Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Cracking this morning, a presentation of the Kraken
Audio Network Ken Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Here's Mike Benton quarter pole.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
The season has arrived in the Seattle Cracking very much
till in this mix.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
We welcome you to Cracking this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
On a Sunday, November twenty third, Mike Benton with you
and a Sunday matinee game for the least a Pacific
time zone coming your way from the Seattle Kraken and
the New York Islanders from Ubs Arena on Long Island.
So the Cracking trying to end back to back with
their first win in this situation since.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Twenty twenty three, twenty four.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
It would be quite fitting the way that things have
certainly gone to begin this regular season once again two
pm Pacific time, puck drop airtime one thirty for your
pregame show, served up by Frost Brewed Corse Light Shoes
Chill ever it fits you, al Koniski on Long Island
with the call I'll join you nearby Climbate Pledge Arena
right across this at Tom's Watchbar. Come on down hang

(01:03):
out with us every time. Once again one thirty on
the flagship ninety three three KJIFM, and all across the
Emerald Queen Casino Kraken Audio Network. Alan Fearing radio play
by play voice of the Islanders coming up with us
in just a bit. We'll dive into how the Islanders
have reached this point as well, very much in the
mix on the Eastern Conference side at twelve eight and

(01:25):
two twenty six points, and like the Kraken, in sniffing
distance a first place in their division. We'll talk Matt Barzela,
we'll talk Bowl Horvat and indeed this past summer's first
overall pick, Matthew Schaeffer already turning plenty of aheads with
the work that he's doing right back on the Islander's
blue line. We'll talk about those challenges here on the

(01:46):
Kraken side, coming up in just a bit, But before that,
here's how the Kraken kept pace in the Pacific Division
with a record of eleven five and five twenty seven
points and two back of first play Santaheim. The Kraken
last evening heading into Pittsburgh knowing they were going to
be in for a stip challenge because the Penguins had
dropped a five nothing loss the night before at home

(02:09):
to the Minnesota Wild. Not to mention, Sidney Prosby is
the kind of guy who doesn't take these games lightly,
averaging over a point per game in the following game
after a loss. But the Kraken, getting through a scoreless
tie in period one went right to work in period two,
as we take you on an audio thrill ride where

(02:31):
the calls here from Everetten now.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Turns away from Maddy buteers.

Speaker 5 (02:35):
This one flipped up to the boards, knocked down by Marchman,
but he gives it right back and we'll steal it
right back. Marchmen fires scores, they said, march Ben puts
the cracket on the board, won nothing, eighteen thirty six
to play in the period. He was so excited when
he celebrated that he to picked and a face planted

(02:58):
on the ice. I'm sorry for lap Bush cracking on
the board.

Speaker 6 (03:02):
And well it was Marsham with that kept the puck
in at the offensive blue line there, kept it deep
and then hung around the top of the circles and
got a gift from the Penguins defenseman which was the
puck and uh shot from the top of the circles
beats for her Bershov. It's one nothing.

Speaker 5 (03:18):
Grindor Dor left wing still send this in By and Grubauer.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Out to play it.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
Saner faded front, Tour out to Crosby.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
He scores.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
Sidney Crosby in the slot. Connor Tour picked up the
puck in the left corner. Grubauer came out to play
it a little slow getting back into the goal.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Penguin on the board were at Sidney Crosby again near
side to the corner.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
Malkin back to Crosby right wing, bump past the kendle,
Malcolm down low center the pass in front. Seattle knocks
it free and lose butt there, he said.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
They score Guinea Malkin.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
On about the eighth pop check able to squeeze it
on through by Groobauer and the Penguins take their first
lead of the game, two to one with fourteen oh
four left in the thirds on the left wing gives
it up to Mason Marshmant backside from an ear Settles

(04:23):
shoots stooms Maddy Baneers from the right circle as he
tucks it up over the shoulder of miroshav And in
the Seattle cracket tie the game in the third two
two seven twenty four to go in regulation, Well it.

