It's Sports Talk seven to ninety. Before you know, it'll

simulcast at the top of the hour as we are
taking you until six o'clock tonight, whereas you heard, Matt

for the first of three against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight.

It's not Paul Skiings Night yet. Really it should be
called Spencer Arigedty Night. That's tomorrow night, but he and
the Pirates are in town for three as this home
stand continues.

Astros off last night.

But plenty still to talk about as it pertains to them,
especially because we will have the Joe a spot of
replay coming up in the three o'clock hour as the
Astros manager shares thoughts on you know what, health, I
think that's probably one of the main things. Actually over
the course of the next several days, that'll be a
huge topic of conversation, not the least of which will

obviously be whether or not the Astros are continue and
you try and gain some ground in their own division.
But to do so, they're gonna need some of these
guys that are coming back, and Josh Hater is at
the forefront before you know it, Hunter Brown and so
on and so forth. But should be an interesting series
just given that, unlike the Milwaukee Brewers, that's not a.

Surprise that they are good.

I don't think it's definitely a surprise what Pittsburgh is
doing this year.

I mean, I know, Paul Skeens is like the best
pitcher in baseball, but like not this year now, I know.
But despite that, they're they're a competitive baseball team. I
think we'd be saying that about the Pittsburgh priority.

Well, eventually, some teams decide to try, and they decided
to do that this offseason, signed a few players that
they thought could help them a little bit. Nobody overly unbelievable,
but you know, make a major league roster, give their
manager the opportunity to fill out a legitimate roster every day,
legitimate lineup every day, And that's what they've done. They've
definitely gotten good enough pitching, although I don't run if
the Astros are going to see any of it other

than Paul Skeens, the other starters scheduled to throw against
the Astros have been bad or hurt. I think it's
the safest thing to say. Bubba Chandler throws tonight, and
he made a couple of nice appearances at the beginning
of the year, and most of what he's done in
the last seven eight starts pretty bad, and hopefully the
Astros can take care of that. Doesn't pitch deep into games,

and just not a lot of greatness coming from him
this year, so take advantage of it. The same thing
comes on Thursday when they close out the series with
Jones returning from the IL. Has not had a very
good season, as brief as it has been because of injury,
and the Astros again look back at the Brewers series
and consider how they played. Obviously they lost too out
of three, but played pretty good baseball throughout that time.

And we talked at length about what took place Friday
night and a game they certainly could have won. Kaiwai
Tang starting that game, and then the other pitcher started,
here's who starting, And then this series you got Spencer
Arigedy going tomorrow, you got Tang going in the finale,
you got Mike Burrows, who's clearly pitching a lot better today. Well,
the ace of the staff didn't pitch against the Brewers.
He's pitching in this series, and if Mike Burrows has

the advantage, I'm not sure. We'll hear from Joe Aspota
on that a little bit. One of the things that
was discussed, who has the advantage in games like this
when you are an immediate departure and you see them
a couple months later. He was with a lot of
the guys in the clubhouse. He's certainly with some of
the people on staff, and now he's pitching against them,
and obviously vice versa. I'm sure the Astros have a

pretty good handle on who's there and how they might
want to attack it. So we'll get a little bit
on that. And the other thing from Joe that obviously,
if you were unaware, he acknowledged it and confirmed it.
Josh Hater is available tonight. He will be active for
the Astros for the first time this season, for the
first time since August of last year, and he's hopeful.
Joe is that with the adrenaline of pitching in a game,

and of course is walk in music, maybe some of
what you couldn't really get pitching in the fourth or
fifth or sixth inning of a minor league game in
a random minor league city. Maybe that adds a little
bit to his arsenal, because he certainly wasn't throwing as
hard as I would expect him to health none of
the outings that he had on his rehab assignment were

at that level, and I don't know that he really
wants them to be.

We'll see, and if it's a one run game tonight,
sure sounded like Joe Spotta wouldn't have any issue whatsoever
of putting them on the mound and having them try
to close things out. Get this series started off in
a little bit better way than the last series and
again trying to make up ground the standings. Watch it
might seem early sixty one games into the season, but
it's really not every day that goes by. Yesterday was

one of those days. The Astros didn't play two teams
and their division did and they both won. And that
stuff matters. The fact that Seattle keeps doing that. They
have a chance to take care of the Athletics this
weekend and actually catch and move past them. Potentially they're
on a little bit of a skid. All that stuff matters,
So we'd love to get into more of that conversation,
and we certainly will continued activity over at the facility

where the Texans are honing their craft. Second opportunity for
the media to go over and watch them in OTAs. Again,
watching them at OTAs, I recognize the value in that.
Certainly happy to share what we did see and what
we can report. Obviously had a chance to talk to
a few of the players, also with two of the
extended players a Nico Collins off of his third deal

with the Texans, Will Anderson Junior off of his second
deal with the Texans, and Jayden Higgins in his second
year with the Texans. The three players who spoke with
after practice, along with Tamiko Ryan. So we'll share some
of that, some of the work that was done on
the field, again relative to its importance here on the
second of June. I don't have any football games for

quite some time. That don't even have any practice against
anybody else for quite some time, and they obviously are
not in pads, so they're kind of going so through
what a typical offseason will be. So I will never
come into the show after seeing practice and tried to
tell you something of enormous consequence that took place out
there on any given day. This touchdown, catch, this receiver,

beat this dB, this interception took place. He doesn't look
very good. It's just not reality. Reality is if somebody
got hurt out there. That's pretty much.

