Speaker 1 (00:00):
For and Sliwa Sean Schaeffer.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
When you think about the city of San Diego, some
of the worst ownership groups, with the Clippers situation, with
the Chargers situation, even the Padres ownership history, has it
always been smoothed?
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Sellen she Diego Zone, Alan Sleeva.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
I felt like we went to a stage at baseball
where everything was so predetermined.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Why even have a management? What's the point having out
o here? Schaeffer and Sliwa, all right.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
San Diego in southern California, what's going on our two?
Shaffer and Sliwa San Diego Sports seven sixty live on
the iHeartRadio app. It is day one at Augusta. The
twenty twenty six Masters well underway. Great to reconnect with
Ryan Harrington, managing editor at Golf Digests. Back with us
here on San Diego Sports seven sixty. Ryan appreciates taking
(00:43):
some time for us. I just want to start with
the round that Rory McElroy put together obviously a year ago,
completes the career Grand Slam, and now here today shoots
five hundred part in the opening round. Now that he's
won that for a first time at Augusta, what does
that mean for him moving forward.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
I think it definitely frees him up. You know, it's interesting,
I think after the win last April, everyone just kind
of presumed that the huge burden would be off his shoulders,
that he'd be able to win majors on a regular
basis after having gone for such a long draft without
winning them. But he realized that he still had to
come to grips with really everything that had happened and
the change in his life and now figure out a
(01:23):
new focus for his life, and the rest of the
summer actually was kind of bumpy for him. The Ryder
Cup was I think a little bit of a turning point.
Obviously had the horrible experience the crowds there, but the
win really motivated him again, and I think the offseason
he was able to kind of really accept what happened
and now move on. And so this week he sounded
so relaxed in his press conferences, enjoyed the opportunity to
(01:44):
get here and be the defending champion and be the
host of the champions dinner and whatnot. And then it
translated again onto the golf course today with that sixty seven.
I mean, he looked very, very comfortable out there, just
kind of cruised around on the front line and then
made three straight birdies on the back and now here
he is and the potential too obviously be a back
to back champion. It was pretty impressed about Bob.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
I know for every golfer it's different, but just use
the Rory piece as an example. You got somebody that finally,
I'm sure, like you mentioned, he's got an opportunity to
be so much more relaxed now in these majors, and
obviously the success that he had last year at the Masters,
how much of that is somebody that we're not even
(02:24):
talking about. The ability to be in a situation where
you're in the Masters and nobody's talking about you versus
somebody that's won it before. I'm just kind of trying
to the pressure of golf. Is there do a lot
of these players talk about when there's no pressure on
them versus all the pressure in the world.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
How thin is that margin for some of these golfers.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Well, what's interesting here is is, obviously there are plenty
of people who come to this event who aren't necessarily
picked as favorites or whatnot, and they are kind of
under the radar. But this event has so much mistiqued.
It has so much build up for it that every
player on the tee on the first he is going
to be nervous when they tee off there that this
is the Masters, this is a lifelong dream for many
(03:10):
of them. There's twenty two first time players in the
tournament for instance this year, so you know, from that standpoint,
there's pressure on everybody, so to speak. It's just a
different degrees and it's different ways of processing it. So
past champions and somebody like Rory McRoy who has got
the experience of winning here, obviously the pressure is a
little bit different because they've already done it. They know
that they can do it, they're confident that they can.
(03:31):
Whereas these other players right now, for instance, you know,
as Xander Schoffley has played so well the tournament San
Diego's own, you know, he's one two majors, so he
knows he can win majors. But there's still probably a
small mental hurdle about this place and trying to get
through that, and so it brings its own kind of pressure.
So I think everybody feels it a little bit. Here
is just all to different degrees.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Really good perspective again, Ryan Harrington Golf dies just with
us right now on San Diego Sports seven sixty. Yeah,
Xander has finished as high as time for second at
the Masters. Of course, he has two majors, the PGA.
He's got an Open championship as well. What about Scotty Scheffler,
He's obviously one at Augusta before. I think he might
still be out there in the eighteenth right now to
under par. If you're Scotti Scheffler and you've won here before,
(04:13):
you got to be feeling pretty good being within a
couple of shots of the lead after day one, right.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Absolutely, you know, and I agree with you from the
standpoint of here's a guy who you know, just he
and as family just welcome the birth of their second son,
so he's a new dad again. He's been going through
all that. He hasn't played in a couple of weeks
because of that, So there's a little bit of russ
And you know, Scotti Scheffler is still the world number
one for a very legitimate reason. He's got a great
(04:39):
game going, but this year there have been a few
tiny cracks in that swing and whatnot. So I think
getting out here and posting a good score to start
with was a big deal for him. He'd had a
little bit of trouble at the start of the for
rounds of some of these tournaments last two weeks, so
good start for him. I think, like we said, guy
who feels very comfortable out on this golf course, who
knows what he needs to do to win on it,
(05:01):
and he knows that. You know, you can't panic the
first few days here. You just got to play well,
make the birdies when you can, and make sure you're
in position to go forward. On Sunday.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
We are joined here by Ryan Harrington, managing at our
Golf Digest on the Schaefer and Sleeves show. Right, I'm curious,
are there a name or two some guys that were
not talking about that maybe isn't getting They're not getting
all the attention. They're not the sexy names of Scheffler
and Rory and that you would keep an eye out
for this tournament.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
Well, you know what was an interesting one for me
and coming into the week was justin Rose. You know,
a guy who last year had such an incredible final round,
how sixty six came back tied. Rory, you know, lost
in the playoff, and I think if it wasn't Rory
McElroy there, most of the crowd would have been pulling
for Rose. He's forty five, hasn't won this major before,
(05:52):
but he's come so close. They'd lost in a playoff before,
and they had been a second place finished in another year.
