(00:23):
Cheers your host, the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Welcome to the Bulldog Basketball Hour.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
We got a packed house inside Crow and Wolf tonight,
and the Christmas spirit is in the house. Big Christmas
tree almost wait all the way to the ceiling in
one corner on the inside. Outside, the food trucks are
here tonight. Where's the food is one of the selections
in ninety nine Craft Pizza with a special holiday menu.

(00:51):
One of their pizzas even has pomegranate on it.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Coach vans Wahlberg, have you ever tried pomegranate pizza before?

Speaker 4 (01:00):
No? I don't think I have.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
How do you feel about pomegranate in general?

Speaker 4 (01:06):
I think I had it, had it maybe about fifteen
years ago one time. I'm not a big fan.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
All right, Well, who knows? Maybe some of it'll make
its way over here. We're at Crowing Wolf, just off
to Herndon in one sixty eight, and great chance for
you to come stop in, talk some Bulldog basketball, maybe
win some Bulldog basketball tickets. The Dogs are home Saturday
at two against the Lancers of CBU. You'll hear that

(01:33):
game right here with the pregame at one thirty on Saturday,
and you can still get tickets at go Bulldogs dot
com or just come by. Maybe you're out Christmas shopping
you need a break, head over to Crowing Wolf. Told
you what the food trucks are. Where's the food and
ninety nine Craft Pizza. You can come inside, get whatever
you want to drink, and stop by our table in
the corner and we'll have some free Bulldog basketball tickets

(01:53):
for you. How's that the Christmas spirit? It's everywhere and
Coach Wahlberg is here. We'll be joined a little while
later by Pierre Jenessee Junior, who returned to action this
last Saturday and made a big difference in the ballgame.
In fact, it was our bulldog player the game afterwards.
So Pierre is going to join us here as well,
and we'd love to have you join us there's a

(02:15):
few seats left inside, and if you have to elbow
somebody out of the way, just do it. So coach,
first of all, congrats on getting back in the win column.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
I know that had to feel a lot of good
on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
The way you guys persevered down by five and a half,
you win by eight and reverse momentum a little bit
because you had a tough road in some tough situations
we did.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
And again you said earlier about Pierre being the player
of the game. I think Pierre was a very big
spark in that game. Again, just my type of player.
He's going to do whatever it takes to win. He'll rebound,
he'll die for a loose ball, whatever you ask.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Pete does that.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
And it's great to have, you know, players like that.
You know, when we can are putting three, four or
five of those players on the floor at the same time,
I think you're gonna see some special teams.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
You know what I loved about it when you have
a guy like that who just had hand surgery, who's
out there with you can only see two of his
fingers because everything else is all taped and splinted up,
and so you know who else has any excuses. If
that guy's out there getting rebounds, blocking shots and even
making free throws, that's his shooting hand and his form
looked even better with that hand than all five fingers.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
Yes it did. And honestly, again, I'm just so happy
for Pete. He's like, he's one of the hardest workers
we have. He's got a great attitude. Again, like I said,
he'll do anything that takes to win. And you know,
if those are the special type of players, is he
the most skilled. No, but boy, what a heart, you know.
I think for a lot of people don't realize. One

(03:51):
of the biggest skills that people don't realize his effort
and heart. And he has that.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
And we'll be talking to him a little bit later
on Pierre Jeanne stage. If he can fit through the
door at Crow and Wolf, he's gonna sit down with
coach Wahlberg in the corner over here.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
So we'd love to have you join us as well.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
We've got some Bulldog fans from the Time Out Club
er here tonight sharing their Christmas spirit and we'd like
to see you too.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Crow and Wolf just off a Herndred and one sixty eight.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
We're here till seven o'clock tonight, and we do have
Bulldog basketball tickets to give away. We'll talk about that
rematch with CBU that's coming up Saturday at two, a
double overtime game the first time around. But that San
Diego game, you know I mentioned getting back in the wind, Callum,
you guys really haven't been able to play at home
all that much. You're now three and one at home,

(04:36):
so the Save Mart Center has had a home court advantage.
But when you're down five at the break and you've
got a losing streak and you feel the weight of
that momentum, what did you see that shifted that that
put your team in gear and helped get you guys
over the hump.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
I think it was just more of the whole whole
team effort. I thought we settled, didn't We didn't settle
for some quick, you know, tough shots at times. I
thought we moved the ball a lot better. And again
just the persistence of getting to that free full line.
I think we were up. I think it was like
twenty six to ten on the free full line. Was
our advantage something like that, And we can keep attacking,

(05:15):
but attack, and I only look the score up, but
attack and trying to find the open man. I think
we'll be so much better.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
There are a lot of things that were welcome sites
in that game. Another one of them was to see
Alex Crawford aggressive offensively. He only missed one shot in
the entire game, if I remember right, he was eight
of nine from the floor, and it's not like they
were all easy shots, but he was confident aggressive. How
much of that is him just getting closer to one
hundred percent physically.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
It's a big part. And he's about you know, again
this week he's been out. You know, we kind of
kept him out of the full full court stuff. He's
been going on the half court. He's got some loose
some loose stuff on his knee, so he's not there
all the way. But again, his effort of attack and
the hoop was such a big difference for us. When

