Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here seven nineties.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Cole Thompson.
Speaker 3 (00:04):
You know I did not need to be here this morning.
If so be it, because let's just call it as is.
I should be celebrating what happened last night in the
world of college football. When I said to myself, what
better place to do it than on air with you,
the lovely loyal listeners of Space say Saturday, and that's
what we're here to do. Welcome on into the show,
Cole Thompson, rock with you until one o'clock. You know
(00:27):
the number seven one three two one two five, seven ninety.
The college Football Playoff, however you want to describe it,
regardless of who you're root for, who you root against,
delivered last night in spell bounding fashion. And now we
got a matchup between two top ten teams out of
Kyle Field to where they have an opportunity to continue
to live up to the standing in the billing of
(00:48):
why a twelve team posts and pitcher works the Astros,
they make a major trade that might now put them
in a position to where you feel confident about what
direction the team is going with for the next move.
And I'm also for up a position to where you
got to ask yourself what do you bring in this
offseason for your outfield and the Rockets they take on
the new I mean the Denver Nuggets. Tonight, you can
(01:10):
listen to the call right here on Sports Talk seven
ninety Adam Wexler and Matt Thomas on the microphone seven
two five, seven ninety. We're gonna talk college football because guys,
you know me, we gotta talk college football.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
It's just my background.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
It's something that I care about more than probably life itself.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
It's always to the GOTA care about more than my life.
But we got to start off with the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Of course, tomorrow the Texans are going to move to
ten and five on the year. Yes, I will be
that bowsful son of a gun that says, hey, don't
even worry about the game, don't worry about who's playing
quarterback for Las Vegas, who's gonna be out for Houston.
They are a two win team. This is an organization
that has no direction, no future.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
And even if I am somebody who believes that you have.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Got to give Pete Carroll one more season to kind
of steer the ship in the right direction, we know
that this is a team that has always hit the
panic button far to early.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Did it when they fired Rich Basaccia after.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Taking them to the playoffs, did it after they went
and brought in Josh McDaniel, did it with the Antonio
Pierce move. So regardless of how you feel, they are going
to be panicking going into this game as they try
to get the number one overall pick, which means the
Texans they're gonna be sitting with another double digit win.
And I brought up this take on Friday Show and
I didn't get enough feedback, So I want to get
it from you guys, seven seven ninety what they win
(02:26):
on Sunday. Demiko Ryans is going to be now the
first coach to finish the year with three straight double
digit victories as a coach. That means that he will
be the fastest coach in franchise history to get to
thirty wins. This would mean that he has an opportunity,
with two more wins over the Los Angeles Chargers and
the Indianapolis Colts, to have the best regular season in
(02:49):
college in the NFL for Houston since the days of
the Gary Kubiak era, a coach that he played underneath.
And I said this, and I didn't get enough feedback,
So I want to hear from you. I Tamiko Ryans
gets a win tomorrow and guarantees that he has thirty
victories in his first three years. I think that he
has proven he is the best coach in franchise history.
(03:12):
I am in lockstep to believe that he is proven
at this point he's the goat. And I'll take it
a step further because a lot of people go will call,
how can you say that when nobody has been able
to get past the divisional round? How can you say
that about somebody who's not been able to put themselves
in the same position, put themselves past the position of
Bill O'Brien, of Dom Kpers, of David Cully, of Lovey Smith,
(03:34):
or even you could throw in Gary Kubiak. We'll explain
because it goes a step further. With the Texans underneath
Gary Kubiak not a top ten offense sin scoring at
one point. One year was in twenty eleven when they
went eleven to five, I mean twenty twelve, when they
went twelve and five that season two.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Thy eleven, My apologies.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
They had one top ten offense, the defense, which is
the preliminary priority underneath to Miko Ranens has now had
back to back seasons where they ranked top five in
passing yards allowed per game, in rushing yards allowed per game,
holld yards allowed per contest, third don conversions, red zone scoring,
(04:14):
and scoring overall. This is a defense that right now
currently ranks number one in the NFL in scoring holding
opponents to under seventeen points per contest. This is a
team right now that is holding opponents to under two
hundred and ninety five yards of offense per contest. My apologies,
let's go a step further two hundred and seventy yards
per contest. They ranked top five in passing yards allowed
(04:36):
per game at one hundred and seventy six point five,
and they are one of five teams that is allowing
less than ninety one yards on the ground per game.
Out all that together after last season where you went
ten to seven with a schedule that was more challenging
than twenty twenty three, and added in this season with
a team that had to face off against the Baltimore
(04:58):
Ravens on the road, the buff Bills at home on
a short week, the Kansas City Chiefs on the road
in a matchup against still a healthy Patrick Mahomes, maybe
not a fully healthy but still a healthy Patrick Mahomes
going toe to toe with an Indianapolis Colt scene that
was playing with house money, facing off against a division
champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers that did go down to the wire,
(05:18):
and now being able to say your backup quarterback was
at least able to keep it interesting against a Denver
Broncos team that currently is one win away from almost
guaranteeing that they get the number one seed in the
AF scene, and you're sitting at nine to five, going
to be ten and five tomorrow. Tell me why Demico
Ryans has not earned a right to be in that
conversation for goat for Houston football. I'm just asking because
(05:40):
when I look at what he's been able to accomplish,
no other coach can say that in franchise history. Now,
no other coach can also say that they've been able
to punch their ticket pass the division around of the playoff.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
But let's just call it as is. Do you think that.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
This is the season that the Texans will be able
to shoot themselves in the foot?
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Because I don't.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
When you look top a bottom around the AF scene,
who's issue? Who truly says this is the team that
is going to knock us out at playoff contention, Who
actually says that this is the team that's gonna put
us in a position to where we're not gonna be
able to deliver on Saturday or Sunday. We're gonna be
a one and done in the playoffs. Because nobody says that,
And you want know why nobody says that, because it's
(06:18):
almost impossibly that that's going to be the case.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
I'm serious, And.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
That doesn't mean that I don't think that the Texans.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Could find a way to lose some games.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
What I'm saying is that the Texans there's no game
to where you say, oh, automatically done in years past,
when you look at the Texans going into the playoff
against Kansas City or Baltimore or Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
You could see a clear indication. Yeah, they're not.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Built in the same process. They're not at the same capacity.
Like Houston has a good team, Houston's really well put
together defensively, Houston maybe has a superstar wide receiver in
Nico Collins. Houston's able to run the football efficiently with
Joe Mixon, but it's not clicking at the right time.
Play calling is a skew. The offensive line is dog water.
They're not able to build any rapport on third down.
(06:58):
So therefore, if you face off against buffal on the road, yeah,
you're probably gonna get your ass kicked.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
You go to.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Kansas City, you don't have anybody that can slow down
Travis Kelsey. Okay, best of lucky your future endeavors. You're
not going to the past the for second round this year,
you gotta go up against the Baltimore Ravens, who has
the number one scoring defense, who has a top five
passing defense, and is able to go ahead and put
points on the board against you in the second half
of games. They have a more consistent passing game. Well
guess what that is where you're going to have to say, eh, thanks,
(07:25):
but no thanks, You're gonna be done.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Does anybody do that this year in the AFC? I
mean quite lely.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
I'm asking you seven one through two, one two, five,
seven ninety, who's the team that says, Yep, we're gonna
lose that game. I can understand if you say the
Buffalo Bills, but you better throw a caveat in there, Frankie.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
If they said the Buffalo bills.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
The answer in return should be, so long as it's
at high Mark Stadium in negative ten degree whether where
wind show makes it negative twenty and on top of
that the wind is at twenty five.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Miles per hour.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Therefore, you're unable to throw the football and you can
only trust your run game, an area of weakness for
the Texans. But let's say that game is in Houston
at NRG Stadium. You've had Josh Allen's number the entirety
of his career. Go back to when you were playing
with the other quarterback that is now in the Lost
Land of Cleveland and has kind of thrown his career
to the wayside. You were able to win with him
(08:17):
as Josh Allen was in year two. So remember that
you have still been able to own Josh Allen whenever
you play inside of Houston. Did it in twenty nineteen,
did it in twenty twenty three, did it in twenty
twenty four, did it in twenty twenty five. You've won
that game. So you win that game, you gotta feel
pretty good about this is in Houston AFC Championship.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
We're good. Look at the New England Patriots. Do you
think that right now?
Speaker 3 (08:44):
That they're built to be able to go on a
massive run because I know, listen, they reminded me so
much of the Texans in twenty twenty three. And I
will be completely honest with you either the Texans in
twenty twenty three, good story, definitely belonged in the playoff,
had earned their right to say that they could make
noise in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
And I think New England can too.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Solid offensive line, quarterback that is playing with house money,
they got a number one receiver that's finding ways to
get on open They're great in the defensive front, and
they got a coach that people are rallying behind. All
the things that you want to hear are there. But
the difference between a team like Houston Buffalo and New
England two teams that playoff experience, you don't.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Eventually, the Chickens will come home to roost.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
It may come in the divisional round, it may come
in the conference title game, but we all know that
New England is going to see the other shoe drop
and they're gonna be sitting at home in February, not
playing out in Santa Clara. The offense of the Denver
Broncos has massive faults top to bottom. They need fourth
quarter comeback after fourth quarter comeback at bo Nick somehow
channeling his inner Drew Brees and an offense that only
(09:46):
caters to a certain brand to passer to be.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Able to win football games.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
You slow them down, you're able to jump up to
a ten to nothing disadvantage or a ten nothing advantage
in this standpoint, you can coast. How about the Baltimore Ravens.
Nobody believes in this offense. Their defense still is very
hit and miss. You talk about seeing like the Pittsburgh Steelers.
