Astros & Yordan Do It Again, Rockets Add Pieces, Jaylen Brown Traded, Javier to Bullpen

Wednesday on The A-Team, with Adam Wexler out, Adam Clanton was joined by Ross Villarreal and Josh Jordan. The guys broke down the Astros' win to even their series with the Twins and shared their thoughts on the Rockets' latest additions. Plus, they reacted to the Jaylen Brown trade and discussed Cristian Javier's upcoming return to the Astros on Friday—this time out of the bullpen rather than the starting rotation.

keeps punishing baseballs. I don't know what that innocent baseball

it landed somewhere near the bullpen and the Astros turned
that game upside down. It wasn't a World Series game
against the Phillies, but man, what an absolute nuke that

Jordan hit his second Grand Slam of the month. And
he has been actually kind of in a mini slump,
but prior to that, he's been having one of his
most amazing seasons, and that's saying something for him. So
Astros managed to come back on Joe Ryan and the Twins.
They even up that series, and of course that gives
us a rubber game tonight. That's definitely a topic the

Houston Rockets. The worst kept secret in Houston, the fact
that Marcus Smart was going to sign here, reunite with
Ime Udoka from their days together in Boston, and bring
his defensive prowess, locker room presence, all that kind of stuff.

That's fantastic. That's all well and good. Uh just see
his his shooting over the last few seasons. I mean,
it's just, you know, I know that he's an EMA guy,
and I know that you want to have a certain
kind of reputation as a team, a kind of stylistic
play or whatever you want to call it.

But you need shooters, So of course they.

Went out and got Bogdan Bogdanovic, and uh, I think
the like the rap on him is that he's got
to stay healthy. But man, those numbers look very very
good from a shooting standpoint. Don't know how much time
he will get in the rotation, honestly, don't know what
the rotation will look like. You're still trying to ease
Fred van Vliet back into things. You're still trying to, uh,

make sure Steven Adams is good to go, and then
you're trying to kind of get everybody on the same page.
People forget I think I think they do when having
conversations about this Rockets organization and this team. You are
basically still having people getting used to playing with each other.
When you consider the fact that Fred van Vliet didn't

play a single minute last year in a Rocket's uniform
with Kevin Durant. That's why I brought up the whole
Kyrie Irving situation scenario as outside the box, bleak chances
of it happening whatever you want to call it, it is.
It is something that at least, if nothing else, you
would have a little bit of familiarity with your two

key components on the floor. But look, if Fred van
Vliet's healthy, and if Fred van Vliet is effective, and
you had Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovitch to this Rocket's core,
that I guess brings back Outbran Shing Gooon.

The Jalen Brown situation is fascinating to me because he
was like the ringleader for NBA rumors and smoke and
all that kind of stuff, and now it's like, ah, hey,
asking price is kind of steep for four first rounders
for a guy who's a malcontent all of a sudden
in Boston. It's kind of interesting to watch how that
market is fizzling a little bit for him. So if

they do indeed stand pat, I don't think they. I
don't think they're done by the way. I think they're
going to try, like you know what, to move off
of Dorian Finney Smith's contract.

We shall see.

But very interesting last twelve to twenty four hours for
the Rockets kind of knew that the Marcus Smart move
was going to come down. But whether or not you
knew that they would go out and get a bona
fide shooter like they did, a very good one, by
the way, very very good one. He We've witnessed him
hurting the Rockets firsthand, and so that's one of those
guys like Marcus Smart frankly, that you'd rather him be

on your team than have to play against him. Marcus Smart,
whether he's shooting well or not, is always a fantastic defender.
It's just these two guys win healthy. Those are the
two words, win healthy. And if they are I like it.
I like the moves, they're not, you know, I'm not
over the moon about them. I'm not planning parade routes.

I do think that the Rockets, you know, addressed the
couple of needs and we'll see how the offseason goes.

Hard to believe that we are now flipping the calendar
to July. I keep saying this, I just feel like
this year is flying by so fast, especially from a
Houston sports calendar, and especially in light of what's happened
on that sports calendar, you would think it would be
going by slower. Maybe for some of you guys it is,
but for me, I feel like it's flying by, and
before you know it, we can say it this month.

