Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adham Talking Your Teams series.
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A Team.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
What's Up Houston? It is a Tuesday edition of the
A Team Sports Talk seven ninety. Wex and AC with
you until six o'clock. You know, if you were listening
to the Matt Thomas Show, you heard that already. As
Astros will resume their schedule. Remember the back in the day,
not so long ago, when you saw the Oakland A's
on the schedule and you thought, well, the Astros might
(00:40):
lose one of these games, because they screw around and
do that sometimes even when the Oakland A's are bad.
But now the Athletics have been better than average, let's
put it that way since the All Star break, and
so coming off of a uneven ending to the Diamondback
Series and then an off day, because all of the
questions with Justin Verlander is still up in the air,
(01:00):
it'll be interesting to see how they react respond. Verlander
will not be involved in this series. But with a
good i'd say good team, let's put it that way.
They're playing well at least, or they have played better
coming in. I'm not gonna call them a good team.
I can't say that about the Oakland A's, but it'd
be interesting to see how this series goes with the
opener going tonight and the Astros again trying to make
(01:22):
some distance between themselves and the Seattle Mariners. Texans still
basking in the glow of their twenty nine to twenty
seven win over the Indianapolis Colts. Now they can officially
have the Chicago Bears on the brain, and they will
nationally televised game. I'm I don't think, no, I know
for a fact, this will be the first time that
(01:43):
the Texans home opener will be on national television on
Sunday Night since the very first game in franchise history.
Right right, There's no way they've opened on national television
on Sunday Night Football since the Cowboys back in two
thousand and two.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
I'm almost positive. Okay, you don't care. I just hadn't
given it any thought.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
He's their home opener.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yes, their first game at home will be on Sunday
Night Football in primetime.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
And that's a big defeated.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
That's a big deal. They're a big deal team. Do
you know why it's a big deal Because they're good.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
No, it has nothing to do with them. They're gonna
be fine. I'm not worried. They could play that game
in Siberia and they're gonna beat the bull the Bears.
No I am. I am looking for a full stadium
with crowds that are unruly, maybe a little bit dangerous.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Oh he's stand Yes, he does that every game since
he's been back. Man, I don't understand why nobody's here. No, no, no, no,
they're not selling out. How come there's not one hundred
percent capacity right now? I'm not worried about that. I'm
just saying for this game, I know for a fact
it will be that way. Nobody's gonna have an excuse.
They're gonna be all half of them.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Half of them will be out in the parking lot
all day anyways, which is what I like. I like
Sunday night crowds. I think this is gonna be a
fantastic environment. You factor in the fact that they should
should I should beat the Chicago Bears pretty handily, I
would say, and it makes for a good home opener.
And then if you're two and zer after that you've
(03:09):
seen the schedule. I just I feel good, man, I
feel good about the Texans better than I should, even
after a one to oh start against the division rival,
like I feel like all the pieces have fallen into place,
and barring some stupid thing like an injury or something
like that, I feel like this could be a fun
ride in twenty twenty four. Well, they are favored heavily.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
They are a six and a half point favorite, and
it is where it opened and it remains that today.
I imagine it will probably shift a little bit over
the course of the week, but doesn't look like anything
of significance for either team will take Week one into
week two from an injury standpoint, and that obviously is
good news. Considering the way the Texans handled their business,
especially upfront and again playing from in front and staying
in front by matching and answering everything the Colts had
(03:53):
to throw at them. They aren't facing a quarterback quite
that capable. And it's kind of interesting that Caleb Williams
is such an obvious number one overall pick player for
two years. Most people think he would have been a
number one pick had he been in the draft that
Bryce Young went number one, and he obviously was the
number one pick when he was in the draft this
(04:13):
past year, and I'm watching his performance as a first
game rookie player and looking at Anthony Richardson as a
guy who's been in the system, been in the league,
been in the building for a year. But it barely played,
you know, a couple of games that he finished, a
couple of games that he started and didn't, and then
he was out there on Sunday. And I think Caleb
(04:36):
Williams and Anthony Richardson's progress, for the skill sets that
they both present, it's gonna be a fun watch. We
won't watch it very closely because after this Texans Bears game,
there's basically none in the future. You'll play them when
the divisions meet again, and maybe one other time. With
how they cross over games, that's about it. So head
(04:57):
to head not so much. But in terms of trying
to figure out how to get the ball where it
needs to go, they're in roughly the same place, and
for all different reasons. Type of body they have, type
of magic they have with our arm might be different.
So I think Caleb Williams will probably prove to be
a pretty good passer in this league, but he certainly
wasn't in the opener and this is what the Texans
(05:17):
and any other team that's on the Bears schedule, that's
on the Patriots schedule. Whenever Drake May gets out there,
that's on the commander's schedule. With Jayden Daniels and on
down the line, people playing the bo Nicks led Broncos
are going to be a different team later in the year.
The Texans getting Caleb Williams in his first road start
in his second NFL game, second straight week. I hope
(05:41):
he's facing a very good defense as they go back
to back weeks inside the AFC South. The Texans have
work to do defensively. There are a lot of other
teams that look like they might have the makings of
a much better defense. Don't want to overreact either way
for Week one. Some of its oppositions. Some of it
is not having on the field very much together, which
(06:01):
I advocate strongly. I don't really care how good Laramie
Tunsel is for eight plays over five weeks in a
preseason setting. I care how good he is when he's
going and all that applies to any player. But we
gotta wait till everybody else plays. Because the Texans are
the team the league wants you to see that is
(06:21):
a good thing.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Six nationally televised games. You know, it's interesting because I
always keep talking about the Texans and the Rockets as
far as parallels with organizations here in town, because they've
really they've had some similar seminole moments coaching higher personnel wise,
(06:43):
GM wise, even.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Trying to win, yeah, basically, which they work initially trying
to do.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
But one of them is suddenly fast tracked because they
got what the other team didn't, which is a superstar.
Now it's very different in the NFL versus the NBA.
You get a superstar in the NBA, it's like, no,
that season, you're gonna start winning again.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
But the Texans got a superstar, yeah, and immediately started winning.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
But he's just throstar quarterback.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Well, the Spurs got a superstar and they produced roughly
the exact same season.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
But that's because he's overrated. Yeah, I said it, what
San Antonio, come at.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Me now, Lebron coming into the league, since those two
guys seem to be a little bit above most all
the other number one picks, and I think that's probably fair.
It wasn't overnight, but it was pretty quick. With the
Cavs it's it really we can probably not delve too far.
Booby Gibson to the finals, yes, but not his first year.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
They didn't have a very good team.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
So yes, well that's how you get to the top
of the draft. Yeah, the Texans. Honestly, the overnight part,
it really did happen overnight from a record standpoint, but
that's doing a disservice to some of the players that
were twenty twenty two and twenty twenty one Texans. Nico
Collins is one such player. Derek Stingley Junior is one
such player. There aren't a lot Laramie Tonsel, Titus Howard,
(07:54):
There's a handful in there, you know, Shaq Mason. These
are players that the there's something there that they actually
they were trying to put a little bit of the
foundation in place. You gotta have forty or twenty two
new starters basically from what Levey and coach Cully were
working with and the end of the O'Brien slash Cronell
era overnight record wise, no question about it, they were
(08:16):
playing for the worst record in the NFL one game
before CJ. Stroud became your starting quarterback, you were about
to be the worst team in the NFL record wise,
and your very next set of seventeen games you were
when the division went to the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
You know, it's interesting about that too, because for so long,
simply because of the history, I felt like from the
inception of the Houston Texans organization, it was them and
the Titans. You had the Oilers connection. Of course, the
NFL puts them in the same division. Intentionally, of course
they did because, as you know, Nashville is located in
the South, and even more so, Indianapolis is located in
(08:55):
the South. What's your option, The point being, it has
more like I have never seen two organizations in a
division that are so intrinsically linked now because of things
that have happened that have changed the face of this franchise.
And I'm talking about the Texans. You know, you had
to win that game that you needed to lose in
(09:17):
order to get CJ. Stroud, who fell into your lap
at number two, And then you had to beat that
team again on the final game of the season a
year later to get into the postseason. And then you
open up this season with their stud quarterback and you
tube going at it and CJ. Wins the battle and
the war, whatever you want to call it. Maybe Anthony
Richardson won the I don't know.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
They haven't had the war yet. That the battle the
war is the Division Changubal battle within the war, I guess,
is what I should have said. But you're right, it's
it's just one regular season game. But I just like
the Titans are just they're nothing.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
They're the only thing the Titans and the Texans have
now is arguing about a stupid light blue color. That's
where we're at with those two teams. They just I
could not care less about the Tennessee Titans. Just don't
I care about the Houston Texans. I never thought i'd
say that, but CJ. Shroud and Demico Ryans as an
entity is that. I was having this conversation with somebody yesterday,
though I'm not ready to fully give Nick Cassario his flowers,
(10:15):
as stupid as that sounds. Yesterday you said he had
the best day ever. I know he did have the
best day ever on Sunday. But when we come back,
I want to explain what I mean because this is
gonna take a little thought and plus it'll make you
roll your eyes, and we might even argue about it
because there's a very big reason for it, and it's
gonna It's like, if you're a Texans fan, I'm not
saying this should stick in your craw and I'm not
(10:37):
even saying that it should define him, but right now
it kind of does. And again, I'll explain why, because
there's there's a lot that goes into this. It's a
little complicated, and plus it's me, so I'm gonna always
take the scenic route and explaining it. But I'll see
if you agree with me. I'll see if you guys
agree with me that are listening and of course watching
over on Space City Home Network as the Texans and
(10:58):
the Bears get together on Sunday Night Football. Texan's looking
to go to two and zero on the very young
season and c J. Stroud looking to install the latest
chapter of what has already been a fantastic young career.
That's gonna be fun. Oh, by the way, is the
Astros lineup as constructed, which we will also get to
in the next segment. Their best foot forward, even with
(11:20):
Tucker d Hing probably not since you won him in
right field, but they've got the lineup out for the
first of this series against the Oakland A's we'll discuss that,
we'll argue, we'll do all of the things we do
on a Tuesday edition of The A Team Sports Talk
seven to ninety and of course Space City Home.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
Network the A t on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
One of the best things has happened here in Houston
the arrival of QC Kinetics, because it means wex that
you have another option when it comes to getting rid
of your joint pain, your knees, your hips, your shoulders,
your back. You don't have to be old and decrepit
or whatever. You could be someone that has some sort
of condition, maybe from a sports injury, that you've got
joint pain and you don't want to go under the
(12:05):
knife to get it done. That's where QC kinetics comes
into play. Yeah, this is the option.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
QC Kinetics is seven one three, nine one three fifty
two eighty five. Get that free consultation. Follow the line
of tens of thousands of satisfied patients saying goodbye to
chronic joint pain. Your body's on healing properties are going
to work here. They're going to give you lasting pain relief.
We're talking about regenerative medicine and We're going to send
you to the nation's leader in regenerative medicine. That is
(12:30):
what you're gonna find at QC Kinetics seven to one
three nine one three fifty two eighty five. For Houston
area locations, the Cypress location, the Heights location, the Woodlands,
and their location is sugar Land. Again, it's QC Kinetics
seven to one three nine one three fifty two eighty five.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
We now return to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexelwerth on Sports.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
I always feel like this is a particular artist when
I hear this bump. All right, it is the A
team here on Sports Talk seven to ninety and Space
City Home Network. Let me explain myself, because I know
the mob is gonna come with me with a pitchforks
if I dare say anything negative. It's not even negative
about Nick Cassio. Here's my thing. I texted you this
(13:18):
on Sunday, and I texted another mutual friend of ours
within the media this on Sunday right around the same time,
and I got a similar responses. What I got from
them was and what I said was Nick Cassio is
having a very very good day, and he was This
is about the time that Joe Mixon was running over
(13:41):
any number of Colts defenders for the umpteenth time on
the afternoon. This was around the time Stefan Diggs was
catching touchdown pass number two. This was around the time
Nico Collins was doing Nico Collins things fresh off his extension.
You know, all of these are Nick Cassario moves, which
brings me to my explanation and why I say let's
hold off on Nick Cassario's flowers. The number one reason
(14:03):
is before the CJ. Stroud acquisition and subsequently the will
Anderson acquisition on Draft night a year ago, what was
his number one personnel move in your opinion? And I
know I'm hitting you with this successful, Yes, correct, successful?
Speaker 3 (14:23):
I mean following that season, it probably wasn't Derek Stingley Junior.
But so I'd say that now probably it was at
that point following his first two seasons, it probably wasn't
Nico Collins. Right now, these are guys that have made
him look better with time, obviously.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
But it all happened last year.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
So going back to his first two years, when I've
said they weren't trying, while also acknowledging the acquisition of
a couple of these players is still pertinent to today's winning organization.
Those two are the most notable, Collins and Stingley Junior,
two of his draft picks. But there's a reason why
the two teams that Nick Casserio put together the first
(15:06):
two times were awful because those players weren't good except
for one or two guys, and none of them played quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
That's why you were awful, right real quickly.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
I personally my thought, they're not intentionally trying to draft back,
but they were intentionally not signing players correct.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
And if they were signing the guys they were signing,
they were on one year deals.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Famously, yes, a lot of and not front end players,
how long the deal is. They weren't signing excellent players
on purpose.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
This guy, as you'll hear Demiko Say, Demiko Ryan Say,
is a top tier player.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
Nick being able to make a move to be able
to get him. I think that credit goes to Nick
and him being on it and dialed in and ready
to go to get Joe here. And you know, we
knew we wanted to add to our running game or
and added Joe. It was the perfect fit for us.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Yeah, and he looks like it through one week one
week only.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
So you want to take the actual meaning what he
said there, you want to just stick to the actual
words that he said.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Sure, I'll take the hidden meaning. Well, give us both.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
Well, let's hear Demiko again so I can nail it
for everybody. If you're listening very closely this time, you
have to listen much more closely than you did the
first time. Listen to Domko's words and then try to
understand what he's saying.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
Nick being able to make a move to be able
to get him. I think that credit goes to Nick
and him being on and dialed in and ready to go.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
To Gatzill here exactly being dialed in and ready to go.
