Speaker 1 (00:01):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the eighteen A.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Funny the eight team at you from Carbach Brewing. Wex
and ac col Thompson with you on this Wednesday afternoon
following Astros baseball. They took care of the A's last night.
They took out of the A's this afternoon. They've taken
(00:29):
five of the six games on this ten game homestand
and they're sitting five games above five D thirty and
twenty five. The Houston Texans were on the field today
for this week's first on field session of OTA's they'll
do it again tomorrow media less, and they'll do it
again on Friday. We've gotten the invite for that a
couple more next week. Mandatory mini camp comes up on
(00:53):
June eleventh. It was not a mandatory day today, and
that was a popular topic to ask some of the players.
Diss Al Shayir, will Anderson and the head coach of course,
Jamiko Ryans among those that we spoke with earlier this
afternoon too. After we got to see them work out
of course inside the bubble. Very very wet and thundery
(01:17):
and lightning e weather earlier this morning, so it was
pretty obvious they would take it inside. They've practiced outside
plenty of times in the rain. But when the idea
that you're going to hear the sirens go off, well,
there's no reason to start practicing out in the rain
when you know you're ultimately going to have to go inside,
which they did in their bubble was perfectly well equipped
to do so. So I'll share with you some of
(01:38):
my thoughts and observations and the beginnings of the answer
to some of those top five things to watch for
during OTA's and miniicamp, which we brought up on yesterday's program.
Always open to you both on the socials at Adam J. Wexler,
at Adam Clanton, at mister Cole Thompson, and of course
on the phones to seven one three, two, one two five,
seven ninety and NBA teams eliminate could come tonight. We're
(02:02):
getting close to the Nicks elimination thanks to last night
and a whole host of things to get us through
this for us final hour of the program.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
How how much was Demiko Ryans' shirt screaming for dear
life as it tried and struggled to just be worn.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
His shirt was struggling less than CJ. Stroud's Red seven jersey.
First two quarterbacks that were inside the bubble and working
out was Davis Mills and Keaton Slovas, and I was thinking, there's,
I mean, nothing's wrong with CJ. He's certainly going to
be here, and he normally would be there at that point,
but he wasn't quite the topic on social But I
(02:40):
wasn't about to say, well, CJ. Stroud not here in
the early portion of practice, is that's silly. That's not
the case. He ended up walking in, you know, minutes later,
but he had he did not have his jersey on
when he walked into practice, had a hoodie on, and
after he went through a couple of little drills, a
little warm up things, just loosening up his body. He
then very troubling to him. He was trying to pull
(03:03):
it on. It's over his hoodie. It did not look
very easy to do. Didn't have to ask for help
like guys do when they put their jersey on over
the pads on game day. But he finally was able
to take care of it. He went through the quarterback
drills and wasn't afraid of throwing the football there. But
there really wasn't much going on, and then when they
went into eleven on eleven work team drills, he didn't
(03:26):
take any of the snaps. He didn't make any of
those throws. The majority of them were made by Davis Mills,
who worked with both the ones and the two's, and
then Keaton Slovis.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Got the work.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Of course with the threes. There was no Graham Mertz
at practice today. But I also would note, if you
want to take attendance and say who was or wasn't
there at voluntary mini camp, it's probably hard to really
make an accurate count when a bunch of players did
not practice and a bunch of those players came to
(03:54):
the end once practice was over, they were on the
field going through whatever prom that is there on, not
even that they were hurt. But I can say at
least four or five veteran players that technically, if I
wanted to give you the attendance report saying this player
did not practice, this player was not here, this player
was not seen, and we get to view the entire practice,
you just don't get to video it or take pictures
(04:15):
of it. I can tell you five guys that will
be a factors on this year's team did not practice,
and those five players were also seen immediately after practice
going through whatever program they're on to get them going.
In CJ's case, the question obviously needed to be asked
of Dimiko Ryans what was the situation with him? He
obviously was not participating in what would normally be or
(04:36):
QB one's portion of team drills, and instead of being
specific to CJ, Dimiko gave an accurate answer about the team.
Everybody's got their own schedule. Everybody's on a different schedule.
You'll see some guys out here, you won't see some
guys out here. Some guys will be working, some guys
will be on a different plan. So we'll see if
anything is truly there other than we're watching his quote
(04:59):
unquote snap count. Probably there's more to it than that,
but nothing of great significance.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
I wouldn't. Did you think that his shoulder was hurt
last season?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Uh? Probably, but maybe not more so than I know.
