On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield. Welcome to the
Bulldog Basketball Hour pro To You Buy Table Mountain Casino,
Welcome to the table.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Seat Geek, the official ticketing.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Partner of Fresno State Athletics. Bud Late Easy to Drink,
Easy to Enjoy and Buy, Pepsi, official soft drink of
Fresno State Athletics. Live from Crowing Wolf tamp Room in Clovis.
Here's your host, the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Well, good evening from Crowing Wolf out here in Clovis.
There's a little chill in the air, but it's nice
and cozy inside this expansive room where you can get
just about anything you want to drink. And tonight for
the first time ever, and this will be the policy
from here on out when we have a bulldog themed
broadcast here at Crowing Wolf. If you're wearing bulldog merchandise

(00:58):
like coach Hernandez right over there. If you've got had
a bulldog on your shirt, you get a dollar off
your drink. And he's got a bulldog polo, bulldog hoodie
and a bulldog hat, he should get three dollars off
his drink. But I think it's a maximum of one item,
so Dodgers does not count.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Tim Schiller.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
I'm sorry, but if you'd like to ride the bus
with Tim Schiller in the time Out club to the
road game at Seasun on December tenth, he still has
room two two five thirty one sixty four. He also
has a trip going to the football game in San
Jose on the twenty ninth, the night before the Bulldog's
returned to Selling Arena for one day only. It's a
Bulldog basketball hour going to hear from one of the

(01:35):
big stars of the last couple of games to Sean
Gory in a bit, but we have coach Van Swaalberg
with us now. Coach, my first question for you tonight,
how'd you sleep last night?

Speaker 4 (01:46):
With a smile but still not much.

Speaker 5 (01:49):
I had about two and a half hours, but I
slept with a smile.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Why don't tell everybody why you had a smile after
last night at the same March Center.

Speaker 5 (01:58):
Well, we had a very nice comeback from behindh and win.
You know we're down seven under the four minute time out.
Kids did a great job and found a way to
pull it out.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
That's two games in a row.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Now where you've applied full court pressure and your opponent
didn't handle it as well as they would like to have.
How much of that is early season not having time
to work press break and how much of that is
just you have the guys who can make that press effective.

Speaker 5 (02:26):
I think it's a combination of both. But I'll be
honest with you. I felt, you know, especially with their
point guard last night. You know, five was just a
tough son of a gun. And you know, we went
back and watched the film today and I think the
word down factor throughout the whole course of the game, you.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Know, because he played so much.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
And then I'm a combination of Deshaun Gory and then
DJ Stickman on them.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
I think really had a big factor at the end.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
And I should point out that both of those young
men you just mentioned are freshmen in their first year
of college basketball, and the guy they regarding it was
not a freshman and came in averaging twenty two points
a game, So that's pretty significant. Not every team can
throw a couple freshmen and a guy scoring twenty two
a game and neutralize his impact on the game.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
They did, They did, And like I think I had
a little side I won't tell you what the wager was.
I don't want to get in trouble, but I no
side wager with the Shawan and keep them under fifteen
and we win. And they did it. They did a
nice job.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
They never have to run baseline a baseline again in
their life, right.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
I doubt that's it.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
No suicides, no seventeens, none of that stuff, Deshaun shaking
his head.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
I guess that wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
We're here at Crowing Wolf right off a Herd in
one sixty eight the Bulldog Basketball Hour here till seven o'clock.
If you come join us, you could win tickets to
the next Bulldog home game, which is Friday night against
the University of New Orleans. On Sunday, they're telling arena
for a three o'clock tip against coach Wahlberg's alma mater,
CSU Bakersfield. Your chance to get back in that arena
where the Bulldogs have played in more than fifteen years,

(04:01):
relive some of those great memories. We'll talk about that
a little bit. I should mention also the food trucks
that are here tonight. We've got two outstanding ones. A
Colorado grill man. How good are their burgers. Anybody ever
have their turkey burger. Our turkey burger is really good too,
and their fries are out of this world. And Basil
Bloom Pizza is here tonight as well. So the food
trucks are in the parking lot. We're inside. And I'll

(04:22):
say it again, if you're wearing bulldog gear, you get
a dollar off your drink here at Crowing Wolf tonight.
At anytime, we do a bulldog show. So coach, nothing
but home games yet so far this year not a
luxury you have too often. Have you ever opened a
season high school, junior college? Do you want or otherwise
with seven straight home games?

Speaker 4 (04:43):
No? Never?

Speaker 5 (04:44):
In fact, I know in junior college, I don't know.
You know, if we played thirty five games or say
twenty games in non league, I don't think we had
more than three or four at home because you're always
in tournament.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
So no, it's nice right now.

Speaker 5 (04:56):
It's nice to be able to get a chance, you know,
sleep in your own bedding, you know, do what you
need to do.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
And you've got Friday night will be the last of
those seven straight home games to open the year. Then
you'll be on the well, you'll be away from home,
but a neutral side game against Pepperdine in Palm Desert
and back here in Fresno to host CSU Bakersfield on
the thirtieth. When you started the year, did you have

(05:24):
kind of a goal in mind for what you hoped
the team could accomplish a non conference play.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
Yeah, but I won't ever tell you that. You know,
my our own goal, you know, personally is you know,
try and get better every day and every week. You know,
that's the biggest thing we have to do. You know,
when you have such a brand new group of players,
it's you know, you're trying to figure out how to
put the pieces together.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
It makes it a little bit different. You know.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
In the old days, you know you had five, six, seven,
eight attorneys and you could put you know, kind of
put the new ones and plug them in. Now you look,
if you have two or three you know journeys.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Yeah, and you're not the only one dealing with that.