What does he mean ready to go crying? No, he
means when he failed to secure Saquon Barkley, he was
ready to go on another player because there was no
way they were going into the season without addressing the
biggest offensive need that this team had that you could
(16:50):
address with one signing. Clearly, offensive line is always something
you want to get better. But he was I thought
it was kind of a desperate move. Hearing Demiko say
it in that way, make that sound less, So Joe
Mixon's game yesterday two days ago is not quite Joe
Mixon's seasons in Cincinnati. He basically didn't have any games
(17:12):
like that for the last couple of years. There are
a lot of reasons why, and yesterday kind of points
that it's probably not because of him that he wasn't
able to do.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
That was because of all the other things that weren't
in place.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
So I think that's the hidden meeting, and maybe Demiko
unknowingly is revealing that when he watched the Price. We'll
take Joe Shane's words on Hard Knocks during the offseason
when he was trying not to get his head shewed
off by his owner, even though it's been crushing him
all week. Man, I'd have a hard time sleeping at
night if Saquon played for the Eagles. You know, he's
(17:44):
like our favorite player here. Oh yeah, I know, and
now he plays for the Eagles. But he was saying,
it looks like Chicago's driving up the price, and you know,
I do think he's he had it, he was on it,
and I think Nick Cassario watched the same thing, drove
up the price. Philadelphia got to this level and as
it was rising out of their comfort zone. He was
still paying attention to, well, or should we be in
(18:06):
the mix for Aaron Jones? Should we be in the
mix for Zack Moss? Moss a free agent Jones would
become one when the Packers went out and added Josh Jacobs,
and ultimately that whole domino fell in their laps when
it was Cincinnati that signed Zack Moss. But just because
it falls in your lap doesn't mean you're there to
pick it up and put it together.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
He was.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
He was ready to tell Cincinnati, look, before you send
Joe Mixon to the waiver wire, let us put something
together and take him off your hands for next to nothing.
How about a seventh round pick? Okay, well, okay, great,
that is a great job.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
Okay. Two things. The Saquon Barkley thing, which I hadn't
actually intended to bring up, but since it came up,
and it's a very pertinent part of this conversation, what
do you feel like? What does everybody feel like? Was
the reason that Saquon Barkley's not sitting here in Houston
wearing Texans gear, new Texans gear, I might add, which,
by the way, Arian Foster thinks is fire? Is it
(18:59):
because of the price? Is it because I mean, is
there anything else? Well, if Saquon Barkley, who's rumored to
have really wanted to play here his own rumor specifically, right,
he said it, Yeah, Actually Saquon Barkley wanted to play
with CJ.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Stroust, So specifically, you're asking yourself, well, why doesn't he
want to be here?
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Well, there's your answer.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
He did want to be here, but okay, and his
agent felt like it's still a good enough situation in Philly, clearly,
and they're paying me more, Yes, a lot.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
And that's what it comes down to when you say
Nick Cassario failed to get Saquon Barkley to me, And again,
since we're doing real meaning and hidden meaning, that almost
implies he tried and failed or he was in the running,
you know. But to me, if I'm looking at how
that situation unfolded, it was more like, we're not going
(19:44):
to spend this X amount of dollars on this one guy,
and a big reason why is because of what we're
going to need to spend later on other people.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
And now you're just turning into the A team. You're
bringing semantics into it, that's what we do. Failed sounds harsh,
so you've pushed back on it. He clearly did try.
And remember it was my idea this segment to not
give him his flowers. And I haven't even gotten to why.
Everybody knows because Saquan has said it and we know
it to be true. The Texans did try. They wanted
to sign Saquon Barkley and free agency, that's not We're
(20:13):
not debating it.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
And you wanted to be here, but is he here?
Speaker 3 (20:16):
No, So if I can't use the word failed when
it fits, I mean I could choose a softer word
if he'd like, but it's not. I'm not trying to
dog him for it. This is how their pursuit went,
and they chose a different direction once it got to
a certain level. They had a line drawn in the
money saying, and that was all they could do. For
all the reasons you describe, they could have been stuck
(20:37):
because remember this wasn't day one.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
Of free agency or day two.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
This was as other running backs were all finding homes,
and again, Aaron Jones wasn't necessarily going to be on
the market, wasn't going to be on the move. Josh
Jacob's situation kind of necessitate necessitated that the fact that
the Bengals decided to move on from Joe Mixon and
go forward with Chase Brown and the newly signed Zach Moss.
You don't think he had intel on that inside Cincinnati's building,
(21:03):
that that's where they were headed. But as soon as
that was the direction they were headed, he was in
a position had done all the proper work that he
and his staff do to say, well, Barkley's a free agent.
We can't guarantee he's going to be here under any circumstances,
So what are the next options? Plan B, plan I
mean to say Joe Mixon was not Plan A is
(21:24):
accurate and fair.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
He might not have even been planned B.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Plan B for the last part of what oh or
see if you'd like.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
See the last sectary bringing him back? Would you think
that was plan B before Joe Mixon.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
I think that was probably we can find somebody we'd
rather pay a certain amount of money to versus giving
that kind of money sixteen and a half million over
three years for Singletary to go to the Giants. I
don't think they were going to get there with him,
so probably further down the list. But the last part
of what Demko said was he's a perfect fit that's
doing a good job as a GM. If you find
(21:56):
out your plan A, which you thought was a perfect
or fit, yeah, isn't there for you anymore because he's
now going to Philadelphia. You had someone else that may
or may not be available. You're also you're look, you
don't we don't know that they're gonna be available, but
you look at their contract situation. Who's about to go
into the final year, Who's likely to be asking for
a renegotiation, and then when they get rebuffed, what are
(22:17):
they gonna do next? They're gonna demand a trade, They're
gonna be asking if their agent could go seek a
new place for them. And I think the Texans were
probably aware of what would ultimately be potentially be Joe's situation.
But again I'm not quite you know, I haven't made
the phone call to drop the flowers off at Nick's
desk yet, but there's certainly a lot of things that
(22:37):
he has been in charge of and put in place
as to why the Texans have won a ton of
football games since the beginning of twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
And you family, I'm gonna get to the reasoning next
segment because I have to, I have to let it breathe.
There are a lot of a lot of aspects of
his job coming into this situation. And I'll tell you
just as a guy sitting in this chair, and there
weren't cameras on us back in those days, but I
can tell you right now it's like we're in their
(23:07):
own draft room. Well, it was some of the more
excruciating shows that we've ever done from my standpoint, talking
about the process of what Nick Cassario was doing, because
you said it trust the process, all right, did it?
What was his name name, Sammy sam Hinky. Yeah, nobody
calls him Sammy, Sammy Summer. It was. It was pretty
(23:32):
excruciating to go through those years. But now we're on
the good side, and I'll explain to you, and everybody's
going to throw tomatoes at me what I meant about
Casario when we come back.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
The ad on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
You know, there's a storm on the way, looks like
we might dodge it, but there's also storms that have
come through. Talking about barrel, talking about any sort of
storm that has done damage to your home, and that's
not even sometimes the worst part because now the struggle
with your insurance company either as just starting or it's continuing.
You paid your premiums, you filed the claim, and now
(24:08):
you're getting a low bald. That is no way to live.
That's no way to go about it. And you don't
want to play that game. You want to call seven
one three four two four forty forty and get more
as in More Law Firm, which specializes in getting storm
victims the compensation they deserve, been fighting insurance companies for

Speaker 6 (24:44):
Hey yo, uh, listen to Sports Job seven ninety on
any device with our free iHeartRadio app. It's free like
a punch to that face.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
It is the eight team Sports Talk seven ninety on
a Tuesday edition of the program. Wex and ac with
you on Space City Home network as well. All right,
here's the problem with the Nick Sario Flowers giving three
segments into the show. Finally we're gonna get to it.
I cannot fundamentally give him all the credit for CJ.
(25:29):
Stroud when he fell into his lap. That's as basic
as I can make it. That's as basic as I
can put it. And here's the problem. Here's what compounds
that or I think backs what I'm trying to say.
It's not that he didn't go out and draft good players,
whether they were initially good or later were good. In
the case of guys like Stingley or even Nico Collins,
(25:50):
for example, who he just extended and along with Stefan
Diggs and Joe Mixon good offseason, supplementing CJ. Stroud in
that offense. Not to mention when he's done the defensive
side of things, but when you know you're pretty sure,
what percentage would you put on it that he was
also attempting to trade up for Bryce Young in the
(26:11):
process of the whole draft situation when they didn't get
the number one pick. We're pretty sure of that, pretty
close to one hundred. So if he was trying to
get that guy who is still awful, hasn't done anything
to change my mind. I just thought he was going
to be smallish and get bullied. I didn't think he
was going to be terrible too. When CJ falls into
(26:32):
your lap, when a transformative player like that falls into
your lap, even if you make the deal to go
get a Will Anderson Junior with the very next pick,
I just can't say, all right, man, Nick Casseio, that's
the guy, even moving forward, even though right now there's
no reason other than that for me to say, I
let's just wait and see. I'm just not gonna give
(26:54):
him the Executive of the Year award right now, less
than two games into the season, when CJ shrouds the
main for it, and CJ Stroud wouldn't be here if
he got his way. During that offseason before the draft.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
We've talked about a bunch of these little pieces which
now apply to today's conversation about that it's the hardest
thing to do. It's the hardest thing to do apparently,
or nobody's putting the time and effort into it, which
seems wrong.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
To make it work.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
And that's finding your quarterback, evaluating him properly, and moving
forward with it. It's why we there's so much angst
about how could you give Dak Prescott two hundred and
forty million. It's why number one, number two, number three,
number five, number ten, number fifteen. Overall, picks fail all
the time when they're quarterbacks. You know, people drafting JJ
McCarthy this year, Oh my god, what are you doing?
(27:41):
And then he could end up being very good two
or three teams. I might have had an A plus.
This is the best quarterback in the draft grade on him,
you know, Nicks, this guy's a second or third round talent.
Not to Denver will Levice. No way he can play
at the NFL. Well, the Titans think otherwise. I mean,
this is why GM's are always on the line, because
(28:02):
your scale, we like to use it here on the
a team of Nick Cassario's moves, I don't really think
it makes much of a difference what he did in
the first two seasons, because none of them were catastrophic.
They weren't necessarily helping you win. But again, i'd think
that was partially by design. Let's sign five hundred receivers
for a million dollars. I see which ones we want
on the field that won't do anything. Let's not put
any players out that there weren't a long term let's
(28:24):
not draft again. There's nothing he could really do in
Draft one. I think things changed in Draft two, but
only partially. I think if the team was in a
little bit different situation, they're probably not trading out of thirteen,
even if it's only back two spots to fifteen. But
where the development of the team was in order to
gain a player you knew you'd want anyway at fifteen.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
We have debates over that.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
But then got all the addition, he was building assets
and building assets, and he's doing what we you know,
look at NBA teams doing the Thunder or the Celtics
they got all these first round picks. Well, he was
trying to get enough picks in his kitty that he
could then turn around like Darryl Morey do with James
Harden when it was time for it. Yeah, and the
time was let's go get Will Anderson. And a lot
(29:06):
of that had to do with Sean Watson clearly the trade.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
But which is the flip side of this? He made
out like a bandit in that thing. Sure he did.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
And if the Texans drafted not even just Bryce after
they did not have the number one pick, what if
they did draft some other quarterback or no quarterback at all.
We probably wouldn't be smart enough, maybe me, to acknowledge
all the moves that they've made, because it wouldn't matter
because the quarterback play wouldn't be good enough to justify
some of those moves, and in turn, they wouldn't have
(29:35):
even made them. Daniel Hunter's not a Texan if CJ.
S drowd doesn't have the year age last year he
Richardson for example, do you think what if he has
the same season right the same season he had right
like not playing.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Could you imagine if CJ went to the Colt and
was doing what he's doing there. Oh again this turn.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
Now you turn it into the agents for Daniel Hunter
and the GMS for the Colts, and well, where do
you want to play? Well, someone's going to offer me
a little bit more money. I'll probably play there regardless.
But I'll also definitely play there when I get to
play on a team that just went to the playoffs,
that has their quarterback in place that I don't have
any doubt about. Money Usually always talks, for sure, but
(30:14):
he can't make the Texans make an offer to him.
The Texans don't call Daniel Hunter to join the team
if their quarterback play is mediocre.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
In my opinion.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
Well, and here's the thing, it's maybe the same thing
with a ziz Al Shayer. I mean, even though he's
not the most expensive player. Yeah, well, why are they
making these calls to spend all this money on these
players to put them on the field so they can
go seven to ten and make it harder to find
their quarterback of the future while going a year into
the contracts of these players that are gonna be looking
(30:43):
for more money or looking to leave by the time
you find him.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
And again the flip side, I know, I just got
done talking about Casario, but I don't know how it
all went. Like the Deshaun Watson trade almost cancels out
any negativity towards Well, you tried to get Bryce Young,
but you know CJ fell in your laps. You don't
get credit for that, which is basically what I'm saying,
And it comes off really bad when you say it
that way. But here's the deal. The hiring of Demko
(31:06):
is just as important. Well, it might not be just
as important, because a franchise quarterback is a franchise quarterback
is a franchise quarterback. But Demiko and the culture he
has helped install. That credit. I don't know who to
give it to, because well, Hannah and Cal are in
the room. You notice with the order in which I
said their names.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
You should because yeah, there's zero, from my understanding existing
relationship between Nick Casserio and Demiko Ryans. Now, Hannah might
not have had a previous relationship with Demiko from a
football standpoint, but Cal did, and his family did, and
the city did. Like, there's a third entity to this
whole discussion Houston. You mentioned GM, you mentioned the owners.
(31:47):
The other entity is clearly well he likes it, even
with the issue with the field and injury. Look at
what Andre Johnson just said about Houston. Yes it's home now,
Like this is this franchise was Random City USA football franchise?
Is Demiko jumping at the chance to become that team's
head coach? Looking at the history of Random City USA?
(32:10):
The last year brought Levin wins in three years, And
you want me to coach your football team? You know,
it's funny. Oh, you're in Houston. That changes things. You're
my team that changes things.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
You know what's funny about Houston specifically and as it
pertains to the state of Texas and the two NFL
teams that reside here. I know all there is to
know about what it means to put on the star
on your helmet. Nothing, no one exactly, especially now, no one,
and I mean no one. I've never heard it. Go
ahead and give me an example.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Are any ready for the Texans and Cowboys to get
together for some don't mess with Texans Texas commercials.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
It's gonna be awesome. No one says, man, it's just
the city of Dallas just brought me in. No one
says that no one plays there because of that city,
you know, even play in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
What if we have the same conversation next year about
a form superstar Cowboys player coming back to coach the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
His name rhymes with Dion. I hope they do that
because it will absolutely torpedo that franchise. He's done so well.
I saw some other day football game three and nine,
and now he's made three and nine with a bunch
of attention on them, I'm basically Paris for the university.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
A lot of money put them in a much better light.
They're in a much better place. They don't have the
players to compete.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
If they fail and they don't hire anybody other than
Bill Belichick, they're idiots, which we already know they're idiots,
so that's probably what.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Now, we brought up two interesting names for your cowboys,
who also started the season one to zero.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Interesting. The A Team continues.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
Hey, maybe you got tickets for that game up north
and you want to resell them for whatever reason, but
you want an easy and hassle free way of doing it.
There's only one place to go that is Quick Assist asyst.
You find it on the App store a Google play store,
so you can make the most of your game day seats.
