(00:25):
your host, the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Welcod evening from Crowing Wolf out here in Clovis. Hey,
let's be some time out club members here. They're ready
to go to the game Saturday at four Presno State
Basketball against Colorado State. That is Saturday at four at
the Save Mart Center. And there's a lot going on Saturday.
It's Star Wars Night. I'm told they'll be up to
eight Star Wars characters in the house on Saturday, So

(00:52):
pregame photo opportunities with Star Wars characters, including well, let's see,
I've got coach Van Swaalberg here, Coach.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Don't do that to me.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
Who's your favorite Star Wars character?

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Ah? What is it? R two D two art.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I'm so glad you said that, because R two D
two is gonna be in the house on Saturday. Maybe
he can calculate some analytics to help you out.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Huh is he.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Really gonna be there?

Speaker 4 (01:20):
R D two is gonna be there now. I don't
know about three po but R two D two is
gonna be there.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Unbelievable. That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
I was hoping for a little Chubuka myself. My son
in law does that great better than I just did.
I'm sure much better?

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Is that Jonathan?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
No, that's Connor. Okay, Connor. Next time I see him,
I'm gonna ask him.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
You'll be amazed.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
I believe there's just a different level level of guttural
utterances that that come out of a Wookie compared to me.
But sounds like Connor maybe part Wookie.

Speaker 5 (01:55):
He is, alright, and my daughter's little goofy with him,
so kind go together.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Well, so you can meet Coach Wahlberg's favorite Star Wars character,
R two D two Saturday at the Save Mart Center.
You can get tickets for that game for just eight
dollars right now, a flash sale at go Bulldogs dot com.
And another thing that's gonna be kind of cool. Coach
Wahlberg won't experience this because he's going to be in
the locker room getting the Dogs ready for the second half.
But at halftime, Coach Matt Enz and the entire Fresno

(02:22):
State football coaching staff will be introduced at mid court.
So if you haven't met the new football coach and
his staff yet, be there Saturday at the Save Mart
Center and watch Fresno States rematch with Colorado State a
four o'clock tip. Coach, you know that the Mountain West
is a really tough basketball conference. More than half the
league was in the NCAA Tournament last year, six out

(02:43):
of the eleven. You've seen firsthand how tough it is
this year. But I thought last night and some of
the games that you weren't involved in, you guys didn't
play last night illustrated that as much as ever. I mean,
Air Force, if they get any good breaks at all,
would have beaten San Diego State.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
It was an unbelievable game.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
I watched the last eight minutes and they all spool
for Joe. You know, I want to see him get
his first win, and it's just amazing. I mean, they
make one free throat miss the second tip it in
take a one point lead with four point four seconds.
You know, the one thing you don't want to do
is let somebody go coast to coast, and boy, he

(03:23):
went coast to coast. If you're gonna get beat on that,
you get beat on a three. You don't let anybody
go straight down the gut. You know, usually you'd like
to get one turn, but again you're afraid that if
you do try and get a turn, you get a
block and foul.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
So it's kind of tough. It was, it was, but
it was really tough.

Speaker 5 (03:40):
And then the Colorado State Boise game was another phenomenal game.
You know, again, a big offensive rebound, kick out three.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
My Lake wins the game for them.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
It's just the way the league is. It's pretty You're right,
it's a tough league.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
But I thought, you know, last night's results, or at
least the way the game went and call it out
of springs and that, you know, I thought there are
a couple bad breaks, the play they got reviewed, they
didn't get overturned, and there are a lot of things
in that game. But it shows that the last place
team can compete with a team that was in the
National Championship game a couple of years ago.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Not even a question.

Speaker 5 (04:13):
And again Air Force you know, I don't think a
lot of people realize you go play up an air
force here on what seventy two seventy three hundred feet
you know, up there, so to breed and understand that
they're used to that. It's a little bit tough. You know,
we go, I guess we go to Wyoming on Tuesday,
I think next week yep, and they're at I think
seventy three hundred feet too above sea level. So you know,

(04:37):
when you only play seven or eight guys, it becomes
a little bit tougher.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Well, and thankfully the guy who's going to be joining
us tonight knows a thing or two about altitude because
he grew up in it in the Denver area. That's
Jalen Weaver, Bulldog guard, who will be on his way
a little bit later.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
Coach Van s Wahlberg is here.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
We've got a bunch of Bulldog basketball fans here and
the food trucks tonight. I was just trying to multitask
and send out a tweet. Can we call them tweets anymore?
I don't know, but a post on X about what's
on the menu tonight here at Crown Wolf, because that's
kind of the fun part. Every time we do a show,
we don't know what's going to be out there, which
food trucks? Are you a corn dog guy, Coach?

Speaker 5 (05:13):
I actually I am. I haven't had one in a
long time. I'm actually gonna go out and get at
least one.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
So the corn Dog Company is here, And in case
you hadn't noticed, there's a giant inflatable man pointing you
toward the corn Dog truck. And I understand they have
a Honey corn Dog that is getting raid reviews out here.
And right next to that is Pizza Yolo, which in
fact has Hollapano garlic cheesebread tonight.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
How good does that sound?