Speaker 6 (06:04):
Ye.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Most teams are dealing with an extreme amount of turnover.
And in your case, you're playing more freshmen than most teams.
But last night, if I counted right, those freshmen combined
for forty six of your eighty points. Twenty two rebounds,
seven assists, eight steals, and two blocks.

Speaker 5 (06:27):
That's not bad. That's not bad. Now, the problem is
can you keep those freshmen for a couple of years.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Well, if they're having fun and enjoy playing together. And
that's what was most noticeable I thought down the stretch
was how DJ Stickman and DeShawn Gore. You mentioned they both,
you know, tag team the best player on the other team.
That was a previously unbeaten Stephen F. Austin squad, by
the way, and they kind of tagged Team Keon Thompson
throughout the game. But when they were out there together,

(06:54):
all of a sudden, you're getting takeaways and fast breakpoints.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
We did.

Speaker 5 (06:58):
And like I said, you know, the Shawn's got long arms.
You know, he's six'. Six it was probably about a
six' nine six.' ten wingspan DJ's only. Six TO one
But i think DJ's got a six,' nine wingspan himself
plus being pretty darn they're. Both really very athletic it's
just good to see him get out.

Speaker 4 (07:14):
In those.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
Passing lanes you know we. Need to do that we
have to be, able to, create turnovers you. Know for
our offense.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
DJ's listed, at six to two.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Which WAS mayby generous but, i haven't seen anybody even
if they're seven feet grab a rebound higher on the.
Backboard than he is pretty much every game.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
He is when, he gets a rebound, he gets a
rebound it's not pouncing out to him and he's bouncing up.
To go get that you'll noticeing because he's he's one
of the few guys you ever see get a rebound
that gets, it above the rim, way above the rim,
way above the rim and, you kind of? Go who's
that guy? And you go, Whoa but uh no, AND
then you know i was Very proud of. The shawn,

(07:51):
LAST night you know i think GOING into last night I,
TALKED at the shawn i think he is. High on,
THE boards was six i mean it was three in
the game and he had to end up, having seven
last night which. Is a big difference and the more,
he can do that the more. He's gonna play.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Well and he's been critical in these back to back
victories to come from behind Wins At home Over UTAH.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Valley.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
And steven f austin the Next opponent Is The university
of new Orleans that's coming up friday. Night at six
o'clock if you have, tickets. To that game, great if
you don't you can Get him at. Go bulldogs dot
com or you can come Join Us here at crowing
wolf and you might win a.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Couple free ones tonight and, where.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Your bulldog gear because that'll give you a dollar off
whatever You're Drinking here, at crowing wolf tonight.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
And We'll talk more.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
When deshaun joins us what's impressed me is how much
better these guys are are. Performing as a group the
cohesion seems to have really turned a corner the, last
couple of. GAMES and it's coincided i, wanted to ask
you is this coincidence or is? This cause and effect
the team is playing better and more together in your

(09:00):
point guard has been a. Little more assertive offensively are
those two things related or?

Speaker 4 (09:06):
Are?

Speaker 2 (09:07):
THOSE separate issues no i.

Speaker 5 (09:08):
Think they are Related We need zay on collins to be.
A force, On offense you know jake is gonna have
a ton of. Pressure them, all year you know everybody you,
watch wherever he goes they're.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
Got one two, guys they're hugging.

Speaker 5 (09:21):
Him they're, grabbing him you know we got to open,
up that, Other side, you know, and hopefully you know
one of. These Days, we will but xayon if he,
becomes that scoring force gives us another. Weapon which we need,
and what's, Nice is you know jake's open up a
lot Of.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
Things for, zay on you. Know, it's that combination.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Yeah if the defense is so attuned to, him on
the perimeter there's a whole lot.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
More, space to.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
Operating yes there is if you remember last year it was.
Kind of backed in it's a, little bit, more open
you know down the. Middle of the, lane we've, had
more you know driving layups this year than.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
We did last year We're.

Speaker 2 (09:55):

bulldog basketball hour we'd love to have you come join
us here tonight here till seven o'clock Just OFF of
hern in. A one, sixty eight YOU know you and
i have talked about the decades that you've been around
the game for and there are. Things that have changed
you've been a, part of that change innovating at a lot.
Of levels of basketball but that dynamic you just talked

(10:16):
about that when there's a perimeter, shooter in the game.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
The ball handler may have a little.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
More room to operate is that something you experienced way back,
When as a player did you have a guy on
your team that could really shoot it and gave you
a little?

Speaker 3 (10:30):
More ROOM to freelance When.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
I was at.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
BAKERSFIELD i Actually did i had my Roommate was a
little Italian Six, foot guard frank denucci who could really
shoot the heck. Out of, THE ball in fact i
Think It. WAS against Fresno pacific i think frank went for. Thirty,
nine THAT game wow AND i ENDED up i think
i still have the school record of seventeen assists in
one game because he.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Kept making the.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
Shot he kept making, it was pretty.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Easy making, A little simple passtble so it Was a very.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Simple the question is, who was your wife rose cheering?
Louder for That Night. YOU or frank denucci's.