That's different because there something of consequence is taking place.
Quarterbacks from a position battle type situation. Yeah, I mean,
Davis Mills and Graham Mertz pretty much don't throw any
passes behind the first team offensive line with the first
team offensive players, So there's really not a real I'm

assuming Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy are getting in that
work even in the off season, So not there, but
I would assume there's somewhat of a legitimate competition taking place,
so in that there is, you put those players in
similar situations to give them that. Oh, the Texans have
done this with CJ before when he was a rookie, right,
he took first team reps one day and then the
next day Davis Mills would take first team reps.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
That leads me to this next question, which might sound
ridiculous on this surface, but given what he's coming off
of and what the expectations are, does CJ look even
in an OTA setting, does he look different similar?

Speaker 2 (07:13):
I'll answer your question or he looks the same, but
I would definitely not spend much time calling you, Oh,
here's how he looked today. He threw an interception two
days or three days ago when we're out there, he
threw another one today. He threw three touchdowns in the
red zone on three passes a couple of days ago.
They didn't have any of that work today. So I

have anything to give to you on that, but there's
nothing for us. There's no way with what they've given
us that. And again, they're in shorts and T shirts,
they're in costumes. As you say, well, it's a pajama party,
as Dan Campbell would say. So I'm not going to
tell you that CJ looks this or looks that, other
than maybe his physical appearance. If he's noticeably bigger, noticeably
stronger in just his upper body or anything like that.

And I actually think he does look a little bit bigger.
I'd be shocked if if he wasn't a little bit bigger.
I don't know if that's a new weight number, even
if they don't list it, but yeah, I could tell
you that they're not even the amount of work they're
doing in the what we're getting to see. That's it's
to me, and there's plenty of other people out there
that could tell you otherwise. There's people that cover practice too.

They can tell you what they want. They can believe
in what they see and they can stress it or
they can sensationalize it if they want. I believe that's
really the name of the game. If this show is
purely a social media vehicle, I would definitely need to
do that because that's how you play the game. But
I'm going to tell people, give people reality that they
look like they're preparing for the season. That's what Beyond that,

I can share maybe some combinations that they've used, but
I wouldn't want to get too specific about that because
one day to the next, we don't get to go
to every practice. When that's the value in training camp
going every day, you really do get they're really trying
to prepare for the season. Today, they're still trying to
prepare players for the season. You know, if this player
is going to get work at guard, well they might
as well start getting him work at guard now. Well

if he's also going to get work at center, well
they need to do both. And by the time they
get to camp, they'll know exactly what they want. I'll
get to see progressions each day. Who's doing what. There's
so so much less to quote unquote hide from us
during camp because we're there for all of every practice.
If they did it, we saw it. They're having OTAs
last week and this week. We've attended two of their
four on field sessions, so they could do who knows

what when we're not out there. So I'm not going
to tell you everything because I don't know everything. No,
I get it.

And again, it's pajama party costumes, whatever you want to
call it.

It's just not the same as training camp.

I know everybody wants to believe they got a big
jump forward, but an interception by Petrie the other day,
another interception which today would have been a pick six,
and Sting jumped a route. I mean, I would probably

be looking at to see what other veteran quarterbacks are
out there if I were the Texan. You think that's
what people want to hear. You say they want to
hear sensational nonsense. I could give them that because everything
I said is true about what happened. I well, do
you know what, though, who did you say got that
pick today? The best corner in the NFL. I'll save
you the I mean, I'm gonna I'll have to double

check the notebook. But and again, we're unfortunately in a
position situated behind all of the players on offense that
aren't in the game or in the drill. Seeing everything
is a little bit difficult. But that's what I think
he is.

There's one person in this business that I work with
or have worked with that actually is more of an
elitist snob about their location at any given sporting event, practice,
or otherwise, more so than Matt Thomas.

That's what that organization always does. They're not going to
keep him, and they're certainly not going to win big
with him, because the Pirates never do that. So why
would they keep this latest future he's not even a
future superstar. He's a superstar right now because they can

because he sells tickets, no, because they can afford too,
and they might actually have a good team, and that's
one of the things they really haven't had see even
the way you say that it sounds like it happened
on accident.

No, they find I mean some of their prospects actually
might be really really good this go around. Certainly Connor
Griffin is one of them, although he is unavailable for
this series because he's hurt. There's a couple others that
might end up at that level. I think they were
hoping that O'Neil Cruz would be that. Definitely not at
that level. There's still a possibility he could become more

of that. But when you start to compete, when you
put yourself with your team in position to do that,
when you have a young pitcher, it's great that he's
a star immediately because he doesn't make any money and
you can I don't think you're gonna be able to
get him to agree to any kind of team friendly
deal for the long term, but you're certainly not gonna
have to pay him anything crazy for the long term
until you get to the to that point in time,

(13:57):
So take advantage of it. I know what they have been,
and I know that's been the long time complaint of
the Pirates. I don't really view them quite like a
few other teams. I mean, where where are all these
great pirates playing around the majors right now? Great former
pirates that have gone.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
Coles one that I always think about, just because he
was before he was an astro.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
He was a pirate, but he wasn't this guy. No,
that's totally fair. It also probably is worth noting Garrett
Cole pitched his last game for the Pirates.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
When twenty eighteen, twenty seventeen. Okay, it's twenty twenty six, maya,
it's almost been a decade.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
So again, that's that's the definitive answer to the question.
These great pirates, he's one of them. He was a
really good pitcher. Schemes has been significantly better than him.
And right, what's that he's been there longer? Right? How
long was Cole a Pirate? Five full seasons? See, that's
what always four in three quarter seasons.

