Speaker 1 (00:04):
Tusan's a big victory over the Bills last Thursday, and
of course their matchup with the Colts coming up next.
I'm glad I was able to get some of the
old high school football war stories out of him, because
hearing him and Andy go back and forth last week
was pretty entertaining. They both have some good stories to
share there.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I actually actually broadcast a high school sports where I
started working at the ticket Oh really, you should have
told him that. I well to think, Well, I didn't
really sure're going to go that route with that. The
thing is, though, is that I didn't do it to
the level that Andy and Mark did. I did it
for a small town radio company, like a little shack
reo company, and then I took that and actually started
working for NFHS for about two years, which is more
(00:45):
streaming service and all that.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
It was a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
The thing is, though, some of these schools are like
really low funded, so a lot of times they say, hey,
you would they would say, when you bring your equipment,
bring a fold out table because there was no press
box for me to like call the game from. So
I'm calling the game from behind the fence from at
like the thirty yard line try and and and if
my color guy doesn't show up, because it's me and
another guy. If he doesn't show up, it's just me
(01:10):
for for for a two hour game. You high school
games go by in about two hours, Like it's it's
all me at that point.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
But it was.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
It was a lot of fun, especially in the playoffs
because you get like the nice stadiums and like the
better equipment, the better internet.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Like, so the the horror stories you probably hear are
definitely like probably in the early weeks one through one
through four, but like when she had lame in the season,
it gets a lot more smooth.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah. I have a a old college buddy who is
the play by play guy for one of the powerhouse
schools up in DFW, which one, uh one of.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
The oh okay yeahs, like thirty of them?
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Oh yeah, yeah, no exactly. There's you could you could
run the list for sure, kind of like Kenyon Martin
listing power forwards better than Damon Yesterday guy. Or I
don't think Catholic Allen Uless, you got the good old Uless,
Trinity Trojans.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
SoC South oak Cliff now now.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Is a powerhouse. Yeah, with Jennings starting quarterback for SMU
from South oak Cliff, the first Dallas ISD team that
had won Estate championship since the fifties when he did
that at South oak Cliff. But again thanks to Mark
for joining us even with Andy out of the room. Also,
did we have did we give the tickets away?
Speaker 3 (02:27):
We did? I was I underestimated how many people were
going to call.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Oh, so we can do caller number two hundred and
ten maybe next hour.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Maybe not that much, but we can go higher than
caller number eight. Well, I apologize to the public. Apparently
eight was way too low.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Will you give me, Well, don't apologize for eight. That's
Troy Aikman. That's always fine. Will you at least give
me caller number ten? Okay, we'll give away UTSA tickets,
four pack of tickets to the game Saturday in the
Dome at six fifteen.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Don't call now because a lot of people are like, oh,
I could be calling over ten. I call at about
about thirty minutes.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah, we'll do it after. We'll do it at the
end of that first segment in the six o'clock hour.
But while we wait for that, let's jump back into
our NFL week twelve Looksie, because if it wasn't for
Jamir Gibbs, the Lions might be looking at that Cowboys
(03:21):
game a little differently in two weeks because, yeah, it
took overtime, but the Lions eventually beat the Giants thirty
four to twenty seven on a long Jamiir Gibbs run
first play of overtime, which is always it's weird now
with the new overtime rules. As I was watching that
on the red zone, I even kind of forgot. I
(03:42):
said out loud, like Church, that's it, that's the game,
and then forgot that Jamis was gonna get at least
one possession to try to match the touchdown. But Giants
don't score on their one possession in overtime. Lions end
up winning that, maintaining pace in that. Now crazy the
NFC North race.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
And the thing is that we didn't expect the Bears
to be in it for one, but two, we didn't
expect the Lions to be in this position because early
on I think everyone had them being probably a top
the NFL, and we just talked about a couple of
segments ago. The Lions, while still good, are very much vulnerable.
You can run the ball on them. That is not
a team in the past you can run the ball
on and now they have, especially for a Cowboys team
(04:24):
who has been building through the trenches both sides of
the ball, who wants to run the ball with Clayton
Adams zone scheme with Connor Riley, who's developed, especially that interior,
that is a defensive line that if you're the Cowboys,
you can't wait to get a piece of that. On
the opposite side of that, however, when that offense, although
inconsistent because this offense did nothing against the Eagles in
previous Sunday night, when that offense is clicking the Lions
(04:48):
offense at the same time, that still is effective even
though without Ben Johnson, you can kind of see the
inconsistencies behind that because Ben Johnson did so much, not
just in terms of helping the development of h Jack
off but also like helping scheme guys open.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah, I think that's the biggest, you know, the biggest difference.
I think you could say a lot of the issues
the Lions are having this year on offense are a
lot of the same issue the Eagles are having. It's
you know, new offensive coordinators, as guys left the building
to take head coaching jobs. Kellen Moore obviously in New Orleans,
Ben Johnson, as we talked about in Chicago, Dan Campbell
(05:27):
taking over play calling duties two weeks ago, seeing an
offense put thirty four on the board, although it was
against the two and ten Giants, still seeing some improvement there.
Sticking with the NFC North Packers take care of business.
They beat the Vikings twenty three to six. You mentioned it.
