Speaker 3 (00:09):
I'm going long with Sammy. That's gonna be exact on
the story of the day. Plus it's warming no lying
from the East set studios of San Diego Sports seventy sixty.
It's Sammy Long.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
What is going on everybody, San Diego, Los Angeles. With
the world. We're gonna Brett. We're gonna claim that we
have a worldwide listeners. I know we have some people
in the Netherlands who listen to Fletch and I, so
we're gonna we're technically worldwide. Welcome back to the the
second week of the show two to three. You heard
Big Voice guy going along with me on Sandygo Sports
(00:47):
seven sixty. Appreciate everybody for tuning in. It's kind of
been hanging with me to the first couple of weeks,
kind of talking everything in the sports calendar. We got
the Masters on today. Pretty good leaderboards so far with
mackilroy and Burns the top. Scott He's hanging around there,
shaw Lee Lowry'd be fun to see as the weekend progresses.
So I had a whole show plan We're gonna go Padrest,
(01:10):
little NBA, which we're still gonna get today. But then
the DOJ decided to investigate the NFL for basically all
the streaming services. If you haven't seen it, the DOJ
per as of an hour ago, opens an anti trust
investigation of the NFL over TV deals. So The Wall
Street Journaler first reported, writing that the quote nature and
(01:33):
scope of the Justice Department's investigation were unknown. They're basically
looking into how the NFL has a bunch of television
contracts and kind of in a weird way, have a
monopoly on just the NFL, on on the fact that
to be an NFL fan and an NFL consumer you
(01:54):
have to pay a lot of money. Now, Fletch and
I got into this hour a little bit. But so
for those aren't familiar, the NFL has obviously games on ESPN, ABC, NBC,
CBS Sports, and those are the games that are going
to be on Sunday Ticket plus ESPN. So it's what
(02:15):
three hundred, four hundred bucks sometimes five hundred for Sunday Ticket.
Then for the Thursday night games, you gotta get into
Amazon Prime. You guys, you gotta pay for that. Then
Netflix now has Christmas and Thanksgiving games, and then Peacock.
Peacock had the has had a playoff game a couple
years in a row. Now, going back to the one
season when the Chiefs played the Dolphins, it was a
(02:35):
frigid game. It was like twenty below zero. Chiefs ended
up winning twenty six to seven. And when I first
look at this, like Fletch and I kind of had
differing takes, and Brent, I'm curious for your thoughts on this.
In a second, I get people being frustrated with the
amount of money they have to shell out for a league.
It's a lot to watch the NFL in its entire entirety.
(02:58):
To watch your favorite team, you gotta spend a decent
amount of money. I mean, you're You're not just this
is not just Hey, you're paying ten bucks a month,
y'or twenty bucks a month for your favorite sports team.
And I know there's the kind of factor of it
can be confusing and especially for maybe an older audience
like Fletch earlier brought up the point about, you know,
his grandpa, like his grandma, his grandpa doesn't want to
work Netflix or ore Peacock or things like that. The
(03:20):
one thing I would say, though, is if people don't
like it, then kind of don't watch. And how many
be that blunt? But the NFL basically can do whatever
it wants because people had I remember when the first
game went on Peacock and it was gonna be Dolphins Chiefs,
and there was this whole week leading up to that
(03:41):
game that wasn't even about the game in and of itself.
People were, I'm not gonna watch. This is ridiculous. They
want me to pay whatever it was twelve dollars for
the month to be watching this game, and then I
believe it averaged about thirty to forty million people, and
so I get people complaining, people complaining by it's all
on Netflix. I don't want to watch these games the
(04:02):
Netflix slate This year on Christmas, five of the six
teams I believe were out of the playoffs, because the
Lions played the Vikings and then the Cowboys played the Commanders,
and both teams were so far of the postseason that
it didn't matter for the playoff picture in an average
forty million people, and in the night game had Denver,
who was trying to jostle for positioning in the AFC
(04:23):
and the Chiefs who were out of it by that point,
and Mahomes wasn't playing their their play a third string quarterback,
and yet people are still watching. So I understand the
frustration with the fact that you have to shell out
a lot of money in the NFL to watch it,
and just the price is going up kind of everywhere
and us as sports fans, I mean you to watch
(04:44):
your favorite team every night in a lot of different sports,
it costs a decent amount of money. I mean, it's
not it ain't cheap anymore. We just turn on the
TV and it's there. But why I don't have a
problem with the NFL being this widespread with this many
different things is because they put the best product out there.
Because in baseball, like I don't know, Texas, text me
(05:05):
seven zero four to seven zero, start your message with team.
