Speaker 1 (00:00):
We talked football in the state of Texas, both from
the collegiate in high school variety with Greg Tepper, managing
editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
He might be a young.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Man, but he has an old soul and he has
an appreciation for such Texas based music.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Do you not. Yeah, I don't think you can work
here without without that.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
That's kind of part of the vetting process when you're
interviewing with Dave Campbell's Texas Football. Is there just you know,
ask your general opinion on a lot of Texas artists.
So yeah, I think that that that's a that's an
important and important part of the Texana ness of being here.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Dave Campbell's all right, So here's another important thing. This
is how we know that football is reaching its critical
mass element when if anybody that goes to the Texas
Football website at Texas Football dot com and you read
Corey Hoag's breakdown on tiebreaker scenarios in Division three. Oh yeah, yeah,
(00:56):
with the with the American Southwest Conference and the Southern
Athletic Association's that's some pretty intense stuff he's getting into
because it actually kind of mirrors what happens in Texas
high school football tie breaks.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah, it is, and we are getting into that territory
now where you know, there's a lot of talk obviously
about Texas and A and M and stuff like that,
but it's important to remember that here Dave Campbell's we
cover all forty eight college football teams across the state
of Texas. So yes, Trinity's big win over Barry this
past week was significant. And by the way, if you
(01:30):
look on Texas Football dot Com and you take a
look at our heat in decks where we rank the
forty eight college football teams in the state of Texas,
you will notice that the number one team is in
Texas or Texas A and M, or even a team
like SMU or even a team like Angelo State. No,
it's Hardened Simmons. Hardened Simmons is fifteen fourteen to one
of their last fifteen games, and the Cowboys are rolling.
(01:51):
So yeah, you know, we cover football, you know, stem
to stern, and I know that Corey Hoague is really
the tip of the spear when it comes to the
non FBS side of it, and he's got his hands
full this time of year because Texas has got some
real good depth of talent outside of the FBS ranks
and within the FBS ranks.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Talking to football here in the lone Star state with
Greg Temper, let's keep it in the college room for
a moment. I say this tongue in cheek. Nobody's done
a mental health check on Jeff Trailer this week after
they had a thirty five to seven third quarter lead
get away at Tulsan and los forty six to forty five,
(02:31):
and it was forty two seventeen, wasn't it with about
six minutes to go in the third quarter.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
You know, I was thinking about this because one of
the things about Jeff Trailer is that obviously he's done
fantastic stuff there at at UTSA, but I would be
hard pressed to find the last time he had kind
of a losing season as a whole, because you know,
(03:00):
you go back to even his his high school football
days where he was absolutely sensational. I mean, he's forty
two and nineteen as a college football head coach. He's
never had a losing record at UTSA, And then you
go back to his head coaching days when he was
at Gilmer, never had a losing record there, and he's
been coached. He's been a head coach since two thousand,
(03:21):
obviously a stop at Staff's at Texas and SMU in
Arkansas before that. But for Jeff Trailer, this is this
is un this is territory that he is not trodden
down at all, simply because you know, the road Runner
are struggling. We wondered what they were gonna look like
without Frank Harris. Obviously they're still trying to figure that out.
But but it was the defense that really let them
(03:42):
down this year. But it's just it springs to mind
like this is a guy who's not used to losing.
And I would imagine I haven't texted him recently, but
I would imagine he's not particularly enjoying it in that regard.
I think he probably prefers the whole winning state championships
and conference championships part of Well.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
He'll certainly be reminded of that next next May when
he's inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
That's that's for sure, and well deserved of that.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
The keeping this in the states take You called this,
You called this weeks ago. You called this before the
start of the season. You said, Mike Bloomgren's job was
definitely going to be on the line at Rice, and
it ended up with Rice making the change. Seven years
there in charge of the Alice got into a couple
of bowl games but never had a winning record. That's
(04:34):
that weird dynamic that can happen when because of their academics,
which is so good, they were able to land Bullberts
at five and seven records and then losing the bowl game,
or even when win still having the the losing record,
and it's.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
That's a tough job. It's just it's just a tough job,
isn't it. My My my colleague Mike Craven, I think
put it really well.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
He said that he raised the floor at Rice, but
he never on the ceiling, which is probably the truth.
