(00:00):
We welcome you back to our coverageof SEC Football Media Day's final hour of
coverage this week from here in Dallas, the Football Media Day. Certainly it's
just really kind of kicking off theofficial coverage of the Texas Longhorns as a
member of the Southeastern Conference now.And it's and it took me on Sunday,
(00:21):
Cameron, when we came into thisroom for the first time, so
in the afternoon, to get thetable set up, find out where we
were located, and beginning to setup equipment and testings out a little bit
and looking and I'm just looking ata lot of the logos and then there's
the SEC logo, and there's thekickoff Media Day logo. There's the banners
as it just means more, there'sthe banners is sixteen strong. And then
(00:43):
I looked at that wheel logo thatthey have with all the spokes of it,
and then and then it did hitme looking at it, seeing Texas
on there, seeing Oklahoma there,Texas at about the position of ten o'clock
on a clock, Oklahoma at theposition of about eight o'clock o'clock. It
goes in alphabet order at about oneo'clock would be Alabama and just rolling it
(01:07):
all through alphabetically after that. Sofinally all of this stuff starting to sync
in a little bit. I'm justkind of curious about what this is going
to be like once they open conferenceplay and go on the road for a
conference thing. Now, it's goingto be a little bit different for Texas
than it might be, say forOklahoma in going on the road for the
(01:30):
first time, because the first timethe log Worns play a conference game away
from DKR Texas Memorial Stadium will bein this town. It'll be the Red
River Rivalry matchup with Oklahoma. Thatwill be after they open conference play on
September twenty eighth against Mississippi State. That game will be in Austin, and
(01:53):
then they'll be off the first oftheir two open dates, and then they
will transition from that on end totheir first game away from DKR, and
that of course will be as Imentioned here in Dallas, their first conference
(02:13):
game against Oklahoma. Then they're athome against Georgia. So the first true
road, real conference game in theSEC will be October twenty sixth in Nashville
at Vanderbilt. So that'll be alittle bit different. Now they would still
have a road trip to Arkansas andobviously A and M, and we've talked
about that being kind of the oddityof the schedule involved here. Yeah,
(02:37):
for me, I have felt likethe SEC schedule will really begin for Texas
and start to feel like the SECis at Georgia game. Yes, I
feel like even with Mississippi State andhey, they might come into DCR in
upset Texas and if that happens, that's okay, Hey there's your welcome to
the SEC. But even with Oklahomain Week two, it's going to be
(02:58):
a very tough game. Obviously Oklahomabeats the last season Brett Fennables a year
a number three, that'll still justfeel like a normal game because at Texas
Oklahoma have been playing for so long. But Georgia I think will be very
new for Texas, even Vanderbilt. But then once you get into the thick
of it with Florida in Kentucky, then I think Texas fans will be like,
Okay, this is different. There'sno more Iowa States, no more
(03:20):
Balors, no more TCUs. It'sa completely new world. Yeah, for
sure. By the way, likeI said, Oklahoma's feel might be different.
Yeah, no, kidding, becausetheir first conference game is at Auburn
on September twenty eighth. Now,they open conference play at home against Tennessee,
but their first road game will beat Auburn. Then they get Texas.
(03:44):
Oklahoma, by the way, incase you needed a reminder, will
be the designated home team for theRed River rivalry matchup because Texas is always
the home team on odd number yearsand Oklahoma the home team on the even
number of years, and Oklahoma doeshave some road destinations to hit in the
(04:04):
SEC. They go to Auburn onSeptember twenty eight, they go to Old
Miss on October twenty sixth, theygo to Missouri on October ninth, and
they close the regular season at LSU. So they've got some tough road games.
Their home games are all very verymanageable, other than say the Alabama
(04:26):
game on the twenty third, that'sa tough one. All in Tennessee won't
be a gimme by any stretch.Obviously, Tennessee is expected to be good
as well, but their other homegames are Temple, Houston, Tulane,
and then, like I said,Tennessee, they open with four consecutive home
games and after the Auburn and Texasgames. You know, at Auburn and
(04:46):
Texas Here in Dallas, they haveSouth Carolina at home, then they go
to Ole Miss, then they playMaine. Yeah, Maine, the Black
Bears at home, at Missouri,Alabama home, and at l s U.
So it's gonna be a challenging schedulefor that. Uh. The Atlon's
folks are picking them to finish eighthin the SEC. Remember that that there
(05:12):
will be no divisions. They'll justtake the top two off of that.
And and uh, I was alittle surprised by some of the they're they're
picking Alabama fourth in the SEC becausethey're picking Ole Miss third in the SEC,
Texas number two, Georgia number one, uh. Off of that,
Missouri they're picking number five. Uh. And Missouri is supposed to be good
(05:34):
in L s U number six offof that. So something to keep in
mind there. But uh, butit will be it will be quite the
adjustment for Oklahoma from the perspective ofthe road games that they have to deal
with. They may be a sleepinggiant in this conference tream because a lot
of this course has been surrounded about. Texas seems to be prepared for the
(05:59):
jump to the se SEE, butOklahoma not so much. Now. On
one hand, going into this conference, the one thing that you really need
to have a strengthen is the offensiveline and defensive line, and for Texas
at least on the defensive line, that's a big strength Oklahoma and Oklahoma fans
and media members will tell you theold line for Oklahoma is a weakness this
year and a lot of the battlesin the trenches are won, especially in
(06:21):
this conference. But Fennable has donea good job recruiting, did a good
job in the transfer portal, obviouslybeat Texas this past season, had a
better win record in year two thanSark did. And look at the jump
Sark had in the year two theyear three. So I've heard people talk
about Oklahoma could end up being thenext Nebraska, and maybe that's the case,
but I feel like all of thisnegative attention Oklahoma, they might end
(06:46):
up being asleeping giant here Craig Well, And like I said, as far
as what folks thinking, Oklahoma's pickedeighth in the SEC, Texas A and
M has picked ninth in the SEC. And incidentally, just just so you'll
you know know this, and I'veheard the same rumblings that you have with
(07:11):
regard to Oklahoma and how they mightbe the next Nebraska. Nebraska went five
and seven last year. They pickedseventh in the preseason publication athlone, seventh
in the Big Ten. Big Tenmedia Days, by the way, will
be next week and also the ACCBig Ten or in Indianapolis. ACC will
(07:38):
take place in Charlotte, the ACCmedia Days, so those will take place,
and I think the American Athletic Conferencesnext week in Jerry World in Arlington.
I think that's that's happening next week. So there's a lot happening there,
with more media days still to comein college football and college football conferences
(07:59):
as well. All right, upnext, we'll let you hear a little
bit from Sam Pittman, the Arkansashead coach, but we have our conversation
with Greg McElroy of ESPN. He'llbe with us next as we continue here
from SEC Football Media Days here inDallas. We'll do that on Sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of theiHeartRadio app.
