(00:23):
State Athletics. Live from Crowing Wolf tap Room in Clovis.
Here's your host, the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Well, hey, hey, it's a beautiful night here in the
valley and beautiful evening right here at Crowing Wolf, right
off of Herndon A one sixty eight, a parking lot.
It's hopping, got a few running clubs that are doing
their Halloween mixer tonight. There's still some seats available for
you if you want to come join us here till
seven o'clock. We're giving away Bulldog basketball tickets Crowing Wolf
right off of Herndon A one sixty eight. And I

(00:56):
know your question, Well, what food trucks are in the
parking lot here tonight? We've got extreme shwarm of if
you want some Mediterranean food or you can go with
Taco Zi Marisco's micha Wa Khan, which is also in
the parking lot tonight. So some great food whenever you
want to drink from Crow and Wolf, and we're talking
Bulldog basketball. This is gonna be a fun show tonight
because we're talking men's hoops first and then the ladies

(01:19):
on Monday night.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
That'll be reversed.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
It'll be Ladies first at five o'clock with their season
opener against Presno Pacific. Then the Bulldog Men battle the
Sunbirds right after that at seven point thirty. You can
hear both of those on the radio. You can watch
them both on the Mountain West Network. And let's dive
right in with coach Vance Wahlberg starting year two. Coach,
what has this off season been like for you? What

(01:41):
maybe did you learn about this job, this league, this
situation last year. Do you think is going to help
you show some program improvement in year two?

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Paul, I think the biggest thing it's just the ability
to have the time to be able to recruit. You know,
first year, you came in four weeks into the portal
and it was pretty tough kind of running around not
really knowing what's going on, you know, so we planned
a lot better for the recruiting part. I think that
part really helped. And then I think just the chance
to be able to know what we want to run

(02:13):
with who we have, I think it's been real critical,
especially you know with the diverse amount of players that
we do have this year.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
You do have a diverse crew, especially geographically they represent
a lot of different countries.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Have you put it like a map on the wall.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
In your office so guys can put little pins on
where they're from.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
I'm putting little pins where I want them to come
from again next year?

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Where would that be?

Speaker 4 (02:38):
Same places?

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Well, and we'll see how many of these guys have
the kind of year that makes them want to stick
around here in the valley and get to know the
Red Wave a little bit. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
We're here at Crowing Wolf till seven o'clock. First half
of the show will be men's hoops, second half will
be the women Monday night as the season opener for
both squads. There's another game that's been creating a little
buzz that we'll talk about later November thirtieth at Selling Arena.

(03:03):
That's going to be a blast.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
But let's talk about your.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Team a little bit. Because you mentioned that roster being
very diverse. We'll go individuals in a moment, but collectively,
what do you like about this group and what do
you think fans are going to see if they come
out to the same March's Center Monday night.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
I think the biggest thing that they're going to really
enjoy is how we share the ball. This team is
so much better on making that extra pass, finding the
right person at the right time. We're getting better and better. Obviously,
you know we're going to continue to try and get
better on that, but they're really good at that, and
I think just the way we play, I think they're
going to really enjoy. We want to go up temple,

(03:40):
we want to push it. You know. The nice thing
this year is, you know, we got jayon back who's
a very quality guard, and then we got bash Seeing
and DJ Stickman, two other guards that do a great
job of passing it. And the neat thing I think
about this team is the unselfishness we have past first
three pass first point guards and then our who are

(04:00):
very unsolaced and they're very they're very very good passers.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
So the ball movement should be a little bit better.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Much much better, much better, and on top of that,
it's gonna be a lot better just for the fact
that we shoot the ball a lot better, and when
you can shoot it, you can space them a lot more.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Sometimes you can have really good ball movement and a
play drawn up perfectly and the shot doesn't go in,
and it's all.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
For not not going to see as much of that
this year.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Hopefully, guys, darn hopefully we don't. No, we've been shooting
the clip, the three pointer in practice. We record everything
at about a forty one percent clip so far this
year in practice, and I think if you remember last year,
I think the first nine or ten games we were
about twenty four percent, and we just you know, I
think for the year we might have been thirty one percent,

(04:46):
which is very very low. We want to be. I
would love to be in that thirty six. They're thirty
eight percent if we can get ourselves there.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Season opens Monday at the Save Mart Center against Fresno Pacific,
the ladies at five, the men at seven point thirty.
We're here till seven tonight, and if you've got a
question for the coach, you can come join us. You
might win some tickets. We're gonna give away some tickets here.
If you're here and you see those little blue tickets there,
grab one, tear off your side, leave the other one
in that cup, and we'll pull pick some winners at
the end of the evening.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Here here is a question that came in already on
the x app.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
This is from Fresno's Finest, and use the hashtag ask FS.
If you use that hashtag, we'll get your question to
the coach too. Fresno's Finest, says coach Wahlberg. With all
the new pieces this year, what can the Red Wave
expect from this team when we enter into Mountain West play?
And are you using that preseason Mountain West projection of
being eleventh out of twelve as motivation for this year's team.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
I don't think we need that kind of motivation. I
think the way this group is. If anybody wants to
come to practice and watch us practice, I think you've
guys see a completely different vibe out there. Very competitive.
The neat thing about this group is like we have Wilson,
who's a seven foot from France. When Wilson gets a

