The support is sponsored by Berger King. Right now in Pittsburgh,
padres Pirates Game two. The Pirates just got on the
board first. They lead to Zip in the bottom of
the fifth and they still got one more runner in
scoring position. In NFL news, Fernando Mendoza to protected number
one pick in the draft and form the league today
that he's not going to attend the draft. Mendoza would
(00:42):
be the latest top pick to not attend the draft
in person. Treron Walker, Trevor Lawrence, Baker, Mayfield, and Miles
Garrett all skip the draft the year they were taking
number one. My draft this year will be held in Pittsburgh,
with the first round beginning on April pointy third, Tony.

It's Schafer and Sliwa Sean Schafer.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
When you think about the city of San Diego, some
of the worst ownership groups, with the Clippers situation, with
the Chargers situation, even the Padres ownership history, has it
always been smooth.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Sailing set Diego Zone, Alan Sliva. I felt like we
went to a stage of baseball where everything was so predetermined.
Why even have a manager? What's the point?
Speaker 5 (01:52):
How you got here?
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Schafer and Sliwa a right follow hour.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
Here on San Diego Spot seven sixty. Always great to
connect with Mark Ziegler, who has been so good to
this station over the years. Back with us right now,
first time on Schaeffer and Slave here on San Diego
Sports seven sixty. But Mark, I've enjoyed your reporting and writing. Obviously,
the transfer portal is open. It's impacting every school in
the country, including San Diego State. So based on what
(02:16):
you know now in terms of the Aztecs roster from
this past season. Is anything surprising to you as of yet?
Or how do you see what's played out over the
last handful of days with the portal opening? How how
do you see it how it's played out? And thanks
propping out?
Speaker 6 (02:33):
Yeah, well, first, welcome Alan.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Thank you man.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
I appreciate you saying that, and I've been reading your
articles for a while, so thank you.
Speaker 6 (02:41):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's really surprising. You know,
I wrote quite a bit towards the end of the
season about you know, I don't want to call it
a mass exodus, but a next of this, the players
probably coming and being imminent, and it's kind of what
we expected. I think this is any surprise right now.
It's that taj de Gourville is not in a portal.
I would have expect to him to get on the portal,
particularly for starting, and he had some troubles during the season.
(03:04):
He had, you know, one incident where he ripped off
his jersey as of frustration, and I know he really
likes it in San Diego. But a player like that,
you know usually sort of you know, you see that
you see sort of screams. He's going to leave, and
he hasn't, so that's a little bit of surprise. The
other guy is not so much. And I think it's
(03:25):
a combination of players wanting to, you know, maybe chase
the money a little bit, but also I think there's
probably some you know, a little polite nudges to get
guys out the door, to maybe start a little bit
fresher with the roster next season and build around Elsie
and Tay and Latrelle and so I think there's a
little bit of that as well.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Mark obviously not knowing what the future is going to
hold for just college athletics in general, what it was
five years ago to where it is today. What are
some of the advantages San Diego State has as based
off the current setup. I'm still and I think everybody's
still trying to kind of figure out this new world
(04:08):
in college athletics. What are some of the ways SDSU
can take advantage of today's system versus maybe what it
was a few years ago.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
Well, it's too bad, And just the timing of all
this is Santy Estate. You know, you started to check
off all these boxes to attract players, and you know,
it was a stable coach and staff respect, the coach
staff they had, that it was a great home crowd
they had, that, it was a great practicability they had,
that great university and a great city had all that.
(04:39):
Putting players in the pros. They had done that, and
the one thing they really hadn't done is made a
really really deep run in March. And then they did that,
and then just as they do that, everything flips and
it's all about money, the one thing they really don't have.
So I still think there are more disadvantages to advantages
right now for them because their budget is not going
to be anywhere near what the Power Conference budgets are
(04:59):
going to be. They're gonna have to be lean and mean,
and you know, that only takes you so far. But
the one thing I think that that you know, when
you when they get into sort of the pay class
of the player that they're looking at and the schools
that are competing against, Yes, they have advantages. You know,
I think your crowd and the arena is a huge advantage.
(05:20):
I think Brian Dutcher and his staff is a huge advantage.
And I think the family atmosphere and culture is you know,
all the players talk about it, even the ones who leave.
I mean Nick Boyd left last year. You know, a
couple of days after a season. Where is he He's
back in San Diego, visiting with the coaches, hanging out
with some of the players of the team, And you
don't see that in other places. And I think that
word kind of gets around. So I think that players.
(05:43):
But if it's you know, if a player's being off
for two million, that's not gonna be enough to get
that player for five hundred thousand.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Mark Ze with the UT has covered the Aztec beat
for a long time. Is with us right now on
Schaeffer and Sliwa. I'm curious to get your thoughts, Mark,
because again you've been so close to it. How do
they address it this time around in terms of needs
like Brian Toucher has spoken publicly about maybe an interest
in going to Europe, something they haven't routinely done previously. Like,
(06:10):
how do you start to attack this and how do
you do it in a matter that might be different
from some of the other programs that do have more
resources when it comes to money than you do.
Speaker 6 (06:20):
So at this point, it's all about finding value for them.
They're not a program making just go say these are
the players we want, how much are going to take?
We just throw enough money at them until we get them.
They can't do that, and so they have to go
find value. Europe is one place to find value. Now.