(06:03):
he can do that, and then you get Zayon doing
his thing and Mike colspacing the floor and so forth,
it gives us a lot more weapons. And then it's
been really nice, you know, only seniors Jayalen Weaver in
the last two games. I think Jaydon's done a very
good job. He's starting to get his feel back. Plus
his ankle's getting better too. You know, he's getting closer
about eighty five ninety percent, so you can just see

(06:26):
in practice how much better he's moving.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Well, that's a really good sign, and we'll talk about that.
With regard to the challenge you have coming up Saturday
at two against a really good point guard for the
CBU Lancers. We're talking to coach Vance Wahlberg. It's the
bulldog Basketball Hour here at Crowing Wolf. Where there's something
else I should mention. It's not just bulldogs as in
basketball players who are welcome here. Dogs are welcome, and
I've seen about five or six of them already who

(06:51):
are all behaving themselves very well.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
So if you've got a.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Dog and you don't want to leave him at home,
bring him on out here to Crow and Wolf. Get
some of that great ninety nine craft pizza out or
something from Where's the Food, and come talk some bulldog hoops.
We might have some free bulldog tickets for you. So
Alex Crawford had a big game. You just mentioned Jalen
Weaver and you also made a reference to MIKEL Robinson
who in that game didn't make a bucket. Was zero

(07:15):
for eight, but he did a lot of things that
helped your team win. And some of that, I guess
the best way to describe it from my view, maybe
you have a different way of explaining it.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
It's just his vision.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Because he had a couple of passes where you have
to know where you're going with the ball before it
even gets to you in order to make the pass
that he may.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
If Mike Keel has kind of become our second point guard,
point forward, whatever you want to call it, if Zayon
doesn't have the ball in his hands, we definitely like
to see that Mike Kels because again, he's somebody who's
going to make, most of the time make pretty darn
good decisions. And I think he's our second leading assists
player behind Zayon. So he knows how to play the
game and he enjoys making that extra pass, which is

(07:56):
nice to have.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
And some of that too, come down to reps together,
time on the floor together, a feel for guys instincts,
regardless of what the offense you're running is. Sometimes it's
just a feel on how these guys operate, how they move,
where they're going to be. Do you notice a difference
in how much better your players know each other's games

(08:18):
at this point than they did coming in blind a
couple months ago.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
But totally, I mean, we're still figuring out. I don't
think what a lot of people understand. I don't.

Speaker 5 (08:28):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
If we've had six of our top nine players and
maybe in today was practice number forty nine, I think
maybe we've had six of our top nine maybe three
times in the forty nine practices. So it's been really
tough to get that cohesive miss, you know, them knowing
how to play with each other. In fact, we probably

(08:50):
had about fifteen maybe twenty, and these fifteen practices with
six of the top nine not even being able to practice,
So it's been a little tough that way, but you
know a little bit a little we're starting to get
a little bit more healthy, which is nice. Knock on wood,
hope they stay healthy.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Amen Saturday at two o'clock is when they need to
be healthy. The next game after that will be a
week later and that's the return to Mountain West play.
So this Saturday, two o'clock at the Save Mart Center
against CBU is the last non conference game for Fresno
State on the hardwood this year.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
It's also a FCA.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
Day at the Save Marts Center, and there are some
special ticket deals on that if you check it out online,
go Bulldogs dot com to buy your tickets, or come
here to Crowling Wolf tonight right off our Herndred and
one sixty eight. We'll be here till seven o'clock and
when we come back, I'm going to tell you about
that unique pizza I was looking at outside. I don't
think I've ever seen one quite like this before. Maybe
you've got a question for coach Van Swahlberg or for

(09:49):
his big man Pierre Jenesse d a junior who's on
his way here. If you do send it our way
on the x app, use that hashtag ask FS and
we'll make sure to pass it on. I'm gonna ask
coach about some Christmas memories maybe too, but more recent
memories that game Saturday at the Saint Mart Center. I

(10:09):
know your goal is to have you know, the student
section overflowing like what you had to go up against
a BYU and have fifteen thousand strong in there again someday,
which people have been dreaming about for twenty years since
we built the place.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
But could you feel a boost from that crowd on
Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Definitely. I mean it's nice to have. You know, It's
funny you look around, you know, you have the schedule
that you have, and you don't realize you're you're on
the road as much as we did. And then I
was looking up at who was it? Oh was San Diego.
They played eleven games, nine of them at home, one

(10:53):
at San Diego State and one at Arizona State. Now
that's nice home cooking. You look at a lot of
these schools and they have a majority. You know when
I say majority, I'm talking about eighty percent plus home games.
It definitely makes it nice. So for us, this will
be our fourth non league game home, you know, out
of the eleven that we have. So hopefully next year