(06:04):
little cranky, he says some stuff. I don't know what
he says, you know, but I do know it's not
probably the best things, you know, because you can see
his competitiveness. Same thing with Gasper from Slovenia. Gasper. It's
just we got guys that really want to compete and
they know how to play the game the right way,
and I just think everybody's going to enjoy it so

(06:26):
much more.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Anybody in your family speak French, I don't think so.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
I got a Hungarian wife, so that's about the closest.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
And yet you have no players from Hungary.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
Yeah, yet.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
We're looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Monday night, seven thirty is when it all tips off
at the Save Mart Center. And you know, piggybacking on
that question that Fresno's final set in the preseason predictions
did come out this week, you know, twelve teams in
the league and you were slought at eleventh. I've got
to say, I mean, you always take preseason and predictions
with a grain of salt, but in the case of
this year, there's one guaranteed order that I know it's

(07:05):
not going to end in and that's what came out
because it was the hardest I've ever had. I vote
on that, it's the hardest I've ever had trying to
figure out who's on the All Conference, what's the order.
So many teams have brand new rosters, and even if
you know what a guy did at another school, you
don't know how they're gonna gel together and what these
teams are going to look like. I think we know

(07:26):
San Diego State's going to be good, and we've got
a pretty good idea that Utah State's gonna be good.
Boise State under Leon Rice there's been some consistency. But
outside of that, I mean, isn't it a crapshoot when
you try to size up your opposition?

Speaker 4 (07:38):
I would say you're right because to me, there's no doubt.
You know, San Diego State with everybody they have back,
plus the red shirts they had, they're loaded. I mean
they should be a top twenty five team. And Boise
State exactly what you said. In Utah State, I think
we'll both be up there. I think Grand Canyon might
be the other team up there because one the money

(07:58):
they have too, they got a phenomenal arena to play in.
I think people are going to really enjoy Our players
are going to I think have a great time there
because I think they might be one of the three
or four best arenas to play in the country the
way they do it there, and then I think from
there though, I it could be anybody. In my mind,

(08:19):
it could be a lot of different teams there. You know,
Nevada's showing some pretty good wins early in exhibition. UNLV
had a phenomenal you know, they got an influx of
a lot of money and brought in some good players.
New Mexico's New Mexico. They're always going to be solid.
So I think, you know, I'll be honest with you,
I think, you know, we can stay healthy, at least

(08:43):
healthy from now on. I think we have it. I
really think, you know, we have a chance. We can
play with a lot of different teams.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
That's what's going to be fun to watch there. You
mentioned New Mexico. They're always good, but they have zero
returning players, zero.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
And I'm happy about that.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Yeah, they were pretty loaded last year.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
We're talking to coach Vance Wahlberg and he did say
healthy from here on outs when we come back, we'll
give us give you the latest on the injury front
and what that means in the big picture for the Bulldogs. Again,
if you've got a question for coach Wahlberg or coach
Ryan McCarthy from the women's team, who's going to join
us at the bottom of the hour. Send it our
way on the XAP with that hashtag askfs.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Better yet Come hang out at Crowing Wolf. It's hopping
out here tonight.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
Food trucks are Extreme Shwarma and Tacozi Morisco's micho Wa Khan.

Speaker 3 (09:29):

Crow and Wolf.

We're hanging out inside, but a lot of folks are
hanging out outside some local running clubs.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
We're having a big party tonight.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Taco Zie Mariscos is out there with one food truck.
We got extreme shwarma the other truck. I wonder what
makes the shwarma extreme? You got any ideas, Coach, No,
you're talking to the wrong guy. Maybe they got a
little Harisa to throw on it or something sploog sauce.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
I'm gonna go check it out in a bit. We'd
love to have you come check us out. And what
we really want is to see at the same mart
Center Monday night doublehead er, the Ladies at five the
Men at seven thirty against Fresno Pacific. In fact, we've
got some tickets to give away tonight if you come
join us here at crowl and Wolf, right off of
Herndon A one sixty eight. Bulldogs aren't traveling a lot
in the non conference. But there is one bus trip

(13:35):
if you want to head out with the Timeout Club
and check out the Dogs. They're going to be down
in the San Fernando Valley on December tenth to take
on the Mattadors of Seasun. That'll be a seven o'clock
tip that night. So if you want to take that
bus with the Timeout Club, I'll give you that number. Well, Ax,
I'll give it to you right now. Just call Tim
Schiller two two five thirty one sixty four. That's of

(13:56):
course five five nine two two five thirty one sixty
for they're gonna head down there and have dinner at
the north Ridge Fashion Mall before the game against the Matadors, and.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
We'll look forward to that.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
But a lot of home games in the non conference, coach,
what are the pros and cons of that? Playing so
many home games non conference? Are there any consh?