You know, people have gone and got European bigs because
the big market here is you know, a very finite
(06:42):
supply and the prices of those bigs are just soaring,
and so they feel like there's more value in Europe.
But at a certain point European bigs are to get
tapped out. Everyone's going after europe and bigs. So maybe
the next step to maybe find really good value is
go against you know, go find a European four or
three or two or a shooter or something like that.
(07:03):
And so it'll be interesting to see if they go
after a center or a five man in Europe or if
they go after a smaller player where they maybe can
find a little bit more value. And then the other
thing I think that you know, they are very specific
positions that they're going to have to fill now because
they know what they've lost and they know what they need.
But I think one thing that maybe people are forgetting
(07:25):
when they just get so focused on Okay, they need
a five manuh could shoot, or the four men who
could rebound et cent or whatever it's going to be is.
I think they have to go get the Aztecs. They
have to get those tough guys with chips on their shoulders,
and this group of players that are leaving very talented,
but they never really quite had that then internal grit
that you'd seen the past teams they have got them
(07:46):
over the hump, and they just didn't seem to have that.
And maybe that's unfair to those players. I don't know,
but the two years of sample size, you just didn't
see it. And so I think they're going to try
to look for some of those young yard dogs in
addition to positional leagues but needs. But I think first
and foremost it's going to be the testinal fortitude is
(08:08):
going to be probably the number one in their list.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
It's good observation, right. Talent talents only going to get
you so far. So and there is a little bit
of a DNA that the Aztecs have built over the years.
Mark who does kind of like the current setup right now.
I don't know if I hear people, I don't know
if I hear the masses saying that, Hey, this is
the perfect setup and it makes sense for everybody? Is
(08:32):
it just the programs with the deepest pockets that say, hey,
this this works great. Who is I guess, encouraged by
where college or even college basketball, college football where some
of these programs are. How do most people feel about
it and who's encouraged by it?
Speaker 6 (08:50):
Well? Dusky may certainly likes it just for the national
championships five with five transfer starters, you know, but I'm
not even sure that Mark Pope, who had an unlimited
budget and you know, supposedly north of twenty million dollars,
likes it because look at all the heat he got
to put even more pressure on them to win, and
they didn't win the way that that fan base wanted
them to. I don't think anybody really likes it. But
(09:12):
I also think coaches, and you'll hear this a lot
from Brian Dutcher, coaches a little bit different than maybe
administrators or fans. Coaches are thrown in the system and
they have to win, and they have to figure out
a way to do it, and then put the puzzle
pieces together. Here are the rules, here the restrictions, and
they just put their heads down and blinders on and
they go do it, and so you know, Brian Dusher
(09:34):
will say, yeah, this system sucks, but I'm not it's
above my pay grade to fix it. So you just
tell me what the rules are and I go out
and do that. I hear a lot from coaches. They
don't like it, but this is what the you know,
the rules they're going to operate within. And so they're
going to go out and try to make, you know,
put together the best team they can and when you know,
the largest number of games they can. But I think
(09:55):
what's gonna happen is the next sort of phase is
all these schools, particularly public institutions, are have athletic departments
that are going to be way in the red that
they're just going to be spending, spending, spending, and eventually
the academic side of campuses is going to say, hold
on here, what's our real mission here? Are we in
university or are we a professional sports organization? If we're
(10:17):
a university, we're not going to run these deficits. And
that is going to force the change. I don't think,
you know, athletic directors the NCLA are going to are
going to get this kind of change. I think it's
going to have to come from the academic side of
the universities that really really push it. I'm not sure
they're quite there yet because I don't think academic senates
fact the Senates are aware enough of what these deficits are.
(10:40):
But I think that awareness will start seeing that the
next year or two.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Mark, I know you wrote about this, but you know, again,
with the portal era, it's like anyone can go in
the portal at any time during this you know, this
fifteen day window. Are you under the assumption or you
know your reporting suggests that these players will be back
that haven't yet entered Forget forget about tis to for
a moment you touched on him, but Tay sim has
had a terrific year. Elsie Harrington, if you would have
(11:04):
stayed healthy, I think did a lot of really promising things.
The point guard for the astecs. And then there's Litrell Davis,
the San Jose State transfer that sat out last year
and red shirted. Are you led to believe does your
reporting suggest they'll be back?
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (11:17):
I think all three of those, and bian Dush is
pretty open about, you know, going to build around those three.
You know, I don't think they're going to make an
announcement or it's going to be official until all the
you know, the isre dog and Tea's across of the contracts.
But that's coming. I think what.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
About I'm sorry, what were you saying.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
Mark, No, I think that's coming in the next probably
days or weeks that we'll see. We'll start to see,
like these guys are formalized. But if you're not in
the portal today, it's a pretty good indication that you're
staying with your current tea.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Yeah, that's a fair point. I was going to ask
you before you go, just your thoughts on what do
you think in terms of potential landing spots. Is it
too early to know players like Miles Bird or Magoon
Gwath Do you have any feel for where they could
ultimately end up playing.
