A team, but it kinda is becoming that way. You
guys know, if you've listened for any amount of time
to WEX and myself as we welcome you into a
Thursday edition of the program alongside Josh Jordan, you know
when I get irritated about certain aspects of the sports calendar,
and we're at one of those. I'm just I know

that Lance McCullers Junior was traded yesterday. We'll get to
some more reaction from him on that and some of
the financials and all that kind of stuff, but we
are at that point. We're at that tipping point, and
it's not gonna get any better tomorrow either.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
It's not.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
The Astros will play tomorrow night and we'll be back
on the schedule, and it's not gonna matter because the
game won't happen until after the show. The reason I
bring all this up is I don't know if I'm
gonna survive next summer.

I can't do this every single day, like I can't
have COVID schedule from late March, well really February after
the Super Bowl. I mean, the Rockets will be there.
I can't do that until the end of September when
football season's here.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
I can't do that. Why don't you just wait and
not think about it today when it doesn't matter? Because
today's like today and tomorrow remind me of what it
be like. We're totally fine. Yeah, they and tomorrow are
also going to be totally fine. I don't know about that.
I mean the two shows without you this week, they're
totally fine. You've done one show this week too. I've

been on vacation for an entire week, came back Tuesday,
your second day. Oh, you're third day back. You're already
complaining about the twenty twenty seven lack of a baseball season.

Why because I know that every day I got it then,
not now I have to see the freight train coming
our way. You do too, everybody does.

It doesn't bother me today in the middle of July
of twenty twenty six.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well, it bothers me today because this day is going
to be like all of those days. In fact, we
have more to talk about baseball wise today, just on average,
than we ever will next summer.

Realize that, of course, what are you going to do
with yourself? I didn't say I was looking forward to it,
but today's not that day. It all right?

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Fine, So Lance Peccullers Junior has finally, uh publicly reacted
to the trade, and he's saying all the right things.
He's talking about what a great organization this was while
he was here for his entire adult life, and he's basically,
you know, grown up here, for lack of a better
way of putting in, I'm paraphrasing, He's had two kids, married,

(02:28):
all that kind of stuff, and he looks forward to
uh helping good things happen for another fantastic organization in
the Millionwaukee Brewers.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
He's saying all the right things because he means them. Yeah,
I agree. Yeah, it's very easy to say the right
things when that's literally how either the trade played out
from his perspective or his meeting, his thoughts on the city,
the community, everything else. You know, fourteen plus years as
a member of this organization. Technically when he was drafted,
not necessarily when he was signed, but you know, drafted

(02:58):
in June of twenty twelve. It's July of twenty twenty six,
and it's the only franchise he's ever known, the only
job he's ever had. That's usually the case for major
League Baseball players when they move on, not necessarily for
the guy he got traded with. Colton Gordon has also
been a pizza delivery guy, but for Lance, baseball is
the only job he has had and he continues to

(03:19):
do that. We'll see if the Brewers insert him into
their rotation. They would have to activate him, but they
have the means to do so. Colton Gordon probably starts
his Milwaukee Brewers career in the minor leagues as he
was here, probably with Nashville for them to get things started.
But they have enough pitching problems that they have made
some moves in addition to this one to try to

(03:41):
accommodate for that over the next couple months of the season.
And so from the Astros perspective, clearly it's a deal
that they wanted to make for multiple reasons, most of
which we discussed yesterday, roster wise and financially, and it's
a move that's probably good for Lance mcculler's junior. He
has to make it good, but it's good for him
on the surface because clearly it's a team in need.

(04:02):
Hard to say what exactly the market was for a
pitcher who was hurt multiple times this year and pitched
unsuccessfully for the most part this year and carried a
very large contract eimed into his final year. We'll hear
from Brian McTaggart on that very subject coming up in
about ninety minutes. He visited with the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross earlier, so we will deliver some of that

(04:24):
interview on Lance mccullors and what's next for both him
and the Astros in the words of Tags, So look
forward to that conversation, really looking forward to the team
being back on the field tomorrow. There is a lot
to discuss. There are moves that are going to be made.
It would be shocking if trading Lance mccullor's junior cash
and Colton Gordon for Jaden Fielder was the last in

season move made by general manager Dana Brown before he
is no longer the general manager of the Houston Astros.
That would be an absolute shocking turn of events. Whether
they become sellers or buyers, I assume is up for
a little bit more debate until we get two more
weeks worth of games underneath our belts and their belts.
But this is a precursor this is, well, now we

(05:08):
need to get other players on the roster. We know
that's coming internally, but if they want to be better
than a four games under five hundred team, then they
need to get other other players on the roster, both
most likely.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Well, it's funny because you were talking about you were very,
very surefire about the fact that the reason they were
making this move was to get more pitching. And while
I think that's absolutely what they should do, what if
we talked about all season long, when we would mention
guys like Lance McCullers trying to come back, and Renel

Blanco and Hayden was Nesky and all you know names
like that Christian Haavier that you know either didn't start
the season healthy or they have since departed or whatever
their case was. In any given scenario, when all these
guys are healthy, where are they going to pitch all
of them? They just got rid of two of them,
I know, but a lot easier. Yes, but that's to me,

(06:02):
you go out and get another guy. Now you're obviously
going out and trading for a guy to put into
the rotation. I'm just wondering who the odd man or
men would be.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Out so Spencer, Araghedtty, Hunter Brown, Peter Lambert, tatsu Im
that's four.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Yeah, but you're gonna put Christian Javier back out there,
are you not?

Speaker 2 (06:23):
That's five?

Speaker 1 (06:24):
And by the way, I'm saying Javier and I'm saying
Araghetty and neither one of them.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
I mean, what the hell happened? What do you what
do you need me here for? You just answered your
own question.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Well, whoever they go out and get that's gonna be
another name, right.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
And with your unintentional Ron Burgundy like commentary on both
Javier and Spencer Aarraghetty, doesn't that mean you're adding a
picture that you're more confident in and thus they would
slot ahead of both of them.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
But okay, if I will give you that, I'll grant
you that, if you'll finish this question, which one's going
to sugar Land? And if you say Arraghetty or whoever
you name that's not Emi, well my question would be
like why not?

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Because they can ask him to and he can decline
and then they're kind of stuck. It'd be kind of selfish,
but it'd also be a little bit of pride involved.
He would have to agree to any move to send
him down. They have the option to do it, but
he has to agree to it. That's based on his
specific contract. Yes, okay, I did not know that's Arraghedty
has options, which they've already used one of earlier this year,

(07:31):
so those would be options for them on how to
put it all together. Plus you're waiting to see if
everybody stays healthy. Mike Burrows is probably going to be
physically ready to pitch if everything goes well with him
returning from his elbow injury sometime. I would imagine mid August,
maybe late August, because he's obviously not going to pick
up a baseball for another seven to ten days per
Dana Brown yesterday, which means that's about two and a

(07:53):
half weeks without throwing. Got to ramp him up at
least a little bit, even if you intend to bring
him back or use him as a reliever moving forward.
They indicated they wanted to use him as a starter
at Triple A, and I don't blame him, but this
could potentially short term change their plans, and that really
applies to everybody, even Lance McCullers junior. If in fact
he wasn't moved. It's a matter of getting the best
arms up here. Aj Bluebaugh is a great example of that.