Yeah, That's what always gets me is I always forget
that he was there as long as he was in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
I mean, because he was drafted as a college player,
he didn't need to spen a whole lot of time seasoning.

It just feels like he was in Houston longer than
he was when really that was the shortest stop of
his entire professional tenure.

Now, well, yeah, he signed a nine year deal with
the Yankees.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
I ow, Well, yeah, I'm saying I knew he would
be a Yankee for the remainder of his career. But
just in light of the years he was an Astro,
it felt like he was here longer than he actually
was when it was really two seasons.

The Pirates have hit a lot better than they did
last year, and that's probably the number one reason why
they are where they are because again, Skens is not
having an unbelievable nobody can touch him season, and six
or seven other pitchers in the NL are and he's
not among them. This year, he's had some good starts,
but he's also had some starts that well, they're obviously
not very much like him. He had a start where

he didn't even get three outs. His defense failed him,
but it ran up his pitch count and they had
to take him out in the first inning. That had
not happen before. We remember when he burst onto the
scene and everyone was basically on no hit or watch
every time he went out there. So it has been
because of other guys and they were among the league's
lowest scoring teams a year ago. Now they're among the

league's highest scoring teams. The Braves, the Nationals, the Pirates,
and the Dodgers. Those are the four National League teams
that have scored three hundred or more runs so far
this season. That's it, just those four teams. And when
you add all the American League teams that done that,
you had one more. There's five teams in baseball scoring
five or more runs per game. The team the Astros

are playing tonight is one of them.

So if the Brewers found a way to gut out
I don't even say they cut it out two or three.

They clawed their way back to win one of.

against as good a pitching that the Astros are providing
as as the Brewers did.

I mean, uh yeah, I mean I think that's probably fair.
It kind of depends on Burrows. I mean, I feel
pretty good about the starters tomorrow. Last several turns through
the rotations Tomorrow and Thursdays, both of the two of
them have been good win Tang and Tang pitched the
opener the Friday game that they lost, but they were
in position to win when he left the game. They've
been in position to win when he's left most of
his starts, and they've obviously won all but one of

Spencer Arraghetty's starts. So yeah, I feel great about those two.
Now today is more of a tatsu Emi type of start.
Is it the pitcher that you can win behind? And
recently that's been yes for him? And Mike Burrows throws today.
Is he a pitcher you can win behind? Kind of
depends does he go out there and you know, shut
down the first six batters and then the third inning,

he watched the nine hole hitter after you know, play
doesn't get made behind him, and then he serves up
a three run Homer and the Pirates have one hit
through the first nine to ten batters, but they're leading
three to nothing because he let one go over the fence. Again,
He's had his problems with getting too many runners on base,
and he's obviously also had problems with keeping the ball
in the yard. He had been the league leader in

both hits allowed and homer's allowed. A few other pitchers
have helped him kind of stabilize him not being a
top that two lists that you absolutely don't want to be.
But heading into play today, the thirteen home runs he's allowed,
no American league pitcher has allowed more. He's uh, he is.

Well, put it this way, I hate that Spencer Arraghetty
is pitching the same night as Schemes. Does that make sense?
Like it's a great matchup and all that, But I
don't know, And maybe it will be a pitcher's duel, right,

Well, keep in mind, Paul Skeins, what do you think
their record is when he pitches?

Well, I do remember famously last year it wasn't very good.
He was pitching it very good. This year either he
was pitching his balls off and they couldn't find it.

Sat this year there are four games over five hundred.
He's arguably their best pitcher. Right, so stands to reason
a bunch of those games over five hundred probably are
when he pitches, right. Is it just wrong? They're none
over five hundred games over five hundred support Well, he
also has allowed the other teams to score. The last

three times he's started. The opponents are averaging six runs
a game, and twelve of those eighteen runs have come
against him.

So he sucks now, is what you're saying. I'm just
saying most of his season does surprise me.

Again. The first game of the year was the one
I brought up last segment or earlier this segment. He
didn't get out of the first inning. You have a
five runs. There was two very bad plays in the
center field from crews that led to part of it.
But a thirty seven pitch first inning in his opening
start of the season after pitching at the World Baseball Classic, Well,
they said that's enough for today. We're gonna go ahead
and take you out. And then he was really really

good for his next eight starts, and his last three
have been bad. They've lost them all.

That's crazy, and it also means that he's due, which
I hate.

Why Why is it a run of bad starts? Why
does it have to end today?

You know what I hated was was tomorrow Jordon's series
against the Brewers. Even though I I understand, especially in
the case of Sunday, I understand why. I mean, you

It sounds cliche, but that's exactly what you have to do.
But I would hope that he could bounce back in
a series like this and maybe maybe we'll see an

that means from June second until the end of the season,

one hundred plus games, or right out one hundred and
one games, He's only going to homer thirty one more times.

It's got twenty, right, now, yeah, like that's a lot.
But that means if he has a couple of multi
homer games, then you're probably at about seventy some odd games.
He's not gonna hit any home runs. Like he's gonna
hit three hundred means he's gonna get out seven out
of ten times.

