

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Is this like a kind of are you a little
bit of a yogi when it comes to this?

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Yeah, it's kind of like a mental health and comedy podcast.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
That's cool.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
And it started because gratitude is one of my mental
health tools that I use anytime I'm struggling with anxiety
or depression or stress or anything. Gratitude is one of
my go to tools that I use. It's free, and
it's an immediate response that you can feel in your
body if you tune in and let it. And so
that's what we do. We ask our guests five things

(06:46):
they're grateful for throughout their life. It could be something like,
you know, I had a mentor when I was in
high school that I wouldn't be where I am today
if it wasn't for this person. Or it could be
something as simple as you know, what I found twenty
dollars in the parking lot yesterday made my day. And
what we usually get to some really cool stories from
their life and it's just a really special way to

(07:07):
get to know people.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Do you find that you go back to that frequently?
I mean, are you one of those people where you
carry a slight bit of depression and sometimes you have
to remind yourself that the life that you have right
now is the one that you dreamt about having when
you were younger.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Absolutely, there's those moments where life can feel heavy and
you have to turn to all your tools that you
have and for me. That's gratitude. That's my breathing techniques.
That is, I have supplements that I take that are
just helping with my gut health and my microbiome, and
like doing all the things to help me stay in

(07:46):
a healthy state of mind and a healthy body, and
continuing to cultivate joy and share that joy with people.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
That is really really cool. See, I told you I
wasn't going to ask you radio questions.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
I love it. I see that. That's why I like you.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
It's easier just to have a conversation that way. I
don't have to think or do any of the work
or do any of the work. Really. So, Ugly Baby
is available to view on YouTube, and so it's out now, correct,
And I mean that's that's out now. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
So you're not getting free.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
You're not asking people to buy a disc anywhere.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
No, you don't have to buy anything. All you got
to do is spend some time. Put it on while
you're folding your laundry, put it on while you're cooking dinner.
You can listen to it while you're driving. And it's free.
There's no paywall in it's my seventh hour special. And
I think you're really gonna love it.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Will this eventually make its way to like, you know,
one of the popular cable TV channels you think? Or
is it gonna live on YouTube? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:49):
I don't know. It's forever going to live on YouTube,
that's for sure. You can always watch it for free
on YouTube. But yeah, I'm sure eventually we'll clip it
up and put it on on you know, radio station,
then on you know, wherever you can find it. I
just want people to see it, love it, feel the
joy that comes from it, and then take that joy

(09:09):
with them to their workplace, to their family, to their city,
and just let joy marinate wherever they are.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
That's fantastic. I have to tell you, last time that
we talked, I had a very awkward moment and it's
lived inside me since last time, since last time we spoke.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
What did you do?

Speaker 1 (09:23):
I was learning the equipment that I'm now using right now.
We had like this whole software thing because everything's computerized,
and I was like going in between songs and talking
to you and we have a moment that you probably
never even thought of. And it's weird. How you know
you can have a wonderful life and this one little thorn. Eh, Well,
we'll hate you. And it has been something that has

(09:46):
circled my brain since last time we talked.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
And what happened?

Speaker 1 (09:50):
You and I are talking on the air and I
am about to go into the next song and I'm like, hey,
Angela Johnson Reyes, can you hang on for me for
a second? And you said you go, yes, I can,
and I said do that and that It felt aggressive
when I said it, and I thought.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
What did I just? That was you?

Speaker 1 (10:11):
I was like, can you can you hang Can you
hang on for a second? And you said sure? And
I went do that and it was it was my
brain trying to pick up anything to say because I
couldn't figure out which button to hit to get out
of it into the next thing. So from now on
I've taken do that. It sounded very hey do that

(10:33):
tell you?

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Let me tell you. I've been thinking about this. I've
been thinking about this since that day, and I'm so
glad you brought this up. I appreciate the apology. I
can now sleep easy. Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Lying.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
I didn't even clock that. Have just been you need
to listen to my podcast and practice some gratitude.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Oh no, I I do it daily. My my girl.
She teaches yoga. She's a yoga teacher instructor for like
the last twenty years. She teaches people who want to
be yoga instructors. And she does this weekly and has
her own YouTube thing, and people you know watch her
do her her presentations almost every weekend. And so I

(11:18):
learned all about gratitude and how to really be aware
of yourself and the damage you can do by carrying
around negative thoughts. And it kept me from doing it.
But that one little thorn from Angela Johnson Rayas do that.
It felt real backhanded to me at the time, and
I was like, I'm gonna tell her I'm sorry next

(11:39):
time I talk to her.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
So sweet, Well, you're very kind. I forgive you.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
I was learning equipment. I know what to do. You
have been wonderful to talk to. The new stand up
special Ugly Baby, available for you to view for free
on YouTube. Look up Angela Johnson Rayes again, you have
been absolutely fantastic. Thanks for joining me this morning on
se one on one. Thank you