Speaker 6 (12:02):
Magoo's a tough one because it's going to be a
program that's going to take a chance on him. Obviously,
they're going to overpay for what he's done this past
year and maybe in the past two years, with the
injuries that he had, the injury history, and they're just
going to take a flyer. He's not going to be
I mean, I would assume he will not be a
central part of their plans. Like if he gets hurt,
they're really screwed. I think he's going to be an
(12:23):
add on to a program that has a ton of
money and can take a chance on a guy like that,
and so who No, it just takes one As terms
of miles BYRD, he's getting interest from everybody. You know,
he's ranked in the top ten, and most of these
portal lists his defensive metrics are through the roof. I'm
not sure that all these programs really understand what type
(12:45):
of player he really is. And maybe I think they're
probably undervaluing his offense and overvaluing his defense a little
bit because he did gamble quite a bit on defense
and his offense. You know, he can do some other
things if he put in the right spots. So you know,
but I think he's going to end up at a
very high major program, you know, Kansas, Kentucky, Baylor, I
(13:08):
mean all those kind of I hear those in Louisville.
Hear these programs thrown out every single day. I know
he's been taking zooms from everybody and trying to narrow
it down, and I think maybe we'll have an idea
of where he might be headed in the next few days,
because I think a lot of these programs want to
tie these guys up quickly. Yeah, and they move on
to the next guy.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Well, it's going to be a fascinating few days or weeks.
And again, if you're an Aztec fan, you need to
be following Mark Ziegler, And of course you can read
his reporting and writing in the San Diego Union Tribune.
So Mark, we appreciate you doing it, and we'll do
it again soon. And thanks propping on.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Thank you Mark? Yep.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
Sure, yes, all right, great stuff from Mark Ziegler at
the UT. He really has dialed in. I mean he's
got an awareness for what's playing out nationally and then
of course what's playing out locally as well.
Speaker 5 (13:49):
Is that fascinating he said that. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
I don't think a lot of these coaches. I don't
think anybody likes what's going on. But the most interesting
part is the all these universities are vesting going to
look at their athletic department and say, hey, we're in
the red here, what are we doing?
Speaker 5 (14:03):
Why are we doing this?
Speaker 2 (14:04):
What's the advantage of paying somebody two million, four million,
whatever the number is, And I'm not here to take
away any money from any of these any of these kids,
but that's wild where we were to what it is today.
I think about just where it's such an extreme difference.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
In no time at all in the grand scheme, dide,
you know you've reached like a climax, or you're in
a problematic period when there's like blogs about Kansas basketball,
how nil has ruined college basketball, like Kansas basketball cannot retake.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
It's pretty funny, roster, pretty funny, and their outlets are
crying out like the Dodgers saying just people are spending
too much. Yes, and that's how you know, Yeah, that's crazy.
That's why we're not at a finished point. But we're
at a point. I hope we get to that point
in baseball very soon where it's like, yeah, the Dodgers,
I hope, I hope we get to that that spot.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
All right, we have an update for you on the
Podcres and the Pirates. On the other side, Paul Skeins
was working on a no hitter into the sixth inning.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
An update Boy Williams and coach k San Diego Sports
seven sixty America's finest sports station.
Speaker 7 (15:28):
All Right, SDFC is back home at snap dragonon Stadium
Saturday night when they take on the Minnesota United. Pregame coverage,
of course with Adrian and Darren begins at seven pm
right here on your home for SCFC Sante Sports seven sixty.
See if I STFC can get back on track after
that loss this Saturday.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Yet again, that's coming up this weekend. By the way, family,
four pack of tickets to sesame place. We've got those
for you, will give them away this hour. The update
from PNC Park in Pittsburgh is that Paul skeens Allen
was working on a no hitter until Fernando Tatis Junior
broke it up in the sixth inning.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
However, they had a little bad luck in that six
as well. They did Mariano hit one hard, Corona Worth
or merrill I thought hit one hard.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
And grind it into a double play. And the way
Pittsburgh has scored two runs tonight. They came against Nick
Povetna in their fifth inning. It came with two outs
on basically a seeing I single. It just kind of
perfectly placed two was it? I realized that down the
left field line. So Pittsburgh tryn to even the series up,
snapped the Padres three game winning streak, and the Pirates
are litting. It's not over. They're in the bottom of
(16:34):
the sixth inning, but it's two nothing, Pirates. I mean,
we talked so much about how Skeens hadn't faced the
Padres the last two years. He looked like Paul Skeens tonight.
I mean, six innings of one hit baseball tonight.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Kind of what you expect.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
And again that there really hasn't been too many threats
other than that passed inning, like we mentioned, where they
finally hit the ball hard. And I don't know if
they're bringing Skeens back, if they'll bring him back here
in the next but yeah, just this is what one
of the best players in baseball does. And we've got
a few of these games now, and I know you
(17:08):
and I both had curiosity about this game because you
face some really good.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
Starting pitching to start the season.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Oh yeah, and in all of those games, your guys
didn't come through so far, right, Who.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Are the ones, we said, Valdez and scooball with Detroit,
Logan web Logan Webb with San Francisco.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
I think they lost that game nine to three.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
Yeah, who they see with Boston and.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Then Skeens today. But I mean that's four and eleven games.
Four and eleven games, you face some really good pitching.
So part of the challenges, you know, as much as
you want to say, you want to make an excuse
sometimes for the Pods say that's a really good pitcher.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
Yeah, well, what are you going to face in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
And nobody's saying you got to get Skins out in
the second inning and you have five runs on him.