Oh, I know, I just mentioned a home run. He's
a great hitter. It's not like I'm thinking he's just
one of these You wanted him to bounce back. Yeah,
he could if he has a doubles back from his weekend.
I mean, it's such a like it's in baseball. I
can't I can't get on a weekend series. But I'm
watching on Sunday and I'm like, Wow, there's not a

lot of pitchers that can make Jordon Alvarez look pedestrian

And I felt like that's what he looked like at

It's rare they faced somebody who's awesome and he was

It's I think American Airlines Center is right around the

thousand and three. So, but there's no I mean, that's
why you're seeing the construction out front right now. That's
why you've seen all sorts of facelifts inside the building.
The Rockets are being smart about it. It's not Tilman
being cheap or some other dumb stuff I've seen.

If that's how cities and counties and whoever is involved
in referendums and votes and taking money and using it,
I guess you can always try and ask and make
it work and do it if they want to. If
the city wants to go ahead and do it and
the fights are made and you win, I guess, go
for it. But it's probably not necessary. But what's funny
about this. Look, how much more money more revenue streams? Yeah,

Well, what's funny about this, though, is that you have
a team potentially move, potentially moving to a brand new
site completely out of downtown and it's going to be
a total different everything to go watch Mavericks basketball, and
all anybody still cares about is that they traded Luco.

Away for a Ham Sandwich. Essentially, well, they were, they
were an unfun team to watch. They just prior to that,
were in the NBA Finals. I'd be ticked off eighteen
months later. I would not be over it, even with
Cooper Flagg on the team, even with somebody else joining
the team this offseason in the draft, I'd be ticked
off because the player who you didn't want anyway in

the trade isn't here either and was useless while he
was here. Awful. They should absolutely still care about this,
even if the people in charge, Jason and Nico, aren't
there anymore.

Yes, But what I hate about this is that it's
another reminder that even though they did do something that
stupid and the Spurs didn't, both of.

These teams have had the number one pick in.

The draft in the last three seasons, and the Rockets
have never had it since.

Right the third time they had it, That's true, but
at least those were coin flips, a huge lottery surprise.
By the way, they booked up a bunch of spots
to get Yeah.

Well yes, they only have like an eight percent chance,
but did not. Would they not have gotten the combination
had they not? Yeah, Spurs and Rocket games.

Spurs and Rockets ended up finishing with the same record
in a game late in the season, could have clearly
impacted that. So in order to determine which handful of
lottery combinations went to which team they had a coin
flip the Rockets quote unquote one. So they got this
group of coin of a lottery combinations. The Spurs got
this group of lottery combinations. The group that the Spurs

got was one of the combination that was drawn first,
which is what lands you the first pick in the draft.
And in that year it was victory.

I mean essentially, since Hakeem Elijuan put David Robinson in
a body bag, it's been all Spurs fortunes up since then.

Four wins away from adding another.

Because even when the Rockets went and got Yao Ming
and added Tracy McGrady to him. Of course, neither one
of them ever stayed healthy, while Tim Duncan just methodically
played every game every season, won a bunch of championships. Great,
and then the Spurs ran their organization so horribly that
they got said combination and they get Victor wibin Yama.

But hey, at least the Rockets got reached out. I mean,
I respect, you know what they did under the coach,
but the last years of their previous coach still with
the organization were terrible, and at land them in the
in the upper portion of the lottery. Finally, they were
in the purgatory of the lottery for years, not a
championship contender, not drafting inside the top eight or nine
pretty much every year. They never landed any players of worth.

And then they got, you know, a couple guys like
Johnson and Vessel who were pieces. And then they got
three straight years at the top of the draft and
top four and hit on all three of those selections.

I just hate the two of the players picked right
after the Rockets picks. You just think, okay, if the
Rockets had taken that player instead, like Castle and Evan Mobley,
Evan Mobley's gotten a Defensive Player of the Year award already.
If you took him instead of Jalen Green, where would
you be today? Would you even have Kevin Durant?

Miles Garrett, the Browns trade of Miles Garrett is the
latest collateral damage from the Deshaun Watson debacle. Before I
go any further, I don't even think that's an unfair
statement when you guarantee a guy in today's NFL climate,
with contracts the way they are.

We just got done talking about this yesterday.

Speaker 1 (34:28):
How Nick Cassario and some of these other people, and
Chris Simms, by the way, went on the record as
saying that if Howie Roseman is the best GM or
personnel guy in the league as far as cap management.
Then he thinks Nick Cassario has got to be second
because of the way he manipulates things.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
But if you guarantee a guy two hundred and thirty
million dollars, you can't manipulate anything. You can try, and
they have.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
But I don't think that's an unfair statement to say
Miles Garrett getting traded out of Cleveland is at least
in part due to the stupid decision to give to
Sean all that money. And oh, by the way, it's
not really a return on the investment. Yeah, I don't
really agree with it at all.

I definitely understand the math behind it, and that's not
really something to disagree with. But what's what are we
not like about this? This is collateral damage? This is
a great deal. This is a great trade. Phenomenal trade,
awesome trade. Are you in the trade? Are you better? Yes,
the Cleveland Browns are better, You're in a better situation,

But are you a better team? It's marginal.

Speaker 1 (35:29):
You can get picks, look at the Rockets. You can
get high draft picks. Doesn't mean you're better.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
You're not trying to get better, like you're just trying
what you're What you're asking me is are the twenty
twenty six Cleveland Browns more equipped to win football games
in twenty twenty six? Not what? That's not the question
you should be asking, and it's certainly not the one
they should be trying to answer. Are we in a
better position to actually win big at some point in
our future? And that answer is yes.