(11:14):
we're going to have a few more home games.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Yeah, coaches always love having more home games.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
But when you do play those tough road games, all
of a sudden, those big tests and conference like when
you go to the Thomas and Max Center, jumping back
into conference play on the twenty eighth, it's not quite
as intimidating as it might have been otherwise, Right.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
No, not at all. You know, the BYU it was,
you know, outside the outcome. It was a great experience.
I mean, it's to me, I've always loved playing. It
doesn't matter if it's a home or a way. Obviously
it's a lot nicer when it's home. But I think
the players enjoy playing in front of big crowds like that.
When you have seventeen thousand people, you know, even though
they're rooting against you, it's a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Yeah, sometimes it brings out the best in guys, and
there'll be plenty more opportunities for that. But the in
front of the opportunity, in front of the bulldo is Saturday,
two o'clock at home, the last non conference game. The
Lancers of cal Baptist are the opponent, and these two
teams have a little recent history.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
We'll talk about that when we come back with coach Wahlberg.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
If you've got a question for him or for Pierre
Jeneste Junior, who's going to join us little later on,
send it our way, use that xAPP in the hashtag ask.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
FS Big week. We've got basketball Saturday.

Speaker 3 (12:22):

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Where's the food is here?

Speaker 3 (17:10):
More importantly, coach Wahlberg is here and Pierre Jeneste Junior
is on his way here to talk some bulldog basketball
with us Saturday two o'clock the rematch with the Lancers
of CBU at the Save Mart Center. If you've got
a question for the coach or for Pierre, use the
ex app send it our way with that hashtag ask fs.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
SO coach.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
We talked about a few of the factors in that
breakthrough victory last Saturday at home against the University of
San Diego, overcoming a halftime deficit, making some big shots
down the stretch and making some big stops too. I
mean the defense for this team has been something that,
like the offense has kind of gone up and down.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
We've seen some real nice stretches.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
You guys who had some decided runs, I mean as
much as fourteen points in a row in some of
these games, and then there are some runs that have
gone the other way. So when it comes to playing
defense this Saturday against the CBU team that played you
to double overtime and prevailed down at that Palm Desert situation,
with the Acressuer Holiday Invitational, how would you describe what

(18:13):
the challenge is going to be for your squad defensively
on Saturday at two.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
Well, cal Baptist does a great job with their offense
and then they got I think their point guard I
think is like, you know, eighteenth or nineteenth in the nation.
Name scoring is twenty two somewhere around there, points a
game super quick. I mean he's quick and then they're
super quick, and he's really really quick. You know, I

(18:39):
was kind of disappointed with that. We let him go
right all the time. It's funny because he's a lefty
and he'll shoot probably half his shots right handed because
he goes right so much. And I'm watching, you know,
his last three games and everybody let's go right also,
so I don't feel as bad, but still we just
can't let him go right. He is just so tough.

(19:02):
He also shoots about six to eight free throws a
game because he's so hard, you know, going to rack.
And I think last game against US, he had twenty
nine points, but it did take thirty one shots to
get them. So we did a pretty good job until
I would say that this first and second overtime to
where we kind of let him loose a little bit
more than we should have.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
That's Dominique Daniels Junior, who will be here with CBU
on Saturday. Kind of rare you get to face the
same team and non conference twice in one season, but
the Bulldogs get that chance. And when conference play resumes,
you'll play everybody in the Mountain West twice this year,
first year of that twenty game schedule where you see
everybody twice, And this is something you're used to coach

(19:42):
for years in the high school ranks. Sometimes you play
the same team in back to back games, which makes
it really interesting.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Is there something.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
That maybe a pattern or trend or nuance that you've
come to appreciate over the years. When it comes to
playing a team a second time and your play having
a feel for some of those matchups.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
Yeah, usually the second time is a little bit less
scoring because you know what they're doing. You're not going
to be surprised as much. You know, our biggest you know,
when you were talking about the defense earlier, our biggest weakness,
I think is we do a pretty good job defensively
and then the shot goes up and then we kind
of relax. I don't think we finish off, you know,
going getting all five going to boards. We've been stressing that,

(20:25):
you know, every day, all the time, so we're hopefully
that you know, we can get everybody on the boards.
I think if we do that, you know, we give
ourselves so much better chance of winning.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
You just gave me flashbacks to this morning. I gave
up an easy offensive rebound put back when I should
have had it. So I hear you.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
You know, we've got a question from one of your
loyal Time Out club members. Who's here at Crowing Wolf
tonight again Crowing Wolf earndon A one sixty eight.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Come on, say hi if you want some.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
Free tickets to Saturday's two o'clock tip against cbu.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Tony wants to know, coach.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
I'm sure she's not the first to ask you what
your opinion is on this new court ruling about junior
college players in eligibility. It started with the Vanderbilt quarterback
who Fresno State beating the bowl game last year when
he was playing for New Mexico State, Diego Pavia was
granted by a federal court extra eligibility for the years he.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Spent in junior college.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
And the application of that as people envision it right
now across the country, is that you could have a
player play two seasons at junior college and still have
four left of Division one.