Nobody's saying that. But they really have had nothing cooking
today on Skeens, and I guess that's why he's one
of the best pitchers in baseball.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
And Pavetta did not pitch.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
No, they did pull him after five, but he was
one strike away from getting out and going really toe
to toe with sen schemes without giving up a run.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
I'll tell you what the happiest man in Pittsburgh is
the manager of the Pirates, Don Kelly, for Skeens allowing
a hit. And I'll tell you why nobody wants to
have the conversation the third start of the year about
how long of a leash do I have? Yeah, on
this generational player, for example, he's throwing eighty one pitches.
It would have gotten very uncomfortable for Pittsburgh after seven
(18:28):
or eight innings at ninety five pitches, then one hundred
and five pitches.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
It's this is told you do if you're a manager
in that because I think I have my I think
I have what I would do.
Speaker 4 (18:38):
I think I know what he would have done. I
think organizationally, they say he's coming out of the game,
I think they know going in. If they say, hey,
his threshold is ninety five pitches.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
Don't go over.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
Ninety five are not going over. I think with Paul Skans,
who might make four hundred million dollars in his next contract,
they're not willing to do it. Would be my guest,
we've seen so many recent examples.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Let me throw a scenario at you.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
Paul Skeen says I'm staying in the game.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Says I want nothing more than to stay in this game.
I've earned this, I've already gone. Let's say the tougher
part is you're seven in, you still got two innings
left to go, getting through eight.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
Then he stays in.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Then it's like, yeah, you're you're you're keeping him in
because why you're gonna leave him in through eight.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
If you're not keeping him in through nine.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
Well, if you're over ninety pitches through seventy and again
this is theoretical. Now, he's a lot of hit, right,
he's only throwing eighty two pitches. Now, he's got one
out in the seventh inning. But if you're at ninety
through seven, it's the third start of your season, one
of the starts you didn't go in inning? Are you
gonna push it? Is that the spot to push it in?
I'm just wondering.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
I don't know. The tough thing is I think in
the past where you can have these you can play
out scenarios and you can have these conversations with your player,
and you can kind of have a feel for the game.
That's the one part of baseball that I can't stand
about baseball.
Speaker 5 (20:01):
Yeah, just can we can we allow a little bit
more of a feel.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Look, nobody's saying everything's got to be based off of
I get it. It's not like it used to be.
And this isn't Nolan Ryan and he's gonna hundred and
fifty pitch to get that. Yeah, we understand that. Can
there be just I agree? Do we have to walk
into a game with already the script already written.
Speaker 4 (20:20):
It's taking the shine off no hitters, Like, does it
really feel the same if it's like Paveta to Bradge,
the Rodriguez to Jeremiah Strata to Mason Miller. Thankfully the
Padres no hitters in their franchise's history, if come by
one pitcher. In terms of what you know, it was
obviously Cease and Jo Musker of the first in the
(20:40):
history of the franchise. I just the combined no hitter.
This is the point that our former colleague Marty Caswell
made for probably twenty years.
Speaker 5 (20:47):
It is now the combined no hitter.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
It just doesn't feel the same.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
You won a lottery ticket, but thirty seven other people
want like the way, how much did I totally win?
Speaker 5 (20:57):
You want eighty eight dollars?
Speaker 4 (21:00):
Is there an equivalent to well it, sanderd Bogarts, I
didn't expect that homering off Paul Skins.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
I'm buying his jersey.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
I told you last time, wait for the City connect too.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
I'm not getting his jersey, you know. If I'm buying
a jersey right now, I want Loreano's.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
Okay, he's a freaking stud would you get the city
connect two point zero for any player that ju.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Okay, what's the what's the deal on that? That's coming
noway Thursday? Yeah, yeah, I'll be down to get the
city connected.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
Do you think what we saw is what it is?
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Yes? I think so. I think that's the speculation.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Do they leak it on purpose?
Speaker 4 (21:34):
Maybe? I don't know. A great buzz potentially and talking
and interest.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
Look look at this free advertising at five twenty five
on the roads that were giving them. I mean, I
think there is a little bit of buzz to that
say this man, they're gonna kill it with the jersey sales.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
Anyways, say either way things I'm gonnakes standard. Bogart's I mean, interestingly,
has had a good couple of days, by the way,
for the San Diego Padres.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
So we got a game.
Speaker 4 (21:58):
Is the point at PNC Park. It's two to one PI,
it's in the seventh inning.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
It's so funny when you say he's had a good game.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
After the conversation we're having obviously seeing last week we
spend a decent amount on Xander. You know, I'm trying
to figure out why aren't more people angry at him?
It's like I got no energy left. That's what most
people are saying. You know, I don't want to give
him too much credit. I mean it, truly, genuinely is
his job. For the amount of money that he's getting paid,
I don't want to give him.
Speaker 5 (22:25):
I don't want to.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Be a decent player in Major League Baseball. Nobody's asking
to be a Hall of Famer, be a decent player
for the pod race. That's all. You went to Boston
over the weekend. They're giving you a standing goal for
what you did there for obviously X amount of years
I think ten years was he there? Two World Series titles.
I don't have a moment in Xander's history with a
podres where you're like, remember that Xander moment?
Speaker 6 (22:46):
How you do.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
At the game?