So I think here was a guy who comes in
and again, yeah, that question about pressure, I don't know
if he feels pressure, but there's only so many more
opportunities he's going to have to win at this and
you know, this is his twenty first start in this tournament,
and I think it's a tournament that he feels like
he should have could have won in the past. And
(06:13):
so he, you know, comes out today. He actually got
it under to four under part at one point in
bogie his last two holes. So I'm sure he's kicking
himself a little bit. But there's a guy who I
think a lot of people are rooting for this week.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, no doubt about it. How does it look shaping
up in terms of the conditions, Say what the wind
was obviously a factor. What are the conditions look like
moving forward?
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Yeah, it's interesting because the scores were relatively speaking low.
I mean, you've had sixty sevens out there leading the tournament,
but actually the overall stroke average is going to be
about a stroke higher than last year's first round, and
to your point, it was a little bit winning out there.
This golf course, though, is playing really firm and really
fasta and I know that can be a cliche in golf,
but it's a big deal this week because for the
(06:54):
first time in a long time, there's been no real
significant rain earlier in the week, and there's no rain
forecast few days. So this golf course is going to
be getting only more difficult as the wind picks up,
drives it out a little bit more, as the sun
comes out. It's going to get war more over the
weekend too.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
I think the.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Worst of day might be as low as you're going
to see all week here. And I do think it's
going to become a pretty, you know, big challenge. These
greens are already fast, these greens are already difficult from
an undulation standpoint, and they're only going to get more
so as the next few days come around. So I'm
envisioning that this could be a lot more difficult tests
than they've faced here the last few years.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Rob, what'd you make of Obviously this is a side
story here, but what did you make of these last
couple of weeks Tiger Woods stepping away from the game,
obviously trying to take care of himself personally, and also
maybe just what's the conversation around Tiger at Augusta.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
You know, I think that's it. I think everybody feels
like Tiger needs to make sure that he's taking care
of himself before anything else at this I mean, obviously
he wanted to try to see if he could come
back and play in the Masters this year, he played
on that TGL event just before the accident and whatnot.
But I think golf is definitely secondary in most people's
minds here. They all wish Tiger well. They all hope
(08:12):
that he can, you know, recover from what's going on
with him personally and get back to a situation where
he can, you know, just kind of live a little
bit more of a normal life. You know, I don't
think anyone really cares if he's playing golf again or whatnot.
They just want to make sure that he's healthy and
he gets into a situation, you know, he's he's taken
on some leadership roles with the PGA, Tours the head
of their future Competitions Committee, and you know that there's
(08:35):
a big change coming about here on the PGA Tour
and he's helping try to institute that. But for the
time being, obviously he stepped away from it. And I
you know, I think a lot of people would like
to see him get healthy again and be able to
return to that capacity even before playing. So a lot
of people just said I think by the news and
hoping that he gets the help that he needs.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Ran I want to say I've asked you this before.
Ryan Harriton, managing editor Golf Dies with us right now,
but since you're on in San Diego, I wanted to
ask you about Toy because obviously Toy is just speaking
to Tiger. You have one of the most iconic moments
in modern golf history at Tory Pines. Then you had
a recent US Open, but now all the US Opens
are accounted for for like thirty years. You would know
it better than I do. And then even PGA championships
(09:15):
I think are locked up for ten plus years. Does
Tory have a spot in the future of major golf
in America or non?
Speaker 4 (09:23):
I think it's a big question mark. And you spell
that out very well. You know, the USJA has taken
on this idea of having some specific anchor sites and
really locking in on certain venues that they were going
to come to back multiple times if nothing else, to
create an infrastructure at those places so that they can
you know, kind of have the championships that they want
(09:44):
at some of these facilities, and unfortunately that squeezes out
a place like a Tory Pines. And so we've got
a lot of really really good golf courses who I
think in the past have been able to get into
the so called ROTA and some of these championships. The
PGA Championship isn't extended out as far. I think the
idea of West Coast primetime major championship is a big
deal to some of these organizations, and so I think
(10:06):
the PJA of America would smartly be looking at Tory
as a potential host. But you're right, the calendar is
selled up for the foreseeable future for a lot of
these and so I think unfortunately at place like that
is going to looking on the outside for the time being.
