Speaker 1 (00:00):
They're probably saving a Carloto cash right now, So what
are you waiting for?
Speaker 2 (00:03):
You check all State first for a quote today. You're
in good hands with all State. It's Schaefer and Sliwah,
Sean Schaeffer.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
I think we've said repeatedly in one former fashion, I
think the general consensus is a six and six facing
guys like Schoolble and Skiens and Frambourg, Valdez whom ever else.
I think you signed up for that, and that was
at the start of the year. Here they are coming
home six and six overall San Diego Zone, Alan Sleiewah.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
The team has also kind of given you reasons to
be concerned about certain things, So it's not like they've
given you the topmost confidence to walk around with your
chests out and be like, yeah, everything runs through San Diego.
Now by from the East set Studios of San Diego
Sports seven sixty and Sliwa.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Alright file hour the All News Shaeffer and Sliwa San
Diego Sports seven sixty Great to Reconnect. Annie Auburn is
a dear, dear friend of the station and mine, and
I would say a friend of the show, even though
it's her first first time technically on this show. So
Annie Halburn from the UT back with us on seven
sixty from Petco Park, and Annie, we appreciate you doing
(01:08):
it for us here today.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
How are you.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
I'm great, It's great to be on with you both.
Congress on the new show. And yes, I feel like
I'm very honored to be on with the two of you. Now.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yeah, I feel like I'm like putting you guys together.
Look on an email like, Hey, Alan, meet Annie. It
works the UT Hey Annie means subject is intro introduction intro.
So want he very nice to meet you. Have read
your work and have listened to you for a while,
so great.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
To meet you.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
Well, I appreciate that. Very nice to meet you as well.
I feel like we're like giving the audience a fun
little introduction here and listen. John was very good to me,
especially over these last few months, letting me sit in
with him, so I appreciate Everything's everything John has done,
so you know, you got to take good care of him.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
There you go on.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
I owe Annie, she was helping out a ton over
the last few months. You know what, Annie, whatever city
connect Jersey you want, maybe I'll buy for you from
Dhgate for fifteen dollars.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
You don't have that kind of money. Yeah, you don't
have that kind of I need to buy it. None
of us do.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
He also said, maybe maybe I get it from her.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
And let's let's talk you obviously at Petco Padres back
home taking on the Rockies. I think a lot of
people enjoyed what you wrote today in your conversation about
Randy Vasquez, who's back in the mount tonight for San Diego.
What did you find most insightful when you sat down
with him.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
Yeah, just that, you know, like we don't know a
lot of his story, and it turns out that this
guy was a catcher. He didn't sign at sixteen when
most people out of the Dominican do sign, and by
nineteen you're pretty old. I mean, you're not getting a
lot of looks. So his time was expiring. But he
played baseball, street baseball, you know, and that's just kind
of with a bottle cap and the broomstick essentially, And
(02:48):
he taught himself how to pitch, Yes, wild he taught
himself how to pitch and how to get the kind
of spin on the ball that he has now by
using this bottle cap and throwing it and it was
called the Tia. This this game that they play in
the Dominican in the streets of the Dominican and he
just happened to, you know, get a scout from the
Yankees that was interested in him and told other American
(03:08):
scouts about him. And it turned out that he was
able to sign eventually with the Yankees. But the scout
giving him a month, you know, gave him a month. Hey,
if you can get ninety two ninety three on a fastball,
will sign you right there on the spot. But this
this is the guy who would never thrown or pitched
or had no idea what to do, you know. But
so you see what I think is interesting with Randy
Vasquez is you see it on the mountain with him.
(03:30):
Now you see the raw talent that he has and
that he has had over the last few years, and
that's literally raw talent from the streets of the Dominican
and then he's just been able to refine it. So
here's a lot of upside for him with you know,
Rubin Dieble and the staff working with him. But it's
really just formed in this street baseball that he played
in the Dominican Republic.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
And what do you think some of that potential is
I mean, like you said, I love the word you
used about raw raw talent. And now all of a sudden,
we're trying to look at Randy Vasquez. And this didn't
start just yesterday. You could look at spring training, you
could look at late last year. But just I guess
what level can Randy You've Asquez take his game, and
(04:11):
obviously the better he gets, the more important it is
for the padres.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
Yeah, I think that he is someone who, you know,
we don't have. I don't know what his potential might be,
but I think that he's someone who buys into the plan.