Speaker 4 (14:16):
No, you know, last year we played quite a few
road games in preseason, so it's nice, you know, a
game some of those return games. So I think it's
nice to be able to be home, you know. Obviously,
I don't know if you got a chance to watch
Arkansas last night. They were on TV. They look pretty good. Yeah,
they look pretty darn good against Memphis and gave Memphis
a whooping on their court. But you know, again, you know,

(14:40):
just for us, you know, they're saying, you know, one
game at a time, we'd see how it goes there.
But it's it's nice to be home.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Yeah, and I mentioned north Ridge is the only true
road game, but it's a road game in Little Rock
when you're playing the Hogs, even if it's a quote
unquote neutral site. And that's gonna be a fun one
against your friend John Caliperry. But we'll talk about that later.
Let's talk about the roster because you said as long
as we stay healthy from here, the implication in there
is that you're not one hundred percent healthy right now.

(15:08):
And there has been a development this week with a
young player you have high hopes for.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
Fill us in on what the latest is there.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
Yeah, it was a tough one. On Saturday. We are
down at Santa Barbara and Nathan julimy r. Six' four combo,
guard tough as heck in in our. Practices he's been
leading us in scoring, second in rebounds, first, second assist,

(15:35):
first and steels, first and tips and he went he's
done for the. Season he had torn acl On, saturday
which was a kind of a tough. Break nothing just
kind of planting his foot harder than it seems like
normal and his knee. Buckled and we got THE mri
On monday night and found out, that you, know he's

(15:58):
done for the, year because you, know he's he's probably
the toughest player we have on the team and probably
the most. Athletic but, again what happened, is you, know
the nice thing this year is we have a lot more,
depth so it's going to give a chance for other
players a step.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
Up, yeah and you got a chance to see him
a little bit in the scrimmage against Cal Poly so
this last, weekend the Scrimmaging Santa barbara down there at The.
Thunderdome this injury. Occurred now we'll have a whole year
to get ready for next. Year and you, say, talented,
physical he was probably gonna be one of your best

(16:34):
on ball, defenders.

Speaker 4 (16:35):
Our, best not even a. Question he was probably our.
Best you, know he's got. That he had that dog
attitude in which you absolutely. Love you, know he loves
to shut people down and just get after a really good,
competitor you. Know so hopefully in about two weeks they're
going to schedule the surgery and you, know get him
back healthy, Hopefully.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
And like you, said there is some depth, there and
let's talk about that roster a little. Bit you said
he's got a little dog in. Him that reminds me
if you've got a, dog you can bring him here
To Crowing. Wolf we've got a few dogs in the house.
Tonight they're very well behaved so. Far so if your
dog can follow that same, pattern bring him out here
To Crowing. Wolf we're here till seven o'clock and we'll
give away some tickets at that point for the men's

(17:16):
and women's doubleheader opener On monday. Night that's coming, Fast monday,
Night november, third the ladies at, five the guys at
seven point. Thirty, so you, know last year you had
a similar development right before the start of the season
when you found Out Macon jeof would be. Unavailable it
wasn't an injury, situation but an eligibility. Issue now he's,

(17:36):
eligible he's getting. Healthy how much can he bring to the,
Table because we talked about him last, year but fans
never got to see him in. Action what are your
expectations for his versatile game fitting into your team this.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Year he's he could be a very special. Player you,
know you don't find too many six, ten six eleven
guys you can go inside. Outside he's one of those
type of. Players you, know he'll come up from the weak,
side he'll block a. Site you, go, wow where'd that come?
From you. Know my biggest thing with, him and he
knows it is just getting that motor moving all the.

(18:09):
Time but he's going to probably start On monday. Again
it's nice to have the six, ten six eleven, wing
so you, know we're going to see how he.

Speaker 3 (18:19):
Develops i'm looking forward to an.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Action i've seen him in practice and a little scrimmage,
action but not in a real. Game so that'll Be
monday night when he makes his bulldog. Debut And you've
got a lot of guys making their bulldog, debuts Like
jake High, breeder who's Some bulldog fans remember from his
time at Air. Force he's been in THE acc now
With clemson back here in The WESTERN, US a veteran
who still has. Eligibility he's a grad student, already but

(18:43):
he can play this year and next year and in
your scrimmage against Cal, poly he knocked down nine three,
pointers six of them in the second. Half how special
of a shooter can he be for your team this?

Speaker 4 (18:55):
Year he is very, special you, know done this for
a long time in the college ranks AND jc in high.
School he's probably one of the top two Shooters i've ever.
Coached he's. Special he is very. Special not only is
he a really good, SHOOTER i think that makes him
so phenomenal as he's probably the best Cutter i've coached

(19:16):
in all my. Years it doesn't matter what, level he's
by far the best, cutter you. KNOW i think a
lot of that has to do with his own two.
THINGS i think one obviously playing for a really good.
Coach you, know at Air, force they know how to,
play you, know that's their, game AND i think. Yep
AND i think the second THING i would say is
just he's in just phenomenal, shape so he can he

(19:37):
just constantly. Moved you, know one second is, here then he's.
Gone he just knows how to change the pace and
he's really really good at. That SO i think it's
it's gonna be. Fun you. Know we're working on some
things right, now how to get him a few more
shots Against Santa barbara when he got eleven. Shots me,
personally i'd like to see at least ten threes a
game go up from. Him Santa barbara did a really

(19:59):
good job that you, know he was two for five that,
game but we WE i got to find a way
to get him a lot more.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
Shots what about his leadership as a guy who's got
more college basketball experience than most of the guys on your.

