Speaker 1 (00:00):
Arger situation, even the Padres ownership history. Has it always
been smooth?
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Salem Setie goes on Alan Sliva.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
I felt like we went through a stage a baseball
where everything was so predetermined.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Why even have a manager? What's the point having out?
Dear Safer? All right, Dan.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Diego soun of California, what's going on? This is Shaffer
and Sliwa on a Wednesday afternoon, Padres heading home. Let's
go five, one hundred overall, Vinda our Padres inside will
join us from Pittsburgh, the steal City coming up in
about three minutes. Overall, Alan, we touched on this obviously
a ton over the last week. They go to the
road two and four overall. Yep, they lose Game one
(00:38):
in Boston, did they not?
Speaker 4 (00:39):
They did?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
They lost Game one to Boston and in a spot
game two.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Remember they were up to one and then Marie Holme
gives up around two to two, and then Tatis comes
through with Loreano.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
So when you think about it from two and five
and where they were, they win four of their last
five games today convincedly behind Michael King. I think we've
said repeatedly in one former fashion, either on this show
or with Kevin wherever. I think the general consensus is, hey,
six and six facing guys like school Ball and Schiens
and Framburg, Valdez and whom ever else. I think you
signed up for that, and that was at the start
(01:09):
of the year. Here they are coming home six and six.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Overall.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
I don't know when playoff tickets are being sold, but
I'm getting them right now.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
You're gonna get them now.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
You want to get them right now? Yet I'm the
bandwagon now, No, really phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
I think we were saying this yesterday because when we're
doing the show yesterday, the game was going on. Kind
of got this gift today to have a game that
early in nine point thirty first pitch, But when they
lost yesterday to Paul Skins and it kind of all
fell apart there towards the end, in the latter part
of the game, it was like, all right, world's not
going to end.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Go get this one today. Come back six and six.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
You got the Colorado Rockies coming in, you know, just
try to play better baseball. They were so bad at
Pecko Park. You gotta feel good about where they're sitting today.
And I think you and I were doing the math
here this obviously is not This is not a coincidence.
In the games they've won, they're scoring, they're averaging five
and a half runs. In the games they've lost their averaging.
(02:05):
I think they have twelve runs total over the six
losses that they have, so two runs is the average there.
So it just kind of gives you a little bit
of an idea, obviously, for the Padres to get back
on track and to put themselves in a position where
they're six and six. You gotta feel good about that
because the baseball has also been better. The pitching has
also been better, not been perfect. Maybe there's some times
again a little lucky with some poor defense from the
(02:28):
opposing teams, but take it all day long.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Yeah, I have two takeaways. One we talked about off air.
One of them for me and you just touched on
as well, and I completely agree just Michael King in general. Yes,
if you're getting Michael King like this, and I'm not
saying every outing, but if you know Michael King is
Michael King, that's a huge win. Here's my second takeaway,
and we'll talk about this with Kevin. I'm sure at
some point Manny Machado had his first day off his
(02:50):
first day off last year was one hundred and fifty
games in and he had an off day. I would
assume just scheduled off the top of the season with
his twelfth overall game to go to Pittsburgh with our
Padres in center.
Speaker 6 (03:03):
Padre's reward with Kevin Acy, He's brought to you by
Hamul Casino Resort A Players. This is all yours Hamoul
Casino Resort A players place.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
All right, Padres are six and six. There's a lot
to react to. Kevin Acies or Padres insider with us
right now. I'm Scheffer and Sleiwa from Pittsburgh. Kevin, we
talked about this, I think weeks ago. We said, when
you're facing Gazac School, Bule and Skiens and whomever else,
we thought six and six was maybe a desired result.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
And here they are.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
They went through it kind of a unique way to
get here, But at the end of the day, I
think most Padres fans would take where they are right.
Speaker 7 (03:39):
Well, yeah, we did talk about it. I did think
about that today.
Speaker 8 (03:43):
Finally got something right.
Speaker 7 (03:45):
But also after starting two and four with the way
that the offense progressed on this trip, the way the
offense came through in the way that it said it would,
you know, even when they were two and four and
hitting you know, one ninety seven, but they said that
before that when they were hitting one eighty two, because
they did actually kind of break out the last game
of the homestand so yeah, and then to you know,
(04:07):
come on this trip continue. Look, those Pittsburgh starters are good, man,
And I thought it was a you know, it was
it was an excellent trip.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Kevin, stay on Michael King here for a quick second too,
as we kind of look at what he's done so
far this year in his three starts, and just how
encouraging is it to see that he could potentially be
the player that the Podres are obviously hoping for. No,
he's not the ace technically at the moment. It's Nick Povetta.
(04:37):
But just just how big do you think these three
starts have been?
Speaker 7 (04:40):
You know, I absolutely agree, like like he's not happy
with him and and gush, if you're as talented as
him and you're making the money that he is and
you want to be that guy, then he shouldn't be.
But but I thought that they were really encouraging, Like
every one of them had their encouraging moments, you know,
based on gush, what what what?
Speaker 4 (04:58):
How?
Speaker 7 (04:58):
Last year finished for him? And when I say finished,
basically the second half, unable to really do more than
pitch out in the bullpen and the postseason. And I
thought that the fact that he's gone what he went
five and then five and then today six plus was
able to get up to ninety five pitches and what
(05:20):
he did today, and I'm sure that I didn't even
have the He addressed it a little bit, but I
didn't have the heart to like press him on it
because I've talked him about it so many times. One
of the traits of an eighth type pitcher is to
not have your best stuff to be behind to you know,
be wondering where is it, and you can't fix it
in the middle of the game, and you still battle through.