He's gotten hit a bunch on his You know, when
you hurt your shoulder, whether it's you've landed on it,
or you've taken a hard hit on it, or you've
also been hit you know, right at the you know,
kind of the meeting point between the bicep and the
shoulder clavick, all those things there. He just took too
(05:30):
many hits. So whether it impacted his play hard to say,
But yeah, I would imagine there was a bit of
shoulder discomfort. Well, I don't think we're about to hear
of a significant recent procedure, and I don't think we're
gonna learn of any This is concerning as the season
gets here. Today is May twenty eighth. They've got play
(05:52):
a long way to go before their early September regular
season first game of the year.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Well, a couple of things.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
It wouldn't make much sense now if you hadn't said
anything already to talk about that, other than to tell
the people who thought he was having a sophomore slump
that they can go pound sand Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
I don't late in the season how guys are feeling,
especially quarterbacks, Yeah, and I do. It's gonna impact your play,
It's probably gonna impact your play calling, and it might
even impact the way you approach some plays if something's
just not quite feeling right. So that wouldn't surprise me
at all if that impacted Just one more thing added
to the numbers are what they are. First year very
(06:29):
very good. Second year not nearly as good. But there
were so many factors as to why I don't I'm
not really anti using this the phrase, I don't use
it much and you hate it, and I totally understand why.
But I also am a realist. He was worse than
a year two than he was in year one. I'm
also exactly the same amount of this guy's going to
be awesome. They got the right guy. He is there
(06:51):
QB one, and they're all set for the long term
as much as I was after his first good year
as I am now. As they head into year three
with siege, Stroud got to see Nick Kayley on the
walkie calling out plays as well for the first time.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
How did he look, Wex.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
He was on the far, far, far far side of
the field and he looked just fine. You look this
year later this week. But he was also calling out
plays to number ten, not number seven. So I'm not
all that enthused about here. I said in my walking
out with Wex video, I'm not going to tell you
how I thought Davis Mills looked today because A it's
(07:26):
not important, and B the angle they usually placed the
media's is not a particularly good spot to watch all
the throws out.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
I hope he takes every snap until the opening day.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
I will add that Demiico Ryans made it clear what
their preseason plans are. Jonathan Alexander reported just before practice
began today that they will also have a joint practice
session with the Lions, and then Dmiico, when asked about it,
made it clear they're gonna have one day of joint
practices with Carolina when they're here, and one day of
joint practices with Dan Campbell, joint practice with Dan Campbell
(07:57):
when they are there to face the lines, and again,
that usually means you script out what you want, you
get all the work in for your ones and twos
that you need, and then you make your way through
the game without needing to see those players on the field.
Doesn't mean you won't play them at all, but you
certainly don't need to see them because the work you
wanted against another opponent has already taken place.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
As it pertains to some of the baseball news of
the day, particularly the Renault Blanco is going to have
Tommy John surgery.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
In case you missed that or you're just getting into
your card. You hadn't heard yet.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
We got a tweet from Joe, who's a regular listener
and contributor to the show, and he kind of brought
up something that I had brought up a little bit earlier.
You know, will the Astros make a move for a
pitcher now that Blanco's done?
Speaker 4 (08:42):
And he actually said, well, in.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Addition to telling us we do a great show, which
I really appreciate that, Joe, he said, I'd sell high
on Jake Myers to see if we can get some
pitching help. You know, it's easy to say, hey, the
Astro's gonna have to go make a deal to get
a picture because of what's got going on.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
You mentioned Spencer Eric Getty.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
You know, if you still if you get Lance mccullors
continuing to do what he's done, which is, with the
exception of one really major setback, every time he's gone out,
it's gotten a little bit better.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Today was really good.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
And then you get Spencer are Getty back, you're you're
still probably gonna be looking for some.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Sort of help. But the other half of that equation
is always who are you giving up?
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Yeah, I would probably I wouldn't do the Jake Myers part,
that's not something I would do. You got you don't
have any on anybody else. You don't have anybody else
to go to unless you're going to thrust Chas McCormick
into a starting role. Are you to thrust Zach Desenzo
into a starting role?
Speaker 3 (09:39):
You're gonna get the Let's just say you decided, all right,
I will part ways with one of my outfielders to
go get pitching help.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Well, you're not.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
You're gonna want to try to move a Chas McCormick
in that scenario, and then you're faced with the same
thing we were talking about yesterday.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Who wants him?