(08:15):
Aj bluebaw might be the fifth best starter on the
Astros forty man roster, but at the time they put
together a starting rotation, he wasn't in that group, and
so they turned him into a reliever for the first
time in his career, basically, and he has shown to
be a very valuable part of this pitching staff and
that could be a role that somebody else might be
able to take on for the remainder of this season.

(08:37):
Hard to do in season, flipping a guy back and forth.
They did it with Kaiwai Dung obviously this year, and
even the Giants had done that over the course of
his time there a little bit, not a huge fan
of it, but sometimes that's what the baseball season calls for.
And if you believe the pitcher's arm is resilient enough
to do it in season, then you do it. Or
if that's just what it has to happen, then that's

(08:57):
what you do. And so those options are all so
still availab well, there's not that they have a limited
number of options, and it wouldn't Also, the other thing
that wouldn't surprise me is more players off of the
current active roster, and technically there's only twenty five guys
on it with the no corresponding move to Oli Barsonta.
Yet they could move another player pitcher or two off

(09:20):
of the major league roster. I mean, presumably replacing him
with a similar if you're training a pitcher, I imagine
they're bringing back a pitcher. But you know, Brian Abrad
expiring contract, pitching poorly, the kind of stuff that's tantalizing,
the kind of picture the Astros would love to have
for the remainder of the season if it was Brian
Abra you pre twenty twenty six. Guarantee you there's fifteen

(09:42):
other gms that think the same thing. I absolutely think
that is a possibility that he is a player they
could move here before the deadline.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
By the way, you mentioned Alan Barsanta. I hate the
fact that he's not on the major league roster at
any point.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Well. The also the timing of the move and the
days in between games would also allow him for a
rather quick return.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
No, I know, I just think that he showed so
and again it's a lot like guy I get. I
do get loyal to pitchers for the Astros. Very quickly.
Somewhere in there, Spencer Righetti is going to be unlocked again.
I have no doubt about it, even though every time
he starts lately it's like, what in the world is
happening right now? I still feel the same way about

Christian Hoveer.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
I feel worse about Hobby personally, but both are in
the same boat that has holes in it with no bucket,
no whatever it is that you pull off the tape
roll and you slap it on there and it keeps
the water from going through the glass boat you've drilled
holes into. Make sure? Yes, what's it called flex feel?
It's flex seel.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Well, who was the guy? Was it Billy or the
other guy? Billy the guy with a beard? I can't
he was. Well, there was one blonde guy with the ponytail,
and then there was a guy with a beard.

I mean, these may be the most prominent yelling sales
pitch guys correct, But Billy's not with us anymore, and
Slap Chop guy doesn't get work anymore. Flex Seal guy
still promotes his product. Is he the guy with a beard?

What took him? Heart attack? I dipertension, recall yelling. Don't
know he died an unfortunate yelling accident. All right, So
all of this and more is fair game. I did
go out of my way to say that Lance mccullor's
junior was saying all the right things for a reason.
I mean, obviously it's true, but there's another athlete in

Houston who's doing the exact opposite right now. And I
let one slide, I'm not gonna let two slide. So
we'll definitely call that guy out. We'll get to more
list radio, because that's what we do. On July sixteenth,
the day after the Stupid SP's air, we'll talk about
the Stupid SP's and even though the Astros are still
in a division race, there might be another race that's

going to be a little bit more compelling if you
ask me, and maybe if you ask Wex, you'd have
to ask him all of that and so much more
on a Thursday edition of the program.

Do you ever been to South Carolina? Wex just kind
of bumped around thinking about this the other day, and
I didn't have a real good answer for it. My
number is probably a little bit higher than my son's,
but he was working on something that indicated he has
personally been to thirty two states. Oh, it's a good one.
My number is probably a little bit higher than that.
But I don't think I've quite gotten to the forties.

And yes, I've been to South Carolina. Clemson. Uh No,
I don't think Clemson. What's a I think I've been there,
and you got to help me out with what city

What's the difference between Death Valley and Death Valley? That's

One of them is in the sea. Wait a minute,
it's like no one's in the SEC. Ones in the
A could work that out. One is a very story.
I mean, which valley is deadlier? Clemson had some good
years long before Dabbo got there, but not with anywhere
near this level of success or this level of continued success.

So Death Valley being associated with the Tigers who have
had much more of that, and certainly maybe right before
Brian Kelly got there, they were in it for an
even longer period of time and with even more success.
I mean I hear Death Valley. I certainly don't think
of the state of South Carolina.

And the funny part about that is they're still chasing
the glory of the Deshaun years.

Major League Baseball returns tonight's game tonight, so we are
it's all good. One of the majors, and golf is
taking place. We have our matchup set for the World
Cup Final coming on Sunday. Got Major League Baseball today
and the NBA. Still nobody makes more offseason news than
the NBA, besides the NFL in Major League Baseball, but

they have some of that for us too. Well.

It is the worst week on the sports count.

One more regularly scheduled summer league game for the Rockets
and we're barely over an hour away from tip off.
That's also like World cun They've got a sport one
more game coming up after that, and then maybe another

Semis about Bruce Thornton averaging twenty one points per game
aout it we should care why that's like saying, hey
man read chepperd dropped forty five last night in Summer
League action.

Well, I do have a similar slant on summer League
and that you guys got to you know, ranking to
go though I've been there and it's pretty awesome for
me to go. It's phenomenal for fans, first of all,
like you, you you are close to NBA fans if
you're spending big money or going early to games and
standing in the tunnels or having seats on the court
in Vegas is different. Players are everywhere the games, playing everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, everywhere,

and you will see them and you'll be players balking
to them. You can, you know, try to get a
selfie with them when they're ignoring you, or maybe they're
not ignoring you.

Speaker 1 (15:05):
All that they are everywhere, you can take a selfie
of them ignoring you.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
They might even take the phone from you, so it's
an even better selfie from seven feet in the air.
It's a good time in the games. You certainly get
to see the future, and for some teams, their future
is actually there. The first round draft picks, the lottery
picks from this year, and a few others like Bruce
Thornton and you don't want to see those guys. Yeah,
there's more to it than just crapping on it for
what it is. But what it is is a handful

of really talented players playing against a much larger handful
of non NBA players. That's what Summer League is. Most
of the players that are you were going to watch
are not going to be in the NBA, and they're not.
Some of them aren't even G League caliber players. Most
of them are. But that's what We're not telling you
to go to to Rio Grande Valley or some other where.
Did they Fort Stockton or Stockton, California? I think is

where the Lakers outfit is moving the valley, whatever it is.
We're not telling you to go there. But that's the
quality of talent you're going to see outside of like
twenty guys. Do you have one of those twenty guys?
The Rockets probably don't have one of those twenty guys,
but they have someone who's doing the things that make
you say, with the thirty first pick in the draft,
they probably got someone that makes sense. Can he help

the team? Is he a part of their future? We're
way away from kind of listen to that point.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
I do think there's something to this as it pertains
to the Rockets. Agreer disagree. Raffel Stone was high on
Reed Shepherd, very high, and you could also say the
organization was in that regard, meaning when he drafted him,
they had to sign off on it, all that kind
of stuff. But as his first few seasons progressed, would

(16:43):
you also agree that maybe rafel Stone and other elements
of the organization probably higher on him than say em Udoka,
based if nothing else upon his lack of playing time
at times?