Join, us here.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Shortly coach we've SEEN and heard how i guess the
degree to which, you wear, every minute. Every game every
possession we've heard the emotion from your postgame. AFTER wins
and losses i know it's. Early in the season you

(15:56):
got a, long way to go you haven't started. A
conference play yet but the way your team won, these
last two games does it feel to you like maybe
this group is early.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
In the season turning a.

Speaker 5 (16:07):
Bit of, A Corner it does and i'll, Be honest
with you i've always, felt that, this group you know we.
Can just, stay Healthy you know losing nathan obviously.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
We've already put a.

Speaker 5 (16:16):
Big dn, ON Us you know dj douglas we got
in for about a minute half last night trying to
get some of the. Rust off, of him you know
it's two of the starters we thought. We'd have, this
year you know that kind of put us. A LITTLE
bit behind but i still think we got enough there
and if they believe it for one another. And keep
working TOGETHER the one thing i think YOU'VE seen is

(16:37):
that i think they share. The ball, really well you
know you don't see as many crazy shots as, we
TOOK last year and i think that's a big difference
on the, team that you know we talked. TO the
players today i think the thing we had to really
clean up, on the offensive end, it is our turnovers
who have some crazy turnovers. That WE shouldn't have but
i think the one thing that WE'RE doing well is

(16:57):
i think we're we're having very, good shots select overall and.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
That's Going to help and i'm glad you BROUGHT that
up because i was going to. Ask you about that there,
were turnovers last night but. A percentage of them i know,
there's No good turnover but i'm guessing that you would
rather have a turnover where a guy is seeing the
floor and maybe trying to make a pass that there
just isn't quite, enough room to make as opposed to

(17:23):
a guy who's turning over because he's hanging on to,
the ball too long letting himself get trapped.

Speaker 5 (17:28):
Or something like that, your first statement's right, there's no good, turnover,
BUT you're right no i mean you're going.

Speaker 4 (17:35):
To have certain turnovers is going to happen during the.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
Course of the game you know that what you DON'T
want is what i call those selfish turnovers where you
should have gave it up, and you, kept it, you
overdribbled you know or. You took, YOU know to me
i think the worst turnover. Is a bad shot is
What happens there is usually when you see a, bad
shot go up the other team gets a brick with
a or, an easy. You know easy three then what,

(18:00):
Happens you come down, the, next guy goes well you.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
Didn't pass to me i'm going, to do.

Speaker 5 (18:03):
My thing you know, and so, this group you, know
AND then again you i think goes back to the type.
Of players, we have you know you got three, pass
first point guards and You know In zay ON And,
bashing and dj stickman and then you got our bigs
are very unselfish, their past first bigs and. You had
that combination it's. Really, kind OF nice.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
Yeah that's I guess that's what.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
I was getting at some of the turnovers last, night
were unselfish, turnovers not you know maybe in a situation
where you haven't opening to, take the shot yourself but
you're just training your brain to look.

Speaker 3 (18:37):
For, an open, man true.

Speaker 5 (18:39):
Very true you know and, the thing that again they're
going to learn through the course of the year when
to make that certain past or how high to thot,
depending on that person, who that person, is and so
forth so that that's going.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
To come with Time we're Talking.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
To van s Wahlberg we're Here at crow and Wolf
off of hern in at One Sixty Eighth the bulldog
basketball hour Till Seven o'clock to Shaun gory freshman for we're.
Gonna join us shortly we'll see if he gets something
Good To eat From colorado grill or basil bloomloads of the.
Food trucks here tonight dollar off your drinks If you.
Wear something bulldog related so you mentioned biggs that see

(19:15):
the floor and one thing that impressed me last night
and the game before you talked. Earlier in the year
you know you've mentioned a couple of TIMES The loss
to usc upstate and attribute some of that to substitution
patterns and having a preset plan of getting guys in
at a certain time. And rotating this often i've noticed the,
last couple of games, and especially last night that you

(19:38):
played to. THE matchups more Right i mean jack manny
for a couple games was. A really, Good matchup last
night gashper had a whole lot more minutes because he
was effective and he was a tough matchup.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
For the other team is.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
That something you guys kind of feel out in the
flow as a staff or is that maybe a shift
in your own perspective on how this particular team's.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Gonna go win games.

Speaker 5 (20:00):
It's how we're. Gonna go win games to, be honest,
with you you know you're. Exactly the, USC upstage you
know i gave that game away by.

Speaker 4 (20:08):
Letting certain people play. I'm not BLAMING them i'm just
i want to get.

Speaker 5 (20:12):
Certain people enough time, AND then, after, that i said,
no enough of that you're going.

Speaker 4 (20:18):
To earn your.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
Time and, so forth you know There's some games like jack.
Has been really good we're going. To write him more
last night, he wasn't as good and, Then g comes
in gasper comes in and has a heck of a
game and does a.

Speaker 4 (20:30):
Lot of little things i'm, going to.

Speaker 5 (20:31):
WRITE him you know i tell, you today in, practice
macconn day off, Mcconn's been you know i've obviously been
on the bench, quite a, bit lately, you know but
shoot he had a heck, of a practice today and
if he, DOES it again tomorrow i want to SEE
this a way i, can finally, reward him you know
give him a couple of minutes In, the game on
friday and, then if he performs then then you give
him a little. Bit more time there, but it's you

(20:53):
know you, got to earn it and then once, you
get in there you.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Got, to prove, It friday six o'clock bulldog to try
to prove it for a third straight Time As they
host New Orleans At. The save mart center last night,
wasn't the biggest crowd but it. Was an enthusiastic crowd it.
Was kind of Funny they recognized That Bulldog baseball legend
tom goodwin in a timeout and everyone got on their
feet and it almost felt like they didn't sit back
down because they were on their feet here and you on,

(21:17):
those last two minutes you ever feel that in the
course of the game or you two dialed into MATCHUPS
and execution.

