Speaker 1 (00:04):
ESPN is taking its week time revealing the All Stars,
so we'll wait till the next segment to tell you
who they are. Baseball's All Star Game is next week.
Home Run Derby's on Monday. I don't care. I think
the Home Run Derby has lost its luster. It's kind
of like the Slam Dunk Contest as far as I'm concerned.
Hate to be the killjoy on that, but I don't
have any interest in watching the Home Run Derby. But
(00:24):
the All Star Game is something that is always fun
to watch. And actually that game is July fifteenth, not
next Tuesday. It's a week from Tuesday, so we still
have a few more days before we get to that.
We'll get to all those that are in the infield,
the outfield and all that as soon as ESPN finishes
(00:45):
with its way too long dramatization on how long it's
going to take to announce eighteen players. Let's talk about this, however,
and I brought this up a little bit earlier in
the four o'clock Hour that I think a lot of times,
especially in the last ten or fifteen years in the
(01:05):
social media era, that we fall in love with a
certain player who plays for a certain team, and we think, Wow,
that guy would look great being a Spur. And over
the last twenty four to thirty six hours or so,
there were me and everybody else I think around here
was kind of salivating about the possibility that Duncan Robinson
could be a Spur. He's got the appropriate name, we
(01:28):
know that for sure, yep. But Duncan Robinson is not
going to be a Spur. He's going to play for
Detroit next year after the Heat and the and the
Pistons made a sign a trade deal. And so I
look at it from this standpoint. You've got thirty two
general managers and thirty two head coaches, and for the
most part, the general managers and the head coaches are
(01:51):
going to interact on what they want the roster to
look like and what they think their weaknesses are. And
if I look at the current group of Spurs on
this team, I think the only weakness is the prolific
three point threat. I think the Spurs can make ten, twelve, thirteen,
maybe fourteen three is a game, because I'm skeptical that
this unit will make seventeen or eighteen. But I don't
(02:13):
get to coach the team, nor do I get to
general manage it except on the radio, and I maybe
their philosophy is we're not going to shoot eighteen makes
a game. Maybe we're going to play with Wimby and
the way that he plays, and we're going to be
so efficient in the mid range that we're going to
score enough points to win games. And I think certainly
in the playoffs you don't necessarily need the three point
(02:35):
threat as much as you do in the regular season,
because the rules change once the playoffs roll around. We
know they don't specifically change on paper, but the way
the games are called are significantly different. So I think
the interesting thing when we look at free agents and
we look at what the Spurs roster may shape up
to be between now and opening night, is that what
(02:56):
we think is not necessarily what they think. And because
they get to make those decisions, they also get to
either reap the glory of making a good decision or
pay the price of making a poor one. Fortunately, for
the last thirty years, most of the decisions they may
have been pretty good. And while I like Duncan Robinson
(03:17):
as a three point threat, there may be something about
him that doesn't necessarily fit with what the Spurs are
trying to accomplish with this particular roster. And while there
will be thirteen guys that make the opening night roster,
and there'll be a couple of guys on the G
League train and some on two way contracts, and that
twelfth and thirteenth position may be a revolving door, there's
(03:39):
going to be ten or eleven guys that, for one
reason or another, you can kind of count on. And
there's nothing to say that a trade could not happen
between the next twenty four to forty eight hours and
through the trade deadline in February next year. The balls
to the team for a playoff run if the organization
thinks that said player would give them a little bit
more help moving forward into the postseason. And by March,
(04:03):
or actually by January or February, you're going to have
a pretty good idea how good of a team you have.