Speaker 2 (16:57):
Is that also fair to say? Well, in year one
I think that he could have been with the team
more and maybe had earned some more playing time. But
with who was healthy and on the roster that year,
it was a Fred.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
So I say all that to say this, the team
got way way better and Reid's first year, yeah, so
the ability to play him because you were a twenty
six or twenty eight win team kind of went out
the window.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
Right, Okay, But I say all this for a very
you know, salient point here. If you start seeing Bruce Thornton,
make it, you know, glogging considerable for him, I guess
minutes in year one that's kind of a tell.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
For e may like you mean over reed Shepherd. Well, no,
not even that. I'm just cause he gonna earn meaningful
minutes without injury. Well that's again, why did you draft
him then I would earn meaningful minutes. Well, I can't
have a full roster of rotation players. So why that
position then, is my question? Because he is the best

(17:57):
player on the board, and he fits what you do,
gives you flexibility if you decide to go in another
direction with somebody. I mean, Fred did scrub his his
IG profile?

Speaker 3 (18:06):
Did he not?

Speaker 2 (18:06):
So he could still be traded. I mean there's a
lot of reasons for James. You only have five spots
on the court, and you only have ten or eleven
players that make a huge difference to your product at
different points during the year. Players twelve through seventeen might
play a role, and that's where he is. He's by
the way, he's shooting better and scoring more than Reid
did when he was a rookie in summer league. Listen,
if he doesn't mean anything, I'm giving that information out.

(18:29):
But you're barely setting in this case. That's fair. Yeah,
I don't. I'm not here to look at Reed Shepherd
and say, man, this guy stinks like there are things
that he can do really well. The problem is there
are the other things that have to go well or
he's hard to play. And I don't think the Rockets
maybe thought it would be quite that way, that he
becomes very hard to play. And that's why what Rafell

(18:53):
told the TV crew when he was doing an in
game interview. And we've seen Reid a I appreciate him
wreckingizing how young he looks. So he's let his hair
go and it has facial hair now. But what Rafel said,
which I think is it's not that easy to see.
We've seen enough video and pictures of Reed at summer League.
He's definitely going to be a bigger player. And he
also has several more months to continue to become a

(19:15):
bigger player. Like pounds of muscles. I don't know what
the number would be, and I don't know what he
wants to be cole playing with. Well, he's so much smaller,
you know. Grayson Allen. Grayson Allen came into the league
color player, but a thin, typical college basketball player. And
then the off season where we go, who is this right?

(19:35):
What is he doing? Can he even play at this
enormously bloated weight And he could. He still does some
of the things he used to do, and I don't
think Reid's headed anywhere in that direction. It becomes unbelievably noticeable.
And for a player like Reid, I don't think it
makes a whole lot of sense to go crazy. But
he has to be able to push guys off their
spot when they go post him up. He has to
be able to move his feet, get in front of

guys and not get knocked over when they just put
an army to his chest. And that's I'm sure what
the gist of the weight gain and strength is for
this upcoming season.

something that would annually be on where nothing else is.
So I imagine a lot of people always watch. I
hope that the writers are good, especially when a comedian
is there. They had a comedian hosting last night. Shane Gillis,

a comedian has hosted before. Norm you mentioned hosted just
a couple of years ago. A lot of times it's
athletes or other prominent celebrities. So the writing needs to
be that much better because the monologue often is is
what everyone takes out of.

It, except for this year, when what everyone took out
of it is that the banana whatever they're called Bana
really uncomfortable.

I still haven't watched it, so it is no consequence
to me. I don't watch the sps for how they
for the production value of the show, and I also
don't watch it for who wins, because it doesn't these
I respect them for having the event. It's cool and
I love the actual good feeling get your tears going awards,
whether it's an Arthur ash Award or what they did
with Unfortunately, this year the recipient was someone who was

sent to save and help as many of the campers
at camp missed it during the floods right here in Texas,
and obviously that's very sad. Jim Abbott bringing the award
home last night, introduced by Justin Verlander, and then he
gave an awesome speech. They kind of surrounded his the
Perseverance Award for you know, they featured as no hitter,

but they also got to other people who have performed
at an exceptionally high athletic level with out both hands,
like in the NFL, like in the NWSL and elsewhere.
It's a great speech. I love that stuff. I don't
mind crying during those things. But who won Best Player?
Who won Best Moment? College athlete. I mean, it's fun
to watch it because you get to relive it a

little bit and sometimes you get a good beach. And
it was nice of most of the Knicks to be
up there to accept their several awards. And when the
whole team was up there, Karl Anthony Town said, it's
great for us to be here. We appreciate everybody, and
then Jalen Brunston jumped in and said, and we appreciate
the SP's for taking back Josh Hart's invitation because he
wasn't there, and he and Josh obviously have some greatest

NBA unintentional buddy cop dua we've ever seen. That's a
good way to just kept that going well. Ferrell tried,
i think, to recover from his performance at What Did
We Just Have? He was at the home run Derby,
which was awful. He was brought on stage as a
translator for the host. It was funnier than the derby,

but still probably didn't hit its mark.

Sometimes I like to watch the Anchorman movies to remember
the time when he was funny.

He's funny in his movies and his outtakes are insane,
all of them. For all of his movies, but when
he's kind of doing this, even when he hosts Cess
and l Now it's just not that funny. Now he's
lost his fastball.

It happens to a lot of people, all right, Speaking
of exceptional athletes who do do things very well with
both hands, there's no better way to describe Mike Tyson
than that, right, Well, he gave out an award last night.

I think he was up there with Jake Paul and
DJ Khaled. He was presenting, presenting. Yes, he had a
couple of other spots where he was. He did something
with Jeffrey Ross as well.

Alvarez's out bats this year, he's crushing it, and not
just out of the park, He's doing it every which way.
He's gotten numbers that are insane, and specifically he's got
triple Crown numbers, or at least he's in the market
to have winning the triple Crown type season.

for months. He is at the top of two of
the three thirty one home runs as him atop the
home run ladder closest pursuers a pair of All Stars
Ben Rice and Junior camon Aro. He's at the top

how much time off the field Kurtz is incurring. He
went on the ail just before the All Star break.
Jordon actually just passed him just before the All Star
break for the RBI lead, and he's sitting at seventy
to lead the American League. And he is not first
in average, but the person who's third is Josh Young
and he's hitting well below three hundred. It is probably

a race between just two and that's Yandy Diaz and
Jordon Alvarez. Diaz was also an All Star hitting three
to twin two. Could be a second batting title in
four seasons for Yandy. He's a career two ninety three hitter.
He's hit three hundred or better two of the last
three years. This would make it three of four. So
that is absolutely in all three categories a legit competition.