Speaker 6 (04:42):
Was everly in front of the net haad dumb, but
tied up that gave Matty Benier's space behind the bottom
of the circles over on that right side. He got
a fantastic feet from Marchman had all the time and
the day to roof it. This game's tied up to
row through center left side, over the blue line.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
Good drow to the line Montor walks in sh stars Montemania.
In overtime in Pittsburgh, it's a three to two Seattle
crack and win.

Speaker 6 (05:13):
What a great feed that Mantra received just inside the
middle of the blue line of the offensive end. He
has tons of time to get his space up. He
beats murshov low crack and win three two. Bring on
the funnel cake.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Oh you bet those funnel cakes tastes sweet. Indeed the
cracking picking up there for victory in sudden death overtime
two and one. Now on the road trip through three games,
heading into the fourth and final game. Here for today,
Mason March Mit Maddy Benier's that duo looking for breakout games.
They got them. Marsh been picking up this first goal

(05:45):
since opening night, Veniers snapping out of an eight game
goal scoring drought and both players picking up multi point
games in the process. Not to mention the penalty kill
coming through in a big kind of way three kills
in period one win. It looked a bit bleak with
the crack and face in the league's best power play
and Philip Grubauer, what else can you say but terrific

(06:06):
turning in a thirty one save effort. Here's a reaction
after the game from crackinghead coach Lane Lambert meeting with
the media in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
Again, I think we can build on our third period
in terms of you know, when we got down, I
thought we you know, started to make more plays and
create more stuff offensively. I think we have to do that.
We have to do that right from the get go.
But you know, we defended as hard as we could.
You know, I thought our goaltender played a great game,
and you know, there's no question that we're going to

(06:36):
be right back at it here not too many hours.
So we just have to make sure that we focus
in and you know, be good with our structure tomorrow.
How valuable is Brandon Montur in the role that he's
played for this team, especially through the last week or so. Yeah, well,
he's an extremely valuable guy. He started to kill penalties
now a little bit now that he's got his feet
under him here after taking you know, having to take

(06:57):
some time off there, and you know, it's really nice
to see him score.

Speaker 6 (07:01):
Marchman told me that he told himself coming into this
game that he was not passing up any single opportunity to.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Shoot the buck.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
How nice was it to see him.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Finally get rewarded. Yeah, I mean, I like the fact
that he doesn't pass off opportunities. We need to continue
doing that as a as an entire group. But you know,
he's played very well, you know, for at least a
couple of weeks now, he's been a force out there.
He's making plays, he's using his body, he's playing well
for us.

Speaker 6 (07:26):
Then you've been a big believer in your penalty kill
pretty much the whole season, but you must have really
been impressed with them tonight in terms of what they
did out there.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
Well, they did a good job in the first period, certainly,
you know, given that that group three power plays, you know,
the game could have got away on us early, you know,
and we did a good job. It just seems like,
you know, it just seems like for whatever reason, you know,
we just can't quite keep it out of our net
for sixty minutes. In terms of that on the kill,

(07:55):
you know, one kind of bounced around. We did everything
right and you know it just kind of ends up
in the spot from all kin to punch it in.
But you know, I think there's been some improvement center
penalty killed a little bit. We've made a couple of
changes and we're going to continue growing.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
We talked about Maddie this week, but what did you
see on this going play from him?

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Well, first full he played well, but he just saw
he saw an opportunity. I thought their goalie maybe potentially
went down a little bit early, and you know that
was a that was a snipe. So really good for
our hockey team that he you know that he was
able to do that.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
All right, end up, back to back, coming up here
for today the only trip of the crake in two
ubs are gonna take it on the New York Islanders
and we have all the action for you a little
bit later on here. But a great pleasure to have
Alan Fearing join us now on cracking this morning. He
is the new play by play voice of the Islanders
on the radio side eighty eight seven FM w r
HU on Long Island. I said that correctly, not in

(08:52):
Long Island. I know that might be a subject here
to to disciplinary action, but I nailed it here off
the jump here.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
I'm for that.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Great to have you, though, Alan, how are you? And
I got to ask you first off? You know you
like me, and you know Brendan Burke, Evert Fitz he
was well on the crack inside of things here. We
all share one common bond, the journey from the ECHL
to the NHL. I mean, you're at you're at this
level now. It's great to be here. But I mean
what advice would you give to younger broadcasters looking to

(09:22):
make that jump years down the road.

