Speaker 2 (00:30):
Andy Everett Show.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Here on a Tuesday, SAMs Andy Everett one more day.
He will be back in the big chair tomorrow, but
until then you're stuck with Shane and I for another
two and a half hours.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Today we're off at six thirty.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
As we have a full evening of UTSA related programming
ahead of us YEP six point thirty coach A show
with Jayilly and Pat Evans filling in for Andy, and
then Andy takes back troll of the station at seven
point thirty for some UTSA basketball pregame tip at eight
o'clock tonight. All here on the Ticket, I should also
(01:09):
say fingers crossed if as long as no one tells
coach trailer that Andy is not in the big chair.
I'm hoping he still calls in at six oh one
out of habit and we get to pick his brain
for a little bit in the six o'clock hour. Of course,
it's Tuesday, so we also have Mark VanderMeer, voice of
(01:31):
the Texans, joining us in the five o'clock hour.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Five fifteen.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Okay, Andy sent me all the updates, and so the
run sheet is being amended as we speak. The questions
are being formulated as as quickly as.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
I can ride them. So we've got a lot to
get to.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
If you missed yesterday's program, of course, it was a
Cowboys victory. Monday had a lot of Cowboys talk on
the show Cowboys just a little bit. I think if
we counted up, it was about five segments worth of
a three hour show, but if you ask me, it
still could have been more. Which is why we're gonna
jump back into some Cowboys talk today as well. Less
(02:14):
on the actual results of the game from Sunday afternoon,
more on the financial side of now where things stand
for this team with the defensive additions that.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Have been made.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
I want to talk about some of the pending free
agents on the offensive side of the ball. Obviously, the
big name that gets talked about the most, well, yeah
that's somebody read the run sheet. The big name, of
course is George Pickens. But not enough is being talked
about the fact that Javante is also only on a
(02:53):
one year deal and he has already outperformed the number
he is currently on. So we're going to talk about
some of the some of the ways the Cowboys can
keep the gang together, how much it's gonna cost, how
important they are to the team's success over the next
few years, and how serious Jerry is and making it happen.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
We'll get to that along the way.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Of course, we don't have a Spurs game to recap,
but that doesn't mean we can't talk a little. Spurs
want to talk about these upcoming opponents, you know, their
next next four games as they're still on this road trip,
or all Western Conference teams next three on the road,
and then still get the Grizzlies back at home, so
(03:37):
four straight games against the West. Wanted to jump into
some early season reviews of the Western Conference standings as
they sit today, and I should remind you the next
two games against Portland and Denver are going to determine
whether the Spurs make it out of group play in
the NBA Cup.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
As we sit.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Here today, three weeks away to the day, three weeks
from tonight, the Emirates NBA Cup Final will be played
in Vegas. I'm still hoping the Spurs can carve out
their route, can carve a pathway to that most historic,
(04:18):
most tradition rich of NBA Cup Finals held in the
casino hub of America, which again is pretty ironic these days.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
I don't disagree like leagues at ban gambling and sports betting,
but they have sports betton sponsors, like it's obvious, like
the do what I say, now what I do concept
is kind of lost on them. But ironically, the two
teams of Spurs are behind in their group, which is
C right. I think the group C the Nuggets and Trailblazers.
That's the extra teams they play, and and those are
(04:48):
they're both Cup game qualifiers, like you said, and so
again like it for fans. For fans, even like me,
we saw a hard time accepting this is even a
thing because it just feels like NBA filler, to be honest, But.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Well, that's because that's exactly what it is.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
But the cash bonus behind it, especially for like we
talked yesterday about the middle of the road guys in
the NFL, the middle of the road guys in the NBA.
They want those cash considerations and then to them.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
This is like a cash buyout before they come a
free agent.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
And it's also you know, despite what you think of
the necessity of the NBA Cup, they also still count
as regular season games towards the standings, and these are
teams that the Spurs potentially will be going up against
when it does get time for the playoffs or fighting for.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
Because this is the last two Cup games they had
before for the actual tournament.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Right exactly, Yeah, this will be I have been scouring
over all of the scenarios where the Spurs actually I
was reading them about five minutes ago.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
But it still counts, still counts.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, Portland is Portland is actually in a really good
position to advance out of the group. So we'll talk
about all that coming up here in the next segment.