We'll see what happens. But it's a shame because obviously
there were some pretty interesting fireworks there when it's hosted
(10:28):
both of its US opens.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah, it's had some amazing leaderboards historically, right Tory Pines,
And yeah, I'm looking at the PGA. I'm just looking
at the website right now. Every PGA Championship through twenty
thirty five is book and I think they've awarded even
some beyond that as well. We'll see what the future
of Tory Pines is when it comes to major golf. Ryan,
appreciate your perspective. Thanks for ropping on. Thank you the
next couple of days, and thanks for doing it.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
Hey, it's my pleasure to take care guys.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Great stuff from Ryan Harrington at Golf Dies. Isn't that
interesting Tory Pines. One of the most iconic moments in
golf history is Tiger Woods at the eighteenth forcing a
Monday playoff that he wins in two thousand and eight.
They then had another event pushed back a year because
the pandemic in twenty twenty one Open Championship. Great week,
and now they're on the outside looking in. The future
(11:13):
US opens schedule is like thirty years booked and now
the future PHA Championship is booked for ten plus artists.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
But it's all the same. They're all the same location rotating.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
I mean more so US Open where it's rotating through.
I don't know, we'd have to look, but some of
these iconic courses in the country, they're getting them every fifth, seventh,
ninth year as opposed to every like fifteenth year, so
where there used to be more spots to rotate it.
It's not like five or six courses getting every US Open,
not fifteen or sixteen course.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Am I missing missing something?
Speaker 3 (11:46):
It's because to not have or to not have Quory
Pines that, you know, iconic, one of the best golf
courses in the world.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
How is that not in the mix? And listen, there's
a reason for it.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
I don't know what the reason is, but that seems
like if you ask many of these golfers, hey, where
do you want to be in the country, A lot
of them going to say San Diego, California, and a
lot of them going to say Tory Pines. Listen, they're
they're already playing in some of the most beautiful properties
in the world, so maybe that doesn't mean anything to them.
It's like everywhere they go they just see a country
(12:20):
club in an ocean. Maybe it doesn't mean as much,
but that that's I wish I understood that.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
The problem is Pebble Beach, for example, has it every
five years moving forward, where they used to get every
ten or we'll give you one. Pinehurst has it every
five years. They used to get every ten. Oakmont in
Pittsburgh again, it used to be every tenth year, now
is every sixth year.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
No, everyone wants to be in everyone in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Everyone.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
I mean, it makes the this week, that makes a
ton of sense to get out to Pittsburgh over Tory
Pines in San Diego, California.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Now I get that that one makes sense.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Here's the thing. I don't know enough about golf. Someone
can can correct me on this. Yeah, but how like
La Country Club as US open in twenty thirty nine
and Tory Pines has none moving forward. I don't understand
the dynamic there because Tory Pines again has produced these
epic epic No La.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
I mean that area is just really just getting there
is easy and it's so beautiful and yeah, it's just
it's an easy drive.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
It's so simple, all right.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
On the other side, I don't sound bitter or anything
exactly exactly.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
I mean again, it's just like we talked about sports
in San Diego. I know you love to Tory Pines
included in a major.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
Listen, listen.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
I'll say this that there's going to be a reason
for it, and the question is going to be and
I don't know the answer to this.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
I really don't.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
And I don't there's probably so much politics involved when
they are or maybe it's just strictly financial. I have
no idea, but it seems like if you want something
in sports in today's world, you got to move heaven
and earth to make it happen, right because if you don't,
somebody else will. So I'm just going to use the
Pittsburgh whatever course that was. Who knows if they moved
(13:59):
heaven to earth. Who knows if LA was like, we'll
do whatever we can to have this. And if you're
not in that mix of saying we will find a
way to make it happen, then somebody else is gonna
go get it. So how much of that is on
the city, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
All Right, we'll get to the wrap coming up at
four thirty. We've got a four pack of tickets to
sestinate place to give away and Anthony Davis speaks on
the trade. What trade, the trade where he went to
the Wizards, the Anthony Davis trade, that Luca trade.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Okay, because the ad got traded.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Remember after twenty nine solid games in Dallas, he got
traded again.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
No, he speaks on the trade that he was a
part of for Luca back a couple of seasons ago.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
In a point to go after Luca on both ends,
San Diego Sports.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
America is find his sports.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Station niafer and SLAUA San Diego Sports seven for the
ut looking forward to having Annie back on the show.
She's been writing about Randy Vasquez and she'll share some
of that for you coming up at five pm live
from Petco Park where she is, and then at five
(15:10):
point thirty, looking forward to connecting with Jaden Denegal, he
is San Diego State's starting quarterback back for a second year.
On the MESA. Actually caught up with Shawn Lewis earlier
today for something I was doing on on YouTube. No
big deal, Yeah, no big deal, just catching up with
Sean Lewis.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
What did you do this afternoon? Yeah, went to Ralphs.
That's cool. I just was with Sean Lewis.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Nobody I played ateen with him on the South Course
of Tory obviously, right, so kidding, but I was with
Sean Lewis and he made the interesting observation that he
has not had a quarterback back in his system since
twenty twenty one and he's the play caller, so as
the play caller. Now he's got the same quarterback back
for a second year. And I'm excited to see and
I think Astek fans are excited to see what I
(15:51):
could mean for the Aztecs offense. We're gonna hear from
Anthony Davis in a moment. He has spoken out for
a first time publicly on the trade, the Luca trade.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
I'm sure he's you know, talked about the trade.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
But like spoke extensively on it, maybe, yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
And he's doing a podcast with Draymond Green. This is
one of his buddies. This is you know, one of
the beauties with having podcasts out these long forms, you
really can get in depth in a conversation.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
Right.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
So yesterday you kind of started seeing some of the
release of this interview that he had with Draymond and
they're addressing arguably one of the worst trades in NBA history.