I mean, the fourteen and three Vikings from a year
(05:50):
ago are such a far back of the mind thought
compared to where this Viking team sits now. And if
there are I know I have a few friends, a
few people in my life who are Vikings fans. Obviously
with the some of the connection to here in San Antonio,
with the former owner of the Vikings calling San Antonio home,
(06:14):
they might not want to hear this, but we're reaching
dangerous levels with JJ McCarthy. Real questions of let Sam
Darnold walk out of the building because you thought you
had your guy waiting on the.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Will use draft capal to go up and get him right?
Speaker 1 (06:31):
What was it the number nine pick? But they gave
up a future first to.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Move on swopped first.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
They go first, and I think the guy also give
a third if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, And unfortunately, since the since the year two thousand,
there is one quarterback in NFL history that has a
lower EPA per drop back, the lower expected performance, you know,
lower expected positive outcome from a snap? How long since
(07:02):
the year two thousand, twenty five years and the guy,
the only guy that has a worst EPA than JJ
McCarthy is the guy that gets routinely labeled the largest
bust of the last thirty years when it comes to
the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Oh, that's like a handful of is it JaMarcus? It's
JaMarcus Russell him Manziel.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
It is the guy that the Raiders once gave film
study tape to and then the next day asked him
if he actually if he watched the tape, and he
started describing things that were on the tape that weren't
on the tape. Clearly he hadn't watched it. I don't
think JJ is having those kinds of issues. It's just
(07:44):
purely performative or purely performance based issues. But the absolutely
you got to start asking questions if you're a Vikings fan,
or if you're a leader of that organization.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
And it's not all his fault because again, his entire
rookie year was wiped out. This is essentially his true
rookie ye, right, So he's dealing with a lot of
issues there. He's deal with injuries on the offensive line.
He just got back Ryan Kelly. Unfortunately, right now, the
Vikings are second worst in the NFL and turnover inferential,
they're just one turnover better than the Jets, but they
also leave the league and interceptions given up. They are
(08:14):
one of the worst teams that given away turnovers both
through the air and on the ground. And JJ McCarthy,
although heays missed time with that unfortunately, is a catalyst
of that.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
We've seen the.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Positive sides of him as well. I thought he played
well against seems like Chicago.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
For one quarter one of the first three quarters it was.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
That's the things.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
He's been a splash player so far, he's been inconsistent
and again like this is this is the fact a
rookie year. He missed all of last year. So you're
gonna give him some wiggle room to develop. But you're
right going into what will be his third year, you
wonder how long the leash is for him, for Kevin O'Connell,
for a lot of players on this offense.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Yeah, especially you know when they when you have the
weapons they have on offense, I think that leash is
probably a little shorter because you're wanting to maximize the
talent you have on that side of the ball, and
JJ doesn't seem to be the guy to do that
yet so far in his career. Speaking of the guy
they let leave the quarterback room to open up the
(09:11):
door for JJ, Seahawks played with their food a little
bit against the one in ten Titans, but they end
up winning that thirty to twenty four. Darnold throws a
couple touchdown passes. Obviously, we talked yesterday about the NFL's
leading receiver, Jackson Smith and Jigba a DFW kid not
from a powerhouse, that's right, or the whole montage? Do
(09:34):
you have that available the montage? Yeah, As you know
the Seahawks, I think I would probably say are the
I mean, I wouldn't have expected them to have the
NFL's leading receiver after twelve weeks. I wouldn't have expected
them to be basically battling the Rams for the division title.
(09:58):
Now with the Niners trying to keep pace. But you know,
looking at that NFC West, I you know, there's kind
of like we were talking with the NFC South. There
are three teams in that division that I think all
could be potentially make Super Bowl appearances.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
By the way, Jackson Smith a good Juba.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
However, you and Jim Blue.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
There it is. I still think Francessa's is the best
one he gives. Just to say it straight, New Yorker,
just ah, this is below, this is below me. I
don't need to be.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Speaking of Seattle. We can't ignore the story of that game.
Former incarnate Word quarterback cam Ward had his best game
of his career. Like you ask anyone who the Titans
have played, and even the Titans themselves they know he's
not the problem.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
They can see it. He needs more weapons, a better
offensive corner or whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
In that game, two or fifty six yards passing sixty
seven percent completion. He had a touchdown also on the
ground just under forty yard Russian and a Russian touchdown,
So like this could be the turning point in his career. Obviously,
they need to fix the offensive line. People have the
Titans fans that can plain for everybody their offensive tackles,
the lack of the playmakers, the scheme issues the Titans
need a lot, but it's obvious that from small microcosms
(11:14):
of this season, cam Ward is showing the same flash
he did in Miami.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
Yeah, I mean, the Titans cupboard is absolutely bear outside
of cam Ward on the offensive side of the ball.
I also think cam Ward is probably the least talked
about number one drafted quarterback of my lifetime. Yeah, ever exactly.
But that game, of course, more about the Seahawks maintaining
(11:40):
pace in the NFC playoff race. Before we get too
much further behind it. We'll hold off pick back up
with that Chiefs win over the Colts that Mark VanderMeer
was talking about in the last segment, we'll jump back
into our NFL Week twelve looxie, as well as potentially
hopefully fingers crossed joined by coach trailer coming up at
(12:01):
the top of the hour. All that next on The
Andy Everett Show.