And even if jord On Alvarez plays one hundred and
forty five one hundred and fifty games, that means he's
going to miss six to ten games this year. If
he plays one hundred and fifty eight or one hundred
and sixty games, then he's barely going to miss any
time the rest of the way. Any couple of days
off or the weekend, or he's got to go on
even that ten day stint, that would make it a

little bit more difficult, certainly in the counting stats. Obviously,
his average would only be impacted if he can't qualify.
That would be a longer term injury, so that would
probably be much more important. And all of it doesn't
matter at all unless the Astros are in the race.
And I know it's a nice individual award, and if
I were a player, I'd certainly be trying to do it,
But it all comes in the context of it only

matters if we're winning only matters if we go to
the playoffs, like jord On Alvarez winning the Triple Crown
in a season the Astros go eighty two to eighty
and miss the playoffs. I don't have much reason sitting
here to beat our chests about first time since Miguel
Cabrera did it twice. Now in the last sixty seasons,
somebody's won the Triple Crown. Way to go. It's more

of a whooped dee. Do I know he's great? It
only hurts you in future contract negotiations now that he
has that little accolade. I guess to go with it,
but it really doesn't matter. We're talking about a guy
who he's great regardless of any individual. It's really a
non award. But he probably wins the MVP regardless if
he wins the Triple Crown or not. It would be awesome.

I'm not trying to downplay it, but man, it would
be nice if it happened when the final two weeks
of his Triple Crown chase coincided with the Astros holding
on to first place finding their way into the playoff picture.
If they were outside the playoff picture, that would be
much better than continue on the current path.

Well, that's my question. Which one of these is more
likely to happen? And I think both of them will
be unfortunately, very difficult to achieve.

I don't think the triple crown is difficult to achieve it.
If he's healthy, he's gonna win two of them. He's
gonna win the home run chase, and he's gonna win
the RBI title, I think, and Nick Kurt's being hurt
is helpful because Kurts have been ahead of him for

How many games can you miss before you don't qualify?

It's more about the played appearances, but I think it's
three point one per team game played or something.

So there's sixty five games, that's correct. There is not
NBA I guess parallel, But I honestly, even though the
answer should be the division, I think this is still
going to be more difficult because of that aforementioned batting average.

That's the one category he doesn't lead. Yeah, but it's yeah,
a couple three, four, six games ago he was out
of the as how he's not, and he's been chasing him,
and then he passed him and then he came back down.

little shocked if the Astros won the division this year
because it sucks that much, not because they're so good.

I mean, Alvarez at three to eighteen is a two

feel like it could easily be determined on the final

the season for the twenty twenty seven season, should they
play one hundred and sixty two games. Major League Baseball
released the twenty twenty seventh schedule, so a little bit
of our afternoon we'll spend on that. I will only

the hour. The Astros open the season just like every

other team in baseball, all fifteen games. All thirty teams
will open the season on Thursday, March twenty fifth, so
should be what I think a lot of people used
to be used to having everybody have opening Day together.
Astros will host currently the first place Rangers, so the
first game of next year's Silver Boot Series will be

the first of three games to open up the season.
The Rangers will be in Houston to open up the
year that evening, Seattle will be at home. The Dodgers
will be playing Atlanta at home. But I bring up
the opening weekend only because of the odds scheduling that
they seem to like to do the last couple years.
This year will be no different. After opening the season
with the Rangers on Thursday, they will have a game

on Friday, only five games on Friday, fifteen games. Everybody
plays on Thursday, then twenty teams take the day off
on Friday. The Astros are not one of them. They
get their day off on Sunday. The only Sunday of
the entire season they are not scheduled to play a
game is the opening weekend of the season. They're one

of six teams who open their season Thursday and have
Sunday off, so their first off day of the season
is what would normally be scheduled is the fourth game
of a series that starts on Thursday. Instead, in this case,
they will have a day off and be done with
the Rangers for that particular series, awaiting Series number two,
which like this year, brings the Boston Red Sox sound.

There will be the second home opponent during the opening
homestand just as they were this year, and a lot
of the other scheduling points are similar to last year.
If need be, we can run through some of what's
interesting about it for the upcoming season. We certainly can't
do that if we had opened the show. I'm glad
that information didn't come until later in the afternoon because
we all know. According to AC, there will be no

baseball in twenty twenty seven. Call on it, but they're
preparing for it like there will be. They have announced
these are the games we intend to play, even with
the CBA set to expire on December first. That's our

but a look the American League teams, who's buying, who's selling?

an hour on how things kind of unfolded and where
things are with Lance's health and where things are with
the Astros moving out of this deal. I talked a
little bit about the coming conclusion of NBA Summer League.
Rockets will play their last regularly scheduled game in about
half an hour or so, and then whatever games remain
after that. If they do reach the semifinals, was still
a possibility, that could mean they have two games remaining.

Otherwise that will likely have just the one game remaining
definitively if they don't reach the semis by virtue of
what the result today. So a little bit of conversation
about Bruce Thornton. The last of the lists we have
been so unfortunately tied to from NFL executives personnel types
that have been delivered to us via Jeremy Fowler, was

released today, So an overall look at the Texans. The
last of those lists was the Safeties, and it shined
brightly on the Houston Texans as you would expect. So
we will also look through that and kind of give
a bigger picture of what maybe it tells you. One thing,
it tells you something you already know, and one other
way it tells you something you might be surprised by

when you give an overall look at this list, which
hits every single position group. Do that, and as we
teased Major League Baseball, we'll be back underwagh in about
three hours. One game today over the National League, and
then everybody back on schedule, including the Astros and Orioles
tomorrow over at Dyke and Park. Two series to open
up the second part of the season at home for Houston,

(41:56):
a team that is doing what the Astros are doing,
wondering what they should be moving forward and hoping to
truly be back in the race. The Orioles and then
the Marlins will be in town. The Marlins just got
finished sweeping the Mariners last week in Miami. Much better
team at home, and the Mariners not a particularly good
team anywhere. They're very average like Houston, but a much

(42:18):
better team than I think many people expected the Marlins
to be this year. Over the last month or so,
they've been the best team in the National League, so
that probably is a little bit bigger test and questions
about how the Astros will roll out their rotation very interesting.
We heard from Dana Brown a little bit yesterday. He
said Renel Blanco should be back in a week or so.