They make that ticket resale easy. It is hassle free
for you.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
They handle all the work, listing your ticket everywhere you
want it to be, so you can't get back what
you want. Quick Assist as ysd your ticket everywhere.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
Back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler. Now here's Adam. No, No,
the other Adam on second tod No Adam, you take it?
Speaker 4 (34:23):
No, No, no, no, Adam. Wait wait Adam. Guys. Guys,
The AEAM.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
A Team winding down these three o'clock hour here on
Sports Talk seven ninety and Space City Home Network. A
lot of Texans chatter over the first few segments. The
Astros though getting back on the horse tonight. But it's
Justin Verlander thing and how it's going to play out
the rest of the way is going to be very
very interesting. Matter of fact, Like Matt and Ross were
(34:58):
talking about this earlier, who ultimately makes the decision? And
I'm not even joking when I say this, Justin's arm.
I know that that, but see that's you can't think
that way. You're thinking logically, Okay, I'm talking about who
makes the decision as to whether or not he's on
the playoff roster or what role he has on that
playoff roster. And I'm giving you options here. It's not
(35:19):
necessarily Dana, it's not necessarily Joe. It might have heavily
influenced from one James Crane.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
Well, James likes to win, so that ought to play
into James thinking, Jim, if you will.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
But they're friends.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Yeah, but I think winning as an Astros owner for
the third time would probably outweigh his friendship with Kate
Upton's husband.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
Do you think Dana, Do you think Dana makes that
deal last year.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
I know you're trying to put me on the spot
here and I'm not allowing it. Like who's pitching tonight,
Actually Spencer?
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Okay, yes, Spencer's the next guy up.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
Okay, he doesn't have a successful outing and like his
last one. Well, I'm not trying to make him that bad.
But let's say as an unsuccessful outing again, because neither
one of them have actually plays your team in a
bind as you begin sixteen straight days of baseball, and
then what if you say Cakuchi's streak of well, when
I pitch, we win stops and he gives up another
(36:16):
four runs like he did the last time nights. I'm
just saying there's too many other factors still at play.
There's two things that are definitive no matter what happens
to the rest of the season, other than injury from
ber Valdez and Hunter Brown, are starting your playoff games.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
There's zero doubt a games one and two, those are
your guys.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
I mean, I'm not even going that far, but I
think the fair thing to say, yeah, yes, there's no
nothing can happen between now and then unless you need
them on Saturday and Sunday to get to the playoffs,
then your wild card game situation might be altered.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Let not do that.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
That's not really what you think. Everybody understands the point.
But but then what, Okay, Renel Blanco is probably capable
of being given the ball, but they're already very worried
about him, to the point they put him in the
bullpen briefly and then we'll reinsert him into the rotation.
But every inning he pitches, they're concerned about. Every game
he pitches, they're not so comfortable that he's going to
get through those six innings. There's Kukuchi, there's Roy there's Verlander.
(37:13):
They should probably feel very similarly, maybe all three of them.
Other than you say that I got to do something
to earn my spot. JV absolutely should feel that way.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
And I know the tech.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
The team is not on some kind of unbelievable role
since he came back, and I do think he's part
of it, but they literally lose every time he pitches.
Now he's pitched four times, they're zer and four they're
well above five hundred, even not playing great baseball. When
he doesn't pitch, it matters. And I didn't want to
do this, but I thought about it. On Sunday when
(37:46):
his game came as it did, If you guys want
me to believe that just having Jose Abrew in the
clubhouse was bringing this team down. Just seeing him step
to the plate with anybody on base, ever, was bring
the whole team down to the point they couldn't perform anymore. Well,
when you hand Justin Verlin under the ball, you probably
(38:08):
feel like, well, we're probably not gonna win today.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
That's not even an unfair statement, and it's crazy crazy.
Let me emphasize that we're saying that here in twenty
twenty four, considering all that he has done just for
this franchise. Forget his Detroit career ever existed, as you should, well,
but let's just say a long time ago it was well, okay,
(38:35):
let's let's just start there. Since we're on the subject,
what cap does he wear into the Hall of Fame?
I'm just kidding, very unconcerned at this figure, But you know,
like that that shows you just how much he's accomplished
in a relatively short time in comparison to that long
tenure in Detroit.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Now, let me separate him from the Abravia comment a
little bit. Abravier's performance was clear as day because you'd
seen it the year before, and then it just got
worse as it would normally do in that stage of
his career. Justin's is a little bit different because you still,
especially after he returned the first time, so before the
neck discomfort, there were clearly outings where his stuff wasn't
just good, it was good enough to get you six
(39:14):
or seven super solid innings. A seven innings shutout performance,
you're gonna win that game. Six innings of one run baseball,
You're going to win that game. I wish I wasn't
talking about starts he made in May, but I am
so June July and now is four starts from August
in September. There isn't any of that him saying his
stuff seemed crisp, and the pitchers are coming out the
way they are. I'm a little tired of this spring
(39:35):
training thought being put in there, not that they shouldn't
be doing it, but that he's in it. He made
rehab appearances, he's now made four starts. How long do
you think spring training is like? He's beyond that at.
Speaker 2 (39:46):
The in the middle of a division, right, Well, I'm
not talking about it as to should they be giving
him starts as he progresses through the pseudo spring training.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
I mean, he should be out of this already. He's
not making his third start. He's not getting ball for
the third time. He's getting the ball for the seventh time.
The next time he gets the ball after this latest
incident or issue with his injury, because he made a
couple of rehab starts. That's when you're working on things,
you're ramping up. All he ever talked about was I
want to get to seventy pitches and then I can
get to His pitch counts are fine.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
He's ramped up. He's ready to go.
Speaker 3 (40:18):
He just has more trouble at this stage of his
career launching the pitches he want. His execution stinks, his
location stinks, and that's why the results are what they are.
It's not a matter of this spring training idea and
the getting ready. He just can't find it. And it's
been a long time since he's consistently had it. At
no point this year has he consistently had it. There's
(40:39):
not a stretch of two, three, four starts where's he's
bringing the A stuff and you're getting six or seven
good innings from him.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
Go back all the way to his Game five start
in a twenty twenty two World Series. Everybody likes to
remember obviously that they were hoisting the piece of metal
as rov metal right sorry at the end of the
like there is a very real argument to be made
that if he starts game six instead of game five,
(41:08):
for example, that you're playing a game seven for the
World Series at home. He had to labor to get
through the five I think it was five even innings.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
But what were the results. You're you're making it sound
way worse than it was. I watched that he scored
one time. I know in five innings. I know that
that's a good playoffs start. He has a series start.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
Exactly, but I felt like it would it took all
of the effort in the world just to gut out
those five innings, and then you had to have an
amazing catch from Chaz and everything else that happened. The
bullpen had to be nails, as per usual because they
were that year, and then all throughout twenty twenty three,
it was kind of like you just felt like he
(41:48):
was playing with fire at times, even though he was
had he had a much better season than he's had
this year he could take away the injury. I just
it's it's tough to kind of resign myself to where
you're at because if it weren't for Spencer Arigheddy or
maybe the acquisition of a Kakuchi, you wouldn't even have
this conver It's you don't have a choice, right you do?
Speaker 3 (42:08):
Now, if Spencer goes out there and gives you a
bunch of good starts in a row, do you still
know he's gonna give you one when he starts in
a playoff game?
Speaker 2 (42:15):
No?
Speaker 3 (42:15):
No, But there's ways where again, there are three guys,
there's three sets of pitchers. The first two clearly Hunter
and Fromber you say, is in a different category, and
then the other three guys are in a separate category.
They don't have to make the decision today, which is awesome,
And they don't know what the situation is gonna be
when they get there, because are they playing a three
best of three series? Are they getting days off? Have
(42:36):
they ascended to a one or two seed? Obviously to
do that. All these things are still at play. But
it'd be nice if again they've they're nine and five
since he returned. If he's not pitching they're zero and four.
When he does pitch with like a nine something, you are,
I mean, it's just a balloon, all right.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Here's the deal. Two guys that the Astros needed back
in the lineup. He was obviously one of them. The
other is Kyle Tucker, who is dhing again. Today we're
gonna hear from Joe Aspata, who is here on Sports
Talk seven ninety earlier on Tuck when we come.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Back the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety two lifelong
Houston sports guys named Adam talking Your Teams series, Adam
Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
And now our number two here on the A Team
and Space City Home Network a little after four o'clock. Here,
time to get you situated on what's taking place over
at Minute Made Park tonight. Of course, our coverage we'll
begin with the Astros on Deck Show at six o'clock,
then into the game broadcast a little bit after seven
o'clock from Minute Made Park with Spencer Arraghetty facing JP Sears.
Earlier this weekend, it appeared their rookie pitcher would be
(43:50):
out there, but instead today the A's placed him on
the fifteen day il don't know if that's a season
ender for him, but he had been pitching well. The
Astros had seen him once before.
Speaker 3 (43:59):
Instead, they've seen quite a bit of the lefty JP Sears.
I don't know that it really would have even affected
at what Joe Espota would put out there. But before
we hear his comments about Kyle Tucker, this is the
lineup for the Astros tonight's Altuve, Alvarez and Tucker. Ac
just mentioned Tuck is dhing again tonight. So far, that's
all he's done in his three starts. Alvarez in left field,
(44:22):
Bregman Diaz Paynia, Bregman's at third, and when he throws
people out at first, it'll be Yiner Diaz catching the
baseball from him. Jeremy Paana, Victor Karatine, Jake Myers and
Chas McCormick outfit the rest of the order. And again
Chaz McCormick for him for sure on a little bit
of a heater since he returned to the team. Hopefully
(44:42):
this offense gets back the same mojo they had during
the Diamondback Series, where they scored well enough to win
three times, but didn't pitch well enough to win three times.
An appearance on The Matt Thomas Show weekly is made
by the manager.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Joe A.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
Spotty did so earlier today his thoughts about Kyle Tucker's return.
Speaker 7 (45:00):
Yeah, so, you know, always feels wonderful driving him in
the lineup. You know, the type of player he is
and the impact that he brings to our lineup and
the excitement he brings to our clubhouse and to our fans,
and so that part is great. And then now it's
you know, monitoring he's workload right now, you know, we
will know that he's not going to minor league rehab,
(45:21):
so we're trying to build up his volume, doing it smart,
doing it in a way where we can monitor even
more body sworness than anything. But he feels good. The
goal here is too, once we get over this series
here in Oakland, maybe get him in the outfield here
pretty soon in LA.
Speaker 3 (45:40):
So his return to the lineup has gotten the Astros
well a lot of base runners in the person of
Kyle Tucker. He's only had one hit in his nine
plate appearances, but he's been walked twice. He reached on
a catcher's interference. He was also hit by a pitch
his first appearance yep, and he also has a sack fly.
He's done things that help keep the line moving for
(46:01):
the most part. He scored a couple of runs, and
he's done so as the designated hitter each time. And
I think you can hear it from Joe that's by design.
I'm not sure if you guys think you can see
it when you see Kyle Tucker either running before games
or after games, during firework displays, or even on the basis.
He's been on the basis quite a bit here, but
it doesn't look like to me if the Astros were
(46:24):
in April or May, or if they were fifty and
seventy five, that he would be out there playing, because
it doesn't look like he's quite ready to do it.
But they're in no position to say we're good. We
got plenty of guys who can go out there and
get us hits and get out in the field and
be our DH. Everything's fine, take your time. They're not
in that position anymore, so that's not what they're doing.
(46:46):
He kind of addressed that again with Matt talking about
how they're going to handle him as they move forward.
Speaker 7 (46:53):
No, No, he's you know, he's ready. We just trying
to be smart as the emos and organization. You know,
it's it's conversations with him on how he feels, with
our training staff. We just got to make sure that
he's like our build up for him to be you know,
nine innings seeing the outfeel and we know how good
of a defender he is, so we want to make
(47:13):
sure that we that he's that he's good physically to
be able to do that.
Speaker 2 (47:19):
Here's the thing. If you were to tell me that
Verlander is going to have the issues he's having that
Bregman was going to and we're just talking about injuries, well,
I guess in the case of Verlander, I don't know
what we're talking about. I mean, miss two chunks of
the season for Insty, but right now, down the stretch
and then into the postseason, should all things go according
(47:41):
to plan, Verlander's a big question mark. And then physically
Bregman and Tucker are big question marks. And then you
factor in that the AL seems like it's wide open
more than ever. There's nobody you know, he's running away
with their division, at least of all the astros, but
you know they get in and everybody else gets in.
That you think is going to get in and they
(48:03):
go on a run and they win. This is going
to be easily the most satisfying of any of the
deep runs they would have made, just because of what
we're talking about right now. Listen to how we're hearing
the manager described. He's basically saying, yeah, if this wasn't
mid September, well, I mean, you know what I mean.
I kind of put words into his mouth, but it's true.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
He's he's in a situation where if they were at
that point in the season or had that record and
still planned on playing him, these games of play would
be at Corpus or in sugar Land, so he could
do those things to get his legs ready to go
seven to nine innings, to have the ability to go
back to back days. They're just not in that position.
They feel like they're better served at least getting his
(48:44):
presence in the lineup. I don't even want to say bat,
considering many of his appearances, he hasn't needed his bat.
He's managed to find his way on base. He used
his back to hit the catcher's glove that got him
on base, and he stood up there with a bat
and walked twice. So those things are helping the team.
There's one note about the A's line up, certainly worth
mentioning you don't have any clarity on it yet, which
could impact the game later in the evening. But Lawrence
(49:06):
Butler is not in the lineup tonight for the A's.
If you recall the last time the Astros and A's
got together, he was murdering baseballs. If I told you
over the last thirty days that Aaron Judge is number
one in the American League in ops and Jordan Alvarez
is number three in ops in the last thirty days,
and I've set it up this way, do you think
you can guess who number two is?
Speaker 2 (49:27):
Lawrence? Yes.
Speaker 3 (49:29):
The second most productive if that's what you want to
use hitter over the last month is Butler, and he
is not in the lineup. He would normally bat leadoff
Katse I assume will address that, just hasn't done. So
they were off yesterday, so I doubt he's being given
a second rest day in a row.
Speaker 2 (49:44):
You know what my big problem is though, Brent Rooker
is in the lineup.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
He's the DH and he has been awesome from the
beginning of the season. Yard five bombs, more homers, than
yord On, more steakes than Jordon, are just slightly lower average.
Speaker 2 (49:57):
N Ops, you didn't pitch to him the whole done.
I don't care. I really don't put them on base.
Speaker 3 (50:03):
Well, as much as that sounds great, I think people
have paid so little attention to the a's even with
us telling you and you paying attention to say that
they've won a bunch of games. Here after Rooker, they
send up guys. The next three hitters who bat three, four,
five have a combined fifty nine home runs. They still
hit the ball out of the ballpark. The guy after
that has another sixteen They can hit. They can hit
(50:26):
the ball out of the park. This is a park
unlike theirs in Oakland.