Speaker 2 (05:43):
We're here on the radio till seven o'clock, and I
think I saw some t shirts walk in that we're
going to be giving away tonight to some lucky Bulldog fans.
Saturday four o'clock will be the game against Colorado State,
and we'll talk about the Rams and the matchup you
had with him last time. But you may playing shorthanded.
And one thing, it's not easy, you know, what's the

(06:05):
old saying, Coach, It's hard to teach an old dog
new tricks.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
Yes, it is.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
When you've been doing something a long time like you have.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
I mean, you've had as much success in basketball as
just about anybody we can think of. Sometimes you really
don't like to change the way you do things, do you.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
No, you don't, because you know what you do usually successful.
But you know, you go to a different level, you know,
you different things happen. You lose a kid here, somebody
gets hurt there. And like I said earlier on one
of the post games, you know, forty seven years of
coaching and I think I zoned four times my whole life,

(06:45):
and we zoned three of the last four games, you
know three, So it's it's something that I'm.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Not used to.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
But you know, due to the you know, my two
guards that we have, you have you know what, just
hear being at five to nine, five ten and jay
On it's you know six. But in this league, if
you go man and man, have them playing both at
the same time, you're gonna be in trouble.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Too easy for the other team to play matchups. Still
little mouse in the house post them up, that kind
of stuff.

Speaker 5 (07:10):
Exactly right, and you know, obviously we're gonna hurt rebounding
with the two of them in there. But if you
go man and man that you're just asking for tube,
you're gonna be in thought table one way or the other.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
So that's a pretty big deal to be a man
to man coach and decide, you know, we're gonna go zone.
And I know that had to be a difficult decision
to make in some ways, and you just kind of
outline why it's the only decision to make. But I
guess why I brought it up. And I didn't have
to tell you what I was talking about here. He
knew because you've been thinking about it twenty four to seven.

(07:44):
I'm sure that zone the guys are getting more and
more comfortable with it. Their understanding should be growing from
game to game about how to execute in it. How
much more effective do you think it can be moving forward?
And or there's some things maybe that fans and watch
for that say, you know what, these guys are really
getting the hang of that zone defense.

Speaker 5 (08:04):
Well, the biggest thing, if we do it right, we
don't let the ball get inside.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Obviously you're playing the zone.

Speaker 5 (08:13):
That one thing you don't want to give up in
the game the way it is nowadays is you don't
want to give up obviously laps is that's usually at
a sixty percent clip.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
And then you don't want to give up corner threes.

Speaker 5 (08:24):
Corner threes for most teams that are out of a
forty percent clip, I think we're actually about a forty
one forty two percent clip ourselves on corner threes. So
those are the two shots you really don't want to
give up. And if you do the zone right, we
don't get you know, you shouldn't give as many of
those up now. Last game in New Mexico, they just
killed us on the corner three. Our rotations weren't the

(08:47):
way they're supposed to be, so it's gonna take time,
but again it's you know, hopefully those are the two
shots that we want.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
To try and eliminate.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
Layups and threes.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Layups and corner threes.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
You mentioned how well your team has shot the corner three,
and one of the corner three masters is coming tonight.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
Jalen Weaver has been really effective in those spots.

Speaker 5 (09:07):
I think Jayden's if I remember right, maybe in the
mid forties on his corner three is maybe forty five
forty six percent, and he's you know, you look last
year he was I think his three point percentage was
twenty four percent.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
So he's really worked on it.

Speaker 5 (09:22):
John Welch and the coaches have done a great job
with him to get him a lot better.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Jalen Weaver will be joining us later. Vance Wahlberg is
here now here till seven o'clock. We've got some T
shirts to give away. The food trucks are out in
the parking lot. It's nice and toasty inside here at
Crow and Wolf near Herndon A one sixty eight or
hold for the Bulldog Basketball Hour. You know we're talking
about the zone defense. But one guy who impressed me
in the last game, and I know it was a

(09:48):
tough game and you were up against a buzzsaw against
the first place team in front of a huge crowd
on the road. But what impressed me was really the
man demand principles in that zon own that one of
your guys decided in the way he did it, I
thought set an example for the other guys. Maybe you
have a little different wrinkle, and you've dissected the film
and probably seen a mistake or two that was made too.

(10:10):
But when Pierre Janessee is fronting a post player and
basically throwing his whole body in front of the past
to deflect it and get a steal when he can't
even embrace himself really with one hand that's still all
taped up to me. That just underscored again the standard
that he's setting for your guys in terms of investment
and effort.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
P will give you everything he's got all the time.
You're exactly right, he's he's playing with one hand. I
mean he's got a claw in one hand for him
to catch the ball and do certain things. It's been
really tough offensively, but every game he's gonna give you
the best.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
You know he can.

Speaker 5 (10:44):
Now, the thing that we do need from P is
part of the Zone is that peace guy to be
able to get out to the corner. And had he
struggled a few times getting out into the corner. But
again he's gonna try. He's gonna give you the best.
Jaron Harris is kind of the arc tech of the Zone.
He ran it at Chipolo JC when he was in
junior college coaching junior college.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
So it's something I really like it. It's just a
little tweaks that we got to make just to make
it a.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
Little bit better, and like anything else, right, I mean,
I guess if you're playing man a man, you might
be able to get away with a weak link as
long as the other team doesn't figure it out. But
in his zone, if one guy misses his assignment, you're
pretty vulnerable, aren't you?

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Very vulnerable?

Speaker 5 (11:29):
But even man and man, Paul beannesce with you one
guy the way we would play our man and man,
if one guy doesn't get to his spot, it hurts you.
And honestly, the principles on what we do in our
man and man is almost ninety five percent the same
as his zone.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
You know, where the ball moves.

Speaker 5 (11:44):
You got to move on the pivot, you got to
sprint on the pass, you got to get to what
we call the quarters, to where the ball is supposed
to be on that side of the court. So doing
all those little things, they're really basically very much the same.
The difference with the zone is there's a lot of
principles where the ball, depending on what alignment they are,
is how we match up, whether it's a one three one,
whether it's a two one two, or whatever else. So

(12:06):
trying to understand that that's been kind of confusing.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
Part right now, Well, well, look to see how much
better the Bulldogs are in that zone. Saturday at four
when they host Colorado State. Three thirty will be our
pregame show again.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
Eight dollar tickets right.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Now at go Bulldogs dot com and you can meet
your favorite Star Wars characters. R two D two is
definitely going to be in the house. I'll see if
I can confirm any other specific characters for you.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
I will tell you what call.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
My son in law just walked in.