Speaker 7 (09:24):
Yeah. Well, first of all, Mike, thanks so much for
having me, and you nailed it on Long Island. And
even if you mess that up, you can get away
with that. I cannot get away with that on the Island.
Can't get away with that either. We would be out
of a job. No, I'm kidding, you know, very very
excited to talk with you again. Thanks for having me,
and I think the number one piece of advice I

(09:45):
would give any young broadcaster those who are currently in
the EHL is seat time, right, Like, just call games,
call as many games as you can, hockey games, other
sports as well. Just keep getting reps, do the job,
listen back to your stuff. Notice where you can get better,
And generally it's the Malcolm Gladwell, you know ten thousand

(10:09):
hours rule in that you know it takes a long
time to get into a position where you feel good
about your call and you get to a level that
can earn you a step up to the American Hockey
League and then the NHL. So just call as many
games as possible, get see time as I call it,
and you know, it's amazing how quickly you'll get better.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
There's something that NHL players have in common and it
doesn't really make a difference here between young and ol
those they're always looking fear for ways to get better
every day, and I think that goes here for us
and our profession as well.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
And I think one.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Great example of a guy who's already doing this and
it seems like he's already about twenty six years of age,
is a guy that you've caught on this blue line
and he's only eighteen in Matthew Schaeffer, My word, what
a prodigy, What a talent, What a future he's got,
and we're already talking about superstar marketing. As far as
he's cancerned here from the East Coast side of things,

(11:02):
he's already earning Cale mccarr comparisons. And there's even talk
now that Team Canada could be considering sending him here
to the Olympics. So I boil it down to this,
what kind of impact has he made this year for
the Islanders?

Speaker 7 (11:16):
Alan, Yeah, you know what, he's a kid who has
made everybody better. He's a great locker room guy. You know,
he's a kid who's humble, but he's confident, and the
guys have really taken him under their wing, whether it's veterans,
when it's guys who have only been in the league
a couple of years. You know, he's quite the glue
for the locker room and a big reason why the

(11:37):
Islanders are playing so well right now. You know, you
mentioned like he came into the league as the number
one overall pick back in June and he had a
huge expectation. But we're still trying to figure out where
the ceiling is and if there is one. You know,
a lot of us on Long Islander are cautious to
compare him to Cale mccarr, to like a Bobby or

(12:01):
but just the fact that we're having this discussion and
those names are starting to be a little synonymous with
Matthew Shaper is is quite something. You know, you mentioned
earlier this week, he's been added to the drug testing
program for Team Canada, so it looks like he may
be on Team Canada's radar for the Olympics, something that
when he was drafted that wasn't even a thought, and

(12:22):
now all of a sudden, it's not that far fetched
and maybe a reality. So I told the guys on
Serious XM a couple of weeks ago that, you know,
for the folks who are in the middle of the
country or who are out west in your case, like
you've seen the video, you've heard about him, you've read
about how good Matthew Shaper is, but until you see
him in person, it's a whole different world. You know,

(12:44):
the kid is so fast, he's got such a long wingspan,
His hockey IQ is off the charts. He's really good
in his defensive zone. He's great offensively as shown by
the numbers, and you know, just he pops even more
in person. So I've had a number of people tell
me after seeing him why for the first time, say like, look,
I knew this kid was good. I didn't know he
was that good. And you know, folks on Long Island

(13:07):
and here in the Tri state area in the Northeast
are real privileged to have this kid. What looks like
it could be for the next twenty years.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
And so the Islander is open the season losing three
in a row, and did they ever turn the season
around ever since?

Speaker 6 (13:22):
Then?