Speaker 4 (21:30):
That is scary. And I'll tell you why it's scary.
You have a lot of kids right now. They finish
high school. Then they go to one year or two
years out of prep school. So now they're nineteen twenty
maybe you know, maybe even turning twenty one, coming out
of prep school as a freshman. Now they go prep
school for a year or two, they go to junior

(21:51):
college for two years. Now you're talking about a twenty
three year old freshman. Now, you know, I don't think
what a lot of people understand. It's once you start
your college, you got to be at the you know,
at the end of your first year you have to
have twenty percent of your units done, the end of
second year forty percent. So trying to figure that in. Honestly,
I don't have any clue. I think it's opening up

(22:14):
a big can of worms. If it does stay, I
know the NC two A is going to fight it.
But right now, if it stayed that way, that means
somebody like Zayon for us, he was one year out
of junior college, means he would actually be a freshman
this year. Alex Crawford was one year out of JC,
so he would have two years left after this year.

(22:36):
So I mean, if you want to take the pluses
out of it, that's good that way, but it kind
of it kind of scares me. And then I think,
what's going to happen The good schools, the smart ones
are going to find that jac to where you can
kind of hide your players or put your players there.
You know, there's a lot of you know, some of
the you know, UNLB used to have the prep school

(22:57):
that would help them there, you know, and some of
these school have that. So now instead of having a
prep school, you have a JC deck to where you
can kind of hide players and get players there. So
it's you know, once they start something like that, it's
going to open up a can of works for a
lot of different things.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
So time will tell whether that's exactly how that works
out or if someone will have a better idea.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
But that's a good question, Tony. Thanks for sharing that.

Speaker 3 (23:22):
And before I forget coach, I mean, it is Christmas time.
The trees over there, there are some other decorations inside
Crowing Wolf. There's even the Christmas named pizzas here from
ninety nine Craft Pizza. So when it comes to Christmas
for you, let's let's start with twenty twenty four. Is

(23:42):
there something you'd really like to open up under that
tree on December twenty fifth?

Speaker 4 (23:49):
Just wins. I'll take wins anytime as gifts. No, it's
not like I need anything. You know, I've been very blessed.
I have four kids, nine grandkids. We're all going to
be together on Christmas, you know, with my children's spouses
and so forth. So for me, that's really nice. I

(24:11):
know this. You know. Obviously I'm making a little bit
more money than I did last year. I can tell
you my wife's spending a lot more money this year
for Christmas, so our grandkids and kids are going to
do a lot better for Christmas this year.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
Well, And if you can take me back to.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
That little future point guard growing up, when you were
making your Christmas list and wondering what was going to
show up under the trains, there's something you remember that
just knocked your socks off, or something you were really
hoping for back in the day.

Speaker 4 (24:47):
You know, it's funny, there's growing up. I had six brothers,
you know, we had so there were seven boys in
the family. We didn't have any sisters, and our Christmas
is I just remember growing up, we really didn't have
a lot, especially early. You know, we used to hand
me down all the shirts, all the pants and all that.
So I remember, I think the first big one was

(25:09):
just getting your first bicycle. I still remember that was
that was a big one for myself.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
I remember that feeling myself, how long did it take
before you wiped out the skin your knee?

Speaker 4 (25:20):
Not long? Not long? And I think if I remember
my brother and myself both got one at the same time,
we probably collided with each other. And knowing us when
you have six brothers, and you know, the first six
of us were within eight years, no twins, so we
were we were on each other pretty good.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
I believe it. I'm surprised there was only one collision
and not more.

Speaker 3 (25:44):
We're running up against a break here on the Bulldog
Basketball Hour, but there's much more to come. We're over
here at Crowing Wolf, right off of Herndred and one
sixty eight again the food trucks tonight where's the food
and ninety nine Craft Pizza. I see Big John Cleveland
right over there with a couple pizzas in it, saying
go find it. Make sure you get some of that
fresh squeeze ricata on top. And maybe you want to

(26:04):
try that Mary pizza complete with pomegranates. Tonight it's the
Christmas season and it's the Bulldog Basketball Our. Pierre Geneste
Junior're going to join us shortly as well, here till
seven o'clock on the Bulldog Sports Network.

Speaker 8 (26:18):

us who we are. So what does it mean when
traditions unite. When a beacon of hope beats a source

Speaker 2 (29:25):
We're halfway through already.

Speaker 3 (29:27):
Boy, it goes fast when you're having a good time.
And there are a lot of people in here having
a good time tonight. There are a lot of dogs
in here that are having a good time too, and
I mean the canine variety, not the bulldogs who are
going to be playing basketball at two o'clock Saturday at
the Save Mart Center. Maybe that's what you want to
put under the tree for some of those people in
your life. Some Bulldog basketball tickets that would make a
great Christmas gift. You can get season tickets for Bulldog Baseball.

(29:50):
Their schedules out and that's an exciting year for coach
Ryan over Then and Murph Gray and those guys. A
lot of Bulldog related presents that you can buy for
the folks that you love. And if you are thinking
about dinner, come on out here to Crowing Wolf. Where's
the food and ninety nine Craft Pizza or your food
selections tonight they've got anything you want to drink inside
on tap. You know what else I realized tonight, Coach,

(30:14):
I never noticed this before. I bet knowing you growing
up with six brothers, knowing how competitive you are, you're
probably a lot of fun to play a board game with.