Speaker 2 (50:31):
Never been happier to not see Justin Verlander coming up
in the rotation with this lineup. They don't hit very well.
They just hit homers. Exactly why I said what I
just said.
Speaker 3 (50:40):
Yes, hopefully that won't play out tonight. And again, Spencer
Araghetti's line from his last start was prettied up a
bit when the error was assessed after the fact to
Jeremy Payne, but nonetheless he didn't get you three outs.
The bottom line was after that he also couldn't get
guys out, He could not keep guys from hitting the
ball where they wanted it to and hopefully tonight will
(51:00):
be a little bit different. Victor Karattini again is the
man behind the plate for him in this instance, and
this also begins a stretch where the team you're trying
to keep away from you keep behind you the majority
of their schedule. Now that they finished up that second
ten game road trip for Seattle is at home. I've
got another twelve games at home starting tonight with the
(51:21):
San Diego Padres. Granted, these teams they're playing, for the
most part, are good and are playing for something, so
it doesn't necessarily give them anything, but they're significantly better
at home. Haven't heard any definitive word injury wise on
Luis Castillo if you missed that over the weekend, he
was basically pulled from the game because he had some
sort of leg issue, a hamstring issue, and they just
really haven't given an update on exactly what his status is.
(51:43):
It did not look good, but you never know with
a pitcher, a veteran like that, if you can't just
felt like he needed to be taken out then and
might be Okay, moving forward, that clearly would be very
impactful for a team that wins with pitching.
Speaker 2 (51:56):
Yeah, I just it's a dangerous series he's going in.
Maybe it feels that way more so because of what
happened against Arizona and the finale. You got you to
remember the first two games that series went pretty well
for you against a team that was hot coming in
and could hit well as well.
Speaker 3 (52:15):
Yeah, a much better team who's hitting the ball about
as well as anybody in baseball came to town and
you handled them no problem until you gave them eight
runs before you scored any Is that bad?
Speaker 2 (52:25):
That's very bad. You've still scored six times.
Speaker 3 (52:27):
You still put offense on the board, and as you
look at the Astros coming down the stretch, that's the
thing that you It really is less about who you're
playing anymore. Like I don't expect the Astros to go
seven to zero against the Angels. I mean, the Angels
stink and all, but I doubt they're gonna win all set.
Speaker 2 (52:39):
At least ring zones playing for them again, he never
plays the Astros anymore since the World Series.
Speaker 3 (52:43):
Similarly, the Rangers have actually put together some good baseball lately.
And that's even with Corey c Er missing time. That's
seven games on the.
Speaker 2 (52:52):
When the Arizona Diamondbacks get there, quote revenge, that's the
dumbest thing ever. But it was the World Series rematch.
I mean it's it is a match. There they organizations
and that's it.
Speaker 3 (53:02):
One team is four games under and the other team
is Arizona.
Speaker 2 (53:06):
I love, man, you love to see it, you really do.
Speaker 3 (53:09):
I mean for that, Like I said, the Rangers are
only four games under. Yeah, they were much worse off
about two weeks ago. They've played good baseball, which is
good if they continue to do that against the Mariners.
Speaker 2 (53:20):
Correct, how many series do they have against them? Just one? Two?
They do have two? Okay, good? Yeah, I need them
to beat the ever loving you know what out of
the Mariners down the stretch. That's not what I would
have said, Hello Houston. Yeah, well you know, kind of
like what was beaten out of Justin Verlander the other night. Well,
it was something it's I'm confident in Arraghetty. You know
(53:46):
you were asking, you know, I had an unusual amount
of confidence in in uh Jose or Keaty every time
that he would have be on you know, scuffling, and
it was because of what he did as a rookie
in the World Old Series. Spencer Righetty's got that kind
of swagger. It's different, it's very.
Speaker 3 (54:06):
He's got Brandon Backey like swagger.
Speaker 2 (54:08):
He's got better stuff too. Yep and flow. I want
to see Spencer Arrighetty on a playoff mound badly, and
I'm I.
Speaker 3 (54:17):
Just don't have to start though. Does he Can he
come flowing in from the bully Nope?
Speaker 2 (54:21):
I want to see him start. I want to see
all the warm up to build up everything, and then
I want to see him absolutely blow away hitters that
think they're gonna have their way with a rookie. I
need that badly in my life, and I hope we
get it. But first things first got to start with
The A's tonight, and we will continue to discuss all
things Astros, Texans and more here on a Tuesday edition
of the show.
Speaker 4 (54:42):
The A on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (54:46):
I've got a feeling a lot of you guys are
gonna be flipping around tonight. There's a lot going on
in sports, but there's also a lot going on otherwise,
and so you want to have a reliable connection in
your home when it comes to the Wi fi. Because
let's just say I was gonna watch something on my
phone and then I was gonna watch something else on
another screen tonight. Maybe that's the situation I have. Well,
I'm gonna have a reliable connection thanks to Exfinity, and
(55:09):
you can too.
Speaker 8 (55:09):
Now.
Speaker 2 (55:10):
Through September twenty first, new customers to Exfinity can get
Exfinity Gig Internet for twenty five dollars a month for
two years. When you add Exfinity Mobile with unlimited data plus,
you're gonna get Peacock Premium, a seven to ninety nine
monthly value included. There's a pay per view coming up
this weekend that you can see on Peacock. Make sure
(55:30):
your home Wi fi can handle everything you throw at
it and then some by visiting Exfinity dot com, by
calling one eight hundred Exfinity, or by visiting a store
to switch today Exfinity bring on the good stuff.
Speaker 1 (55:44):
Back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler the eighty.
Speaker 2 (55:55):
During the break I was taking in a Boston College
press conference and it just reminded me, wex.
Speaker 3 (56:03):
You haven't updated our stone cold locks from age one?
Is that we too, did you over something else?
Speaker 2 (56:09):
Entirely? I don't think I want to look at mine.
Go ahead with what you were going to say, Well,
I was just going to say that. It reminded me,
once again, for the billionth time, how happy I am
that Bill O'Brien isn't coaching the Houston Texans anymore.
Speaker 3 (56:19):
Undefeated Bill O'Brien and the Eagles stopped into a big
game this weekend.
Speaker 2 (56:25):
It's all true. One time he apparently asked a member
of the pr staff why I hated him so much.
That's a verbatim quote.
Speaker 3 (56:33):
Now, if they had gone through the legwork to find
out the answer, what would it have been.
Speaker 2 (56:36):
That was before the David Johnson trade. So then I
had real ammunition. Well I had real ammunition before that.
Speaker 3 (56:43):
But BC heads into their game on the road at
number six missoo as a seventeen point underdog. BC also,
by the way, in the top twenty five according to
some of the rankings.
Speaker 2 (56:54):
You know who's in the top two. I know who's
in the top two. Who is it?
Speaker 9 (56:57):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (56:58):
The University of Texas football team didn't talk a whole
lot about that yesterday, And as we get closer.
Speaker 2 (57:03):
To the end, of the week.
Speaker 3 (57:04):
We'll probably sprinkle that in a little bit, but a
total dominating effort from them as they manhandled Michigan, and
I mean that they've out physicaled the Wolverines in their building.
And I think later this year maybe things would have
looked a little bit different from Michigan. They might not
even have the same signal caller later in the year
if things continue to be as much of a struggle
in the past game as they were. Even though I
actually think the kid has some talent, I think it
(57:25):
was just they were afraid of making any mistakes and
Texas kind of knew it, so they definitely took advantage
of it. And their quarterback, on the other hand, with
all of his experience and everybody else that has stepped
up in some injury situation, especially in the backfield, totally dominated,
moved up a couple of spots. Not everybody in the
top has played somebody of consequence, So it's really hard
(57:48):
for voters to get a good handle on what these
teams look like, and not a whole lot's changing this week.
There are very few awesome matchups to lock in on,
but there's a local one to lock in on that
will be our college football game of the week for
Stone Cold Locks. It's right down the street over at
td E CU Stadium. Cougar's looking for their first win
(58:09):
of the season after a very tough loss to Oklahoma
and a very disappointing loss to UNLV. They host one
in one Rice. Currently Koog's favored by four and a half.
Rice got their dub last week.
Speaker 2 (58:22):
I did better than I thought, now that I've looked
at the I had things play out for you.
Speaker 10 (58:26):
Well.
Speaker 2 (58:26):
I went three and two on the week, which means
I'm seven and three overall strong. So you guys are
all dead, No, I I was so upset, and you
know this because I texted you as much.
Speaker 3 (58:39):
That garbage ass late touchdown. Yes, but Texas has had
also said we have enough. They could have had fifty
probably had they wanted to. And I don't think you
took the under because he thought text will be up
so far they'll call off the dogs.
Speaker 2 (58:54):
Ideally a low scoring game. I told you they were
going to blow them out right, but win handily.
Speaker 3 (58:59):
They You were definitely correct on that, though you could
have just taken the Longhorns then, like I did.
Speaker 2 (59:04):
You know me and my overhunders it's what I have
to do. It's yes brand, that is true.
Speaker 3 (59:07):
I did manage to win four out of five after
losing four out of five, so no consistency for me.
That's exactly what Dan has provided first under You're very Texans.
He's gone two and three each week. So we'll head
into this week. We'll obviously lock in on the Texans
Bears game mentioned earlier. The Texans are six and a
half point favorites. Now wait till Friday to lock that in.
Our game of the week is Rice and You of
(59:28):
h We'll talk some college football later in the week
with Chris Gordy and expected to be joined by Fozzi Whitaker,
who joined us a little bit during the offseason. It's
part of SEC media Days. He'll actually be on the
call on the TV side for the Cougars and Owls.
He called the Missouri game last week, So a little
bit of that chatter coming your way as.
Speaker 2 (59:46):
The week continues.
Speaker 3 (59:48):
And we're pushing behind us these games that weigh very
little in the grand scheme of things in college football,
and pushing towards the conference games and the games against
T teams that we have a lot more knowledge of
and respect for to say, well, yes, now it actually
looks like that team is particularly good, rather than well,
they didn't play a team that could compete with them,
(01:00:10):
so let's wait another week to try to figure this
all out. But yes, Longhorns bumped up a spot or
two depending on your poll. And obviously the team they're
probably going to play twice maybe three times this year. Yep,
George's on their schedule after Texas ou Week, our seventh
game of the year. They got a brutal bet first
(01:00:31):
or second in the conference, both of them, and if
they do, they will meet again in the conference title game.
They will both qualify for the playoffs under that scenario,
and puld potentially play for a third time. They could
play for a third time before the national title game,
so you would definitely know who the better team is
by that point. It won't even matter. It would just
who won the third game.
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
Right right by the ways the national title game, then
it really well, then it's a little bit more on
the line then. Fazzi Whitaker single Ranch Paarland, that's right,
same color, the maroonish, that is right. That's why I thought.
I remember interviewing him a high school. That's why I
asked that I couldn't put my finger on which one
of the Maroon benefited. He I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 3 (01:01:10):
He was more of a foss wit then than Fozzy
as he has become. We called him Fozzy. There was
evidence still, yes, in the newsroom as it were back
in the day, it was my TV days. But yeah,
he was bruising running back. As I recall, bruising is
the kind of like Joe Mixon was for a smaller guy.
He was unafraid to run you over.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
I love Okay, So that perfectly describes Fred Taylor Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
Fred Taylor at Texans practice during this training camp, one
of the pivot crew.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
One of the nicest guys you will ever come across
who had that kind of stature. I thought he was
he was underrated because he played in Jacksonville. Frankly, I thought,
really solid pro and like I said, just a really
nice guy to interact with down there on the sidelines
because they come once a year obviously, but no, I'm
(01:02:03):
a I'm a big fan of his. But yeah, this
this Texas team I have. I feel good. I feel
like some big things could happen in the state of
Texas this year. And I'm not talking about Dallas. Does
that make sense to you? Yeah, that from a football perspective, sure,
it's just so random. Like Texas is having a very very.
Speaker 3 (01:02:24):
Random when you think you get the right coach and
he can recruit the right players and boom, everything's different.
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
Now, I'm just talking about the state in general, sports
wise is having a bit of a renaissance. And JJ
Watt mentioned this just about specifically the Texans. You know,
it's a very interesting time in Houston because you have CJ.
But like, look across the state, and the sad thing
is the Rockets might not even be in this conversation,
even though they clearly have their coach and they have
(01:02:53):
some good pieces. The Cowboys think that they're going to
do something they won't.
Speaker 3 (01:02:57):
Well, when you say look across the state, do you
only mean the law Horns and Cowboys?
Speaker 11 (01:03:01):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:03:01):
I mean the Spurs got Wimby and they think that
they've got, you know, a franchise cornerstone. Defending Western Conference
champs are in Dallas. I mean again, random did is
that two of the most random fluky runs in the
history of sports, the baseball and basketball teams in the
Dallas area doing what they did that they clearly will
not do this next year. I don't think yes on
(01:03:23):
the Rangers. No, on the MAVs.
Speaker 3 (01:03:25):
MAVs have one of the five best players in the league.
They should always find a way to be in the hunt.
It's been a they couldn't figure out who to put
with him. They figured it out this trade deadline and
put a couple of players out there that made a
ton of sense.
Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
They came out Klay Thompson's gonna be dragging his bad
leg around for them as well. And everybody thinks that
that's gonna put them over the top. It's not. It's
it's not. I I like the move.
Speaker 3 (01:03:45):
I don't think it's the The thing that's gonna put
them over the top is Luca continue to play at
an unreal level and Kyrie playing it. Klay Thompson is
their fourth, the fifth most important player. But he's gonna
start right, is he gonna finish?
Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
Okay? But here's the thing. What was in your own words,
the words, your own words shout out, Michael Barry. Uh,
what was what turned them around? It wasn't their offense.
It was the additions they made defensively, right, Klay Thompson
is a minus defender now.
Speaker 3 (01:04:18):
But he's not taking minutes away unless you think he's
on the court and you're losing something with s at.
Speaker 2 (01:04:23):
A shooter can shoot, right if you can shoot. Look
at del Curry, look at his former teammates, Dad. See
what I did there. That was a wex on brand comment.
You play forever if you can shoot the basketball. If
his job is to spot up in the corner and
just splash, great, But on the end of the other
end of the floor, you're taking away from someone who
(01:04:44):
can be a better defender than you that was contributing
to a finals appearance last year.
Speaker 3 (01:04:50):
Yes, but he's also he's not heavy minutes player.
Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
He's not.
Speaker 3 (01:04:53):
I don't think he's gonna quite impact him as negatively
as you see. But what you're saying is correct. And
when certain three Kuy's are on the court, Kyrie, Luca
and Clay, that's a very poor perimeter defensive team. It's
very much like when James Harden was on the floor
with whomever they could and absolutely tried to hide him
as a post defender, which was genius. I don't think
(01:05:14):
the MAVs can do that with Luca. They can't hide him. No, no,
his I mean the way they hide him is they say,
just don't play defense, so he doesn't.
