They cover the Rockets, and how they're trying to take as much off Amen Thompson's plate as possible. They talk which college football players could end up being Texans, including Caleb Banks and Tyren Montgomery. They talk about all of these and more! the point of where we are, over the doom and
gloom of the Houston Texans not being in the Super Bowl.
It's gonna be New England and it's gonna be the
Seattle Seahawks. Okay, either way, what the gonna walk away
a winner and one of them's gonna walk away and
ask themselves what can we do to improve?

Now here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
There's been nine coaching hires made or eight, with the
ninth expected Clint Kubiaks get one of the two jobs,
whether it be Arizona or Las Vegas. He's gonna get
a move and then eventually he is gonna be taking
over another play design.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
The thing that I look at right now when it.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Comes to Texans is everyone's pivoting towards twenty twenty six.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
I get that. I'm not worried. I'm not even a
little bit worried about where the Texans are.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
And maybe it's because of where my brain is of Okay,
I have realistic expectations. This team is probably gonna finally
get to the level of maybe a conference championship. If
all things go according to plan, it may end up
being in a Super Bowl out.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Where's it next year, Los Angeles? Yeah? Next year? It's
so fine.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
So maybe that's just the way my brain works because
I'm so gung ho on thinking, Okay, things are gonna change.
But here's the thing, Dan, with all these coaching hires
that are being made, look at coaching.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
I say, that's gonna.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Be the priority for the Texans moving forward, and that's
gonna be the priority to guarantee yourself in the Super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Think about the two guys.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
That are currently gearing up for a trip for Super
Bowl sixty out in Santa Clara. Mike Rabel, former player
one of the most underappreciated names. When he was with
the Tesnsee Titans, got the program to its first ever
conference title appearance since two thousand and He ends up
doing it with Ryan Tannehill, and he ends up doing
it with the lackluster offensive line and some missing pieces defensively.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Then talk about Mike McDonald.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Mike McDonald went from being the defense coordinator at the
University of Michigan taking them to a college football playoff,
to then become the defense coordinator at the Baltimore Ravens
to Baltimore fans losing their minds and saying, good God,
why the hell did we hold on for John Harbaugh
when we had him in the building, And now two
years later he has less than ten losses. Oh and
he also has four cores away with Sam Darland as

his quarterback, going to a hoist of a Lombardi.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Trophy if you wanted to take it even a step further,
like than the Baltimore Ravens, like my previous off at
Leana right, the Falcons interviewed both Frable and Mike McDonald
and that just shows you how jose it was, and
chose Raheem Moore.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Openly like quite Newley said, Hey, you know what, these
two guys are very well respected, one young up and comer,
one dude.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Who I'm I'm not sure if Mike, you know, Mike McDaniels,
is gonna.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Be you know, just good vibes, just just just we
went for the vibes looking guess what a backfire. But
the thing is is that both of those guys are
highly respected among their peers in the NFL, and coaching
is gonna be the biggest factor.

Brother, I hate to be the.

Very bad news, but I'm telling you, if you have
any doubt that Demiico Ryans is not the right guy
in charge of the Texans, you're sadly mistaken. And at
this point that's all I'm pivoting to because look at
some of the moves that ever made this offseason. Buffalo
is still gonna have Josh Allen, great quarterback, MVP quarterback.
He has the first year play caller, first year head coach,
Lamar Jackson, two time MVP. It's the playoffs. This past year,

they decided to move off one of the winning his
coaches in in NFL history, first time plaid coach.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
You talk about Kansas City.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
They're finally gonna have to pay the luxury tax of
having a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes on its roster because
it what's gonna cost the Angles salary and they're losing
some pieces. Los Angeles still has one, mister Justin Herbert.
The Bengals are somehow the team that has the most
veteran coach in the AFC North mainship and fire two
years ago. The Steelers are going with Mike McCarthy, So

(06:25):
basically they're going from defensive Mike Tomlin to offensive Mike Tomlin,
and they don't know what they're doing at quarterbacks as
hit New England's still gonna be a threat, but eventually
they're gonna have to pay some pieces and there are
some names that will leave in free agency. And the
Texans still have ten returning starters under contract next season. Defensively,
they have money that will open on up if they