I don't know how many people in the regular season,
let's say you're a Potter fan. Are you watching a
Marlins Braves game an entirety in the regular season or
are you watching a Yankees Rangers game in entirety? And
in April and the playoffs, it switches because playoff baseball
(05:27):
becomes a massive thing. I think the NBA is similar
the NBA. I'm a massive Laker fan, but I like
I have I have NBA passed because I do a
thing with Allen's channel, so I have to kind of
stay up to date on all the other teams, and
obviously having this job, I gotta stay up to date
on everything going on. But you know, in an entirety,
I'm I'm a huge NBA fan. In November December, I
(05:49):
don't know that I'm sitting down completely watching a Hawks
Pistons game from start to finish unless I have money
on the game. Whereas the NFL, I'll watch a Panthers
Falcons game. I'm a Chiefs fan. I because for a
multitude of reasons a the NFL is just the greatest
(06:11):
reality show in that it is such on a week
per week basis, there's one game a week. You can
go from being the best team in the NFL to
one of the worst teams in the NFL and a
quick span of time, and one loss has such magnitude.
We talk about with the Padres, I mean every day
it's like, well, you know, they win a game, they
lose a game. Well, it all is the same, and
it's still so early in the season. Although it's our
(06:33):
job to nitpick and kind of get in on the
nitty gritty of the team, it's hard to sit there
and you know, go crazy over a loss or go
crazy over a win because there's so many games baseballs
and Marathon. NBA has the same problem, eighty two games.
They could reduce that. NHL same problem. It's a long season,
whereas the NFL has the perfect balance where every game
(06:55):
really means something and yet it's a large enough season
to where you feel like you're getting a good product.
College football is a little different. They have that same
kind of scarcity that the NFL has. But college football
is the problem that a lot of teams just simply
aren't going to win and make the college football playoff
off the jump, I mean, the college fotball season kicks off.
(07:16):
At best, you could argue there's twenty to thirty teams
that have a shot to win the whole thing. And
that's being friendly. That's being like, because of the playoff expanding,
we're including them in the playoff when really there's probably
a list of about ten college ball playoff college football teams.
We think, hey, they could actually win a national championship.
So back to this about the NFL, I have no
(07:38):
problem paying the freight, even though it is expensive and
it might cost you upwards of eight hundred dollars for
a whole season, because I mean, you look at not
only just all of us have a team, or maybe
you're someone who you were a Charger fan, You're like,
screw them there, They're dead to me. I don't have
a team, except people still watch because of fantasy football.
(07:58):
Because NFL was the first to really really embrace gambling,
was the first sports league to really kind of fall
into that, and they've just done such a great job
of marketing stars where it just feels like there's so
many reasons to watch an NFL game. So I'll pay
the freight for the package, the YouTube TV package, Sunny Ticket.
Whereas to watch Lakers and Pottery games, I just pay
(08:21):
the twenty dollars a month for the Lakers, and I
pay the whatever it is ninety nine dollars to watch
the Potteries. I'm not paying necessarily the MLB package, so
I can watch Braves games or I can watch Pistons games,
But in the NFL, I'll do that because I want
to make sure that I'm kind of in tune with
everything going on, and it just feels like if you're
just watching your team in the NFL, you're kind of
(08:43):
out of touch with what's happening with the rest of
the league because it's such a league with divisions matter tiebreakers,
I mean, and every game has such importance on it
that I get the frustration of people having to pay
the money. But I think if any sports league has
earned the right to try are just a large amount
of money for their product, it is the NFL because basically,
(09:05):
whatever they do, whether they put a game on Peacock,
whether it's on Sunday Ticket or on Sunday Night football,
people are going to watch, and not just some people,
millions and tens of millions people are going to tune in,
whereas it's not the case for everyone else a lot
of other sports. Brent, what do you think on this?
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
I get what they're complaining about, because their chief complaint
is in terms of like blackout dates and that you know,
the NFL has multiple agreements with multiple streaming companies and
multiple broadcasts, you know, networks that all have their own rules,
and they're saying that it's violating it because from what
(09:46):
I'm reading the blackout rules, you know, they're still supposed
to offer the game in your local market, not just
on the stream. But it sounds like, depending on what
network it is, they're hiding stuff behind paywalls when they're
not supposed to, and it seems like that's one of
the things that they want to look into. It's not
so much the money they're being charged, it's they had
(10:08):
some sort of deal worked out that they're supposed to,
you know, air in local market games on your local
affiliate and not just put it behind a paywall or
black it out anymore. So I don't know, it's it's
one of those things where it's they're going to get
into a lot of like litigation and lawyer talk and
(10:30):
stuff like that. It's somewhat similar to what South Park did,
because remember south Park came out and they signed that
big exclusive deal to stream only on HBO Max and
then they signed assignment simultaneous deal with Paramount Plus, and
you know, there's like, how could you do that because
you said that your exclusive home for south Park is HBO,
(10:53):
but then you also signed that if you want to
see new south Park, you gotta get paramount plus. So
I think it's going to run into one of those
that situations where I don't mind that they're looking into it.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yeah, I'm not un much about that. I just it's
kind of as people over the last couple of years,
I think have Again I understand, like it's it's a
lot of money being shelled out there, but it's just
until the NFL has a ratings hit to where they
put a game on Peacock and people don't watch and
(11:24):
they get a third of the audience they normally would,
they're going to keep doing it. And because like I
got a text from Jay Silves here on on YouTube,
I think the sheer amount of baseball games versus how
many NFL games there are per season makes a big
difference regarding a random game in May. Exactly one hundred
percent agree. It's that there's no there's no part of
(11:45):
the NFL season that we'll have the conversation like we
have with baseball or basketball or any of these leagues
where it's like it's early give the time. I mean,
the stats, the stats on teams making the playoffs that
they're starting zero to two are so low in the NFL.