Speaker 4 (20:11):
Squad he's A he's a quiet. Leader he's a leader by.
Example he's not going to be one out there to
say do, this do. That he will quietly talk to
the players that. Way but they all respect the heck
out of. Them, again he's just one of those. Players you.
Know his individual workout time is you, KNOW i believe
eleven ten to eleven forty gets a half hour, in

(20:32):
but he wants to come in. Early he gets in
there at six thirty in the morning to get more shots.
Up AND i think the more that the, players you,
know the players that we, have we got a whole
lot of them that do the same. Thing AND i
think that's WHY i think the enthusiasm for how much
better we're going to get this.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
Year you, know some people are, listening and they were
listening closely enough to hear you say That jake Hid
breeders in the top two shooters you've ever. Coached SO
i have to ask the follow up, question are you
only saying that because your, Son jason sitting over there
and you coached him in high? School or was there
someone else that you had in mind that you'd put
in that top.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
Two, no my son was a pretty good. Shooter i'm
not going to deny THAT i can't put him in
the top. Two it'll probably yelped me later. On the
KID i had At Colvis fest played At Tanna, Barbera
Cole anderson was a very special. Shooter he was a.

Speaker 11 (21:21):
Very Special jason in the top five for. You, yes
he's In, okay, five he's in the top. Five IF
i don't say, That i'm in trouble WHEN i get. Home,
no well he.

Speaker 4 (21:31):
Is he could shoot. It he could definitely shoot.

Speaker 5 (21:34):
It.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Well we saw That Fresno City college and At Saint
mary's and probably if if he wanted to play horse right,
Now i'm sure he could bang down a few as.
Well oh, yeah some creative. Spots time for another. Break
we're here with Coach Vance. Wahlberg we'll talk more about the,
schedule the, roster what you can look forward to in
this new, season and how about that game At Selling

opponent for both. Squads so that's going to be a
fun night on The battle Of Chestnut, avenue even if
it doesn't.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
Go all the way. Through we're talking with Coach Vance.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
Wahlberg if you've got a question for, him you can
send it away on the x app use that hashtag
ask fs and we'll pass it. On, COACH i want
to talk to you more about your Roster fresno's finest
asking who injured HIS Acl, well it's Freshman nathan or
as he says, It Natan zulimi From, france who is

(26:24):
out for the year with a knee.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Injury, yeah let's.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
Talk about some of your other, guys, coach because this
is a deep, roster as you've pointed, out and there
are some other guys with division one. Experience we talked
About jake Hid breed or the, sharpshooter another guy who
can kind of be a glue guy for. You it
seems it has a really good stroke from the. Perimeter
Cameron foss transfer over from The kangaroos Of Missouri Kansas.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
City what did you like about his game and the recruiting.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
Season, Well cam actually played for one of our, Assistants,
kristahouski in junior, college And chris told, me you, know
that he was going to be a grad. Senior so
we took a look at him him and talk with you,
know he was coached By Marvin, menzies AND i Know
marvin very, well and marvinstis, said he's a phenomenal young.
Man and the THING i like about, him he's got

(27:10):
a really nice. Stroke he can really shoot the. Three
also a good strong. Kid he's you, know he's that
kind of six six. Tweiner he's not a super athletic
big or he's not a, guard but he can really
shoot the ball and he's got that. Toughness and again
he's a grad. Senior you, know last, Year, paul we

(27:32):
really struggled with the youth that we, had how young we.
Were so it was really nice to have a couple
of grad seniors And, Cam cam And Jake gibbs that
opportunity to have that experience out on that.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
Floor you, KNOW i brought up the nine threes That
Hide breeder made against Cal. Pauly you mentioned he made
a couple AGAINST ucsb down In Gaucho land this last.
Weekend so surely Our Time out club president this year
wants to know about some more statistics from those games
and how those games. Unfolded how much did you learn
about your squad by scrimmaging those neighboring.

Speaker 4 (28:05):
Schools, well Cal poly was a unique, one and that
they play a completely different. Style they're up and, down
they're gonna they want to shoot as quick as they,
can kind of reminiscence of the old Loyal marimund, days you.
Know and they jumped on us pretty. Quick they got
up twenty two in the first, half and we came
back and went up, ten probably four minutes into the second.

(28:29):
Half had a NICE i think like thirty six to
four run. There Santa barbara really shoots that out of the.
Ball Santa barbara gave us a nice little whooping combination
of a lot of different. Things they went nineteen for
thirty eight from the. Three they shot fifty percent from the.
THREE i think we were six for like twenty three

(28:50):
somewhere around. There but just experimenting with different things we
want to see how some of the press would work
and so, forth and you know those things that we're
working on right.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
Now getting ready For monday Night Fresno, pacific the season,
opener and a non conference schedule loaded with home. Games
got to be a lot of opportunities for you to
catch the, dogs including one On november thirtieth at Selland
arena against Coach wahlberg's alma, mater the Road runners OF
Csu bakersfield. Coach since that got announced maybe a week

(29:22):
or two, ago a week and a half, AGO i
guess how much feedback have you? Gotten because you're around
this community a, Lot you've been here a long. Time
you know a lot of. People what kind of buzz
have you heard about that opportunity your team Has november.