They'll be lucky once again to follow the as is tradition,
going ten and seven, finding a way to hit over
(10:12):
five hundred and then losing in the first round death taxes,
Mike Tomlin hitting the double digit victory only to lose
in the first round of January. Do you really think
that right now that you can trust this Los Angeles
Chargers offense? Do you really think right now you can
trust Indianapolis with the forty four year old grandpa running
the show.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Please please spare me.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
If you're gonna bring up the Jacksonville Jaguars, it's a
great story. Congratulations to Liam Cohen. You able to go
ahead and kind of take advantages and put yourself in
a position to where people now see that this team
is legit because of its coach. I've also seen your
quarterback make plays in the postseason. It ain't pretty and
it ain't gonna be pretty much to get into January football.
(10:53):
It is going to be a world of hurt and
the only person that.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
You have to blame is yourself.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
So the Texans right now, nobody stands in their way
except for them, which means that this is the first
time that I can confidently say they should be considered
a favor to go on a run to the AFC
Championship Game. And if they do, it'll be the first
time in franchise history the Houston has gotten there. And
if that means it's the first time in the history
(11:17):
that Houston has gotten there, it will be led by
a coach who in year three has constantly gotten you
into double digit victories, has taken you to the first
and the second round of the postseason, like every other
coach has come through this building, or at least the
coaches that we considered among the greats and in the
Mount Rushmore of Texans football. And it'll be the first
one to be able to accomplish a feat that at
this point has felt like kind of the super Bowl
(11:39):
of overall expectations. You throw that in compliment back to
back top ten defenses, compliment having a franchise quarterback that's
been able to turn the tide around. Compliment that with
the ability to trust that your offensive line is delivered,
having a new offensive play caller, have a good overall understanding,
and more specifically, have a team that can rely heavily
on one.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Side of the football at the job done.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
I don't know what else you need to see to
understand that that is the goat of Houston Texans football,
at least when it comes to coaching. So maybe I'm
alone on this. Take seven nine. He would love to
hear from you, But I do believe right now tomorrow,
when Damiko Ryans is in that locker room and telling
his team, we're one went away from guaranteeing having a
(12:21):
playoff berth maybe on the road, maybe at home. Maybe
we'll be lucky to see a team like Jacksonville lose,
which they should, but regardless, they will now be in
the driver's seat to have a shot to host a
playoff game. Everyone in this city should all agree the
man leaving the charge into the final two games of
the regular season this holiday, of this upcoming holiday, is
(12:44):
the greatest coach to walk the face of NRG Stadium
because if he's delivered on so many spectrums, and on
top of that, he's put the team in a better
position than they've ever been before. Houston right now feels
like a playoff team, and you can believe that because
of what you got the man who's leaying the charge
seven one three, two one two five seven ninety. You
might crazy to have that take. I'm genuinely asking you, Frankie,
(13:06):
am I crazy to have that take? I want to
hear your opinion on this. When we get back for
the break, we let's a quick time out. When we
come back, Texans have an opportunity to do something crazy.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Here's the thing.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
Do I trust the Texans over certain teams in the NFC,
because right now that may end up being the reason
why they're not able to hoist up their first Lombardi Trophy.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
We staw something on Thursday night.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I'll explain why, even after a loss, the team that
finally stood in the Texans way Week one should still
be the favorite to hoist up the Lombardi Trophy. That
more one segment down seven more on the Horizon. Space
Saturday just getting underway right here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
(13:49):
Space A Saturday rolls right along here on Sports Talk
seven ninety, Cale Thompson and rocking with you until one
o'clock seven, one thirty two one two five seven ninety.
Good God, I am in a delightful mood. It's currently
nothing nothing. With six point thirty left in the first quarter,
Texas A and M versus Miami. Both teams have had
(14:09):
the ball one time. Both teams have punted a three
and out. For the Hurricanes, A and M actually got
within field goal range. A false start pushed them back.
They were gonna go for it on fourth down. They
now had their defense built them out of trouble. Let's
see what Marcel Reid and this high tempo passing attack
can do. You saw some movement, which is a good
thing if you're an Aggie fan, because.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
You really need to get sure that.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Guys like Mario Kraver and Casey Conceptsiom, we're gonna be
able to find creases in space they have Let's say
they can finish the drive seven one thirty two, one two, five,
seven to ninety. Okay, So the Texans I believe are
a favorite in the AFC to go to Santa Clara.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
I don't think I'm crazy for saying that.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
I also don't think I'm crazy for saying that there
are several teams that I could envision being able to
beat Houston if Houston has.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
A bad game plan.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Now, if Houston plays perfect the way that they did
offensively against Arizona and defensively how they done for most
of the year, the only way that they're not going
to the Super Bowl is because of a fluke incident
like a pick six at the worst ill advised time,
or a time expiring game winning field goal from somebody
who has been basically reading the script and said, oh,
(15:15):
this is where I finally wake up and choose violence,
Like that's what I see happening. But regardless, I feel
that way about the Texas. Frankie, Am I wrong to
not feel that way about Houston after what we have
seen the past seven weeks.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
I think you're on the money man, thank you.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
See, this is why we hire Frankie because if he
is going to brown nose the crap out of me
and just agree with everything that I say, like what
I'm about to say, which is not a shot at
Houston whatsoever. But I do believe and you could argue
with me if you want to. Seven one, two two
five seven ninety we saw the best Thursday night football
game in the last five years when the Seattle Seahawks
found a way to come back in overtime and dismantle
(15:50):
the Los Angeles Rams thirty eight thirty seven final score.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Oh good god, what a game.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
What a moment for the NFL, because if I think that,
we all saw two teams that very much controlled their
own destiny, needed to step on up and deliver, and
by the way, it did deliver on so many different ways.
How about we talk about the offensive personnel. So let's
start off with the winners, because that's how I like
to do with these shows. Seattle, they were at least
(16:16):
able to exercise the demon for enough when it came
to the status of one Sam Donald. So what do
we know about Sam Donald? Can anybody tell me he
can't win the big one? Like he's a cool story.
He's been able to be in terrible situations, whether that's
new York.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
He gets Mono, he's seeing ghosts.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
He's not able to deliver in the Big Apple, so
he goes down to Carolina Carolina, he has one good
game against his former team, he craps the bed there.
He goes out to San Francisco, hits reset, becomes a
backup for Minnesota. They want to go ahead and trust
JJ McCarthy. McCarthy gets hurt, leads a team to a
fifteen and two record, but when the critical moments come
at the season's end, they can't beat Detroit. Therefore their
(16:56):
wild card team despite sitting at fifteen and two and
having the second best record in the NFC. And then
they go face off against a team that was supposed
to be in Los Angeles but instead it's in Glendale
and he absolutely looks like hot dog water. It's crappy
as all hell, so we can't win the big game.
He can't get the job done, signs a massive deal
worth over one hundred million to go to Seattle and
once again looks good in games that don't have a
(17:19):
lot of meaning behind it, but in a matchup that
could determine are you playing at home? Are you going
to be in the playoffs? You don't have a good performance.
Two interceptions, including one iside the red zone that was
ultimately a drive killer and looked like to be the
nail in the coffin. So we all already have the
narrative started. Well, the narrative got to change because of
(17:40):
one critical stop defensively, and then you see the offense
start to hum properly. Two great drives, a incredibly what
I consider to be e egregious two point conversion that
was called a backward pass, but it really was a
backward pass too have been moving forward, finds a way
to bounce to the end zone Jack Zach Charbonay at
(18:01):
the right place, at the right time. That is what
ends up being the storyline to put the game as
a tie. You go to overtime because Harrison MeVis misses
the kick, both teams find their way into the end zone,
and then a two point conversion caused by a former
Houston Texan Eric Sobert. Guess what that's why the tech
I mean, the Seahawks find a way to get a
win and punch their ticket to the playoff. They're still
(18:22):
sitting with the first place record in the NFC at
twelve and three, so that was the first thing I
took away. This is a dangerous Seahawks team that has
now shown you that they can win in multiple facets
and Sam Darnold can actually win the big one. Now,
does that mean he is going to on the brightest
stage in a single elimination matchup against say, Los Angeles again, Detroit,
(18:45):
Maybe you could throw in the Chicago Bears.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
I want to see it one more time. But I
can't say that he at least he's done it. We
can't use the narrative of well, he's never done it before,
so therefore, why are we doubting him, because at least
he's shown you that it could be possible. But I
still look at the other side of things, and that's
the Los Angeles Rams. And I got into an argument
with somebody at Texans practice on Friday, not because if
I don't appreciate their opinion. I do, I really do,
(19:12):
But I think that there is a clear indication that
the Texans, for as good as they are and how
well they've been playing over the last six weeks, which
they have, I want to make that abutantly clear. The
Los Angeles Rams still to me, when playing better defensively,
which is a big if.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Feel like the team to be ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
I don't know many rosters that find a way to
put up over five hundred and forty yards of offense
and still lose a football game. I don't know many
teams that win the turnover battle three to nothing, win
the time of possession by over six minutes, are better
on third down, are better inside the red zone, are
able to capitalize with scoring drives, and have a wide
(19:54):
receiver go off for two hundred and twenty five yards
and still find a way to lose a football game.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
That's what you would call.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
In my opinion, sheer dumb luck. And that was unfortunately
the reality for the Seattle before we did Los Angeles Ramps,
who now sit at eleven them four. I still think
that if you were to be a betting man today,
the Los Angeles Rams against the Houston Texans in a
rematch of Week one would probably have the victory. Because
(20:24):
I'm gonna say something that is very controversial to some
people in the city, and.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
I'm okay with it.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
That's why you get to call on this show and
argue with me. This is your therapy. It's an opportunity
for you to be able to let your opinions be heard.