That's why It's like you don't get just a free
month long runway in the NFL to really get kind
(12:08):
of figure things out and get your team together. It
is such a week by week basis that really puts
the importance on the sport. So I'm with you. I mean,
I'm not I'm not ripping into them for for investigating it.
But the whole kind of monopoly talk of the NFL,
you could kind of argue they don't have a monopoly
in that they're going to all these different streaming services.
No one says you have to watch every game. I do.
(12:31):
I like to watch every game because I'm I'm a
massive NFL fan. But me, you could sit there and go, hey,
I'm gonna you know, I got cable and I'm gonna
watch the primetime games and maybe I have Netflix, so
I'll be tuning into the to the Thanksgiving and Christmas games.
And that's completely your prerogative. And I don't want to
tell you how to spend your money, because that's that's,
you know, for everyone else to figure out. But it
(12:52):
is it does feel like the NFL expanding out again
until something happens to where one of the things don't work.
People complain about the amount of overseas games the NFL has,
which is fair like I have no problem with it,
but I also have a little bit of a problem
that they're opening up the season, they're changing the Seahawks
(13:13):
are now I'm gonna start on Wednesday and the Rams
and Niners gonna play on Thursday because they're getting the
game in Australia. But then again, it's like they go
overseas in the game, sell out and they do big
numbers over there, and people are still waking up at
six am here in the States to watch the games.
So until the NFL really does something that doesn't work,
it's just gonna keep happening. So certainly will be a
(13:34):
situation to monitor with the DOJ again investigating the NFL
about opens an anti trust investigation of the NFL over
TV deals. Kind of be fascinating to see how that
plays out in the near future. All Right, we got
the crossover two forty five. We have a very special guest,
the only Jim Russell. We'll be back on the airwaves
(13:55):
at two thirty. Excited to talk to Jim. Haven't talked
to him in a minute. How he's doing out in
Billy gotta get a lowdown on the potters. Coming up next,
we're getting a little NBA as well as a little
college basketball tournament. Expanding what do we make of that
is that the right move is a.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Single call, that it is the automated balls who stretch.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
San Diego Sports, America's finest sports station.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Welcome back to Going Along on Santiago Sports seven to sixty.
Kind of following up on our discussion from the last
segment eight five eight says Edivile. Fans will literally watch
anything because of fantasy football, which is why the person
who invented fantasy football should be in the Hall of Fame.
Very true. I mean it is genius to get a
group of people like fantasy football. I know so many
(14:47):
people who are not diehard NFL fans but watch because
they love fantasy football. It is genius. It's like fantasy
football and gambling have added a whole different element to
add just beyond the hey football diehards. I mean why,
like think historically, why do we love March madness? Like
I was thinking about this because when I fill out
(15:08):
my bracket, I found myself as someone who gambles. But
when I didn't gamble and I was like sixteen, and
I put my bracket in for twenty dollars in a
buy him. It was like I was like living and
dying by my bracket because like this is like my gambling,
Like this is the only way to make money now
with gambling. Like, don't get me wrong, I love filling
out of bracket. Now you're not here sitting you're hearing
(15:28):
me sit here and talk about I don't want to
fill out brackets. I love filling out of bracket, but
I don't really expect my bracket as much because I
can like single handedly bet the games. Tay five eight's point.
Fancy football in gambling has just added such a different
dimension to it. It's also a very easy sport to
not easy sport to win at gambling. It's an easy
sport to diegest gambling, when a team is favored by
(15:52):
three points, you go, okay, well that's a field goal,
Whereas in the NBA it's hard. It's like the point
totals at two point thirty and a half, and I
gotta do the math and try to find on pace
throughout the game, and you know, guys in and out
every night, and major League Baseball you just kind of
worry about sometimes the monotony of the season, our guys
(16:12):
trying as hard on some random Tuesday in June. But
I agree that text NFL fans will will really kind
of gathered around fantasy football and should be in the
Hall of Fame, all right. Going to PRANP brought this
point out. We were talking about break. I forgot to
mention this. We talked about it earlier. The City Connect
jerseys have dropped for the Padres. Shoot us a text
(16:37):
seven zero four to seven zero. Start your message with team,
are you rushing out to buy these things? Because off
the jump, like I look at them, I'm like, oh,
I don't want to crush them. They just look very
plain to me, they're very They look like the Houston Astros.
That It's funny how we went from color rushing in
the NFL and then nowt to City Connect jerseys and
(16:58):
baseball to where we basically just make a team look
like a different team with a brand new set of jerseys.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
At least these still have color, remember the color Rush jerseys.
Eventually we're just like a white helmet, white jersey, white pants.