Speaker 4 (30:27):
Yes, I'm very competitive. I still remember we used to
play a lot of cards growing up. You know, we
played a lot of board games, a lot of cards,
and I still have a memory, and it's not a
good one. I used to my nana, my grandmother. We
used to play a game called Canasta. I know, I've
ever heard of it. Yeah, we would play a lot.

(30:49):
I remember one time I was losing and I was
like maybe seven eight, and I took a couple extra cards.
I shouldn't have. Oh I still remember that and I
shouldn't have done it, but uh no, we we would
play a lot of games, a lot of different games,
a lot of board games. And actually, I don't know
if you've played it. You ever play a game called Catan?

Speaker 2 (31:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (31:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
In fact, my nephew who's home from the Air Force
Academy right now, he introduced me to.

Speaker 4 (31:14):
It's a great game.

Speaker 15 (31:15):
Now.

Speaker 4 (31:15):
Our family plays plays that a lot.

Speaker 3 (31:17):
Right now, what what two numbers do you ideally try
to get?

Speaker 4 (31:22):
Well, it's obviously you would like to get the six
and the eight. You know, those are the numbers that
you know, the red numbers you want to pay. We'll
get in that. But again, I'm the type of guy
I like in that game. I like, uh getting those cities.
It's those whatever you call this cities or whatever that
passes you settlement. Yeah, uh huh.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Well, see, I haven't played it enough to really have
the strategy down, so you just help me. Now, I'll
go for the six and the eight. Next time you
go for the cards. As many cards as you can get.
Get those cards, they're valuable. Well so the only reason
I brought that up over in the corner here at
crowl and Wolves. Every time I come, I see something new.

Speaker 2 (32:00):
Today.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
You've got ninety nine craft pizza and where's the food outside?
But inside, not only is there a Christmas tree up
now and some other holiday decorations, but in the corner
over where the restrooms are, they've got about twenty maybe
thirty board games over there. So if you're going to
come hang out here for a while, you can grab
one of those, sit with your friends, sip on whatever
you're drinking, and play some board games. You know what

(32:20):
I saw over there, which I haven't played them forever?
Coaches balder Dash? You ever played that one?

Speaker 8 (32:25):
No?

Speaker 4 (32:25):
I have it.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
Oh, it's kind of fun.

Speaker 3 (32:28):
I won't give away the punchline, but if your family
ever plays it, that's a good one. Basketball is what
they're playing Saturday at two o'clock against the Lancers of CBU,
and mentioned this is your second game against him. It
was a double overtime, crazy one down in Palm Desert
where you guys are down double digits.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
You surge into the lead.

Speaker 3 (32:46):
You've got a three point lead, and they've got to
go the length of the floor and try to hit
a three and lo and behold, they hit one.

Speaker 2 (32:52):
From forty feet to force overtime. You lose in double overtime.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
The other uniqueness there was both you guys had played
the night before in that you know, exempt tournament, so
maybe both of you were running on fumes a little bit,
especially once you got to the second overtime. Now you're
both coming in fresh you haven't played a game in
a week. Is there something you're hoping to see from
your guys in the first half Saturday. That's going to

(33:16):
be a good indication that you can maybe have a
two game win streak going back in the conference play.

Speaker 4 (33:22):
I think the biggest thing is going to be our
transition defense and non transition offense. If we get the
ball and get it out quick, that's when we're at
our best. Then we can get back and not let
them get some easy buckets. So how we move early,
I think it is going to be really really critical
for us.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
Well, we'll look forward to that, and we'll look forward
to seeing how Pierre Jeneste follows up his big game
the other day. He had eight points, nine rebounds, a
couple of blocks in his first game back since hands surgery.
He's going to come join us here in just a
couple of minutes. I know, to some extent, you're still
getting to know all these guys on your team, because
you know he's one of those. There's two of them

(33:59):
that been here longer than you have, and he's one
of them. In the time that you had to get
to know Pierre, not just his game, but his personality,
who he is, what he's about. What are some of
the things you really appreciated about him.

Speaker 4 (34:13):
Oh, he's a he's a quiet one. You're going to
find that out. He kind of a little bit quiet,
but he's a hard worker. Like I said earlier, he's
going to give everything he's got. What I like about
him is that whatever you give him, he's going to
work out. He's going to get better and better and better.
When we first got there, we're trying to teach him.

(34:33):
You know, he plays our dunker spot, which is down
underneath the basket, and trying to throw the ball high
to him and have him finish up high and not
come down with it. I think the first couple of
days I'm looking at PM Oh my god, I mean
the ball is flying every which way. And then after
about day three or four, he just kept working. Get
me better, coach, Get me better, and God, he's gotten

(34:55):
so much better from where he was, you know, when
we him in April May, when we got here, probably
about May when we started working with him. But just
as again, I'd say this all the time. Everybody talks
about different talents, you know. To me, a town is
what happened a great attitude another town, I think is
really important is just being a hard worker. And he

(35:17):
has both those.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
He does indeed, and we'll see that on display again
Saturday at two o'clock. And you'll also see Pierre on
Sunday night if you tune into Channel thirty.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Have you seen this yet? Coach?