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Yeah, So skeens pulled, so he doesn't even go ninety
pitches and the padre is trying to trying to win
and come from behind fashion trailie right now to to
one in the seventh inning, looking for a fourth concent win.
All right, coming up, we're giving away a family four
pack of tickets to sesame place, So we'll give those
away on on both ends.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
San Diego Sports seven sixty America's finest sports station, San
Diego Sports No.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
This report is sponsored by Low's, The Padres and Pirates.
Game two is going on right now in Pittsburgh. We
are in the top of the seventh inning and is
two to one Padres or two to one Pirates. Excuse me.
The Padres have one runner on in NFL news, Fernanda Mendoza,
the detective number one pick in the draft, and formed
(23:39):
the league today that he's not going to attend set drafts.
Mendoza would be the latest top pick to not attend
the draft in person. Trevan Walker, Trevor Lawrence, Baker, Mayfield,
and Miles Garrett all skip out on the draft when
they were taking number one. The draft will be held
in Pittsburgh this year, with the first round beginning on
April twenty third, and tonight we have Lakers basketball on
Sandygo Sports seven sixty one. What's left of the team
(24:02):
takes on OKC. Pregame is set for seven fifteen and
the tip is at seven thirty. The shop spring Fast
and Low's to get an additional free Egle fifty six
volt battery when you buy a select Ego mower, trimmer
or blower only at lows of value through April eighth,
while supplies last.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
In San Diego, Sports seven sixty Schaeffer and Slawa with
you on this Tuesday afternoon. I wanted to say I
had a we had a book, a guest book for tomorrow,
but I forget who that is, but we do. We
will have a guest tomorrow. So be listening for that guest.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
And whenever we remember who it was, and we'll tell you,
be tuned in from when that happens.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
That's because you can only imagine how good.
Speaker 4 (24:53):
Of a guest that's going to be.
Speaker 5 (24:54):
We'll let you know.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
So be listening for that tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (24:57):
I thoct that we're playing mind games with the list,
you know.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
So did we mention I'm losing my mind? Yeah, we
mentioned we did last segment that Xander Boger's home and
off Paul Skins. Oh, here's the not on my bingo
card ever stat of the day for you. The Pittsburgh
Pirates were the only rotation in baseball that had not
allowed a home run this year. Wow, and it's Paul
(25:21):
Skeens that gives it up. Tonight, he was working on
a no hitter in the sixth innings to Jack exactly.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Not to Man.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
Yeah, no to Xander, like not on my bingo card.
That is all you need to know about baseball.
Speaker 5 (25:38):
How do he's not have a home run yesterday? No
they didn't.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
They hit five on the year. No, this is their
sixth five on the year coming in Okay.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
And you said the Pirates starters.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
Had not allowed a home run in ten games until
this thirty degree night where Paul Skans is out there
working on this gem and he lost his solo home
run to Xander Boger's. This has turned out to be
a really good game.
Speaker 5 (26:00):
Yeah, really good game, by the way. Not too shocked.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
I mean, I guess the question was going to be
how would Paveta do tonight? But Pavetta held his ground.
But both certainly a pitching duel, and and with Pavetta
and schemes that that's what you imagine. We were talking
to Darren Smith a little bit earlier, and Darren was
mentioning that, you know, this was an important start for
Paveta because of what happened in game one when he
(26:23):
goes Mono Amano with Schoolball and and came out. Listen,
this is why you're the ace. Right, if you're the
ace of the San Diego Padres, you got to be
competitive every time you go out, and it doesn't matter
who's on the other side, doesn't matter who's pitching for
the other team. And Pavetta did exactly that tonight. He
did his job.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Now the question is going to.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
Be can the Padres bats get to the bullpen of
the Pittsburgh Pirates because we know what we know what
the the bullpen of the San Diego Padres is capable
of doing. But what does it matter to have Mason
Miller if he's not coming in in the ninth with
a lead, so that that's that's obviously what it comes down.
Speaker 4 (27:00):
And again grew up in Pittsburgh. I would love to
see him potentially have that opportunity if the Padrects can
score a couple of runs here for the next couple
of innings, we'll give away this family four pack of
tickets necess to be placed. Coming up in the next
ten minutes, the NBA postseason allen will start if you
include the playing tournament within about a week. Right, the
playing tournament gets underway Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Plane tournament a week and then week and a half,
so a week from this Saturday. Officially the NBA will start,
so they'll start those like ten am games all the
way till ten pm at night.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
So this is the final week of the regular season.
Still we don't know who's going to be the top
seed in the West.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
It's gonna be Oklahoma be the Thunder and Wemby had
a little scary yesterday. I haven't seen, you know, the
severity of the energy. I think it was a rib
or something like that, so be curious to see what
that is. But they will definitely wrap up the number
one seed. The Oklahoma City Thunder will.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
Okay, so okay, see one. San Antonio will be take
an interesting point to me earlier before the show. We're like,
once these seeds are wrapped up up, and yeah, they've
got the five or six days off for the playing tournament,
but they're not gonna They're not gonna risk it. Final
weekend of the regular season, like you said, like like, okay,
See's not gonna play Shay probably you know, the final
Sunday of the regular season, if they've locked up the
(28:13):
one seed.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
I'd say, come Friday, shine everybody down.