Even with the Daria Gumbalwali fumble, even though the score
said it was seventeen ten. I don't think that the
Texans find a way to win a Week one in
a rematch against these two teams. If somehow, some way
(20:49):
Pukinakua once again has a moment where he just goes
on off like he did in Week one, because a
lot of people forget about that game, finish the day
with ten catches for over one hundred yards David's winning
to the end zone, but three plays of over fifteen
yards Downdfield. If he does that exact same thing, guess
what happens. I think that Los Angeles wins. I think
Los Angeles wins by at least seven, if not ten.
(21:10):
They feel like the team to beat. Even in a loss,
I still feel confident that the Rams are the team.
If the Texans were to face off against them in
the playoffs, it would cost them an opportunity to now
not win their first Lombardi Trophy. Doesn't mean that they
can't do it, but I would feel more confident in
almost anybody else facing off against them.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
That's just my opinion. That's where I stand on it.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
That was a game to where I saw both teams
that beat Houston in different ways. One trusting its defense
to be able to build them out of trouble, one
being able to have just enough offensively with David Sallin
into the.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
End zone to get a win.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
And the other team that really was able to take
control with a lot of three and outs, capitalize on
short field position and punch their way into the end zone.
You need your defense to get a strip sack in
the end zone against Sam Donald to even find some
off to even find some scoring opportunities. You made like
a forty yard play that was actually only a four
yard touchdown to Woody Marks to make this thing an
(22:11):
interesting matchup where it wasn't a double digit win. These
are two teams that I think handle business against Houston.
These are the two teams that right now, if you
were to face off against Houston and Santa Clara, I
would probably bet against them.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
And that's it. That's what I learned on Thursday night. Now,
there are some faults for these teams.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
If you're able to be able to shut down Sam
Donald in the first half, force him to be playing
from behind. Like, if you're up by fourteen, you have
three sacks, one of which is a pick six. I
feel pretty good if you're Houston, because all you have
to do with your offense is be able to get
into Kayimi fairband field goal range and live out to
that marker. What we continuously say, you get to twenty,
you're probably winning. I'm not saying that you're absolutely winning,
(22:51):
but you could be winning. You should be winning a
football game. And now if you allow Sam Darnald to
go ahead and cook, you allow to start figuring out
what you're gonna be able to make in places in
the open field. With guys like JSN, guys like Tory
Horton tight end playing Zach Scharbinette Kenneth Walker, that run
defense starts to be a little bit obsolete. You see
a little cracks in the mirror, then I believe at
(23:13):
that point, maybe say alas gonna win. But if you
shut down Sam Darnold early, your offense comes and delivers
just enough, you gotta feel good. I don't know if
you could trust this defense for Los Angeles to be
able to shut things down as much as I don't
know if you have a consistent number two weapon, because
if there are some things that Dalton Schaltz does that
just says, well, he's gonna get a lot of targets,
(23:33):
what does he do after those targets. That's a key
question here. You got Nico Collins and then insert who.
That might be something that we had to discuss, But
for the most part, I feel like that if Houston
is able to go capitalized with big explosive plays the
way that Puku Nakue capitalizes the biggest post place number twelve,
number twelve on both sides.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
You feel pretty confident.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
At least you feel like that this is a team
that is going to be able to put up points
and keep this thing going. If there are some faults
definitely in this in this Los Angeles defense, in the secondary,
specifically great defensive line that could be able to shut
down Ariante ursery in the interior pass rush that's going
to put pressure on CJ. Stroud, We're gonna see more
of regression that we watched in week one. But if
(24:15):
you're able to go ahead and build a rapport down
field the explosives, Houston may stand a shot. But you
also have to go ahead and shut down an offense
that's been able to make plays, and even with your
top tier defense, there are some questions there simply are
because if you do have an MVP standing on the
other sideline. So the entire point is that the Texans
have an opportunity to go ahead and punch their ticket
(24:37):
to the super Bowl. And I will one hundred percent
believe with they win on Sunday, they've done everything possible
to guarantee that they should be considered a favorite in
the AFC. They should and nobody should be arguing against
that because if they've proven offensively, there's enough of a
spark to where you can trust what's going on with
(24:58):
Nick Cayley running the show. Not enough to say that
you're elite, but enough to say, hey, we got the
job done. We're pretty good at this. Defensively, you're one of,
if not the best teams. But there are still some
faults to where you look at those two teams that
played at Lumen Field on Thursday night and say to yourself,
(25:19):
that seems to be the standard in the NFL. From
an NFC standpoint, if San Francisco or Chicago or Detroit
or Philadelphia, they're able to pull off what I would
consider to be the upsets of the of the postseason.
Then Houston has a very good shot of winning its
first Lombardi Trophy. I think that right now Seattle still
is vulnerable, but I would lean in favor of the
(25:41):
Seahawks finally being able to get their first titles since
the Legion of Boom days. I guarantee right now, if somehow,
some way, whoever is the guy, it could be Houston,
could be Buffalo, could be Baltimore, could be New England,
Denver for that matter, we get a rematchine what we
saw in twenty thirteen. Whoever is standing on that line
in Santa Clara against the Los Angeles Rams team even
(26:04):
after a loss, with your MVP quarterback, with a good
offensive line, with the ability to trust your run game,
a coach who has been there, done that before, and
a defense that has a great front, seven questions on
the secondary, but not enough to go ahead and say, hey,
you're really bad, You're probably gonna win that game. Seven
one three, two, one two five seven ninety. My crazy
(26:25):
for saying that. I believe right now as much as
I do think that the Texans could make a run
to the Super Bown. Should you give me Los Angeles?
You give me Seattle? I trust them just a little
bit more. Take quick time out when we come back.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
Astros make a trade, big, big, big trade.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
How do we feel about it? How do we feel
about the future of this team? What now is the
target for Dana Brown going into the holiday season?
Speaker 1 (26:48):
What do you want for Christmas? Underneath your Astros tree?
Speaker 3 (26:51):
All that more on a space CEA Saturday coming up
next right here on Sports Talk seven ninety fifteen minutes
down and we have a score update from Kyle Field.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Texas fighting A and m Aggie's nothing,
Miami Hurricanes nothing.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Fifteen minutes into this game.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Defenses have delivered on both spectrums, nearly a really bad
fumble by Casey Concepcion on a putt return that does
not happen. Anybody who has watched A and M play
this year seven has been elite in that category. In fact,
there was a game against LSU that he scored three
touchdowns in a span of five minutes. Like you understand
that this dude is just built different. He is quite
(27:34):
literally the X factor I think for A and M
in this game. So now knowing that he had a
really bad play, maybe momentum starts to swing just a
little bit more in favor of the Hurricanes.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
But it is a space.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Say Saturday right here on Sports Talk seven ninety Cole
Thompson rock with Chew until one o'clock seven one three, two,
one two five seven to ninety Texans ten wins whin tomorrow.
That's a guarantee college football playoff delivered last night, Norman,
after Alabama came back down seventeen to nothing, and it's
quite literally delivering for different reasons out Kyle Field and
(28:08):
the Astros make a trade to better their bullpens last rotation.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
Let's talk about it. Seven one thirty two two five,
seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
So for all of you who were under a rock yesterday,
weren't paying attention to what was going on in the
diamond world, wasn't paying attention to what's going on in
the MLB free agency. The Astros have made a move.
Mike Burrows from the Pittsburgh Steelers is headed to Houston.
In return, Jacob Melton and Anderson Britto are leaving to
(28:37):
go to the Tampa Bay Rays. Now you're asking yourself, well,
Mike Burrows didn't play for Tampa. Right, you are correct,
he did not play for Tampa. He played for Pittsburgh.
Guess what Pittsburgh then added in Brandon Law who was
a name that was brought up for the For the Astros,
he is now going to be playing at PNC Park,
adding in thirty home runs for a roster that is
trying to prove that they can spend money. And a
(29:00):
couple of prospects are also going back in favor of Tampa.
So what do we make of this deal?
Speaker 1 (29:04):
In general?
Speaker 3 (29:05):
For the Astros, you get a pitcher who just turned
twenty six, posted a three point nine to four er
in the last ninety six innings of his rookie season
in twenty twenty five. He's got control for the next
six years, which is good. He's not gonna be able
to hit free agency until twenty thirty two. So if
he ends up meeting expectations, whether that be as a
long term reliever, as a number four starter, as a
(29:26):
number three starter, and with this pitching staff that does
a good job of developing talent, you think that you
may have landed a seal. Now I'm gonna do what
I always do, and I'm gonna say I'll wait until
I figure out how this is going to.
Speaker 1 (29:39):
Work out now for the long term.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
But you're landing a player then at least puts you
in a position where you say that dude's gonna be
a part of the twenty six man or elster next season.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
He's gonna add value, whether.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
That be for six innings or five innings or three innings,
because if he'll be a part of the team, and
it does shore up at least an area that we
thought was a weakness going into the year for pitch Arsenal.
Really good fastball, really good changeup, really good opportunity to
be a name that we see grow and flourish as
the next foundational piece for a new run of Astros players. Now,
(30:13):
I will say this on the flip side, this is
the big time move that the Astros fans are waiting for.
This is the thing that everyone is sitting around and saying, Okay,
we've been waiting, we've been needing a gotta have moment.
Mike Burrows is not the move that gets you excited.
I'm sorry it doesn't. It's cool that you write it
in a pitcher. It's great that now you at least
(30:33):
feel like there's there's a name that can be competitive
alongside an H. Bluebaugh, alongside of Spencer Eric Getty, alongside
even a Lance McCullers, several others out there. It's great
that you have that guy, but this is not the
move that you're saying. Yep, right back in the hunt
for now a division title, right alongside Tampa. I mean,
as Seattle, better than Texas, better than Las Vegas or
(30:55):
whatever the hell that team is out in Sacramento, better
than teams in the American League. We're right deck in
the conversation. You're not like, that's not the surprising move
that's gonna put you over the top.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
It just isn't. I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
If you want to go ahead and say that it is,
that's great for you. But I gotta see a little
bit more. I can't be sitting here and saying you're
adding in a young pitcher that has years of control,
that still had almost a four era is the reason
why now we're believing that Houston is right back in
the conversation.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
So now you gotta make some moves?