What I would question is is it the worst trade
in all sports?
Speaker 1 (16:35):
One of the worst. No, Listen, there's been a lot
of terrible trades.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Can you give me one that's comparable?
Speaker 1 (16:39):
In my bay Ruth.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Modern NBA?
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Bay Ruth didn't play power forward for the Jazz.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
I couldn't believe the Lakers move. It was a terrible move.
By the way, the Baby Rute trade is awful. The
red sex zodal for cash. Give me a break.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Okay, Actually, you know what, I think I got one?
Speaker 6 (16:57):
Okay for modern NBA. Yeah, modern NBA other than Luca.
Are we gonna look Shack Shaye? Wouldn't Shade technically be worse,
way worse right now as we sit here, as we
sit here today, isn't it way worse?
Speaker 2 (17:14):
He's got? He's on the version Paul George is getting.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Paul George didn't end up, you know, obviously staying in
Los Angeles with the Clippers, ended up signing with the
Philadelphia seventy six ers.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
But where is he now? In a milk carton? Where
is Paul George? I know where is he?
Speaker 3 (17:30):
I think he had a ped situation, so I think
he was suspended for just a solid twenty twenty five games,
No big deal.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Has he been back?
Speaker 3 (17:38):
I think he's back. They're so irrelevant, That's what I'm saying.
But anyways, you were asking for an example. Maybe that's
the example. So he starts telling the story and we're
gonna play the clip because he's trying to explain his
side of the story.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
Checked out like I hear you, but I'm not listening
right and hang up. And my chef is right there
in front of me, and I'm like, I just got
traded to the Maths. He started laughing big dat. So
I'm like, you know what, I know it's true. I
go I go X and go straight to Sham's page.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Nothing.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
Yeah, they playing. So I'm walking out the kitchen, turn
the corner to go up the stairs. Joel and b
cost me. He called me four maye, he and Philly
twelve o'clock. I don't answer going upstairs. Then somebody else
(18:41):
called me another player, and I'm like, wait, hold on.
So I go back to Shan's page and then there
it is breaking news Dallas Mavericks trade. Luka, doncas you know,
and I'm like a run upstairs. Maybe I just got
traded to Dallas. Shut up. But now this time, I'm like,
(19:06):
I'm not shaking, but I'm like like, it's like my
heart is in my stomach, and like, yo, what the
just happened?
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Right?
Speaker 7 (19:15):
And I show her and she's like what the hell of?
But now I'm like all right, I'm running back outside
and the first I call it my pop like, yo, Pa,
I just got traded. Man, shut up.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
He's looking.
Speaker 7 (19:24):
He can't find that. As soon as he was. Soon
as I'm like, ro swear to god, it pop up
on the ESPN, like and then my phone start blowing up.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
It's pretty fascinating, Okay, he says, the story leading into it,
Like I like that story because that's ad.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
Nothing is registering.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
If you were shocked Luca got traded to the Lakers,
if I was shocked, if Brent was shocked, imagine Anthony
Davis getting the call. He doesn't believe it because he's like,
why would Dallas trade.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Yeah for me?
Speaker 3 (19:58):
The way he explained it is he's on the phone
with Rich Paul and Rich Paul says, You've been traded
to Dallas and he's like what, Like, who are they
going to trade Luca? Like obviously they're not trading Luca
for me, He's like, yes, Luca.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Like why that's what I would say.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Then Nico Harrison, who is a legend alne GM. I
guess he calls Anthony Davis and says, I told you
I was gonna come get you. I told you, And
he's like, what are you? What is everybody talking about it?
I guess he told him the story too. He didn't
answer a call from Rob Polenka eventually, but just fascinating
because for over a year everyone has talked about where
(20:40):
you were players. You know, they're showing players on the
sideline when the news is breaking. Kevin Duran is like,
you know, hold it like everyone was shocked. Here's ad
telling his version.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
One of my biggest memories of it is your reaction
to it. You were doing a YouTube show, was it postgame?
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Because here's what happened. Lakers played the Knicks that night.
He he didn't play that game. Lakers won that game and
they were rolling there playing some good basketball. I got
my YouTube show that I do, so I'm doing the
I'm doing the postgame show and I'm live and I'm
when I tell you, I'm like wrapping it up, like
we're done for the postgame, and I get a tweet
(21:15):
that comes in or not a tweet. I get somebody
in the comments on YouTube that says, hey, have you
seen Shams's his Twitter? And so while I'm doing the show,
I take a look and I'm like, yeah, I'm I said,
I'm like, I'm not going to report.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
On this, like obviously it's not happening.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
And then there's like this waiting game where I'm like, wait,
do I stay on my live stream or do I not?