(42:38):
The way he said it, and my own personal thoughts
along with what everybody else thinks, is he was just
trying not to announce that he will be in the
rotation when they come out of the All Star Break.
I'm sure that's something that they will get to when
they have to, just like they did when Christian Xavier
made the Sunday start. They didn't have to say anything
about it. They really didn't even have to on Saturday
night after their second e last game before the break,

(43:00):
but they did. Christian Javier will be our starter tomorrow
and they might do the very same thing with Renelle,
but clearly in his case a move has to be made.
He's not on the forty man roster yet because he's
on the sixty day IL. They did up and up
two spots on the forty man roster with the trade yesterday.
Jaden Fielder will not be on the forty man roster
as an a ball player, but both Colton Gordon and

(43:22):
Lance mccullors Junior were doesn't tell us anything more or
less about the Astros' intentions. They appear to be ready
to make more moves. That's what this should indicate, and
the finances behind it should also indicate that. But they
have two more weeks of baseball until the actual deadline,

(43:43):
could they play their way into thinking differently? Clearly, if
they win, that should make it definitive for them. If
the Astros are winning, if the Astros have gotten back
to five hundred before the deadline, then they're probably going
to go further into trying to make this magic happen.
And conversely, if they have a tough time with the
Oriols and Marlins and the other teams that they have
set to play before we say get to August first

(44:06):
and the three days that remain before the third deadline,
they might say, Look, we're already trending in the wrong
direction for a third consecutive season. We're set to miss
the playoffs for a second consecutive season. We're looking at
the end of our control over Jeremy Panna and Hunter
Brown in the very near future. Should we go ahead
and speed that up, even though we have a lot

(44:29):
of money tied to a few other players that we're
not gonna move. So we'll see what happens between now
and then. But it's a question many teams in the
American League still don't have the answer to for themselves.

Speaker 1 (44:39):
Well, you bring up probably the only aspect of the
trade scenario or making a deal scenario that we haven't
talked about, and that is the fact that Okay, that's true,
they can play themselves into I guess maybe a different
decision question is are they going to wait that long
to find out? Because if you're starting right now now

versus two weeks from now when the deadline actually happens,
I mean you're I think they're probably in buy mode, but.

Speaker 2 (45:10):
That two weeks.

Speaker 1 (45:11):
Can absolutely determine a lot, especially in a very tight race,
not just in the AO West, but in the American League.
Like we're gonna talk about an article ESPN wrote where
there are tiers to championship or you know, basically tiers
to major league teams. The top tier has four teams.
Only one of those is in the American League, and
that's the race. They don't even have the Yankees up

(45:35):
in the upper tier at this point, which they shouldn't
by the way, especially with the uncertainty around Aaron Judge.
But it's like so much can happen, so much really
is up for grabs, and that's never more sure as
it is with the space the sport of baseball. I mean,
you talk about it all the time, how the best
teams normally win, definitely in the NBA, a lot of
times in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (45:56):
It's just such a.

Speaker 1 (45:56):
Crapshoot major League Baseball, and this is another aspect of that.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
So you want them to wait and see what happens.
Do you want them to just get after it and
try to beat teams to the trades and be buyers.

That last part, because it's not just about that they're
in a better position now than maybe they could be
in two weeks. But it's also about that part, right
there is honestly more of the driving factor. If I'm
running the Astros, beat out some of these other teams,
and if they don't like your offer, which I think
is going to be the Astro's biggest issue in a
lot of cases, well that's fine, but at least you

(46:26):
did beat another team to the punch, like Seattle for example, Yeah,
I mean, I.

Speaker 2 (46:31):
Don't, really, I don't. Seattle is only a team that
can beat the Astros to the punch because they're loaded.
They have a fantastic group of prospects. If they are
inclined to go and get something great, they have the
means to do it. Not every team does. The Astros
do not, even with the two top prospects that they
have who they are not going to be moving, the
Mariners could decide to because then they just have another

(46:54):
two prospects to consider. Now they've brought some of them
up over the late last year and now the beginning
of this year, and whether they pan out, you never know.
That's true with all non major league Baseball players before
they arrive. Interesting in all that that, another player from
the twenty twenty four first round got a big, fat extension.
The Reds agreed to one hundred and five million dollar

(47:15):
extension with lots of arbitration years left on Chase Burns.
He's the third first round pick to get a big deal.
Connor Griffin got one, Weatherholt got one earlier this year.
Cam Smith is part of that first round. We'll get
into that conversation a little bit later, but the Astros.
Tier two includes the Yankees and the Cubs and the
Phillies and the Mariners, so still not the Astros were

(47:37):
eight teams in Tier three is the Guardians, the White Sox,
the Marlins, the Pirates, the Cardinals, the Nationals. The Astros
aren't in Tier three either, nor should they be. The
modeled American League brings Tier four with the Rangers and
Red Sox. Rangers are leading the division. Red Sox are
the hottest team in baseball and have had unbelievable pitching.

(47:59):
Minnesota Twins another team that is ahead of Houston. They
finished the pre All Star Break portion of their schedule
just a game under five hundred, and they won the
season series against Houston. Houston is a game and a
half behind them, and that's where the Astros drop in
Tier four, considered a team essentially not different from the Rangers,

(48:20):
the Red Sox and the Twins, the Tigers and the
Orioles and the Blue Jays. All of those teams except
the team that stayed over five hundred by beating the
Astros in the last series before the All Star Break
is under five hundred's I.

Speaker 1 (48:37):
Mean, I've never I don't remember seeing anything like this,
do you no?

Speaker 2 (48:42):
But the thing is only one of them is going
to the playoffs, right, No? I know the Rays and
Yankees will go to the playoffs. The division winner in
the Central will go to the playoffs, and the division
winner in this division will go to the playoffs. But
since they already said Seattle was in Tier three, I
assuming I think that's them. So of all these teams
that we just mentioned, I said one, it's actually two.

(49:05):
Two wild card spots essentially would be available for those
eight teams because four spots would be taken. The Guardians
have fifty one wins, the Astros have forty seven, Mariners
have more, twins have more. Red Sox have more, again
by one or two.

Speaker 1 (49:22):
The stupidest, slash awesomest thing about this is that one
of those lackeys as you would refer to them, going
into the postseason, could absolutely get hot and win the
whole thing.

Speaker 2 (49:31):
That's how basicaly pitching can get hot. And that's what's
troubling the Astros, right they don't have it. They don't
have the starting pitching. It's exactly what's happened with the
Red Sox. Red Sox were flailing their way through the
season among the worst offenses in the American League, and
as we hit the break, not only ours, but the
All Star Break, they're the lowest scoring team in the

(49:51):
American League. Nobody in the American League scored fewer runs
than the Red Sox and they've won nine consecutive games,
and no team in the American League has given up
fewer runs than the Red Sox, and they've shot past
five teams, including Houston. And it's because of their starting pitching.
They didn't score it all this year, that includes during

(50:11):
this streak. What changed the other team can't score anymore,
and so it's win win after win after win. The
Astros do not did not have a starting pitching staff
capable of pitching them into that we're about to put
together a huge winning streak or a long fourteen out
of sixteen. It's preventing them from truly doing something that
is worthwhile and suggests they could do something of value

in the playoffs.