Can you win fifty games and be a top six team,
can you win forty two to forty seven and be
a play in team? Or have you fixed everything? And
now you just need one more piece to get over
the top. And generally those questions are going to get answered,
(04:23):
probably by the Rodeo road trip and that's about the
time that the trade deadline is and then you can
figure out what you want to do with the rest
of your roster. So, while I think there's some disappointment
that the Spurs didn't make a pitch to get Duncan Robinson,
understand that they already have other plays with the current
roster that they have. And if you look at it,
there's about eleven guys on this roster that somehow, some
(04:45):
way are going to need minutes, and there's two or
three that are probably going to get limited minutes or
even limited games. But the core ten or eleven are
the ones that are as of right now, unless they're
moved or any of them are moved, gonna are gonna
be getting the bulk of those minutes, and adding somebody
else would likely being subtract subtracting somebody.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Yeah, and you know, with Duncan Robinson, obviously it would
have been the potential of the three point shooter that
we were you know, you and I and I think
most birth fans were kind of wanting or or that
the team that we thought they needed improving on. And
I'll say he's basically a better in the aspect of
(05:31):
he's a better Julian Champagne. Uh, he's a little bit
more reliable when it comes to three point shooting. But
the knock on on Duncan Robinson that I compare him
to a little bit of Julian Champenne is Julian's defense
at times is not is not great. And that's the
same thing with Duncan Robinson. And this is where I
always bring up the notion of a Bruce Bowen and
(05:54):
a and a Danny Green is, Hey, if your thing
was you know, you're gonna be a good three point shooter,
you know on ever ever, any.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Given night, you can go over.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
But the one thing that you knew for a fact
that you were gonna get from Danny Green and Bruce
Bowen on the eighty two games out of the season,
you were gonna get good or above average or excellent
defense night in and night out. You didn't have to
worry about that particular part of their game. It was
(06:27):
just Hey, if they were able to get us the
three point shots, then yeah, we'll take that. We'll take
that extra That's the That's the thing I could see
where the Spurs were like, hey, we already have Julian
and maybe in the offseason Julian worked at at his
defense uh more and worked on you know, the three
point shooting as well, and maybe that's why they decided
(06:49):
not to pull the trigger again.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
As a Spurs fan, yes, we we.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Want all of the shiny little all the shiny lights
and everything the names and selfishly like Duel always kept saying,
it just seemed like it was destined. You know, how
can a guy named Duncan Robinson not be a San
Antonio Spur at some point?
Speaker 1 (07:08):
Well, look at the current rosters players on this team.
You got Fox Castle, vi Cell Bryant, Harper, Wimby Barnes,
so In, Cornett Johnson, and Champagnee. Those are eleven guys. Now,
either you're gonna have to play them and they're gonna
have to be part of a regular rotation, or one
of those guys is either going to be left out
or moved. And if you're going to go get a
(07:28):
Duncan run, I don't think you can consistently play twelve guys,
uh and.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
You can play City would argue differently, well, but.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
If you play twelve guys, the last three you're playing
seven minutes, And to me, that's just kind of you're
just The only bad thing is you have to take
a shower before you leave when you're getting seven minutes
of action, because you may sweat a little bit. But
if you didn't, if you didn't get out, you can
just get in the car and go home and deal
with that, deal with that someplace else. But those eleven
guys are basically your core of this team right now.
(08:01):
And there may be nights where one where they only
play ten and by the time the playoffs Sholarrea, they
may only be playing nine. But you do have to
if you're going to add a three point threat. I
would think one of those players would not be part
of that core eleven.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah, yeah, I could definitely see that. But it's the circumstance.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Again.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
If maybe the elite Beasley issue that's going on it
isn't happening, then maybe the Spurs are more of a player.
Maybe they maybe they do decide to move off of
maybe some of their younger guys, uh, just to make
the money work and picks. But I will say this,
(08:45):
one of the particular people that you know you don't
want to try to help would be one pat Riley.
And it's the same thing like when when Danny Ainge
was there for Boston. If if if you saw in
the caller id it said ball, You're like, oh, I'm
about to get screwed. You know, if I make a trade,
I know I'm gonna lose this one.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Yeah, But I think I do think there are teams
that can make trades with them and still come out okay.
Usually pat Riley wins, Usually the Leprechaun wins on any
kind of a trade. But there's if you do it
the right way and it helps your team, even if
it helps the other team too, that's fine. It's when
you trade somebody that couldn't play for you, and all
(09:26):
of a sudden they become an All star on the
other team. Did what did you miss out? Where was
it that you messed that up? And I think that
that happens too often.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
All right.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
We do have an update on Red Panda. We talked
about her in about an hour ago, and the reports
from the hospital ares she has a fractured wrist.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
I think it's a severely fractured rist. It didn't say
which rist, it just said severely fractured. So hopefully Red
Panda will will get better soon. And I did see
the video. They also said that it was the reason
she fell was it was something wrong with the like
a messed up pedal on the cycle, on the unicycle,
(10:08):
so that was to blame.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
So the WNBA is like, man, we lucked out on
that one. We lucked out on that one.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
But although I will say, I'm assuming she carries her
own unicycle.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
You know, I'm sure she has her own insurance too,
and if somebody happened to damage that.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
All right there, they're revealing the rest of the All
Star team for the July fifteenth game.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
Coming up here soon.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
We'll talk about that coming up in the next segment
on the Indie Everage Show. On the Ticket