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (31:25):
In the pitching side?
Speaker 3 (31:26):
Absolutely, I still think that you need to add in
at least one more guide to the rotation, probably someone
who's a little bit better than Burroughs. Now, does that
mean that you gotta go swing big for like a
Ranger Suarez knowing that there are going to be some
lucrative deals being handed on out and the names that
we're seeing get these big time deals probably not like that.
Anybody watches the Atlanta Braves sign Hasse king Kim coming
(31:49):
off of an injured plague season.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
Anybody know what he got? Twenty million annually?
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Twenty million annially for a dude who played less than
one hundred games and still was not valuable defensively and
probably hits somewhere in that two sixteen range, number four,
number five in their lineup at best.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
I mean, I worset I would say number seven.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
Twenty million annually. Is that what you want for somebody
that you think can be a difference maker? I wouldn't,
But that's gonna be the going rate for a lot
of free agents this year.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
So what does that mean?
Speaker 3 (32:18):
You got to be able to bring in someone who
you think is a cheaper, more team fromdly option that
still provides that consistency when it comes to your rotation.
Zach Eflin comes to mind. I would probably lean Justin
Verlander on a one year, fourteen million dollars deal. It's
gonna happen, whether we want to admit it or not.
It may come in February instead of in January, it
may not come until after we get into spring training.
(32:40):
But regardless, I do think that you will see Justin
Verlander come back. Can you bring in somebody else that
at least situates yourself in a position to where you
feel confident. The second thing is is that at least
now what you bring in Burrows, you have to be
able to bring in an outfielder too. Now, the reason
I say you got to bring in an outfielder, it's
not because of I think that the Astros are built
(33:00):
to be able to have all these conversations of who
do we go ahead and throw in left field? Because
you may have a left fielder in Hayesu Sanchez, go
ahead and say the exact same thing about Yainer Diaz,
say the exact same thing about Christian Walker. Really, anybody
out there that struggled last season, bad hitting coach team
needed to go ahead and make a switch on the
offensive side. You bring in a guy from San Diego.
(33:20):
You bringing in a ton of new names. They now
put themselves in a spot to where we're gonna give
you a mulligan.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
Let's see what you do.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
Because Christian Walker did have power and was really consistent
when he signed on the dotted line from Arizona. He
felt pretty good about where you were with Jesus Sanchez
when he signed, I mean when you traded for him
from Miami, because you did. He was a really good
player Offensively, he was hitting the long ball out in Miami,
had a really struggling position for the last fifty games
of the year with Houston.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
So does he go ahead and hit reset, But he.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Still think that you needed an outfielder because of let's
just say, for some reason, you're not able to go
ahead and get the same results that you saw out
in Miami.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
Okay, well, at least got bring somebody else in.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
You lose a guy in Jacob Melton, who, let's just
call it as is, probably had played enough for the
Astros to realize you're gonna be a part of the team,
but you're not a game changer.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
We like Zach Cole a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
Look at that one thing he's got to be going
guess who goods sided to get the short end of
the stick. Welcome to Tampa. Best of your luck in
your future endeavors, but you still need to be able
to add an outfielder. As for the Pirates, I actually
like this deal a lot. You're putting your money where
your mouth is enough to say, we have got to
be able to prove to Paul Schemes and a lot
of these young core players that we think are going
(34:33):
to be difference makers.
Speaker 1 (34:34):
We're trying to win.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
We may not be trying to consistently put you on top,
but we are trying to win football games. We simply are,
I mean baseball games. Guess what now you feel like
that she got that? Because if you're adding into Brandon Low,
guy hits thirty home runs per year, guy who's gonna
be a great part of your lineup at the number
three spot, maybe the number two spot, all things that
(34:56):
are necessary to see just called as is, so we'll
go there to begin things right. As for the Astros, again,
it's another win. You bring in a picture that you
think can be great on the back end of your rotation,
maybe just maybe also pretty good when it comes to
a part of the bullpen, but it doesn't stop you
(35:17):
from adding in names.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Unles's just call it as is.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Did any of you think that Jacob Mountain was gonna
be breaking the opening day lineup? Or did you think
that he was gonna be starting the year off in Sugarland?
If you answered a, good for you, that means that
Zach Cole probably would have been moved. And if you
answered B, well, then that's why you know that he's
going off to Tampa. You didn't feel confident enough that
he was going to be a major part of your
roster long term, So you go ahead and hit reset
(35:39):
to bring in somebody that you think can be a
factor for this season for twenty twenty eight, twenty nine,
twenty thirty, twenty thirty one, twenty thirty two before he
hits free agency. That's just kind of where you are,
and you're getting yourself a very good up and coming
player who may end up being a name that changes the.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Way about your rotation.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
But that doesn't stop you going ahead and saying, yep,
look at what has happened around the American League. There
are teams that feel pretty confident about what they've added
in this offseason to take that next jump forward.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
Ashes haven't done that, in my opinion, They've.
Speaker 3 (36:10):
Done enough to be able to say, Okay, cool, we
added in a player for a guy that we know
is not a part of our plan past twenty twenty five.
Let's go ahead and at least feel like that's going
to be a win for the short term. You still
got to add in more pitching. You still got to
add in another piece when it comes to the offense personnel.
You still got to ask the question, what do you
do about the infield conundrum with East sac Paretes Christian Walker,
(36:33):
Jeremy Pania, Jose al Tuve, because you still have that
flag that is going to be a fault of the team.
You just do.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
But at least you made a move. Is it the
biggest move of the day.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
Absolutely not, But a move is a move, and people
have been waiting to see what the Ashers are going
to do. Now you feel pretty confident that, hey, maybe
this is the start of something promising. Seven one two,
one two five seven to ninety one hour down, one
hour to go. Currently the Aggies are about to take
a three nothing lead with eleven fifty remaining in this matchup.
(37:08):
Jared Zirkle up for a fifty yard kick, I mean
a forty yard kick. What does this mean for Texas
A and M to get a win over Miami in
the college football playerf And what did we win this
last night as Alabama was able to take control? That
more coming on up as the college football Playoff is
still underway, and we're in a way right here on
a space Day Saturday, Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
Here seven nineties, Cole Thompson.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
It could only happen to Texas A and M and
the College Football Playoff the only team it could happen too,
because no one else would find a way on the
biggest stage with the chip shot to take a three
to nothing lead and guarantee that they have the momentum
going into the second quarter, find a way to get
a kick blocked inside the red zone. It's still nothing
(37:58):
nothing ten left in the first half as Miami now
is rolling its second and eleven at midfield. Block kicked
by the Hurricanes now puts them in a position to
where they can take the advantage and welcome on in
to hour number two of a space City Saturday right
here on Sports Talk seven to ninety Cole tops in
rock with you until one o'clock seven one three two
(38:19):
one two five seven ninety. College Football Playoff delivered last night.
Alabama scores thirty four unanswered points to shut up Notre
Dame fans, shut up the College Football Playoff Committee, and
prove that Kaylin Debor is not on his way to
ann Arbor.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
He's sticking around in Tuscaloosa.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
The Astros make a trade to bring in Mike Burrows,
moving off of Jacob Melton, pirates Land Brandon Lao to
hopefully put themselves in a better position in the NL Central,
and the Texans have an opportunity to guarantee a third
straight ten win season underneath Demko Ryans seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. Let's talk about your
Texans real fast. So I have a theory that has
(38:56):
been on my mind for the last two days. I
brought this up on Friday, did not get the feedback
that I was looking for. So I throw it to you,
ladies and gentlemen. Would love to be able to get
your input. How do you feel about this take? The
Texans are going to win. They are going to win
tomorrow over a team that is currently fighting for the
number one overall seed. In fact, for my money, you
(39:18):
can tell me that teams are never going to openly tank,
and I absolutely believe you because of if they did that,
Bryce Show would be suiting on up for the Texans
tomorrow and c. J. Stodd be playing the Charlotte That's
just the bottom line. But instead Davis Mills is able
to connect with Jordan Akins in the end zone against
Indianapolis and you get the number two pick instead of
number one overall because if you never openly tank, I
(39:40):
don't think you have to openly take in this game.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Las Vegas isn't good offensively.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
It's the second time heading into tomorrow that they will
be a team that has finished with under one hundred
toty yards of offense, a second time that a team
has been outscored thirty plus to nothing. You could say
the exact same thing against the number one scoring defense.
So the Texans are going to find a way to
win tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
I get it.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
You have Ashton Genty, you have Rock Bowers, you got
Trey Tucker, really good player who I actually would love
to see go off that way, I could stay alive
in the playoffs just a little bit longer for one
of my leagues because he's like my third wide receiver
and the rest of my team is dogwater.
Speaker 1 (40:16):
But regardless, Texans are going to win.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
Would they win tomorrow, Houston would have thirty victories in
three years underneath Tamiko Ryans. That would make him the
fastest coach to get to the thirty win marker in
franchise history.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
They're not a playoff team just yet.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
But if they were to win, according to the New
York Times playoff predictor, Houston would be in the postseason
ninety nine point nine percent. They would need a ton
of chaos, including two losses and a few upset wins
to guarantee that they are on the outside looking income
January fifteenth, So the Texans are probably going to be
in the playoff tomorrow. That to me means that at
(40:55):
this point Tamiko Ryans has earned the conversation to be
called the greatest coach in franchise history. Now I understand
what a lot of people are going to say, How
can you jump to that conclusion, Cole, when you've only
seen one data point over three years, get to ten wins,
be able to put up decent numbers, find a way
to win in the wild card round, just like Bill O'Brien,
(41:17):
just like Gary Kubiak, no shot of being able to
say that you can go face off against a team
in the conference championship because, much like Gary Kubiak, much
like Bill O'Brien, this is a Texans team that falls
short the division round.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
I get what you're saying on that standpoint, so I
want to go a step further.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
When the Texans in twenty eleven went twelve and five
underneath Gary Kubiak, they had a solid defense top fifteen
in a lot of categories, top ten in most categories,
and an overall offense that was moving and grooving behind
Arian Foster having decent play from Andre Johnson, top fifteen,
scoring offense top ten, rushing offense top five, and pass protection.