(05:42):
I realized he wasn't facing the twenty seven Yankees or
even the you know two twenty six Yankees.
Speaker 8 (05:47):
But like I'm telling you, if you watch these.
Speaker 7 (05:50):
Games, the Pirates put together good at bets and Michael
did not have it for half of his start today,
and the guy through six scoreless innings before you know,
going back out there in the South and giving up
two hits and then the run scored. I mean that
was a grindy impressive start.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yeah, I guess an offense that to start the year.
You know, Pittsburgh's you know, had a pretty good offense
obviously the first two weeks of the year. Kevin Acys
are Padres insater. He's with us right now on Schaeffer
and Sliwa. I remember you wrote in March about the
plan to rest Manny Machado more. But I remember we
had a conversation about this. It's like, it's one thing
to have that as a plan, but it's like the
Mike Tyson line, it's like everyone's got a plan until
(06:29):
they get punched, so to speak. But credit to the
Pondres organization and Craig Stamon and even Machado because last
year you know better than me, right, it took like
one hundred and fifty games for him to get a
scheduled off day. Yeah, today he gets it in the
twelfth game of the year. What does that signify? And
how often would you expect him? Like is it monthly?
Is it every couple of weeks or how many scheduled
off days do you think they're going to put in there?
Speaker 5 (06:51):
For him this year.
Speaker 7 (06:52):
Well, yeah, I'm not surprised at all because I you know,
I said, this is who Craig Stamon is there, like,
this is one example of why he was hired. Not
only relationship with Manny, but you know, somebody could walk
in off the street. Craig is very gonna Craig's going
to do what he thinks right for the team and
that he thinks is right. And there was no doubt.
But yeah, the reason there could have been doubt in
(07:14):
people's mind is, hey, this is Manny Machado. Man Minchada
played one hundred and fifty games for a day off
last year because of many Machado like and if you
read the story that I wrote in the spring, I
mean the quotes in there lead no doubt that, like
that's like a man thing for him. That's like, that's
like who he is. And the stats, the fact that
he's played in more games than anyone else since twenty
(07:35):
fifteen will tell you that unless Paul Moushman plays tonight,
then they'll be tied. But like, it is remarkable what
Manny does. But there was really no doubt they were
going to do this. As for how often I think
this might be a signal. I'm not saying every twelve games.
I'm not even saying there's a prescription. But it got
out of hand last year. There's no way they wanted
(07:56):
to go one hundred and fifty games without him resting.
But at some point then the offense was struggling. They
were struggling. They wanted to, you know, get a playoff spot.
They weren't chasing the Dodgers and stil what mid September
and it was like both Manny and Mike Shill determined
he couldn't sit, and so.
Speaker 8 (08:13):
They got to get ahead of it this year. So
in case they're in that situation.
Speaker 7 (08:16):
Again where many does need to play forty fifty games
in a row. He has, He's not already tired. He
should have had days off earlier. Mike Shild did a
pretty good job managing the different parts of his roster.
That was one, Hey, no one's perfect. That got away
from him last year.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Kevin, is that tough for somebody like Craig Stamon or
any of these young managers who are looking at such
a veteran. Let's hypothetically so, Manny Machado says, no, I'm
not I don't want to sit this early in the season.
I'm good to go, I'm healthy, I'm feeling fine. How
tough is that to get one of your stars and
to paint that big picture of look for the you're
(08:55):
actually doing this because it could potentially help us down
the road. Is that a tough position that the man
and how often does that interaction happen with the players?
Speaker 7 (09:03):
I think it's really tough.
Speaker 8 (09:05):
I mean there's a reason, you know, certain players haven't
moved down in.
Speaker 7 (09:09):
Lineups here with the past couple managers. There's you know,
there's we'll see when Craig gets to you know, if
people are struggling, certain names are struggling. What he does
there in terms of you know, we are we're already
talking about his lineups didn't get drastic, but like I doubt,
I don't have any doubt that he will. But that's
a really it's the biggest part of the job handling
these guys. And I've talked about it with you guys
(09:31):
before and and a lot of places because I I
know that the media and stands, we get all caught
up in game management and there's not a manager out
there who's managed in the past saying ten years or so,
and probably guys before that, but that wouldn't tell you
managing end game strategy decisions is no more than twenty
(09:52):
percent of the job. This other stuff is the eighty percent,
and it only is getting more as managers have less
power in some organizations sway and as players look, let's
be honest right enough to sound like an old man,
but you know these kids have changed. And then you
got a veteran like Manny Machado, who's like, who does have.
Speaker 8 (10:10):
The argument of Hey, this is how I've played, and
this is.
Speaker 7 (10:14):
How I've succeeded. I'm better when I play, and so
it needs a strong personality. But I said this from
the day Craig Stamon was higher. You know, I covered
him for eight years and I said, yeah, I was surprised,
but I don't know what kind of manager is going
to be. But he's got the personality and he's got
the sway over players including Manny Machada and man when
(10:36):
Craig Stammil was a middle reliever on this team, Manny
Machado listened to Craig Stalmon on things Really.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Good insight from Kevin a Cerpodca's Insider with us right
now in Schaeffer and Sliwa It's funny I posted something
about where we started, like, hey, six and six, it's
kind of what you're asking for. I think it's a
good enough start, and it's social media, so take it
for whatever it's worth.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
But one of the immediate replies was.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Well, they can't they can't hit good pitching, so they
can't win the World serious. I'm like, well, first of all,
that's the World Series is seven months, so relaxe.