Well, he writes the following, He says, you know, nobody
wants to trade a Miles Garrett. No general manager wakes
up excited to willingly move on from one of the
greatest players in the franchise's history and easily the best
since the team returned to the NFL in nineteen ninety nine. Which,
by the way, that's true. I think Miles Garrett is
their best. But he said I wrote last year when
the Browns signed him to that massive extension, they should

have traded him, and said instead, because it's the fastest
way out of the mess they created for themselves. Then
why is he saying it's collateral now it's collateral damage.
He advocated for this, and now they've done it, and
he's saying, well, look what happens when you signed to Sean.
We'll have to table this for a little bit later.

a long time, so I'm not picking on him. But
this is a good deal. This is smart, all right.

what he did this year. This year, Jalen Williams was
either hurt or unsuccessful, so he wasn't a very important

but I'm not gonna tell you he's their second or
third best player when he just flat out wasn't.

And then their other good player wasn't successful either. So
now the Spurs are in the finals, right, But Burrows
hasn't had a good year. He pitches tonight, He's had
a better year than Bubba Chandler, that's the opposing starting

Daniel Hunter, TJ. Watt, and Max Crosby. I think there's
some other good players. Clearly, you know, Trey Hendrickson obviously
would be in a conversation, but I don't really think
anybody views him as better than them. Maybe a better
option for you if you're the Ravens, but not a
better player. So yeah, I think there's a real good
argument to be made the Will Anderson Junior is the

best edge rusher in the conference now, and he's definitely
the only edge rusher other than Daniel Hunter who can say, yeah,
but look who's playing opposite me, Look how awesome we
it can be as a Tanner. There's some other good
tandos also, the only guy that can say besides TJ. Watt,
they can say, well, at least my team didn't try
to trade me and in one case did trade me
this offseason. Max Crosby and Miles Garrett can't say that. Well,

Miles Garrett is probably not going to phrase it like
at least my team didn't trade me. He'd be more
likely they say, well, I'm in LA now playing for
an awesome Super Bowl favorite, not the Chargers, not in
Cleveland where we had no chance. Five sack games NFL

record number of sacks. So what disappointment when I walk
off the field ten to eleven times guaranteed.

Rams Texans in the Super Bowl? Is going to feed generations?

Well, that type of question was presented to Will Anderson
Junior today as in is it fair for this team
to have Super Bowl expectations? It's kind of an obvious answer.
I would hope everybody realizes they didn't just get to
the playoffs. They aren't hoping things go well. This is
a perennial playoff team. They're the only team in the
AFC that's been to the Final four three straight years.

They finally won a game on the road. They've did
the tiniest little inkling of progress you might be able
to tie to that. I mean, they have only had
two other seasons in franchise history with twelve or more wins.
They had number three. Last year had a second nine
game winning streak to tie their all time mark. So
there are a lot of reasons to think think highly
about this team. But even without ever appearing in a

(44:55):
conference championship game, look at the roster, Look at the players. Now,
talk to them, players, How could you not think it's fair?
Just the lowest of bars? Is it fair to have
super Bowl expectations? So I've given away his answer, which
was obvious, but you're going to hear him say it
most definitely, Most definitely.

I thinks like the additions that they win and got,
you know, in the off season have been great. I
think what we want as a team is right in
front of us. I told the guys today when we
broke it down, I said, man, it's a companist thing.
I said, look, everybody in the circle will believe that
this is a super Bowl team. Everybody raised their hand,
and I said, well, the front office, the coaches, they
made the decision to bring you here because they thought
they thought that you could help us win that Super Bowl.

So you're a super Bowl caliber player. And so for me,
like I look at this team, man, and we got
Super Bowl Calboy players all over the field, and it's
just about taking that next step.

Speaker 2 (45:44):
Pretty simple. They've he and others have probably said that
those that have been here all three years of his career,
it's time to take the next step. You think Miles there,
they've said it two times before.

Speaker 1 (45:55):
You think Miles the third Turner asked anybody to raise
their hand in a huddle in Cleveland to see if
they thought they were super I don't.

Speaker 2 (46:01):
It sucks. I mean, when you're a really good player
and there's some other good players there and you know
you have no chance, it stinks. It wears on you,
no matter how much money you're making. Because football is different.
You are putting a lot on the line. You're putting
way more into it physically. I mean, the Rockets do
have a weight room and they do use it, but

not like an NFL football team. No, it's just not
the same. And then obviously their practices. I mean, we
would have preferred if Kevin Durant ran into nobody during
their practice between the end of the regular season and
the start of the postseason because he got hurt. They
run into each other on purpose a lot at NFL

practices and the textans so far, so good from a
practice standpoint, haven't lost anybody of significance. Asked to give
an update on EJ Speed today since Aaron Wilson reported
that the quad injury was they had surgery on it
and the determination was with the tear that he has
probably lost for the regular season. Demiko Ryans acknowledged that

he had a surgical procedure. He did not acknowledge that
he was out for the season, but that does appear
to be the case. So beyond that, in the two
week sish that they've been on the field for OTAs,
there are several teams that have had multiple end of
season injuries, and I'm sure it will happen to somebody
in this on this team. It happens to almost all
thirty two teams, So hopefully it won't. And whom that

happens to, we don't know, but what it will was
getting at is it's kind of obvious players that we
have here. Management must think your super Bowl caliber. We
think we are super Bowl caliber, and I don't. I
don't think that's any way. There's no way they could
go into the season and not think that and you
could also come out of that, especially in the other cities,
and say, what are they thinking? Who do they think

they are? All of a sudden, this team that's done
next to nothing in the playoffs, has not won on
the road in the divisional round ever, and now all
of a sudden, they're not only gonna win on the
division in the divisional round on the road, they're gonna
win again the next week, likely on the road, and
they're gonna end up in the super Bowl after we
watched them last year both games in the playoffs. Offensively, yes,

that's fine, there's plenty to push back on, but the
players on the team aren't going to do that. Players
on the teams that absolutely believe this should this team
should be playing for the Lombardi Trophy. Absolutely. There's probably
five teams in the AFC at least that should say that,
and they're one of them.