(06:45):
are to release Joe Mixon. They have four picks inside
the top seventy. They have eight total picks.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
They're gonna have anywhere.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
I think by the end when we see restructures and
contract negotiations and all the other stuff that goes with it,
they're gonna have about thirty million dollars in cap space.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
And they're asking c. J.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Stroud, Hey, dude, be a game mancher. We're not asking
to be elite. Drake May got to be a game
manager in the postseason. Look where that let him. Look
at what Sam Darld did in that game against San
Francisco forty nine ers, and look where he's playing right now. Honestly,
at this standpoint, Dimiko Ryans being in my opinion, a
top seven head coach in the NFL gives the Texans
every advantage to where, yes, this season went awry.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
You hate this with CJ. Stroud.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
You have questions long term about what do you want
to do when it comes to your play calling? You
got questions long term what do you want to do
when it comes to your quarterback? And I get that,
but you got the coach, And honestly, at this point,
now more than ever, I think coaching is the dominant
factor that will make or break teams when they go
and try to punch there take it to the super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Well, I mean, you know you just brought up Kansas City.
I mean, that's that's been the concetant for them for
the longest time. It's been Andy Reid. But I think
this is a little bit of two per good, one
for bad. Where the two that are good is coaching continuity,
is Demiko Ryans and seemingly being able to make income
mental improvements every single year. Where last year, remember one

(08:03):
of the biggest things was the penalties. The penalties are
what cost you in games. The penalties are what killed
you this year. It wasn't necessarily the timeliness of the penalties.
They still committed a lot of them, right, but it
wasn't necessarily where it was. Oh my god, you just
absolutely killed the drive because longer third and one and
Laromy touncil jumps off side, you had a holding, you
had a you know, a you know, you false started

(08:26):
any of those different things.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
I mean, if I hear one more legal motion shift,
I'm gonna lose it next season, because that was the
one that stuck out the most this year.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
You you and somebody else who would throw on a
headset and talk about games all the time, but you know,
the potential bad here is. I mean, like everything you
just said is valid one hundred percent. It's CJ Stroud.
It's what are we getting in twenty twenty six. I mean,
that's that's really that's the key of all of this
is it's about CJ. And if we get the guy

that's somewhat closer to twenty twenty three. With everything else
you just mentioned, there's no reason to not believe that
this team can do some special things next year. But again,
as we talk about usually every single week, day six
to ten and am right here on Sports Talk seven ninety,
people are tired of hype. People want to see the results.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
People who want to see the results and that's fine,
but I look at it from the standpoint of I'm
still going about my division.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Liam Cohen great first year, also played the fourth place schedule,
also had the benefactor of not really having to worry
about most teams because they went up against one of
the week of pass rush in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
So I got.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Him come back for year two. Was it the chicken
or the egg? Was Trevor Lawrence actually a good quarterback?
Or was this just all smoking mirrors because it was
a new offense personnel.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Let's throw him out there. Yeah, let's go to Robert Salow.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Robert Salad coached the Jets, so I automatically am giving
you a mulligan. You had to spend years working in
that organization, so I have no idea if you actually
are a good coach or not.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Wait you know, hey, we're hiring a retread. He coached
with the Jets. All right, all right, I take that back.
I take that back.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
There was a there's a guy named Kent Sport who
does like these comedy bits on TikTok, and he said, uh,
they were doing like an interview process of him with
Amy ims Struck, and it's like, hey, so what was
during this four year period that looks just stark and gloomy.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Oh, I coach the New York Jets. Oh, you're hired
like just because that they knew automatically. We can't take
you seriously. We're treating you if you come from the
Jets or the Browns, we're treating you like a first
time head coach, because it's like, eh, like I'm it's
not like anybody really has a chance, Like I'm.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Still sitting here and holding on hoe for Aaron Glenn.
It's not gonna come with the Jets. It's gonna be
two or three years down the line. Like let's say
Kevin Sefanski sucks and the Falcons highre him, and then
lo and behold he takes the tinto.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Super Bowl, and it's like, how the hell are you
doing it?