Speaker 4 (28:16):
So you kind of like you have your week or
so off to then ramp up for the start of
the postseason. I mean, what do we what are we
basically determining in your opinion in the West, is it
gonna be the Thunder the Spurs, Like, could you envision
a world where the Nuggets or the Rockets or the
Tea Wolves.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
Yeah, I'll simplify for you. Houston is gonna be a
waste of time, Minnesota is gonna be a waste of time.
The Lakers based off of their situation, and frankly, you know,
I think there was gonna be a lot of question
marks around the Lakers even if they were one hundred
percent healthy, Lakers won't be in the mix. And we'll
see what happens with this, you know, this Luca injury
(28:54):
and if he gets a chance to come back. But
I would be questioning, why are you trying to bring
Luca back if you're down too in the playoffs or
depending on when obviously you'll come back.
Speaker 5 (29:02):
And Reeves is going to be out for the first round.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
The only three teams that matter in the Western Conference
are the Oklahoma City Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs, and
the Denver Nuggets. Okay, Denver, Yeah, I'll go a step further, really,
the only team that matters is the Thunder, and the
question is going to be can the other two teams
be in the conversation with OKAC. Maybe San Antonio can
(29:25):
because they did really well against them during the regular season,
But I'm gonna give that edge to OKAC because they
are the defending champs, and I think there's a time
where you kind of ask yourself, like, all right, if
we got to go into full gear, we'll go into
full gear. Now Spurs have beat them three times, right,
It's been very impressive what they've done. I think they
played five times this year because they had the playing
turt or the.
Speaker 5 (29:47):
NBA Cup. But yes, everybody is chasing the Thunder.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
If you're looking at the East, Boston, I'd say Boston
and Detroit are the two teams. Anybody that that and
it can't happened in the East, I think it's more likely.
I think Boston is more likely to go the finals
than anybody else, even though they're not the number one seed.
But that's how I would look at it going through.
Speaker 4 (30:09):
I have a question for you about the NBA Cup. Okay,
because we've only been doing this show for two weeks,
are you pro NBA Cup.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
Just say this real quick.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Victor Wimbinyama avoids major injury doubtful versus the Blazers. But
that's good news. Oh you should be good. Yeah am
I pro NBA Cup. Here's how I look at it.
If Major League Baseball, let's just say there was something
during one hundred and sixty two game seasons to spice
it up a little bit. Maybe it's not the end
of the world. Maybe you know, you think this is
(30:40):
the greatest idea ever.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
Maybe WBC like in season, in season tournament.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
Okay, so let's take that like an idea or a concept,
that kind of model. I will tell you that the
NBA Cup doesn't hurt the NBA.
Speaker 5 (30:54):
Gotcha.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
So I think based off of that, and you have
an eighty two game grind. It's almost the same as
you asked me. I said, the the All Star Game
for the NBA. You're like, yeah, as a little confusing.
Yet three teams this that the NBA All Star Game
nobody already pays any attention to. So this didn't hurt
the NBA All Star Game. I actually thought I thought
it helped the NBA All Star Game. So to go
back to the NBA Cup probably not a bad idea
(31:18):
to have this in season tournament during an eighty two
game grind, when everyone's already kind of paying attention to
the NFL and college football during that timeframe. A lot
of people say they don't pay attention to the NBA
until after Christmas, not even Christmas Day anymore, because the
NFL is like, oh, we'll take Christmas Day too. So
I think with that being said, I've had no issue
(31:39):
with the NBA Cup. The one thing I don't like
is the courts. The courts are I don't like the
courts too much. But how do you deem because the
Lakers won one of these things they did? How do
you how do you look at that? Like what I
thought putting the banner up was stupid.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
That's what I'm saying, Like, what how do you quantify
winning an NBA Cup.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
It's not like a championship. No, it's definitely not, but
it should. It's recognized.
Speaker 4 (31:59):
It's something can't be like, well, the one thing missing
from Steph's legacy is he doesn't have an NBA Cup.
Speaker 5 (32:05):
Thousand percent.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
You can't play no, listen, you gotta take it for
what it is. And here's the problem. The problem with
the NBA. In the NBA Cup, they tried pushing it down.
They tried shoving it down your throat, and by the way,
you had everybody doing you had broadcasters doing it like, yeah, man,
cup can't wait.
Speaker 5 (32:20):
I'm like, what are you doing?
Speaker 2 (32:21):
What are you guys doing?
Speaker 4 (32:22):
Just let this thing.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
If it's gonna gain some traction, let it gain traction organically.
That was the problem with the NBA is how they
wanted to market this thing, how they wanted to make
it sound like it was the greatest thing. There was
a lot of talk when the Lakers put up their
in season banner and listen. I was on LA Radio
at the time, and I was I expressed my opinion,
I think this is the dumbest to have that real
estate which has only championships and Hall of Fame, Hall
(32:47):
of famers, like literally the greatest players to ever play
the game, most of them rock the Purple and gold,
and then you put it in seed.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
It was the worst thing.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
It's like taking this un believable mansion you have and
in front of it putting like a chain linked fence.
It's like, why is that fence there?
Speaker 4 (33:06):
It's just all fit just doesn't it just doesn't fit.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Don't force it. Ye it Actually it's not a terrible
idea if baseball kind of took an idea or a
concept in that. I don't know if there's a way
to do it, but I mean there's a couple.