No, I've got two weeks or so to change that,
So we'll see how soon or not, or if at all,
they decide to do that. I think they will do something.
It's just a matter of what it will be and
what they can do. Obviously, goes a long ways towards

he's coming back. He's got X amount of dollars for

because he's clearly referencing his contract and he's happy. It

Blanco's coming back probably sooner than later. So they basically
just didn't have a spot from the rotation, and so
and then they started to poke around.

With trades a little bit.

The Astros thought that they could trade him, get some
money back, create a little bit of a payroll flexibility.

They can use the trade deadline.

And then so a few teams had an interest, but
Milwaukee seemed to be the best fit. Lance of court
no trade clause, he signed off on going to Milwaukee.
Some other teams were still in it at that point,
but it became clear on late Tuesday, I think Tuesday
night after the All Star Game, it was going to
be the Brewers and then it was finished on Wednesday.

I know that you had a chance to speak to Lance.
Where is he body wise? Can he get to Milwaukee
and pitch right away? Where is he in his process?

for the last time and he was actually at dik

kind of sad. But uh, he's going to Milwaukee today.

ready to go. He was hoping he could have pitched
for the Astros on Sunday, the last game before the
All Star break that the Tavier started. So you know
their dire need of pitching. They have a lot of injuries.
You know, Mizarowski had armed fatigue. Not sure if you
know if he's going to come back. Woodruff is injured,
so he's going to get an opportunity there and to
show what he can do. And uh, you know, Lance,

you never know. He could go out there pitch seven innings,
strike out twelve guys, or pitch two and a third
and not you know, not not give you much.

So it'll be interesting for sure.

Yeah, just your thoughts overall then if you could. Brian
obviously covered him his whole career, getting drafted to come
up the twenty four curve balls and then unfortunately all
the injuries. How you see through your eyes the Lance
mccully's junior as a Houston Astro story.

Yeah, I mean this was a guy taking forty first
overall and what turned out to be a pretty landmark
draft of the Astros because they took kore. Remember they
took Korea a number one overall for less money, and
then they turned around we're able to sign Lance out
of his scholarship at the University of Florida. He was
a pretty hard commit to Florida at that point. And
next thing you know that that draft, the next one

(01:06:57):
and the next one, I mean those sort of got
the frenchise turned around a little bit and and ushered
in like a you know, a decade of dominance. But
Lance was right in the middle of that. I mean,
especially the first part of his Astro's career. I mean
he started some of the biggest games in Astro's history,
Game seven of the World Series. I mean, he didn't
last very long, but you know, he drove in a run.
He started the eighteen inning game in Seattle where they

(01:07:20):
shut out the Marriners, won nothing and got the paying
your home running. He started that game and went six innings,
and of course you mentioned that the twenty four straight
curve balls for scoreless innings to close out the twenty
seventeen ALCS. I mean, you know, this guy, his fingerprints
were all over this Golden era. The second half, you know,
was marred by injuries, and you know he tried to
come back from a couple of major arm surgeries and

really was never the same. But maybe you wish you
would have got a little bit more from Lance where
you drafted him. But if you would have said, hey,
this guy's going to help you win a couple of
World Series, pitching some really big games and just and
just poured it all out.

You know, I think he's done that, and you know,
other than the injuries, I think you should have no
regrets about about the way things went in Houston because

outfield bat is the number one target, and now, of

I mean I think there are people in the organization
that want the outfield bat. I talked to some people
yesterday who say relief pitching is the number one needs.
So and I guess you could make a case for
both of those things. I mean, they do have Bennett
Susa coming back off the Ale soon, and when Blanco
comes back to West Netski comes back, that could push

(01:08:50):
a couple of guys to the bullpen. So you know,
by and large, I think the bullpen has pitched not
terribly for what it's been asked to do here over
the last couple of months. I mean, I think they
need to that left handed bat. The lineup just feels
like way too short. You could really use another guy.
But maybe there's a chance to get both. You know,
I'm not sure they have the prospect capital to do that,
So we'll see. It's going to be really interesting. But

(01:09:12):
I don't see starting pitching. I mean, like I said that,
they're just about to add a couple of guys off
the ion. Starting pitching is so expensive, So either be
a left handed bat or leaf pitcher, maybe both. If
I'm in charge, I'm definitely trying to get that left
handed bat.

The name on the active roster that we've heard about
in traduing conversations really wasn't about Lance.

man roster, because again, for an organization that has just
a couple of top end guys that they want to

Yeah, I mean, you know, do they trade one of
their relief Do they you know, package a reliever in

I think if they're going to make a trade like this,

is it someone that's going to hit hard, like a
you know, one of their top pitching prospects, Peco or

Meyer or guys like that. It might take somebody like
that to get one of these deals done. Yeah, blue
Ball is going to have some interest for sure, but
he's you know, he's also a key.

All those last two outings have been very good just
because he can he can pitch two three innings every
time out and has been a closer in college and
has started for the Astros as well, So he has
some value. But he has some value to the Astros
as well. I think if they're going to make a trade,
they're going to have to give up. They're gonna have
to give up some prospects. And while they don't have
the prospects that a lot of other teams do. To

get a rental on a reliever is not terribly expensive.
I think if you get a rents on an outfield
left handed bat, you know they definitely have the prospects
to do that. I don't anticipate anybody leaving off the
major league roster, not to say it can't be done,
but these teams are gonna want that. They're gonna want

to trade with you, or teams are probably rebuilding a
little bit retooling, and they're gonna want some some young talent.
And blue Ball is that as well. So we'll see
it's it's gonna be a very interesting couple of weeks.

out right now as you're driving around Austin, could make
an impact or could make the most impact between now
and the end of the season, provided they get out
that Angel listen, come and are healthy.

I'll say it's Blanco just because of what he did
in twenty four. That was two years ago, but he
was their best starting pitcher in twenty twenty four. He
had the no hitter that year, but just from start
to finish, I think he led the league in batting
average against.

He was really really good.

Now he is past thirty, I believe. So it's not
like this is a young guy. And you know, the
last couple of years, we've seen guys come back off
Tommy John surgery for the Astros who just haven't got
it done, Luis Garcia, Jose Rakhidi, and even Lance wasn't
the same since he came back. So I get why
there's some trepidation there, But don't sleep on Hayden west Neski.
I heard when he pitched Triple A's last start, I

think he went four in a third inning, struck out seven.

I heard he was absolutely electric.

Speaker 8 (01:13:38):
So they traded for this guy for a reason, and
we really haven't got to see a strong look at
him so far. So if one of those guys could
just step up and become a guy gives you six
innings every time. That's going to be a huge boost.
And if they both do it, all the better. But
Blanco just his track record not too long ago was
really really good. So it looks like soar Or he's

pitched pretty well in in tria A. So I think
he's going to be the first one back. As far
as him and west Nesky the starting pitchers off the io,
maybe as soon as this weekend, I think west Nesky
might be uh, might might make one more rehub start.
But we're gonna find out, uh that both these guys
are gonna come back and join the rotation.

And uh with the the deadline coming up and the
possibility of Dana Brown maybe knowing his job could be
on the line, Brian, do you still expect Alvarez and
Nions to be completely untouchable as far as the prospects?