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
It is uncanny the similarities between between him and James,
I mean uncanny everything except for off the floor. I
don't think Luca is frequenting some of the establishment. Well
he's not known for a fun time right. Oh yeah,
I'm not saying he hasn't ever been to one, but
he probably isn't gonna have his jersey retired in one
(01:05:45):
that happened.
Speaker 3 (01:05:46):
Here again, that's it wasn't the rafters and it did
have a number on it. Jersey, it's a little it's
very stretched. Well, like what's the equivalent, I don't know.
I mean that's what like, you go to a restaurant,
you go to a any type of business. If you're
a big enough, frequent, enough money spending enough customer, you
(01:06:07):
get treated differently.
Speaker 2 (01:06:08):
It'd be like if you went to a local steakhouse
and had you and your wife's faces etched.
Speaker 3 (01:06:14):
On the wall for eating the old ninety six or
no just because oh you mean the caricature.
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
Yeah okay, yeah, and then and then that went away.
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
Yeah, maybe James got like a free T shirt with
that like when you eat the eighty ounce.
Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
Ice quarterhouse or whatever. Yeah, it's that's we. This is
why other countries hate us. All Right, we are at
the halfway point on a Tuesday edition of The A
Team Sports Talk seven ninety. Say what coming up next.
Speaker 4 (01:06:40):

What are you talking about?

Man?
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
On a Tuesday?
Speaker 8 (01:08:14):
Way?
Speaker 11 (01:08:15):
What O day?
Speaker 4 (01:08:16):
How dare you now? Say what?
Speaker 2 (01:08:20):
That's right?
Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
Taking your segment time on a Tuesday is say what?
And really took place moments after we shut it down
for the day yesterday and turned things over to Ross
for another award winning edition of The Nightcap, and then
it continued for about five more hours.
Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
It began with the news that top.
Speaker 3 (01:08:41):
Draft pick for you fantasy footballers out there, Christian McCaffrey,
would be placed on the inactive list for the last
game of Week one, Monday Night Football in San Francisco
against the Aaron Rodgers led New York Jets. That seemed
to come out of left field based on how McCaffrey
(01:09:01):
himself had talked with the media over the course of
the week and even as recently as Friday about his
expected status dealing with a couple of different leg injuries Achilles,
et cetera. So that was a bit of a surprise,
a little bit of a wait, say what, the guy
I decided to draft with my first pick isn't even
(01:09:21):
playing in Week one and he was playing on Sunday night.
So I really don't have anything to do about it
now because I can't pick anybody up unless he's a
Jet or a Niner, and some smarter person in my
league already picked up Jordan Mason or drafted him at
the end of our draft, So that was kind of
an uncertain moment for a lot of people out there.
Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
Sucked for my team, which was probably I'll say this
because on Monday, you're done.
Speaker 3 (01:09:47):
You can't before anybody else in the esteemed Sports Talk
seven to ninety league can say it themselves, because I
don't believe it was said by any of the three
sets of hosts that hosted their programs today. Since Monday's
games and thus our fantasy football scores were completed, the
(01:10:10):
Mills High Club my ball club, managed to get a
win the Houston bad Ombres or how do you say
it again, the Houston.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Bad ombrais We're gonna clean him out.
Speaker 3 (01:10:22):
Unable to get a victory in their first game, and
the Stroud Boys Dan's team also unable to get a victory.
But I only bring it up for this reason and
this reason alone.
Speaker 2 (01:10:32):
We all suck.
Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
The three lowest scoring teams in Week one were our
three teams, and we were all awful. I happened to
get lucky and play Dan's team, so my offenbody had
to barely beat his awful team. We'll try to do
better moving forward. Having the right players available in advance
of the last game of the week might be helpful
(01:10:55):
for some of you out there speaking hypothetically, but it
really got to say what stage After Jordan Mason blew
up one hundred and forty seven yards, twenty eight catches
got in the Our twenty eight carries, one catch, five
yards found the end zone helped them pretty much dominate
that game.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
They beat the.
Speaker 3 (01:11:12):
Jets in a similar way to how the Texans beat
the Colts. In that Aaron Rodgers, like Anthony Richardson, they
were barely on the field.
Speaker 2 (01:11:21):
They just dominated the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:11:22):
So when you go out and have a game like that,
replacing Christian McCaffrey, it's a national TV game. Pretty good
odds that the PR staff is going to get a
request from Lisa Salters. Could we talk to Jordan Mason
after the game? Well, of course, so her question, and
it was a good one, about when did you find
out he'd be the starter, as in, we all found
(01:11:42):
out McCaffrey wouldn't be active just a couple of hours ago.
And his response to her was maybe Friday, Friday night,
something like that, So he wasn't Kyle told me Friday
that I would start. He didn't say that, but he
gave an indication that Friday, which is the last day
the injury reports go out, was the day he found out.
Friday night, long after it had gone out. But the
(01:12:04):
very same day, Christian McCaffrey had told the media how
confident he was that he would be playing. And so
when that happened and Mason said this, and then Mason
went to his postgame press conference at the podium, he
was asked about when he found out about it. He
just didn't even want to answer it because now he
kind of had caught wind of Well when they heard
you say that on the field. Now everybody's questioning how
(01:12:28):
the Niners handled their injury reporting for Week one of
the NFL season, a big old Jordan Mason giving them
a say what, man, I just ran for one hundred
and forty seven yards scored a touchdown. But because I
told Lisa Salters, I think I told her that I
was going to play, because Kyle probably told me Friday
night this is where we're going.
Speaker 2 (01:12:51):
Okay, So go back to last night, by the way,
since we're on the subject of this, and that was
just that's but that's life and fantasy. It just is.
Aaron Rodgers and the Jets are feeling what this afternoon
after last night's game, because look, it's there's no shame
(01:13:12):
in losing to the forty nine ers. There just isn't.
They're they're a good team. They're probably the prohibitive favorite
to come out of the NFC, even with what the
Lions have done both this season to start the year
and obviously prohibitive favorites, no question, Yeah, there's no. But again,
you've got to it'll probably get better. Can't we just
(01:13:33):
spin it in the worst way possible? Okay, go ahead.
Speaker 3 (01:13:36):
Another season opener for Aaron Rodgers with the Jets. Another
season opener where Aaron Rodgers can't finish the game to
Rodd Taylor stepping in to relieve Aaron Rodgers in the opener,
just as they had to do that last year.
Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
They're prevents. Is that not right?
Speaker 8 (01:13:52):
That?
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
Is that not an accurate depiction? Well, he was removed
from the game due to injury, whereas last night it
was to prevent oh, okay, injury. All right, Well I'll
take it back then. I mean, look at what happened
to Jordan Love.
Speaker 3 (01:14:04):
No, they did not have a lot of game, They
did not have a lot of plays. The Niners were
one of three teams Texans and Ravens the others that
ran seventy offensive plays. They had the ball for thirty
eight minutes and forty seconds. If not for the Texans,
that would have been the number one total time of
possession for the opening weekend. The Jets were unproductive with
some of their early possessions, punting over the opening possession
(01:14:27):
while gaining less than ten yards three and out and
then fumbling on possession number two.
Speaker 2 (01:14:33):
And they were in.
Speaker 3 (01:14:34):
A small hole because it was the Jake Moody Show
for the Niners last night. But it just kept getting
worse and worse. They had their one good drive it
looked like, Okay, these are the Aaron Rodgers Jets. We
all thought we might see feeding Wilson, feeding Breist Hall
and Aaron Rodgers running the show. And that was kind
of it for the rest of the night. Hil do
(01:14:54):
anything for five six drives in a row.
Speaker 2 (01:14:56):
How hilarious would it be not for the Jets, obviously,
if the Texans play them on Halloween and you know,
beat them up a year later, after the way things
went down last year without Aaron Rodgers out there with
that defense not only containing but eventually knocking out C. J.
Stroud for all of the second half and you know
(01:15:18):
a little bit of the first half there, and in
a year later, you've I mean, you've got your quarterback
back if you're the Jets.
Speaker 3 (01:15:27):
But it doesn't matter. It's just a great defense. They
played a very good team. Well they're great defense. I
totally agree with, but I can't say it because of
anything that happened last yea. They literally couldn't get the
Niners off the field. I mean, the Niners punted on
their opening possession, and then they scored and scored and
scored and scored and scored and scored and scored and
scored and then the game ended. They scored on every
possion until they kneeled it down at the end of
the game. Yeah, granted they kicked six times for three points,
(01:15:49):
but yeah, they got dominated. I don't this is a
lot of what we saw in Week one is not
hang your hat on a time.
Speaker 2 (01:15:56):
It's not this is who they are.
Speaker 3 (01:15:58):
I think he was a little hyper focused on his
two best weapons because it was all Hall and Wilson,
almost all night sands, the couple of throws, the smart
throw on the free play to Alan Lazard. But he
just seemed a little bit too focused in on that
it's not only their first game of the season, his
first game in basically two years, two seasons because he
(01:16:18):
missed essentially all of last season. So I'm not ready
to say that's who the Jets are, But since the
Niners haven't changed, I'm totally fine saying that is who
the Niners are. They went into the week as the
best team in the NFC. They come out of the
week is looking like the best team in the NFC.
A few other items to get to this hour, we'll
do that when we come back.
Speaker 4 (01:16:38):

Speaker 4 (01:17:50):
The Eighteam continues on Sports Talk seven nineteen.
Speaker 2 (01:17:58):
Back here on the A Team.
Speaker 3 (01:17:59):
One hour from now are extended summer of fun. I mean, heck,
we're into September. I hope everyone's enjoying their summer. We
do have giveaways for you in one hour from now,
we'll hit you with those. We've got tickets to go
see three Doors Down Finger eleven, the undercard of the
main event that night, which is Creed.
Speaker 2 (01:18:18):
So we've got tickets to go see Creed.
Speaker 3 (01:18:20):
And we also have tickets to see this weekend's game
we mentioned it earlier, our college football game of the
week for our Stone Cold Locks that is you have
Eh and Rice.
Speaker 2 (01:18:28):
Over at TDECU Stadiums.
Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
We've got pairs of tickets to give away today for
that football game.
Speaker 2 (01:18:34):
We'll do all that in an hour.
Speaker 3 (01:18:36):
We would encourage you, like we always do all summer long,
just listen to the show and you'll know how to
get your hands on those through that. In the final
segment of the show, spend a little bit of time
about the rest of the AFC South so far Monday
and now Tuesday, mainly because we talked about the Titans
and how they found a way to not beat the
Chicago Bears, the upcoming opponent for the Houston Texas. Haven't
(01:18:58):
talked hardly at all about the other team the AFC
South that lost this weekend was the Jacksonville Jaguars. And
even though I don't put all of it onto their quarterback,
who they're fully behind and have paid all of his
money too, and are locked into the Trevor Lawrence experience,
we've seen what happened to the Jaguars many many times before.
Jaguars come out of the gate, move the ball down
(01:19:20):
the field, put points on the board, look good, defensively,
put more points on the board. Twenty eight minutes into
their game against the Dolphins, they're up fourteen to nothing. Halftime,
they're up seventeen to seven. They kick a field goal
to close out the half. Things look good, and then
in the second half they forget that the game isn't
over and they actually have to do something to win,
(01:19:40):
and they do next to nothing. The one thing they did,
they even ended up shooting themselves in the foot in
the process. They had one good drive in the second
half and they ended it with Travis Etien letting Javon
Holland punch the ball out, which the Dolphins recovered, and
that was that Jaguars ten point lead at the half,
fourteen point lead late in the second quarter, and they
(01:20:02):
lose by three because their second half is punt punt fumble.
That was the fumble I just mentioned. They gave it
up on downs when they went for it on fourth
and short in deep in their own territory on their
thirty two yard line, and then they punted to close
out the game twice. The last of those punts came,
(01:20:23):
they gave the ball to Digsby.
Speaker 2 (01:20:24):
Bigsby.
Speaker 3 (01:20:25):
This is a situation where it's tied with about three
minutes to go. Run it on first down, get nothing,
Lawrence gets sacked. Then Lawrence gets sacked. Then they have
a false start, and they're punting in a tie game.
Fourth and twenty five with under three minutes to go.
Dolphin's got a few yards, kicked a long field goal,
beat them. The Jaguars are the definition of pretenders. They
(01:20:50):
just even though they did what I just described to
somebody else in the playoffs the one time they got
there with Lawrence, did that to the Chargers and flipped
a game comp letely. Most of their Trevor Lawrence era
post Urban Meyer, which hardly counts, has been full of man,
we should have won this game.
Speaker 2 (01:21:07):
Man, we played well enough to win. We just couldn't
do this.
Speaker 3 (01:21:10):
We just they they are finding ways to not be
in the upper half of the conference and certainly not
potentially in the race for this division. Again, I recognize
we're one week in, but it sure looks like we've
seen it before from them.
Speaker 2 (01:21:24):
What's the dumb thing their fans chant do vall or
whatever like the county they play in or some stupid
would you say, let's just take Sunday's game by itself.
Was that more on the offense not performing or the
defense giving up the points necessary for the Dolphins cause, again,
(01:21:44):
Tyreek Hill detainee notwithstanding, is always a threat. In fact,
their entire offense is just.
Speaker 3 (01:21:51):
It's upost of the half and have seventeen points and
you're playing the Dolphins. It doesn't really matter what the
score is. If you don't score again, you're probably gonna lose. Right,
So again I would say, who's that on?
Speaker 2 (01:22:01):
More?
Speaker 3 (01:22:01):
I think it's on their offense. I don't think the
dall of the Dolphins defense is quite ready, and they
have some names. I'm not gonna deny that, but they
also lost some names. I think they'll be good. I
just don't think they should be doing that just they
basically had one drive for thirty minutes and that's why
they didn't win. I mean, the Dolphins weren't awesome in
(01:22:22):
the second half. They scored one touchdown and kicked two
field goals and won on the last play of the game,
but they had a bunch of big plays then another
four hundred yard day. The Jaguars lost the turnover battle.
That was really the game. We described the turnover. It's
at the goal line, you're about to score a touchdown
(01:22:43):
and you lose the football. That's the whole game. Miami
didn't turn the ball over. Jacksonville's won turnover. If that
doesn't happen, they win.
Speaker 2 (01:22:50):
It's I mean, I've never been worried about them, but
it's when you think about and I know we say
this every single year, it seems like, especially lately at
the quarterback position. Do you remember the type of hype
that was attached to Trevor Lawrence like that was.
Speaker 3 (01:23:08):
It was just shy of Andrew Luck. Basically, I thought.
Speaker 2 (01:23:12):
Once in a generation, all the superlatives now, Andrew.