Speaker 3 (35:30):
I know you don't just have time to waste or
kill unless you're you know, robbing people and canasta or something.
But six thirty Sunday night on ABC thirty, it's going
to be a thirty minute documentary about the basketball program,
and you're stepping into the role. And Pierre's one of
a couple of bulldogs who were interviewed in that piece
as well.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
Have you seen any of this yet?

Speaker 4 (35:50):
No, I have not seen anything. I didn't even know
it was Sunday. To be honest with you, well.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
You can make sure your your wife sets the DVR
and you can watch it and fans will have a
chance to watch it this Sunday and I believe the
following weekend as well.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
But it's kind of an exclusive behind the scenes look.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
They followed you around at some of the camps that
you did around the valley before the season started, and
then for your first game against Sack State, and in
the locker room here, and some of the things you said,
you may hear yourself say some things you didn't even
know you said.

Speaker 4 (36:21):
That happens quite a bit, That's what my wife tells me.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
Well, so for Bulldog fans, set those DVRs Sunday six
thirty on ABC thirty for that exclusive behind the scenes
look at coach Wahlberg stepping into a job that's been
a dream of his for a long time and gives
them the opportunity to help these Bulldogs fulfill their dreams.
Before we take the break, let's bring the big man
over here and I'll let you give him a proper

(36:50):
introduction here, coach, So, for someone who has never met
Pierre and is going to meet him for the first time,
how would you explain what they should expect from this
young man?

Speaker 4 (37:03):
Perfect gentleman, first class and everything he does. Just a
really good guy. I'll give you a little story though
about p Do you notice he's kind of changed his
hair color?

Speaker 16 (37:17):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (37:17):
Huh?

Speaker 4 (37:18):
Right, So he came in practice. It was it two
weeks ago, Pee, about two weeks ago he comes in
and I take a look at him, and the first
thing I said, Pee, I just want you to know
I did that about thirty years ago. And I said, now,
look what happened. So he looks at me and he goes,

(37:41):
are you serious? And he kept asking me for like
five minutes. I said, Pee, I'm not joking. I did
it one time, and look what happened. Then finally, about
ten minutes later, I had to tell him no, no,
I'm just joking. But he was a little scared.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
Well, well, we'll take a closer look see if there's
any arper marks where he's tracking his airlines progression. Here
he's looking good, Pierre. Welcome to the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
Thanks for coming out, Thank you, thank you. What are
you eating tonight? Did you figure it out?

Speaker 2 (38:12):
Uh? Not yet, not yet.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
I know you love to eat, man. I've seen you
tear up some prime rib on the road. Are you
a pizza guy sometime sometimes just sometime, Like.

Speaker 2 (38:25):
All right, well, I won't grill you about that just yet,
but we'll talk some basketball.

Speaker 3 (38:32):
I'm looking at your hand right now, so I see
your thumb, I see your index finger and your middle finger.
The last two are surrounded by a whole bunch of bandage.
There's probably like a splint in there too. Yeah, that's
gotta be hard to just get through daily life, let
alone play basketball with that.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
Are you realizing how much you took for granted?

Speaker 16 (38:54):
Oh, I don't know the way I approach it, just playing.

Speaker 2 (39:01):
Uh huh.

Speaker 3 (39:01):
So, but outside of basketball, is there something you've realized
that you have to do left.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
Handed now that you're not so good at left handed?
I say texting? Texting? Yeah, how about like starting a car?
Is that hard? How do I will call? So I'll
be fun, don't have to worry about that. Nope. So
have you been like texting the words you weren't trying
to type? No, it's pretty cool. I got those swords

(39:26):
of just slows you down.

Speaker 3 (39:28):
Yeah, all right, we'll I'll come up with some better
questions than that when we come back. Pierre Jenese Junior
is here, Bulldog, Big Man, He and the Dogs play.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
CBU Saturday at two o'clock at the same Art Center.

Speaker 3 (39:39):

hi out at Crow and Wolf and we'll give you

Speaker 2 (43:42):
Thought, okay, this chill, I'm well back to the Bulldog back.

Speaker 3 (44:01):
Where you can get some of that ninety nine craft
pizza outside or something from the Where's the Food truck
and have a great night. Here at Crow and Wolf,
we have Pierre Jeneste Junior Bulldogs Center with us. Pierre
return to action last Saturday against San Diego helped the
Bulldogs to a victory. He had eight points nine rebounds
in just seventeen minutes, blocked a couple of shots, doing

(44:22):
all that with a pretty big bandage and splint on
his right hand. I got to ask you, Pierre, what
did it feel like to shoot free throws that way?
Where like you can't even feel your last two fingers there.

Speaker 2 (44:34):
I'm imagining.

Speaker 16 (44:37):
That was probably the hottest thing to do in the game.
Because I didn't have a grip. I kind of just
push it, uh huh.

Speaker 2 (44:43):
If Youd, Gondy, Dorian and Mark I was about it.
They were all straight. I mean a couple of them
came up short, but they were on target. Yeah, I mean,
I charged to walk on into the splind, But.

Speaker 3 (44:56):
How long do you know how long you have to
keep that on before you get the full use of
your handback?