Speaker 4 (33:17):
Here's the thing, I think, like a lot of these sports,
other than the NFL, the regular seasons have become a
little problematic. We live in this world where everyone wants
everything in like five minutes, and then you got.
Speaker 5 (33:27):
Eight for thirty minutes. I'm very comfortable in thirty.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
Like one hundred and sixty two games of baseball. To
your point, yeah, there's a monotony to it, or eighty
two regular season basketball games. So I understand like trying
to come up with an idea that is creative and
probably creates a revenue as well. I understand that creating
a revenue, but also it's like, I don't know, it's
like I feel like maybe there's a better way to
do it. For example, even the playing event when you
(33:52):
get to the actual postseason right now where you have
the seven, eight, ninety ten right in this play in tournament,
it's like we played eighty two games and you're telling me,
over eighty two games, the tenth best team in the
Eastern Conference needs to see at the table.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
You're not wrong there, that's I would I would say
this if we look again. I don't think it hurt
the NBA. I really don't. I don't think the playing
tournament was this well. Because of the playing tournament's there,
I'm I'm not going to watch the NBA. I don't
think that's yet.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
I'm not.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
But here's what I would say, because I think you
said something about the N season tournament that's important. If
you're below five hundred, you can't get into the N
season tournament. That's what I would say. Like, if there's
a way to just say you can't get into the
in season, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, you can't get into
the plane. If you're below five hundred thirty five, you
(34:44):
haven't earned anything, so let's not put you in the
playing tournament. So if that means there's a year in
the Eastern Conference where the top eight just got in
and there is no nine to ten because they're below
five hundred, sorry, it sounds good.
Speaker 4 (34:55):
Do I need to see the thirty six and forty
two Warriors, like do I need to see are they
really winning the NBA title.
Speaker 5 (35:02):
By the way, I think that's the solution.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
I think the solution is.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
Is what we just said at the teams hunder five.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
If you got a squad that's below five hundred, then
you cannot make the plane tournament.
Speaker 5 (35:12):
And then that kind of cleans up that portion of it.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
One last point before we break here. Yeah, and we're
giving away four pack of tickets to sess Me Place.
What I just came up with the idea, yep, okay,
and I'll share it with you on the other side.
If you want a four pack of tickets throw to
Sessme Place, call right now, caller seven. You are going.
We've got a free four pack of tickets to sess
Me Place for Caller seven. Call eight seven seven seven
(35:35):
six seven four seven sixty and call right now eight
seven seven seven six seven four seven sixty. Sessme Place
back and turning four and guests are invited to a
birthday bashful of laughter, hugs and furry fun. Open daily
now through April fifth, which has already passed for spring break,
Families can enjoy rides, the Sesame Street party, parade, story
time with Big Bird, and.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
More Diego Sports High Heard Radios day Guaranteed human.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
Alright, Schefferens Leewell, final time on San Diego Sports seven
to sixty.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
The final time, but just well, you never know.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
How about how about the start off the day we
were already pitching a four day work week.
Speaker 5 (36:28):
We're like, hey, we really liked yesterday's situation.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
Of just being off Monday, just because listen, we can
do something on YouTube. But half hour max, we'll get
our We'll get you. We'll give you our best stuff
in a half hours, right exactly, we're back tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
If we are back tomorrow, San Diego Sports seven sixty,
p Andre is trying to pull a rabbit out of
a half. They trail in Pittsburgh two to one in
the eighth, so they'll have three outs to work with
to trying to get even. We're ahead in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
Just trying to split these final two, right, soah, they yeah,
get home six and six after the two and four start.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
I'll take that in a heartbeat, completely agree. There's something
I have, an idea I need to share with you,
maybe even came up in the first week of the show,
but I need your thoughts on it because you have
been a lifelong NBA fan, and some of that's now
covered the league. Here's my idea to fix the lottery.
I'm dead serious. The ten teams that aren't in the postseason,
(37:21):
and maybe it's more than that is the plane. I'm
gonna need.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Something that's pathetic to hear. Right, there's only ten. Here's
what I'm doing that Major league. I'm I'm doing a
lottery tournament. Okay, the teams are playing for the pick.
Those ten teams are now playing for the pick. So
three plays ten, four plays, nine, five plays eight, six
(37:44):
place seven.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
When do we do this at the end of the
season during the NBA playoffs. It's gonna be awesome. This
is during the NBA playoffs. Similar it's like three rounds,
but this is one. I'm done, like the NCAA turns.
Speaker 2 (37:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (37:58):
So anyway, the top two, it buys top two being
the teams that were closest to the playoffs, three place
ten and so on and so forth. Now we're down
to eight teams and from eight to four to two
to one. One gets the first pick, two gets the
second pick, so on and so forth.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Here's the problem.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
That's the issue.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
Here's the problem.
Speaker 6 (38:15):
In it.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
It's actually a very unique idea. But let me let
me throw something out here. I'm Miami, Okay, I'm sitting
at the number eight seed in the Eastern Conference. Now
I want into the play I'm not making the playoffs.
Now I want in the Lotto tournament. Wait, you're telling
me I can I got a shot at the number
one seed. I'm not making the playoffs. I'm doing everything
(38:39):
I can't to not make the playoffs. So then I
could go get Victor Webbin Yama. That's sitting and waiting there.
It was just super Flag is waiting is waiting there?