Speaker 3 (01:23:15):
Luck generation must be briefed to keep having these once
in a generations like here.
Speaker 2 (01:23:19):
In Houston, when we have those five hundred year floods
like once every other year. It's kind of similar much much,
not as not nearly as much fun not so.
Speaker 3 (01:23:27):
I don't like your timing on that comment with Francine
on the way it's gonna be some rain.
Speaker 2 (01:23:32):
I mean here right well, I mean we did our
time earlier this summer.
Speaker 3 (01:23:37):
No hope, it's just ridiculous. I don't hope it on others. No, no,
not at all, but I mean it is. I don't
even wors what we're talking about yesterday. This is a
two horse race. There's a foreseeable future.
Speaker 2 (01:23:50):
I mean, if you.
Speaker 3 (01:23:51):
Kind of again, I don't want to base everything on
one Sunday, but very little changed. If you branked these
thirty two teams based only on your belief in their
starting quarterback. I don't think a whole lot changed from
what we saw Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday. And Trevor
Lawrence is right there. He did not play very well.
He didn't do anything so bad that they couldn't win.
(01:24:14):
It's just kind of out there. Okay, oh hum.
Speaker 2 (01:24:18):
In a weird way. These two guys are the same guy,
they just go about it differently. I know you're about
to follow your chair, so just prepare for the two guys.
Trevor Lawrence Dak Prescott. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:24:28):
I don't Yeah, I'm I'm not gonna fall out of
my chair. I don't think we have the ability to
leave no cameras quite that quickly.
Speaker 2 (01:24:33):
You know what I'm getting at? Though? One is impressive
all the way until it's game time in the postseason,
when the lights are the brightest. Then he folds and
the other one has been given all the accolades and
we've been told that he's this, that and the other,
and he continues to just disappoint. It's just a different
because it's a quarterback, and because they both just got paid.
(01:24:54):
Is a real analogy I'm making here. They're obviously different
levels of quarterback. I take Dak over him ten out
of ten times.
Speaker 3 (01:25:01):
I had this conversation with some people that call the
Dallas Fort Worth area home. You've I've brought him up
on the show before signs his deal. Hours and hours
go by and finally someone texts, are we not going
to say anything about Dak Prescott's new deal. And then
the debates started, is he top five? Should they have
done this? Why did they do this? And we go
through all that, and it was a tiny chore to
(01:25:23):
make sure he wasn't a top five quarterback. You know,
I think we know who the top three are Alan
Jackson and Pat Mahomes. Not Alan Jackson though, right, And
then the next group includes c. J. Stroud, and then
the next group, which isn't far behind, includes Dak Prescott.
Maybe there's four or five, six, and maybe Dak squeezes another.
He's that close. Trevor Lawrence isn't and has never been
(01:25:47):
in the discussion yet in his career.
Speaker 2 (01:25:49):
He's bored.
Speaker 3 (01:25:50):
Maybe you could convince me he's top twelve, but he's
not one of the top five or six quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (01:25:55):
He's never played like that. Yeas fifteen, Dak has he's fifteen,
that's his number. Okay, he's fifteen.
Speaker 11 (01:26:01):
He is.
Speaker 2 (01:26:01):
He just screams, you know who he is, you.
Speaker 3 (01:26:03):
Matt shob But you got to realize who else is
out there. There's only thirty two of them, and some
of them clearly stink. Others are kids. There's not that
many people who clearly will outplay him. Yet it's a
matter of is he going down the list or is
he going up the list?
Speaker 2 (01:26:16):
That might even be an insult to Matt Shob at
this point, pre Richard Sherman picked him off for a
pick six and ended his career, we just didn't know
it was the beginning of the end, Matt Job. That's
what I mean. Pre that version of Matt Shob. Five
o'clock hour coming up next, and it will begin, as
always with a football at five conversation. You want to
(01:26:36):
hear from Joe Mixon, you'll hear from him next.
Speaker 1 (01:26:40):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety two lifelong
Houston sports guys named Adham talking your team. Adam Clinton
and Adam Wexler are the A Team, a.
Speaker 3 (01:27:06):
Knock in on some football talk as we use each
shit every day. When channeler Rome doesn't join us at five,
it's five o'clock, so it's time for football at five.
And last night's Mason rushing performance was pretty spectacular all
things considered, where he was in their roster, composition, et cetera,
and playing against what we thought was a pretty good defense.
(01:27:26):
But all it did was make Jordan Mason the second
leading rusher in the NFL twenty eight carries one hundred
and forty seven yards and the tuddy a little bit
better for Joe Mixon thirty carries, one hundred and fifty
nine yards touchdown and five point three yards of pop
slightly better than Mason all across the board, and this
is the player we kind of opened the show talking
(01:27:48):
about the credit for the general manager on both who
they sought out and a plan that was in place
for if the player they sought out, Saquon Barkley did
not end up being a Texan. To be go, Ryan's
calling it a perfect fit. I think Joe Mixon talking
about how this offense suits him at different times during
the off season did kind of play out. They've been
(01:28:09):
a couple of different people on the interwebs and on
social media and on TV football analysts that have pointed
out some of the very very high level offensive line
play the Texans got this week. High level could often
be translated into work at the second level, and that's
what a lot of their interior players, specifically Kenyan Green,
(01:28:30):
were able to do something we had just did not
see a whole lot of with Damian Pierce and Devin
Singletary running the ball in twenty twenty three. I don't
really care to discuss anything that happened before that. It's
not relevant to who the coach, the scheme, or the
players were. But to see such a difference between this
year's group five players who were all Texans last year
(01:28:51):
and this group, that's a big deal. That's something that
you'd like to think you can replicate to me because
they played a good defensive front. They played a strong
and athletic defensive front I thought would be one of
the toughest to go up against if you were trying
to establish the run, put a game away with the run,
and the game literally with the run. They did all
(01:29:14):
those things, and a lot of that credit goes to
the offensive scheme, the offensive coaches, the play calling, the
blocking that includes the tight ends and other players that
were out there. But clearly Joe Mixon is a nice
fit to have here and a player that I think
really does I don't know that all players get this,
and I don't know if it's even accurate to say
he did.
Speaker 2 (01:29:33):
He was on a very good team.
Speaker 3 (01:29:35):
He's actually been through this before a second year with
Joe Burrow getting to a level I don't think everybody
was sure they could get to, but maybe the guys
in the locker room. But what I'm really getting at
is he'd been there for all these years, and now
he's has a new opportunity, and I feel like there's
a little bit of extra juice to what he brings
(01:29:55):
to the table for this team.
Speaker 2 (01:29:57):
Well, okay, here's the deal. There's not too many quarterbacks
where you would say, all right, I'm gonna leave playing
with Joe Burrow, and I'm not going to be disappointed
when I get to where I am because the guy
who will now be handing the ball to me is
I don't know, fill in the blank like guy.
Speaker 3 (01:30:15):
He's the guy that I watched beat us last year
in our building. And again, I don't know how much
offensive players are totally locked into the game. Quarterbacks usually aren't,
but other players while they're seated on the sideline or
whatever their routine is, which normally offensive players are seated
on the bench when the defense is on the field,
they're still well aware of it. You're usually sitting there
not really able to see what's happening because there's thirty
(01:30:37):
five people standing in front of you. But if you
ever at a game you looked out at a team's bench,
the opposite side of the ball that's on the bench.
All they're doing is kind of talking to each other,
and then after the roar of the crowd, they're looking
up at the screen. They want to see what happened.
They want to watch the play because they really didn't before,
and they also have things to do to prepare for
their next trip out there. But yes, he was there,
(01:30:58):
and yes they're aware of what has happened. And I
do think what you're saying is true. We definitely heard
it in the postgame locker room from Stefan Diggs. He
basically said, he makes my life a wide receiver's life easy.
You saw some of those things in camp, and now
you're seeing him in a game to the tenth level,
you know, paraphrasing what he said.
Speaker 2 (01:31:14):
Yeah, it's all out there.
Speaker 3 (01:31:15):
Some of his teammates were also correctly speaking glowingly about
Joe Mix and Joe Mixon himself one of the two
Texans that went to the post game podium, just talking
about a number of different things about his game and
the way this team plays.
Speaker 12 (01:31:28):
I'm just, you know, finally really getting tapped into you know,
the player that I know I am for a I'm
just glad man that I'm probably wanted to for, you know,
forefront person to really set the tone and let people know,
you know what it is, you know, playing us, and
you got guys like Nik out there and making huge plays,
and CJ being CJ, and Steph coming in and making
(01:31:51):
crazy plays, even Tank and everybody just complimenting each other
to run, compliment in the past and the past complimenting
to run.
Speaker 11 (01:31:57):
Man.
Speaker 12 (01:31:57):
So we got a hell of a thing that guy
going on. We's got to keep getting better each end
every week.
Speaker 2 (01:32:03):
So they play complimentary football.
Speaker 3 (01:32:04):
According to him, he didn't want to go Bill O'Brien
on everybody, so he refused to use that word. It
was very balanced and it was. He's right though in
the first thing that he said, it's a tone setter.
It's hard to set the tone because that brings a
physical connotation to the comment. I think by passing the football,
and by the way, passing was way down in Week
one and rushing was way up compared to this point
(01:32:25):
last year.
Speaker 2 (01:32:26):
One game in. We'll see if that plays.
Speaker 3 (01:32:28):
But setting a tone, it almost automatically says to me,
if others feel differently, say so, it sounds to me
like you're said, Yeah, we've set the tone because we
got physical with him and we ran the ball. We
dictated the way the game was going to go for
us because we could run the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:32:43):
Well, look, everybody wants to see CJ fling it because
that's a today's NFL and b well, CJ, you want
to see that. But if the Texans, if Bobby slow
It and Demiico, Ryans and the rest of the coaching
staff and frankly the organization can save CJ from any
(01:33:03):
sort of damage via hitting him because he's not standing
back in the pocket and you're handing the ball off
to Joe Mixon because it's working. And oh, by the way,
when every running offensive attack works, you're churning clock. That's
tying the other quarterback and his offense can't be on
the field hurting your defense. I mean, you're crazy if
(01:33:25):
you don't think that's how they're going to go about it. Yeah, Cup,
I totally agree. It would be doing that. It probably
need to flip it at some point in the future.
While they may be protecting their quarterback, they're probably limiting
their running back. He's not going to be a thirty
three touch per game play. Why not, let's put it
get up to forty. Come on, let's run this guy today.
Speaker 3 (01:33:43):
Win that day. If he has a forty touch day,
they will win that day. I think we can be
confident in saying that A couple of his teammates I
think noted the work that he had put in and
certainly wanted to mention that. One of them, in particular
Tank Dell, who met with the media yesterday or at
the facility a day after the game, a little bit
on this offense with Joe Mixon.
Speaker 13 (01:34:03):
Joe run the ball like that, man, It's gonna open
up the past game a lot. You know, rpo, downfield shots,
things like that. And when we're taking shots and we
get to make them back up, you know, Joki Kee
running the ball? How you running the ball?
Speaker 11 (01:34:15):
Man?
Speaker 13 (01:34:15):
Joe had an amazing game. Man, We're gonna build out
that for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:34:18):
Would you say, looking back at the thirty two attempts,
uh CJ. Stroud, there was really only one shot play.
Like Tank was referring to, moving forward, it's going to
open up all those things. The shot play, obviously, the
completion into double coverage to Nico Collins. They had some
longer completions, but I wouldn't call any of them shot
plays unless I'm recollecting incorrectly. I think that was the
(01:34:41):
shot when you throw the ball thirty plus yards air
yards down.
Speaker 2 (01:34:44):
Because I don't think the play where and it was
Nico Collins that came down with that one.
Speaker 3 (01:34:50):
That's a third and fourteen scramble. I got to get
rid of the ball, so we have to have a
chance here. I wouldn't call it a shot, but it's
because it's a broken.
Speaker 2 (01:34:56):
Play, and it's a shot, a gut punch play, and
he put it where only the receiver could get it.
Even though there were two defenders in the general vicinity,
I'm not gonna say they were closing necessarily to where
it could have been picked off. It's the one. It's
basically the one scenario in that scenario where I would
be okay with it because I didn't think they could
get to it. But yeah, that's.
Speaker 3 (01:35:18):
Probably true, So I do think he's right. And RPOs
was another thing that Tank mentioned. If you have somebody
that they're unable to stop. You had the ball to
Joe Mixon on a first down and now it's second
and five or second and four. You're golden if you're
giving him the ball on third and three and he's
getting the first down repeatedly. He had more first downs
running the football than any other player in the league
this weekend. Granted he also carried it thirty times, but
(01:35:39):
his success rate, which is kind of a great of
how many yards of the necessary game you needed on
first or second or third down, and they graded out
off that it was the highest by so much it's
ever been grant Again. Mind gosh, I wish I wasn't
saying it over and over it. It's just one week.
I totally get it. But there's some things just so
far beyond what Joe was doing with you know, even
(01:35:59):
in four week stretches during a time with Cincinnati, you know,
his yards per touch at this unbelievable level. He did
not have a whole lot of wear and tear on
him from camp, if you recall how little he was
out there.
Speaker 2 (01:36:12):
He's fresh.
Speaker 3 (01:36:12):
He did play in the joint practice against the Rams
on Thursday, and I think that was the only thing
that was left for him to do following his time
away to say, yeah, he's ready to go. And they
saw all they needed. I was out there that day.
We saw a guy that was perfectly ready to go.
And then he got another two weeks away, two weeks
of not needing to play, not needing to be tackled,
not needing to take all those tough reps, and I
(01:36:35):
think you're seeing a guy that is ready to handle
a strong workload. A little it's dictated by where you
are in the game. But this wasn't a we're up
huge like the Niners, We're just gonna give Jordan Mason
the ball twenty eight times. It wasn't anything like that.
They needed him to continue to be successful.
Speaker 2 (01:36:54):
If he had one hundred and fifty one or one
hundred and fifty two yard yards, they might not have
won the game because his last carry on third and three,
instead of being for nine yards, would have been for
one and two.
Speaker 3 (01:37:07):
They would have punted. Probably the other team would have
the ball down too, with a little bit of time left.
His last carry was a game clincher, right, But what
set it.
Speaker 2 (01:37:17):
Up was the pass to uh to Nico Collins because
and it was funny because, as you're probably well aware
by now, Pat McAfee was there at the game, rooting
on his colts.
Speaker 3 (01:37:29):
Almost had as good as seats as Tyres Haliburton. But
he did behind him.
Speaker 2 (01:37:33):
He didn't do any He didn't do anything by way
of making me, you know, a big fan of his
anymore than because I'm a lifelong fan.
Speaker 3 (01:37:41):
Now after he's self deprecated with his tweet about not
contributing to the group project and walking away with a
gold mess.
