(00:02):
Final hour not only of today's program, but for the week, and we
bring it to you from Dallas,Texas, some two hundred miles north of
Austin, up here for Game fourof the NBA Finals tonight between the Dallas
Mavericks and the Boston Celtics, andthe Mavericks trying to stay alive and the
(00:25):
Celtics trying to win another world titleand have only their second sweep in NBA
Finals history, the other time atthe turn of the decade of the sixties
when they swept the then Minneapolis Lakers, who had a rookie named Eligend Baylor
on that team back then. That'show long ago it was, but it
(00:47):
was part of the Celtics' run ofeight straight titles, still unmatched in pro
sports history. So that's going ontonight at seven point thirty tonight, United
States Open Golf Championship going on.We'll get you a leaderboard update in a
minute here, updating you on theCollege World Series in Omaha. They are
(01:08):
still playing, but it's in thebottom of the night and North Carolina is
setting itself up for another dramatic walkoff finish. The tar Heels, who
of course had a walk off GrandSlam to beat Long Island University in their
first regional game in Chapel Hill, and then had to walk off against LSU,
(01:30):
ended up doing that to win theregional there, and then got to
walk off against West Virginia in theSuper Regional. Have the winning run at
second base with nobody out in thebottom of the ninth inning in a two
to two tie with Virginia, andthey got a lead off double and so
with a two to two tie, they have been able to advance the runner
(01:53):
to third base, Alex Madera witha sack bunt, so they have the
game winning run ninety feet away asthey bat in the bottom half of the
ninth inning. They're in Omahama thechance to win Game one again. The
winner of this game plays the winnerof tonight's game between and I say tonight,
(02:16):
it's at six o'clock the winner ofthe game between Virginia, excuse me,
between Tennessee and Florida State, butthat matchup seeded out as the tournament
selection committee set it up. It'sthe one seed against the eight seed.
This North Carolina Virginia matchup is thefour seed Carolina against the twelve seed Virginia.
(02:39):
Virginia able to advance due to winningits regional at home and then winning
the Super Regional, which they gotto host because the five seed Arkansas had
been knocked out their two losses comingto Kansas State at home and fable and
then losing to Southeast Missouri State,so they got knocked out, and so
(03:04):
Virginia got to host the super Regional. And after hosting the super Regional,
they played Kansas State. They ralliedback to win game one and then kind
of pulled away to win game two. So Virginia got a chance to host
the regional and the super Regional. They won both and advanced to Omaha to
(03:25):
take on North Carolina. And thesetwo teams pretty evenly matched all season long,
and North Carolina's had these dramatic winsboth in the regional and the super
Region. And in the regional,Carolina dropped a game to LSU, and
that's why I mentioned they were downto their final out, and in a
couple of cases their final strike,I believe, before being able to tie
(03:46):
the game and then win in anextra innings, and in the case of
the Super Regional, they got towalk off win against West Virginia in Game
one, and then they held onto win in Game two. So they're
in the bottom of the ninth inningright now with one out and the winning
run ninety feet away at third base. And as we mentioned, coming up
in a few minutes, we'll visitwith Ty Harrington to talk about this particular
(04:12):
College World Series, which for thefirst time ever features just two conferences being
represented, the SEC and the ACC. That's it and as it stands with
just those two four from the ACC, four from the SEC. I mentioned
this the other day, is thatthere's some unique I'll just put it that
(04:35):
way. There's a unique form ofsymmetry with this particular deal. Not just
because it's just the SEC and theACC and they were the two highest rated
RPI rated conferences in the country wireto wire from day one. SEC was
(04:59):
number one, ACC was number twoall season long. It's just how it
was, but also in the factthat it's split right down the middle,
and that there are four teams fromthe SEC and four teams from the ACC
that make up this field. Andthen out of that with four teams from
the SEC and four from the ACC, two of the matchups here in Omaha
(05:20):
are intra conference matchups, meaning twoteams from the same conference, and that's
what we're seeing in this first gamebetween North Carolina and Virginia, which,
by the way, a pop upfrom North Carolina produced out number two in
Virginia is an out of way fromgetting out of this and getting it to
extra innings. There is. Sothere's one intra conference matchup involving the ACC,
(05:44):
the one going on right now VirginiaNorth Carolina. There's another one tomorrow
night, the final matchup of thefirst round, and that's an all SEC
matchup Texas A and M the threeseed and the Aggies taking on an unseated
Florida team that drew a lot ofyou might say, controversy, discussion,
(06:08):
conversation, all of those things. They drew a lot of that by their
even just being selected for the field, because there were just two games above
five hundred. Now, they playedin a very, very tough conference,
the toughest in the country, butstill a lot of folks felt that they
did not merit a bid in anNCAA region and they should not have been
(06:30):
in there. Well, they gotin anyway, and they made the most
of it. They went to StillWater Oklahoma. They did lose the Saturday
night game to Oklahoma State. OklahomaState was two to zero in the Winner's
bracket, needing only one win towrap it up. Well, Florida came
through the elimination bracket and managed tobeat Nebraska to eliminate the Huskers, and
(06:53):
then one Sunday night over Oklahoma Statefive to two, and then came back
on Monday afternoon and had to winone more time than they did. They
beat them four to two. Thenthey went to Clemson to play the number
six overall see Clemson, and theywon that one in two straight to win
it. By the way, it'sjust ended in Omaha, a Vance Huneycutt,
(07:14):
who has been mister clutch throughout thepostseason for North Carolina, came through
with a two out RBI single toleft that scored the game winning run from
third and North Carolina does defeat Virginiathree to two. So the Target Hills
in the winner's bracket will play thewinner of the Tennessee Florida State game on
Sunday Night. The loser of thatTennessee Florida State game will face Virginia in
(07:38):
an elimination game on Sunday afternoon. All right, up next, we'll talk
some more about this College World Series. We'll visit with Ty Harrington, our
baseball correspondent, one of our broadcastteam members, and of course, for
twenty years, the head coach atTexas State. But Ty, of course
played at Texas and he's played andcoached in Omaha. We'll get his thoughts
(07:59):
on that whole environment as well whenwe continue from Dallas here on Sports Radioium