So what impressed me about Randy is he came into
spring training last year, he was out of shape, he
didn't really have a good program, and it kind of
kicked his butt. And so when the coaches started working
with him on becoming a better pitcher, someone who's got
(04:38):
to take more responsibility for his game and more responsibility
for his health and the way that he shows up
to the field every day, that's really when he started
to turn around. And I feel like you've got when
you've got that in a guy, you've got high upside
and someone who really cares about the improving. You know,
he worked with Ruban Diable, he worked with the pitching staff,
but then he took it upon himself to work even
more with you Darvish and see to really follow and
(05:01):
whatever U Darvish was telling him to do, and that
helps him take his game to the next level. He
put it into practice over this off season. He showed
up this spring a lot better off than he did
last spring. And I think that's kind of what you're
looking at in terms of a guy who, you know,
like we just said, has all this raw talent but
didn't really know how to put it together, and now
he's learning how to put it together, and so this
(05:21):
could rode well for him going forward. It is kind
of interesting that he's, you know, got the only two
quality starts on the staff to start the season, and well,
who knows how that'll shake out at the end of
the year. But I think when you look at his
progression from even last year to this year, there's a
lot of potential for promise, right and for what could
this guy be. I don't know if I'll ever be
(05:42):
like an elite, top of the rotation guy, but who knows.
If he keeps working and he continues to get guys
out now by strikeout and not just by ground ball
like he had been doing, or by traffic and then
getting out of the jam. You know, maybe maybe there's
a lot more potential in there for him that we
even know of.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Love the insight and the perspective.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Andy Halbrin from the UT with us right now on
San Diego Sports seven sixty and Schaeffer and Slawa. We've
touched on this six and six start.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
What do you make of it? Again?
Speaker 1 (06:07):
They've faced some really good pitching, the offense hasn't been great,
but they are six and six overall.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
So how do you look at the first twelve games
of the year.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
Yes, definitely not an ideal start to the year. I mean,
definitely not how you would want to start the year.
But I do think they redeem themselves on this road
trip at least somewhat right to get themselves back to
five hundred, and that's really where you want to be.
Who it's it's fine, it's fine to be at five
hundred right now. You just don't want to be slipping
too much farther in the first month of the season.
And now it's on them right, like, don't I don't
(06:36):
look at this Rockies team and say, hey, this Rockies
team is just, you know, a piece of cake, like
it has been every year. They've been playing pretty well,
the Rockies, and they've been there at the same record.
Now that the Padres are in, you know, they've been
beating some good teams. So I think you've got to
come back to San Diego. And I know Craig Stamon said,
we've played well in San Diego. Well, these fans haven't
seen it yet. It's in the twenty twenty six season,
(06:57):
so you've got to keep that momentum from the road
trip going and at least keep yourself bobbing around that
five hundred mark, if not better get yourself into a
little bit of a winning record if you can. But
in terms of just the hitting, I feel like there
is some truth to the fact that their offense, you know,
as long as they maintain their approach that they should
be okay. But we still haven't seen some of these
(07:18):
guys fire up right, like Bernanda, Touchy Junior, or some
of these other guys like even Manny. You know, we
haven't seen them quite get going yet. So I think
that once they are able to hopefully get this lineup going,
you know, maybe not fully, but at least like three
fourths of the lineup going at once. You can see
probably start to see how dangerous it could be, and
(07:38):
the and the rotation. I'm not completely sold on. I've
got to see more starts. I think it was good
to see what happened in this last road trip. I
think it was good to see Herman marquees with a
good start. But he has been historically in the past
good good in Pittsburgh, for whatever that's worth, right, So
I think you've just got to see some more consistency
from these guys to kind of start to feel like
you can exhale, take a little bit more of a breath,
(08:00):
and like they're in a decent spot.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Yeah, we kind of got sold a little bit, and
we'll see what happens. But was he tipping his pitches
and now and gets a good start in Pittsburgh. Obviously
people get optimistic about that any relative to where we
are in the season, Like everyone keeps mentioning it's just
twelve games in. Does his home stand feel like it's
an important one? You got seven games here, You obviously
(08:23):
got off two and four start at home, you cleaned
up some things on the road, but just how critical
it is. Of course, there's always going to be a
buzz at Peco Park, City Connect Jerseys are out, there's
going to be a great just a great as it is,
great energy and a great vibe at the stadium.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
How important do you think these next seven are?