Speaker 1 (21:39):
And then I ended up going three hours that night
because of that.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
We're up against it. But how many people have watched
that stream or watched it live that night as it
was playing out? Any idea I want to know on
the other side, how many people watch that stream. We'll
get to the rap on the other side, because that
is a transcendent basketball moment, the luk of trade to
the Lakers. We'll get to the rap coming up. We've
got a pack of tickets to give away.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
To set the potential saving is very so to turns
conditions and availability.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
All State North American Insurance Company and Affiliates north BROOKLINOWAI.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
So the following program wire prerecorded San Diego Sports No.
Speaker 8 (22:16):
The sport is sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and
the Padres are getting set to start a four game
series with the Rockies down at Peco Park tonight. It's
gonna be Jimmy Hurgat going for the Rockies and Randy
Vasquez going for the Padres. First pitch is set for
six forty inb New seventy six Ers d're all Embiid
underwent emergency surgery for pendicitis today in Houston. He was
(22:41):
diagnosed with the pendicitis a few hours before the team
was set.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
To face the Rockets.
Speaker 8 (22:45):
No timetable has been set for his return, and we
have Lakers basketball tonight on San Diego Sports seven to
sixty when they take on the Warriors. Prekim coverage will

For victims of drunk and drunk driving, your grief is unique,
but you're not alone.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
You always have a place at MAD.
Speaker 8 (23:01):
It called the twenty four hour Victim Helpline at eight
seven seven Mad Help, or visit mad dot org.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Allright.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
San Diego Sports seven sixty coming up later in the hour,
will give away a four pack of tickets to Satiny
placed Annie Holburn from pet Go. She'll join us at
five pm. Jake Deniaglastick starting quarterback with Join us Live
at five thirty.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
I think I got the number about seventy thousands.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Oh yeah, I already forgot. I'm like a goldfish, like, hey,
how are you man? Yeah, about seventy seventy thousand views
on your Life the Knight that Luca got.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Not all live, but definitely just the view of Yeah,
it's big news.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
That's a big number.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
It's big news.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
It was a huge story. Yeah, what would it take
the top that championship?
Speaker 5 (23:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (23:57):
Yeah, And I actually I don't think Actually what it's
so random? YouTube is so random? Yeah, Marcus Smart signed
with the Lakers in the summer on a buyout from
the Memphis Grizzlies, and that was like twenty five thousand views,
And why is that twenty five?
Speaker 1 (24:11):
That doesn't make any said. But my point is is.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
That like the algorithm, you can't Yeah, you can't predict
any of that stuff. There's stuff that you do and
I'm sure you do the same where I'm like, oh,
that's going to do really good.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
I'm like, what one hundred percent? There's one eleven views
on this. There's one video we did on seven sixty,
specifically on the YouTube era where I think I cut
this segment. It was us talking about San Diego State
signing a quarterback that Sean Lewis had previously previously committed
to Colorado, but when Sean Lewis came here, he committed
(24:41):
over San Diego State, and that did something like twenty
five thousand views. We're like, WHOA, I never we had
never done anything like that. Honestly for the channel we
were using, that was that's probably remains the most viewed
video in channel history about Danny O'Neill, who followed Sewn
Lewis to San Diego State. He then went to Wisconsin
and he was only here on the Mason for one year.
(25:02):
But I never expected that.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
Do you know how many views the sports radio station
when Sconsin got when he went over there.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
I think I don't think they got twenty five And
I think they probably not brancrew up a Badger fan.
I can guarantee it did not. Yeah, I think you're
probably right.
Speaker 1 (25:20):
That is that is so weird.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
But there's no math to it.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
I don't understand.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
All right, let's get to this.
Speaker 5 (25:26):
There's a good time for the Wrap presented by some
Brero Mexican food.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
Check out their website. It's some breromeex dot com.
Speaker 8 (25:35):
Well, Scotty Scheffler, rival Tiger, what's your career majors?
Speaker 1 (25:39):
All right? So what's he at right now?
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Is he at five? Let me look it up.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
I think he's at five.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
I think he's got five.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
The Tiger is.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
He's got four. He's got four, two majors, the two masters, one,
PGA one Open Championship. Tiger's got more than four.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
Yeah, Tiger's in the what is he? Well, thirteen something
like that.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
We should notice now, I think it's more than that.
Come off frand fifteen need this, So Scott, he's got four,
Tiger is fifteen happened close and happening.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
Yeah, that's why it's so like, Yeah, it's hard watching
Tiger ten twelve years ago when a lot of that
conversation where you just thought it was a foregone conclusion.
I just find it so difficult to believe. I mean,
imagine if he ended up with eight majors. That's unbelievable.
Eight majors. I don't think he's getting to anywherehere.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
Tigers.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Yeah, I would say, right, double digits is incredibly he'd
be one of like three golfers ever with double digits.
I believe so. Yeah, I mean fifteen seems like a
very high barred across. I will say, he's an incredible
golfer and he's only twenty nine. It's only twenty nine,
So another ten year run, you win one a year.
Let me think about that ten year run, you win
one a year, maybe he could get close to Tiger,
(26:54):
But again I agree with you, he's on the outside
looking again. Next question, I.