Speaker 5 (12:33):
Yeah, and you want a Chewbacca, he will give you
one after the break.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
How's that?

Speaker 2 (12:37):
When we come back? How's that for a tease? Who's
hosting this show? When we come back, we are gonna
hear a Wookie call that will put me to shame,
and we'll talk some more basketball. You know, Towbacca had
some size and height, coach, he might be a good
anchor in the back of that.

Speaker 5 (12:54):
I could definitely use him. I know he'll read my
the heck out of the ball for us.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
And you do have some guys with pretty big hair,
but not that.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
Big a hair.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Yeah, no, I'm not close.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
We'll be back having a good time at Crow and
Wolf tonight at the Bulldog Basketball Hour. Come hang out
with us. You might win a t shirt, keep it
here on the Bulldog Sports Network from their field.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
You know Chewbacca had some size and height coach, he
might be a good anchor in the back of that
I could definitely use it. Who had Chewbacca on their
bingo card tonight? I don't know, but do you never
know what you're gonna find out by the way they
do bingo here Sometimes at Crow and Wolf they have
trivia on the third Thursday of every month as well.
I wonder how that went last week. I think they

(16:41):
were doing sitcom trivia. We're here at Crowing Wolf near
Herndon A one sixty eight here till seven o'clock talking
Bulldog basketball.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
We've got t shirts to give away.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
We're going to talk about Saturday's matchup with Colorado State,
which is playing really good basketball right now.

Speaker 4 (16:54):
That's a four o'clock tip. Three thirty.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Pre game tickets are eight dollars if you take advantage
of that flash sale at go Bulldogs dot com. And
it's also Star Wars Nights, so not only can you
meet the new Bulldog football coaching staff will be introduced
at halftime. If you get there early before the game,
you can get your photo taken with several Star Wars characters.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
There's gonna be eight different Star Wars characters.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Yet some of them are still a mystery, but we
know there's going to be a Jedi. There'll be some
X Wing pilots R two D two. Coach Wahlberg's favorite
will be there. Cannot confirm if there will be any Wookies,
but it sounds like we have found one here at
Crow and Wolf. So Coach, give me the story here.
When did you first discover a hidden talent that your

(17:36):
son in law possessed?

Speaker 5 (17:37):
I honestly, I don't remember. Maybe it was one of
the nights we were drinking or whatever. Oh, I know
it was one of the best Wookie sounds I've ever heard.
Connor's a little different person. I appreciate and taking my
daughter off my hands, that's one thing I definitely appreciate.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
But no, he's good people.

Speaker 5 (17:59):
We play football, Forsland City, went on, played at Tulsa
from they both my daughter and them both went to
Fort Washington, cas Clovis West and I actually ended up
meeting each other after after high school.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
And No, he's a he's a good Wookie.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
I remember watching Connor play for Clovis West. I'm trying
to remember. I'm this, I'm going back a few years.
What years you graduate? Two thousand and two? Two thousand
and two, were you number forty one?

Speaker 12 (18:29):
Yeah, my junior year and then forty seven.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Okay, okay, I'm not losing it all right, pretty good,
good teams, Yeah, good player. Obviously you just gave his resume.
So uh and I did a very you know, lame,
below average attempt at Chewbacca a few minutes ago. I'll
try to do it again. See that's about all I
could do.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
That's just really good.

Speaker 3 (18:52):
That's really good.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Okay, I got some courtesy collapse here at growing Wolf.
So Connor, before you do it for us? When did
you really.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
As you had this abilities?

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Probably back in high school? Actually, yeah, so just on
a dare or something you tried it or your friends
were doing it or no, it was probably at some
party I was at. Yeah, okay, and I I just
discovered this talent. I don't know that one of those nights.
So well, who wants to hear Connor as Chewbacca?

Speaker 3 (19:25):
Anybody? Nice?

Speaker 13 (19:26):
And wow?

Speaker 4 (19:27):
Cokay lay it on?

Speaker 2 (19:28):
Is Connor?

Speaker 3 (19:28):
Alright?

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Go dogs? So that kind of sounds like the concerned
Chewy right, give me the mean one? Ooh, the main angry?

(19:50):
How many kids you have, Connor three? How often did
they ask you to do this? Uh?

Speaker 12 (19:56):
Once in a while the boys want me doing it
more than my daughters.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
How often you get to come to the Bulldog games.

Speaker 12 (20:05):
I've been to actually every game but the Air Force game.
So maybe I'll stay back going forward.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Coach, if he comes Saturday, he'd better be addressed as Chewbacca.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
That's all I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
All Right, we'll see, we'll see'll I'll find I'll find
a costume. So you know, it's it's kind of convenient
we have you here because I asked Coach all my
goofy questions and we do need to talk some basketball.
But I bet being Vance Wahlberg's son in law, you'd
probably see a side of Coach that we would never see.

(20:36):
That that maybe you appreciate something about him that we
just wouldn't see by watching him pace on the sidelines
or try to get guys in the right spot on defense,
or tell him they should have taken that.

Speaker 4 (20:46):
Shot or they shouldn't have taken that shot.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
Tell us something about your father in law that we
wouldn't know without talking about I tell people all the.

Speaker 12 (20:52):
Time, Dance is one of the most sincere likable people
I've ever met.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
He just cares for people so much.

Speaker 12 (21:00):
And I know a lot of people always just see
him like yelling and intense on the sideline. But he's
just a great father, great grandfather and just a great
person to.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Be your own. And I didn't pay.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Him, but you did mention that he played junior college
football before he went to Tulsa. That means maybe he
could get some eligibility back. Do you ever play basketball, Connor?