This month, training camp begins for the Houston Texans. So
July first, we're already past the midway point and a
lot to get to. Obviously, last night's baseball game is
something is up for discussion. Obviously the Rockets items that
I just mentioned, and obviously more NBA. The hilarious part
about the Lebron James departure from Los Angeles is now

it's like, okay, whose idea was this? Like, in so
many words, it's not exactly how it happened. But if
indeed you know Rich Paul and Clutch Sports and that
camp with Lebron James, like, yeah, we went ahead and
told the Lakers that we wanted to leave. You guys
can go ahead and plan your offseason without us, and
then you kind of hear about how things have gone

on the Lakers side of things that they sat down
with Luca and started talking about the offseason plans and
Lebron James name like basically practically never came up. Then
it's kind of like he said, he said, situation. Bottom
line is Lebron's not gonna be there, and now, all
of a sudden, the Los Angeles Lakers are like assembling

the white boy super Squad of the future if you
look at the money they spent just in the last
twelve to twenty four hours themselves. In fact, I'll get
to a very very very good nickname for the Lakers
who are suddenly throwing around money. I don't know, like
I feel like the Lakers money that they're spending is
a little bit smarter, I'll tell you who.

New England area. They're about the only ones who are
taking up for him, because apparently, if you have like
some sort of struggles in your family and or country,
then that completely excuses any type of behavior on the
baseball field, both in the lines and outside the line.

what happened between him and the Nationals last night is

strikeouts and thirteen innings pitched and you know, eight for

love because even though he is getting paid all that money,

some of these mentally taxing situations in sports for an individual.

out there trying to close out a game when every
guy that comes to the plate is looking to be
the one that kind of cracks that armor. Man, he
has been absolutely fantastic. So lots of love to Josh Hater,

You know, maybe pitches aren't thrown the same. You don't

the division and frankly the American League in general, is

of competition after that. The drop off is steep, and

Josh Haden is gonna be a big part of this

one way or another as to whether or not the
Astros were able to kind of maybe finally get over
the hump, get that winning a winning record is what
it takes right now, a winning record to lead the

we see from c J Stroud? He was on all

Talk, and then what happened in the season after and
especially last season, it's it was like, ooh, maybe he

he loved CJ. Everybody loves CJ. Stroud. What wasn't to
love at that time? But to hear David Montgomery, I
guess I think it's it's particularly interesting for him specifically
because he hasn't even played with CJ.

He's the new guy, and he's not just any new guy.
He's the starting running back. He's the guy that's tasked
with helping to be a part of changing a side
of the football that just frankly, has left a lot
to be desired over the past few seasons. And for
him to say that publicly, that's interesting to me, especially
that last part.

I'm just gonna say, I told you guys, so.

It's all nice and I like hearing it, and we're
hearing it from the we played the the with the
clips for maziz al Shire and from Daniel Hunter saying like, hey,
the operation looks different on offense, that they're getting set
up a lot quicker. And like DeMont said, he wasn't
here last year when these guys couldn't get lined up
in time for CJ to change a play or to
you know, have a hot route, just do something different.

So hopefully they are seeing something different because that was
a bit concern last year, right, how many times would
they get down the one yard line you have a
false start or two guys in motion at the same
time and end up having fair bear and have to

Yeah, look, I was talking to somebody in the media,
obviously going to protect the innocent. This all comes down
at the end of the day, like whose feet does

you can talk about the players, but at the end
of the day, this is Nick Kyley to a little

bit of a lesser extent, not much, but it's Demiko Ryans.
And what this person was saying is, you know, why
does everybody love Demico so much? Why does he get
all this? Why does he get all the raw raw?
Why does he get And I know the answer, if
for no other reason than this person was basically like,

he smiles a lot. But it's one of the most
undisciplined teams in the NFL. There's nothing I can really
argue to that point. The amount of dumb penalties the
Texans have gotten just in Demiko ryans is three year
tenure is it's awful.

I have said that a number of times, even while
the defense was playing at an elite level, even while
the defense was bailing the offense out actually scoring points
for them. Let alone, giving them extra possessions, disrupting everything

whether it was you know, name this whatever tight end,

second or third stringer behind Dalton Schultz getting a false
start a tight end.