Speaker 5 (11:05):
But to the general you.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Should take down your posts. You're right, the World Series
take it.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
Over, You're right.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
But to the general point, I mean he may be
onto something in terms of look at what they've done
against Skeens, scooble, Valdez, shoot, even Mitch Keller here today.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
Would you call that a concern?
Speaker 1 (11:23):
The fact that this lineup with disinvestment, with the pieces
they have in it consistently hasn't good, hasn't hit consistently
good pitching.
Speaker 7 (11:33):
Okay, So then you know, to be fair to people
on social media too, it doesn't leave room for us
to get context from them either, right, Like where like
has had that person said hey, you know, we probably
should keep an eye out down the road right for
how these guys do against top starters, I would say, amen,
brother or sister, I would absolutely agree with that, that
(11:57):
that is something to watch out. To say that right
now is like, uh but yeah, today was they played
ten games the seventh quality start against them, and I
can't remember how many of them not just quality starts,
but like shut out six inn ites or whatever and
so yeah. But also bramber Belt does I think has
(12:18):
allowed two runs in his three starts. Derek Scooble's pretty good,
Paul Schames is pretty good, Bubba Tandler's pretty good. Mitch
Keller can be very good. Take a look at his career.
Yes he can get pummeled, but he also has plenty
of starts like this, Like Sonny Gray is pretty good.
You know, I know a Landing Roof got shelled by
(12:39):
the mess, but he's okay. Logan Web's pretty good. Like
they have really been you know, they've been under it
here now. Hey, absolutely a valid concern, man, Like I mean,
I've written about it. You guys probably spent a lot
of time talking about it. This is absolutely something to
keep an eye on. They wanted coming into the season
to do better against starting pitching. It was a few
(13:02):
days before the season. I wrote about it that they
don't want to have to always take a time through
the through the order. Well, but also in that story
it was pointed out how they were going to start
the season. I get some really good pitchers, so hey,
maybe that's it. And then also Craig Stanmond's been very upfront.
I've got some good stuff from tomorrow's newsletter from Nick
Cassianis has been a part of this whole h you know,
(13:24):
switching and mixing and matching, But Craig's been pretty much
one about we're using this first part of the year
to figure out our lineup and to figure out where
the pieces fit, and so let's list let's just slow
it down a little bit.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Kevin'll find a one for me looking at your article
yesterday in the UTI, great article on Joe musk Grove
and just kind of where he's at based off of
your interaction with him, and I'm sure for Joe and
for a lot of Padre fans surprised how he's still
dealing with the issues that he's dealing with. Can the
(14:01):
Padres do you think depend on Joe Musgrove at any
point over these next couple of months or is this
kind of a wait and see.
Speaker 7 (14:10):
Depend That's a key word right there. Can they depend
on him? And I want to be careful because I
know how people react and and you know what I
would say by the strictest term of can they depend No,
And I based that on talking with people and being like, so,
what's up, Well, don't know, don't know, just going to
see every day to day and so like. And the
(14:31):
fact is he's only played catch. And the fact is
Joe's done pretty upfront about this, And so do they
anticipate that in the next couple of months he's going
to pitch for them? Yes? But can they depend on it?
Is it really front of mind for them right now? No?
It is not one thing I do want to say
anyone that questions Joe must Grove's dedication or his desire
(14:56):
and how hard he works, Like this guy has worked
too hard in the past to come back from insane injuries.
He pitched through his arm could have given out at
any point. In twenty twenty four, he pitched through pain.
That makes twenty starts, including some pretty damn good ones
at the end of the season, help the Thunders getting
the playoffs in twenty four, Like, ah, it's not my
(15:18):
job to defend players, but it is my job to
sort of set the record straight. And if there was
someone I was going to defend, it would be Joe
musk grow And it's like insanity. It's like insanity to
suggest that Joe Muskrove like it doesn't want to get
out there, or is it working hard enough or whatever.
That's just like, yeah, I can't even put it into words.
(15:39):
And that's bad because I'm supposed to be able to
put things in the words. But I'm like, that to
me is mind. It means you have not been paying.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Attention completely agree and remarkably in doing this sports talk
as long as we've done it, not not Shaefferd's sliwa,
but as long as we do sports talk each it
every day. That's never even been broached with, Like I
don't even cross. I don't even if someone were to
text that in, I won't even entertain that. That's the
most ridiculous. I mean, that's so utterly insane to think
(16:08):
about a with a professional athlete, and be with someone
of the caliber of Joe Musgrove.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
Kevin travels safely.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
We will catch up with you back in San Diego
as the Rockies gets to town out tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (16:20):

Let's go to the phones if you want to weigh in,
padres are six and six? Uh does that work for you?
Speaker 5 (17:33):
Does that work for you? Six and six for me?
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Yeah? Oh yeah, yeah, I'm good. Five yeah, of course
you take that.
Speaker 10 (17:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Eight seven seven seven six seven four seven sixty. What
do you make of the padres six and six?