Speaker 12 (21:26):
I did have for Washington Elementary. Yeah, yeah, so I
can rebound jump shots. Sound very good, but.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
So if you're playing horse with your wife, I have
no chance when you not. No, just wanted to hear
it from your mouth. We need to take another commercial.
We'll get back to basketball after this, I promise, But Connor,
hit us one more time with that chewy man.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
We just we can't get enough.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
If you want to hear that in a big basketball arena,
be there Saturday, four o'clock to save March Center, three
point thirty to pre game. Come here tonight. We're at
Curling Wolf till seven o'clock on the Bulldog Sports Network Fromlearfield.

your tickets yet, go Bulldogs dot com. They're just eight dollars.
If you make it here to Crowing Wolf tonight. Who knows,
we might find a ticket for you. We've got some
t shirts, are gonna give it away in a moment.
We're gonna have Jalen Weaver join us here shortly he's

(25:40):
in the house, and coach Vance Wahlberg is here and
coach you know, we talked after the New Mexico game.

Speaker 4 (25:46):
That was a tough game. Just didn't get off to
a good start.

Speaker 2 (25:49):
They got off to a big lead, maybe took their
pedal off the medal a little bit. You guys had
a nice run, made it a game again, and then
they did pull away late. And the Lobos are in
first place. Colorado State's right behind them because the Rams
are winning tough, close games. How would you describe the
challenge of going up against a Nico Medved coached Colorado

(26:11):
State squad.

Speaker 5 (26:12):
Nigo's a very good coach. They run, you know, a
lot of the Princeton stuff. They're you know, they got
some veteran players. They know how to shoot the ball,
they know how to move the ball, and like you said,
they won a lot of them in Utah State have
won a lot of close games.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
Again, they just you go back and you take a look.

Speaker 5 (26:32):
You know, Jayden for us is the only senior on
our team. You go look on their team, I think
five of their top nine or four grad seniors fifth
years once a senior. You know that experience just means
so much at this level. You know that COVID year
has helped so many different programs. Unfortunately hasn't really helped
us because we don't have any of those fifth year

(26:54):
seniors or whatever. But it's just such a difference and
just the body, the experience, knowing what to do, one
to do it, and so forth.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
But Nico does a great job with those guys.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
And they always seem to make good decisions.

Speaker 4 (27:07):
They pass the ball so well.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
I mean, they operate their offense, they move the ball
within big assist numbers, always among the leaders and assists.
What struck me in the first meeting, and I thought
at the time it might be a bit of an aberration,
But they've done this pretty consistently. Their bench this year
has been really big for him, and they don't have
much drop off when they suboutcaves, No, they don't.

Speaker 5 (27:30):
And like you said, they're very deep and they have five, six,
seven guys that you leave open, they're gonna knock that
three down, and that really scares me inside. Wise, they
got a couple of big guys that do a good job.
One of them pops out and shoots the three. They
just got a good, good, complete, all round team. They
got point guards that know what to do, how to
share the ball, where to get the ball to the

(27:52):
right person at the right time. And you know, like
I said, you know Nico does a really good job
with that group.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
You know, I had a thought and you've probably beaten
me to it, or you have a different layer of it.
But you're you've been emphasizing rebounding with your team, and
now it's trying to rebound out of his own and
you're emphasizing that to the guys who are six eleven,
but also the guys who are five to ten. Right,
you need everybody to pitch in and rebounding, and Colorado

(28:21):
State has a player.

Speaker 4 (28:22):
But if there's anybody in the league.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Let me ask you this. I know I'm weaving a
circuitous are out here. You ever have that thought when
you watch a guy on film or in person, you say, man,
if I had his athleticism, I do X y Z.

Speaker 3 (28:37):
And he is that good. He leads the league in rebounding.

Speaker 4 (28:40):
Nat Clifford, yep, tell everybody how tall he is.

Speaker 5 (28:44):
Maybe six ' five, six ' five and a half
for the most but I would say six y five.
But just a solid bill. Just that ball goes up,
he finds a way to get it. You know, he
put his name in for the NBA when and tried
pulled his name out afterwards. But just a you know,
just a complete all round player. He just doesn't I
think he leads him in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals.

Speaker 2 (29:08):
He's an athlete, yes, he is all quick twitch and
Jalen Weaver actually has a little history with him, and
we'll talk to Jalen about that in a moment. But I
bring that up because I'm just guessing the way Clifford
gets his rebounds, because there isn't you know, being six
' ten and thick and boxing guys out and beating
people to the ball. There it's I mean, he's getting
rebounds where he's just beating people who are in position

(29:30):
to get the rebound to the ball.

Speaker 5 (29:32):
He is actually you know, he reminds me he's you know,
we have Elijah Price, who I think does a very
good job on the boards, and he lies is one
of his big pluses that he's just consistent. Here he'll go,
he'll go, he'll go. And Nick is kind of the
same way, you know, with a little bit of a
stronger body, but in a little bit more athletic, but
he just he just doesn't stop. He just keeps going

(29:55):
at you.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
He has that trampoline following him around everywhere he goes.
Can he get off the ground? Jalen Weaver can get
off the ground too, and he's here tonight. So before
we bring him on, maybe you can give us a
taste of what you've appreciated about Jalen from the time
you just first got to know him a few months
ago to as you see him as one of your
veteran leaders on this team now.

Speaker 5 (30:17):
Jyalen, it's just he's one of those players who's gonna
do whatever you ask him to do. And as a coach,
he always appreciate that. He's a tremendous defensive player, like
I said earlier, and he's improved his shooting. He's put
a lot of time in with Coach Watson and the
other coaches to work on his shooting, work on his shot,
and work on his ball handling and every game.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
He's just going to give you what.

