another Rockets game out on the East Coast. They took
care of business last night, and I gotta tell you,
after watching that game, wex a couple things came to mind. One,
I have not been posting enough on my burner accounts.
That's what I thought. Number one and number two, man
if Katie wrote all that kind of stuff and it

was real, can you really blame him? I mean, I'm
not saying that he didn't have any help last night,
but I am saying that that probably wasn't albre and
Shingoun's best effort ever in the history of his career.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Uh, that's probably true. He was fair right, Probably not
what I would take out of last night. No, no, no,
I'll tell you what I take guy last night. Number one,
first and foremost, Katie is ridiculous. I mean it wasn't fifty,
it wasn't sixty, what even forty. It was what they needed.

It was what they needed, and it was just so efficient.
I mean I look up, I thought he had thirty one.
He actually had thirty five, and then I look at
the shooting and it's just like, what do he missed
six shots? Maybe five?

He was fourteen of twenty, wouldn't he Yeah, so he
missed six shots. He's just incredible. And it's like, is
it okay to simultaneously marvel at what he's doing, especially
at the age he's doing it, while also saying, hey, man,
he probably shouldn't have to be doing all this right
now just to bail you out against a shorthanded Charlotte

Hornet squad.

I wouldn't say he bailed them out. He bailed himself out.
And he even has said so after the game, what
do you mean as soon as he came in the
game in the fourth quarter, they immediately went on a
run and cut into what was once an eleven point lee.

He was well aware of it. Charlotte went on the run.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yes, yeah, they come, they built a double digit lead
without him. Yeah, it was very James Harden of him
against the Clippers well in the playoffs, scored the last
well they brought him back in the game. Man, I'm
amazed at how closely people watch this team. It's pretty
obvious that some of them on the Twitter sphere do
and yet see things very, very differently. The Rockets got,

obviously a lot from Kevin Durant Early had ten in
the first quarter, had ten in the final three minutes.
He was the only Rocket to score in the last
four and a half minutes. They did some things right.
They've played very good defense, and they also benefited from
a little bit from who they were playing. I think
he probably caught an off night with Brandon Miller. I
think they forced him into taking tough shots. But he's

probably not gonna have another night like that, maybe in
his entire career in terms of missing shots. You're gonna
see a ton of games like that from LaMelo though.
And that's the best part about playing the Hornets is
because you know that's gonna happen at some point. At
some point, he's going to try to shoot them out
of the game, and he did that last night. He
almost did that here in Houston. But too many of
his other teammates were playing well. It's I think Charles

(03:05):
Lee's done an awesome job with that team. I think
they've drafted well the last couple of years. I think
Brandon Miller is a good player. I think Konk Nipple
is an outstanding player. They obviously were missing two other starters.
They still put a pretty good product on the court.
Their roster has gotten significantly better. And you'd expect, especially
as they started playing good basketball, that kind of winning

basketball that LaMelo knows nothing about, it would rub off
on him.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
But he plays the same way.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
If you think just because you want to it's Friday,
anything goes Friday. If you want to bash Alpa and Shangoon, well,
LaMelo ball is the Alpera and Shangoon of the Hornets.

Oh look, we're going to have a whole segment dedicated
to that jerk. Just well, I don't care about the
other stuff yet. Yeah, but if he sucks at basketball too,
then he did last night.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
He just needs to someone needs to coach him. That's
all there is to it. And I'm amazed this far
into his career it hasn't happened. Now that they have
a good team, I wondered if it would happen. I
think it will happen. Just silly shots. I mean, you
might think you can make it, and you might make it,
but you got four other teammates plus you can He
could have driven to the basket five hundred times last
night and he wouldn't have been stopped on any of them.

He might have missed, but he could have done whatever
he wanted. And he's just taking low percentage shots over
and over and over and over again. And that's what
coaching should get out of him if he can't figure
it out for himself. But we'll see Charlotte again until
next year's regular season. Probably will never see them in
the postseason. I don't expect the Hornets to be playing
for anything anytime soon. And I just said never, so

that's literal, that's never. I don't think they will ever
see the Hornets in the playoffs unless both Seattle and
Las Vegas pushed the Rockets to the Eastern Conference, which
I don't think is about to happen. I do think
they're going to join the NBA, and I do think
we're going to cease a little bit of shifting with
who's in the West and who's in the East. Just
don't think it's going to involve the Houston Rockets. But

they get a four point win last night. Spring training
as it has been since the eleventh ended today. Spring
training as it will be with games being played nearly
every single day, starts tomorrow. Well, they don't go to
the field and go through workouts on days they have games.
They get on buses and drive to the field, or
they do that in the.