Speaker 5 (08:45):
Well, your former host there Jim would call this a
must win homestand I don't think it's bad. I don't
think it's that. I don't think it's a must went
home fan. I think that they do have to take
care of business. And I think, you know, going back
to what Nick Cassiano said at the beginning season. This
guy's a veteran and he's been around a long time,
and he said, look, we've got to start by beating
(09:06):
the teams that were supposed to beat. And of course,
you guys know in baseball that's never given. You're gonna
have nights where you don't beat the teams you're supposed
to beat, and then you do fall to teams that
are quote unquote lesser than you or below five hundred
or whatever. But I do think you've got to look
at this Rockies team and I think you've got to
take the series for sure, you know. I think that
you got to look at your roster and say we've
got World Series aspirations. You got to go out there
(09:28):
and you got to take the series. Seattle. They have
not been playing well. I think, you know, you probably
need to take care of business against them as well,
or at least give them competitive games, right So, I
don't know that it's necessary for them to win every game,
or you know, hopefully they can take two out of
three from Seattle. I don't think Seattle is a bad team.
I think at some point they're going to start playing better. So,
(09:49):
you know, hopefully that's for the Faudreys. It's not when
they're in San Diego. But they've got to be competitive.
I think in that first homestand it felt like at
times they weren't that competitive, you know, and whether that
was just sort of gearing up for the season or
getting used to some rhythm in there our bats or
whatever it was, it didn't feel like there was that,
you know, kind of competitiveness that we're used to. So
(10:10):
I think going out there and taking the series from
the Rockies and then putting up a good competitive fight
against the Mariners is kind of what you want to see.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
This homestand all right, we've gone this long without really
talking about the City Connect uniforms those come out, which
came out earlier. I feel like that's more people are
talking about the uniform than they are like the state
of the team or like not even close, right, it's
not even close. So what do you think of them? Like,
what's your what's your first glance reaction?
Speaker 5 (10:36):
I think they're I think they're all right. I mean,
I'm going to go with many.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
I was going to say I thought that was that
we just played right there.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
I think they're all right. You know, I've go with me.
I'm gonna go on the air on Manny's side. You know.
I think that there's there's cool aspects of them. I
think the merch that they're selling in the in the
team store that are not the uniform, but just like
the jackets and the hats and everything, like they definitely
went wild with and there's so many things that they
can do with those. And I think that the uniforms
are fine. I mean, you know, I think what it
(11:07):
is for me is like I love the sugar skulls
and I love that theme. And I guess maybe I
wanted a little bit more of it somewhere or something,
but maybe they weren't allowed to. You know, I don't
know what kind of restrictions Nike has on them or whatever.
But you know, I'm also like not a Navy person,
so I feel like I left Navy behind. But I
(11:27):
think when they get on the on the field and
you see everybody in them and they've got their bone
colored pants or whatever they're calling them, you know, I
bet you everybody will look pretty cool. I bet you
it will look pretty cool. I think it's hard to
tell too sometimes in those pictures because it's like a
professional photograph and like different lighting and all that stuff.
So I'm interested to see how they look on the field.
But I actually want to know what you guys think
(11:47):
of them. What do you think of them?
Speaker 2 (11:48):
I don't know if i'm the one to ask. I
love them. I think they look great. Maybe I'm good.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Maybe I'm getting sold the opposite way, because the pictures
do look good, and they are tight on Twitter or
on Instagram and everything else.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
So I'm a big fan. I like them.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
I pulled that.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
I think Manny actually said this letter in the day
I pulled the whole. I reserve judgment until I see
him on field because I feel like sometimes you see
marketing materials but it's not actually with something looks like.