Speaker 5 (30:39):
He has and I really appreciate that. You know, it's
tough for him. You know, we all want to win more.
With him being the only senior of the team, you
know that, and having such a new team, it's been
tough on him. But I think he's done a great job.
I appreciate and respect everything he's done for us.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
And he's got a reputation around the league for his defense,
and we got a pretty good taste of that last year.
In fact, you know, Fresno State's playing Colorado State. Last year,
he would have been spending a lot of time guarding
Isaiah Stevens, who was the best player in the league.
And I'm sure we're going to see him on some
pretty good players here Saturday. But on the offensive side
of the ball, you just mentioned how much he's improved

(31:18):
with the perimeter shot, especially in the corner. Is there
another element of his game that you think a month
from now we're going to see at a completely different level,
because you see that potential in him offensively, I think once.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
For Jay then he can get to the rack. The question.

Speaker 5 (31:34):
A lot of times when he gets to the rack,
he kind of for whatever reason. We've been working he
goes off the wrong foot, and I think if he
can learn how to bump first and go up, I
can see him adding another three to five points a
game just to his average because he's so strong going
to the rack again. He's been working on it. We're
working on it. He gets that jump stop down, I

(31:57):
just think he can get that much better.

Speaker 2 (32:00):
Well, it's been fun to watch his progression so far,
and hopefully we'll see more of that on Saturday, four
o'clock the tip against Colorado State three thirty the pregame show.
You know something that I didn't ask you about, and
I neglected to ask you the last game, and a
few fans have asked me about, including some time out
club folks tonight. You know, we know the injury situation.
DJ Douglas is out for the year. You know your

(32:23):
Pierre's been in and out of the lineup, and we
see where he is now. Other guys have played banged up,
Jalen smissed some time himself, but MIKEL.

Speaker 4 (32:31):
Robinson.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
Some people wanted to know if there's any clarity about
that situation or any further developments. All we've heard so
far is that eligibility issues are keeping him out.

Speaker 5 (32:40):
And that's what it is, you know, I can't really
go too far into it, but it is eligibility issues,
and it's something that we're hoping it's going to get cleared.

Speaker 3 (32:50):
We don't know when it's you know, it's a time.

Speaker 5 (32:54):
Frame that the school and the n C TWOA hasn't
said yet, so we just kind of keeping in hope,
but that you know, we can get mikel back.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
So in the meantime, you just have to operate as
if you're not gonna have him and play with who
you've got.

Speaker 3 (33:07):
That's what we have, and that's what we're gonna go with.

Speaker 5 (33:10):
And you know, with Jayden being here, I just told
him today, you know, talking today with him, he's got
to be ready to play thirty two thirty five minutes
a game, you know, because we're kind of at that point,
you know, because of not having Mike Kel you know,
you're gonna play more and pe and then anytime Ac
or Eliza go out. Now you're talking, you know, Jayden's

(33:31):
tallest guy in the court, and I wish we were
a little taller.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
I think there's a song about that, Once upon a time, Uh,
maybe Jaylen will singing for us if he's old enough
to remember that song. I'm pretty old.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
Well, coach.

Speaker 6 (33:46):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (33:46):
I know everybody's pulling for you, looking forward to Saturday
and a chance at a rematch against Colorado State. And
before I let you go, you mentioned Ac and Alex Crawford.
That was the trip where he really came alive. First
in Logan and then in Fort Collins. He had a
really good game against the Rams, and they didn't seem
to have a whole lot of answers for him. What

(34:06):
for somebody who hasn't watched Alex game yet and they're
coming Saturday just to see the Star Wars characters and
see if Connor is going to do the Chewbacca for him? Uh,
what should they look for from Alex Crawford on Saturday
at four o'clock?

Speaker 3 (34:19):
Alex just you know what, I'll be honest with you.

Speaker 5 (34:22):
I think the big part why he didn't start off
as well and he's playing so much better now is that, honestly,
we didn't go to him as much.

Speaker 3 (34:29):
We kind of left him.

Speaker 5 (34:31):
On the side and so forth, with the different injuries
and the different things that's happened. You know, we kind
of start finding out putting him in more and pick
a roll situations. He's got good hands. Obviously, he's a
heck of an athlete. You know, he's one of those
guys before you know he's up, he's dunking on you.
But again, I think it was just more just us
trying to get in the ball a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (34:52):
Well, we'll look for more of Alex Crawford and more
from the Bulldogs Saturday at four Colorado State coming in
Star Wars Night. Meet the Football Coaches. Tickets just eight
dollars at Go Bulldogs dot Com. Coach always the pleasure,
look forward to seeing you at the arena.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
Thanks Ball, appreciate you.

Speaker 22 (39:06):
Tonight, Jalen, Yeah, Josh, I said me real good. After
the after this little show, get some pizza in and
get ready for uh the game come on on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (39:15):
So, I mean that's how you really get to know
someone is what they put on their pizza. What do
you get on your pizza? So I just got a
regular pepperoni.

Speaker 22 (39:22):
Yeah, this just simple because you know, this was my
first time I trying to I want to be safe,
so I just go the regular pepperoni.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
See that says a lot about your personality. Right. Let's
ask another hard hitting question that has yielded some pretty
colorful answers today favorite Star Wars character by uh Skywalker?
Luke skywas Skywalker? Yeah, kind of the protagonist, the main
guy there, Yeah, the main guy. Uh huh.

Speaker 4 (39:48):
So R two D two is gonna be at the
game Saturday.

Speaker 3 (39:50):
Did you hear that?