Is just like you guys forgot to put the color
in the color rush.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
That is true, that is true, but the city can
I I'm curious. I'm curious, who's uh how many people
are rushing out to buy this thing? I just I like,
I'm not gonna buy one, but like, if you want
to buy one, that's fantastic. But it is so funny
that we kind of get this every couple of years,
but people are making a big deal about it. We're
asking our thoughts on the text line. So I thought
I mentioned it all right. This story came out before
(17:36):
we kind of you know, college basketball goes to sleep
here for a little a little while, but it came
out over the weekend and on Monday, we're talking about
the Natty Game and have been able to get to it.
But per Yahoo Sports, the tournament field is expanding from
sixty eight to seventy six here in the near future. Now,
that would have been very important for the Aztecs this
year because the Astexs would have gotten would have gotten
(17:56):
the playoff field. New Mexico would have gotten the playoff field.
Auburn with all their I believe they had fifteen losses,
fourteen losses something like that, but a really great kind
of strength of schedule strength of victory, they would have
all gotten the tournament. I don't have a problem with
March Madness will be fun with an expanded field. It's
not gonna affect March Madness to me because I'll watch
(18:20):
whoever they put out there on March Madness. I mean,
the tournament is such a super fun time of year
and you're getting great matchups, and Hey. The pro to this,
I think would be in the expansion of nil in
the sport where there's really valid concerns about will we
see Cinderellas anymore? Is this because of the amount of
(18:41):
money being shelled out to these rosters? Are are we
gonna get Cinderella runs because they're just that much deeper
and more talented in some of these Cinderella teams. Michigan
had a ten million dollar nil deal, they're playing the
championship game, just won the championship Yukon eight to ten
million dollar nil deal, and they were, you know, playing
(19:01):
for a national national title. So I do think that
adding eight teams does add something to You're gonna get
some bigger time programs in the tournament. San Diego State
would be there, Auburn, and certainly even though San Diego
State didn't play the best against the upper tier competition
this year, san Diego State pulling off an upset or
Auburn or New Mexico programs that have some pretty big
(19:25):
players in them, you know Miles Burge in the portal today,
like there's there's some big players that Santego State had
last year. Might lead to some more competitive matchups because
you're getting more power conferences or at least big time
programs in the field. My problem with this, though, is
just like we were talking about in the last segment,
with the NFL has it right and they play a
(19:47):
certain number of games and it leaves you wanting more.
They own a day of the week. I think every
other sports league. Fans of those leagues have called for
less MLB games, less NBA games, less NHL games. In
college basketball has suffered from the critics. I'm not saying this,
but the critics would say the college basketball regular season
(20:09):
until you get to February is boring. That's what the
ratings have told us over the years November, December and January.
Outside of college basketball die hards, it's not pulling numbers
compared to the NFL, college football, NBA MLB Playoffs or
they guess they missed it in October. But it's not
pulling numbers compared to those things. Because if you're a
(20:29):
fan of Duke, if you're a fan of Kansas North Carolina,
yes there is a once in a blue moon chance
that you end up missing the tournament. We saw it
a few years ago in North Carolina was the preseason
number one. Well, lost in the championship against Kansas, then
miss it the next year. But most of the time,
after a couple of weeks, we know at least you're
going to be in the field. You may drop seed lines,
(20:50):
but you're going to be in the field. Expanding to
seventy six teams. While I think it does make March mad,
it's going to just expand on how fun march Man
is is. We're gonna get some some big time matchups
and some teams on the cut line will benefit from this.
AKA San Diego State, which we're all fans of here,
and it would have been great to see him in
(21:10):
the tournament last year, and they would have been had
this been been enacted. But this does nothing to solve
the college basketball regular season kind of roll of it.
It actually makes it worse because now now it was
seventy six teams making the field to miss the tournament.
I mean, there's some serious question marks about you as
(21:31):
a program. If you can't make the field now with
sixty eight, then you expand to seventy six. And San
Diego State has built up over the last couple of
years some serious credibility with being in the championship. Brian
Dutcher as a consistently great program year in and year out,
and they barely miss it this year. Not many excuses
for San Diego State, but we've known over the last
few seasons that this program has become a you know,
(21:53):
it's been ascending in the college basketball ranks. I just
don't think that sixty eight to seventy six really does
a lot for college basketball, and it actually hurts the
regular season, and I think it tells us something about
the committee thinking, hey, with the expansion of nil, with
Duke spending almost twelve million dollars per year on their team,
how can a firman compete with that? Sienna played him great.
(22:16):
The starters of Sienna ended up beating Duke, but the
problem is Sianna's bench was nowhere near Duke's bench with
players making multiple millions of dollars. So I think it
says a lot about the state of college basketball that
they're expanding the field because I think this trend of
not having a lot of cinderellas is likely going to continue,
and that's why we're seeing the field expand in the
(22:37):
next couple years. All Right, coming up next, Jim Russell,
the man back on the station. He's gonna be talking
to to Brent and I very excited to get to
talk to Jim and update everything. Pottery is what does
he think about the city connects? What does he think
about the team?

Speaker 5 (24:14):
Now.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
I was excited to talk to this guy. He former
co worker of Brent and I was. I texted him
last week. I was like, Jim, you gotta come on
the show. The host of Potter's wrap Up Show you
all know with John Schaeffer, the Great Jim Russell. Jim,
what's up, dude?