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Twelve four and two. Now that's a record.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Ilia Sarrokan, you use the word swagger to describe how
they're feeling at the very end of this last road
trip here. So what do we know about the Islanders
so far this season at the twenty five percent checkpoint
under Patrick Watt?

Speaker 7 (13:38):
Yeah, we know that they are a very good hockey
team and they have every piece to compete and perhaps
make a run when we get to the spring. Health
is a big one, as it is with any team.
But you know, they've got a world class goalie who
had a rough couple of games to start this season.
But he's found his groove and he's playing every bit
of the ilias serrocan as a bold off your biggest box.

(14:01):
There is a reliable piece of Creeks. But then also
David Riddick got signed as the backup and he's been unbelievable.
He's already won five times this season in seven starts,
so you know when Soroken needs a day off, they
have a guy who can easily get a win in
the backup role in David Riddick, and a guy who's
a former All Star in the NHL, so that part
of the equation is solved.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
You know.

Speaker 7 (14:22):
Defensively, they were a little weak to start. Very much
a fast paced, up tempo offense, one that can score
a lot of goals. Both Horbats right there at the
top of the leader board in the NHL, I think,
only trailing Nathan McKinnon. So you know they've got the offense,
and then the defense was the question. You know, could
they tighten up, could they be a little bit more sharp?

(14:43):
And they have been a recent seven game road trip
and won six of those games, and while the offense
showed up, so did the defense, and a couple of
those games were shutouts, So that's creditaillious Sorocan, but also
the defense as well. Again, to answer your question, I
think the first three games the year started to zwin three,
but they played some pretty good hockey, didn't get the results,

(15:05):
and then the results started to come and I think
at that point we knew that it was a very
exciting team to watch. It was just a little bit inconsistent.
Now they found that consistency, and again I think as
long as they stay healthy, this is a team that's
going to be in the top third of the standings
for most of the year.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Al on the first name that a lot of US
West Coasters and around the Puget Sound go to as
far as recognition on this Islander team as Matt Barzel
for obvious reasons previously with the Seattle Thunderbirds before he
made it all the way in a direct jump here
to the NHL. But a bit of a bump in
the road that he had, of course in late October
miss a team bus was a healthy scratch as well.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
How did he respond?

Speaker 7 (15:42):
Yeah, he was great, and he was He'd be the
first one to tell you that he felt bad about it.
It was an honest mistake. He actually didn't miss any meetings.
He was there at the rink on time for the meetings.
He just happened to miss the bus. So you know,
he owned up to it. Matthew Darsh Patrick Wab both
said that look like we have no ill will or

(16:05):
hard feelings on Matt Barzel. It happens. It happens a lot.
You know. Sometimes it happens with a lot of teams.
You don't even hear about it, but you know they
Matthew Darsh came in and was very punctual and said,
you know, there are going to be certain rules and
and everybody's got to follow him. It doesn't matter if
you're you know, Matt Barzell or you know a veteran
or you know a first year player. Everybody's got to
abide by the same rules. So, you know, Matt Barzell

(16:28):
talked about how difficult it was to sit and watch
and not play, and you know, he's responded very very well.
And I think he's got points in as of today,
it's like eight of his last nine or something off
to double to check that, but he's he's been productive.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
The guy playing ahead of him right now.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
The depth chart is maybe off to his best start
in years, and that's bou Horvat. Twenty five points so
far in twenty one games and the fourteen goals has
got him right around the conversation of the most productive
which includes Nathan McKinnon so far here in this league.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
What version of Bowl or.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
Vat are the Islanders getting so far this season?