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Yeah, you're not getting anything for Chas mcormy.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
And if you're getting something for Chas McCormick, he's the
Chas McCormick of pitching.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Do you want that?
Speaker 2 (10:02):
If they're moving Chaz, it's probably more of a clearing
salary than anything else. Just so you know, this month
where the Astros offense has been phenomenal, Jake Myers's got
a nine hundred plus ops this month nine eight after
today's game, hitting three thirty three twenty nine hits this
month with still games left to play this month he's
(10:23):
gonna have a thirty hit month now his defense, there's
three things about each player, especially the outfielders. They're hitting offense,
they're fielding, and they're throwing. They didn't have any errors
in the outfield today. But we also mentioned two of
the plays that jose Al tub made up against the
manual scoreboard, neither of which I think we're properly played,
(10:46):
but neither was worthy of an error. And Jake Myers
nearly able to run that ball down in the gap.
But when he did get to it and had a
hard time slowing down to turn around and try to
get a good relay throw to Jeremy Pagna to see
if they can throw out Arius, he couldn't even get
the ball to Jeremy without it bouncing like he lolly
popped his relay throw to Jeremy, who then turned and
(11:09):
fired a strike to Carottini. And this is where you
actually do give credit to a third base coach. We
spent yesterday mocking the Mariner's third base coach for sending
Cal Rawley the other day. Well, this third base coach
watched what was happening, knew Jake Myers, arm knew how
many steps it took for Jake to slow down Arius.
I don't even think it was running very are. I
(11:30):
think he was absolutely shocked that he was sent home.
But in that situation, you make the Astros make the play,
and one part of that play wasn't made. You got
a terrible relay throw to Jeremy Pana and it slowed
down his receiver of the throw and obviously him being
able to turn and fire at home and that's where
that first run came in for the A's. None of
these plays are errors, but just something that teams are
(11:52):
going to continue to probably take advantage of the outfield
arms of the Houston Astros, his being one of them.
But Jake Myers selling high, You're right, the time to
do it would be right now. The Astros aren't doing that.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
The time to keep him is also right now, because
you got to decide which it is.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Yeah, He's been a big reason why the Astros offense
has been exceptional this month. Their top five in every
category except for runs, the most important category still top
ten there but number one batting average in baseball in May.
Your Houston Astros last night helped a five straight eleven
hit games absolutely will help take a quick Break here
(12:29):
on the eighteen live at Carbach Brewing Here on a
Wednesday afternoon of the eighteen.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
The eighteen, on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Ninety Astros five three winners today over the Athletics of
the West Sacramento Variety.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
It was hilarious to hear both broadcasts Cruz at.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
Least once that I heard refer to them as the
Oakland A's, And of course TK was very professional about
excuse me not Oakland.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Eleven more against those people, really thirteen games against the
division foes. This was the first two.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
Yeah, I guess I feel like because we've talked about
the amount of decrease in the division games with the
the way the schedule is one.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Hundred and ten games outside the division every year.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
Now, yeah, that's a lot, but you know, when you
were playing, it's just I keep going back.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
To whatever year it was. I think it was nineteen
had to be right, that was the greatest Astros team
of all time where they beat the Mariners all but
one time. Really you couldn't, but you couldn't beat them
all nineteen times to make it a cool nineteen and.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Oh that year.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
But I'll take this version of the athletic because You
know what's funny about the Athletics. No matter what's been
going on and how much worse than this year they
have been, they have always found a way to get
the Astros trouble. During this run of I mean, frankly,
definitely division titles, but even World Series contention, they always
found a way to beat the Astros when they were
(14:09):
clearly an inferior opponent.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Yeah, took care of it today. Hopefully we'll have that
opportunity continue. I do think the A's did some things
that might make them more competitive and tougher to beat
on an every game basis, but they're probably also in
the position of being sellers once again. I want to
get to that point in the season. Astros and Race
begin a four game series tomorrow Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
(14:33):
and that'll close out their ten game homestand the game
of note this evening still to come the Seattle Mariners,
who have the same number of wins as the Astros
now both of them at thirty. They're hosting the Nationals
this evening. The Astros would be within one half game
of the Mariners if they come out on the bottom
tonight of that matchup against the Nationals, a couple of
(14:54):
other items from Texans earlier today. As you guys know,