Speaker 4 (21:24):
When i really feel it's near the.

Speaker 5 (21:26):
End of, the game you know in, the last TWO
games the crowd i really felt. REALLY helped, the players
i mean you go, to the other Schools, you go
to Utahstate You Go, to san diego state you, go.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
To those schools especially this Year You. Go to grand
canyon you talk about.

Speaker 5 (21:40):
A home court advantage when you get, a crowd in
there it does. So many, good things, you know number
one obviously, It helps you, PLAYERS but number two i
don't think a lot of people realize put some. Pressure on,
those referees you, know at our pace you know it's so,
quiet half the time it's really easy for that REFEREE
to make that i won't say. What kind of call,

(22:02):
and then you know now, all of a. Sudden you,
got it you know ten thousand. People are chewing, you
we're in off and the next time you're not.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
Going to get. That call against you.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
There have been studies done, about that very phenomenon. Believe
it or not before we take This break and bring
deshaun on to join, YOU for a bit i want
to talk to you about a couple. OF games from
now i know we try not to, get Ahead matchup
wise but november Thirtieth is when the valley has a
chance To fill cell ind arena again like, the good
old days bring back some memories of grants to them

(22:34):
and The. SELLOUTS under tark and i know it's going
to be an important game for, your team to win
but can you give us a chance of what that
means to you and the program to have an extra
excuse to bring so many alumni back and bring back
maybe some fans who Haven't been To the saint mart.

Speaker 3 (22:50):
CENTER in a while i.

Speaker 4 (22:51):
THINK it'd be.

Speaker 5 (22:51):
Great i think, it's a great experience not, only FOR
our fans but i think. For the, whole CITY you,
KNOW last i heard i.

Speaker 4 (22:58):
THINK it's forty plus.

Speaker 5 (23:00):
I are coming back ex, players ARE coming back which.
I THINK is phenomenal and i think it's good for
our players just to get a, chance to, meet them
see them learn a little bit more about the history of.

Speaker 4 (23:11):
Us and, say Basketball you know like.

Speaker 5 (23:13):
I've told, YOU before YOU know i Was i played
in soundarrader way back, in nineteen seventy, Seven, nineteen seventy EIGHT.

Speaker 4 (23:24):
Okay and, then I you know when I came back and.

Speaker 5 (23:26):
I lived in town here get a chance, To Watch,
you know gary Colson, and it, was Tark you know
especially tark when, he really you know. Got that place,
going so. IT'S neat you know I think it's a
i'm hoping that we can do.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
IT once a year i think it'd.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
BE a great, opportunity i, was thinking you know one
of my favorite days of the baseball program is the
alumni game because you see all these guys who pitched
in the big leagues or hitting the big leagues or
just great, players from, twenty thirty forty, fifty sixty years
ago they. COME back every year i could see selling
arena once a year becoming. That kind of thing, and
what you said, forty plus alumni coming maybe it already

(24:02):
is going to. Be THAT this year and i have
to ask you IN lie of something i saw on.
Social media earlier, today by the way if you've got
a Question For, coach or deshaun gory you can send
it on the xcept with that hashtag ask. Fs while

stories around the country, where guys, are getting, you know
six seven eight years, To play college, basketball and he
said DOES that mean since i left, AFTER my junior

Speaker 3 (24:44):
Year at Weber State the whole big sky is holding.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
Their breath right now But of all those bulldog alums
who are Going To be At celen, arena on november
thirtieth is there one guy that you'd really love to
suit up.

Speaker 3 (24:56):
For a few minutes maybe he's. ALREADY on YOUR staff
i guess i didn't Think, that.

Speaker 5 (25:01):
Could beat tighter especially now since you know the way
you know he's.

Speaker 4 (25:06):

And i don't think i've ever asked.

Speaker 3 (25:27):

Speaker 2 (25:27):
Before i know it it's never fair to ask to
coach his favorites that he coached.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
Or anything like that but you weren't. Coaching those bulldog teams.

Speaker 2 (25:33):
You were appreciating them was, there someone who's game not,
necessarily his physical ability the crazy dunks, or anything like
that but just the way he played the game that you.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
Really admired or appreciated.

Speaker 5 (25:46):
You know one person who sticks out because he's a.
Good friend Of Mine.

Speaker 4 (25:50):
It was.

Speaker 5 (25:50):
Brian santiago Uh huh you know, brian had. That deep
sad shot he can choot, about thirty thirty five but
just knew how, to play. The game you, Know for
you know bryant, wasn't the greatest athlete but he just
knew how to play the game the right way and
knew how to make, the right you.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Know the right place and.

Speaker 5 (26:07):
It's always nice have a knockdown shooter.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
Still in the record book on that three point percentage
list and. Had A triple double so I guess We're
playing byu.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
At seladarina next year is. THAT what you're saying.

Speaker 4 (26:19):

that clean?

Speaker 4 (30:11):
It was?