Speaker 7 (17:02):
Allen, Yeah, they're getting the Boat or Vat that was
a top player in the Western Conference and in the
NHL when he was with Vancouver. I think that was
back in twenty twenty two, twenty three, right around then.
He you know, he's he's been the top line center
from day one. He's found instant chemistry with Emil Hineman,
who was kind of an afterthought in the no adoptson

(17:23):
trade over this past summer, and he's emerged as one
of the best offensive guys for the Islanders. Those two,
again just just hit it off and kind of one
of those things where it only took two or three
games and now no what passes are connecting? Everybody knows
between those two, they know where they are on the ice,
and they've been able to do some special things and

(17:43):
both of them have really good shots. So when Emil
Hineman has the puck on that top line, everybody's got
to respect that. It leaves a little bit more room
for baut orbat and vice versa, and ba Orvett had
a couple of shots too that I mean just head
scratchers they go in. It's just he's got an unbelievable release,
and you know, like you mentioned right there at the

(18:06):
top of the NHL goal scoring list, he's been so
fun and he's been the top line center right from
the start of the year.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
Finally here it's been a pretty big balancer between Ilia
Sarokan and David Rittick and that end, it looks like
that they really really play great here on this pass
road trip. I think depending upon the balance that Patrick
Wah has and where he wants to go, how much
have they been able to elevate what the Islanders have
been doing here for the season.

Speaker 7 (18:31):
I mean, it all starts with them. They've just been
so solid and again a lot of games in November,
especially with the Olympic break, you know, the schedule gets
condensed so much more, and so you need a second option,
and you need two guys who can go back and
forth and you can trust both of them and that's
been the case so far. So you know, we're really

(18:52):
really happy with where those two are at. Simeon Barlamov
is not too far off. He's been progressing so a
lots to see what he's gets back in where you know,
he shakes out as far as the tandem goes. But
you know, I don't think anybody on Long Island expected
for David Riddick to play as well as he has
and for that one two punch to do as well
as it's been doing.

Speaker 4 (19:13):
Well.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
A lot of this has built the Islanders up into
contention status so far in the Metro Division.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
It's going to be a.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
Pretty good matchup, pretty tough matchup as well here for
the crack and ending back to back. But Alan, appreciate
the few moments, my friend, have a great call, and
one of these days you and I will be able
to cross pass, so looking forward to it. But in
the meantime, appreciate Chip have a good show man.

Speaker 7 (19:34):
Yeah, thanks for having me. Good to catch up with you.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
All right, Allan, thank you very much. Once again.

Speaker 2 (19:38):
Alan Fearing joining us radio play by play voice of
the Islanders as a crack end coming in once more
off a game where they allowed US two goals to
a Pittsburgh team boasting bounced back years from Sydney Crosby
and of Guinny Malkin come in right now for best
defense in the entire league as far as goals against
allowed per game as stands at two point six. Islanders

(20:00):
were short circuited the other day, losing to one of
the Saint Louis Blues, but on their side offensively, bo
Horvat carrying plenty of mail this season, leading the way
with fourteen goals on the campaign. Just two players are
better right now in the NHL, Morgan Geeky with the
Boston Bruins with sixteen and your league leader Nathan McKinnon
with seventeen. Horvap, by the way, leads the Islanders with

(20:23):
twenty five points in twenty two games, but many arguing
Matthew Schaeffer at age eighteen, could be in the running
here for Team MVP. He's your Islanders leader in time
on ice per game at twenty two minutes and forty
eight seconds of pop. Not to mention he's been added
to Team Canada's ninety man lists of Olympic candidates here,

(20:44):
so can you believe that Matthew Schaeffer, just months ago
picked first overall, could be representing Canada in the upcoming
Winter Olympics. A lot to talk about here as both
teams again facing their second game of back to back.
Conventional wisdom, says Joe to Cord, getting rest yesterday could
be in net here for the Kraken, Islander's head coach

(21:04):
Patrick Wall already confirming with the media David Riddick will
start today with Ilia Sarrokin going yesterday, So a lot
to get to hope that you can be with us.
Here is a Kraken aiming for a three to one
road trip and a sweep through a back to bank
situation taking on the New York Islanders today at two
pm Pacific time, airtime at one thirty and again for

(21:26):
pregamer admission and postgame coverage. Come on down and hang
out with us at Tom's watch Bar right across the
streets from Climate Pledge Arena. Big thank you to Alan
Fearing for joining us and for Kraken this morning.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
I'm Mike Benton. Enjoy the game and have a happy Sunday.