Speaker 4 (29:33):
Thirtieth it's a great. Opportunity you know a lot of.
People you, know we're trying to hit up a lot
of the alumni to come. BACK i, know you KNOW
i was. HERE i hate to tell, YOU i actually
played in Sand arena way. Back we Played Fresno state
back and before you were ever, Born, paul that's.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
TRUE i was born in seventy. Six, okay, now, wait,
no what you probably played That october last week my, Birthday.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
So you know what you were about? Them maybe a
month old when we played?

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Him, well, NO i guess because That october you wouldn't
have been. Playing oh, yeah, okay So NOVEMBER i was
a month. Old, okay, yeah and that was against That gregory's.

Speaker 4 (30:15):
Last gregory's last. Team we actually Beat Reresnel state twice
that Year State pickersfield. Did then the following Year boyd
came in and end up they got us by a
few of that game. There but, no IT'S i think it's.
Neat you, Know i've always enjoyed Sell. ARENA i know
When tark was, HERE i was in town getting a

(30:36):
chance to watch all those, games and just the energy
that was in that building during that. Time it was
it was fun to.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
See OH i can't wait to see how Many alumps
come back and how Many Red waivers come.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
Back maybe they've stayed away for a.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
WHILE i think the hope, is As i've Heard Garrett
classy talk about it And Jerry dyer and others that you,
know fans will come to that game and see what
you have going and then want to follow you back
to The Save Mart center for a conference schedule that's
going to be demanding this. Year you mentioned earlier the
addition Of Grand. CANYON i think that's going to be
fun to see in addition to all these other, rivalries
and some of these are going to be the last

(31:08):
time That Fresno state plays a school in conference teams
Like New mexico And Nevada San Jose. State even THAT'S i,
mean there's a lot to look forward to this. Year
i'm sure some fans want to hear a little more
about your. Roster you mentioned. EARLIER Dj, stickman a local.
RECRUIT i can see him being a really good defender

(31:28):
and boyd off the. Ground how about some other guys
Like DeShawn, gory for. INSTANCE i, mean he's a little
intriguing to me with his. Athleticism he looks like he
brings some versatility to the.

Speaker 4 (31:40):
Game DeShawn DOES i think. THAT i really think The
Red waves going to enjoy watching. Dishon he's a high energy,
player sometimes too. High you, know he wants to do
everything right, away but, again each game he's been out
there doing just what he does really. Well he runs a.
Flora you, know he's on. ME i think He's he's

(32:04):
not very, thick but he's, wiry but, boy he uses his.
Length he's got a nice. Wingspan he's about a six
to ten, wingspan and he uses that and he flies
up and down the. Court the other guy WHO i
think goes up and down the court really well Was Gaspar.
Kosovar he's From, SLOVENIA. G we call HIM. G he's another.

(32:25):
ONE i think both him And deshina are going to
kind of play our three spot out there is our,
three kind of our runner that we want to be
able to get down the. Floor and that they both
got pretty good, Wills so pretty pleased with. Them and
Then i'll tell you what the other person who's been
coming along for. Us you, Know wilson's very solid. Inside
he's a very solid player. Inside But Jock moni Again

(32:51):
Santa barbara came off the bench and had sixteen points
in about four twelve or thirteen. Minutes you, know he's
another one who can shoot the ball pretty. Well so
it's gonna be.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Fun you're gonna have a lot of guys on the
floor at once that can, shoot which could give some defenses.
Problems speaking at giving people, Problems we're gonna talk About
mayhem and the women's team here in a second with
a guy who just walked. In but one more, question,
coach because we're talking all of this about offense and ball,
movement and people want to know what your defensive side

(33:21):
of the floor is going to look like this year.
Too what gives you hope that your team can defend
in The Mountain west the way you're gonna need.

Speaker 4 (33:28):
TO i think we're a lot smarter than we were last.
Year so for, us we're not the most athletic, defensively
but if we can learn how to play, ANGLES i
think we'll be a lot. Better AND i think they're
gonna be a lot better playing the angles. DEFENSIVELY i.
Know you, know the nice thing is you've got a

(33:49):
seven foot behind. You you, Know wilson does a great
job of being in the, plant being in the paint
and taking up a lot of. Room AND i think
our wiriness AND i think some of the smart that we.
Have jake knows how to read angles really. Well you,
Know like you, SAID dj Stick men And deshauna both
long on, Defense so we're kind of hoping we can
put a little bit of pressure that. WAY i got

(34:10):
a chance to watch the girls. Play the ladies play
the other, night and they do play, defense they get after.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
It they only for thirty eight, turnovers, coach is that?

Speaker 4 (34:19):
It? Yeah, no they they do a heck of a.
Job it was a lot of fun to watch.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
Them, well and before you check out and enjoy the
rest of the evening here with your, Wife, rose looks
like she started eating without you over.

Speaker 12 (34:30):
There.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
Rose, OKAY i can tell that you and coach McCarthy
have already developed a friendship and a, rapport And i'm
sure you guys have geeked out on hoops a little.
Bit what do you appreciate about coach McCarthy in the
little time you've been around, him and what has you
fired up about What bulldog women's basketball fans are going
to see this?

Speaker 4 (34:50):
Year, well you know WHAT i love more Than. Ryan
ryan does WHAT i would love to be able to,
do you, know and then he just presses all game
AND i love. That to, me that's my favorite style of. Playing,
now you got to have some of the, pieces you,
know on the guy's, side it's a little bit tougher
because if you make a mistake on the guys, side
they're going to nail a. Three you, know on the.