Well, I hope that it actually happens, as opposed to
just talking about it, because I'll be The city of
Houston sports landscape needs it right now, very very badly,

Shortly after I got home last night, learned that former
Rocket head coach Rick Adelman had passed away at the
age of seventy nine.

One of the great coaches over several different eras of
NBA basketball. His son, of course, is Denver Nuggets head
coach David Adelman. Thousand forty two games as an NBA coach.
That's the tenth most in league history. Only four other coaches,
that would be Pat Riley, Greg Popovich, Jerry Sloan and

George Carl coached more games and had a better winning
percentage than Adelman. That's insane. When you consider that he
had stops in Portland and he took them to the
finals twice obviously, Sacramento here in Houston, Minnesota, and Golden State.
I don't know why, but for the life of me,

I can't remember when he coached the Timberwolves.

Was his last stop when he ultimately stepped away from
coaching for family reasons and never returned. I don't remember

them better, But they weren't a good team when he

I mean, he even coached Golden State during a time
where just a bunch of players went through gold or

just wasn't going anywhere because they couldn't get the roster.

But he just he might not have been the most gregarious,
He might not have been the most fun loving, if
you will to deal with when it comes to the media.
But the guy was just a good ex's and o's coach.

Yeah, I think I said during the time when I
was covering the team with him there, and I was
part of the broadcast team so went on some road
trips with them as well, so around him just a
bit more than maybe currently. He just he wasn't mean
about it. He didn't have an attitude about it, but
he was uninterested in, you know, sharing with the media.

(51:31):
You asked him questions, he gave you very thoughtful answers.
He wasn't gonna give you more than that. He wasn't
gonna go long into detail. You weren't gonna spend time
with him as much as maybe other coaches off the
record or in other conversations. I'm here for my media
availability and I'll give you what you need and then
I'll go back about my day of trying to make
this basketball team better. And like you said, that's what
he always did with all of his teams. He was

(51:52):
he had teams, and I think there's some similarities to
Mike dan Toni in that if you really look at
what some of his teams had the talent. Again, other
than Minnesota. He had some really talented basketball teams. Okay, Well,
so how come he didn't win a title? Well, we
can run through the reasons why, and we know about
all them because it's a little bit more recent with d'antni,
But in Adalman's case, did he run into some all

(52:16):
time great opponents over and over again? He might have
had the second best team in the NBA on more
than one occasion. We definitely think the Rockets had at
least the second best team in the NBA with D'Antoni
and Harden and Chris Paul, and so it happened to
them too. I think that did happen in his case,
and it wasn't here in Houston. It was definitely in Sacramento.

(52:36):
And you go and look at what his actual roster
was and who they were up against and how some
of those series went. The Portland series that was very controversial.
He could have easily, with a break or two, been
a multiple time championship head coach and not even mentioning,
you know, I guess the title are the finals appearances

(52:57):
that you did bring up. I don't know how you
could look at it any other way. They lost to Jordan, Well.

Speaker 1 (53:03):
They lost to the end of the Pistons era and
they lost to the beginning of the Jordan era. I'm
not gonna sit here and say, well, he just wasn't
good enough as a head coach.

Speaker 2 (53:13):
Yeah, rightful place in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Really
really excellent work here in Houston. Two playoff teams, one
playoff series victory, a couple of fifty one seasons. He
did fall right in line with their Okay, four years
for you, four years for you, and we're talking about
Mike D'Antoni, Jeff Van Gundy, Rick Ademley. There's just some really,
really good coaches who had their four years here in Houston,

(53:35):
and then this is just time to move on. A
really nice person, obviously a basketball family, and I think
you could clearly see it from the franchises and other
individuals yesterday and even today that have had things to
say about him and time they spent with him or
dealings they had with him, that was pretty widely and
commonly helped thought about Rick Adelman just as a person,

let alone a very good strategist when it came to
coaching basketball. Rip.

Rick Adelman, first head coach I ever hired. Hall of
Famer brilliant basketball mind and a great family man. I'll
never forget the twenty two game winning streak or him
pushing the eventual champion two thousand and nine Lakers to
Game seven, thinking of his family today. That's from former
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, who tweeted that last night

I didn't realize that that was the first coach he hired.

He came in as an assistant GM with Carol Dawson
during the Van Gundy era, and yeah, I remember, in fact,
I want to say I was out at the Greek
Festival with you and Matt Jackson when Jeff Van Gundy
made the decision that, yeah, I'm just I'm not going
to come back to coach the Rockets. They didn't fire him,

they just didn't renew his contract and he didn't sign
a contract, and depending on who you talk to, so
then it was you've got this uber talented team with
Yoo and Tracy, they've dealt with some in injuries, but
we got to go get a guy who's somehow going
to be able to fill in the footsteps of Jeff
Van Gundy. And he just happened to be available because

of I guess the Sacramento phase had just ended for him.