Speaker 5 (17:44):
Start?
Speaker 1 (17:44):
Let's go to Luke online one Luke, you're on with
Shaffer and Sleia.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
Thanks for calling it man, head.
Speaker 8 (17:50):
Boys, thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 11 (17:51):
I was just wanting to put out there, John.
Speaker 7 (17:53):
You always talk about at the end of the season,
it's a game or two here or there. And if
you remember last year, that game, the tyber.
Speaker 12 (18:00):
The Dodgers had on us was looming so large coming
down the stretch that these series against the Pirates and
these these like good on L teams that you only
played twice are huge series within could come down to
it in the Wildcard.
Speaker 7 (18:11):
So I just want to I know it's early, but
these are big series. I guess these are Wildcar contending
teams that were going to be playing.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
It could come down to it.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Thanks for calling in, Luke, and listen this is I mean, yeah,
we can every squad. I don't care if you win
one hundred games, everyone's going to remember a game you
should have won, a game, you.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Stole a game exactly.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
But I do think that you know what Luker's refer
what Luke's referring to, there's some true to that. I mean,
six and six. If you're the Padres, you start out
two and five, you'll take six and six in a heartbeat.
They start out two and four, they lose their first
one in the Boston Red Sox, and then they go
off you know, obviously a little bit of a run here.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
How they're winning the games too, I think matters.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
I think the way that you know, Ac was just
talking about it, which I love because you and I
might look at Michael King and we know what he's
done in the past for the Podreys, but how big
is he going to be this year? Randy Vasquez has
been a nice start, and a lot of people thinking
Randy Vasquez is going to be good for the Podrais,
but I don't think you really know. Of course, Nick Povetta,
you need to be you need him to be an ace,
(19:17):
which is where they've put him in this in this rotation.
So I think you gotta feel good. I mean we're
talking over these last I mean, think about last week,
how negative we were, even off of a win against
the Giants. That tune has changed a little bit. Of course,
can it change again against the Rockies, of course it can.
But I think you gotta feel good. That they gotta
feel good flying back home to San Diego, knowing that
(19:39):
they ran off a few of these wins here to
put themselves in this position.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
I agree.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
I think it speaks highly of what's possible, because I
thought this was tricky Boston and Pittsburgh for a lot
of reasons. Boston starting the year one and five, coming
home for their home opener, Pittsburgh having won five straight,
at one point throwing.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
All the new Skins.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
Yeah, I was playing front no one.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
I mean, well, not necessarily, because I do want to
give them credit with their attendants. Started with eight thousand,
what they get to got to nine thousand yesterday today
blasted through.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Give me a guest, how many today?
Speaker 5 (20:12):
Ten to five?
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Ten?
Speaker 5 (20:13):
Look at the look at the Pirates.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Not ten, five, ten, ten. Yeah, they wouldn't lead the prizes.
Speaker 5 (20:21):
A lot coast league in attendance.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
I'll tell you right now, if I looked at PCL
attendance leaders, I wouldn't be surprised if El Paso was
averaging as many.
Speaker 5 (20:28):
Well, the Pirates had opening.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Day, so they draw one means on the mound and
only have nine.
Speaker 9 (20:35):
That alone.
Speaker 5 (20:36):
Thank you for just saying that's alone. He's gone like sorry,
Like I'm not dealing with that.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
If I, if I'm this generational transcendent player, we can
go out when and win eighty nine games and make
the playoffs one playoffs one year, I'm not staying, Like
I need way more support everywhere for me to stay.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
And I hate to say that.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Because I think it's probably good for the sport if
he stays there as opposed to go to the Yankees
or the right sock for the Dodgers. But I just
I just don't see the reasons why they're playing in front.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
Of those reasons are fair. Like I think what I
can't stand about baseball. I cannot stand the structure of baseball.
You and I've talked about it, We'll continue to talk
about it. I don't want to see a lockout for
many reasons but if that's going to fix the sport,
then I want to see a lockout.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
See what happens.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
What you can't do is if I take the skeme
side of things, and you're telling me that not only
can I make so much more money somewhere else, put
the money aside. I don't have people that are coming
out to support me, because I know if I'm representing
the Red Sox or the Giants, or the Padres or
the Ink. Go down the list of just some of
(21:45):
these different franchise, the Saint Louis Cardinals, all that I
know people are I'm gonna get the place sold out.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
I can't get nine thousand. I can't get ten thousand
to come out for a game. And watch me.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
It's in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
It really is insane. All right, we'll get back to
your calls coming up on the other side. Plus we'll

The Padres are six and six.

Eight seven seven seven six seven four seven sixty Are
you good with their start? Eight seven seven seven six
seven four seven sixty plus one you're.
Speaker 7 (22:13):
A doctor about Trimfaia visit Trimfaya dot com or call
one eight hundred five to two six seven seven three six.
Speaker 9 (22:22):
San Diego Sports No.
Speaker 11 (22:29):
First Report is sponsored by unbound dot org. The Padres
won their series against the Pirates today. They won Game three,
eight to two. Michael King picked up his first win
of the year. The Friars went four and two on
the first road trip of the season, and they come
home tomorrow to start a home series against Colorado over
the weekend. In other baseball news, Angels digent Jorge Solaier
(22:52):
and a Bravece pitcher Andaldo Lopez each got a seven
game suspension from Major League Baseball today after they were
ejected filowing their participate patient and last night's big brawl
between the.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
Angels and Braves.