(35:12):
Girl on the lady's, SIDE i think you can get
away with a little bit. More but they're watching. Them you,
KNOW i pop in their practice here and, there just
watched five ten, minutes fifteen minutes here and, there and
just the INTENSITY i absolutely. Love and then the other,
THING i think it's kind of. Neat he's got a
group of ladies who really love the game and they

(35:34):
along with And i'm same with our, guys BUT i
just like the way they interact with each. Other it's
just neat to see.

Speaker 2 (35:42):
That it really is some new energy in the women's.
Program coach McCarthy is joining us. NOW i Guess i'll
ask you, Too coach, McCarthy getting to Know Coach, wahlberg
being around, him having this kind of team approach to
basketball And, fresno whether it's guys or the, ladies how
is that welcome felt for you as you get to
know our community in the basketball culture.

Speaker 16 (36:03):
Here, WELL i, think, first you, Know Coach wahlberg's renown
in this. Area and you, KNOW i knew About Coach
wahlberg BEFORE i met him because his you, know, uh
dribble drive. Offense and then obviously before, THAT i knew
about his press and so you, know he's he's a
legend in this game AND i AND i don't say

(36:25):
that just because he's sitting, here but this guy has
won more games than THAN i Think i've ever been associated.
With so you, know his staff and, him there's one
thing that just stands.

Speaker 4 (36:36):
Out and they're just so. Kind you, know they've they've
been very welcoming to.

Speaker 16 (36:40):
Us Missus wahlberg makes some of the best chocolate chip
cookies That i've ever, had so shout out To rose.

Speaker 4 (36:48):
There but you, know they've.

Speaker 16 (36:49):
Just been so kind and and that's been a big
part of WHAT i think has made the valley really
special to me and my. Family have you played pick
a ball with him? Yet, NO i gotta get up
my game even mess with this guy and. Pickleball, yeah, well.

Speaker 2 (37:04):
We're going to take the next twenty minutes or so
talk to coach McCarthy Coach. Wahlberg this one more question
just came in on the x app using that hashtag
ask fs and a few of you have questions For
coach McCarthy sent him our. Way but, again that same,
Follower Fresno's finest wants to know if you EXPECT Dj
stickman to make an impact this year as a true,
freshman given that he's been in your system At Clobus,

(37:25):
west maybe a little more familiar with some of the
things you want to.

Speaker 4 (37:28):
Do, yes not even a. Question you, know WITH dj,
ATHLETICALLY i don't think you're going to see too many
more better athletes THAN. DJ i don't care in the,
league you, know in the in The Mountain. West he's
a phenomenal athlete and obviously known the WAY i like
to see things. Done and THEN i think the great
part about him, is you, know we have a lot of,

(37:50):
Coaches Coach welch And ray And. Tyler they do a great. Job.
Individually he has really picked, up you, know the ball
handling skills that he needs to be able to pick.
Up and so you, KNOW i originally my plan was
to red shirt, him but he's not. Redshirting he's going
to be part of our plan this.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Year, well we're looking forward to a coach and joy
the rest of the night here At Cohen wolf and

Us the rest of the women's basketball shows will be
hosted by our Friend Matt, norvil who will call all
coach McCarthy's games this year And. COACH i heard from

(42:35):
a few people who went Out, WEDNESDAY i Mean sunday
against You seemer said they, said, boy that team really
likes to play. Defense thirty eight. TURNOVERS i know you're
playing a lower division, school but what do you set
the bar at for the number of takeaways that you're
trying to create with your mayhem style on game?

Speaker 16 (42:55):
Days, YEAH i, MEAN i don't think that will be
the standard moving or to, be BUT i definitely think you,
know one one stat we do keep track of is,
deflections and that doesn't always lead to, turnovers but we
have studied fourteen years of basketball in our, program and

(43:15):
when we have thirty five or more deflections in a,
game we're. Undefeated so that that and as long As
i've ever been a, coach it's it's a two foot dog.
Bone and we've talked about the law of the, alley
which is the hungriest dog gets the. Bone and when
the player that leads the team in deflections for a
game in which we. Win they put the number of

(43:37):
deflections they, had the, date the score of the, game
and the winner of the dog. Bone we put it
in the case at the end of the. Year make
it a big, deal and the winner of the dog
bone is the one that has the most deflections for the.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
YEAR i like.

Speaker 2 (43:50):
That so it's it's always been a dog bound dog
bone even became before you became a.

Speaker 3 (43:55):
Bulldog, yeah, okay see maybe it was meant to.

Speaker 4 (43:59):
Be it wasn't meant To, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (44:00):
And you're talking about our.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
Program you're talking about the great success you had At
Alaska anchorage before you came, here and you brought some
players from that program. Here how big a difference does
that make to have some of that, familiarity that, continuity
to have players showing other players versus just coaches teaching.

Speaker 3 (44:19):
PLAYERS i think.