Speaker 2 (30:11):
Very clean, all right my apologies didn't. Mean to Insult
you certainly wasn't giannis going from half court to the
cup with like six steps Last? Week, For the, bucks
sorry pat riddlesbrigger, not trying to. Dog your Family There
so coach Deshaun gory's. Here, now saturday night yeah three
guys fouled out and he comes. INTO the last minute

(30:34):
i mean he's probably getting cold on, the bench over
there but he wasn't cold enough to nail at three.

Speaker 3 (30:39):
To win.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
The game for you how many freshmen over the years
at any level have you had to?

Speaker 5 (30:44):
Do, SOMETHING like that well i, know none. Last YEAR
but no and i said that to the on the.
POST game, That, night i mean DeShawn it's As hard worker.
As i've ever had he's in. There all the time if,
you talk about it. Half hour individual work he wants
to sneak, in another hour here. Another half hour there

(31:04):
he's in the. Gym all the time got the most
shots up this summer of. Anybody in our team he's
a he's, a phenomenal, hard worker you know and he
knows he's got to get a. Shot better, and better
you know he's GOING to be what i. Call a,
streaky shooter you know his confidence is probably his best.
Weapon for, his shooting you know there's some little things
that we got to mechanically That You know that coach roch,

(31:27):
is working with him but he believes in, his SHOT
so much which, i think is phenomenal, and like you
said to come on and have that confidence, to take
that shot, not only take, it but.

Speaker 4 (31:36):
Make it, which phenomenal you.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
Know they've been saying for a long time around the
game of basketball that a shooter with no conscience. Is
a dangerous guy is that kind, Of, how you feel
deshaun that there's there's no shot that isn't.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
GOING to Go in i. BELIEVE i'm a Shooter i don't.

Speaker 3 (31:52):
KNOW i'm a shooter i think you're. Starting to demonstrate that.

Speaker 2 (31:58):
Let's talk about that talk about how You Ended up
at presno, state and all that but not this past
game where you just tore everything up and had twenty
points and made threes and threw down dunks and had steals.
And all of that But That game against utah valley
when you, came into the ballgame? What was your focus
what were? You Expecting to happen just harry's turning your,

(32:23):
back on, right. NOW go ahead try.

Speaker 19 (32:27):
I was expecting just really just, to go in there, maybe, get,
a rebound play beefense and find one of my other
teammates that are scoring the ball.

Speaker 4 (32:35):
A little bit better than me right now and just.

Speaker 19 (32:36):
Find them open shot and the shot just CAME to
ME and i, realized I was open.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
So i took.

Speaker 2 (32:42):
It and sometimes when there's not a lot of time,
left on the clock that's, your, Best, friend too right.

Speaker 19 (32:47):
Yeah it was what for five seconds ON the clock and.

Speaker 4 (32:51):
I was wide open so.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
And did that make a difference for you going into
this last game in? Terms of, your confidence.

Speaker 19 (32:59):
Oh yeah after, after that shot in my confidence shot
up ten times more.

Speaker 4 (33:03):
Than what it is so. That's, hard to believe.

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Well maybe it'll be even ten times higher after the
twenty point game he put. On, display last night coach
when you were, in the recruiting season What was it
about deshaun and his, abilities, that told you yeah this
would be a really nice Guy to.

Speaker 3 (33:26):
HAVE at fresno's day i.

Speaker 5 (33:28):
Really loved his wiringess he reminds me so much of
one of The Proside, coach in denver Court A. Player named,
Corey brewer you know corey was just, a tough, nose
kid you know having almost the, same type, of body
you know but he could do a.

Speaker 4 (33:44):
Lot of different things he'd. Get to. The rack, you know,
corey again to me was not a.

Speaker 5 (33:48):
Great shooter at ALL but in the nba he had,
a fifty, point GAME you know because i think.

Speaker 4 (33:54):
HE'S more for score I think with The shawn is
the sean is going to be.

Speaker 5 (33:57):
A very good score it's A thing about the, sean
on you know there's gonna be nights his threes aren't.
Going to go in but what he can do is he.
Can cut really well he can run, the floor, really
well you know and go. To the, offensive boards to
me good players, know how, to score you know without
just looking to. Knockdown and outside shot and that's the
one thing. He Does really well.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
And i've seen him create a few shots and a
lot of guys his, height don't always create especially as.

Speaker 3 (34:24):
As freshman in.

Speaker 5 (34:25):
College he's, going to, be one you know not this
year the following year on our.

Speaker 4 (34:31):
Plans is to get HIM more to what i call
one of my.

Speaker 5 (34:35):
Two, point guards up top to where he can handle
the ball and be able to, because up his size
be able to see.

Speaker 4 (34:40):
Things and.

Speaker 5 (34:41):
Create things you know, that would you know that would
be my goal with him in the offseason to make
him that kind of that.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
Type of a player and we'll talk about, his Defensive.
Ability TOO but deshaun As i asked coach wahlberg why he,
wanted to recruit you let me ask you about, that
THAT same situation because, i know, you had you know
af years worth of being recruited and might have had
a chance to go to college a little earlier than this.
And Play for somebody and i'm sure you learned a

(35:09):
lot in the process then and, this past recruiting season
can you give us a hint of the journey that
brought you?

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Here to the, valley.

Speaker 19 (35:19):
On my visit really the coaching staff. THEY showed true
love i felt, really loved coming here from the pictures
to them picking me up from the airport to just
going out.

Speaker 4 (35:31):
To eat, and everything.

Speaker 19 (35:33):
And honestly they just kept it ruined me about everything
from when they started RECRUITING me to when i. Committed
to the school THEY told me what i was getting
myself Into and how much i'll be able to get
into the gym AND just be who i am and
find my, role ON this team and i just fell.