Speaker 11 (23:04):

Speaker 2 (23:25):
Call me sloppy. Uh No, what I just said, I
don't know, but that was the best I was the
best break, right there was it?
Speaker 7 (23:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (23:34):
Okay, so let's explain.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
So we're gonna go back to the phones of If
you want to, you know, talk to us on air,
you just call eight seven seven seven six seven, or
you can talk to us or you never know Ifaul
just literally pick up the phone because Brent's been cutting
sound like he's been getting audio ready for the show.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
To do that, he does it in another room.
Speaker 1 (23:51):
So Brent leaves the room and then the phone starts
ringing and there is a phone where me and Alan
are I never pick it up ever, ever, ever, and
the fun start ringing. I'm like, oh man, we're gonna
to get Brent back in here. Alan's like, just pick
up the Phone's amazing, My god, that's interesting. He casually
picking it up.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Hey, what's going on? This John from the Schaeffer and
Slee a show.
Speaker 5 (24:13):
Like this is actually John? And I guess John, So
you could call us at the break and I'll.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
Just talk to you off, have a nice conversation, or.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
If you want to talk on air, just call eight
seven seven seven six seven four seven six.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
Life issues, something going on talk about maybe you and
your maybe you and your significant other are having an issue.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Both of you. Come on talk to John.
Speaker 10 (24:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Absolutely. Maybe you saw me at Mendocino Farms earlier in
the week. Shout out to Justin, who was talking to
me for a while about the astags, the padres and SDFC.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
If you want, Justin, if you just want to call
the hotline, we can talk.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
I just love that.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
Between breaks as well. All right, let's go back to
the phones.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
Alan on line one, no relation for Allan sent back
with us here. Thanks for calling into Shaeffer and Slavey.
Speaker 13 (24:54):
Hey, it's nice to know that I can get a
free therapist.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
Doubt he's ready to go, man.
Speaker 13 (25:01):
Yeah, I just wanted to talk about how it was
surprising to see how King got brought into the seventh inning.
I think it's kind of uh with you on that
kind of Yeah. You can just see how sam And
is trying to trust gain trust from his uh, his pictures.
I think the last you know, eleven games, we're just
trying to figure out how he's going to manage the bullpen.
But it's nice to see that, you know, he could
(25:21):
trust his uh starting pictures and then hopefully you know,
we could get into a better rhythm as the season
goes on.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
Thanks, that's well said. I mean, I was surprised you
didn't like it. It was over ninety pitches, right.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
I didn't like it just because it got two batters
that one got to them both were on I think
second and third. Yeah, I didn't like it for the
mere fact. I just I felt like he had six
really clean innings. And listen, this could be one of
those relationship things like we were just talking about with
Manny Machado having the day off. Is that one of
(25:55):
those I'm gonna listen to you. I'm gonna give you
you know. My opinion on it is he saying, is
Craig Stamon talking to Michael King in between innings and saying,
and Michael King saying, let me go out there, let
me let me just let me give me one more,
give me a couple more at bats, let me just
kind of let me get at this. The only problem
I had is it just wasn't necessary. The whole reason
(26:16):
how this team is built and the reason you got
this bullpen that you have, I would have liked to
see him just get pulled after six.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
And I also think it speaks the importance of Jason
Adam because.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, you're right about that.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
I went from King to Kyle Hart, who's been very
good for them. But heart stuff is it's fine. But again,
this isn't not a lock. This is ninth inning stuff. Yeah,
so you're getting a little cute in that spot. I
thought they got fortunate. Ramon Loreano made.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Two phenomenal plays in the outfield.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
If he doesn't make one of those plays, honestly, the
Pirates might have scored four or five runs in that inning.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
They scored two, and who knows, the game's different.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
But I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
I think you want King to have the good taste
in his mouth. You went six shot on innings. It's
for nothing. It's probably time to turn things over. Let's
go back to the songs these people want to weigh in.
Let's go to well Dave is online through. Let's go
to David, who I talked to at the break a
moment ago. David drop with Scheffer and sliwa Thanks for calling.
Speaker 14 (27:08):
Him, Yeah, thanks for having me again. Boy feels a
lot different than when I called him Friday after the
first game in Boston. Huh four or five since then?
Starting to figure some things out, you know, they had
they came back, you know, when they lost the lead
Saturday in Boston, came back from now four to zero
on Sunday in Boston, then to two or three against
(27:28):
Pittsburgh when the Pirates were playing pretty well coming in.
So definitely nice to see. The two things I will
say is that one Cassianof has got to be in
this lineup every day because he's been clutching. This is
the guy who is eager to be out of Philadelphia
and knows that he's almost on his last chance. So
I think he's gonna have a good season if you
give him the opportunity. And as far as Michael King goes,
(27:50):
I can understand why people want him done after six,
but I feel like, bor din't you had a third
on Sunday and then Mark heznin Pavada only went five east,
So I feel like maybe Craig felt like we needed
one more inning or try to steal a few more
outs from King because of how much we use the bullpen.
Speaker 7 (28:06):
But I understand both sides of it. Hopefully bask has
just throw the gym tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (28:10):
There you go.