(41:53):
Good team overall. The year before they were middle of
the pack and everything. After twenty twelve they were mild
the pack and everything overall seventeenth and so were scoring offense,
I think there were eleventh and passing offense. They were
eighteenth in scoring defense. They were fourteenth in total yards alloted. Defensively,
(42:13):
they were mid when it came to third nine conversions.
They a lot explosive plays, a lot of things that
did not go in their favor, so ultimately they were
another run of the mill team. The Texans, with the
way that they've been playing defensively, have an opportunity to
post back to back years underneath their defensive mind a
head coach, a top ten finish in every single defensive
(42:37):
metric back to back years.
Speaker 1 (42:39):
Don't believe me? Okay, well, let's start.
Speaker 3 (42:41):
Texans last season ranked number eleven I mean, number nine
in points per game. At twenty one point nine, they
ranked number five in points I mean in yards per game,
three hundred and fifteen passing yards per game, number six,
two hundred and one point two rush yards per game,
right outside the top ten, number eleven in one hundred
(43:03):
and fourteen point zero yards per game. Now, let's look
at twenty fifteen rushing yards per game. They are one
of three teams that currently are giving up ninety one
yards or fewer. Denver and Jacksonville are the only teams
that can say they have a better result because of that.
Passing yards per game Houston's fourth one's seventy six point
five total yards per game. Houston leads the pack at
(43:24):
two hundred and sixty nine point two and current pat
total points per game. The only team that's even close
to them is the Seattle Seahawks that gave up thirty
eight points on Thursday against the Los Angeles Ramps Houston.
Since at sixteen and three, sixteen point three, you're talking
about a defense headlined by a defensive guru who's been
(43:45):
able to right the ship, see the error of his
ways from the first season, go realize, you know what,
We're gonna put a lot of extensive thought process on
our defense delivering and we're going to be able to
shut teams down, make them obsolete in one dimensional and
play with the theory of let's just get to twenty.
Speaker 1 (44:02):
That's not always a winning formula.
Speaker 3 (44:04):
It sometimes feels like a crappy formula, but you'll take
easily twenty points that you feel good enough to be
able to go ahead and win a football game. If
you do that, guess what, lo and behold, you probably
are going to be able to march your way to
a victory.
Speaker 1 (44:16):
Texas have done that.
Speaker 3 (44:17):
The Texans also now have been able to play against
every single team that has out there, whether it be
a playoff caliber roster, a team fighting for a for
a number one overall, pick a team that is just
run of the mill and they've delivered over the seven
game win streak, and they did so without having some
of their key players or at least the factors that
you believed were going to be reasons why your team.
Speaker 1 (44:36):
Was so successful. We talked about this earlier in the week.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
There wasn't an MVP in Davis Mills, but there was
a turning point moment where Mills in the fourth quarter
was able to lead a team down sixteen points, come
on back, put themselves ahead, and then Sheldon Rankins, just
for good measure, gets an interception against Trevor Lawrence find
his way into the end zone. We see a fat
Man touchdown, and momentum swings in in favor of the Texans.
(45:01):
As now they're sitting with a win, and then they
start rattling off more wins and they beat up on
a playoff team emphatically. In the Buffalo Bills second half,
seven sacks against a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
That's an MVP.
Speaker 3 (45:14):
You go on into arrowhead, you're able to shut down
Patrick Mahomes and you take away his number one element,
which is Travis Kelce. The only thing that he can
do is listen to the sweet saltary tunes of his
girlfriend or his fiance, Taylor Swift, and you're able to
now feel as if you've taken the next step forward.
You come back home, you deliver against a team that
right now has no momentum, even though you did to
(45:35):
give up twenty one points to in my opinion, the
greatest tight end currently in the league. But you're in
a good spot. The Texans at this point have answered
every single question that you have about where they have
been over the last three years. It's a culmination leading
up to this team finally meeting the expectations. And here's
(45:55):
something that I never thought that I would say in
my last twenty two years of watching Texans football.
Speaker 1 (46:03):
I believe that they are a front runner to actually
win the whole dang thing.
Speaker 3 (46:08):
Now. I don't know if they'll be able to win
a Lombardi Trophy, simply because of there's so many things
that could go against them. On top of that, you
never know who you're facing off against in the Super Bowl.
But in the AFC, who do you fear like quite nearly,
who do you fear to be able to go ahead
and say this is why we're gonna be kept on
out of playing in our first conference championship New.
Speaker 1 (46:30):
England, I wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (46:32):
Eventually the other shoe is going to drop like it
did for Houston in twenty twenty three. I compare Houston
a lot to that team that we saw in twenty
twenty three, because I truly believe that the Texans that
season were a good roster, but they played a fourth
place schedule, quarterback played with momentum. Eventually they had to
face off against a team that had the been there,
(46:52):
done that mentality.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
That's going to be in New England Denver.
Speaker 3 (46:55):
You're relying so heavily consistently on fourth quarter comebacks and
your defense bailing you out of trouble. So I think
the same thing could happen once again. What about Baltimore,
They still have some questions offensively, They definitely are missing
things on the defensive side. And I don't think that Pittsburgh,
outside of the yearly tradition of going ten and seven
(47:17):
and losing in the first round of the playoffs, offers.
Speaker 1 (47:20):
Little to no value.
Speaker 3 (47:21):
The Chargers are banged up offensively, they got a defense
they'll probably keep them in games. But I'm not putting
my faith in Justin Harbert when I've seen him crap
the bet in the playoffs having a three touchdown lead
and then the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yeah, hate to be the
bearer bad news. I cannot stand the fact that right
now they are in a position to where you believe
(47:42):
that they're a team that you think is going to
be able to turn the corner.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
So I'm sorry on that standpoint.
Speaker 3 (47:47):
Overall, I think this is a Texans team that is
going to be able to punch their ticket deep into
the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (47:54):
And that's because of who you have as head coach.
Speaker 3 (47:56):
When I look at this Texans organization, you think Demiko
Ryans for being able to put himself in a position
to where you believe he is now standing on business
and he is the greatest coach in program history. Seven one, three, two, two, five,
seven ninety to quick time out and we come back.
Let's talk about the college football playoff Alabama delivered last night.
(48:16):
Does that mean that they are a guaranteed show in
to be in the postseason? Conversation and what does this
mean for the future of the playoff that much more
coming on up on space Cy Saturday right here, Sports
Talk seven to ninety. I have a genuine, genuine question
to anybody who's listening out there who wants to win
a coll field.
Speaker 1 (48:36):
Today, Anybody, anybody who's want to get some points.
Speaker 3 (48:40):
By the way, if you took the over of this game,
I am so sorry. You're gonna be lucky if this
ends with a seven to nothing win on one side. Currently,
A and M has missed because of a block field
goal inside of their own red zone, and Miami wants
to go with the long ball. Guess what right outside
to the right nothing thing heading into the final five
(49:01):
minutes of the second quarter, and this is a space
city Saturdy Micole Thompson as we roll along A and
M versus Miami looking for a shot to head to
Arlington to take on number two Ohio.
Speaker 1 (49:12):
State and the Cotton Bowl.
Speaker 3 (49:13):
Meanwhile, your Astros make a trade for Mike Burrows to
bolster up either the back end of their rotation or
their bullpen, trading away two prospects in return, including Jacob
Melton to the Tampa Bay Rays, and your Texans looking
to guarantee a third straight double digit win season. Underneath,
to Meiko Ryans, who I believe is going to prove
he is the goat coach in franchise history. Seven to
(49:35):
one to three, two on two, five, seven to ninety
as Marcel Reid, with three minutes and twenty three seconds left,
picks up a first down trying to guarantee that the
Aggies are on top heading into the second half. Okay,
college football playoff, Oh boy, ladies and gentlemen. I am
beyond exciting to talk about this because of I had
far too much fun last night dealing with the morons,
(49:58):
the nitwitz and the people who think that they.
Speaker 1 (50:01):
Know ball when clearly they don't.
Speaker 3 (50:03):
Halfway through the Alabama Oklahoma game in the first round
of the playoff. Now there is I'm bringing this up.
It's not because I'm an Alabama grad. It has nothing
to do with that whatsoever. It has to do with
what I believe is the standpoint and the sanctity of
college football. So everyone remembers what the argument was just
a few weeks ago. Frankie, do you remember what the
big argument was in college football?
Speaker 1 (50:25):
I cannot recall. Okay, so Texas it I mean, so Alabama.
Speaker 3 (50:28):
They beat Georgia in the regular season, they're the number
one seed in the SEC. They go play it at
Lana and they then get dismantled, vamboozled, molly wobbed by
a team that is playing with house money and fire
to lose the SEC title. It's not even a game.
I can say this as somebody who loves the game
of football. It wasn't even close. Like you had three
(50:51):
drives and within the first fifteen minutes you knew the
game was going to be over. But Alabama got into
the playoff over noted name the Dane ends up sitting
in that number nine spot really the number ten spot,
and they watches Miami because of BYU loses in emphatic
fashion to Texas Tech jump in the rankings, therefore knocking
(51:16):
Notre Dame out of the playoff. So Alabama last night
ghost to Norman. They look dreadful in the first half.