Regular season kind of they go through workouts before the.

Game starts, exactly because they don't bust to any of
them and they're almost all at night.

They do on the road.

bus trip.

to say that, you know, throwing live BPS, which we
will talk about today, and you know, taking bunting practice
and whatever else it is you do during spring training,
throwing off to the side, talking to your buddy, getting
all of your analytic measurements taken care of. On one

of the side fields or one of the areas of
the West Palm Beach Complex that has fourteen pitching mounds
next to one another and you can take care of business. Oh,
a lot of that will cease to happen on a
regular basis now that tomorrow brings baseball. There is Major
League Baseball exhibition games. Today we saw our first challenge,

and I think we'll see a lot more of them
in these games for practice than we would normally see
in a real game coming up on March twenty six,
when the Astros and everybody else gets together. We've got
most of the games for you, and we do have
tomorrow's game for you obviously right here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety the long awaited return to the Mound
as the opening day spring training pitcher Colton Gordon.

there's nothing like seeing Emi go against actual competition, as

it were. It's not really it's not real competition, but
just seeing him facing batters, that's just kind of gives
you a sneak peek, kind of gets you a bitten
by the bug all over again. And it's it's one
of the things about this time of year that gets
you juiced for baseball season because you know it's right
around the corner and that guy being in an Astros
uniform and potentially doing some good things too, maybe great things,

I don't know. We'll see is something that does that
as well. We'll get into a lot of other things today.
The ending to yesterday's women's hockey game was fantastic, even
better than I thought it was because after the fact,
going back and seeing first of all, the call we
just got done talking earlier this week about al Michaels,

you know, back when he had his fastball in nineteen
eighty and Kenny Albert did a great job with a
call yesterday did a lot with not having to do
too much. I guess sometimes I think guys in those
situations always wondered if they actually script stuff out, like
if it's the Super Bowl or if it just comes naturally.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
I don't think in these games there's much to script
out because you don't know how it's going to play
out once you've gotten overtime. He just made a call.
Here's what the player did, made move, put it in
the net. Obviously, the pictures in a gold medal game
are going to take care of it. The video is
going to take care of it. You're doing to play
by play and the picture, the picture behind the goal
was fantastic. Yeah, he's good, and I think most announcers

should recognize that the moment is what it is, and
you're there, you should recognize it long before it happens.
It would have been interesting if it was the shoe
the skate was on the other foot, and it certainly
could have been the way the game went, not scoring
until the final two minutes to force overtime, and then
the overtime goal that they had, which also it wasn't
just they scored. It was an absolutely spectacular play and

it just kind of came out of nowhere as they
were able to clear get a pass out front when
Canada was making a change, made a great move against
the loan remaining defenseman and that's all, she wrote.

Tim Legler stopped by the Matt Thomas Show. We will
hear a portion of that conversation. I love that they have.
I guess the word isn't elevated. He's in a new role,
but the role that he's in is somewhere I think
he should have been for a long long time, which
is on broadcast during games. I know that watching him
be an analyst in a studio setting and all that

kind of stuff has its merits, and he has certainly
made a name doing that. But he's just so good
at anything he touches that's NBA related that I just

stopped by the Matt Thomas Show featuring Ross to have
a whole conversation about not only the rockets so far,
but he'll be on the call when they go to

Madison Square Garden. Matt Thomas said something on the broadcast
last night. You've been to MSG before, right just outside?

Oh that's right. We had this conversation, seen it. I
have not been in it. He thinks it's overrated.

Well, from a watching a basketball game venue as a broadcaster,
I imagine that it is.

I've been in there multiple times for different things, NBA games, concerts.