Speaker 5 (24:31):
Oh hello, Sammy, how are you doing doing?
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Good man? How you doing I'm good.
Speaker 6 (24:36):
It's a little warmer here now, so I'm not freezing
my butt off, so it's getting better, even though you know,
I still miss San Diego weather.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
I missed the seventy five degrees every day. But we're
getting through it. We're getting through it. Dude.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
The picture you posted, I believe it was a month
or two ago of you in a jacket and you
could only see your eyes because you had like a
ice where you had like a ski mask on. Was fantastic?
Was it was?
Speaker 5 (25:00):
I'm not kidding.
Speaker 6 (25:01):
It was the worst winner in fifty years here in Philadelphia,
so of course the one year that I moved here. Oh,
it's the worst winner in the last fifty years.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
So so yeah, good times, good time.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
Well now you can say you're a real Philadelphian or
what they say out there, but yeah, exactly, you lived
and you lived through it. Jim, thank you for joining
man for real. What's uh? So, what do you make
of the pottery so far? I was listening to the
wrap up show last night. Before we get to serious
pottery questions, I heard you guys talking about the city
connects on the wrap up show. What I'm curious what
(25:35):
your reaction is before I give Brent.
Speaker 6 (25:37):
Nice, Well, the thing was nothing surprised me because as
you saw and everyone else saw the leaks, I believe
a week or two ago, and the way that Eric
Grupner was speaking to the media when asked about the leaks,
we all knew what the jersey was gonna look like.
I think it's a safe City Connect. I think it's
(26:02):
definitely an upgrade over the City Connect one point zero,
just because it's not Neon green and Neon pink in
your face, and it's not gonna be laughed at by
every other fan base around baseball.
Speaker 5 (26:16):
So it's just from that standpoint alone.
Speaker 6 (26:18):
I think it's an upgrade. I think there's things that
are I really like about it. I think the hat
is a great hat. I like the patch. I do
like the colors in a sense that it's not in
your face, but it's also, you know, like anybody could
wear it and you're not being looked at as like
what do you what are you like? Why are you
wearing a giant neon a hoodie or whatever? Right, So
(26:42):
in that sense, I like it. I don't think it's
the greatest thing in the world. I don't think it's
the worst thing in the world. I just think it's
it's safe, and sometimes safe is fine. You don't have
to always be like the most over the top with
your jerseys.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
It's it's just, hey, give.
Speaker 6 (26:56):
Something that I think the fans are gonna like, and
I think a lot of people are going to wear them,
and I think that it's not going to be viewed
as by other fan bases as the worst thing ever.
Like I think City Connect one point zero was the
only thing I do not like about the jerseys is
I didn't realize it was it was like a shirt,
Like I didn't realize there's.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
Buttons on it.
Speaker 6 (27:18):
And that was the one thing about it that I
don't like, because a baseball jersey you need buttons. I mean,
come on, we need some buttons on my jersey like that.
That's just like how I want to see my baseball jersey.
But at the same time, it's not like in your face.
You kind of have to look at it kind of
hard to realize it's a shirt and not a real jersey.
(27:39):
But hey, it is what it is. It's fine, it's safe.
It's not the worst thing in the world. It's not
the best thing in the world. I think it's going
to sell a lot of jerseys, and overall it's fine.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
That's that's a great point. It's it's as long as
you avoid dpr hit of everyone, every other fan base,
clouding the jersey, you're pretty good. I'm curious what you
thought were you're thinking so far though, so of Craig
Stammon as a manager because small sample size, it's it's
kind of hard to crush me either way. Some questionable
bullpen decisions, but like just watching his interviews, watching him postgame,
(28:11):
what did you make to him with you know, running
the team?
Speaker 5 (28:15):
Fine.
Speaker 6 (28:16):
I think the first week you could kind of see
that things were moving a little quick for him. I think,
you know, the two and four home stand to start
the year of two and five, first lost, first game
in Boston, I think that the game was moving a
little fast for him in the manager seat. But they
had a great road trip after their loss to Boston
(28:37):
last Friday and coming home six and six. I think
things are stabilized right now, and overall for him, there
are some things he's got to work on, Like you said,
bullpen management, that's going to be a work in progress,
especially with the new manager, even though he used to
be a reliever.
Speaker 5 (28:53):
In the game.
Speaker 6 (28:53):
I still think that it's going to take him some
time to really you know hone, you know his bullpen
man skills in. But overall, I think he's done a
fine job. And one thing that I did notice that
I give him props for is we're in the second
week of the year and man Mitchada has already had
(29:13):
one off day. And last year that didn't happen. So
I think game one thirty five because Mike Shilt was
scared to go to Manny and give him an off
day because we all know Many runs that clubhouse. Manny
runs that organization. So to have Craig Stammon tell Manny
this early in the year, hey Man, we're giving you
an off day, and Many accepting that and actually happening,
(29:37):
I think that's a win in a notch under Craig
Stalmon's belt that he actually got Manny to sit early
on in the year.