Speaker 2 (39:51):
Oh no, I didn't hear about that. Got a game? Yeah,
I wonder I want to come up to your knee maybe. Yeah,
he's gonna be like halftime before the game. They're doing pictures.
Oh yeah, that's kind of cool. Actually, you were featured
in the promotional photo that I saw, and you were
holding a red lightsaber. I didn't even see that myself.
I gotta see that, did Do you remember holding the lightsaber?

(40:13):
Or is that the magic of photoshop?

Speaker 3 (40:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (40:15):
I think it's photoshop with the lightsaber. That's kind of scary.
I mean, I kind of feel bad that you didn't
get to have fun with the lightsaber, and I wish
I could have. Maybe we can make that happen Saturday
if you beat Colorado State. Yeah, yeah, no for sure.
So tell everybody where you grew up, Jada.

Speaker 22 (40:32):
I grew up in Wild Colorado and I was born, born,
and raised there. I traveled around a lot there. I
did a prep year. My senior ye in high school,
I did a prep year in uh Southern California, and
then after that I went my freshman year in college.
I went to the University of Bada, and then after
the BAT I went to JUCO in Salt Lake Solid

(40:53):
Community College, and then I did my first year at
Freston State last year, and then mere my senior year
at Frestment's State right now, and who.

Speaker 2 (41:01):
Knows, maybe there's another year because of this ruling about
junior colleges and the eligibility. And I know a lot
of Bulldog fans would love to see you back next year.
You know, we talk a lot in this conference. Yeah,
I had a feeling they.

Speaker 4 (41:14):
Feel that way.

Speaker 2 (41:16):
We talk a lot about what it's like for the
sea level team in Presno State to have to go
play at altitude seventy two hundred feet at Wyoming, like
you guys will do.

Speaker 4 (41:25):
Next week air Force seven thousand feet.

Speaker 2 (41:28):
You've already been to Fort Collins, which is about the
same elevation you grew up in there in Denver.

Speaker 4 (41:33):
But when you left Smoky Hill High.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
School home with the Buffaloes to go down and play
in Santa Clarita, at prep school. Did you notice the
difference between playing at altitude and being here in California?

Speaker 22 (41:46):
Yeah, I always knows the difference, especially like just me
being like from Colorado and let's say, like I've been
out here in like Fresno, then like going back to
like Wyoming, are playing in the Colorado always like feels different.
Like it's like crazy because I'm I'm like born and
raised there by. I still feel like the elevation difference
like during the game. So it's crazy, you know, it's
physics or physics. It's it's kind of crazy how that

(42:07):
all works.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
Growing up in Denver did you have Were you a
Nuggets fan? Oh?

Speaker 4 (42:12):
Yeah, I was.

Speaker 22 (42:12):
I went to a bunch of the games growing up.
I was a big carmelt Anthony fan when he was.

Speaker 2 (42:17):
There for the Nuggets. You know where he went to college.
It was the Syracuse right, that's right, Yes, So I
just had to sneak out in there. What was it
about Carmelo's game that you appreciated?

Speaker 22 (42:30):
You just like, at least score it just had a
knack with scoring, you know, like you score on all
three levels. And then it was just like he was
like really big for like the Nuggets at that time,
just like you know, he's like the one of the
best players on the team.

Speaker 4 (42:42):
So it was just like really cool just growing up
watching him play.

Speaker 2 (42:44):
There. We're talking to Jalen Weaver, Bulldogs senior guard. It's
interesting you mentioned Carmelo's ability to score at all three levels,
because that's something I've seen in your game, especially this
year now that you've improved on the three and you're
shooting more of them, shooting a higher percentage. But we've
seen you attack the basket, throw down dunks, get those.

Speaker 4 (43:02):
Double clutch layups.

Speaker 2 (43:03):
But a shot that I love to see you make
is that mid range and sometimes it's going off one
foot and floating it up and other times it's that
jump stop and pivot and when you elevate, man, nobody
can stop you. How do you do that from a
complete stop jump over guys and shoot over them?

Speaker 4 (43:19):
Because I sure wish I could do that.

Speaker 22 (43:21):
You know, it's just kind of like get into like
a certain spot, feel like humfortable at like on the floor,
and then you know, just like rising up using my
athletic ability, so I rise up over the guy and
just like knock the shot down.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
So that's like what's going on through my mind? It
really is. I don't know what the percentages coach Wahlberg
would know, but it's really hard to stop you when
you're doing all three of those things at once. But
you kind of earned your playing time last year different
coaching staff with your defensive ability. A lot of guys
don't focus on defense. Was there a time in your

(43:55):
you know, career playing basketball where you realize, you know what,
I can be really good on that side of.

Speaker 22 (44:00):
Yeah, just always had that in me, like when I
was like younger, and then that's just kind of like
a funny story, just like just growing up playing aau
ball Like every time like I get like scored on
or something like a player like happens on me. Like
my mom always like gets on me, like hey, like
the dude scored on you and stuff like that. So
I just always like take like scoring like getting scored
on like personal. So I always have like high energy

(44:23):
like on that defensive end, just like lock down my men,
like make sure he doesn't score.

Speaker 4 (44:27):
And I just like carry that over all through the years.

Speaker 2 (44:31):
So your motivation for becoming a better defender was hearing
your mother's voice less during games?

Speaker 22 (44:37):
Yeah, like it'll always be like a long car ride.
Like she would like make it known and not let
this lie. Like I get like one point scored on me,
she would make it known like, yeah he scored on you.

Speaker 2 (44:46):
Like yeah, So like, well, speaking of your mother, when
we saw her in Fort Collins, she told me something
that I, you know, made sense, but I hadn't put
two and two together before. She said that, you and
Nick Clifford, who's the rams best player, a senior who's
just filling the statuet, you two played some.

Speaker 4 (45:03):
Aau ball together. Yeah, we did.