I mean, you think BacT David Bailiff was able to
win conference championships there back in the earlier earlier part
of the century.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
You know, you can win there.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
But but I would make the argument to you that
Rice may be the toughest FBS head coaching job in Texas.
You know, I think people might look at a place
like UTEP obviously way out there in West Texas and
certainly has not been the kind of powerhouse that they
would like to be. But I would make the argument
(05:31):
to you that at UTEP you are theoretically drawing from
a larger talent pool than you are at Rice. Because
at Rice, because of the academic standards, you are already
cutting the number of players that you can recruit by
sixty percent, by seventy percent. And then, by the way,
you're gonna have to fend off all the other teams
that want to get these guys who are high academic
(05:53):
achievers and also happen to be excellent at football.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
It's a tough it's a tough thing.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
And and and you know, I like Bloomgrim. He's a
guy that that we really got to know here at
Dave Campbell's a guy who I think really ingratiated himself
to the tech to Texas culture.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
He's not a Texan. I mean, he came folks who
don't remember he was.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
He was the offic coordinator at Stanford, which felt like
just a real natural fit to go from Stanford to Rice.
I do wonder where they go from here. I I
know we've got a job board up on Texas football
dot Com of guys who who could be that guy Uh.
But but I would say that you know, you look for.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Uh, I'm I'm.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
I'm of the belief of the the ex girlfriend theory
that like when you break up with somebody, you go
for somebody exactly the opposite, And so I would look
for a defensive minded person with with good Texas ties,
deep Texas ties, and maybe they've got one on their
staff and former North Shore head coach John k uh
that's certainly a guy who's who's uh, but who has
(06:52):
succeeded at the highest level of Texas high school football
before jumping to the Rice staff. We'll see it is
a new offensive coordinate or a new athletic director there.
So I wonder if he's going to want to make
his own his his his statement and had put his
stamp on the program. So uh, it stinks because because
we've gotten a no bloom and we think he's he's
a good dude, and I thought he did some really
good things at Rice, but playing simple is a hard
(07:13):
place to win.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
He didn't do enough of it.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
I find it interesting on Mike Craven's piece where he
breaks it down into the categories of big swing, realistic,
and wildcard. The wildcard he mentioned you were just talking
about John k And and you know, I was thinking
about John and I thought, if if he doesn't land
an opportunity, uh to land on a collegiate staff somewhere.
(07:38):
Obviously there the line of schools, high schools in Texas
I would love to hire him would be long. Uh,
They'd love to have him back at the high school
level if it happens that way. The big swing thing
Casey Keeler, of course has done a good job at
at at Sam Houston.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
He's going to have him in a bowl game this year.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
And then will Stein, I mean, gosh, I just I'm
just remembering will Stein Reese la'zy the offensive corner at
Lake Travis and now our heres the offensive coordinator for
the number one college football team in the country at Oregon,
and a guy that could be it could be a
really big boost for them if he's if he feels
he's ready for his first head coaching job. I mean,
he's he's thirty five, so he would be one of
(08:17):
the younger coaches in college football. But at the same time,
he's already established himself as one of the most the
most well known and respected minds in offensively. Uh, in
college football obviously leading you know Oregon's offense right now.
We'll see because there may be maybe one of those
things where bigger offers may come down the pike for him,
(08:38):
and so would he go to jump to Rice to
get back to Texas?
Speaker 2 (08:42):
That would be something interesting here.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
I look at a guy maybe like Tim Beck, not
that Tim Beck, the other Tim Beck, uh the first
year offensive coordinator Vanderbilt, who could be the guy. He's
a guy who's got ties to Vanderbilt because because.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
His his Tommy McCallum, the new athletic director, came from Vanderbilt.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Another guy Vanderbilt ties is Derek Mason if he wants
to get back in the head coaching job.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
That's a name to know.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
And then another name to throw out there is Tyler Santucci.