Speaker 5 (29:44):
And I think that's going to help him in the
long term.
Speaker 6 (29:47):
Because Many does not. You know, he can't play every day.
He needs to have rest because he's getting older, and
to play every day, we're going to see a worn
out Manny at the end of the year and this
team can't have that. So Craig Stammon doing that, I
think it's good. I think so far, so good with Craig,
and it's nice that they had a really good road
(30:08):
trip and hopefully they can play some better baseball at home.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
That's a great point about that, because when I remember
when Craig Stammon got announced and Machado and Tatis and
all these guys were kind of singing their praises, it
was like great, But at the same time, it's can
kind of concern. When J. J. Reddick got hirghed with
the Lakers, can they tell these guys the stars like
the stuff that needs to be said, like taking an
off day. I totally agree with you. What do you
(30:30):
make it? What do you make in the rotation? So far?
So you know, Bueler not the first star was okay,
second start kind of got ate up. Marquez was great
the other day against the Pirates. Do you think that
Waldron coming in, Like, do you think he'll replace one
of those guys as we kind of wait on the
return of Joe Musgrove.
Speaker 6 (30:46):
I think the rotation for the entire year unless aj
Preller makes a significant upgrade is always going to be
just a you know, walk in a type rope type
of thing. I think Michael King to start the year
has looked good. I'm not going to to say he's
looked great because he's walking a lot of guys and
he kind of seems like he's getting tired as he
gets to the sixth inning. Nick Deavetta has definitely looked
(31:09):
really good after his first bat outing of the Yar
and opening day walker Bueler. His time might be numbered
here in Padre's uniform if he continues to pitch the
way he's pitching. Small sample size, but still every time
he goes out there, he's pitching for a roster spot.
Same thing with Herman Marqueads. Every time he goes out there,
he's pitching for a roster spot. Randy Vasquez has been
(31:30):
a pleasant surprise being becoming essentially the ace of the
staff to start the season. It's just gonna be a
work in progress. It's not the strength of the team
by any means, and the fact that we might not
see Joe for a long time kind of doesn't really
surprise me. But it's also a blow to the rotation
because you kind of thought that Joe was gonna be
(31:52):
there to start the year, just under more supervision because
of his injury. I just think that they're gonna have
to piece things together for at least the first half
of the year until we get to the trade deadline,
when then aj Pellar couldn't make a move. But as
of right now, they've held their own. They've had their ups,
they've had their downs. But if Michael King and Nick
Poveticon stabilize and you know, stay healthy and pitch the
(32:15):
way that we know that they can pitch. You know,
this team won ninety games last year with two reliable starters.
They if they can have two reliable starters right now,
and then you throw in Randy Vasquez, who has been
a bright spot to start the year, you know, piecing
together back in the rotation. It's not the worst thing
in the world. Most teams are doing that in the
first place anyway, because no one has a strong five
man rotation in baseball. So all in all, I think
(32:38):
the rotation has been fine to start the year.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
Jim Russell joining me today on going long, What do
you make of the power the lack thereof for the
Potter's bats, Tati's hitting one ninety six right now, it
was there obviously ranked bottom tier last year, one of
the worst in baseball. I kind of thought heading into
the year they would just kind of regress back to
the mean positively, and that there was there's a lot
of power hitters on this team. But are you are
(33:02):
you nervous after the first couple weeks or not hitting
for power or do you think again, it's small sample size.
Speaker 6 (33:07):
That's the biggest concern for me for the first couple
of weeks of the year. Now again you could say
small sample size, but when you look at the roster
and you say, all right, this guy's gonna this guy's
got to hit this, this guy's gotta hit this, this
guy's got.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
To hit this.
Speaker 6 (33:20):
I mean, the power issue last year was the biggest
problem with this team. And they cannot afford to go
through another one hundred and sixty two game year like
they did last year with such low power numbers. If
they expect it can really truly compete for a World Series,
it just can't happen. You're not gonna win a World
Series if you can't hit for any power. And so
(33:40):
the fact that we started start this year once again
with questions about Fernando Tatis Junior, who started out his year,
you know, very sluggish and very slow.
Speaker 5 (33:52):
You know.
Speaker 6 (33:53):
It's just it's going to be a constant talking point
with this team, the lack of power and truthful and
less Fernando Tatis Junior turns into eighty five or ninety
percent of what he was in twenty twenty one power
wise of the plate. It's just going to be an
issue with the team going out to the rest of
(34:13):
the year, and I don't know how they fix it
other than guys just have to be better with their
power numbers.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
So Ben Fletcher has been telling me about how the
Mike Evans signing is leading to a San Francisco forty
nine Ers Super Bowl. I'm curious, what where are we
at with the Evans coming to the team, Kenneth Walker
going away from the Seahawks. McDuffie now with the Rams,
how are you are you realistic about your Niners? Are
you like Ben, You're going all in for the Super
Bowl this year?
Speaker 6 (34:39):
Look, I think realistically it's safe to say that they're
probably not going to trail in any game this upcoming season.
So with that being said, yeah, I think the perfect
season is on the table. It's just a matter of
if they really want to do that or not, and
if they really want to have that perfect year.