But as all, whenever I am in the big chair,
I like to start with what I watched last night,
what we all watched. I would assume it was that
late night Maui Invitational Texas Arizona State game. A hell
(06:14):
of a game to fall asleep to last night.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
And the way that it ended, because Texas was actually
like a four point lead down like the last twenty
seconds and then Arizona State mo odom with those clutch
shots at the end, like put them over the top.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
And I remember like I was watching the game and.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
My roommate was watching it with me, and she's like,
why why are you watching this game? And I'm like, well,
you don't understand, Like it's not just a Maui Invitational game.
That game also because the Longhorns, because ker Pt and
Wi are going to be playing Spurs and UTSA games,
that game determined if we would have a show on Wednesday.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
So I was watching it for work purposes.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
That's see. That's always the first of all.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
I love how much of a sports sicico you are
that you and I were actually both watching that game.
What everyone else was watching or what The main story
from last night, of course, was Monday Night football. Christian
McCaffrey's first time facing his former team j C.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Horn just had a wasted career game.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Yeah, three interceptions, he had two.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
He had two of the three.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Also, he was fantastic before he went out with that injury.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
You did not want to throw his way, No, And
there was another pass in the first half where it
looked like if he had been looking for the ball
he would have gotten his third interception on an overthrow
from Purdy. Three first half interceptions for Brock Purdy didn't
matter because Christian McCaffrey ended up with one hundred and
forty two yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. As I said,
(07:40):
in his first game since being traded, first game against
the Panthers since being traded by Carolina, I'm as we
were walking out of here last night, I jokingly asked you.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Despite saying on.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
The show yesterday there is a there's no chance I'm
going to start thinking about cal Boys playoff scenarios right now.
There's no chance I'm going to buy into the idea
that a win against the Eagles bumped them from seven
percent to ten percent. I'm not even gonna think about it.
But the last thing I asked you was, Okay, seriously,
(08:15):
what are we what are we rooting for here? And
you told me of Panthers win would have helped the
better and helped more in the long run.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Yeah, because, like I realistically thought, because the team's ahead
of them, that winning division was going to be more
likely than making the wild card, and it still kind
of is because you have teams like the Seahawks, the Packers,
the Niners, even the Rams because like the West is
gonna come down to the final week like all buying
for three spots. But the problem is now is that
none of the Panthers lost, and the camera the Cowboys
(08:44):
had that tie with the Packers. So even though the
Panthers had the tiebreaker over the Cowboys, the Cowboys have
won less loss, so they're actually ahead of them. Not
only that, the Cowboys played the Lions next Thursday, so
the Cowboys actually good work their way into the playoffs
and actually control their own destiny if if they beat
(09:05):
Kansas City and if they beat Detroit and get to
seven and five, they actually have a bet as clear
path to the playoffs as anybody because the rest of
the schedule after that gets a little light. And I
don't want to again, I don't want to be that guy.
It'll be that Cowboys fan that's like just living on hope.
But it's not hard to see how the Cowboys realistically
could sneak their way into a five, six or seven seed.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
I mean at this point now, as you said, it's
it's it's going to it's going to depend on them
taking care of their business the next two weeks because, uh,
you mentioned the schedule being lighter at the end. I
mean that's when they get to play the Giants and
the Commanders again.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Yep, and they got the Bikings who are on the
downward slope, and the Chargers. You know, we're cann get
him the Chargers because like this, to be honest, like
Kansas City and Detroit, your next two games, they're very
much like teams you cannot take lightly. But they're all
They also seem a lot more vulnerable than we expect
at the start of the season.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Yeah, they're not nearly as daunting of a task to
win those games as I would have felt even a
month ago.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
Like Kansas City has been winning the games they've won
based on really good defense and honestly kind of downplayed
offensive offense is not making a lot of explosive plays
as normally that they would do.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
And make a lot of safe passes and Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
I love the guy Red Raider, Fellow guy Fellow Red Raider,
but he will throw you a lot of passes that
you can pick off.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
Yeah, it takes a lot of chances.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
I've got a fun Cowboys defensive fun fact for you
whenever we get to Cowboys talk later. Because yes, again,
small sample size two games, but the impact that the
additions on defense have made haven't just made them an
average defense. They're borderline top ten over the last two
weeks and a lot of categories. Some they are in
(10:54):
the top ten, others are right on the fringe. But
as far as last night goes, I mean the fact
that the Niners continue to win with all of the injuries.