Yeah, that was a mistake that people still point to
that they believe the Sacramento King's made. They haven't had
a team or a coach like that since.

Late this season, with the Rockets push towards the finish,
Emi Udoka pushed past Rick Adelman barely by percentage points,
now as the third winningest coach in Rockets history based
on winning percentage. D'Antoni won, Mikhale two, Udoka three, Adamman four,
and the namesake of the uh fake but awesome Rudy

T's Diner is number five. That's crazy that Rudy's five
on that list. Yeah, nobody else in franchise history has
more than two hundred and seventeen wins. That's Mike d'An toni.
Except for Rudy, He's over five hundred.

That's what's crazy is that D'Antoni got to halfway in
just basically four seasons.

Yeah, d'An toni, McHale, give or take Rick Adelman, and
Jeff and Gunny. I mean they all roughly coached the
same number of games.

But when you win sixty five games in one four seasons,
four seasons. Yeah, but yeah, it was like you said
it was. I mean, I know, we talk about twenty
eighteen all the time. I don't know what would have happened.
Two thousand and nine was a different time, Like the
Eastern Conference was at least more formidable at that time.
The Boston Celtics were in their Big Three era, and

that was a really great defensive team. In fact, they
were the ones the Rockets lost or completed the twenty
second win of that streak against the Lakers, and then
they had the streak broken the very next game by
the Celtics, and those two teams wound up meeting for
the NBA Championship that year.

As I recall, Yeah, the first season he was there
was the best regular season they had and went to
the playoffs and had a home court advantage even as
the five seed against the Utah Jazz lost a six

perspective and totally guessing on this, but I think it's
pretty educated guess. Playing for Rick Adelman, how was that
in your career? Awesome, some great phenomenal, the best year.
I mean, Kyle Lowry gushed about him in an article

You think about that, Kyle Lowry was like, not a
throw in trade, but what was it? The Rafer Austen
deal that sent him rayferh went to Orlando, Kyle came
over from Memphis.

Speaker 2 (58:31):
I want to say I don't remember the parameters.

Speaker 1 (58:32):
It was a three team deal with the Rockets, as
I recall, and Kyle Lowry was one of those guys
that was like, you knew he was good, he was solid,
but he became like a really good point guard under
Rick Adelman. And that's just there's a bazillion different players
that you could say that about that. Rick Adelman was
probably the biggest reason why that happened.

One of the writers out in the Portland area with

how the rehab went and what still might lie ahead
of Josh Hater and the fact that he hasn't faced
major league hitters yet. He's been pitching in minor league
ballparks with the non ninth inning role that he held there. Hey,

Josh Hater's going to pitch today. Well, they know he's
going to pitch in his minor league rehab games because
he's going to pitch in a non save situation in
the fourth inning or the third inning, or the fifth inning,
or wherever it might be, rather than wait and see
if he's needed. Tonight, Among the things that Joe gets
to do here about how something from an und adrenaline
standpoint could help with Josh Hater. Even as early as tonight.

He keeps mentioning that, you know, he meets that explor
adrenaline just to finish the whole rehab.

You know, he feels good on the mound, the pitches,

physically and mentally, he feels great. So we are we
are excited to welcome him back today.

a team or coaching, been around a clubhouse all your life.

What is it like?

What is the psychology by getting a guy out there,
giving him his first chance to swing a batter, in
this case, throw a pitch, and knowing that it's okay
to go full throttle, that what you were expected to
do is something you did before the injury.

Yeah, you know, well that that goes with the individual.
You know. The mindset of the individual also plays a
big role into what you just asked. You know, Josh
Hader is one of the best ninth innings pitchers in
the league, so he already has the mindset. He already
knows I can let it eat and I need that
extra boost by the fans, buy a teammates. I've won

(01:02:41):
nothing lead to protect that lead. So he's already coming
in already prepping for that. Some other players are a
bit more hesitant when he comes to you know, when
to push it, how to spin the ball. Josh, He's
been He's been trained for that, so I'm not concerned

(01:03:01):
about that. You know. It's just keeping in closed eye
on him. Number of pitches back to back days. So
we have to constantly be in communication with Josh to
make sure that we build him. We held it, We'll
build him up properly.

Speaker 5 (01:03:18):
You have asked your bullpen to assume a variety of
different roles because of Josh as the situation, and obviously
hose Brian's this year has not been to what he's
wanted to do.

Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
But is there any.

Speaker 5 (01:03:29):
Sense of relief or maybe just an extra arm can
indirectly build confidence with the rest of you guys that
have had to inherit a lot of high leverage intings
for you this year.

Speaker 3 (01:03:39):
Yeah, and just not any arm. Right, we were talking
about one of the best arms in the game. So
by him being joining us, there is a sense of
relief from the rest of the guys that, Okay, now
we have an extra arm that we could count on
another high lever spot. He will put another. It puts

the other the rest of the guys in their spots
where when we started the season, that's what we envision
right going on in spring training, this is how we
envision are bopen to be to be And now you know,
with one hundred games left, we can we feel like
it's coming. It's coming together and it's a sense of

relief from for everyone in the bullpen. Now it's just
we just got to be you know, curful and make
sure that Josh, you know, it's able to you know,
build up and feel strong to give us, you know,
the push that that these team needs.