Speaker 8 (26:58):
Can't believe it's taken almost two weeks. Is this a
must win series for the Padres.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Definitely not a must win, but because you can go
two and two against the Rockies, and as much as
you'd be disappointed with that, it did nothing right.
Speaker 1 (27:12):
You're eight and eight. Nobody's nobody's losing their job.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
We're not coming in here and asking for a change
in managerial position, but it would be It's kind of
similar to what we talked about earlier, John, when when
the season started you were disappointed in the start. That's it, like,
that's the only thing that I would talk about. We
were two and four, We knew the season was going
to be wasn't over. You knew there wasn't gonna be
You knew there was going to be an overreaction, but
you were disappointed in how the pod race played. If
(27:37):
they go two and two against the Colorado Rockies, you'll
be disappointed in a two and two. Now you're sitting
here at home, you'd be four and six so far
on your home stand.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
I have a very reliable source that says if they
don't win the series, the team will not be sold kidding,
So it's.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
We're getting close. We're getting close to that.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
The terms of the sales say must take three or
four or more from the Rockies April ninth through.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
That's in the contract where.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
The terms of the three point five billion dollars Sailer
off or Bill is a very important series. Because of that, No, Joe.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
Lakeup will not he's not buying, he's refusing to buy it.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
It's not a must win series. The homestand I would say,
after going to and four, I don't want to see
a losing home stand against Colorado and Seattle. That's just
disappointing to me. If they go three and four in
this homestand, because then they're five and eight at home,
it's not a great start playing for the large crowds.
Of course, it's not the.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
City connected on Friday nights now and we'll screw this up.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
I want to see a winning home stand. I think
four and three is very realistic for Colorado and Seattle
at home. I want to see a winning home stand.
Speaker 8 (28:40):
Next question, are you guys taking the Thunder or the
Field to win the NBA Finals?
Speaker 1 (28:44):
Thunder or the field? Fields had a nice year?
Speaker 7 (28:48):
Right?
Speaker 3 (28:49):
When you ask that, like when I ask myself that question,
I don't think I hesitate.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
I think I think I take Thunder.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Just like that. I feel the same way, by the way.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
I mean, listen, Boston's got a shot at winning a chip.
They've done it before. San Antonio, I just don't know yet.
I don't know what san Antonio.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
I know they're really good, and I know they played
really well against the Thunder during the regular season, but
they've Wemby's never been in the playoffs, right, A lot
of these young guys that they have have never been
in the postseason before.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
Don't you have some hesitation there? Here's what I was saying,
can you really be the Spurs? And at twenty two
with Wenby win a championship?
Speaker 2 (29:28):
You can but it seems it seems unlikely.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
You win it this year watching it, I mean.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
Like it's gonna win six. Okay, here's what I would say.
What was it Moses Malone that said faux faux fo? Right,
that's not gonna be the thunder. But they'll do it
in less games than they did it a year ago
because they played those seven games series.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
They'll be much They should be more press too.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Yeah, like a couple of five game series wins. Maybe
they win one and six, but I'd be surprised if
they have multiple series go seven games based on the
way they're playing right now.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
Okay, see, also got a little lucky because by the
Lakers falling apart and getting all their injuries.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
Yeah, Denver moved up to number three. Who's won ten
games in a row?
Speaker 2 (30:09):
So who's four or five right now?
Speaker 3 (30:10):
So it's gonna be Denver san Antonio in round two, right,
and they would get the winner of Houston and the
Lakers in round one. But that's better for okay see,
OKAC would much rather face these two teams than go
up against Denver. They want Denver in San Antonio go
to a long series.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
James, Absolutely, that's a good point final question.
Speaker 8 (30:29):
Which is the worst city connecting uniform that was unveiled today?
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Have you seen the others?
Speaker 1 (30:34):
How I was gonna say, I don't really seen money
in the other one.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
You see if I can just I mean, there's a
grade here on ESPN dot com. I mean, so this
is like here, for example, there's Baltimore, Okay, trasty bype everyone,
there's Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
I'll say Pittsburgh because I don't think it's a different
it's not great.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Oh here they are here, there are one shot Okay,
but like Texas says Tejas for example, got you? The
ruers say, whisk Us is that.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Red's in the middle there? Since it's just it's not
it's not unique enough.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
We've got the Royals, which I think is bizarre. Baltimore's
b more, Atlanta's old school, They're all like that.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
No, I'm okay with that.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Pirates as a piraty theme. Of course, we have San Diego.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
I'll goors just because it's it's it's not unique at all.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
I'll give a hold on real quick and then breaking
way in. I will say this because I was texting
with someone about this earlier. I don't like Kansas City's
it's so blended, all white uniform with this R with
a crown on top.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
I think it's I.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
Think it's bizarre, truthfully. So you say Reds, I say Royals, Brent,
what do you say, I think the worst.
Speaker 8 (31:38):
It's a tie between the Reds and the Pirates in
the Reds have red pants.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
Yes, I don't.
Speaker 8 (31:42):
I don't like the all one color all of a sudden,
like a coms are like that too, and I hate it.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Answer I'm glad the Padres did to me. It's kind
of like Church League softball. I don't need navy pants
with navy tops.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
It's a lucky separate, a little bit separated.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
My favorite was the Brewers ones, the one that says
whisk go's my favorite. It's pretty neat. It's pretty neat.