It's like it's a older ballparks in baseball. Like you're
not going in there and saying, oh my gosh, this
is all these things. It's if you're not recognizing why
it's awesome, then you might have that because such a.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Different energy though for sure, like it's not I'm talking
about a run of the mill February game for the
Knicks against the Rockets, for example, it's gonna have a
different buzz than any other arena in the league.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
True, but currently, like Saturday night, you got two of
the six best teams in the NBA on the court.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
It's a rematch in the nineteen ninety four NBA Finals.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
I'm sure most of the people who talk about the
game between now and Sunday night at seven twenty nine
that play for these two teams or organizations will get
asked a lot of questions about it, as they should,
and by a lot, I mean zero.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Well, they should have more asked of them.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
All Right, we know what you ask of us. It's
to entertain you. We will do that for the next
four hours a little bit less. Now get you into
the weekend, and we are often running here on a
Friday edition of the program. KD carrying the Rockets again
last night. Bet his back is getting sore. No, seriously,
how did you feel about that effort? Wex already kind
of paraphrased how he thought he would characterize the effort

by KD last night, But I want to get into
that a little bit more, as the Rockets actually gained
some ground last night as well. He got a little
help from a team in front of them, and now
they're in front of that team.

Speaker 3 (11:28):

At mid court with seven, six, five four double pump shot,
left side got its seventeen feet ran.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
Again with a clutch basket.

Speaker 6 (11:41):
One o three ninety eight twenty one seconds are running.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
That gave the Rockets the likelihood of a victory. Had
a lot of opportunities to really make it a little
bit easier on themselves. Gave up a couple of late
threes to the Hornets, who opened up the fourth quarter
by missing one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
now eleven consecutive three point opportunities. They still had four
more to attempt, and they made two of those down

(12:06):
the stretch. Kan Ka Nipple hitting of them, and the
Rockets were still able to get the victory. They definitely
turned up the defense after the opening quarter. The Hornets
were looking like they were going to bury the Rockets,
just like they did here in Houston. Rockets had just
enough offensive answers to state within reach, and then when
their defense turned it up. Hornets shot less than forty
percent on the second half. They shot twenty five percent

(12:28):
on their three point attempts in the second half, and
the Rockets also turned the ball over only one time
in the fourth quarter. Big huge strides in certain areas
would go a long long way for the Rockets to
be a much more formidable foe for everybody in the
Western Conference, pretty much so far in the Eastern Conference,
and they obviously have another Eastern Conference game tomorrow night

(12:49):
against the Knicks. They've been awesome, even with losing those
two games in dreadful fashion at home back to back
Knights in Houston against Charlotte and Boston just before the
All Star break. Now fifteen to four against the Eastern Conference.
Those are two of their losses. They obviously lost to
the Pistons to open up their home schedule, and an
overtime loss is us all. I wish they had even

(13:11):
more games against the East. And after this road trip
that follows their two game homestand next week they only
have one more road game against the East. They actually
only have eight more road games at all after they
get off this next road trip, which will be three
more games, and they'll get everything there. They're supposed to
forty one dates at home, forty one dates on the road.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
So you're saying, if they can just get out of
the Western Conference, they'll be in good shape in the finals.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Well, they're probably gonna play Detroit or New York, so
can you wait till Monday?

Speaker 3 (13:42):
But areance you know what? That's fair? That's fair?

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Yeah, if they I mean, I would pick the Rockets
to win the NBA Championship if they were in the finals,
probably under every scenario, because if they've shown me that
they can beat all these West teams, whoever the three
they might face, then I'm not going to turn around
and say, yeah, but.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
I'm with you there.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
I don't know that they could beat this team. They'd
have to get an incredible I mean, if injuries dictated
their path, let's say, maybe I would think otherwise. But
it's interesting just last night. Also from an Eastern Conference standpoint,
I don't think there's any question that the Knicks have
played themselves. It can strong consideration to be a threat
in the East, both with what they've done previously, last

(14:19):
year and obviously, more to the point, what they're doing
this year, except they can't beat the Pistons and they
can't hardly compete with them for four quarters. Was a
blowout until the second half of the game, but it
was that a blowout in favor of the Pistons. So
the Knicks will be coming off a loss to open
up their post All Star Game portion of their schedule,
and the Rockets obviously will be coming off of a win.

(14:39):
Thirty five for KD fourteen to twenty from the floor Rockets.
I don't think this is crazy to give this number,
even though it's remarkable. They basically don't lose. As long
as Kevin Durant hits fifty eight percent of his shots.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
That's a pretty high number.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Obviously, he doesn't shoot fifty eight percent on the season,
but this is Kevin Durant. He can make that happen,
and he has now on a number of different occasions.
The most recent one, obviously was last night, But just
putting that number out there and that number on the
board for the Rockets, that was the fourteenth time they
have done that. They have have seen him do that,
I should say fifteenth time. They don't have any losses

(15:19):
in any of those games except the two that went overtime.
They've not been beaten in regulation. Was any game where
he's made fifty eight percent of his shots or better?
They actually have two losses and both of them are overtime.
So the opening night, no, oh, that wasn't one of them.
They didn't shoot fifty eight percent on over I got
he had because he had a great game that night.
Oh dude, fifty six.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
Wake up. I really had a good game.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
Yeah, oh well, Alprynchingun had the best game that night,
as I recall, I think he had thirty nine.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
He had a very good night.