I have a notebook at Texans practice. I don't know
how much emptying of the notebook is necessary for what
we were able to see today we're at practice. I
do have the notebook with me. I did use a
pen and write in it one partial sentence. Everything else
on the page is nothing but numbers, and the numbers
(15:17):
are representative of what we talked about as point number
one and what to watch for at Texans OTAs. We
know the names of the players that were brought to
this team this offseason via draft, a free agency, via
trade to make up their offensive line, and they were
all there. Every single offensive lineman available to them was
at practice today. It is a voluntary OTAs this week
(15:38):
and next, so it's good to see the numbers of
them there. Not a surprise if you heard me yesterday
making a very educated guess of what they'd look like
as a number one group. That's essentially what they look
like as a number one group. Albeit I did not
know that Jared Patterson and Jake Andrews would be snapping
to Davis Mills. But nonetheless, Cam Robbinson is your left tackle,
(16:00):
Lake and Tomlinson is your left guard. Jake Andrews took
the majority of the snaps as the center, the player
they added from the Patriots, but they did work Jarrett Patterson,
last year's center, into the mix a little bit. Titus
Howard starts at right guard. I believe that will be
definitely in the season, and obviously it was today, and
Blake Fisher is getting the early number one reps at
(16:22):
right tackle. Tay Ersery, their second round draft pick this year,
got work at both tackle spots, a little bit of
work later in the workout with the number ones at
right tackle, most of his work coming on the other
side at left tackle, with the two's Patterson obviously working
there at center, Jews Scruggs and as the left guard,
and I think that's where he will be third team
(16:45):
center today, plus also Jews Scruggs, Austin Deculus, who's brought
back by the Texans after he was a late round
draft pick a couple of years ago. That kind of
rounds out their true tackle depth. But with Ersery, Robinson,
Fisher did not see Trent Brown out there today, it
probably don't need Austin Deculis once they cut the roster
(17:08):
down to their fifty three plus sixteen.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Is this scenario OTAs in late May with the least
serious contact possible.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
And by that I mean none there was none. Is
that the biggest tease of all?
Speaker 3 (17:23):
When you're talking about a team that needs to see
improvement on the offensive line, Well.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Until we get back out there on Friday, it doesn't
mean a whole lot. This was today. Believe me, it
might not seem like it, but coaches are aware and
that have input and to do things deliberately on days
that they know the media is being going to be
out there. If we see the same five on Friday
doing the same things with the same group as ones
versus twos and threes, et cetera, then you start putting
(17:49):
it together. Okay, it looks like they specifically want this
group to get the number one reps. But let's say
Blake Fisher is now working with the twos and Tay
Nursery's working with the ones, and they give ed Ingram
an opportunity to bump up from the third group of
linemen which he was working with today, to work with
a second group or first group. You know, until I
get out there for a second practice and next week
for a third and a fourth. It's a little bit
(18:10):
hard to guess. And it's the same thing with players
that weren't on the field today. You know, Henry Totoa
didn't work out with the team today, but I can
tell you he's there, and I can tell you he
got in some work after practice. I can say the
same thing about Dalton Schultz. Christian Harris didn't work out
with the team today, but he's definitely there. We saw him,
just was not out there during the practice portion that
(18:31):
they were out there on the field for there RB one,
there RB two. They weren't there. They did not practice.
It was not unexpected for Joe Mixon not to be
there if you heard from Aaron Wilson over the weekend
on Sports Sunday. But Damian Pierce also did not practice today.
I'm not telling you he's not at the facility. I'm
not telling you he's not ready. I'm not telling you
they don't have him on a different plan. I'm not
even telling you he's not gonna be there on Friday
or tomorrow. I'm just telling you he wasn't working out
(18:53):
with the team today. So Daria Gunbawalle obviously, Woody Marks.
British Brooks are Jordan and JJ Taylor. Where you're five
running backs today for the Texas.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
What does it tell you about me that every time
you start to say British Brooks' name, I think you're
gonna say British Bulldog.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Well, there's only one of them, So they need a
second NFL player to join their team whose first name
is British for them to be a tag team.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
Yeah, because originally it was the British Bulldogs.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Now help me out here, because I need a little
bit of it. I know the British Bulldogs as a
tag team, and I know they're completely separate, but it
always makes me think of a different tag team. Now,
the Bushwhackers, Luke and but now, these were the two
gentlemen that showed off their arms by going up and
(19:46):
down on their way into the ring.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
And if you got the they are did the Sheepherders?
This is the Bushwhackers. No, and I don't think I
don't there's a second group of people. I did. They
never have a set name as a tag team duo,
the Bushwhackers. Okay, and then I'm all clear. Yeah, the Bushwhackers, Lunatics, and.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
The road Warriors were the legion of doom?