They're hit or miss, I would say historically, honestly, there
have been some good ones, and there have been some
ones that I'm like, this is horrific.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
I used to if somebody used to tell me, you
used to ask me questions like and this is more
more recent now, right, yeah, code Back in the day,
it's like, all right, you got the eight jersey, then
you got the twenty four jersey. Lebron went through a
stage where he's not only changing his actual jersey because
he's going on different teams. Right, he goes twenty three six,
all that stuff, and there is something iconic about Michael
(32:35):
Jordan and that twenty three right, just the twenty three.
Now he did go eventually went to Washington and forty
five at one point rock in forty five. But like
all of this, if you think there's a uniqueness to it,
it's not. It's just, hey, can you buy another jersey
just to make can you go buy another jersey over there?
Speaker 1 (32:53):
You guys sick of this one? Why don't we do these?
Speaker 3 (32:56):
We'll do these on Sundays, We'll do those on Fridays.
We'll do this at But if they look good, I
mean I will say something there. There is there is
a I give credit because I think there are franchises
out there that have made They've made their jersey or
their hat or their colors or anything.
Speaker 1 (33:12):
They made it like fashionable. If that makes sense.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
Oh yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
And now it's not just you know, somebody who's a
diehard Padre fan rocking it. You might have your your wife,
your girlfriend, or a buddy that's wearing it. It never
watches a game like it is. It's it's fashionable.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Yeah, completely agree. All right, Well, give away a family
four pack of tickets to sess me Place on the

(34:17):
me placed between now and six pm. As well. We
haven't really touched on the Padres lineup tonight. The Glaring
Omission is one of their top performers to start the year.
In Ramon Loreano, it's my guy, Your guy is out now.
We were just kind of off the cuff, like, well,
why So I went to padres dot com, which is
the Padres website.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
That's where you can get some information about like.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
The Padres scores and stats.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Yep, merch in the colors match Also, it's all up.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
It's all up there. So I click on preview and
then I click on matchups. And I was wondering, like,
as Loriano had any history against this dude whatever his
name is for the Rockies Hrget, I don't even know
how to say. His name is Herget. Well, he's oh
for eight lifetime against Herget. So is it just a
matchup situation? I haven't heard from Craig Salmon, who probably
has actually spoken to the media this afternoon, but I
(35:07):
wonder if it's a matchup. I'm with you. I ride
hot hands. Yeah, that's how I feel in baseball. I'm
riding hot hands. I don't care if this oh freight
against Hergert or Herget or whatever his name is. That's
not a reason alone for him not to be in
the lineup for me.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
And also we saw what he did, I mean specifically
that final game against Pittsburgh. His defense is great and right,
or his defense is great and left and nobody's nobody's.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Saying that he's Bryce Harper.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
I mean, I'm not saying that his bat is that good,
but compared to some of these other Padre bats, he's been,
you know, a nice consistent player. They put Cronin Worth
to lead off, so it's Corona Worth, Tatis Jackson, Merrill, Machado, Xander,
Gavin Sheets, Castianos France is in there.
Speaker 1 (35:56):
And then for me, by the way, the lineup's not bad.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
I actually think I don't know how you feel about this,
but I do feel like there's a lot more depth
to that lineup than last season. I don't know how
to take this. You got a team that's six and
six and really your stars haven't done anything yet. Is
that a positive thing or is that kind of concern
(36:18):
you again? Does that mean well, once those bats start going,
then the Padre has got a great chance of, you know,
going on a little bit of a run. I don't
know what it means, but not having Loriano in the lineup,
I understand the mathematical statistical part.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
I just would rather have him in the game.
Speaker 8 (36:38):
The reason you don't know who Jimmy Hurgett is. He's
a bulltime guy. He's only okay, three career start. Yeah,
he's only had three career starts and he hasn't had
one since twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
All right, so he might not be Yeah, so that's
actually more of a reason to have Loreano in the
lineup because he might not be long for the game.
Is what Brent is saying to your point about is
it a good sign or a bad sign? Here's what
I would say this home stand, this offense needs to
show us way more than they showed us last homestand right,
you're playing Colorado for four games. You gotta show us
(37:13):
more than what you've shown us to this point. Again,
it's not like this is the series that Fernando Tatis
Junior needs to three home runs, But like, don't be scared, guys.
To have a couple of good, good games in a
row on offenses is what I would say. You're gonna
play in front of forty five thousand people, it's gonna be
nice tonight. I don't know about this weekend. I think
there's actually some weather this weekend, but like it's the
Colorado Rockies at home. This is a series. You need
(37:35):
to fare better than you did in your first homestand.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
Give them some credit because I think when they left
Pacco two and four, we're very critical.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Right, I said, seasons over.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
They answered the call and went four and two in
those six games, So give them credit there. But this is,
you know, obviously an opportunity kind of gained some momentum.
Meal it's crazy batting averages right now. You mentioned Tatis
one ninety eight, right, yeah, one ninety eight, Corona Worth
one seventy one, Jackson Merrill two hundred, Machado two six.