Just I'm telling you, man, like, when somebody says, hey,
Dimiko doesn't have a very disciplined team, it really it
hurts my heart to say that that is a very
accurate assessment, because I do love Demiko Ryans. I love
him in a large part because I covered him as
a player and I know the kind of guy he is,
and you never know these guys for real, and you know,

I'm never gonna pretend that I do. It's not like
we're boys or something like that. But you get a
sense of who a person is, at least as a leader.
From that standpoint, Demiko Ryan's very very easy to root for.
But if somebody's gonna tell me that Demico Ryans has
one of the more disciplined teams in the NFL.

I'm gonna laugh in their face because it's just not true.

But and that's the real question, who's that on If
they're not getting the play quick enough and getting lined
up quick enough to where they can make some adjustments
to what the defense is giving them. Is it because
CJ's too slow? Or is it because Kaylee's getting the
play to CJ too slow?

And I'll tell you another thing, is it pertains to this?
How many times last year specifically? And this probably has
happened throughout Demiko's tenure, because that's what we're talking about
right now. It really doesn't matter what's happened in the past,
because now we're talking about this current regime. How many times, Josh,
would you come out of a timeout and get a
like a a playcock violation, play clock violation or excuseable?

That's the one thing I'm just like, I don't care
who you are. You can have plays blow up in
your face, you can have this down and the other
false starts.

Those aren't rate and surely you wouldn't hope for those.

or play properly or have a play clock violation, I

First of all, not surprising that they're good at it.
They're they're pretty good at managing the strike zone to
begin with, so it's not surprising that they'd be good
at this. I think the most interesting thing for me

Astros today, but just watching the league on a day
to day basis, is watching teams kind of refine their

approach to when they want to challenge SA, saving them
for situations like that. You know, I can't recall too
many scenarios recently where you would say from the Astros
that all that that that's a bad challenge, that's the
bad spot. You know, you're challenging a three to zero
pitch when you know, worst case scenario, you're three to one.
And we've seen another teams do it. We've seen another

teams fall into that trap, you know, with with early challenges,
seemingly meaningless challenges, and it catches up to them. So
that's what I think is interesting, is watching teams figure
out how to play the game now within the construct
of these new rules and the Altuve thing, it's probably
the least surprising thing to me, Like, just like everything else,

he's going to be super aggressive, right, He's just gonna
he's going to fire away, fire away, fire away, and
he's going to do it well and he's going to
get a lot of them in I don't care what
he said in spring training, he was always going to

Also curious your thoughts on the start of Mike Burrows
a little bit rough in the beginning and then got
a lot better, and can you explain what has been
going on with him and setting up in different parts
of the rubber this season and what he's trying to
accomplish with that.

Yeah, So, so, first of all, just to start as
a whole, you know, really rocky at first, and you know,
it's a little bit concerning to see anytime he has
lack of command because he gives up fly balls, he's
going to give up home runs. The thing that you
want to control is the walks and the free passes.
And two walks and a hit by pitch in that
first inning, like he's kind of he's fortunate to get

(02:15:20):
out of there with three. But he settled down nicely,
really pitched off of his change up, which I think
the combination of getting the ball down in the zone
and pitching off of his change up I think is
his best formula. So it was nice to see him
settle into that. But but in regards to moving around
the mound, that's just trying to find kind of the
right attack angle.

His his fastball.

Speaker 11 (02:15:42):
His ball moves a lot, particularly his fastball, and sometimes
it'll take off on him a little bit. And if
he's getting a lot of armside run, which he does,
and he was especially early in the game yesterday, he
was losing a lot of pitches on his arm side
out of the zone, you just you know, you try
to fix it up mechanically. But if that's I'm not working.

honest evaluating in these.

really being stabilized over the course of the last you know,
it's been almost two months now, has been the major

be really honest with yourself and really honest with these
guys on not only Okay, you're healthy and you're through
this rehab process, but how well are you throwing the ball?
And lean on you know, the scouting department and the
evaluation department. And I don't have the answers because I'm

not looking at these, uh you know, watching these rehab
assignments as closely as they are. But I mean, obviously
Hunter Brown, the way EMI has thrown the ball recently,
if that continues, he's definitely you know, your number two,
number three option. Peter Lambert has been the most consistent,
and after that, it's just kind of who's throwing the
ball the best.

more effective when that fastball is more around ninety three

the bullpen only a couple innings at a time instead
of having to start, maybe that VLO will be a