Speaker 22 (45:05):
Uh, you play au ball like probably like in middle
school for a couple of years. He's like on the
same team stuff like that, and you know he's kind
of from like a different like air from probably like
an hour apart. But yeah, we like grew up with
each other like a little bit. So yeah, we're very
familiar with each other.

Speaker 2 (45:19):
And like, yeah, so what.

Speaker 4 (45:21):
Was that like to to go up against him there
in Fort Collins?

Speaker 2 (45:23):
What you think it's gonna be like Saturday four o'clock
when he's here in your house.

Speaker 22 (45:27):
Uh, it's gonna be like it's gonna be fun, it's
gonna be competitive because you know, like just two guys
like from like the same like air kind of like
just living out there dream going out on the floor.

Speaker 4 (45:36):
They're just competing.

Speaker 2 (45:38):
So if you see him make a three or get
a block, or you know, get a breakaway and throw
down a crazy dunk, little extra motivation for you to
match that.

Speaker 22 (45:47):
Yeah, you know you got to, Like I just can't
like just see that and then like I'm just sitting
here doing nothing, So I gotta make sure I gotta
do something.

Speaker 4 (45:54):
Back for that.

Speaker 2 (45:55):
All right, So fans, if something like that happens on Saturday,
you know what to watch for from Jalen. We need
to take a quick break. We'll have more with Jalen
Weaver when we come back. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hour

Here's Weaver penetrating again all the way to the rim
and what a scoop lay up the reverse spin it
backwards off the backboard bucket for Jalen Weaver. Yeah, I
think I had to think of how to describe that
because he did something I know I couldn't do and
most of us couldn't do that. It's the acrobatic senior

(49:36):
Jalen Weaver. He and the Bulldog's host Colorado State Saturday

Speaker 2 (49:55):
Jalen and his story. We talked about growing up in Denver,
moving around a few play His favorite player growing up
was Carmelo Anthony there with the Denver Nuggets. But one
thing I've enjoyed asking some of your teammates and some
other players around the league this year Jalen, is who
was it that made you fall in love with the
game of basketball? Because I think for those of us

(50:16):
who love basketball, there's always somebody we can think of.
He said, you know that person lit the spark or
really helped me engage at a deeper level. Was there
someone that you think really fueled your love for the game. Yeah,
just I'll probably say Dereck Rose.

Speaker 22 (50:29):
I used to actually watch like a lot of like
Derreck Rose documentary is growing up and just seeing like
when he had like a little tragic injury knee injury
that happened to him, and just I didn't watch like
a lot of documentaries like what I did to him
like mentally and how he like just fall hard to
like come back and like get back to his bac
with for him and just like kind of like motivated
me to like just always go hard and always play hard.

Speaker 2 (50:51):
And have you talked to coach Wahlberg about Derek Rose?

Speaker 4 (50:54):
No, I haven't.

Speaker 2 (50:56):
Well, I think you ought to do that because coach
Wahlberg actually has a little connection to Dereck Rose and
and his effectiveness as a player with some of his
strategies that got implemented by Derek Rose's coaching staff. Okay,
for sure I might have taught the coach about that. Yeah,
maybe turn you loose the same way. Speaking of coach
wall Bergerman, you played for a different staff last year.
They're the ones that brought you to Fresno, had the

(51:17):
coaching change, and so I'm sure you had no idea
what to expect about all these new people you were
starting to meet. What have you appreciated about the new
staff and what's something that they did or have done
that has helped you adjust and become the player that
we're seeing out there on the floor.

Speaker 22 (51:36):
So I just one thing about like Airbon and the
staff this year is just they really love to win
and they love like just getting better. And that's like
really what they really like emphasize on. And that's one
thing I can really say is just like like the
day the new staff guy here, you know, just hit
the gym every day like they love being in the gym.
They loved getting better, they love working stuff like that.
So that's one thing as a player that you would

(51:58):
love with any staff and just staff, that's it's like
get on you and it's like coach you hard and
like just get you better.

Speaker 4 (52:04):
So that's what I appreciate them for.

Speaker 2 (52:07):
And they'll be coaching you up Saturday, four o'clock against
Colorado State. When when you guys were up there in Colorado,
got to see your family. I think we saw them
all at Air Force last year too, And and how
many different generations of your family did we have there?
I think the Air Force.

Speaker 22 (52:23):
Yeah, So it was my mom and dad, and then
my grandma and grandpa was there, so it was I
think my sister was there too, and I think she
was yeah, and then a couple of my mom's friends
was there. So it was really nice seeing like the
support that you can have is going into the games.

Speaker 2 (52:38):
It's really nice to see. And they make it known
that your family too.

Speaker 22 (52:41):
Yeah, now my family is really loud, like you know,
my mom's loud, like Grandma's loud. Like everybody's loud to
get into it, and that's always fun in this siding.

Speaker 2 (52:51):
Well, we already learned tonight that your mom helped you
become a better defender. And you know we were talking
was we started the show with Coach Wahlberg about this
town defense that you got as you started to play
really out of necessity. And you're a guy. I mean,
I'm just gonna say it. The last couple of years,
you're the best on ball defender on the team. So
there's nobody who can play man to man defense better

(53:11):
than you. Now we're going away from that to a zone.
How have you.

Speaker 4 (53:16):
Adjusted to that?

Speaker 2 (53:17):
And what are you appreciating about the zone that you
probably weren't dying to play.

Speaker 22 (53:21):
I'm guessing, uh yeah, one thing about appreciate about his
zone nose like kind of like easier, you know, I
don't gotta like stay in front of the ball like
guard the ball, but you still gotta like play hard
and be.

Speaker 2 (53:31):
In the right spots.