Speaker 2 (45:03):
Possibly the whole season, the whole season. Yeah, but I
just know I gotta take the p now and then
that's about it. So there's still a pen in there
right now. Yeah, so we can't call him the bionic man.

Speaker 3 (45:18):
From a place that a lot of people probably would
have no idea what the basketball culture is like where
you grew up. You're from Haiti and there are a
few players from Haiti who have made it to the NBA,
Old and Polonese probably the most prominent. You were telling
me when you were younger, you saw Samuel Dallen Bear

(45:38):
playing for Seaton Hall and he made it to the NBA.
Can you help us understand what basketball is like where
you come from.

Speaker 16 (45:48):
Honestly, basketball is what big back home soccer is, But
what we played, it's like once in a while, like
not out of key really played. I grew up playing soccer.
I did stop playing BASKETBA until I was fifteen, So
I would say basketball is the second spat back home,

(46:08):
but soccer is the main one where like everybody played.
My dad played, and my brother played, I played it,
my little brother, even my mom played for like a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (46:17):
So yeah, everybody played.

Speaker 3 (46:20):
And everybody sees your size, and they remember the stories
about a chemo olage one being a great keeper, and
they probably think you were a goalie.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
But I don't think that's your story, is it? No
going up?

Speaker 16 (46:33):
My father used to make me play striker in midfield because,
like they said, for the goldie was like too easy.
So my dad used to challenge us. So my brother
he was like a good midfield and my dad used
to make him play striker. Uh huh, Nicolas play like
while we don't play. So so what foot? Are you
better with? Right or left?

Speaker 2 (46:53):
Both? Both? So're equally confident with either foot? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (47:00):
Does that translate to basketball? Are you equally confident with
right and left hand?

Speaker 16 (47:05):
I would say last month, if you ask me out,
I would say no. But my left hand got so
much better since I can.

Speaker 3 (47:14):
So that makes sense. And one more soccer question for you.
I imagining you can kick a soccer ball pretty far.
I mean, especially as long as your legs are you
can get some pretty good torque going into that. Have
you ever tried kicking a football. Nah, I'm American football
Yeah nah.

Speaker 2 (47:35):
Not in my sport and not able to try it.

Speaker 3 (47:37):
But I mean, I'm just thinking you might be able
to kick a fifty yard field goal or something.

Speaker 2 (47:43):
Oh, it's on my bucket list, but I haven't tried.
Maybe in the offseason. Maybe now we can talk to
the new football coach, Matt it's about that.

Speaker 3 (47:53):
We're talking to Pierre Jeanneste Junior from the Bulldog basketball team.
They host CBU on Saturday at two o'clock.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
You can get tickets at.

Speaker 3 (48:01):
Go Bulldogs dot com or just come say hi to
us over here in the corner at Crow and Wolf
off of Herndon A one sixty eight. We're going to

Welcome back to the Bulldog Basketball Hour.

Speaker 3 (51:28):
We're coming down the home stretch here, about ten minutes
left with Pierre Jenessee Junior Bulldog big Man. He and
the Dogs host CBU the Lancers Saturday two o'clock in
a rematch of a game that was quite the thriller
down at the Akroscher Holiday Invitational in Palm Desert right
before Thanksgiving. We're talking to Pierre about where he grew

(51:48):
up in Haiti, that he was a soccer player like
his whole family, including his mother. Did you ever have
to go up against your mother, like try to take
the ball away.

Speaker 2 (51:57):
From her slide tackle or anything like that. I'll talk
about her when I was a kid a couple of times. Yeah,
But how'd she feel about that? I got put in
time outs followed like twenty minutes. I didn't know they
had a penalty box in soccer. I thought that was
a hockey day. And now you've been in the States
for a while.

Speaker 3 (52:18):
You started out your college career at Louisiana Tech, transferred here,
played under Justin Hudson last year.

Speaker 2 (52:24):
A little bit as you battled injuries here.

Speaker 3 (52:26):
You are dealing with this hand injury now, but coming
off your best game as a Bulldog in the win
over San Diego. What perspective do you have on life
in America since you didn't grow up here. I'm just
wondering if you notice some things that we don't, if
we've lived here our whole lives, is there something that
that maybe really strikes you as being different, something that

(52:48):
maybe you didn't know was going to be the case
when you moved here.

Speaker 16 (52:53):
I would say the culture is different compared through her album,
from the food, the weather, and.

Speaker 2 (53:01):
Just how people like interact. He's he's pretty much different
from where I'm from. Are you saying you missed that
tropical humidity? Yeah? Yeah, you don't like the dry heat
here I did not.

Speaker 3 (53:15):
Food wise, what's the biggest thing that sometimes you wish
you were back home to chow down?

Speaker 2 (53:20):
A m.

Speaker 16 (53:22):
We all one this I called giastos, But it's like
beans and rice, and it can be to me, it
can be fish, chicken, and or beef, so pretty much sometime.

Speaker 2 (53:36):
But here in the United States, I don't know. I
just eat what I can file, So you never try
to recreate that for your teammates or anything.

