Speaker 2 (00:09):
The Padres Report with Kevin Acy. He's brought to you
by Hamoul Casino Resort A Players.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
This is all yours Hamul Casino Resort, the Players Place.
Always great to welcome in our Padres Insader Kevin A.
See he is in Boston, Massachusetts, where the Padres first
road game of the year ends in defeat. They lose
five to two and they're at two and five on
the season. Kevin, as always, we appreciate you taking time

(00:35):
for us here on San Diego Sports seven sixty. I
guess I'll start with the simple question without the simple answer,
what's going on right now with this offense that has
scored twenty one combined runs in seven games.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Well, they would have you believe, and I don't think
they're entirely wrong, and none of us have the time
or the expertise to break down every single one of
their bats and have a really cogent argument with them,
but they would maintain that if they continue doing what
they're doing, things will change.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
And there are some metrics that suggest that that's okay, cool.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Seven games in right, small sample size, things haven't gone
your way. If this is July, it's like, okay, by it, man,
they had seven games where they were smacked in the
ball kind of and it.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Didn't go their way.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Okay, all right, whatever, you know, magnify at the beginning
of the season. But yeah, they're My answer.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
To you is like, they're just not hitting well.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
And you know, Jackson Merril's had his moments and that's
about it, right, if we're talking about like the guys
you expect to hit, Jackson Merrill's had his moments and
that's about it.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
Kevin, Is there one thing that's and maybe it is
the bests? Is there one thing that's just surprised you
the most? Maybe walking into the season you thought, oh,
I think this is going to happen. And again, like
we've said and we'll probably continue to say for the
next month or so, small samples eyes, anything specific stood
out to you so far?

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Uh? What what is? What has stood out to me
is that the things that.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
We were concerned about going in or the things to
be concerned about now that has stood out to me.
So it's not like really anything has surprised me. I
wouldn't have necessarily been surprised if Manny had started hot,
or Talk to Us had started hot, or Maryland started
super hot, or I wouldn't have been surprised because that's
what they're supposed to do and they're capable of doing that.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
But I guess the big thing to me so far
is like same as you know.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
After the first couple series, which is huh, well, we
were a little worried about the starting pitching, and we
were a little worried about the offense, and.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
You know, here this is what happened.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Now, Michael King wasn't terrible today and what he made
it an out way from uh, you know, getting the
what would have been a art didn't happen.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
So you know, hey, can I ask you about that?

Speaker 1 (03:05):
To follow off Kevin a c or Podcres Insider, It's
not like the game was determined by pulling King for
Parolta there. I mean, they didn't score another run. They're
Aready Tree out three too, so they likely lose either way.
Did you find that to be Again, with the benefit
of hindsight, it's very easy for me to play this game.
I would imagine it eighty one pitches, Michael King thinks
he probably should stay in that game. This is I

(03:26):
think the second time now they've gone to Parolton in
one of these lefty and lefty spots. It hasn't worked out.
With the benefit of hindsight, you think he sticks with
King there? Or is that what they wanted to do,
Get it to a lefty, give it to Parolta and
trust their bullpen from there on out.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, yeah, that's what they wanted to do. And I
am so glad.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
That you asked, because I feel like, John, you have
a good pulse on the mindset of the fan. Maybe
not as good as a pulse as our boy Matt Devine,
but you got a good pulse on on what the
p fuller talking about and thinking about. And my newsletter
tomorrow will address this very thing where this guy and

(04:07):
Craig was so good about it. I talked to him
today in the dugout, so good about it, and he's
just so candid. I'm sure people have a big problem
with that too. But like, here's a guy that we've
all been questioning for taking guys out too soon, and
now we're questioning them for taking a guy out too soon,

(04:30):
Like the opposite, right, Like we're saying it's too soon now,
and like like like I'm sorry, we're taking guys out,
you know, too late, leading them in too long, and
now we're saying too soon, right, So come on. And
I'm not saying that to you necessarily, John, because it's
a valid question. I asked the question a different way