(38:05):
Xander looks like a Hall of Famer for the Padres,
specifically at two twenty nine and then Castianos at.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Two sixty one.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Is he's been solid.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
He has been you know, obviously he's not playing every day.
We're talking about that a little bit yesterday. Maybe that
plays to his advantage. But yeah, listen, there is a
little bit of pressure here on the Padres to go
handle business against the Rockies.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
But you got I'm excited.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
About tonight and when Annie comes on at five, she'll
be able to kind of give us a little bit
more in depth story about Randy Vasquez. He started to
build some real momentum and I don't know how you
feel about this. But now every time Randy Vasquez is
on the mound, there's some growing confidence of like, all right,
you know, Sandygo's got a good shot in this game.
(38:49):
If that's your third best starter with Pavetta and Michael King,
you gotta feel good about that. Hopefully he's the kind
of sets the tone, sets the table for the Padres
in the three games against the Rockies. But I will
go back to something you said at the end of
the day, you got to get those bats and especially
those names, got to start showing up do it against
the Rockies and start kind of changing some of that
(39:10):
vibe as well.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
I almost like everyone would prefer they win the series
to like the individual success, Like you probably take three
out of four with them scoring nine combined runs as
opposed to two and two scoring nineteen runs ectually three
and one scoring the nine runs as supposed to two
and two with the nineteen. Sure, but I think there
is a case to be made for showing signs of
life on offense even if you don't win the game.
(39:31):
I mean, nobody wants to see Randy Vasquez struggle or
something play out with your bullpen. But if you score
six or seven runs, against the Rockies and happen to
lose a game.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
I just want to see more from the lineup collectively
individually as well. I mean, Fernando Tatis Junior still homerless
through to.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
Me, it's more individually because they've put up runs. They've
had some games and they put up runs. Not that
it's the cleanest, not that they're hitting. You know, it's
not like their their slug is unbelievable. It's actually kind
of playing out almost identical to what least we believe.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
But the difference between them and some of.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
These other teams that could hit home runs, it's such
a I mean, there's such a disparity, right Like, if.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
I look right now team stats, it's so early I
would say that, but like just the indicators in baseball,
I'll just use on base plus slugging OPS the number
one indicator of offensive success in baseball. The Padres are
twenty seventh in the sport. I mean, twelve games are
six and six, So maybe we should feel good about
them being six and six based off twenty seventh in
(40:32):
on base percentage plus slugging percentage. They were way better
than that last year. Yeah, and we complained about their
offense against twelve games. That could a four game series
against Colorado with twenty eight runs scored and he could
jump up to twelve to fifteen. Yeah, so I'm not
going all in there. Same thing with Tatis. So I
like the fact that he's done nothing and has no
home runs in twelve games. I don't, But I don't
(40:52):
think today is the moment to be like, what's the deal?
But there'll be a moment where I look up thirty
one games in if he's hit one home run and
be like, what's the deal?
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Well, I think people are already doing it even twelve games,
So if you're thirty thirty one in, obviously that's a
much different conversation.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
Yeah, the stars got it.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
We said this before, and this is obviously going to
be a consistent theme. And I don't know how many
times you said this. The Podreys go, how man he goes,
The Podways go, how tough. There's a few players on
here that it's like, this is supposed to be a
no brainer.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
We need to be.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
Bitching and complaining about other guys right right, not them.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
I completely agree.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
That there are a lot of our energy needs to
go to well you know, why did you bring this
guy in? Or how come Gavin Sheets isn't the same
type of player was cast once?
Speaker 1 (41:38):
I mean, it's there's no risk in that.
Speaker 3 (41:40):
But I'm saying that if a lot of our energy
continues to go towards the stars, how do you put
together a good season?
Speaker 1 (41:48):
How do you put together a successful season? I don't
think you can.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
So we're all just kind of waiting here saying to ourselves, well,
they're going to turn it around, and they will.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
I it's not And this happens all the time baseball.
By the way, I'll be critical for example of a player.
Let's say say Manny Machado, like, you know, you've been
struggling for a month straight, and then I'll have a
week where he hits two home runs and be like,
see John, like I told you so, well, yeah, over
one sixty two. They all have to produce. That's the prerequisite.
You're no world where you can't produce over one sixty two.
Speaker 3 (42:17):
But you know what you could say to those that
say see John, yeah, say that. You know, if it
wasn't for your pep talk behind a mic, it wouldn't happen.
Machado's not doing what he did exactly, and then you
could say this is how leaders lead.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
I I was the reason why, I'm the reason why
a big.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
And then you could also say, like you're very it's
not about you, but you were the reason why.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
I was the reason why. That's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (42:43):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
Ani Houburn, friend of the show, friend of the station,
writing about Randy Vasquez. Sh'll join us on the other show. Story,
really good story frum pet Go Park. Really interesting his
background and how he came up and now to become,
you know, one of the faces of the rotation. Right
now for the padres, Anny Velaskas, I'm all over the place.
Annie Halberd will join us. Coming up in five minutes.
(43:06):
Jayden Denegal will join a San Diego State's quarterback at
five thirty. I don't think Dave Alaskas, who is thinking
about San Diego State's assistant coach. I believe he's not
gonna