Speaker 2 (01:37:47):
All it took, That's all it took. He preened a
little too much from my liking against the Rockets last year.
So he's publicly one rushing and throwing up bombs one
of the other game not so much that is true,
but yeah, Pat McAfee was like, this is the game.
This is the game right here. This this catch by
Nico Collins. That's actually where it's over. Because even if
(01:38:08):
Joe Mixon doesn't get that first down by the time
you do punt it, there's not a lot of time.
Now now Anthony Richardson doesn't care, he might fling in
another sixty yards.
Speaker 3 (01:38:17):
Would have been a minute left. He got the first
down on a snap that was off at one forty eight,
they would have been punting with a minute on the
clock or going for it. If they show chose yeah,
which I doubt, I very seriously doubt. Nonetheless, that's football
at five.
Speaker 1 (01:38:33):

we get a little bit closer to first pitch. Obviously,
we've got Astros Baseball for you here on Sports Talk

for Astros Baseball on the TV side Space City Home Network.
Appreciate all of you watching and listening over these last
(01:40:02):
couple of weeks with our simulcast each and every weekday
afternoon from three to six, or whenever the Astros aren't
playing baseball and time permits. Thursday's finale of this three
game series that gets underway tonight is one such day.
Speaker 2 (01:40:14):
With that afternoon game.
Speaker 3 (01:40:15):
We'll actually come to you from the ballpark for the
tenth inning show after the Astros a's wrap things up
JP series tonight, the lefty facing the Astros and their
right hand or Spencer Arraghetty a little bit more on
that before we close up shop and hand things off
to Ross for the Astros on deck program. One other
baseball notes, since I brought it up earlier, we do
(01:40:37):
have clarification now on Mariner's starter Luis Castillo. His hamstring
issue is a Grade two left hamstring strain. I means
there's a terror he is headed to the fifteen day il.
There are barely more than fifteen days left in the season,
and it would not suggest that he's going to He's
definitely not going to be at his best if he
(01:40:57):
pitches again this year, and that obviously opens the door
for them to need somebody they've barely needed all year.
Wu is really the only starter that had missed time
up until this point in the season. Two astros of
their rotation one hundred percent perfect analogy.
Speaker 2 (01:41:13):
They have managed their way through the season.
Speaker 3 (01:41:15):
Some people like myself have said, oh my god, he's
thrown eighty eight pitches. Better get him out of the game. Well,
they keep making every single start, so something is working.
Kirby Miller, Wu Castillo have have made it very easy
for them to compete. Their offense has made it very
uneasy for them to win. But again, they got a
bunch of home games coming up. Their series this evening
(01:41:38):
with the Padres. Short series with them begins tonight. We're
talking about the Texans offense. We've shown Joe Mixon a
ton of love. Take Dell back on the field for
the first time in well since he was hurt in
an regular season NFL game, and we've talked about the play,
the shot play we just talked about last segment to Nico.
We talked about the play you brought up on the
(01:42:00):
ramble finding somebody throwing across your body, and there was
Nico who had perfectly separated from both defenders giving what
is normally a dangerous and cringe worthy don't throw that yes,
great throw catch, and then of course the game winner
or the drive continuer, the third down throw gets the
knee down nearly end of the game, extends that drive,
(01:42:20):
lets the clock keep running. There's so many individual plays
I almost feel like we've missed the obvious point. And
I brought it up when Stan was with us yesterday.
He's been a Colts killer since the moment c J.
Stroud joined him as his pass throw Nico Collins against
the Colts secondary is a massive loss for Indianapolis. Whatever
the game scenario is, whatever they've decided to scheme up,
(01:42:43):
whomever they've had on the field, and it's how many
different plays can we now recall, and we're only talking
about three games they played them at the beginning of
the season last year kind of when CJ. Figured it out.
It was Game two and the Texans were down by
a lot of points. Bobby Slowk brought it up this offseason.
That's kind of when we saw he had a grasp
for the offense. We were moving the football that granted
(01:43:04):
they were doing it in a negative scoreboard position and.
Speaker 2 (01:43:06):
They didn't even win the game.
Speaker 3 (01:43:08):
And then when they had to have it at the
end of the year, they opened the game with a
seventy five yard touchdown and he ran behind the defense
one number that I saw earlier today, I did not
know from Sunday's game. You have the second fastest speed
of any receiver on that play where he outran the
two defenders. Remember CJ underthrew him slightly on that catch,
that fifty five yard catch. He was able to go
(01:43:30):
up in between those two defenders to get it. There
was a reason CJ slightly under threw it. He was
under duress and didn't really have a chance to full
follow through four hundred and fifty eight yards in three
games against the Colts with CJ as his quarterback. I
think most of you matth Wizards can figure out that's
better than one fifty per He's been better than one
(01:43:51):
hundred in all of them.
Speaker 2 (01:43:52):
He s was t Y Hilton's numbers average against the Texas.
Speaker 3 (01:43:55):
They sound familiar, And you know, I was kind of
looking back after I said what I said yeah yesterday
that I think Nico's a better receiver. T Why's career
clearly blows Nico away, and he had a couple of
monster seasons early in his career, but his numbers were
so good against the tex Because I still think what
I said holds water, but I don't I don't want
(01:44:16):
to make it sound like I don't think t Y
Hilton was a really, really really good NFL wide receiver.
Speaker 2 (01:44:21):
It's kind of how it sounded yesterday, But.
Speaker 3 (01:44:22):
I really I think Nico Collins will continue to show
that he's at that level. Tank Dell again commenting on
what I brought up a lot of because I'd heard
him say it earlier in the day Monday, that Collins
versus the Colts, that's kind of a must see viewing
for Houston fans.
Speaker 13 (01:44:42):
No, I don't know, Nico might not like him or some.
I don't know, man, Nico got some gives him with
some I don't know. Because every time you step out
of there versus like you go crazy, man, and just
to watch Nico, you know, hone in on the balls
that was coming to him and made those plays, big
time moments like that third down grab his knee on
the sideline, Like that's just who is make plays all
(01:45:04):
over the field. So I was happy for him.
Speaker 3 (01:45:06):
Played this stuff that Tamiko said right after the game,
big time plays. He's a big time playmaker. He's someone
we can look to. And he didn't say this part,
but they can look to any one of those three
guys whenever they need to.
Speaker 2 (01:45:17):
When I mentioned Pat McAfee last segment when he was
talking about that exact play and where he was in
relation to it, because I think he was from the
opposite sideline watching it and he sees CJ basically gathering
to make that throw, and he was like, no bleeping
way he caught that. And if you were like me,
I don't know what you were thinking. When I was
watching it, I was like, there's no doubt he's catching
(01:45:38):
it because he always does it. He's a tight rope.
Speaker 3 (01:45:40):
I spurt, not like you really you taught his coverage.
It's gonna be a jump ball. Even when you're the
taller player, you're the offensive player. Both of those are
big advantages I think to catching it. They might still
knock it away, but there's so much traffic he's not
going to go way. He had to slow up, and
they're gonna be draped on him, so he's not gonna
really be able to Like. This isn't in the end
(01:46:02):
zone where you run your route specifically to go up
and catch a pass that's specifically thrown at that height.
Speaker 2 (01:46:08):
This is a.
Speaker 3 (01:46:09):
Ball coming down on a long, looping, arching bomb. I
did not think he was gonna be able to grab
that ball with four hands and two bodies all over him.
Speaker 2 (01:46:18):
I wasn't being clear. I'm talking about the sideline. Oh, yes,
I'm with you, okay, Yeah, did you not think the
whole way, Oh he's catching this? Ad said, oh, it's incomplete.
Well here's the yeah. But immediately saying it was incomplete,
look at the sideline, and there wasn't a single guy
that wasn't saying, oh my gosh, he caught that, like
we were all saying it. And that's why it was
(01:46:40):
so funny to hear Pat McAfee again. I bring him
up simply because he was He is a staunch supporter
of not only the Colts. He's a big CJ fan,
much to his own chagrin. I mean, he's as just
as much of a Colts killer. I mean, there has
to be a guy on the other end of those passes,
and man he is.
Speaker 3 (01:46:58):
He's only they're only two in one in these three games.
They just went over five hundred against the Colts with CJ.
Speaker 2 (01:47:04):
Yeah, I didn't feel like that does not feel like
seven to one the game at the end of the season.
I know they all count the same understanding. It was
a playoff game exactly. And the play you're talking about
that opened up that game. That was another tone setter.
It wasn't a run, you're right, I mean and so,
but to see him gathering for that pass and again
(01:47:25):
you hear it. It sounds cliche. Well, the quarterback put
it where only the receiver could get it. But that's
the exact example of that. That's DeAndre Hopkins. Yeah, it was.
He's if it was hot, he would have caught it
with one hand and figured out a way to do it.
Speaker 3 (01:47:39):
He did so many times here, he did it a
few times in Arizona. He's probably done it once or
twice in Tennessee. But my goodness, those are plays that
you got a little trust in your guy, and it
wasn't quite that because had he thrown it the way
he wanted to, Nico would have been behind the defense.
It would have looked exactly like the Alex Pearce touchdown,
got behind two defenders and the ball just couldn't quite
get there. That's another reason why the Anthony Richardson throw,
(01:48:00):
who was also under duress. He had even slipped on
the play and Derek Barnette was destroying the pocket right
in front of him, in his face, and he still
made that throw. A player we haven't talked hardly at
all about, and I think that's about to change, like
this week as he's chasing around. Caleb Williams is will
Anderson Junior, and in camp he early on stopped playing,
(01:48:20):
dealing with a lower leg issue. They had a plan
to have him ready for the opener. He took his
full allotment of snaps, which is not one hundred percent.
He's d ND he's not going to play one hundred
percent of the snaps, but he acknowledged.
Speaker 2 (01:48:31):
There was a little bit of rust he needed to
work off.
Speaker 3 (01:48:33):
And I still fully support their plan of having him
ready to go for the opener and then hopefully the
remaining sixteen games of the season. He did still talk
about some of the things he thinks could have helped
them on Sunday, and hopefully he can't help them moving forward.
Speaker 11 (01:48:45):
Like I said, man, we got to get home. We
got to do a better job rushwood, integrity, getting off blocks,
getting separation on blocks. Man, I think we do a
really good job of collapsing the pocket. I think that
next step is just getting off bucks and finishing at
the quarterback. Man. And I think the injury, God's pushing
the pocket. Us God's push in the pocket, and now
it's just time to get off a box. But man,
like I said, they're gonna make plays. How do we respond?
And I think we respond the right way.
Speaker 3 (01:49:06):
I think he's probably right if you go back and
look at the pressures numbers versus say the sacks and
the hits. As the official box says, they're two sacks,
just two sacks. Granted there was only so many dropbacks,
and they both came from their interior defensive linement. They
also only have two quarterback hits. But I guarantee you,
just like he said, and I have not seen the
(01:49:27):
official so called pressure numbers, and a lot of different
entities produce them a little bit differently. They were forcing
him via pressure to move up in the pocket, try
to move up in the pocket, roll out, do different things.
He wasn't throwing that many passes from a completely clean pocket.
And what Will Anderson also added was, yeah, great, now
we need to finish those plays which they just weren't
(01:49:49):
unable to do against one of the tougher guys to
bring down.
Speaker 2 (01:49:52):
With Mario toical. But that's true. This is kind of rhetorical.
Denico Audry's in there. They get to them more, right.
Speaker 3 (01:49:59):
I think, Cause well, I don't want to act like
the interior guys didn't play well.
Speaker 2 (01:50:03):
I think they did.
Speaker 3 (01:50:04):
But I do think Autrey's spot with this team out
how it's now constructed, is probably still more as the
guy who pairs with Barnett as the second set of
edges when you pull Hunter and Anderson off the field,
So kind of different different ways to look at in
different ways they might attack it. But clearly this is
a guy who's double figure sack guy two years in
a row, has a long career of getting into the backfield,
disrupting plays and he's unavailable for five more games for
(01:50:27):
the Texas. A few items we've not yet had a
chance to discuss that makes up. In case you missed it.
Speaker 4 (01:50:34):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety I.
Speaker 3 (01:50:38):
Gotta tell you about something that goes great with all
we just talked about the last half hour, because we're
talking about football. An ice cold, refreshing bud Light goes
tremendously well with it, whether it's Sunday morning and tailgating,
whether it's Sunday afternoon into the evening with your Texans
as your tailgating in advance of this Sunday's home opener.
Bud Lights the official beer sponsor of the NFL. It's
(01:50:59):
easy is Sunday, It's easy to enjoy. It's all part
of your great Sunday traditions revolving around football, bud Light Beer,
Anheuser Busch, Saint Louis, Missouri.
Speaker 4 (01:51:09):
Is Kyle Tucker. Catch every Astros game on Sports Talk
seven ninety right Tucker the Golo Globber and streaming on
the free iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (01:51:20):
Well, in case you missed it, is here.
Speaker 3 (01:51:22):
In case you missed it, Kyle Tucker is in the
lineup tonight after yesterday's off day is third game to
be played since his return. All three, including tonight, will
be as the Astros designated hitter. You'red on Alvarez and
left bats in front of him. Alex Bregman at third
bats behind him. This is in case you missed it,
So before we call it a day, probably right after
(01:51:43):
this segment. In our final segment, we got a little
lineup chatter about what's being put out there by Joe
a spot. But a few items we need to get
into here at least make you informed of.
Speaker 2 (01:51:53):
So what do you have for us today? Dan?
Speaker 8 (01:51:55):
All right, so last night we had a Manning cast.
We had Peyton eli, Bill Belichick stop by, Adam Sandler
stopped by, as well as Chris Jones from the Chiefs.
During this particular time, Bill Belichick was on you'll hear
from him during this clip. But it was a throw
into the end zone that Brandon Nyuk was unable to
come down with as he dove and tried to make
(01:52:16):
a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:52:16):
Catch up.
Speaker 8 (01:52:17):
Leave right before the half and see if you can
catch how angry Peyton Manning was by that play.
Speaker 7 (01:52:23):
Okay, he's a little rusty pet, you know, he's missed
all training camp, Get signed, getting training camp.
Speaker 4 (01:52:28):
There's a reason for training camp when you need it.
We need the reps.
Speaker 2 (01:52:33):
Get those contracts done earlier so we can get in
training camp. We don't drop balls on opening night.
Speaker 12 (01:52:38):
You're still catching balls in a high school field from
some quarterback that's.
Speaker 2 (01:52:43):
Forty five years old my age.
Speaker 4 (01:52:44):
You're not catching balls from your quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:52:46):
Get signed, get in camp, and we don't drop the ball.
Speaker 8 (01:52:49):
There's a little Vanderjat rant in there from an idiot,
drunk kicker.