Speaker 4 (38:48):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
By the way, you're gonna have a ton of teams
now trying to win a tournament because what what did
we just say? We just we're joking around about this.
I'm like, hey, here are the teams. I got a
shot in the West. It's okay. See then San Antonio,
if I'm the Lakers, I'm trying to get out of that.
That's That's the only issue with that, Okay.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
But something like that.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
I think what Brent said a couple of days ago,
I think there's something to it. Hey, enough of this percentages.
Everyone has an equal percentage that's it. Everyone out of
the playoffs, everyone out of the players. You got an
equal percentage, which is a which is a low percentage
to begin with, which is exactly why that won't stop
people from competing. It won't stop teams from continuing to
(39:34):
play through the rest of the season. Not shutting down
Giannis attent to Coompo until there's an investigation from the
from the from the NBA, saying why are you shutting
him down.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
If he's healthy?
Speaker 4 (39:45):
Why is this not an issue in like the NFL,
No NFL. I think it is, though maybe an issue
in the NFL is just people don't talk about it, right.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
I think the issue in the NFL isn't the team
trying to lose. I think the fans are the ones saying,
why the hell did you win that game?
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Right?
Speaker 2 (40:00):
But it feels like in the NFL's talked about a
lot less in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
Yes, it's all they talk about in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Is that just like does the NBA have bad PR
because it does have I think the NBA does have
bad PR.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
Agree, but did you? I saw something recently on social
media where it said that the gap between the top
and the bottom of the NBA has never been wider,
and that the evidence was, like, the ten teams are
the best records against the ten teams of the worst record.
The ten teams the best record never lose, oh to
the ten to not never.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
I know.
Speaker 4 (40:31):
Point the next percentage of the bottom ten is like
ten percent, where in nineteen ninety five the winning percentage
the bottom ten was like thirty three percent. So this
gap is so wide between the good and the bad
that maybe it's never been wider.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
Here's what the NBA has done right. Okay, frisking thing
falling apart here was Xander.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
Yeah, so the Pazzers are trying to stay within a
run of Pittsburgh in the eighth inning. We'll see if
they can. I'm in here, just booted at bad play
by Zander.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
Yeah, yeah, not even though whatever, No, it's it. He's
good for the next two weeks, exactly, doesn't have to
do anything. Lost my train of thought. Everything was fine,
I knew where I was going, and then I see
Xander gets me in that frustrated state of mind.
Speaker 4 (41:15):
Right we were talking about we're talking about.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Public relations for the NBA. P I will say, this
is what the NBA has got right. Yeah, well that's
where I was going.
Speaker 5 (41:26):
Then I don't remember what my point was.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 5 (41:31):
What does the NBA got right?
Speaker 6 (41:33):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (41:34):
The NBA got right?
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Is can you tell me how much value this has?
Anyone in the NBA can build a good franchise. You can't.
You can build a good team. Let me just think
about this. Of course you need the right personnel, the
right front office, you need all that, But that I
think every company in every organization needs as.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
What you're saying, Because you're saying, like the Milwaukee Bucks
can win a title.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
They can win a title. Denver can win a title. Okay,
so he can win a title. San Antonio can? They
can all win a title. Shouldn't there be more noise
around how baseball is structured? Like how absurd are we
sitting here today?
Speaker 5 (42:09):
How not?
Speaker 2 (42:09):
And maybe maybe markets are doing this. San Diego doesn't
need to be the only market. We just happened to
be in the NL West and probably are the worst
situated one. But how is every team in Major League
Baseball not saying, yeah, you think this is the right
system for all of these teams?
Speaker 6 (42:25):
Right?
Speaker 4 (42:25):
Because you're saying, like when a baseball season starts, I
already know. For example, Pittsburgh's not winning the World Series.
I already know Miami is not winning a World Series. Colorado,
maybe you say the same in the NBA, though, I
think heading into the year, we all knew the Pelicans
weren't exactly going to win a title.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
But they're all playing on an equal playing true.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
Difference, like the difference.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
At the end of the day, the only thing that
matters is are you playing on an equal playing field
or not. I don't think baseball is. I think the
NBA actually is. I think the NBA is playing off
a model that that gives every market an opportunity.
Speaker 4 (42:57):
Now do you think we get there? I mean, seriously,
I will we get there with just the CBA in baseball?
Like the next CBA solves that get closer, get closer,
that's all.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
I mean, what else you supposed to do? Get closer?
Speaker 4 (43:09):
They pretend every CBA like, hey, some of this has
been solved then.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
But is it different now? Do you feel it's different now?
Just based off of brother Look, look what's happened in
the last two years. Let's what happened in the last
three years. I mean, if the Dodgers have not forced
the change to the CBA. If that hasn't happened now,
if that doesn't happen now.
Speaker 4 (43:31):
Never, But what about the Yankees of the nineties. They
were spenders, they.
Speaker 6 (43:34):
Won a lot.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
Yeah, but look at how many guys they were cropping
through their system. A lot of guys said, and listen,
I'm not telling you the way that it was done
in the nineties.
Speaker 5 (43:42):
It was perfect.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
But can we at least just address what's happening today show? Hey,
they're paying two million a year for right, like all
the all that the money that they're backloading. Hey, we
can here for hours.
Speaker 4 (43:56):