Speaker 16 (44:20):
A lot of it's, important especially on a cultural. Standpoint you,
know those those players that came From alaska probably lost
twelve games in their whole, career and you know they're
coming here and they have winning habits and they're in
the gym all the. Time they're the ones kind of
setting the tone for conditioning and those types of. Things
AND i, think you, know the biggest part THAT i

(44:41):
think that our team has learned from them is the
way they serve their. Team and that's that's one thing
THAT i think we're continuing to try to emphasize with
our ladies is you, know to be able to for
us to be where we need to, be the leaders
on the team need to be able to serve the
rest of. Them AND i AND i think that our
ladies From alaska have done a good out of.

Speaker 3 (45:00):
That how do you get that across?

Speaker 2 (45:03):
That because that today's world has such a contrary, mentality,
RIGHT i, mean all we ever hear is make your own,
rules be your own, person think about. You social media
puts that on. Steroids to have a counter cultural value
system in your, program so to, speak how do you
do that in twenty twenty five Because i'm guessing it's
a little different today than probably when you started.

Speaker 4 (45:25):
Coaching, yeah you, know kids have changed a.

Speaker 16 (45:28):
LOT i think every five years we see this like
huge leap in to you, know something different than what
we thought it was. Before and you, know we we
stole that culture from the military and obviously In anchorage
we had the largest Joint army air force base in the,
country and we would meet with them a.

Speaker 4 (45:48):
Lot and one thing that, was.

Speaker 16 (45:52):
You, know consistent with the really good leaders or the
guys that were in charge of you, know these big
battalions are like a special forces. Unit you know WHEN
i you, know when when did you feel like you
would get your? Team and it was always when they
would stir the you know. What so when you leave
a camp and you got to burn all your stuff
and you got to get out there and stir, it
and usually it would be you, know with someone like

(46:12):
the petty officers or something like, that or more of
the grunt, work and when the head guy was out
there doing it with him and serving, him that's when
he felt that he would have his. Team And i've
talked with that a lot about you, know when we
were At, uaa the laundry was done by the, captains
and in our, program the highest honor that you can
earn is to be a. Captain AND i think when

(46:35):
you start getting that servant leadership and you reward it from,
WITHIN i think everybody starts pulling the rope in the
same direction that.

Speaker 2 (46:42):
Way, well AND i have to ask the follow up,
question which is does that extend to coaches. Too are
there things that you and your wife are are doing
and the rest of your coaching staff because your wife
is on your Staff for those who don't know to
kind of model that servant LEADERSHIP, Ida so it's not
just the.

Speaker 4 (47:01):
Players, yeah we started off with.

Speaker 16 (47:03):
Food my, wife she's a pretty good, cook but we're
really good at ordering. Food and so we always we
always at the beginning of every, year you, know we
get the team, over we give, them you, know we
serve them, food we play games with, them you, know
get to know them on that social. Level every year
we like to do like this video scavenger. Hunt so

(47:23):
it may be like pump a gas for a stranger
or an awkward family, Pitcher AND i just think it's
a good way to kind of get, everybody you, know
out of their comfort zone a little bit and things like.
That but you, know one THING i always tell the
ladies is, that you, know anytime you want to work,
out anytime you, know you want to come in and
watch game film or anything like, that, like we are
here to serve. You this is our. Job it's what

(47:45):
we're paid to. Do and so that's one area from
the basketball. Side but it's also if you you know
you're having a bad, day you went through a, breakup you,
know we have some really strong women on staff that
can you, know help guide you through those moments in your,
life you, know growing up as a young, woman and
you know THAT'S i think the culture of our staff is,
that you, know we're there to serve our.

Speaker 5 (48:04):
Team you.

Speaker 2 (48:06):
Know hearing you say, THAT i think about the dynamic
that maybe we don't talk about as. Much sometimes there's
an unspoken maybe threshold that one of the greatest women's
coaches of all time is a, Man Geno, arima, right
a lot of other all time great women's, Coaches but
in recent years we've seen kind of reduction of men

(48:26):
coaching women's sports in. College what is it about the
women's game that you've enjoyed so much and obviously wanted
to stay on that side of. It some guys, say,
No i'm going to go from the women's, side AND
i want to coach on the men's. Side what is
it about the women's game that you've been drawn to so?

Speaker 16 (48:42):
Much you, know the thing with women That i've grown
to really enjoy over the last couple of years specifically
is you, know their willingness to really buy into a
culture they don't seem to, have like this ambition to,
become you, know a millionaire in, basketball and they're there

(49:04):
like they understand that there's this. Time AND i think
on the men's, side you, know they're jumping, around they're
trying to go. Pro you, know there's a lot more
glory involved in like the external factors and the. Women
you're you're really not worried about someone leaving after their
freshman year to go to the W, Nba like you're
getting somebody for four.

Speaker 4 (49:21):
Years you're getting this.

Speaker 16 (49:22):
Investment and THEN i think like the pleasing, part like you,
know you run a, play run a play for a
guy who's gonna break it off and be like, coach,
WELL i was. OPEN i was trying to you, Know i'm.

Speaker 4 (49:31):
Gonna go get.

Speaker 16 (49:32):
Mine and for the, girls they may be, open but
they're going to run that play all the way, through
even though we had a wide open layup because that's
what the coach. Said so you, Know i've enjoyed that
part and and we get little gifts at the end
of the. Year you, KNOW i think the transformation is
a really cool part of. It but WHEN i was,
YOUNGER i, thought oh, YEAH i want to coach, men.