Speaker 5 (34:59):
But yeah, it means perfect gears out there.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
I think it's I think it's there for the taking
and the fact that you know, there's a really good
chance that they might not trail in any game because
they picked up a thirty four year old wide receiver
in Mike Evans. Look, I'm I'm very optimistic about this
game going on.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Uh do you? I will give your boys some credit.
I talk a lot of crap about the Niners, but
I do think Mike Evans given pretty a jump all
threat is a big deal, and that division has gotten worse. Like,
I think there's a there's certainly a real opportunity in
the NFC. I'm curious you and your wife. You know,
she's obviously a massive Eagles fan. Now you're living in Philly,
I assume you're still repping the the Niner gear everywhere.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
Not everywhere I go.
Speaker 6 (35:42):
I mean there's some places that I can't go wearing
Niners gear because I mean, you talk about like die
hard football city, Philadelphia is a die hard football city,
and if you're wearing any colors besides Eagle Green.
Speaker 5 (35:54):
It's a little bit of a problem.
Speaker 6 (35:55):
And of course they played in the playoffs last year
and we watched it at separate houses.
Speaker 5 (35:59):
So okay, we're still we're still married. Everything's good. The
relicious tips so good.
Speaker 6 (36:04):
We didn't get divorced yet, so look, everything's fine. I
just have to pick and choose my spots here for
where I go in town, if I decide to wear
any Niners gear or not.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Jim, you're the best, dudes. Great hearing your voice. Man,
go you all you all know, but go tune in
subscribe to the wrap Up Show. I believe there. You
guys are what like ninety away from ten thousand subscribers.
Speaker 6 (36:25):
Yeah, we've been ninety away from ten thousand debscribers for
the last seven years. Okay, ninety people, go, yeah, go
subscribe to the wrap Up Show.
Speaker 5 (36:33):
Just get to ten k it's only been nine months.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
All right, Jam, you're the best man. We'll talk soon,
all right, let him in, all right? Coming up next.
That was Jim Russell. Great getting here his voice. Coming
up next, we have the crossover. Let's see if Alan
Sleewood decides to diss me again today and come in late.
That's the big pressing topic. I see John Shaffer out here,
I said.
Speaker 3 (36:53):
Oh, Sen Diego Sports seven sixty Hi Hard Radio State
Guaranteed Human.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
Welcome back, going long santy Go Sports seven sixty live
on the iHeartRadio app. We got Lakers basketball tonight on
Santego Sports seven sixty when they take on the Warriors.
Pregame coverage begins at six forty five with the tip
at seven pm. We were speculating in the last segment,
we know John Shaffer would be on time, ready to
come for the crossover. Would Allen Slee will be here
(37:30):
and he is here, Lo and behold hit the.
Speaker 7 (37:33):
Mic, I'm on there is Yeah, you keep it off too,
because sometimes I want to make sure that even if
it's off, you can still hear me.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
John, I will fight through it. We can kind of
hear you.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
I'll fight through it. I'll fight you. Came up on
our show today in what regard people. Rich maguire, loyal
listener was concerned, What you know, I know your wife
and your son went to the game last night. The game, yes,
and you guys told me not to bet the Clippers,
and I did bet their brother.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
Why don't you listen to us?
Speaker 1 (38:01):
Why don't you listen to because the bet had already
been placed and I wasn't getting good.
Speaker 7 (38:05):
Here's what I want to know. If you're gonna do this,
what's it called long shots?
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Long shots? Twelve forty five every day.
Speaker 7 (38:09):
Twelve forty five long shots? Who you are trying to
give out advice to people? And I'm sure you're very
successful in this side business.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
Side hust very successful camera.
Speaker 7 (38:17):
With that in mind, what made you think Clippers are
going to cover against the thunder?
Speaker 1 (38:22):
Do you know why?
Speaker 4 (38:22):
And Schaefer were yelled at you yesterday. We're telling you.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
You know why Johnny's young guns.
Speaker 4 (38:27):
They don't listen. Man, listen.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
You gotta find an edge in Vegas. You can't just
bet Oklahoma City.
Speaker 8 (38:32):
Here's the edge they can clinch the west of the
win over the Clippers.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
They had everybody playing everyone.
Speaker 7 (38:38):
And the Clippers were missing Darius Garland and James Harden
who got traded.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
That was not known at the time of the bet.
Darius Garland that was a late scratch, so I didn't
know that at the time of the bet. Again, when you.
Speaker 4 (38:50):
Win that, it wouldn't have changed for you.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
You would have still gone with the clep.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
You were so confident yesterday and like, what was the
guy doing?
Speaker 1 (38:56):
And then I look at the score yesterday it's eighteen
or something. I know when it comes to gambling is
when you're right, it's because you know more than other people.
When you lose, it's because of external circumstances you cannot control.
Speaker 7 (39:07):
Wait say that, say the beginning part of that when
you gamble, But you said our model, who's our like.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
All our listeners, everyone who rides with long shots every
day twelve forty five. Again, when you win because you
know more and are more intelligent, when you lose external factors.