Speaker 4 (35:49):
In, LOVE with it.

Speaker 2 (35:52):
Coach i have field to hear a young man say,
that from the heart the, way he just know and.

Speaker 5 (35:56):
That's just, who the, sean is you KNOW the one
thing I think that The sean would that i've, been
around TOO long and when i tell people exactly what
we're gonna do and how we're, going to do. It
that's just me and the one thing Everybody told me
about deshaun is. He's a gym rat. He's a gym rat.
He's a gym rat. He's a good kid all he
wants to do is. Be In the gym and. I'm

(36:18):
a big believer you get twelve, thirteen of those guys
you're gonna. Have a fun team you're gonna have a
good team because they're gonna want to. Get Better and
better and deshawn's that.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
Type of a kid so we're going to take a
break here And move on with deshaun for the rest
of the show that You. Hang out WITH rose but before,
i let you go how about a Little scouting report
for Friday Night against the new orleans team that's put
a few scares in.

Speaker 3 (36:42):
People, already this year.

Speaker 5 (36:43):
YEAH they went TO, tcu and, beat tcu you know
which is not an. Easy thing to do they got Beat.
LAST night at pepperdine i watched THAT game just. Before
I came here if i heard it right on the
ON the on the, tv last.

Speaker 4 (37:00):
You know the.

Speaker 5 (37:00):
REBROUGHT broadcast last night i think they're either the talls
or the second tallest. Team in the country they got
like eight, guys six seven above they, got three seven
footers but they got they. Got a nice team they.
GOT a nice team i still believe if if we,
can play, OUR good hard basketball i think it's gonna

(37:21):
be a fun game. For people to watch it's gonna
be it's gonna go. Down the wire again they GOT
a point guard i actually we. Actually recruited last year
we were kind, of looking at. Him looking at him then.
We Didn't take him so i'm sure he's gonna want
to poot something That's, took over him buckley and. Then
they're two guard he's averaging. Twenty two a game. It's
a phenomenal shooter so it's gonna be a. Fun, game

(37:41):
to watch well.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
The last, Two have not disappointed so Let's see if
the dogs can Make it three straight friday. Night, at

Speaker 19 (43:19):
It UP to you when i seen him pumming in
his left hand and she's, LIKE made eye contact i
knew he was throwing it once it was. IN his left,
hand i knew.

Speaker 3 (43:27):
It and a lot of ali us have a lot.
Of error under him that one came, pretty direct. At,
YOU didn't it yeah i.

Speaker 19 (43:34):
Mean my teammates know if you put, It near the rim.

Speaker 4 (43:36):
I'm ana grab it that's. All you gotta do she.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
Got a pretty big catch radius.

Speaker 4 (43:41):
Of, what you're.

Speaker 3 (43:41):
Saying yeah for sure did? You, ever play football.

Speaker 19 (43:44):
No MY dad was scared i, was Gonna get hit
and i'm one. Hundred and sixty pounds it. Wouldn't, have
been ended well my parents didn't let.

Speaker 2 (43:52):
Me play football either it wasn't, for the same reasons although.

Speaker 17 (43:56):
It.

Speaker 3 (43:56):
Kind of was.

Speaker 2 (43:59):
So victorville is, listed as your hometown Not Too, far
from palm desert where he's Gonna be Playing. Next wednesday
against pepperdine does that mean you're gonna have a little
bit of? A, Cheering, Section.

Speaker 19 (44:09):
There no no I'll Have all. The fresno, state fans my.
FAMILY it's a lot i have, a lot of siblings
so there's a lot going. On at the house so
they don't, come to many games but they will be.
At a few games then you'll know.

Speaker 2 (44:24):
They're there for sure and when you say, a lot
of siblings?

Speaker 3 (44:28):
HOW many were, talking i got four and one.

Speaker 4 (44:30):
Of them in college.

Speaker 19 (44:31):
One in eleventh grade my sister's in seventh grade and.
Just started playing volleyball she's, on the national team so she's.
Starting to traveling stuff, and my little brother he doesn't
know what he.

Speaker 4 (44:41):
Wants to do.

Speaker 2 (44:42):
Yet so your sister's on. The national volleyball team who's
got better?

Speaker 19 (44:47):
HOPS you, or her i mean she's thirteen years old and,
she's Five to eleven so i'm thinking she'll be jumping the.

Speaker 3 (44:55):
Way higher, to me soon, soon but. Not yet not.

Speaker 4 (44:59):
Yet i'm most. Athletic in the family.

Speaker 2 (45:01):
Still no brothers that have beaten you one. On, one or.

Speaker 19 (45:06):
Anything no no brother neither of my brothers can be.

Speaker 4 (45:08):
Me one on one.

Speaker 3 (45:10):
Can any of your teammates beat? You. One on one
neither none of my teammates could be me.

Speaker 4 (45:14):
One on one either?

Speaker 3 (45:15):
Has anyone come.

Speaker 19 (45:15):
Close nobody's came close the only person That's Came Close Was.

Speaker 3 (45:20):

Speaker 4 (45:23):

Speaker 3 (45:26):
So he hasn't beaten? You, one on one? No he,
beat me, oh okay, ALL right all right i mean.
YOU said came close i. JUST wanted TO clarify i
mean i was.

Speaker 4 (45:33):
Close to beating him.