No team in the NFL has more games lost sitting
on their ir right now. And it's it's not just
fringe starters. I mean, it's their biggest pieces on defense,
(11:17):
between Bosa and Warner. And yet that defense last night
made it look like Carolina was you know, Bryce Young,
rookie year Carolina, And that's also should remind you know,
Bryce Young last week set the franchise record for passing yards.
He was the offensive player of the week exactly, and
(11:37):
then this week can barely can't crack one hundred and
seventy yards ends up right there? A yard short, one
sixty nine, one touchdown, one interception, and I you know,
I when you try to get a read on some
of these fringe NFL teams, particularly some of the teams
that the Cowboys are going to have to pass in
(11:59):
the stand, Carolina is a team that if everything goes right,
it seems like they can win games. But if one
thing goes wrong, there's not a whole lot of weapons.
I mean, Tet's coming on, but still you're relying on
a rookie receiver. There's not many other weapons on that offense.
(12:21):
Rico has been great, but outside of the two weeks
where he faces the Cowboys and yeah, ends up, you know,
putting four hundred yards on paper.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
But over a two week stretch.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
He started to rely more on Exavier la get in
the fourth quarter. He won't really auditioning the ball in.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
The first three.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Yeah, that's where, you know, Carolina, the fact that looking
back on a lot of these early season Cowboy games,
where you know, thinking about the Carolina game, the Chicago game,
we were talking about Chicago's point differential yesterday. You know,
Carolina kind of feels like they're the team on the
other side of the coin. Where Chicago is putting performances
(13:01):
together in the fourth quarter, winning games close that they
might not should have won. Carolina is kind of on
the other side of that spectrum, and we saw it.
I mean last night, they had multiple possessions there in
the fourth quarter to get back into that game, but
they just couldn't put any points on the board to
I mean really, I really just needed them to get
(13:22):
one more touchdown in garbage time to cover that seven
point spread, but they couldn't even do that. I did, Yeah,
I don't know why, but I had faith in the
fighting Rico dowdles last night, and I couldn't couldn't get
any garbage time points when it didn't matter, could couldn't
really get any offense going when it when the game
(13:42):
was still open to go either way.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Let me ask you something because I know we're coming
on a break, but this question has to be asked
when if you're the forty nine ers last night, you
did not win because of Rock Party, right, you won
to spite Rock Party. Am I crazy to think that
in Shanahan's offense that it actually looks better with mac Jones.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Look, the guy I do the pod, the guy I
do the podcast with, is a huge Niners fan, and right,
I wouldn't. I wouldn't say he's gone as far as
to say that, but there definitely are hints of that
question being asked amongst the fan base.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Let me give you some of the numbers that they have.
And this is like just through the first thirteen games.
Remember Rock Party only has four stars. He's missed nine games. Okay,
so you have to consider them a little askewed, but
also factor in the game differential. Okay, so Rock Party
in his four games he's played has seven interceptions.
Speaker 5 (14:37):
Mac Jones in the nine games he started, has six.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Mac Jones has out a completion percentages just below seventy.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Rock Party is at sixty eight. Obviously, the passing yard is.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
Gonna be one side on that one, but the but
the passer rat and the QBR is off by about
fifteen point difference between mac Jones and Rock Party. I Again,
mac Jones has a bigger has a bigger sample size,
but just in terms of like stat disparancy, we'll call
it that, like the fact that Party has more interceptions
in less games.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Is a little alarmed because one thing.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
That brock perty did early in his career was he
protected the ball, he didn't turn it over, He made
safe passes. Lately, he's been taking more chances and they
haven't gone his way.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Yeah, I kind of think that is the you know,
that's the risk reward of playing brock Purty over mac Jones,
because we saw it last night. You know, on on
throws of fifteen yards or more was where all of
his interceptions came from. But mac Jones isn't even unleashing
those throws, so you're not getting the same kind of risk,
(15:37):
but you're relying on a much less explosive offense if
mac Jones as your quarterback. I think there is there
is it's a bit of the gunslinger mentality. I mean,
I kind of respect brock Purty in a way for
continuing to throw those balls last night and not feeling,
you know, not feeling any hesitation just after the first
(15:59):
interception or the second or the third, which again it's
that risk reward where I want my quarterback to continue
because that is the offense and that's where they get
the bulk of their explosive plays. But yeah, the Unfortunately,
the Panthers couldn't help the Cowboys out last night. Niners
continue to roll eight and four now on the season.
(16:20):
Coming up next, let's jump into some of that Spurs
talk because I joke about the NBA Cup, but these
next two games are important for a multitude of reasons.