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Got it?
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Same tag team? All right?
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Well, yeah, there was no evidence of any of those
gentlemen being out there today. But since that was point
number one on what to watch for, at least, how
are they lining up? How do they view these guys
after they've looked at film, after they made all their signings,
after they brought in these free agents, after they traded
a way to opening day starters from last year's offensive line,
after they waived a third opening day offensive line starter
(20:34):
from last year from a line that didn't play well,
and obviously changed the hierarchy of what is being taught
with cool Popovich advancing to leading this offensive line group
obviously having a new OC. And I do think it's fair.
You've heard it from us, you've heard it from others,
you've heard it from sources inside the team. Every part
of what could be wrong with your offensive line, I
(20:54):
think has been discussed. Physical abilities, mental issues with communication
between the group that was out there, coaching techniques, and
dissension inside the room, and I mean both rooms, inside
the room of alignment and inside the room of coaches.
A lot of not on the same page stuff with
(21:15):
the coaches. With the players. It was obvious in their
lack of execution on Sundays and Saturdays and Thursdays and Mondays.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Is it bad that I want them to be going
through extensive pads contact type practice so that they can find.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Out at least a little bit about how this line
will look.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
This is those joint practices are exactly what you should want.
It's exactly what you're gonna see. Can this group, whatever
group it is, by the time they get to the
Panthers and Lions joint workouts, can they stop another team
who's again they're not scheming for them. The coaches during preseason,
which to see how they're not looking at film. They
don't have film first of all on Nick Cayley's offense,
(21:53):
and they're not saying, well, this is gonna work today.
They would never show anything like that. And then it'll
put that kind of time and effort into a joint
workout preseason game. But that's why, in that situation, you're
gonna see some of the physical nature of what needs
to be better or what is already where you hope
it is. Can you just physically hold your own you
know one thing Will Anderson Junior had to say today
(22:14):
when asked about Tay Urser is he is a big
human being. He moves very well for a guy his size.
He's got good bend. He has all the draft combine buzzwords.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
Down and my buzzwords now can play.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Yeah, he's got great dimensions.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
Yeah, but you know what, hearing a guy say something,
a guy like that saying something like that, even in
this very very diet practice setting, That's what I call it.
From now on, I'm wanna call it the crystal light
of practices. There's a modern reference from the eighties. I
like to hear a guy who's got the reps now, which,
(22:50):
by the way, sounds crazy to say that Will Will
Anderson Junior's got reps now.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
He said himself when asked about being in his third
season and kind of being a ve, he goes, heck,
I'm practically reaching unk status.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Seriously, we were just interviewing him at the Hilton Downtown
next door to Toyota Center, before we even had an
inkling that the Texans would draft him.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
And we were asking him about one of his coaches,
Bill O'Brien. Yeah, well, I do remember that I remember
this offensive coaches at Alabama now, and one thing about
Will Anderson and Ursery and all that, Like Will Anderson's
gonna get reps against Cam Robinson, Ariante Ursery and Blake
Fisher and no reps against Laramie Tunsell or Titus Howard. Now,
(23:37):
he might get a few looks against Howard, but Howard's
an inside player. Now, But I that's that's not a
good thing, no, Will No.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
I mean, look, say what you will and criticize, and
I did about Laramie Tunsoll, but I never criticized his
past blocking.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
I mean that's just something you didn't really have to
worry about.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
The pre snat penalties, yes, the all the kind of
stuff like that that comes with with a guy like him.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
Sure, but that was another dynamic of that whole him being.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
On the roster that we never talked about because you
just take that for granted everywhere.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
Yeah, left hands, as the sayings will go, starting today
and all throughout Demiko's time here, iron sharpens iron. We'll
see if they have talent on both sides. Mean, so
Nico versus Stingley, that's very iron sharpens iron. Yeah, and
there's a bunch of other matchups like that, and I
do believe Daniel Hunter versus Laramie Tunsel and Will Anderson
(24:34):
Junior versus Laramie Tunsel. That was very iron sharpens iron.
We'll see what develops.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
This year's gonna lower his swarm level.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
That swarm level is very very high. Heck, he worked
out with Miles Garrett this offseason.
Speaker 4 (24:46):
Well, then it should be very high. All right, we
will take a quick time out. We'll come right back.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
Final half hour here at Carbock Brewery is right around
the corner.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
It is the eighteen.