Speaker 14 (28:11):
The problems with Starter's not going deep thanks for taking
my call.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
Appreciate you, David, how just out of curiosity your conversation
with him off air versus on air?
Speaker 2 (28:21):
I like how I liked both good.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
It was great because when he called an issue, I'm like, David,
it's I think I tried to play it off like
I was Brent. I'm like seven sixties, Like is this Shaeffer.
I'm like, yeah, you got you call me? So yeah,
it was good.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
Both of the conversation similar or different.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
No, David sounded like David both both times.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
David was good.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
Eight seven seven seven six seven four seven sixty. We've
got another loyal viewer and listener, Dave, who's back with
us on seven sixty and with us here, I'm Shaeffer
and Slava.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
Thanks for calling in, Dave.
Speaker 10 (28:52):
Well, thanks again guys for giving himbody a chance to
talk about it. It's nice to have that opportunity. So yeah,
I mean, look, winning is better than losing. That's rule
number one. Rule number two. Refer back to rule number one.
I mean, how we got there. No one's going to
remember this in two weeks, so let's take it as
(29:12):
it comes. Be thankful that they made it on a
pretty rough road.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
Trip. It was hold.
Speaker 10 (29:17):
I mean it was darn cold. I wouldn't want to
play baseball in that weather, that's for sure. So hopefully
they can get back here stabilize a little bit. They
need to really get their home feet under them, because
you know, a couple of years ago they didn't do
so well at home. So this is important that they
(29:37):
established themselves as to being able to play in front
of that big crowd and to produce the kind of
results that people expect at home. So let's see how
that goes. Keep your fingers crossed, and let's just move
forward and have fun.
Speaker 5 (29:52):
Dave appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
I love the one hundred and sixty two game grind
because it really is like the wave of emotions are
and this is baseball. I know it is with every sport,
but literally, yesterday you and I are walking out the
studio like, don't lose two or three to Pittsburgh. Today
we're walking in and everybody, the vibe of everybody on
the calls high five and some people and saying, all right, hey,
you know what, that was a good road trip.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
They got built off of it.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
You know, obviously, all you're trying to do is get
to the first month of the season start kind of
falling into May and the June continue to be in
the mix. Can you find yourself four, five, six games
over five hundred, that's obviously the goal.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
They got an opportunity.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Anytime you play the Rockies, you want to try to
take advantage of them, even though last season that wasn't
the case.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Well, see if they can start obviously doing some work
from there.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
And I will say this, the Rockies sixth to win
last year came in May. Guess who else is six
and six Colorado. They just swept the Astros today. So
the Rockies are six and six after not picking up
their six to win until May in twenty twenty five.
One more call uh here on the phones to Marcus,
who's down with us here on Schaeffer and Slave and
(30:58):
Marcus thanks for calling him?
Speaker 7 (30:59):
Man, what's up?
Speaker 14 (31:02):
Honorable?
Speaker 15 (31:03):
Mentioned a Jim out there that hopefully he's staying warm
because it's a nice day here in San Diego.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
But I'll get right to it.
Speaker 7 (31:10):
Man.
Speaker 15 (31:11):
I'm looking at last year on the things that we
really made mistakes on, which was leaving guys on base
and walking, and I don't see that happening so far
this year enough to where I'm worried. I like how
everybody is settling into their positions, knowing who they are
and what their role is this year. I think the
last couple of years there's been so much chaos with
(31:33):
other stuff that I'm sure you guys can allude to,
but I don't see that early on. I like everybody.
Everyone's doing what they're supposed to do. Our bats are
alive and uh and I just I like, I like
what I see, So thank you, guys.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
Appreciate you.
Speaker 7 (31:47):
Man.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
What he liked was the last couple of w's. That's
what he likes.
Speaker 5 (31:49):
Yeah, that's what everyone liked.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
We're fans. It's a random we could do it at
any point. We're fans. Fans of Mike schilt Man.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
That is.
Speaker 7 (32:01):
That was it.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
That's a big, big topic because I might be I
felt like I've always found myself defending the guy, right.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
I always felt like I did.
Speaker 3 (32:14):
But I also also felt the vibe was never the
vibe that I think it should have for a manager
that got you to the postseason two years in a row.
Speaker 5 (32:21):
I think he was polarizing. That is a great question.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Was he a well liked manager that might be going
a little far. I think he was respected because they
he got him to the postseason.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
I'll take respect.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
Yeah, I'm just listening to that call because the call
was saying that, you know, last year, things were all
over the place, and just kind of you know, reading
in between the lines of Look, I think there's going
to be plenty of plenty of times during the season
we're gonna ask why did Craig stand and do this?
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Why did is this guy ready to it?
Speaker 3 (32:50):
Shouldn't he be manning a good team that doesn't have expectations,
that doesn't have a payroll like this, that hasn't made
the postseason two years in a row.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
That conversation is always going to be there. But I've
heard enough from you. I've heard enough, you know, just
enough there. I'm curious if they were fans of him
or they were not.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
I think Craig Stammon has a chance to be more
well liked than Mike Schill, But a lot of it
is contingent on wins and losses, right, But if all
things are.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
Equal personality, he can be more well liked.
Speaker 5 (33:18):
It is equal. I think it could be Craig Salmon.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
But if things aren't equal, I'm not sure if it'll
be Craig Stalmmon or not. We'll hear from the Pajas
first year manager yep on the other side. Plus, we'll
switch gears to SDFC. Getting ready for another match this
weekend here at home. Dax McCarty played in the league.