Speaker 4 (49:52):
And THEN i got to see.

Speaker 16 (49:53):
It i'm, like, MAN i just don't know If i've
got the energy to be an alpha dog that that, long,
Right like enjoyed talking about our day and you know
what went on in class and those, things LIKE i
enjoy that part of it a.

Speaker 2 (50:06):

men's show will Be november. Nineteenth we'll have a women's
basketball show here On december.

Speaker 3 (53:44):
Fourth coach McCarthy.

Speaker 2 (53:46):
From the women's team here now getting ready for that
season Opener monday night at Five and, coach when it
comes to the talent on your squad this, year for
someone who hasn't seen your team play, yet they didn't
make it to that exhibition against, you teamer said the other,
day how do you describe what.

Speaker 3 (54:02):
They're going to see on the.

Speaker 4 (54:03):
Floor, well we're gonna play. HARD i know.

Speaker 16 (54:06):
THAT i think from a talent, standpoint we've got a
lot to. Prove you, know nobody on this staff when
when when we got, hired it was so late in
the transfer portal that the you, know the leading score
and the transfer. Portal we ended up signing and she
averaged seven points a game on a six win. Team
SO i, mean this is the land of the misfit,
toys so to. Speak BUT i think there's something unique about,

(54:29):
that and they do have a chip on their.

Speaker 4 (54:31):
Shoulder they're gonna go.

Speaker 16 (54:32):
Compete you have Some division two players that are making
the jump To Division, one AND i mean in our last,
game they they proved that they can do. This our
three leading scorers were all from the same school, previously
so you, Know i'm excited about. It we have we
have good depth at the post. Position we have some
some very good defenders out on the, perimeter and then

(54:55):
we've got a pretty good little shooter From washington And
Ava marr who had a good little game for us
and hit three threes in the second half and kind
of busted the game open for. Us so you, Know
i'm excited about what we can, be but we still
have a lot to.

Speaker 2 (55:07):
PROVE i remember when you came here to be introduced
as the new head, coach and you talked about the
late Great Jerry tarkanian and his amoeba defense and the
influence that it had on your coaching. Style but when
did you come up with the term mayhem to describe
what was.

Speaker 16 (55:23):
Happening so about the same year we started playing The
amiba in twenty thirteen fourteen in an exhibition game Against
Kansas state when they had just won The big twelve
and we were going to put it in on out
of bounds plays and you, know before that we knew
we were going to. Press and my favorite team in
the country at that point in time WAS vcu and

(55:45):
whose head coach Was Shaka, smart and he ran a
system Called, havoc and SO i saw that the way
that it changed that, program it changed the.

Speaker 4 (55:54):
Way people thought ABOUT.

Speaker 16 (55:56):
Vcu it kind of became this like phenomenon and in college,
basketball and it just caught. Fire AND i, thought, man
we could do that on the women's. Side you, know
if we got a group to play together and full
court press and kind of make the game exciting that,
way it could really draw some attention to women's, basketball
and in particular our.

Speaker 3 (56:13):
Program SO i just called.

Speaker 2 (56:15):
It they AM i was wondering if you were looking
for like the endorsement contract With All State insurance or
something like.

Speaker 16 (56:22):
THAT i was in proloween when here, actually oh, really,
yeah we have.

Speaker 2 (56:27):
To find the pictures of. That But i'm on social.
Media speaking of social, Media Fresno finus has given us
some good questions. Tonight he's listening and heard you say
that you and your wife are good at ordering.

Speaker 3 (56:38):
Food so he used.

Speaker 2 (56:39):
The hashtag ask fs to ask What's coach McCarthy's favorite
food spots In.

Speaker 16 (56:44):

Say seyson is the first place in. rBook that place
is pretty, good and then not too far down the
street Is.

Speaker 4 (56:57):
Heirloom and we've Doortached.

Speaker 16 (56:59):
Heirloom more THAN i care to admit right. Now so but,
yeah there's some really good. PLACES i, mean recruiting is easy.
Here when you're going, out you're basically going to meals
all the, time you. KNOW i, say we got a
couple of good hot spots, though but those two are
at the top of my.

Speaker 2 (57:14):
List can't go, wrong and you can't go wrong here
At Crowing wolf tonight either with the tacozy. Mariscos in,
fact they even have our. Chata thank You holly for

Speaker 16 (57:36):
Talking you, Know i'm, excited you, know just to get
this thing. Going AND i think that you, know when
you come to our, game obviously you're going to see
a certain. Style and you know WHAT i want people
to see as a group that you, know plays, together
plays hard and regardless of the, outcome you, know is
playing like they're never out of the. Fight but i
also want people to join the. Party And i've talked

(58:00):
with you, know, yes last NIGHT i was At greek
role and talking to the fraternities there and trying to
get them at our. Games i've already met with the,
band the head of the head of the, band AND
i actually after This i'm driving back over to The
marching band field to go talk with their students. There
but you, know this is the last level of sports

(58:21):
where you have a band and you have a student,
section and it's not just going to be about the
x's AND osa, Basketball LIKE i want them to fully
embrace this.

Speaker 2 (58:28):
University, well if you're looking for some, CHARACTERS i saw

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