Speaker 1 (24:58):
The a on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Good.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
I could have another, but.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
It is the eighteen Sports Song seven ninety from Carbock Brewery.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
The Crawford Box cast is right around the corner.
Speaker 3 (25:20):
In fact, you might say that Chris Gordy is in
the on deck circle, which, by the way, he did
a wardrobe change. He walked in in a gray iHeartRadio
T shirt and now he's in the black one with
the red iHeart logo.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
Nice.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Come on out here and see him in his second
T shirt.
Speaker 3 (25:39):
That is one thousand percent the exact type of response
I would have expected from Adam Wexler.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
To what I just said.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
I mean, if you're not getting Chris Gordy wardrobe updates
on the eighteen, then what are you even doing? Why?
Speaker 4 (25:51):
What's the problem? They have a whole channel dedicated to
this on e Oh what are you wearing tonight?
Speaker 2 (25:57):
I mean there's no I mean there's no awards show
at eight o'clock tonight.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
And we're not even on TV today, so I can't
even make that analogy.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
We'll be back in the saddle tomorrow in studio, so
you take advantage of that aspect of it. Didn't mention
too much about the NBA postseason yet, We'll do that here.
Nick's valiant efforts, but kind of outplayed another great game
for Tyrese Halliburton. He even joked about the fact that
his dad was allowed to attend the game the whole
(26:26):
free Tyrese's dad, he kind of mocks, saying, you know,
he's he's not in jail. He's sitting in a very
very very nice home watching these games, and now it's
nice that he can come back to the arena in
the suite. But it was a very strong individual performance
and it's one of the reasons I love Ri Carlisle,
Like you know we do here on the show. He
(26:47):
kept trying to steer people away from Dude, we're playing
a team game here, you know. The individual numbers really
don't even matter, and we're not looking at him, and
you guys can look at him if you want, But
it's how he played the game and how the other
four guys out there played the game. Outplayed the Knicks
by such a margin late in the game, there wasn't
any drama to it could have been the way the
(27:08):
game went, and it definitely was played at their pace.
And now the Indiana Pacers, the four seed in the
Eastern Conference, are one went away from reaching the NBA Finals.
They've obviously not been in this position very often. There
aren't any NBA championships in the Pacers franchise history.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
And like the last time they got there, there was
a juggernaut waiting to smash them. They played the Lakers
during their their three peat run in the early two
thousands and they got slaughtered.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
I can't quite allow that word. What the titleless thunder
to be called a juggernaut. This is their first conference
finals appearance. Yeah, but let alone visit to the finals
or championship.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
How many games do you think it's gonna take for
the Thunder to absolutely curb stomp whoever comes out of
the East being the Pacers.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
View them as curb stopping the Wolves. Wolves make three
plays in game four. We're going back to tonight's Game
five in a two to two series, sure, but one
of the games that wasn't competitive. They lost by forty
I know, and they lost three times in the last series.
The last two series, they've gone seven and four.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
To me, it feels like when they lose like that,
they're just bored. I'm not even kidding.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
But Minnesota, good, Minnesota wasn't given the game. They took
it from them, correct, you know, they had a thirty
point lead in the blink of an eye because they
just so severely outplayed them. But Minnesota is facing elimination tonight.
It's in Oklahoma City. I actually, while I'm trying to
paint the picture of man, look how close they could
have to being a two to two series. And it
was very close. It's two point game. There were a
(28:47):
lot of fouls late to try to keep it a
one possession game. But it's still three to one and
they're playing in Oklahoma City. I don't think Minnesota is
extending this series tonight. Unfortunately, I would love for them
to be able to do that. Didn't talk about this yesterday,
and I don't know that we have the time here
to really flesh it out, maybe better for tomorrow's show,
and so we'll save it for that something that took
place in the last several minutes of that particular game.
(29:10):
I think the Knicks are done. I don't know that
they're done in five, but it's gonna be any enda
in Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder are going to
win their first championship since Movie to Oklahoma City, or
the Pacers are gonna win their first ever championship. That's
what the twenty twenty four twenty five NBA season produced well,
And on.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
One side, it's not a surprise at all. This will
literally be like a almost wired to wire championship. If
it's the Thunder, which I think it will be, I
don't think the Pacers probably come out of the East
at all.
Speaker 4 (29:43):
If Jason Tatum doesn't get hurt. I really believe that.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
It's definitely something to consider, especially since I was sitting
here saying, Oh, the Celtics are gonna win that series
they just lost. Yeah, but they're still gonna win the series. Well,
they lost again, I know, and they're still gonna win
the series. And yet as soon as he they went out,
they won.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
They won convincingly, too.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Convincingly, and so yeah, I think there's a chance they
could have won, and now they might get broken up.