And again, fifty eight percent, it's a pretty high number,
but he's had a bunch of high scoring games. I
pointed that number out so I could put it up
against what he did last night. Also, he had his
twentieth thirty point game as a Rocket. Their record is
nowhere near as good when he scores thirty because many

of those nights that they had to. And they kept
doing this and he kept taking shots, and well they don't.
Nobody else is scoring. He shot forty percent in a
thirty point game. He shot forty six percent in a
thirty point game. Not that many of his fifty eight
percent shooting games we're also thirty point games. He just
goes out there, he's efficient, then the team is efficient,
the scoring is balanced a little bit more as much,

(16:31):
and you go out and you get victory. So needing
him to get thirty five points last night, because if
he scores thirty one, you lose. They needed him to
get those points last night, unfortunately, because they couldn't put
him away before he right when he came back in
the fourth quarter, and you really should have. You know,
the Grant Williams shot in the in the mid range
that bounced in that kept them in the game. The

(16:54):
game would have been over if he misses the Rockets
defensive rebound. But then they also allowed them to get
too very good looks at three pointers late and Kinnipple
made two of his three. Obviously, Miller missed his, He
missed almost all of his last night, But the game
would have been over if they had gotten a couple
of offensive rebounds. The Hornets had half of their offensive
rebounds in the game.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
Just in the fourth quarter. They had six of them.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
Je was a killer two things Number one the Rockets,
and I'm not saying they only have one fatal flaw,
but this is definitely one of them. They're horrific at
defending the three point line, like horrific.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
You're gonna get so many wide open shots to.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
Where if you're a team that's even remotely good at
shooting the three, you're gonna be in good shape.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
And it's what happened. In the early portion of the game.
They kept making their threat.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
I think they made five in the first quarter and
then what well, I know, and that's when they had
their best stretch.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
But again, they did this the whole game in Houston.
They're seventh in the league after last night.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
Yeah, I mean, any team that's going to be good,
I know, any team that's even remotely good. If you're
a top fifteen, I'll just take half the league top half.
You're going to have success against the Rockets if your
shots are falling that night, because they're gonna be falling
because you're gonna be wide open taking them.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Well, so which is it. Do you think they're good
at it or not? What defending the three?

Speaker 7 (18:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (18:16):
No, I oh, you're saying the Rockets are good. I
thought you were talking about the Hornets are a good
three point shooting team.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
I mean again, some nights, I'm not gonna say, Wow,
what a great job they did getting in Brandon Miller's face.
He missed eleven of twelve threes. He shot too many
for a guy who wasn't making any And again, just
like LaMelo, you got an opportunity to take better shots,
go ahead and take them. They did defend the three
well statistically clearly as the game went on. They were
hot in the first quarter, they weren't the rest of

the game. Was it the Rockets defense? I don't know
of the Rockets defense for the season. There's only six
teams that allow a lower three point shooting percentage than
they do.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Yeah, analytics, statistics versus the eye test.

Speaker 3 (18:54):
All I'm saying is we're.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
Fifty some odd games into the season and a lot
of misses have happened against their defense.

Speaker 1 (18:59):
Yeah, or they're just missing wide open shots, because that
is that's the same thing you're playing defense. But if
you're leaving a guy wide open and he misses it,
that's on him. That's not on you.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
When it's Alprin Shangun or a men Thompson, what do
you mean what about when they missed wide open threes?
Is that the defense or the player? Because when Charlotte
kept allowing, well, in a men's case, I don't really
mind him taking those shots in the corner two of
his three to three point attempts, and they again they
nearly went in, they went in and out. You probably

need to take those shots, and he did. Alprin Shingun's
a totally different story. Someone's you gotta stop these these
three point attempts. With seventeen seconds on the shot clock.
You can't be open enough for me to say that's
a good shot for the Rockets on any possession.