Tyler Santucci is the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, which
obviously high academic standards there. He used to be the
co defensive coordinator at Texas A and M, so he's
got some ties there. It'll be interesting to see where
Rice lands, because there's there's a a fit that you
have to understand what you're getting into and understand the
(09:31):
the unique nature of the Rice job, and we'll see
which direction that Tommy mcclon decides to go.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Talking football in the state of Texas, Greg Tepper from
Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Right, let's shift to high school.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
And uh, you know, I joked the other night when
I was doing the zoom thing with you guys about
the line from the Who song you know we won't
get fooled again. Meet the new ball, same as the
old boss. Ah. I think that certainly applies to Northshore
finding a way to be a task ASDA off of that,
and then b to get to your state wide rankings.
(10:08):
And looky, looky, look who's back at number one in
the state and five A Division two for you be
those South Oakliff Golden Bears.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Two losses notwithstanding, yeah, more the more things changed, more
they stay the same. And and certainly, you know, you
look at north Shore and the Task Asda and it
was a heart stopping game, the game the kind of
game we anticipated seeing from these two teams. And I
might I've been working on this and rolling around in
my head. I could be convinced that those are the
(10:36):
two best teams in six A this year and therefore
the two best teams in the state is a Task
in north Shore. Uh And it was a fantastic ball
game that we may get another time, we may get
in a regional final. And remember Northshore has now beaten
a task ASDA nine times in a row, which is
just inconceivable considering how good a task ASDA has been.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
And then yeah, you had five a Division two.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
You know, first of all, a moment for Nederland head
coach Scott Rich in his first year there at Nederland
has goes and gets the biggest win for Nederland in.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
A decade plus.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
I mean, to go on the road to your arch
rival and as according to the computer, a twenty one
point underdog, to go out there and knock off the
reigning state champs. I mean, I've never been the most
I've never been the most popular person in any town.
So I wonder how Scott Rich feels, because that is,
he could run for mayor right now his election season
(11:36):
and he would win with one hundred percent of the
vote in Nederland right now. But as a result with
PNG losing, and certainly there were signs of cracks in
that foundation a little bit that I think Nederland did
a good job of exposing. Now we'll be up to
Jeff Joseph to make sure that they shore up before
the playoffs. But as a result they they tumbled down
to number nine and back up to the number one spot.
(11:58):
Is South o'cliff, a team that of course took their
lumps early, taking on you know, North Shore and Duncanville before,
you know for getting things together, But it's one of
those North is one of those teams that we kind
of forget about for about seven weeks because they're just
a lot better than their district. Lbj kind of fits
into that category two of a team that, like we
paid attention to the non district they again the district
play was like okay, we'll see you like the second
(12:18):
round of the playoffs. But it's important to note that
for both Lbjim and for South Oak Left, they're playing
exceptional ball right now and certainly worthy of your attention
when the playoff brackets come out in a near.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Ten days or so.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Mm hmmm, uh fill in the blank for me on
this one, shy of state championship week, the biggest threat
to Duncanville in the postseason would be I would say,
probably in a semi final matchup with North Crowley that
(12:53):
probably looks like the biggest threat to them. But I
will also say that you know, if you are of THELF,
that Duncanville is a really good team, but not a
world beater. I think that there are some teams within
Region two that can give them a challenge. I think
if they were to run into a team like Bridgeland,
I'm very interested to see what would happen there, because Bridgeland,
(13:15):
I think, can go score for score with them. I'm
interested in a team like the Woodlands, which could give
them some challenge. But I think that most likely you
would probably look at the team to come out of
Region one, likely North Crowley, maybe a team like Allen.
Maybe a team I don't think cup Hell can match
up with well with Duncanville, but North Crowley certainly could
from a firepower perspective. Outside of a state championship game,
(13:38):
then yeah, I think for Duncanville, their biggest threat would
come in a state semifinal against the winner of Region one,
probably North Crowley, but maybe Allen.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Okay, all right, now fill in this playing for me.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Without question, the team that poses the biggest threat to
De Soto in sixth A Division two, regardless of region is.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Oh boy, I think De Soto faces a significant challenge
almost every step of the way, starting essentially in the
third round. You could have a third round matchup with Willis,
and I'll tell you that if you think Willis was
just DJ Lagway, you should go see what they're doing
right now. This is arguably a better, more complete Willis
(14:22):
team that they could see Thanksgiving weekend. You follow that
up with maybe a matchup with a team like Longview
or Spring Westfield, which is not gonna be a pushover.