I don't. The way that they played the Knicks didn't
give me much confidence that they were going to beat
the Pacers, to be honest with you, and gave me
no confidence they were gonna beat the Thunder.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
Yeah. I don't think anybody was beating the Thunder this
year in seven games.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
I just by the time we got to the postseason,
I really felt that now I said, and I meant
that they would have to prove it because they hadn't
done that last year. They did the same thing last year.
They just didn't win as many games, but they were
at the top of the Eastern or the Western Conference.
They were, you know, right there as one of the
most dominant teams in the entire league. And then they
(30:43):
just kind of felt they did a collective James Harden
in the postseason. They didn't show up when it mattered
the most. And they have not done that this year.
Although yes, They've lost very, very lopsided.
Speaker 4 (30:56):
Plural games in this run.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
But at the end of the day, when they're hoisting
the Larry O'Brien Trophy for the first time since they
were called the Sonics, nobody's gonna care.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
About those losses at all, and we're gonna say, yeah, this.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
Is a sixty eight win team that was the best
team in the NBA all season and they proved it.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
What does Anthony Edwards need to do to make this
not happen in the future? Fifty not tonight, I mean
career wise, back to back appearances in the conference finals.
His conference finals last year was better than it is
this year. So he's a year with experience and his
individual performance has gone down.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Yeah, I don't know if you know they this is
It's a lot like the Rockets, only they already have
their superstar.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
If you're in.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
Minnesota, you feel like, even though it seemed lopsided in
this series against the best team.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
In the conference, you're just a few tweaks away, Like.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
For example, you know what got my attention last offseason
more than anything else outside of Rockets Land. I mean,
but when the thunder obtained Alex Caruso, like I knew
okay ooh, I don't like that that made them better.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
And I hated to admit it because I think he's
a you know, but he's good. The Rockets could use him.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
They have players like that, but every team could use
a player like that. I adding Isaiah Hertstein was equally
helpful to them and turned out to be very helpful
during the regular See.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
Those moves are not bam look big flash over here
type moves. That's the kind of moves I'm talking about
Minnesota has to make. You need to find your your
fabric is already there. You need to find complimentary pieces,
and you know, maybe that means removing some pieces. I
don't know if if yeah, I don't know who. I
don't know who that would be. And the problem with
(32:43):
doing that is inevitably you have to give somebody up.
You know, the Thunder had to give up Josh Giddy
and I know that sounds ridiculous, but he was a
good contributor for their team that was very good last year.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
But you take out Josh Giddy and you put in Caruso.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
That's like I said. That got my tension in the offseason.
I was like, man, that's the kind of sneaky move.
And I know it's easy to say that now, but
I really, I, honest to goodness, thought this before they
ever played a game here in twenty twenty four to
twenty five.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
Timothy Shallomey did not help the Thunder win.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
No, he did not.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
They added a player that helps him win. Phenomenal trade,
phenomenal acquisition for the Oklahoma City Thunder. We'll see if
it ends tonight. We'll see what the finals matchups obviously
turn out to be in We're getting that much closer
to all right with the tenth pick and with their
opportunity this offseason free agency is barely over a month away.
(33:35):
In the NBA one final segment here, we'll turn things
over to the Crawford box cast live on location over
at Carbach Brewing here on the eight Team.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety Catus.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
Final segment of the eight Team here on Sports sox
y from live out at Carbach Brewery. Got the Astros
Crawford box cast right around the corner there he is,
that's Ross Viial. He's now in the building as well,
so he and Chris Gordy will be taking you on
a magical mystery ride covering all things Astros on the
(34:18):
Crawford box cast that is right around the corner. In
the meantime, Wex and I out here since a five
to three Astros come from behind victory over the mighty
West Sacramento Athletics.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Yeah, a couple of early spots where Lance mccullor's got
into trouble. Three of the first four hits he allowed
where doubles. Jack Wilson's kid Jacob hit a home run
gave them a three to two lead. But six innings
nasty stuff, twelve strikeouts, only one walk, and just those
five hits allowed gave the Astros a chance to win.