I still think we're on a different page. I'm talking
about the Rockets three point defense. Well, you just said, oh,
you're giving up all these wide open threes. Maybe it's intentional,
because yeah, I want this guy shooting threes.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
He's no good at it.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Like Grant Williams last night hit two in the first
like not or three minutes of the second half, averages
six point four points per game.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Hurt and not in their rotation. But he's like awful.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
He's thirty six percent overall, he's a twenty seven percent
three point shooter, and he kept dropping him against the
Rockets because he was getting wide open looks. He's yes,
this year he's been poor. He's a career thirty eight
percent three point shooter. He's also doe. That didn't help.
We really didn't help because he's stronger than Alpera and
Shangoun I know, and he couldn't do it.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
He's like, he doesn't look like he's strong. He's strong.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
From last night's game that that they did not do well.
They did. Actually, the block party they got started in
the first quarter was incredible, but they kind of set
themselves up for that, I think intentionally. If you listened
a little bit closer to what Kdi had to say
after the game, and if you were watching their defense
coming out of the All Star break, that did not
look like the kind of defense they played very often
in the first half, you know, doubling a way out top,

blitzing guys just kind of whoever had the ball, not
any particular player, but it left the lane open until
their help defenders at six' nine and six eleven and
six eleven kept defending the. Rim three block shots in
the first quarter FOR kd eight block shots in the,
game a men And jabbari blocking guys on dunk attempts

at the, rim and Then Kalk brenner got him, back
but they would have BEEN i think the numbers at
the half were forty six percent shooting in the first
half for The, hornets but if you take out the eight,
blocks they shot fifty or six, Percent so, essentially if
The rockets didn't block, it it basically was going. In
the block party was wild last night they getting all
those block, shots and k was a.

Big part of. It, yeah, yeah it. Was it.

Was it was an interesting game and in definitely the
type of game that if The rockets had lost in
a close, fashion, especially it just would have been another gut.

Punch i'm glad they gutted it. Out it wasn't aesthetically
pleasing at, times but nobody.

Didn't really talk about the good portion of the, game

Them they only seventeen to two runs and they scored
fourteen straight. Points they got stop after stop after, stop

offense as smoothly as we've, seen even for a short
stretch most of the.

Season, well and they did the same thing in the second.
Quarter it just didn't look like it because they were
only up by, one but that's how bad the first quarter.
Went and The hornets hit a three pointer at the
buzzer to end the, half so that made it a
one point, game but they outscored them twenty nine to,
nineteen AND i think with like two minutes left last,
night The hornets had only scored either thirteen or fifteen. Points,

like the defense you're talking about was definitely. THERE i just,
AGAIN i feel like they're still playing with one arm
behind their back in two different, ways IF i can
say that, Mouthful but.

they need to be to help their team. Win it's
not really the case with, him AND i was watching
it last, night like he had situations where they clearly
were determined not to rotate to him when they were
trying to run extra traffic At duran Or, shengun and
they're saying they're going to live with Aman thompson catching
the ball with fifteen twenty feet of space at the
three point line and live with the results and a
couple of those he shot, missed you, know they weren't particularly.

Close but then there's other plays he catches it and
regardless of all the, space he still drives it down the,
gut and he's so athletic that he can come to
a jump stop in the, paint you, know hang in
the air longer than other guys and still make a
play at the rim or make a pass from that
position to put pressure on the. Defense so he's still
able to be effective and put up actually pretty respectable

stat lines, offensively even though that shot right now is
a win for the defense if he takes, it very
few guys have been able to pull that off. Normally
if you're exposed to that, extent it becomes a real
problem and it becomes a dilemma for the coach to
keep you on the. Floor it's not the case with
tom And, thompson because clearly you want his, defense but
there's a lot of great defenders in this league that

couldn't shoot. That eventually they're taking off the floor because
the weakness starts to overshadow what they are doing well.
Offensively it's not really the case With Aman. Thompson he's
still able to walk that line as a playmaker and
a finisher around the rim and a, rebounder and like
the push he has up the floor in, transition there's
still so many things he can do well offensively without. That,

now if he ever figures that, out and you, know
he he just gets confidence and he continues to work,
on you, know tightening up his mechanics and there are
some things mechanically that he can work on if he
gets to that. Place, man now you have an all
league caliber. Player so we'll. See he's very very. Young
he's still having, success which hasn't forced him into addressing,

this probably to the extent that he needs. To by all,
accounts he's a, grindary he's in the, gym he. Works
so if that's the, CASE i think it will get.
There and certainly he's already shown great dramatic improvement from
the foul, line like that's really important for. Him but

and maybe over time next couple of seasons you might,
see you, know a pretty dramatic improvement there as.