I mean it was as bad as it could get.
Could have run the football for a second straight time
negative three rushing yards. Guys, how does that happen twice?
Like I'm just genuinely asking, how do you see a
game plan against a defense like Georgia and say, hey,
you know what, we can't run the football. Screw it,
(51:38):
Let's run it six times and still have the same
amount of negative yards that we had in Atlanta just
two weeks ago. How I genuinely ask you at that standpoint,
John Mattier gets a big time stop on third down,
He's able to find his way to the end zone.
You're able to get a horrendous punt off no offensive
execution from Tys Simpson. You jump up seventeen to nothing.
And then comes all of the people on Twitter, whether
(52:00):
you be from the national perspective, whether you be from
the Oklahoma perspective, the Alabama perspective, or the Notre Dame perspective,
and everyone said the exact same thing. Alabama does not
belonging to the college football playoff. Oh these teams stink. Really,
this is what we signed on up for to leave
(52:20):
Notre Dame on out of the postseason. This is why
we left the fighting Irish, a team that was playing
with house fire and looked like one of the six
best teams on the outside, to make sure that Alabama
couldn't deliver, to make sure that Oklahoma was gonna be
able to finally guarantee a win.
Speaker 1 (52:41):
And I say to myself, Okay, just remember this tweet.
Speaker 3 (52:45):
All these tweets in about ten minutes and I'm not
saying this as an Alabama grad. I'm saying this as
somebody who just wants people to remind themselves, Hey, guys,
it ain't over until the final bewl rnks. It is
so Alabama because of a fourth down call with the
I Gotta habit moment in the second quarter by an
(53:05):
aggressive coaching kayln Debor finds their way into the end zone.
Speaker 1 (53:08):
It's now seventeen to seven.
Speaker 3 (53:10):
A bad block punt by Oklahoma sets up Alabama at
the thirty. They get a field go off, and then
John Mattier and whoever was that wide receiver see no
way of recollection eye to eye, and Zabian Brown takes
it back to the house for a fifty yard touchdown
and going into halftime at seventeen seventeen. In a span
of eleven minutes, we see people tweeting about how Alabama
(53:34):
is a joke. Alabama should not be in the playoff.
Alabama looks like trash. Alabama should be sitting on the
outside looking in, and Notre Dame belongs on in over
both these teams to holy crap, Alabama might end up
winning this thing, and they did. They proceed to go
on a thirty four to seven run win by double
digits on the road, get revenge over the Sooners, finally
(53:56):
exercise the demons of being able to beat Oklahoma, and
now wait two weeks to face off against number one Indiana,
and I am going to have a very hostile household
because of as an Alabama grad, I am now not
allowed to talk to my father in Indiana grad who's
not been able to see his team make the college
football playoff more than once and they've yet to win
(54:16):
a playoff game. So I bring all this up because
of this is why I can't stand people talking about
college football, ladies and gentlemen. College football is the craziest
sport that ever has existed in the world of public entertainment.
It is because if in one breath you will see
(54:37):
eighteen have all the momentum to be able to punch
up and guarantee that they're leading by twenty plus points,
and in the next breath, you'll go to the fridge,
you'll go stop off and get lunch, and you'll come home.
You'll flip on the television and go, how in the
hell is it now a three point game? How did
they score twenty four unanswered points. They span seven minutes
(54:57):
to be able to put themselves ahead and now keep
all the momentum on their side.
Speaker 1 (55:02):
That doesn't happen in most sports.
Speaker 3 (55:03):
We don't see what we witnessed on Thursday night between
the Rockets and the Pelicans, where a twenty five point
lead is completely dissolved because if you just don't show
on up, teams are even ninety percent of the time.
And Alabama and Oklahoma both had faults which ultimately led
to one team playing like dogwater in the first quarter
(55:24):
and then finding a way to respond in the second quarter.
That's just the bottom line. Whether or not you want
to disagree with me, that's just the case. So I
saw all of those people and I had to go
it's time to go ahead and hit some retweets. It's
time to go ahead and make sure that you all
e crow And for a while at mister Cole Thompson,
you could see basically my Twitter feed was quite literally
(55:47):
worse than freezing cold takes. And I did that because
I want everyone to remember, think before you tweet, ladies
and gentlemen, think before you go ahead and put something
on the internet, because of while you may end up
being able to delete it.
Speaker 1 (56:03):
I'm gonna remember it forever.
Speaker 3 (56:04):
Those bookmarks are there for a reason, The snapshots are
there for a reason, and a lot of people looked
like idiots, morons and those who are non ball knowers
because you decide to count out Alabama early. You want
to know what Alabama did last night by winning against Oklahoma.
They answered the call of saying we belong in the
(56:25):
College Football Playoff. They put the SEC on notice saying
if you make it to your conference championship game, you're
not gonna be penalized for it if you lose big,
even if you are a team that shouldn't be in
the same conversation as a Georgia or an Ole Miss,
because teams like Texas A and M and Old Miss
sat idly at home while Alabama and Georgia were forced
(56:46):
to play a game to where if they lost, the
only thing that they were going to say in the
public eye is they deserve to be punished. Well. Alabama,
behind a two touchdown day and basically had the exact
same formula that Oklahoma did when they went to tusk Loosa,
found a way to deliver on the biggest stage, answering
the call that even with a bad loss, they still
(57:08):
were one of the twelve best teams in college football.
And all of you who decided to go ahead and
jump the gun and say they didn't belong in the
playoffs saying that, hey, how they looked against Georgia is
why they don't belong on in So spare me moving
forward when you go ahead and say, oh, well, I
didn't think that that was actually going to happen. Now,
(57:28):
it's okay, just say you don't know college football. This
is why I'm here to teach you guys about this sport.
Because if you have to realize, if you're gonna tweet
something moronic, you gotta go ahead and eat cro A
lot of Notre Dame fans this morning are waking up
realizing we jumped the gun. A lot of Oklahoma fans
this morning are waking up saying, how the hell did
(57:49):
we do this again?
Speaker 1 (57:51):
What is our problem?
Speaker 3 (57:52):
How are we known as Choklahoma versus actually the Boom
and Sooners. And then you have to look at the
national media who's said Alabama did not belong in the
college football playoff. Oh wait a minute, Yet somehow they
were able to respond down seventeen to nothing, win a
thirty four to seven differential over the final forty five minutes,
and punch their ticket to the next round, where there
(58:14):
are many people this morning saying, hey, don't let the
Crimson Tide get hot, because the second that they do,
they feel like they're going to be in charge of
every single step along the college football playoff bottom line,
if you want to tweet dumb stuff, get ready to
get caught on out by yours truly, because if I
had a lot of fun last night realizing how many
(58:37):
people think that they know football, and then realizing, oh no,
I now have to sit in the reality of my
own sweat, of my own swallow and understand I'm not
a ballover.
Speaker 1 (58:48):
Instead, I'm just a common casual.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
Seven one three two, one two five seven ninety thirty
two seconds left between Texas A and m and Miami
nothing nothing, Carson Beck looking for the deep shot down
the field, potentially going to be an interception.
Speaker 1 (59:03):
It is now fourth and eight.
Speaker 3 (59:05):
We may, we may, lays and gentlemen, see points occur
before halftime, and if we don't, well, that just shows
you that we're gonna be in a position to where
who the hell wants to win? This game.
Speaker 1 (59:17):
That does carry a lot of weight.
Speaker 3 (59:18):
Speaking of with what Carrie is also a lot of
weight is the Astros have made a move to better
their bullpen or their rotation. Do you feel good enough
about where they are right now heading into the holiday season.
I'll explain why not right here on Space City Saturday
next Sports Talk seven to ninety. I don't know if
(59:43):
I should be impressed or disappointed on what's going on
to com Field right now. So Carson Beck gets an
overturned play. They're now moving closer towards the red zone.
Two shots to the goal line both come up short.
Davis gets a kick for Miami to have an opportunity
to go three to nothing before the half wide right
for a second time. It is nothing nothing out at
(01:00:06):
Kyle Field. A somewhat defensive battle, also a special team
comedy of errors that has led both the Yaggies and
the Hurricanes to be scoreless.
Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
Going into halftime. What does that mean?
Speaker 3 (01:00:19):
Wellly got a brand new second half for two teams
that right now may have not to Dame argueig, why
the hell are we sitting at home in the playoff
because Alabama at least did its job.
Speaker 1 (01:00:28):
It is a space Day Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:00:29):
Right here on Sports Talk seven ninety, Cole Thomason rock
with you for another thirty minutes seven two one two
five seven ninety college football Playoff delivering on two different
ends where Alabama comes back down by seventeen to beat Oklahoma.
It is currently a scoreless affair out at Kyle Field.
You have two more games with Twulane and Ole Miss
Oregon versus JMU. I don't know what's gonna happen in
(01:00:52):
either of those two games. After what we've seen in
the last six quarters of college football. You have the
Texans looking to guarantee a double win season for the
third straight year underneath Tamiko Ryans. And how about the
Astros making a trade yesterday to bolster up their bullpen
or their rotation.
Speaker 1 (01:01:08):
And that's where I want to go.
Speaker 3 (01:01:09):
So for anybody who was sleeping under a rock, or
doing Christmas shopping, or was this busy out with life,
and I get that there are things going on that
don't really surround the world of baseball or sports in general.
In the month of December, I can get behind that
the Astros finally made a trade. Mike Burrows, the twenty
six year old from Pittsburgh is headed to Houston and
(01:01:31):
in return, prospects Jacob Meltin and Anderson Brito are.
Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
Headed over to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Speaker 3 (01:01:37):
Now, many of you were asking yourself, but Burrows played
for the Pittsburgh Pirates, right, you are correct, which is
why the Pirates acquired second basement Brandon Law, outfielder Jacob
Magnum and Mason Montgomery from Tampa as part of the
deal to go ahead and land two premiere players, thus
for allowing Burrows to come on down to Houston. So
what do we make of this deal in general? Well,
(01:01:58):
let's start off with Burrows. Burls is twenty six years old.