(04:51):
to Craig Stammon after the game, but it's a valid question,
and and and and so I'm.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Glad that you asked it.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
But like, oh, for the love of Pete and this
guy do anything right. And I'm not defending I'm not
saying that all the decisions he's made are right. Do
not get me wrong, like I've questioned him as well,
but like, holy smokes, folks. And then the reason today.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
End of the fifth some hard hit outs.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Sixth you had one hundred and thirteen mile an hour
single and a home run that went on too and
I realized, it's not that big of a poke to
hit a ball into the street here, but you know,
Wilson Contrerez did it, And so that was the reasoning.
And I am sure in the back of his mind

(05:39):
to some extent, even though the matchup with Wandy is
what they wanted.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
In the back of his.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Mind to some extent, he's probably going, Man, I'd love
to leave Michael out there, but look what's happened when
I've done that, And I will tell you he was
he was gone. He was on he was on the
top step. It wasn't like he was battling with himself.
He was on the top step before that strikeout. Because
Michael's last batter, I believe was a strikeout. He was ready.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Craig was ready to go.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Kevin Acy joining us here on the Schaeffer and Sliwa show. Kevin,
I'm I'm you know, we were talking about we're looking
at the bats, and instantly you bring up Manny Machado,
you bring up Fernando Tatis, you bring up Jackson Merrill,
just going up and down the list, and John said
something that I'm curious, you know, to get your maybe
your pulse on this. Sander Bogart's name doesn't really come

(06:29):
up in the sense that the expectation you you've almost
lost your expectation or or or he's he's retrained your expectation.
Kind of crazy to say, you know, obviously this early
into a contract and this long of a contract. Just
what's your what's your thoughts on where we're sitting here,
And I don't even hear fans even in going after

(06:51):
Xander either, just you know, your your thoughts on that
topic alone.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
You're right, like you do go after him, but it's
almost like an a tired way, like like you don't
expect it.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Like, look, xanderd.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Bogarts is a part of a Big four only because
of the numbers of you know, the size of his contract, right,
Like he's not a guy, I mean, how to phrase
it here? He shouldn't be considered a part of the
Big four because of his performance overall since joining the Padres,
but he should be considered a part of the Big

(07:25):
four because he makes twenty five million year and you know,
he got a standing ovation today that delayed is first
at bat. As a matter of fact, the ovation and
the delay before his first at bat was ten times
as long as it is that bad because it was
one pitch foul fell out. But like the guy was
an incredible player here in Boston. So great question, like

(07:49):
an apt question that I am just constantly thinking about
because I just I mean, yeah, it is a it
is a problem, but I love it.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Like like the way you phrase yeah, I think like
like I do.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Hear about him a lot from fans, but less than
you are used to, sure, And it's more in like
a resigned way, like yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Sand are still not very good.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Yeah, it's really interesting, Kevin. I mean I just looking
at where they seven games. It's it's hard for you
to go all in. I mean what we do, both
you and your daily writings and us on the radio
where you talk about it for hours at a time.
I mean, you have to give it the benefit of
a little more time here. But when I see a
team that's collectively hitting one ninety two, I do just
kind of scratch my head. This was an offense that

(08:35):
was among the worst in baseball last year by a
lot of mattress, more so with power. I would say,
And here we are seven games in and some of
those same issues are still plugging this team. And I
think it's also very easy for me to say that
they didn't really address the issue that their lineup was
experiencing last year? Did they not? Like what was the
big addition to change their slug? Was it just saying well,

(08:56):
Tatisol hit thirty five home runs? Trust me or so
I guess on and it's like, oh, I'm surprised they're
only hitting one ninety two with that slug. But on
another hand, isn't this kind of who they were for
a lot of last year.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Well that's why it's not really in overreaction at this point,
right right right, like like it is if you're saying, oh,
they're done, they're to yeah. But but but it's it's
it's not that we're just facing any sort of claims
of calamity on on seven games.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
It's it's that it's a continuation.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
And what did they address Well, it's a little yeah,
you you answered it like it was, Hey, we've got
guys by the way that we're paying a.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Butt load that should hit and okay, we didn't.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Hit very well against leftis so Miguel and har and
and this guy had a nine to ninety ops the
last two years and five hundred plate appearances or whatever
against Lefty's and so yeah, you.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Know that that's that was it. That that's how they
addressed it, Hope and.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Miguel and of har Kevin.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
I'm only bringing this up because John and I were
talking a little bit earlier. There was an article in
the UT today and I'm not sure if you got
a chance to read it or not, from Philip Molnar,
And it says US Senator Bernie Sanders introduces bill that
could keep the podres in San Diego. We we are
kind of already gotten too some of the details of it.
Just this is more just a you know, a thought,

(10:23):
a conversation. Do you see any world like is this
a conversation? Is should John and I ever waste our
time having a conversation about this, because just the thought
of it is I can't even tell you what that
that does to my stomach, and I'm sure to many
San Diegan's just what should we ever bring this up?