And then in a semi final, they could see a
team like South Lake Carrol, they could see a team
like prosper There are a lot I think there's a
lot of land mines for De Soto. And then if
they were to make it to another state championship game,
(14:42):
you think they could see a team like Westlake, or
you think Summer Creek would like another shot at Desto.
I think what happened last year where they got they
got demolished in front of a national audience. Oh yeah,
Summer Creek, which has looked exceptional oh year long, and
took a task see into the wire they would love
an other shot at the Soto. So I think the
Division two bracket actually after kind of very desperately from
(15:08):
last year where the sixth A Division two felt like
they're real, Like, okay, it's kind of the Soto or
versus the field. I think Division two has a chance
to be the more entertaining six A bracket simply because
of the challengers to the Soto team that is still
very good and certainly worthy of being the team to beat,
but I think is gettable when the playoffs roll around.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
All right, let me throw some games at you, and
you pick one, and you tell me which one that
you would most like to be at. You could choose
between Lancaster Waksatchi, you could choose between College Station and Weiss,
or you could have Graham Brock.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
What would you do?
Speaker 3 (15:54):
It's probably oh man, I'll tell you what what I
would probably do is do the the the double dip,
because I believe College Station Weiss is on the Thursday
night of the field, so I might go there first
because I'm really interested in this game, because uh, this
is for a home playoff game. Assuming game of consolidated
wins that district. The winner of this game gets a
(16:15):
home playoff game. And for Weiss, the growth of Jackson Shadd,
their freshman quarterback, is remarkable. It's important to remember that
we thought like Weiss had a chance to be really
good until their senior quarterback got hurt in the in
the in the scrimmage.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
And we were like, okay, well nice year, wis sorry.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Instead, Jackson Chad has really taken the reins and played
exceptionally well. Going up against the college station team that
has looked to the part basically outside of a rivalry,
lost to a consolidated of a of one of the
teams to be huge game there. But then I think
it's Graham and Brock is the answer to the question
simply because this is a brought for Brock there.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
This is their big test as a four A program.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Uh And this is also the number one versus number
two scoring defenses in for A Division two. Graham's the
number one scoring defense in four Division two. Brock is
the number two scoring defense. These two teams are going
to lay the lumber at one another. It is going
to be physical, It's going to be a great atmosphere
there at newton Field and Graham. I'm really interested in
seeing if Brock can pass this next big test for
(17:17):
them after passing all their tests so far with flying colors.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
This is there.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
This is the game we've had circled as like, all right,
we'll find out what a four A Brock really looks
like starting this week, no.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
He's Greg Tepper, managing editor or Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
Follow him on x slash Twitter at Tepper and he
and Aaron Hard again, will you be joined by me?
I'll be back in the studio with you guys on
Friday night for high school scoreboard.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
So look forward to that.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Thank goodness, because because let me tell you something, Craig,
whenever you're and I think I don't know if you've
ever been on a scoreboard when I'm gone, maybe like
whenever one.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Time, but baby, my kids came.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Yeah, yeah, my kids came in the middle of the night.
But dude, the amount of hawking that I do when
you're not there, Oh my gosh, I feel like I'm
just yapping constantly.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
So thank god you're back.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Okay, all right, when there one time you tested positive,
I did, but remember I zoomed, I zoomed in.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Oh yeah, you zoomed in.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
So your so your so your germs only went to
your to your laptop, so that was good. Yeah, Hey,
I appreciate tap. We'll see you on Friday.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
See you guys. All right, that's.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Great tap for managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
By the way, apropos of this people should keep track of.
There are two games in this area. Keep your eye
on this week booie Austin High uh this week and
then next week McNeil huddo, because not only might it
(18:51):
determine who gets into the playoffs, but it could also
shift the balance of who goes Division one and Division two,
whether Westlake goes Division one or Division two, and the
same thing might happen in twenty five six A as well.
It could be really interesting to follow. All Right, more
coming up on Sports Medio AM thirteen under the Zone.