But I will say this, Andy, I was never enamored
with the first look. Now they were popular, yeah, but
I would say personally, I think it's an upgrade.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
But I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
I feel like they still left meat on the bone
where it's like I think they could have done better.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
That's my first blush reaction.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
It sounds like, yeah, I was gonna say it sounds
like both of your reactions are very six and six.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
Ish six and six on the jersey.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
That's fine, ok, yeah, yeah, but you know what.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
You know what though, at the end of the homestand
they could be like nine and six or whatever. So
I maybe my feeling about the New City connect will
elevate after I see them on the field, you know
what I'm saying. So I'm not, I am not I'm
not like closing the door on that.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
And I got one final one for you, and we
appreciate your time as always here on Schaeffer and Sleiva.
So Tatis, you know clearly he's a conversation He's going
to continue to be a conversation. Has not hit a
home run yet, Let's put all that to the side
when you're around him, or you know, just postgame interviews, batting,
whatever the case is.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
How's this vibe? I mean, can you sense and is
there a sense? Is it different?
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Like I'm not worried about Manny because I think Manny's
gonna it feels like he's just always going to have
the same demeanor.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Is Tatis the same way or does it?
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Can you tell when he's struggling that he is more
emotional for sure?
Speaker 5 (13:35):
So he you can tell when he is and when
he he admits that you know that he wears his
hardness sleeve a little bit more. You know, John and
I have discussed that, Like, on one hand, you don't
want to take away what is Fernando Tatis Junior, which
is really high highs and sometimes really low lows. You know,
it's kind of kind of who he is. You know,
he's more just more of an emotional guy. But at
(13:56):
the same time, I remember John and I discussing this that, like,
you know, how much does body language sometimes translate to
his teammates or to the rest of the guys on
the field, and I wouldn't say it's to that point
at all right now, Like when he's in the clubhouse,
he's having fun with his teammates. When he's on the
field during batting practice, I was just watching him. He's
(14:16):
laughing with his teammates. He's having a good time. So
I don't really feel like it's something where, you know,
his teammates are like, oh man, this guy's just moping
or whatever. I don't feel that way with Fernando. He
he still shows up to his team and he has
a good you know, he's a good teammate to them.
I think I understand where maybe fans see it sometimes.
And I'm not a body language expert, so I know
(14:36):
that how we can look for fans, and maybe there
is an element of truth to that during a game,
you know, like where it does feel a little bit
like oh shucks sort of thing. And I think that
there is, you know, something to be looked at there,
right like does it does it affect guys? Does it not?
I have no idea, you know, but I think in general,
like seeing him, watching him today, watching him interact with
(14:57):
other guys, you know, he's still bringing fun to them
like he's still bringing his laught and he's still having
a good time with them, and he'll still dance out
there by the by the batting cage and everything like that.
So I definitely wouldn't read too much into that part
of it. You know, he's still a good teammates to
all those guys.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Annie love catching up.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Appreciate you taking time for us, and we look forward
to doing it again soon.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
But hope all is well.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Appreciate it. I hope all well to you guys as well,
and I look forward to being back on on the
Shaper and Sleawashow.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Thank you Aane love, thank you, love that and let
us know what city connect you on. Let us know
what city connect you on and Alan will pick that up.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Are you getting it?
Speaker 5 (15:35):
Wait? Are you getting it from like a swap means
sort of thing? Are you getting it from?
Speaker 1 (15:39):
What are the authentics? What have you been in the store?
The authentics have to be three hundred seventy.
Speaker 6 (15:42):
Dollars, They got to be pretty high, and I think
like those jackets and everything I was talking about, they
got to be pretty high. So so, but you know what,
save your money, save your money, and once you, once
you scrounge enough of it, you know, we go get.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
Me a jersey.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
They're going to check your credit score when you go
in thereat.
Speaker 4 (15:57):
It's like a second mortgage for a jersey. Thanks Anny,
You guys take care, Thank you. We are great.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Great to connect with Andy Halberd from the UT On
the other side, Let's give away family four pack of tickets.
It says to be placed coming up in thirteen.