(10:45):
Should it be a conversation?

Speaker 3 (10:48):
The thought of of what of of the of the bill, the.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
Relocation piece of the actual.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
No, like like they're they're not moving. I mean they're
moving because.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Of a new owner. That's not a thing.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
I think it's an interesting I think it's an interesting
topic when a senator like Bernie Sanders or I don't know,
I don't know exactly how that all works, you know,
I forget from you know, school, like I'm not sure
what the whole legislative process is what was that thing
that used to be on you guys are too young? Yeah, yeah,

(11:24):
so I forget all that.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
But anyway, like.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
I think it's interesting, but like, okay, I mean it's interesting,
like they weren't moving anyway, so okay.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Yeah, all right, so it's not Yeah yeah, again.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
We've talked about it.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah, padres are being sold. Do you know what else
is being sold? The fricking like ninety cellouts in the
last ninety six games is being sold, and the the
you know, all the people coming and buying beers, and
all the people out there on the Gallagher Square and
and and the ballpark. I mean that's being sold as well.
This team's not moving.

Speaker 4 (12:01):
You know what it is, Kevin, it's the any San
Diego is like almost you don't trust anybody or anything anymore, right,
So I think it's that that's always in the back
of your mind. And again just the fact that there's
an article here or there that that's you know, obviously
makes the San Diego feel different than I it was
somebody from a different city.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Let me let me say this, if you if I
could just beg the people to have some context to understand,
I'm the guy who covered like no one else did
at the time, sure the relocation process and based on
extremely high placed sources in the league and around San Diego.

(12:46):
I said as a columnist at the time, and I said,
the Chargers aren't.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
Moving, and I was wrong.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
So if you think that I'm and I take that
very seriously, believe me. I still hear about how I
was wrong about that, and I own it. I mean,
I sat in my hotel room that night and I cried,
just to be honest with you.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Because, like I was so bummed I'd.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Let people down that way. And I during that process,
I came to no fans. Like a lot of times
I talk about being in my ivory tower in the
press box and not really. I connected with fans and
their stories, and I had my own backstory with the Chargers.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Being a native San Diego.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
I was devastated to have been wrong and that they left,
but like to be wrong about that because that was
a big deal, the biggest story in San Diego sports history.
So just I just will give that to say, I
am now screaming at the top of my lungs that
the Padres aren't leading.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
I would not be doing that.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah, if I did not believe it one hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
That's good perspective. By the way, I was crying when
the top of the order went over nineteen today, just
sitting there.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
Yeah, it takes a little more for me, John, takes
a little more for I know. I was in I
was there covering the owners meetings in New York as
I spent a lot of time in New York as
the owners met on this thing. And I filed my
story and I laid down on my bed and I
just I was surprised. It wasn't like sobbing. I surprised myself.

(14:18):
As I'm laying there thinking about this, Heeres began rolling
down my face. I was so disappointed at how it
had all played out and my part in it.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
That's fascinating, that's fascinating. Hopefully Padres fans aren't crying this weekend.
They could just win.

Speaker 4 (14:34):
Uh Ken during Olexander conversation. But let keep that, keep that,
Kevin enjoy Boston.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Will catch up with you from Pittsburgh, PA. Coming next week.

Speaker 3 (14:43):
All right, great, here, thank you.

It’s the unlikeliest of criminal partnerships: a devout polygamist from an insular Utah sect joining forces with a shadowy Armenian tycoon from LA. The result - a billion dollar fraud conspiracy. In Kingdom of Fraud, investigative reporter Michele McPhee traces the origins of the extraordinary alliance between Jacob Kingston and Levon Termendzhyan. Together, the two men trigger the largest tax investigation in American history and weave around themselves a web of dirty cops, influential political relationships and transnational money laundering. All this is set against the backdrop of Jacob Kingston’s clan – The Order. A powerful and secretive polygamist organization in Salt Lake City. To whom Jacob is desperate to prove his worth.