Yeah, yeah, they're not gonna trade ni ends. I mean
they yeah, there's I think he's he's performed so well
since they drafted him. Uh, you know, he just got
a promotion as well to high A Ball, So the

no chance to trade him. They're not trading Pana, They're
not trading Alvarez. Zero chance that happens. So I don't

have to I mean they can. They can get better
trading off the bottom half of the major league roster
and setting sending some other teams are prospect or too.
You know, if you want to look in the offseason
at trading Panya just because you're in the same boat
you were with Tucker when he's entering the final year
of his contract, that's a different deal. But you know,
they're three games out on this thing, and as long

as they don't slip, you know, past five six games,
I think they're going to try to make a run
at this.

The division is very winnable, very winnable.

And also the Astros have the second easiest schedule in
the major leagues over the rest of the season, so.

Astros organization, the two top prospects that also participate in

are not inmates. They had been all season at Fayetteville,
but like Brian mentioned a, Nions should be in Georgia
by now so he can play in tomorrow's game for
Ashville as he will now be in High A ball
with Alvarez continuing with Fayetteville, probably for the remainder of
the season. Both have been good. Nines has been a

little bit better. This promotion makes perfect sense for the
path that I imagine they want him to be on. NION's Alvarez, Paynya,
and Jordan Alvarez. We're all mentioned by Brian as they're
not trading those guys.

and all I was reaching it would have been for
the Texans, quite honestly, in one area it actually wasn't.
It's a pretty big reach as an article and in general,
but read the part about the Texans. I'll tell you
why it actually makes sense.

All right, this will fetch you two first round picks
and more. Okay, that's what this This is how this
is set up. Will Anderson Junior and CJ.

Speaker 2 (02:04:00):
Stroud.

Speaker 1 (02:04:01):
Those are the two that can fetch you that one
first round pick and more is assigned to Derek Stingley
Junior and one first round pick. That's all you're getting
back if you trade this person. Nico Collins, Danielle Hunter
and Kamario Lassiter. So we'll start from the back to
the front. Those three players that could get you a

(02:04:22):
first round pick. I don't think it's out of the
question that that could actually happen.

Here's why. Nico Collins, maybe you decide that Jayden Higgins
is what you hoped he would be, and more so,
you feel like you're in good shape. First of all,
And I'm not saying immediately, I don't even think this year,
the contractor you have Nico Collins under, even with the
newest one, is so affordable. I don't think there's any
reason that they would move on from him. But as
you move closer to the end of it, are closer

(02:04:48):
to a third extension for him, then maybe that would
be in play, and that's how you could do it,
and another team would be willing to take it on,
and they're the team, Oh, he can get an extension
from them, can't get it from Houston, so he would
want to move to some who could give it to him.
If for some reason the Texans do not have a
good year, I could understand Daniel Hunter being moved. They
would really have to be in bad shape and they

(02:05:09):
would already have to have players that were definitely not
returning that were setting up this bad season. Now the
trade deadlines a little bit further into the season, so
more of the season's played out, so you have a
little bit better idea. But even then you wouldn't be
eliminated from the playoffs, but you might consider yourselves eliminated
from real competition because of who some players you might
not have. Like if the two players at the top

(02:05:30):
of the list that are worth two first round picks,
if they're not playing and they're not coming back, then
I could see that kind of season unfolding. And in
Lassener's case, the unfortunate part about that being so close
to true is if you are so confident in who
you have put on this roster defensively, and who knows,
maybe Terry and Arnold is a Texan and you're playing

(02:05:53):
a third straight year of Kamari Lasser being unbelievable and
he's making second round pick money, which is this year.
So he goes into the final year of his deal
and you know you're not going to resign him, and
he knows you're not going to resign him. You spend
all your money elsewhere, and you still got to give
the CJ contract because he's played so well. Then maybe
he's somebody that doesn't get a second contract, and because

(02:06:14):
of that, you decide, well, his value is very high.
He plays a premium position. Let's go ahead and move
him before he moves along himself. I hate everything with them,
and I don't think the Texans would do that. But
that's the scenario where that actually could happen. One first
round picker more Dare Singley junior, and you just basically

be saying the opposite thing. He's further along in his career,
I guess a touch more injury prono, where although after
his season one he's been perfectly capable of not having
any catastrophic injuries, he's played hurt. He's so elite to
both of those guys. By the way, we're part of
the top eleven corners in the NFL on that pole.
We've been talking about for a while that Jeremy Fowler
has compiled as NFL corners, which also means, this is

(02:07:01):
why you're winning. This is why you're not wanting to
move on from either one of them, even if you
can get a first round pick in return, use the
third pick in the drive on Derek Stingley Junior. Are
you getting the third pick in return? Are you getting
a top ten pick in return? Probably not, unless you
got really lucky that some team was willing to give
you a pick that had that much fluctuation to it.
The real conversation, though, is at the top of the

list because we don't have to talk about Willy Anderson
Junior at all.

He's the type of player like TJ.

franchise completely fell apart and he then became a bit
of an injury issue. I'm sure for the first five
or six years of JJ playing every single game on

the schedule, we thought, of course, he's going to be
a lifer here. He thought the same thing. I do
think that about William Junior. So no need for convo
on that. After this season's performance from CJ. Stroud, when
you have technically three more years of club control, first
of those years would be under his fifth year option,
which he would hate to play under, the next year

would be under a franchise tag, which he would hate
to play under, and the next year would be under
a second franchise tag, which he would again hate to
play under. If he plays well enough that you keep
doing that, that would be okay. But if you have
not extended him and have no plans to extend him
after next year, and you can get two first round
picks and more for him, you've made your decision on

who he is for you. Not the answer at quarterback, right,
And that's why I would you have to think very
strongly about how much sense that would make for your
team to move on from him and get that in return.

of season he had last year, they're not paying him

reason or the biggest of the reasons you didn't advance,

But the question would then become, are you gonna go
to those means that you just mentioned where he's playing
a fifth year and then franchised and then possibly franchise again,
or would you try to go get something for him?

quarterback is fine unless the rest of your roster is
super Bowl ready, and they will be in the twenty

stringer this year that's a developmental project that they like

saying Davis Mills only as what starting caliber quarterback is available.
Kyler Murray changed teams this year to a tame changed
teams this year. Malik Willis changed teams this year, Kirk
Cousins changed team. There are quarterbacks that have tremendous volume
of starting experience that will change hands. But then you're

getting your Super Bowl roster hopes on one of those
caliber quarterbacks. Let's just say, all of whom are likely
worse than CJ. Stroud, but maybe you get a better
playoff performance. I mean, that's a tough one. That's my cood.