Speaker 7 (39:24):
Let me ask you this one. This one tonight, you
just mentioned Lakers are playing the Warriors. Steph Curry is out.
We don't know, I don't think. I don't think we
know if Marcus Smart's going. But basically there's a lot
of guys out. You said Lakers are still or no,
you said the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
Are still to and a half point dogs with Steph out,
Not that I bet the under tonight. I bet the
under tonight. In the game, it's like the game with you.
He wants to win. Yeah, no, because the Warriors don't
have a lot to play for.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
The Lakers still need to win.
Speaker 1 (39:52):
Lakers still need to win, but not that I don't know,
DeAndre can't catch the ball. Like J. J. Reddick said,
did your wife and son of a one time game?
Speaker 4 (40:01):
I had a great time. They did.
Speaker 8 (40:03):
The highlights for my seven year old were they drop
hot dogs from the sky and into a dome.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
They literally do.
Speaker 7 (40:09):
It's not a real story, like either your son is
lying at age seven or you're lying one of the day.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
Really do. You can find it on social media.
Speaker 8 (40:18):
They put them on parachutes from like the rafters or
the new video board that's like the one that's so five,
but like all the way around like a whole wrapping
video board, and they drop hot dogs and then also
from your seated into a dome, which is perfect for
seven year olds. Every seat has like a joystick or
some type of like contraption where you're like playing.
Speaker 4 (40:36):
Video games against the like video board.
Speaker 8 (40:39):
What yeah, so he said, there are two different games
they played in in the arena.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
Isn't the wait, isn't there a thing at that arena
that you can if you're like cheering, really loud at
that arena and at the wall or whatever. They will
bring you, like free beer, free drinks, you get like
I read about this and.
Speaker 4 (40:57):
They bring him free beer. I know that. I asked,
and he had two Michelo vultras. He was really loud, Yes,
he was really life.
Speaker 8 (41:06):
Was telling me he really wanted one of these hot dogs.
He's never had a hot dog in his life. We're vegetarians.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
Did he go to just thought it was cool?
Speaker 4 (41:12):
It was freaking out.
Speaker 1 (41:13):
So now you got it. You guys are eating.
Speaker 4 (41:15):
I gotta see the video.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
I gotta see the video.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
Okay, okay, I'll get you some video.
Speaker 1 (41:19):
I'm gonna get I'm gonna.
Speaker 7 (41:20):
Get their next home game on Friday, they're doing Indian food.
They're actually dropping Indian food like that. Yeah, they're doing
that's smart tendor Chicken. It's it's a big promotion. Yeah,
in the bathroom. But they have a big promotion going
on Friday. Oh hell had the idea of dropping hot dogs.
We're talking about it.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
I don't know. I mean that, uh is it? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (41:43):
The Lakers have.
Speaker 8 (41:43):
Seventeen titles, but but you drop hot dogs with this guy?
Speaker 4 (41:48):
I was I don't see any banners for hot dogs.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
I was clam chowder on Sunday. I was soaked. What
if they what if they did that? First? Its who
they're playing in Boston's like that they didn't want chowder.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
I like that.
Speaker 4 (42:02):
Yeah, it's pizza at home.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
That's good, that's great. But I don't want your son
to have to go through a lifetime. I was saying
this on the earlier of pain being a Clipper fan.
So I think you wanted to do I think you
know he needs to become a Laker fan. No, that's
where it's too too easy to switch. Too easy at
this point.
Speaker 7 (42:21):
I think if you're if you've been in for a while,
you just stay in. If you don't want to feel pain,
let me tell you where he should go. I'm gonna
tell you where he should go. Kings was jump on
the thunderband wagon underfan.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
Literally the mom is already a thunder fan. No, what
do you guys got going up on the show today?
We have a busy show, and will join us from
the ut. She just wrote about Randy Vasquez. Write article,
really good article, So she'll join us at five pm.
Jayden Denegal, San Diego State starting quarterback back for year
two will join us at five thirty. Ryan Harrington, managing
editor of Golf Digest, will join us because there's a
(42:58):
big golf tournament. There's something it's called the Mass. That's right.
Speaker 7 (43:01):
I do have my clubs. I genuinely have my clubs
sitting in the trunk for about a solid year and
a half or so. Why I don't know, but they're there.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (43:10):
Are you good?
Speaker 4 (43:11):
What would very what would you shoot at Augusta? What's like?
Speaker 1 (43:15):
Where where are we said? With the wings? You said
with the winds?
Speaker 7 (43:19):
So like what Gotti type numbers or what mile per
hour is the winds?
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Because that will tell you. That will kind of on
the cart you got.
Speaker 8 (43:27):
Yeah, Well, like Rory was five unders, so would you
be like four under?
Speaker 4 (43:31):
I would be like eight hundred and eighty seven over.
Speaker 1 (43:34):
Over yeah, yeah, yeah, Rory up at the top of
the mass right now. My pod yesterday it was you
forget that you picked here they picked Rory. Wow, But
that was based
Speaker 7 (43:46):
There, say it's based off of nothing, right, I gotta
get out of here.