He had a three nine to four e in ninety
six innings in his rookie season. Very young, up and
coming prospect who could fit in as a back end
rotation guy.
Speaker 1 (01:02:09):
Maybe he gets up to.
Speaker 3 (01:02:10):
The number three role. Maybe he is a long term reliever.
But the thing that you can like about him is
not his age, but his control. He's not gonna become
arbitration available until twenty twenty nine, which basically means you
get three years of being able to kind of work
everything in your favor. Number two if he ends up
being a really good player. He ain't hit in the
open market till twenty thirty two. That means that you
(01:02:32):
got somebody who can be a valuable asset to your
rotation or to your bullpen for the next five to
six years.
Speaker 1 (01:02:39):
So automatically, that's a win.
Speaker 3 (01:02:40):
The other thing is it allows you to feel better
about where you are when it comes to the competition
of your team and also just the overall identity of
your roster going into spring training when it comes to
your pitching staff. The Astros last season killed it when
it came to finding names on the open market, whether
it be Jason Alexander or Caleb or or you could
(01:03:00):
throw into Steven Okert.
Speaker 1 (01:03:02):
That's just what they do. Brian King for another example,
That's just what they do. Like that's the thing that
you can always trust.
Speaker 3 (01:03:08):
Like I know that that McDonald's is going to have
the best French fries that ever exist in fast food.
Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
I can trust that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:14):
I can trust, like Matt Thomas, that the mcgribbs sandwich
is going to deliver even when it is only around
for a grand total of ninety days per year. I
can trust that I can trust the Astros. We'll get
the best version out of their pitchers. Regardless of how
you find them on the open market, through the minor
league system via trades, they end up panning on out.
(01:03:35):
And we started learning about this with Yusa Kakuchi a
few years ago when he ended up being the reason
why Houston punched its ticket back to the postseason.
Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
So I like the move in that standpoint.
Speaker 3 (01:03:45):
When it comes to Mike Burrows, I also understand why
you got to move off of Jacob Melton. Now I'm
not saying that Melton couldn't have been a part of
the roster, but let me ask you guys something. When
I say the word Jacob Melton, what's the first thing
that comes to your mind? Go ahead, let me not
five seven ninety. We'd love to hear from you first
thing that comes to your mind. I'll tell you what
(01:04:05):
comes to my mind.
Speaker 1 (01:04:07):
Player.
Speaker 3 (01:04:08):
He's a guy you no name, just just somebody who's
a part of the rotation. Somebody who's a part of
the roster you wanted.
Speaker 1 (01:04:15):
What that means. They're expendable. I don't view them as
part of the long term plan.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
And when you look at Zach Cole and you look
at him and you say, okay, we gotta let go
of one, we're keeping the other. It feels pretty clear
that while Zach Cole may have his limitations, he may
not end up being much.
Speaker 1 (01:04:32):
He basically is just Jacob Meltin, So one of them
can go out the door.
Speaker 3 (01:04:36):
And I think the same thing goes for Anderson Brido,
who you may miss because if he is again a pitcher,
a young guy with control, but regardless, you're bringing in
a name that at least has some experience put him
in the right system. You feel confident about where you
are with him being a part of the rotation for
at least this year, if not longer. So in all
those standpoints, it's a move to where you feel good.
(01:04:57):
If you are the Astros, that's a win. You gave
up pieces that you thought, Okay, they're not gonna be
here long term. They're not gonna be focal points for
this season and pass this year, so we're gonna end
up bringing a name that betters our.
Speaker 1 (01:05:11):
Roster for the short and the long term. So that,
I'm eactly is a win.
Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
Now when you look at it from the long term
perspective for the Astra, I mean for the short term
perspective of the Astros, And from the general standpoint of
where you are going into the holiday season, is your
wishless complete if you are Astros clause if you are
looking for a jolly old Saint Dana Brown to go
ahead and deliver this holiday season? Is this the present
that you want underneath your MLB tree?
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
Now?
Speaker 3 (01:05:37):
Not really, It's a stock and stuffer, That's what I
would call it. It's a move to where you feel
like you add it in something that is good. But
this better not be the thing that parents have been
saving up for saying that the jolly old Saint Nick
was going to deliver for you.
Speaker 1 (01:05:50):
That's all I'm trying to say. You gotta add in
another name.
Speaker 3 (01:05:54):
I think that the Astros aren't done and this better
not be the thing to where you say to yourself, Okay, now,
we feel pretty good about what we've added in this offseason.
We still have some questions when it comes to our
overall offensive personnel. We have the conundrum when it comes
to the infield conclusion collusion. We have some questions when
it comes to the outfield long term. But Mike Burrows, Yeah,
(01:06:16):
we're gonna be right back in the race of the
American League. No if you told me that that that
was the key ingredient to put you over the top,
I would say, even if you are fully healthy, you're
fighting for a wild card spot, and that still might
not be enough to guarantee that you're in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:06:33):
It just might not. So you got to add in
somebody else. The two things that you're looking for.
Speaker 3 (01:06:37):
Now that you added in a player who I'll say,
at this moment December twentieth, twenty twenty five, is a
number four or a number five guy in your rotation,
that's all I will say.
Speaker 1 (01:06:50):
You still got to bring in the number two starter.
Speaker 3 (01:06:52):
You gotta bring in somebody who you can feel confident
in front of Christian hobby Year and behind Hunter Brown.
And you got to bring in an outfielder and end
up meaning that you got to trade away somebody like
an East Soak Parredes. You may have to eat the
salary cap in some ways for Christian Walker just to
make his contract more affordable. And you may have to
be able to get rid of another prospect or another
(01:07:12):
player such as Jake Myers to go ahead and land
a guy that you think is going to be in
upgrade in terms of your overall offensive Idaddy.
Speaker 1 (01:07:20):
Those are just things I think can need to happen.
Speaker 3 (01:07:22):
I do. But if you can do those things, adding
into Mike Burrows could just be the start of a
very promising holiday season now if not.
Speaker 1 (01:07:32):
Unfortunately, this is who you are as a team.
Speaker 3 (01:07:34):
This is where I think that you are going to
kind of say we are teetering more so towards a
soft launch rebuilding, even though we will never admit that
personally because the city I don't think can handle hearing
that those words right now. But it's clear that we
are not trying to compete alongside Toronto, New York, Boston, Baltimore,
(01:07:55):
Seattle as a favorite to win the whole damn thing.
You gotta add in another picture. I think that it
comes via a trade. I think Brady Singer for the
Cincinnati Reds makes a lot of sense. We've talked about
it multiple times in the past. Chris Bubitch seems to
be made available by the Kansas City Royals. If you
bring in an outfielder, that might change because if they've
(01:08:16):
added in a few outfielders like Isaac Collins from the
Milwaukee Brewers, so you may have to go a different pathway.
Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
Jake Meyer seems expendable.
Speaker 3 (01:08:24):
Can he be packaging a deal to add somebody as
you're number two and you gotta be able to add
in an outfielder, maybe at the cost of moving away
from somebody in the infield. If you do those things,
at least you can say, hey, we're right there, right
back in the conversation of being the favorites in the
American League West, we got a division title wrapped on up.
We know that we can deliver when it comes to
in the one hundred and sixty two game season.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
We fixed a lot of faults. We're gonna be healthier.
Speaker 3 (01:08:48):
We're going into this year locked and ready to go
ahead and make a run back to the postseason in October.
Speaker 1 (01:08:53):
All things that are possible.
Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
But Mike Burrows is the name that you have as
the scene stealer of the twenty two twenty five offseason.
You kind of have an understanding about where you sit
among the pecking order in.
Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
The American League.
Speaker 3 (01:09:06):
You're a team that made moves that were safe and
moves that say we're building past this year, but we're
not looking at this year as a go all in moment.
Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Toronto's doing that.
Speaker 3 (01:09:17):
Baltimore is sure as Hell is doing that after adding
in the pieces that they have the last couple of
weeks feels that way for Boston, feels that New York
is trying to guarantee that they've locked up every single
spot in the outfield, the rotation, the bullpen. They feel
that way, and it does feel like that again Toronto,
with the money that they have after being an out
(01:09:37):
a way from winning their first World Series since nineteen
ninety three, they're in that same conversation.
Speaker 1 (01:09:43):
Can the Astros get there?
Speaker 3 (01:09:45):
Who's to say, but Mike Burrows is the move that
you feel like is going to be the one that
we all talk about as the signature moment for them.
It ain't gonna be pretty. And honestly, I can understand
Astros fans being a little underwhelmed by what Dana Brown
has done, so not saying it's done, just saying it
could happen that way. Seven one three, two one two
five seven ninety You have an opportunity to add somebody
(01:10:07):
this holiday season underneath your Astros Christmas Tree.
Speaker 1 (01:10:10):
Who is that player you want to see? Go ahead
and down on in we'll close out Space City Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:10:16):
Talking about what I want for you moving forward I
promise this is gonna be a really interesting segment and
one that I think that you need to hear because
if I just want to get this off my mind,
space Aay Saturday rolls along on Sports Talk seven ninety Next.
We're about to start this second half out of Kyle Field.
(01:10:36):
Currently nothing nothing between the Aggies and the Hurricanes. Thirty
minutes away from one team, and how these two offenses
have looked, guaranteeing that it is going to be a
quick four quarters and a painful death in Arlington against
Ohio State. I'm not saying that they can fix some stuff,
especially in the next two weeks, but it ain't look pretty.