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Well, you're not being pigeonholed by Woody Johnson an incompetent
quarterback play where the greatest pastor of all time hasn't
played since the nineteen sixties and goes by Broadway Joe like,
I'm sorry. We're at that level of where it's okay
to say you're not okay, And so Robert Salad going
to Nashville, so respect him as a defense coordinator, gets
a second shot of being a head coach.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Demiko Ryans has had his fair share struggles out.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
To facing off against him. Did lose that game to him,
then lost the Jets second time. I mean to lost
it just first time, so that it is something that
you gotta pay attention to.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
And then you throw in the Indianapolis coach with.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
No quarterback situation, where Shane Sichton is probably going to
have to show if he has the chops to be
a legit head coach that can last in the NFL.
You're gonna lose pieces in free agency because you always do.
Your salary cap took a major hit. You don't have
a first round pick this year, you don't have a
first round pick next year, and you're gonna be trusting
your scouting department, which by the way, features Chris Ballard
who gave away too first round picks and said Anthony Rootson,

(11:35):
that dude who's played fourteen college football games, franchise difference maker.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
That guy's my dude. They're leading the charge. So it's
like I look at it. Even from that.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Standpoint, the Texans are still gonna be the favorites in
the AFC South, and well they should because of I
look at the coach and say Collinson won and done. Potentially, Sala,
I have no idea because you're coached out in Florham Park.
And by the way, Shane Sichton, don't let the door
hit you on the way out when Daniel Jones comes
back down to reality. So like, even at that level,
you're gonna be in the playoffs and then it comes
down to the adjustments. And at this point, what more

(12:05):
do you need to see from Demika Ryans because if
he's been in every situation minus an AFC Championship game,
but he would be also the.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
First coach in Francis history to ever accomplish that. Feet well,
I mean it's not it's also too I mean, you know,
talking about the Jags, I mean you almost wonder if
Liam Cohen, I mean, I know he's gonna get great
Yedinsky back and a lot of people they're really huge
on him, But does he even call the plays? Could
could it even be a little bit of either of
those guys? Could it be a little bit of Bobby
Slowik in year two where the league catches up to you,

(12:34):
and the league is like, oh, Trevor did this to
get better. Okay, that's nice. We saw this over a
few months of an offseason. Now we know how to
attack him on this, and he's not as effective all
of a sudden. I mean, the one that keep an
eye on, I would say of the three is Tennessee
with all the draft capital they've got, and I mean
they finally it seems like have made the right moves

(12:57):
because I'm with you on SLA was in a bad situation.
Now it was in a crap shoot. It was it
was never going to work out. It doesn't work out
for anybody not named Rex Ryan.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
He had to wear the biggest clown knows when he
was probably the least amount of troubles out there, and.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Then for a few years maybe a little bit of
Herm Edwards in there, But other than that, it's been
just futility when it comes to the Jets. But you
talk about the draft capital. I thought kem Ward showed
some good things last year. I thought Shumir d k
is a pretty good receiver. Like they've got parts of
that team that I think of the a little bit.
With Tennessee, it's kind of like the Texans, where you

have a good draft, then all of a sudden things
start to look up for you and things start to
turn around for you. So I would say, of the
teams that are trending up, you would probably have to
look at the Tennessee Titans, and a little bit of
neutral at Jacksonville, and then with Indianapolis, I have no
idea what they're doing foot lines.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
You're up in seven one, three, two, two, five, seven ninety.

the NFL. Do you still believe as long as he
is down at NRG drive, Texans are a viable threat
for the Super Bowl year in and year ound seven

I do, I really do. And I know that there's
gonna people in there.

Well cool, you complain all the time and make fun
of the Amy Adams Struck born than anybody else.

I do, cause she sucks because she's not a good owner.
She's not gonna what she does.

She fired Mike Vrabole thinking that he was the problem, which,
by the way, I understand they lost, like they lost
like six, they only won like six their last games
in the last two years, but like still, they made
a good hire like and this is what I hate
about incompetent organizations. It's like they constantly find a way
to kick the can down the road. And eventually an
adult shows up in the room and stays, hey, you

know what we're done with this.

they did by hiring Robert Sala.

And then Robert Sallas steps on in the building and

want to get somebody who knows how to develop him.