Speaker 3 (01:52:54):
So you know, Peyton Manning and contract holdouts didn't really exist,
didn't happen, and it was not a not something that
he and I know, we just kind of ran up
to it with Dak, who obviously practiced every day during
camp without an extension. It's clearly under contract, as most
of these situations are. It's the other players that do it,
(01:53:14):
and we know it's I don't really blame him at all.
And even though the deal he got really was very
similar to the deal he could have signed weeks and
weeks and weeks ago, I don't think he dropped that
ball because you know, we didn't. You know, one thing
we didn't bring up the whole day because we like
Nico like. He had a ball almost very similar to
the Iyuke drop from CJ. Stroud was one of Stroud's
(01:53:34):
best throws of the day to the right sideline. I
went right through Collin's midst hit him in both hands.
These catches aren't easy. You don't make one hundred percent
of them. You don't normally have. It happened during a
Manning cast, so Peyton can beat you down, but he
decided to do that.
Speaker 2 (01:53:50):
He was upset a few things last night.
Speaker 3 (01:53:52):
I am a big viewer of that on most nights,
usually when there's not a cable dispute of some sort
but they're playing. If you were unaware, Dan mentioned Belichick
was with him at that time. He's a permanent guest.
He will be a part of the Manning casts usually
will be expected to be their first half guest each week.
(01:54:12):
They got ten more of these regular season games, and
then they'll have the wild card game and then, as
you mentioned, a couple of guests that we know late
in the week who will appear with him.
Speaker 2 (01:54:21):
It was Chris Jones and Adam Sandler this week. Did
you see Adam Sandler's tease for the Happy Gilmour sequel.
Speaker 3 (01:54:29):
Was he at a discount store and saw one of
his old hockey jerseys.
Speaker 2 (01:54:33):
And did he accompany it by the final number from
Leonard skinnerd Yes music? Yeah, very good stuff. What else
we have? All right?
Speaker 8 (01:54:40):
So Auburn lost over the weekend, that's not the story.
Their quarterback was on The Next Round Live, which is
an online show based out of Alabama, and he was
talking about whenever they lose, there's pressure that comes with
the job. But in this case right here, it's what
he has asked for if they lose a game.
Speaker 10 (01:54:59):
In today's world, they they come at you at all different angles.
You know, you hear it verbally that's probably the least one,
but you know, just walking down the street here sometimes
and then obviously see the social media is the h
on venmo all types of stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:55:12):
They're coming after your venmo Peyton. They're like, ja, explain
that one to me.
Speaker 4 (01:55:16):
I've never heard that they send you cash.
Speaker 10 (01:55:19):
No, they're definitely not sending a cash You know. It's funny.
When they lose money, they want the money back, but
when they win money on a parlay.
Speaker 3 (01:55:30):
That's basically the fantasy football equivalent. People in fantasy football
are commenting dming uh responding on social media to players
that keep them from winning their game when they dropped
the ball or didn't run for this number of yards,
or were unable to play.
Speaker 2 (01:55:46):
In the game.
Speaker 3 (01:55:46):
And now he's saying on venmo because they've cost them
a wager, they're requesting to maybe could you just venmo
me the money that you cost me? And now he
threw foreign interceptions in this l to a not very
good cal team, I think so it was rather surprising
to have them go down the way they did, especially
(01:56:07):
since he opened the game with a touchdown pass and
then proceeded to throw four interceptions.
Speaker 2 (01:56:12):
But that is the age we're in.
Speaker 3 (01:56:14):
You can now reach people in a number of different
ways and try to, in this case, recoup your losses.
I'm sure he's got some some inil money and maybe
if he feels compelled, if you lost your parlay because
things didn't work out on your Cal Auburn bet, he
just didn't seem very inclined to hook him up.
Speaker 2 (01:56:30):
The internet the best and worst thing Al Gore never invented.
Speaker 3 (01:56:34):
By the way, I'm sure everybody knows this. California is
an Atlantic Coast Conference football team. Obviously everybody should know that.
I just wanted to repoint that out to everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:56:43):
Geography.
Speaker 3 (01:56:44):
It's hard and they're two and oh wait to go, bears,
you're so golden.
Speaker 2 (01:56:48):
What else you got for?
Speaker 11 (01:56:48):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:56:49):
Dem'd Stanford. They're far enough away from the Pacific Ocean account.
Speaker 11 (01:56:52):
All right.
Speaker 8 (01:56:52):
So four Michigan stars Denard Robinson and Braylan Edwards. So
obviously a lot of highlights of Brailan Edwards from that
first meeting between Texas and Michigan played all throughout the week.
They followed the class action lawsuit against the INC Double
A and the Big Ten Network seeking more than fifty
million dollars for being quote wrongfully and unlawfully denied the
(01:57:13):
opportunity to earn money off their name image likeness.
Speaker 2 (01:57:18):
So wait, what's there? What's the argument?
Speaker 8 (01:57:22):
The lawsuit says that the NC DOUBLEA and the Big
Ten have exploited their iconic moments and that it was
created during their time at Michigan, and that they should
be able to recoup some of the money that obviously
has gone into part of what they've used.
Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
For their advertisements.
Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
So it's a little bit of this, even though clearly
not a great apples to apples, Reggie Bush gets the
Heisman Trophy taken away. Reggie Bush had infractions that were
deemed serious enough that this took place while he was
at USC for money taken in the house, all those things,
and now many many many years after the fact, he's
(01:58:03):
now even part of the Heisman House commercials.
Speaker 2 (01:58:05):
He has his Heisman trophy back.
Speaker 3 (01:58:07):
He has rightfully earned it by the vote and is
now rightfully recognized as the possessor who earned it currently
na image and likeness. If you're the university and you
want to make money off of that jersey sales, all
those things, it's do the players that they have a
cut of it, and clearly all the other nil and
(01:58:29):
the collective and all that, that's their way of through
the university having it directly go to them. There is
this essentially a little bit of a retroactive ask on
their part. Is there a figure that's being discussed where
they're asking for fifty millions?
Speaker 2 (01:58:41):
Oh fifty okay, that's a lot. It's probably worth their time.
How do you put a number on something like that?
Speaker 3 (01:58:46):
Though, And they did have that settlement of two point
seven billion, I think that was set to already be
paid out to all these athletic departments. A couple months
back to how this was, how that litigation played out, brought.
Speaker 2 (01:59:00):
Up Reggie Bush. There's no way to properly encapsulate what
he lost with a with a dollar figure. It's it's
it's astronomical. You could try, but you could have had this.
You didn't, and in fact, we took your award away
from you on top of it because of dumb rules.
Speaker 3 (01:59:21):
Well, I mean rules that aren't in place anymore. Yeah,
I mean trophy.
Speaker 2 (01:59:25):
I mean rules that.
Speaker 3 (01:59:26):
Aren't in place anymore and are literally quite the opposite
in some cases. I think that's some of the argument. Really,
A lot of the stems from the fact Vince's trophy. Anyway,
we're dealing with the NCAA, and we've talked so many times,
they're so ill equipped to handle all this stuff, to
investigate this stuff, to dole out pun Every time they
do it, they do it wrong, and I get it
why they're understaffed. They really just don't know what they're
(01:59:48):
doing and they can't handle this large of an entity.
So a lot of that ends up stemming from that.
Everybody in charge so ill equipped these days. It's a
pretty big entity and there's kind of a lot of
dollars going around. Got those ticke to give away U
of H and Creed separately Coming up next.

seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
ninety Tuesday or our signature segment.
Speaker 2 (02:02:10):
Is say what?
Speaker 3 (02:02:12):
What player? Was the focus of today's Say what?
Speaker 8 (02:02:16):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (02:02:17):
He plays football? Is your hint? What player? If you
were listening, you don't need a hint.
Speaker 3 (02:02:21):
It was a little over an hour ago we discussed
this individual and things that he had said and things
that he did on the field. Who's the subject of this? Afternoons?
Speaker 4 (02:02:31):
Say what?
Speaker 3 (02:02:31):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety If
you want to get in on the discussion, you can
call that number as well. But that's how you can
get a hold of Dan and get a hold of
those tickets. Texans home opener Sunday night. A one note
to pass along regarding parking for those of you wanting
to make your way on over to NRG Stadium for
this evening night home opener against the Bears. This is
(02:02:54):
from the Texans, just to pass this along for those
that were unaware this time. At this game, parking passes
must be purchased prior to game day on Sunday. No
parking passes available for purchase on Sunday at Energy Stadium
they have their mobile parking passes, so you can use those.
Hopefully traffic flow is easy. I've used them myself. It
(02:03:15):
does help a great deal. Have that ready to go.
If you want any other information on parking for this
Sunday night to tilt Houston Texans stuck, come, we'll have
it all for you.
Speaker 2 (02:03:24):
Why don't you just you get there and tailgate all
day so you're not late.
Speaker 3 (02:03:27):
It probably you won't need to speed up the process
if you are there at the moment you can be,
but there's only so many hours of gate open activities
over at the respective lots for you to tailgate.
Speaker 2 (02:03:37):
You mentioned during the break something that really got me laughing,
because earlier in the show you were like, well, you
can't just assume that the Astros are going to sweep
the remaining games against the Anaheim Angels. I said, yeah, yeah,
I mean Anthony Rendones playing for them and everything gone.
Speaker 3 (02:03:55):
Not anymore headed to the ail and presuming that might
call it a sea and for him, whether the injury
dictates that or not, I think they're placed in the
standings and his love for the game of baseball might
dictate that.
Speaker 2 (02:04:08):
Which one of their contracts has been the worst just
in the last five years, because there's several options. M
I don't think I could answer anything, but rendon Ah
didn't they give Okay, I take that back.
Speaker 3 (02:04:21):
Who I'm not saying there aren't other bad ones, but
I think he's at the top of the list. They
gave Josh Hamilton money back in the day. That's honestly
the timing of when they said, oh my god, how
could you say no to Albert Poolhols right, And it's
how we look at a lot of these long term
deal You're you're buying five good years of this player
and accepting the back end of this ten year deal.
As Shroud is becoming that But that's not because of production.
(02:04:44):
It's because of injury. And I would never have that's
not a bad day, the.
Speaker 2 (02:04:48):
Same thing he produced when he was healthy and then
he wasn't healthy. But he already had a history. Yeah,
except for against the Astros in the World Series, he
was always there and always getting hits.
Speaker 3 (02:04:58):
A couple other baseball notes for you, as expected, and
I reached out to the Space Cowboys to see if
this would be the case. Now that the lineup is out,
I can confirm it. Yesterday the Astros promoted Bryce Matthews
to Triple A. He will make his Triple A debut tonight,
playing shortstop and batting behind Cooper Hommel in the lineup.
(02:05:20):
He'll bat six Astros in the lineup tonight for the
Space Cowboys. Those who have played for this team this season.
Their leadoff hitter, their number two hitter, their number three hitter,
their number four hitter, they're number five hitter. And the
batter batting behind Bryce Matthews that's Kessinger, Leone, Descenzo Cabbage,
Hummel and Say Salazar. Says ar Salazar still could make
his way back to the Astros during the season if
(02:05:41):
they so choose to carry a third catcher, and since
they've made it through the whole season almost without a
third catcher, I'd be surprised if they placed him on
a playoff roster, but teams do do that every now
and then, wanting to protect themselves. Although if a player
gets hurt, you can replace him, but then you have
to take on the ramifications of replacing the player and
(02:06:03):
that he's unavailable for an upcoming series. So it's something
teams don't necessarily want to do if it's a short
term injury the series is only going a shorter term.
You're later in the series, but he'd be back for
the next series. So sometimes teams will go that round.
It's interesting to see or will be interesting to see.
I guess I should say.
Speaker 2 (02:06:21):
How the Astros go about the placing, in other words,
the two other catchers on the roster, because we've talked
about this. We talked about this just last week. Do
you want vic Carrottini in the lineup already every game
more often than not Krotini and Diez, or do you
want him to be the reliable back coming off the
bench in a pinch hitting situation.
Speaker 3 (02:06:41):
I think because of the way the roster is probably
now going to be constructed with Tucker in the everyday lineup,
with Hayward or Gammel as a left handed pinch hitter
off the bench, with some combination of the other names
we know, whether it's McCormick or Myers or Dubon is
probably available. I think they're going to be in a
pos position where the players we see in the lineup
(02:07:03):
today are probably the players we're going to see in
the lineup at their positions. I didn't necessarily say that
Jiner's probably gonna catch more often than not in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (02:07:12):
I would assume we do a familiarity.
Speaker 3 (02:07:15):
We do have a personal catcher situation going on quite
clearly with Yusay Kakuchi. Victor Carrattini is his catcher. Yep,
he's the only player who's caught a pitch from him
so far for the Astros this year. But yeah, other
than that, I think you'll probably see it set up
in a way that makes it best for them, because
the other thing is your catcher can be pinch hit
for and then okay, well, if he's pinch hit for
(02:07:37):
by somebody other than a catcher and Diez in the lineup,
you've lost your DH. But if Diaz is your catcher,
while you don't lose the DH, if he gets pinch
hit for, you're never pinch hitting for him, so you're
really not making out one way or the other. I'll
save this for tomorrow, so you guys can think about
this for the next twenty one hours and change and
see what tonight's results look like. On this front, I'm
(02:08:01):
not a fan of what Joe Aspota is doing with
the lineup, and maybe it changes when Kyle Tucker is
fully engaged, healthy and ready. I'm all for getting the
best hitters the most at bats, but the lineup he's
basically trotting out there is the one they used at
the beginning of the season that.
Speaker 2 (02:08:17):
Was a total disaster.
Speaker 3 (02:08:18):
Offensively, Jordon Alvarez and Jiner Diez and Alex Bregman have
been thriving in the lineup that did not include Kyle Tucker.
I would prefer jord On Alvarez not batting second. I'm
okay with maybe figuring out the other guys spots. Just
that alone. We'll talk about a lot more tomorrow. We'll
see how things play out tonight. We'll see if Altouve
(02:08:40):
looks at a few pitches and doesn't force Jordan to
run back in from left field and immediately be in
the batter's box, which happens from time to time, but
nonetheless just something to keep an eye on. Again, No
Butler in the lineup for Oakland tonight. Much more on
the game. Come in your way with the Astros on
deck show right here, and you know there was a
bunch of stuff I still think is sitting there for
as we get to Waydnesday tomorrow. Wednesday means It's time
(02:09:02):
to start looking ahead. The Bears are the Texans opponent.
You'll be on the field practicing tomorrow for the Bears.
They will be doing the same. Start to look.
Speaker 2 (02:09:11):
At what did go well for the Bears, special teams
and defense, What did not go well for the Bears,
everything else, mainly their offense and how that plays into
the matchup this week. Appreciate everybody that was with us.
Hope you guys enjoy your tickets, and we'll do it
all again tomorrow, same time, same place, Sports Talk seven
ninety and Space City Home Network on deck is next
Speaker 4 (02:09:32):