I can tell you that much. It is Space City
(01:10:58):
Saturday with Cole Thompson. We roll right along here on
Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety Alabama comes back wins guarantees that Notre
Dame fans have to shut up about being left out
of the college football playoff. Texans have an opportunity to
guarantee that they finished with double digit wins for the
(01:11:20):
third straight year. On a Damiko Ryans and the Astros.
They bolstered their rotation or maybe their bullpen. Mike Burrows
from Pittsburgh heads on down to h Town. In return
Jacob Melton Anderson Britto they head off to Tampa seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. I want
to bring this up because of I think that it's
important that you, as the listeners, know a little bit
(01:11:44):
more about me. So part of the reason why I
do this gig is because the people like you tune
on in. You want a call, you want to give
me your thoughts. You allow me to vent on how
I feel about the world of sports, and sometimes we
agree and sometimes we disagree. I want to make sure
that whenever you guys call in or whatever you guys
want to hear on this show, you constantly are letting
(01:12:05):
me know, because that's kind of the beauty of what
is sports talk radio. We focus so much in it
on the sports side of things that we don't mention
the talk side. And maybe it's because I'm sentimental, because
I've seen a lot of people that I respect in
this industry having to say goodbye to their jobs over
in the last few weeks. The holiday seasons are right
around the corner, and we don't know what's next for them.
Speaker 1 (01:12:23):
We don't.
Speaker 3 (01:12:24):
But I want to make sure that any single time
you have an opportunity to span on up and give
me your voice, you're the one that's calling on in,
because the only reason we get to do the show
is because of people like you actually want to hear
what's going on. You actually want to hear what are
some things that need to change about the Texans. You
want to hear about why the Rockets are playing so terrible,
(01:12:45):
or why I don't believe in X team, why college
football is such an important deal. And I feel like
that if I'm only leaning into what I want to
talk about, guess what happens. It becomes a show to
where I'm entertaining myself. I want to be entertaining you.
And that's that kind of the new nature of the
business is that people like you may think that I'm
in here doing a job because of I'm good at
(01:13:07):
what I like to do with it. I've been lucky
enough to be able to build a rapport with an
audience and piss some people off, and maybe that's just
what you're looking for. I'm able to do this job
because of people like you get to call on in
and you get to tell me what's on your mind.
So there's ever a time period where you feel like, hey,
he's just gonna go ahead and think about himself. He's
not gonna care about what the callers have to say,
(01:13:28):
he's not gonna care about what belongs in your opinion,
and he's just gonna go ahead and belittle me. Let
me know, because at the end of the day, as
long as I'm here and as long as I have
an opportunity to give back to you guys, I want
this show to be as much involved with you as
it is with me.
Speaker 1 (01:13:46):
And I want that on Monday through Friday from six
to ten am.
Speaker 3 (01:13:49):
I want that on Saturday specifically, On's Just You and
I two hours of NonStop sports conversation, good vibes, and
honestly a little bit of therapy because of let's just
call spade a spade. There are some frustrating things in
the world of Houston football right at Houston Sports right now.
The Rockets looking against dreadful as they did in overtime
against the Nuggets. The Rockets looking as bad as they
(01:14:09):
did on Thursday night out in Smoothie Center against the Pelicans,
who blows a twenty five point lead to the worst
team in the Western Conference and has the gall afterwards
to say, oh, yeah, we're still a favorites in the
Western Conference. No, you're not, and you have a reason
to go ahead and let people doubt you right now.
And the only way that you're going to be able
to fix that narrative is by putting bta tonight when
you go back to the Pepsi Center to take on
(01:14:32):
a Denver Nuggets team that is rolling at the right time,
and even though you can blame three terrible calls by
a veteran official staff, you still played horrendous defense. You
still allow Nikola Jokic to be able to connect downtown
for three pointers on the regular basis.
Speaker 1 (01:14:47):
That's you.
Speaker 3 (01:14:48):
That's out of my control. That's not in the control
of really anybody else. That's just you not delivering. So
there's reasons why we're frustrated in the city when it
comes to our sports. If I'm being too ho hum
or giving too much pre I'm wanting to call me
out for it. If I'm being too cruel or too
critical on a team when I believe that there is
more expectations, I need you to call me out on it,
(01:15:08):
because the more I think about it.
Speaker 1 (01:15:11):
The only reason why we have this platform and why.
Speaker 3 (01:15:15):
We hear at iHeart, are able to do our jobs
is because number one, we have authentic people behind the mics.
We have people who truly care about the nature of
the business and they want to get back to you.
But number two, you make the job so much more fun.
You make this opportunity to be able to call something
that I had been working towards since I was sixteen
a dream, and I want to make sure that as
(01:15:37):
long as I'm sitting here, you guys are keeping the
dream alive. And the only way you do that is
by feedback. So at, mister Cole Thompson seven one three
two two five seven ninety, whatever is on your mind
in the world of sports, don't be afraid to call me,
don't be afraid to go pick up that phone and
let's talk about it. Let's talk about daily. Because of
(01:15:58):
as long as I get to do what I'm doing doing,
you get to have a voice. You get to have
a say on how we do things. You get to
have a say on what makes the real what makes
the ball the ball rolling consistently.
Speaker 1 (01:16:12):
And for a lot of my friends out there.
Speaker 3 (01:16:13):
That I have seen over the last week and a
half have to say goodbye or it's not so long,
it's just until next time for the careers.
Speaker 1 (01:16:23):
I understand that the nature.
Speaker 3 (01:16:25):
Of this industry is constantly changing, and so I want
to make sure that I'm changing with it, and that
means more of you and less of me. As much
as my opinion matters, your opinion matters too. We can
argue about it. We may not see ouy to aye,
but your opinion has to be able to matter or
else what the hell am I doing here?
Speaker 1 (01:16:45):
You guys got to be able to have.
Speaker 3 (01:16:46):
That same massa So seven one three, two one two
five seven ninety Okay, what do I expect in the
second half between Texas A and M and Miami?
Speaker 1 (01:16:56):
Anything? Offensively? They're too good?
Speaker 3 (01:16:59):
Like, I'm sorry, I just see both Malachai Tony in
case the Concepcion having that big time play. I just
see someone along the lines of A. Who am I
talking about Mario Kraver having that big time touchdown whatever
it is. I just can't see you ending this game
(01:17:20):
three nothing. I'm sorry, I can't. It's not possible. So
I think A and M is gonna find a way
to win this game, I think A and M is
gonna do just enough to be able to pull away.
But I'll tell you what, if somehow this game ends
three to nothing, Notre Dame fans are going to once
again lose their minds and say, how in the hell
(01:17:42):
where we left out the college football playoff? And to
be completely transparent, I can't argue with them because if
now the argument goes from hey to heads mattered.
Speaker 1 (01:17:50):
To know how you're playing to close out the year
also matters.
Speaker 3 (01:17:53):
And if Notre Dame would have been able to get
that win over Texas A and M, they would be
in the playoff right now, and they probably would be
beating the crab out of whoever was sitting on the
sidelines at Kyle Field or on the road.
Speaker 1 (01:18:05):
Seven Martin, Let's get to you before we get on
out of here.
Speaker 2 (01:18:11):
Hey, Cole, I like the Astros trade with his Burroughs guy.
I mean if I haven't even seen any pitch all,
but I think that the Astros are are are are
overall you, I really think much closer to having to
(01:18:33):
go through what for all the Astros are instructured total
rebuilding program. They're closer to that. The total reconstirled series
in my opinion. But I hope I'm wrong than they
are too about that. But Cal I want to I
really hope I'm wrong that you like to take the
phone calls and stuff that you really like the interaction
(01:18:56):
like them. Uh so I'm able to and U or
uh with the holidays coming. With the holidays now during
Monday through Friday, but I have time, I'm not able to.
That's all I had to say.
Speaker 1 (01:19:12):
Appreciate you, Martin Listen.
Speaker 3 (01:19:14):
I mean, the Astros trade may end up being something
that is really promising.
Speaker 1 (01:19:17):
It may end up being something that we don't see
for the long haul. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:19:20):
I'm not gonna lean too much into it one way
or another, simply because I just don't know what we're
gonna get from a dude who at this point has
not been out on the field for the long haul.
Speaker 1 (01:19:30):
Frank, you'd be good. We got them off off the
phone lines, We got it all. Get there we go.
Thank you, Martin Listen. End of the day.
Speaker 3 (01:19:37):
I could see a scenario where this ends up being
a reason why the Astros are turning the corner.
Speaker 1 (01:19:42):
And they're competitive.
Speaker 3 (01:19:44):
I mean, this ends up being like the smartest deal
that we've seen in a hot minute, it's unknown at
this point.
Speaker 1 (01:19:49):
Here's the two things that I trust.
Speaker 3 (01:19:50):
Number One, having a dude under contract for what is it,
next six years, you're gonna have a good gauge on
where they are are.
Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
Number Two, it's just like a McDonald's french fry.
Speaker 3 (01:20:04):
You trust the astost pitching staff to be able to
get the job done, and the best version of a
guy on the rotation out of them. Because if we've
seen it time and time before, veterans, free agents, young prospects,
up and comers, it could happen once again. All Right,
(01:20:25):
that does it for us here on Space Say Saturday,
here is the bad news.
Speaker 1 (01:20:29):
We're not in next week.
Speaker 3 (01:20:30):
It is the holiday season. Frankie deserves to have a
day off. I deserve to go ahead and spend a
little bit of time in my family. We're probably not
also going to be in the week of the new year.
So this is the last Space City Saturday, at least
for now a twenty twice six. We'll talk about it, Frankie,
maybe back next week. If not, we will see you
in twenty twenty six. But as parting words for twenty
(01:20:54):
twenty five, college football never sleeps, neither should you always
remember that the holiday season is meant to be with
your family.
Speaker 1 (01:21:03):
Uncle Thompson, see you next time.
Speaker 3 (01:21:05):
Peace,