Pretty well. Hey, Brian Dable, I hear that you're not
getting the job out in Buffalo. How much? Come join
forces me out in Nashville. Cool.

Cool, that's fantastic. Let's just throw that into the Knicks.
You brought up cam Ward. I'm not buying into it.
I don't really care. I still think he's gonna be
a bottom ten quarterback in the NFL. But I've been
wrong before. I probably will be wrong again. Shimudi game
was really fun. The offensive line, he's onto work.

Here's the beauty. They got a lot of money.

They got the most money to spend in couch space
this upcoming off season, and they play a fourth play schedule,
and their schedule is relaxes all hell, dude. I mean,
you look at some of the names and the outcomes.
It's gonna be really interesting to see when those games
are because we're not gonna know exactly who plays where
and what we can till like middle of March. Like
the Titans, they have everything right now to where I

can look at them and say, ten wins is gonna happen,
isn't it like?

And if it's not ten, it's gonna be.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
Like nine and eight, And they're gonna sneak their way
in as like the last wild card team and then
watch them be the surprise roster that beats a two seed.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
Well, I mean, I think the biggest thing for them is,
you know, cam Ward is really the determining factor because
I almost feel like he had a rookie season that
we would have been fine around here if CJ had
had over the rookie season that CJ had where it was,
you know, all the promise and then you know thinking, oh,
that's it's gonna only get better from here, and it

never did. But I mean, he's got room to grow.
He's got a chance to get even better. But I
mean he showed enough good things though in year one
where you're like, you know what, you get him the
right people around him, he can probably do some good things.
I mean I mentioned DK, one of his receivers, a
really good target for him. And clearly they're probably gonna
add even more in the draft or free agency. And

(17:59):
remember Ember, we did the salary cap exercise the other day.
There the team's got the most in the NFL to spend,
like the absolute most in the NFL. I got about
ninety four million dollars, so they were under the cap
this year. By the way, did you.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
See the report yesterday about it going up to three
hundred and sixty million dollars?

Speaker 1 (18:14):
I mean, there you go throw in another thirty million
on top of that, exactly exactly, So I mean if
you're a free agent out there, and I mean you know,
on top of all of it, I mean, you know,
Buffalo's gonna get their new stadium this year. Right, you
bring guys in and you tell them, hey, you're signing
on where not only are you going to be able
to be in Nashville, which is selling point enough, but

also you're gonna be in a new stadium the following year.
Like how much more can we really kick in to
tell you? Like, this is the right time to get
in on this team.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
So when I went to Nashville to go see Illinois
State play Montana State, yes, I took a day off
of work to go watch the FCS National Championship and
I highly recommend if you ever have the time.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
To do so as well.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
It's freaking awesome. I gotta drove past the stadium, dude,
it's nice. Like I hate would you have to say
positive things.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
About a team that you crap on all the time,
but like, it's nice they did a good job of
putting the location of it. They like basically they took
what was the best.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
Part of Nissan and then like scrunched it on up
and put it into a ball and then said, we're
gonna build a box around it, and then we're gonna
have a trajectory spinning top roof that allows it to
be opened up in the summer and closing the winner.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
Well, I mean and on top of all of it too,
where you know, remember and this happens all the time
with stadiums where you know, Las Vegas is Las Vegas.
Everybody wants to get a Las Vegas. But yeah, for
a weekend, I want to live there, dude. But I mean,
you've got AT and T Stadium, which for the longest
time it was, hey, we need a big event, all right,
let's play it an AT and T Stadium. Now that

new stadium in Nashville, that's going to be kind of
like what San Diego used to be with the Super Bowl.
Sure like that is going to be one of those like, oh,
Nashville got the Super Bowl again. Oh who knew? Like
that's exactly what's going to happen when it comes to
the selection committee, you know, deciding who gets the game
is they're gonna decide to go there just because it's
proximity to basically Bourbon Street, like I would say, A

A A S. It's right across the Kamerland River. It's
right there, a slightly less raunchy version of bird Bourbon
Street with Broadway right there. Yeah. So I mean, I'm
telling you, man, I mean, I just I think that
if there is a team to buy stock in right now,
as much as it pains me to say it, it's
the team that used to be here, and it's the
team that now goes by. By the way, what did
you say was the s hour cap total for your Tessie?