You mentioned a name that's very intriguing. I mean, this
is gonna be stomach churning, but I'm gonna say it. Anyways,
the Texans decide CJ is not the dude, but their
roster is largely intact. Otherwise, what does Kyler Murray do

Are they because of the same line that doesn't allow

and with their point differentially, they likely will set up
themselves up with the possibility of playing two more games

at Texans newcomer on defense, not newcomers newcomer. They really

don't have much different about their defense. The interior starting
defensive tackles should be Sheldon Rankins and Tommy t Tommy TOGII,
they were both Texans last year. The Edges Hunter Anderson.
They were both wreaking Havoc Texans last year. He got
al Shire and Henry toatoa manning your two man linebacker

crew and your four two five I believe Derek Stingley
Junior and Kamari last year are gonna line up as
your starting corners Kaylen Bullock and Jalen Peatrie. Two of
your three starting safeties. Those ten players were all Texans
last year, if not even longer than that. Isaiah has
been tossed by the way that leaves red blanketship. So
that's item number two. Was a very surprised when they

signed him, only because I was surprised they spent eight
million dollars of this year's money in twenty four overall
over three seasons. For anybody that plays defense, it was
a weak spot. It definitely needed to be addressed, but
I was very surprised that they decided to do that.
Was one of the first things they did in free agency.
Just happened to be. Today was the day that the

last of those ESPN lists came out from Jeremy Fowler
with the executives another personnel. People polled a position by position,
who were the best ten players at any particular position
Today with safeties, twenty seven safeties received votes. Since thirty
two teams, there's between sixty four and ninety six starting
stafeties in the NFL, depending on how you list them

and who you start. Kaylen Bullock was a top ten
player and deservedly so he came in at number ten.
Jalen Petrie was all the way back at the next
guy eleventh. He was one of the honorable mentions. So
that means the Texans if you counted top ten players
league wide on these lists six positions offensive league, quarterback,
running back, wide receiver, tight end, tackles, and interier offensive linemen,

along with the five defensive spots edge tackle, linebacker, cornerback,
and safety. At those eleven position groups, the Texans landed one, two, three, four, five,
six players in the top ten. If you included the
top eleven, it's now adding two players because both Kamari
Lasser and Petrie were eleventh. So on their defense Anderson Hunter,

Al schier Sting, Kamari Petrie, Bullock, seven of the eleven
starters were voted as among the best eleven players at
their position in the league. That's how incredibly talented and
incredible their production has been. As viewed by members of

the league Red blanketship, the expectations for him be better
than who we had fill in that last remaining gap.
Make sure that nothing else bad, give us a little
bit more depth. Obviously, anybody else we would have been
playing a very young player Jayden Reid among them, Jalen
Reid among them. He played well in Philadelphia, well enough

to earn this. This is the second contract he played
four years in Philly as a pretty unheralded draft pick
of the Eagles, was part of a very good defense.
But like here, I think the same was true there.
They had seven, eight nine players better than him on
their starting eleven. Same will be true here. So expectations
should be met because they're probably pretty low.

But this is just another reminder that I know they've
addressed the line, and that's really going into this season
the number one thing you have to do besides hoping
CJ just gets it together.

no Reblanketship, nothing zero, depend on your draft, depend on
undrafted free agency, depending on players you can draft and
develop TOGII guys like that and spent only money offensively
instead of getting White Teller. Maybe it is Connor McGovern

that you land because you've now allocated a little bit
more money to that offensive line. You obviously re signed
ed Ingram, but maybe a player who got a comparable
contract and free agency is somebody you could have signed
instead that maybe you think is it even better fit him.
They will have at least two new starters defensively. It's
possible they will have four, and it's only well three
excuse me, I can like lumped ed in there. He's resigned.

They will have at least Wyatt Teller. That's one. They
could have two because Braden Smith should start over Trent
Brown if he's healthy, and then it could become three
if their first round pick Keelan Rutledge starts presumably at center.
Now you've got to tell me how much they are improved.
They should be better, but you could be counting on
a rookie you're definitely counting on two older veterans not

playing their best football anymore, but it could still be
better than what you had. And that's all they've done.
They're just trying to be better than what they had.
They're trying to be more of a running, focused, capable team.
And all of those players that I've mentioned are probably
going to be graded out this year and each succeeding
year as better run blocking offensive linemen than as they

(02:18:55):
are as pass blocking offensive line. As a unit, maybe
they overcome that, but each of the veterans, they're all
regarded ed Ingram Wyatt, Teller, Braden Smith, all regarded as
better run blockers than pass protectors. Doesn't mean they're bad
at it. It just means that's how they're graded and viewed.

The funny thing is they could have you know, I
think that makes the David Montgomery transaction how should I
phrase this less not impactful? But like, for example, if
they had made these moves, but they drafted a running
back high, like I don't know, not a first rounder,

but okay, let's just say a second rounder. The guy
that's going to be expected to churn up yards for
you if you're taking him where they would be taking him,
you would almost feel even more pressure on the offensive
line being a better run block at whatever it's gonna
presumably they're hoping it's going to.

Be presuming that players. I mean, this is maybe is
kind of a tough spot for them. If that's what
they were considering, they probably were. Jendarium Price ended up
going at the end of the first round. Obviously, Jeremiah
Love went at the top of the first round, and

it going in. This was a unible. This I don't want,
I don't know. It was bad draft for running backs. Yeah,
there weren't any players that fit in that pocket that
would have made sense for them to you know, let's
jump up to fifty one to get this guy. Let's
fall back to sixty four to draft this player. They're
just I mean literally, nobody was drafted at that position
between the first pick of the second round and one

oh eight, from thirty three to eighty nine or thirty yeah,
thirty three to eighty nine. No other running backs at draft.
It was picked ninety the next one. No second round
running backs picked this year, and the first one in
the third round wasn't even until ninety bad year. Somebody
outside of that group, and I would probably say it's
Mike Washington Junior will be really surprising.

are your best two pitchers. Just get the second part
of the season started with your best two starting pitchers.
I think the thought behind this, and maybe Joe Aspata

done by pitching Lambert on Friday, where he still will
have had a full rest period plus a day six

days and between starts and Hunter Brown on Sunday. Josh,
you mentioned the additional rest he'll get Friday and then
a week later Sunday. But it also separates them, which
the way this astro starting pitching staff has performed could
provide helpful to a team trying not to continue to
overwork their bullpen. Whoever starts in between him and Arrogetty

is that person as we get started, just hasn't been
trustworthy to give them six innings of baseball. You can't
say that Javier clearly, and you definitely can't say that
about Imai. So having somebody pitching in between the two
of them, which separates them, which means less distance, maybe
between three consecutive non trustworthy starters, is probably why they

went this way. And again, I do think Renel Blanco
is starting a game against the Marlins. They play the
Marlins Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at Dyke and Park, So
Emi Blanco, however they want to position those three along
with Javier, we'll find out.

It's interesting that when we've talked about, yeah, they've had
two series sweeps this year, and they won a bunch
of series in a row, and now they've lost a

And they kept telling he's on a plan, he's on this.
Oh did he have surgery? And they didn't tell us
that was interesting? And then in light of what happened,
did it look like he had problems throwing the football
like he had some shoulder problem during the year. I mean,

so many other players, and in this case with Tank,
this is going to be a first day of training

because it's a first day and they're not in pads,

and then the first day he's in pads will be
followed by two or three days where the team is