How often does Rdain, by the way, bother you about
left field? I'm presuming it's quite a bit.

Would that be fair to say, you know what, No,

Actually I think that Jordan, you know, he likes playing less,
but also he you know, we all recognize that by
him the agents, we've been a able to keep them
you know, fairly healthy throughout the season, you know there,
and that's important, you know, I am, I'm you know,
I am going to ask him here in the next

few days to play some left and he's always open
to that. He he loves going out there. But right now,
keeping our guys healthy and keeping you know, a good
offense on the field to try to make up for
the ground that we need to make up. I think
he's he's being okay with it. But again, he you know,
he loves playing left and you know, eventually, once we

get all to it back, you know he'll he'll he'll
play some left field. So I we'll take some of
those sketches the way we have planned before.

Hosey went down two last questions, both pitching. One on
Burrows going against his old team today.

Do you think there is any advantage to Mike Burrows
being a Pittsburgh pirate knowing what they know about him
and maybe altering what he would do in terms of
pitch selection, or am I just throwing stuff against the
wall seat and something sticks?

Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
No? No, no, I see the other way around. I
think he he he knows, he knows his ex teammates
very well. He knows, you know, where to go with
some of these hitters. So, yes, they do know Mike.
But a lot of those guys have never faced Mike, right.
They they maybe in live vps when he was in Pittsburgh,
so you know, maybe a seam game. But Mike has

(01:06:22):
studied those players. He's seen hundreds of our bats of
those guys, so he knows what those guys tendencies are.
And again, Mike has been throwing the ball better, and
I expect him to be to be good today.

Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Last three starts for Mike burrows a four to fifteen ERA,
which is slightly better than his season the r But
more importantly than that, it has been, as Joe said,
a little bit better on the bass pass. Only allowed
eleven hits in those thirteen innings, only walked four batters
in those thirteen innings, So a one one five whip
a big, big advancement forward from what he'd been done
he had been doing the rest of the season in

(01:06:58):
a batting average against the two twenty I mentioned in
the opening hour, he's been near the top of the
league and hits allowed all year. He's not right at
the top of the league now. And he's been near
the top of the league in home runs allowed. He
is still tied for the league lead, a bad place
to be in the most home runs allowed if they
turn into solo homers moving forward, because I still think

(01:07:19):
he's gonna give them up. And he's been probably as
disgusted as anybody at home with Dyke and park level
home runs being hit off of him as any pitcher
they have this year, and it does seem like it
happens to the newbies more than anybody, and he is
that all right? I want to react to some of
the other things that Joe Spota had to stay there,

specifically on Jordan and playing left field.

It's actually a surprising answer, I thought, Plus Josh Hater's
return and will it even matter for the team? I

if we should play him left field at all. I
don't think he should feel he should be a DH.

So I think so many people want to make him
into what Big Poppy was in Boston that they neglect
that he's not a bad fielder and he has an
above average arm.

Yeah. I don't know if Ortiz would be categorized as
we want to keep him off of his feet because
he's hard to keep healthy. I think they wanted to
keep him off of his feet. I eat in the
dugout as a DH because he was a butcher and
had only one possible position, And your dn's the same.
He can't play anywhere else but left field. Ortez was
a first baseman only. Yeah, what you said about his

(01:11:36):
defense is what separates the two. I don't think, and
I don't honestly at first base, if you can scoop,
it's probably not the end of the world. If you
don't make all the other plays, you can get a
couple of extra outs, and a guy who really turns
a double play, well, you get a couple of extra
outs or take away a couple of extra base hits.
With a guy who is really good at, you know,
diving for balls and has a little bit more range,

(01:11:58):
it's still first base, and so your rain factor as
a first baseman is obviously already limited to begin with.
You probably can't range very far from the bag or
else they're probably going to be safe at first a
lot of times. So anyway, I think it's a little
bit different. And yeah, if anybody's noticed, Jordan might not
look as smooth, I mean right now, getting to baseball's
path to baseballs things like that. With who they have,

(01:12:21):
Zach Cole's here, Bryce Matthews is here, Jake Myers is
here soon, Joey Loperfiedo will be here, camp Smith is yere.
They're all outstanding. He's their worst outfielder they have, even
though he's not awful. They just happen to have really
good outfielders. And then other than Jake, they probably probably
all have better arms than he does, except for Jake.

Jordon definitely has a better arm than he does. And
it's not saying Jordon doesn't have a good arm. They
just have a lot of other guys who have really
good arms, like Camp's arm is great, Zach Cole's arm
is plus. So this is vertical leap. Yeah, it's been
pretty simple. Fifteen times this year, they're twenty seven and
thirty four. It's game sixty two. Jordon's going to play

(01:13:02):
in his sixty first game. He's only been in left
field fifteen times. I like that. I don't think he's
gonna double that the rest of the year. Good exactly
keep him up right, and by the way, this is
the reason he's been healthy. It doesn't matter. He is
healthy and this is what we've been doing, so we're
going to keep doing that right now. It's as simple

taken Ty Simpson. Over the last eleven drafts, I believe
they've been in the playoffs seven times and they've won

a super Bowl and I believe lost another one. Yes,
And just looking at Verse, they just drafted him and

tweak and he's missed the last three plays or otherwise.

do work in their edges at least as much as
other teams do. It seems pretty common for teams to
do that with some players. You know Max Cross, he

You'd say it. You would think it would sound that way,
but it's not. It seems like I've seen it. Thus
it's great. A lot of good set dressing. Have you