(20:25):
They were currently with the salary cap the way it is,
they were ninety four million US.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
They're at ninety nine point one right now. And by
the way, that's before roster cut downs. I get rid
of a Calvin Ridley contract, I mean a hundred million dollars.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
See, and they're in the good place too. Where again,
we did the exercise the other day, and the Texans
by necessity have to do it. The Titans can just
do it because they're like, you just don't really fit
our future plans, Like there's a major difference there, like
where you're letting guys go because you're saying, hey, you
could be better off somewhere else, or hey, you you

(20:59):
just like really don't fit what we hope that you
are going to be here, as opposed to we really
would like to keep you, but your number is just
so much that we can't. And that's kind of where

line or bringing in a new running back or having
a healthy Joe Mixon if he has to come back,

Now more than ever, I think coaching is the make
or break moment that decides if you are good enough
to win a Super Bowl. Mike McDonald was in an arbor,
went back to Baltimore, coached the crap out of that defense.

They were legit for two years, number one in the NFL.

Guess John in Seattle now compared to the defensive version
of Sean McVay.

took Sam Darnold and this offense to a Super Bowl
title and also the number one seed in the AFC.
In THEFC, Mike Rabol most probably underrated coach. When he

have nice things, so I'm gonna go ahead of punt
him down the road. He goes to New England and

one year after Gerrod Mayo, who probably was in over
his head to begin with, ends up running the team
into the ground with a young promising quarterback, takes into
the number two seed puts them back on top of
the AFC East standings. They run through everybody with a
little bit of help because of injuries and other things
that go along with it, in a five turnover game
to the Texans.

But now they're in the place for the super Bowl,
and I think that you would look at both those
coaches and say, as of this moment, they are top
ten names in the NFL.

Here's the thing, though, Dan, their top ten names. I

You say the shot, no matter who is your quarterback,
no matter who is running your offense, can I give
you a good and bad news? And it's all one answer, Hey,

is that the Texans just have some fine tuning to make.

then you're not getting any better. And I understand them.

to find probably even a good number two receiver, because
it seems like no matter what, Nico Collins is going

about it for one second. I'm but that's the thing is,
like you know, for the moves that can be made
this offseason, the good news is if you're Nick Casario,
is that it's not going to cost you an overwhelming amounts.

that means that you probably where you are salary cap wise,

you're going to have to give yourself some breathing room
because the way that you're sitting right now, even with
the increase, you're going to not be able to spend
anywhere close to what any of these other teams who

You have one guy that is a vital piece to

Now, I'm not saying that Sheldon wants to come back here.

I'm not saying that Sheldon is a guarantee to be
a part of the Texans long term, and that you
don't need to go out and add in a player
in the draft like Caleb Banks. By the way, if

on the tape for mobile. There's a reason why Texans
fans are salivating and saying, look, I get that we
need an offensive tackle. I get that we needed an
interior alignement. I get that adding in a running back
like Jeremiah Love if you were to fall, go make

the call on up. But like Gale Begs, there could
be worse outids and pick number twenty eight if you're
sticking around there, which by the way, Nick probably isn't.

Shean Rankins and bring him back for another year, the
entire defense that set the tone last season is back,

you add him in alongside with Nico Collins, maybe get
another tight ending.

Number one, is Joe Mixing part of this team long term?

way we take some pressure off of Woody Marks. Again,

we got a top five unit. When it comes to
a secondary weapon, potentially, we feel really really good about

and what he did in that game against San Francisco

also is incredibly good in terms of being able to
get upfield to get after the quarterback. That's a good thing.

from the coaching standpoint. You throwing quarterbacks and quarterback is important.

Joe Flacco and have him when a Super Bowl at

look at like I look at Josh Allen. They went
out and they hired in Joe Brady, cool, first time

head coach. What about Lamar Jackson, two time MVP, really
good overall player. He's gonna get an upgrade when it
comes to the offensive, and any Deckland Doyle comes on
in from comes on in from Chicago. You also then
bring in Jesse Minter, elite defensive mind, first time head coach.
Patch Mahomes is gonna have to do more, and he's
coming off a season ending injury out in Kansas.