He covers the league.
Speaker 9 (33:33):
Ago FC lives. He in one place, San Diego Sports
seven sixty America's finest sports station.
Speaker 5 (33:49):
All right, san Diego Sports seven sixty. Dax McCarty, who
covers Major League.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Soccer SDFC back at action this weekend. We'll catch up
with Dax McCarty on SDFC in about twelve minutes at
four pm. This is Schaeffer and Sliwa Padres win earlier today.
Did we even't mentioned that? By the way, We just
kind of got right into it. They did win eight
to two. I think we mentioned it.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
No, we mentioned it right out of the gate, but
we got a little excited with Kevin four and two
and just move on.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
The Rockies are coming up. Yeah, and she came in
and did his work.
Speaker 5 (34:24):
Rockies. You know, this is how I am with college basketball.
No matter who San Diego State.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
Plays, Branas is better than anyone I'll give you a
reason why, Like this is a tough game. I'm be like, ah,
I know they're playing San Diego. Christian broy Man that
point guard for Christian, he could really fill it up.
And that's how it's just who I am like innately,
I'm always concerned about like the worst thing, and I
think I'm like that with the Padres too. I'm like, well,
is it a good time to play the Rockies? They
just swept the Astros.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Yeah, but here's a problem. I think the team has
also kind of given you reasons to be concerned about
certain things. So it's not like they've given you the
utmost confidence to walk around with your chest out and
be like, yeah, I mean everything runs through San Diego, right,
that has something.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
To do with it too.
Speaker 5 (35:08):
Yeah, probably true. So I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
I'll tell you quick two minute funny story.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
What do you got so right before we're about to
start the show, Yeah, ran to somebody from listen. This
all whole place is new to me. I'm still churning
corners like I don't even know what's around here. I
am the iHeart officers are pretty big. So I run
into somebody he goes, uh, good game, tonight against Rockies. Huh,
like now it's coming up tomorrow, right, He goes, well,
they play the Rockies today, Like, no, no, already played.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
Yeah. It was like yeah, ninet thirty, he already won
the game. He's always so they are. It's done, Like
it's done.
Speaker 9 (35:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
And then that was our conversation. He went one way,
I went the other way. I'm my god, that was good.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
Was awkward?
Speaker 2 (35:48):
Uh maybe a little bit, yeah, fifteen percent awkward?
Speaker 3 (35:52):
Yeah, but I just love that he saw a sports
guy and he's like, oh, I'm gonna talk sports with him, right,
and then instantly went to Rockies tonight. I'm like, no,
they don't play five game sets, you know, the Wednesday,
not a fiver Yeah, not a Wednesday to Sundays.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
It's funny you say that about like working in sports
and then in a building that has stations that do
news and sports, and it's funny like some people like
when they try to talk sports with me. As I've
had some very interesting interactions.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
I like them.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
No, no, I like them. It's like, hey, I want
to have that.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Hey have you saw the baseball team? I'm like the Podgers,
Like yeah, pretty neat the Third Town now, I'm like
they have been for sixty years, you know, like you
get everything, you get a little bit of everything down
to the park.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Yeah, I'm like, take a look, it's in downtown Ballpark.
Speaker 5 (36:40):
I'm like it was built twenty five years.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Ago, right in that gas lamp area as I've ever
been to the que I'm like, they knocked it down?
Speaker 5 (36:47):
Oh did they? I used to go there?
Speaker 10 (36:49):
Is that there?
Speaker 2 (36:50):
Anymore? I get out of here?
Speaker 5 (36:51):
Chargers play this weekend?
Speaker 2 (36:52):
I was on the eighth.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
I swear I thought I saw it Chargers playing. They
moved to La Oh did they? All Right, let's hear
from Craig Stammon. Where's this start with Michael King?
Speaker 9 (37:01):
All right?
Speaker 1 (37:01):
On the road trip for the Padres. This is Craig
Stammond post game.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
Yeah, it was a really good road trip. You know,
anytime you can go to the East Coast, two road
trips and come away with a four and two record
winning record on the road, that's a that's a big
time win, big momentum jumper for us. Going back home,
you know, to where we really do play good, you know,
coming in after two tough series against the Tigers and
(37:26):
Giant's not playing our best you know, we played pretty
good and showed some toughness.
Speaker 5 (37:30):
These these trips to Boston and Pittsburgh.
Speaker 7 (37:33):
Pail King seemed to get better. He did.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
What did you see out of him?
Speaker 4 (37:38):
That's the old classic sinkerballer, you know mantre, the more
you pitch, the better.
Speaker 5 (37:42):
Your sinker gets. Yeah, he did.
Speaker 10 (37:44):
He got better.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
You know as the game went on, and we felt
really good at how he finished the sixth to send
him back out for the seventh and cable a couple
of hits, But bullpen came up, came in and did
their job.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Was that your plan that he was going to get
just the two or it just go as long as.
Speaker 4 (37:58):
I was gonna go. You know, if he's gets the
first two guys out and he's facing Horwitz, I was
fine with that. You know, I felt really good with
how he was throwing the ball. But as you know
with with pitching, you you know, they sit back in
the dugout and something happened. The other team feels really
good about what they're hitting, and you know, that's kind
of what happened today. But great job getting him into
the seventh and helping our bullpen and saving our bullpen
(38:19):
a little bit everything. Mason led contact today. What do
you what do you kind of make up with his
this dominant stretch. He eleven straight k's and for him
to do that, and yeah, exactly, I think, you know,
the biggest thing is he got pitching his hometown finally.