Speaker 3 (53:45):
I can cook. You can't cook. Well you can do
you're cooking on the court. And speaking of you know
you told us you grew up playing soccer. I'm just yeah,
I've asked a lot of people this question lately, and
in fact, every halftime we have somebody else giving us
a different answer to this.

Speaker 2 (54:01):
But two things. One, who was a.

Speaker 3 (54:06):
Player that you really looked up to or or you
said that was your favorite player, whether you patting your
game after him or not. And was there someone that
really helped you fall in love with the game of basketball,
because you spend a lot of time on basketball now,
So where did that come from?

Speaker 2 (54:21):
Who's your favorite player and who helped you fall in
love with the game?

Speaker 16 (54:25):
My food plan in general is Seawan camp for the Sonics.
But my food plant this said. I would say Giannis,
I really liked the other play and uh they played
would make me stop playing basketball.

Speaker 2 (54:39):
Scottie peeping, So I don't play like him or anything.

Speaker 16 (54:44):
But I remember I watched fifteen and then I saw
like a documentary for the Dream Team, Uh huh, and
I saw him saw somewhere just dump on somebody, and
I was like, whoa alatoya Scotty at the time, I
was at fifty, I was I was nine.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
Uh huh. I realized I'm tott On Scotti.

Speaker 16 (55:03):
But I never tried to play basket, and I want
know if Scotty can't do it, I probably won't be
able to. And then Scotty is the reason I started.
If I answered, got clear, I didn't think I would
ever stop playing basketball. I used to I used to
hate basketwall.

Speaker 3 (55:16):
In general because I didn't want to do it because
everybody told you should play because you were tall.

Speaker 2 (55:21):
Uh huh. He used to be really irritating, but that's
but it's working out now. Have you ever met Scottie pipp.

Speaker 16 (55:29):
Him, not actually met him, but I play in front
of him a couple of times because I played against you.

Speaker 2 (55:35):
I can't.

Speaker 16 (55:35):
I play against his son high sophomore in high school,
but I never got the chance to.

Speaker 2 (55:39):
Meet him, but I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, maybe
that'll happen sometime.

Speaker 3 (55:44):
And I mentioned the most famous player from Haiti as
far as an NBA career was old In Polonies, who
was also a center. He's a shot blocker, he was
a dunker. And you actually have a little bit of
history with Olden.

Speaker 4 (55:56):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (55:57):
Yeah. When I was in Los Angeles, my host family,
my host knew him pretty well.

Speaker 16 (56:03):
And then one time he put us on the phone
and then all then told me whenever I want to
get in the gym, like you got me.

Speaker 2 (56:10):
And then from that point.

Speaker 16 (56:12):
My senior year in high school, you trade me the
whole winter, you teach me better rebounding technique. Ought to
like move better to block a shot. But it's been
on quite a while since we train. But if I
have to go back to Los Angeles, I know for
me and him gonna get him the gym.

Speaker 3 (56:30):
So maybe you can eat some good Haitian cuisine together.

Speaker 2 (56:34):
He always will. He also say that too, that's all
he says.

Speaker 3 (56:39):
Well, I got to ask you sin so much of
your game and Coach Wahlberg described your position in this
offensive scheme as the dunker, right, That's how you're defined.
If you're gonna be shooting the ball, it's most likely
going to be dunking it or laying it in, whether
it's off a lob or I put back or whatever.
But what is more satisfying for you throwing down a dunk?

(57:00):
Are just rejecting somebody shot on the other end.

Speaker 16 (57:04):
That's that's quite a tough question for me because I
love doing both. But it depends for me blocking a shot,
I block a lot, obviously, But the thing I find
like more enthusiastic is when someone tried to dalk on
me and then I just because I'm always there, so
I'm going block it, and then I'm not gonna still down,

(57:27):
gonna run like on offense.

Speaker 2 (57:29):
But that makes me feel better.

Speaker 16 (57:30):
But a put boy dunk is uh is what actually
got me eyed up?

Speaker 2 (57:36):
Uh huh.

Speaker 16 (57:37):
Whenevery nobody boks out and then just going down and
show a tority and then just tore it down. That's
all open most so, and.

Speaker 3 (57:45):
Coach Wahlberg this year has emphasized rebounding a lot for
the whole team, and and in the games that you
guys haven't won, it's there's been a big discrepancy in rebounding.
Where you guys have been more competitive, you've rebounded a
lot better. How important is that to you? How maybe
how personally do you take that challenge to crash the
glass and get those rebounds?

Speaker 2 (58:07):
Honestly, I take for me, I don't really care abous coin.

Speaker 16 (58:13):
I don't really approach the game where I say, Okay, Pierre,
we're gonna drop.

Speaker 2 (58:17):
Twenty tonight or anything like that. You never happen.

Speaker 16 (58:21):
But I just know every time I'm gonna go for
the rebound, and if it's going out of bounce, obviously
I'm gonna dive on.

Speaker 2 (58:28):
The ground or dive on the crowd and trying to
save it.

Speaker 16 (58:31):
So basically I'll do everything for a rebound, so.

Speaker 2 (58:37):
We might see a double double in the future. Looking
forward to it Saturday Saturday two o'clock against CBU. We're
looking forward to it too.

Speaker 3 (58:47):