Speaker 22 (53:32):
And then I think, like, just like with my like
defensive like anything, still like me being his zone could
be effective, you know, like getting deflections, uh, shoot through lanes,
getting stills on the other ends.

Speaker 4 (53:42):
So I feel like I could still be effective in
zone as well.

Speaker 3 (53:47):
You know.

Speaker 2 (53:47):
And you guys don't run the same zone that Carmelo
Anthony ran at Syracuse for Jim Beheimen is infamous two
three zone. But one thing that it always seems teams
are caught off guard that that zone will produce steals.
And we've seen it a couple of times already, like
Elijah Price anticipating a passing land. I think you've done
the same thing a second ago, and that leads to

(54:09):
more offense. Right if you get those steals way up
high at the top of the key, then you got
numbers the other way.

Speaker 4 (54:15):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 22 (54:16):
And I feel like one thing about the zone, I
feel like like no, like no team like wants like
face like a zone like every night, Like even myself,
like just going on the zone is like kind of
like like annoying and stuff.

Speaker 4 (54:27):
So it kind of like.

Speaker 2 (54:27):
Throws the other team's rhythm off.

Speaker 22 (54:29):
So I feel like our zones, like you've been working
a lot, you know, practice, and I feel like he's
getting better and better.

Speaker 2 (54:35):
And I want to dig a little deeper on that
because I think I know what you're saying. Is it
that when you're on offense against the zone, you have
to think more. You can't just react because they're not
gonna be where you think they're gonna be.

Speaker 22 (54:46):
Yeah, like normally like zone like it's like easier, kind
of like you gotta like kind of slow the game down,
and like certain teams like can't play like the way
they want to, like they kind of have to like
adjust to how like our zone.

Speaker 4 (54:57):
So I feel like it kind of like throws teams
rhythms off.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
Another thing coach Wahlberg was hitting on earlier was that
you know the zone you're playing. One of the things
you guys really can't give up that you don't want
to give up as corner threes. And he started talking
about how much better you guys have done on corner
threes and specifically you that you're shooting in the mid
forties on that corner three. Is there something you think
has made a difference in your shot besides just more

(55:21):
playing time and more repetition. What kind of work have
you done with that perimeter shot?

Speaker 22 (55:26):
Oh yeah, just getting in a lot of shots like
before the season with Coach Welch is just you know,
just getting a bunch of makes in before and after practice.
That that been helping a lot and just like just
you know, just seeing the ball going over of course
of time, you just like build like that confidence in
you to like knock you shots down in games.

Speaker 2 (55:44):
H what's it like working with coach Welch because his
reputation is taking players and helping them become a better
player than they even knew they could be. What what's
it like working one on one with him?

Speaker 22 (55:56):
Yeah, it's a blessing working with coach well because I
feel like you really like to develop my game, like
my jump shot wise, and you know, just Coach Wes
is like a guy. He's like a gym rat. Like
he's always in the gym. He's always looking for like
this practice in He's like who wants to shoot? Like
there's like times where like I'm like tired the practice,
I'm like done.

Speaker 2 (56:13):
He's like Jayleen, come on, let's go shoot.

Speaker 22 (56:15):
So that's one thing I really appreciate about with coach
willis because you know that goes like a long way
and that like really makes you better as a player.

Speaker 2 (56:22):
But we're looking forward to the matchup Saturday four o'clock
against Colorado State. I don't know if I've ever asked
you this before. I know you're focused on basketball now
and hopefully there'll be another year in a Bulldog uniform
next year. But how much thought have you given to
what you're gonna be up to after basketball? When? Because
everybody comes to the end of the basketball road in somewhere,

(56:44):
it might be, you know, a couple of years from now,
it might be twenty years from now. Have you given
some thoughts to what paths you might want to pursue
besides basketball. Oh?

Speaker 22 (56:52):
Yeah, I've given like a little thought too. I feel
like I want them known basketball. I'll probably still since
I loved the game so much, I'll probably still like
I resolved myself around basketball. Probably like start like coaching,
start training like one of those probably like get into
that once I'm done with basketball.

Speaker 2 (57:10):
I think that would be a good career choice for you.
I can see that working out for you. Last thing, Jaylen,
We've got maybe a minute left or so. Some of
the people listening have been to a game. I know.
All the time out club folks here have been to
every game. They know, Yeah, they love you, They're gonna
be cheering for you. But for someone who hasn't been
to a Bulldog game yet this year, give them a

(57:30):
reason too.

Speaker 4 (57:31):
What are they gonna see if they show up?

Speaker 2 (57:32):
Besides Star Wars and hearing Connor do Chewbacca and cn
R two D two and the football coaches and all that,
what are they gonna see Saturday at four o'clock against
Colorado State?

Speaker 22 (57:41):
Just you know, just a fast faced game like getting out,
getting stock still, you know, playing mass, sharing the ball,
like NonStop movement, you know, shooting a lot of threes.

Speaker 2 (57:51):
Getting some dunks in there. Just just like fast faced game.
So if Nick Clifford throws down a dunk for Colorado State,
you have to throw one down for Fresno's day. Yeah,
Likene Clifford gets a dunk, and you know we just
take a ball right out ont of balance and then
go right back and get it dunk right back. Remember
that Saturday. You heard it here first. You're crowing wolf

(58:12):
on Thursday night Jalen, you're a good sport. Thanks for
hanging out, man, and he said, we'll see you Saturday
at the Save Marts Center. Huh yeah, thank you for
having me you guys Saturday.

Speaker 4 (58:20):
All right.

Speaker 2 (58:21):

the lightsaber yet, surely just showed him so he's seen it. Now.

(58:43):
momentum for the second half. Four o'clock the tip of
the Save Marts Center set three thirty. Our pregame, meet