Speaker 2 (45:36):
Let's talk about, that for a, second because you know
there are a lot of great players of. THE past,
Coaching Basketball i mean coach walberg just told you he
still has AN Assist. Record at csu bakersfield but to
have a guy who just a few years ago WAS
playing in the nba and every day a practice shows
you that he can still shoot FIFTY percent plus from

(45:57):
nba three point range and go through your pregame dribble
drills and all that just the.

Speaker 3 (46:02):
Way you guys are what does?

Speaker 19 (46:04):
That do for you, you know you said when, HE
practices with us i don't think he, Misses like AT
all like he's i don't remember him missing anytime he's
ever stepped on.

Speaker 4 (46:14):
The floor of me so. He's a great.

Speaker 19 (46:17):
GUY he knows what, i want from basketball, so he,
tries to you know teach me a little more or
tell me a LITTLE more about what i. Wanted how
to succeed so he's a great guy and just he's.

Speaker 4 (46:29):
Leading away.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
FOR sure love it i probably shouldn't tell you that
when he was a freshman here he was, about your. Same,
weight maybe lighter yeah and he really, was not a
shooter so you.

Speaker 3 (46:41):
Could jump and done he tells me.

Speaker 19 (46:42):
That all the time he's telling you the.

Speaker 3 (46:46):
Truth all the.

Speaker 2 (46:46):
Time But He worked, and coach walberg said that's one.
Of your greatest attributes where? Did that come from when
did you figure? Out that hard, work like that, dedication getting,
their early staying laid all those things you hear about
with the gym rat mentality that.

Speaker 3 (47:00):
Actually be worth it.

Speaker 19 (47:01):
Just growing up seeing my. Mom and, dad work you
know they get up early to go to work. And
come home, late so IT'S like why wouldn't i go?

Speaker 4 (47:10):
To the gym early IF this is what i want?
To do, in life you know this is.

Speaker 19 (47:13):
Pretty MUCH my job and i just learned at a
YOUNG age like If i do, what I'm supposed to
THEN i'll get what i.

Speaker 2 (47:18):
Want Out Of it and coach wahlberg made the comparison
to a guy that HE, Coached In. THE nba Corey
brewer i understand kobe was kind of. Your, favorite growing.
Up yeah he was was there anybody else that inspired an?

Speaker 3 (47:31):
Element, of your game.

Speaker 4 (47:32):
WELL you guys know i.

Speaker 19 (47:32):
Wear Number thirty five kevin durant is. MY favorite basketball
player I Look up to.

Speaker 4 (47:37):
KEVIN durant. A lot i was i grew.

Speaker 19 (47:40):
Up being called slim my, teammates called me slim And He's.
Called THE slim reaper so i Just Take out to.

Speaker 4 (47:46):
Kevin, durant a.

Speaker 3 (47:47):
Lot well that's a pretty good guy to.

Speaker 2 (47:50):
Follow in his footsteps and one of the things that
made him so unique was a guy his size wasn't
supposed to be able to shoot it on the. Perimeter
like he does do you keep track of how many
shots you take and? How many go in That's, all
for coach well which he keeps.

Speaker 19 (48:05):
Track of all that he'll get back to me about
it the next day and let Me know where, if i'm,
shooting Right shooting left if, i'm Shooting forty percent if,
I'm shooting eighty percent he'll let me.

Speaker 4 (48:16):
Know the.

Speaker 3 (48:16):
Next morning so good they have guys like.

Speaker 4 (48:19):
That in. Your. Corner it's great great we're.

Speaker 3 (52:35):
Between now and.

Speaker 2 (52:36):
Then they haven't, traveled at, All Yet and no deshaun
gory did.

Speaker 3 (52:39):
Not travel on that first highlight that.

Speaker 2 (52:41):
We heard today either, AT that, Last highlight i mean
i'm thinking that's one of the trickier plays that gets taken,
for granted in basketball because you're thinking, you're gonna dunk
it and. Then you catch it at what POINT do
you realize i better not. Try to dunk it i've
got to find a way to get it. In SOME
other WAY when.

Speaker 19 (53:00):
I realized i was a little bit behind the rim
and behind THE backboard IS when i realized i probably
could have. Tried TO dunk it then i get. Took
OUT the game, so, i was like yeah let me
just lay let me.

Speaker 4 (53:12):
Just lay it, up.

Speaker 3 (53:14):
So the.

Speaker 2 (53:16):
Yeah what do they call that, in the? Nuclear, talks,
the deterrent yeah yeah the deterrent was getting taken.

Speaker 4 (53:25):
Out of the game it was a bad moment to.
Try something like. That too bad moment you can get.

Speaker 3 (53:30):
Hurt, doing that too right like hit your head on.
The backboard.

Speaker 4 (53:32):
Or something anything, Happened, Just laid UP deshaun.

Speaker 2 (53:35):
That's all i thought well you did, and it worked
well and you finished.

Speaker 3 (53:40):
With a big win.

Speaker 2 (53:41):
Eighty To seventy Eight or steven, f foston, twenty points seven.
Rebounds All those steals what i'm guessing defense probably wasn't
your number one focus for most of the time, you've
been playing.

Speaker 19 (53:55):
BASKETBALL not at all i wasn't. EVEN on the radar
i wanted to just COURT the ball if i just
wanted to put the. Ball in the basket so.

Speaker 2 (54:04):
How has that changed Since You arrived at presno State
To play for coach.

Speaker 3 (54:07):
Wahlberg.