Speaker 5 (38:33):
He was pretty pumped up about that.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
I think he saw that with some of the velocity
came out with today, even in a six run ball game.
But uh, you know, we were just sitting there in
the dugout, you know, talking with each other, like what
do you do if you're at the plate? You know,
what's your what's the strategy? Because you can't just sit
and react. He's got too you know, really really really
plus pitches and just it's tough for those guys to
center up. And you know, Mangum is definitely a contact
(38:56):
guy and a guy that doesn't strike out. And he
was able to put the ball in play and maybe
made a great play to end up. It's just a
day for many, Yep, just a day off. Gotta get
the you know, our third baseman needs a few days.
He's getting a little older. He's still a spring chicken.
But I think these days hopefully, you know, add up
in August September and we get the same man we
get the whole season.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
How helpful is it?
Speaker 16 (39:17):
Like when you give him a day off, you have
a guy like and who can impact the game offensively,
and then you're not taking away from first base or
dage because you have casting host and sheets.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
What does that do for the depth?
Speaker 7 (39:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (39:25):
I think that's huge, And I think that's how we,
you know, built the roster with all those guys, with
Brice Johnson and Ty Franz and Nick Castle. Honest is,
when we give those guys that are playing most every
day a day off, we still have a pretty darn
good lineup out there and guys that can do damage.
Speaker 5 (39:38):
And you know, MIGGI had two it oh and then
Craig's damage just fell off a podio.
Speaker 2 (39:46):
Is that how it ends?
Speaker 3 (39:48):
I think sometimes now, Well, it's almost as if we
were asking him questions and we didn't like a question.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
It's like, well, Craig, that's anough.
Speaker 5 (39:55):
I've heard enough from you, like.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
Many a day off already, many, Craig, that's enough.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
I do like the general point of if we sit
them now, yeah, we get the benefits later August in September, specifically,
he said, you get hopefully the best in August and September.
Speaker 5 (40:13):
I hope it's true. This is more from stamon Gan.
Speaker 16 (40:15):
Douar, who can impact the game offensively, and then you're
not taking away from first place or the age because
you have castiansten sheets.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
What does that do for the depth?
Speaker 4 (40:21):
Yeah, I think that's huge And I think that's how we,
you know, built the roster with all those guys, with
Brice Johnson and ty Franz and Nick Castile. Is when
we give those guys that are playing most every day
a day off, we still have a pretty darn good
lineup out there and guys that can do damage. And
you know, Miggi had two hits a day, Cassie had
a big hit.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
You know, it's it's good.
Speaker 5 (40:40):
Those are bats are good.
Speaker 7 (40:41):
Making your corner outfielders. I mean one we know is
yeah Platinum Glover right, Ramone can play, Yeah, Ramone. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
He made two games saving catches.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
Honestly, you know those those changed the game and gave
them not the ability to come back. So you know,
probably the two biggest plays of the game where his
two catches and left field, I think bigger than.
Speaker 16 (41:03):
They seem on the surface. Because they're also like helping
you with some of your bullpend decisions and some things
that need to happen there.
Speaker 5 (41:07):
Yeah, you're exactly right.
Speaker 4 (41:08):
I mean, it's one less batter the pitcher has to face,
and he's out of the inning. There's nobody on base.
You know, if Griffin's ball lands there in that seventh
thing where things are going a little crazy, you know,
that just builds momentum on their side. It kind of
stops the momentum a little bit, allows us to breathe
and make some pitches.
Speaker 7 (41:26):
That was Morgan up.
Speaker 5 (41:27):
There was Morgan up at that point.
Speaker 7 (41:30):
In the seventh.
Speaker 4 (41:32):
Yeah, Strata, Yeah, we had heart and then Astrada getting ready,
so you know we had heart. He got he got
those two big lefties at the top of their order
and got us oute of that any know, was huge.
Speaker 1 (41:41):
I will say one of the differences between Stammin and
Child is Stammon when he speaks, does just sound like
a normal human being, Like there's nothing really he's not
trying to like pull one over you, just answering the question.
It doesn't seem very scripted or like let me spin it.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
He called.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
He said, man, he's getting older, he's noice or he's
still a spring chicken. I mean, Mike Shilt wouldn't be
caught dead using gonna lie like that.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
I'm Anny Machado, is there is this a just kind
of a generational thing you and I were talking about
were prepping and maybe we say it for a little
bit later because I think it's worth a longer conversation.
But I think some of the younger managers, I can
even look at NBA coaches that are younger JJ Reddicks
of the world, their style and their honesty and how
(42:27):
they address the media and probably how they address their
own players and everything else. Pretty big difference than the
way it used to be. I mean, the way we
can go to Mike Shilt, or we could talk about
Bruce Bochi, or we could talk about kind of more
older school managers versus new school in the NBA. JJ
Reddick's going to talk to his guys different than Phil Jackson.
Speaker 1 (42:46):
It's it's different conversation. We'll talk about that in the
four o'clock hour. We'll switch gears to SDFC getting ready
for a match this week and against Minnesota United.
Speaker 5 (42:54):