(34:51):
His best to me best effort of the season because
he pitched deep into the game. It's something that they're
gonna have to have for many, many reasons. The injuries
to Renel Blanco, Spence Araghedty and Hayden was Nesci are
among the biggest reasons. And so that was a huge
help for this team today. Still four more days of
consecutive games to be played as they round out the
ten game homestand with the Raised in town and then
(35:13):
comeback came against the A's bullpen. There bullpen stinks. Mason
Miller is good, but he doesn't often pitch when they
aren't winning and hasn't been quite as good as he
was last year. Still as of tremendous stuff, but they
didn't see him this series because they blow him out
yesterday with the eleven to one win, and they took
the lead in the seventh inning with the three spot.
Zach Decenzo let off the inning. It's terrible, sterner. Tell
(35:34):
me if you've heard that before. And then two more
runs came home on Victor Carrattini's bases loaded to out
single at scored a pair. There's your five to three advantage.
Dubin has been exceptional this season. Turned it over to
Abra in the eighth, turned it over to Hater in
the ninth, and while a Bray who continues to struggle
(35:54):
with early inning walks, it's not always the first batter,
but usually one of the first two batters. He's the
only one of their four leverage relievers it's really had
an issue with throwing strikes. You know. Steven Okert, Brian King,
Josh Hater and a Brew overall this season have all
been incredible, but Brian Obrew is the one that has
(36:17):
struggled to throw strikes early in an inning. King's thrown
twenty three and two thirds, he's walked six, Hater's thrown
twenty four, He's walked six. Okert's thrown twenty four point
two he's walked three, and Brian obralew In twenty four
and two thirds has walked fourteen batters. That's way too many.
It's a major concern. He's pitched himself out of trouble.
(36:42):
All four of those pitchers one eighty two, ARA one
eighty two, AAR one fifty two, ARA one fifty ear
they've all been incredible this year. He's put himself in trouble,
he's pitched himself out of it as long as he's
not pitching against Seattle, and Seattle's the only team that
scored on him this year.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
Since we're talking about this, and I know you brought
it up earlier in the show for like a split second,
how many walks did the Lance mccullors have today?
Speaker 2 (37:06):
Yeah, just one against those twelve strikeouts. Pitch count was
awesome through the first two innings. He didn't have really
any innings that were as bad as most of the
innings that preceded this start. It's a major step forward
in my opinion, and I actually think I sold him
short and took credit away from him earlier today in
talking about the free swinging A's the stuff was so
(37:26):
nasty that might have happened against any team. The pitches
that looked like strikes all the way up until they're
about five feet away from home plate, Well, that's why
teams swam at them. That's why they go back to
the dugout shaking their heads. He had Lawrence Butler tight
a knots Soderstrom against both a brayw and mccullors throughout
the afternoon, just pitches that were not in the zone,
(37:47):
but they sure looked like they were gonna be. The
amount of movement on Lance's pitches has been there all season,
all of his starts, tremendous movement. These caught enough of
the early strike zone upon release that the age just
couldn't stay off of it. If you are a starting
pitcher and you get eighteen swings and misses, your stuff
was great that day. Whether it's just you've got pure heat,
(38:09):
or you've got movement on your pitches, or you've got deception.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
He was awesome today and most importantly of all, before
we let you go, the Bushwhackers were indeed known as
the sheep herders.
Speaker 4 (38:20):
I stand correct.
Speaker 2 (38:20):
I thought that was true.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
At least three people reach out on the socials to
say that, So congratulations on your better than I thought
knowledge of pro wrestling.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
That was my very brief era of knowing about wrestling.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
Did you In addition to the to the hand, do
you know what?
Speaker 3 (38:37):
They were also known for their signature licking each other's
faces and the faces of fans in the crowd.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
And I did not know that, man. I didn't think
they were known for their interviews.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
Well, if you put in Bushwhackers into the gift search
on Twitter X whatever you want to call it.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
I'll call it X because that's what it's called.
Speaker 4 (38:57):
You'll get Yah, it's still people still call it Twitter.
You'll get it.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
At least one example of them licking someone's face lots
of times, the same person.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
At the same time.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Quite a trend to set.
Speaker 4 (39:07):
It really was. It was a better time the late
eighties and early nineties. All Right, that is gonna do
it for us. We are gonna step aside.
Speaker 3 (39:14):
But don't you go anywhere the Crawford Box Cast right
around the corner with Chris Gordy with Ross vi Real
all things Astros following their sweep of the Oakland A's
over the past two games, and a whole lot more
right here on your home for Astros Baseball Sports Talks
seven ninety. We will be back in studio tomorrow afternoon
at two o'clock