Speaker 19 (54:08):
In THIS staff uh when i First got, here on
june fifth the first words That came out OF coach's
mouth where i need you to beat. Somebody defensively for
me he's for one of the first words. He said
to me and it just kind, of stuck with me
and even Going through the whole june and still trying
TO find out who i am defensively AND who who
am i going to, be for this team just defense.

(54:29):
Just STUCK with me and i just always tried. To
guard my yard IF not, ANY when i don't. I
can yell that so it's like just do it to.
Sign just do, it it.

Speaker 3 (54:37):
Sounds like really show the effort that's you're. TRYING guard my.
Yard i like that.

Speaker 2 (54:44):
And with the way you're built At Six' six with
coach wahlberg said. A six or nine wingspan have you ever? Had,
that measured your wingspan yeah.

Speaker 4 (54:52):
We got to.

Speaker 19 (54:52):
Measure it in the summer, so.

Speaker 3 (54:56):
So that makes you uh you.

Speaker 2 (54:59):
Can, BE a sneaky defender yeah i SEE that from
experience because. I got really long ARMS the guys don't
think i can block their. Shot or get A pass
and even, when I'M old and slow sometimes i still
sneak up. On them and get them you got a
lot MORE going for you than i, do on the
basketball court so, that makes you versatile defensively so you
could guard a, big guy with your, legs or like

(55:20):
last night you can have that challenge of moving your
feet and try to stay in front of a physical.

Speaker 19 (55:25):
Guard and everything in between What people don't know, Is
i'm at, my HEIGHT i'm. Super Fast like i believe
if i'm not, the fastest on the team on, the
second fastest behind me and stick pretty, much fast on
the team so we can. Move Our feet pretty well
and i'm just taller and just. Able to, MOVE my
feet you know i ran track for, a Little bit
grown up so i've just learned how to run and

(55:48):
it just do you?

Speaker 16 (55:49):
Know?

Speaker 4 (55:49):
How to do it now did?

Speaker 6 (55:51):
You?

Speaker 19 (55:51):
EVER do long jump yeah, i did, do long joe
you know for ME to, AS lengthy, As I am. I, Sucked.

Speaker 4 (55:56):
Really i sucked yeah. It's.

Speaker 19 (55:58):
ALL about the footwork yeah i, couldn't, DO high jump
though yeah.

Speaker 4 (56:02):
I got to six ten i jumped Six ten.

Speaker 19 (56:04):
So, DOING the fosberry flop yeah i was scissoring.

Speaker 5 (56:08):
Right.

Speaker 6 (56:08):
Over.

Speaker 19 (56:08):
You SCISSORED it yeah WOW then i, QUIT because i
was like, i don't know every time, Even, AROUND the
four hundred no i.

Speaker 2 (56:16):
Don't want to, do that so you know so you,
can guard in your mind, especially as you just said
anyone from one to.

Speaker 3 (56:24):
Five on the other team is?

Speaker 2 (56:26):
There a preference in there is there a challenge that
you enjoy the most when, YOU get ex assignment defensively.

Speaker 3 (56:34):
I really don't.

Speaker 4 (56:35):
Want to guard a five. You Get bumped too much.

Speaker 19 (56:38):
Like I've had of moments Where i've had. To guard wilson.
In practice it's not, fun it's just, not fun like
at all he's, just trying to seal you or he's.
Just he's just Moving me so it's like i'd rather
guard a wing or a smaller guard and just either
speed the smaller guard up or just make it difficult.

Speaker 4 (56:58):
For the other teams wing.

Speaker 2 (57:00):
I'm not surprised. TO hear you, say that i wonder
though over the course of your time here. If, that'll
change at all yeah because you told me you've actually
put on some.

Speaker 3 (57:07):
Muscles, SINCE you.

Speaker 4 (57:08):
SHOWED up yeah i did i.

Speaker 19 (57:09):
Put on, about, fifteen pounds sixteen pounds so And What your?

Speaker 3 (57:13):
Order from, Colorado grill.

Speaker 2 (57:14):
Today triple cheeseburgers french fries you want to see if
they can put more?

Speaker 3 (57:19):
Than three patties on there. You gotta stick with three.

Speaker 19 (57:21):
I'm gonna STICK with three only because i.

Speaker 2 (57:24):
Already ate there you go we've got less. Than two
MINUTES left here i'm sorry? I didn't ask this sooner
but what has made you guys. So cohesive as a
group you seem, to genuinely appreciate each. Other enjoy each
other's company but you're all, brand new to the program,
Almost all of you anyway what do you think has made?

Speaker 3 (57:43):
That such a fast process you just.

Speaker 4 (57:46):
Don't support for each other we.

Speaker 19 (57:48):
Have so many unselfish guys even our culture staff, is
very unself was like, no matter what we, do we
support each other, no.

Speaker 3 (57:56):
Matter who's, playing bad who's playing good.

Speaker 19 (57:58):
We support each other and just no matter what, going
on the, locker room on, the, court off the court like.
We just support each other so that's just showing support
to each other and showing that. We Care for each
other since june and even the Guys. That got here
in august we all just clicked immediately and we haven't
had no bad guys and we just we just show
each other.

Speaker 3 (58:16):
That, we love each other well, it's.

Speaker 2 (58:18):
Putting fun to watch and hopefully we're Gonna say the
Same Thing friday night against new orleans. With a six
o'clock tip is there anything, in your Short, time here
you said june that's only five. And a half months

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
