Speaker 1 (00:00):
Opening day for college baseball across the country and your
Texas Longhorns in action tonight at the Shriners Children's College
showdown in Arlington, Texas at Globe Live Field, and you
can hear all Texas baseball right here on thirteen hundred
the Zone, six forty five pm airtime, seven o'clock first pitch.

(00:22):
Craig Way and Keith Morland will be on the call
this week in Texas opening their season against Louisville and
Craig getting set up right now at Globe Live Field
where he will join us and host the remainder of
today's show. But gon ahead and just get you guys started.
A fantastic weekend ahead on the forty acres and a
big win last night for Texas basketball. We will take

(00:44):
a look at the Longhornons victory over Kentucky last night,
a top ten showdown eighth R in Kentucky. On the
heels the Longhorns big upset victory over number two South Carolina.
A lot of potential for a trap game, you might say,
especially on the road in Lexington on a Thursday night,

(01:04):
and it was a neck and neck game at halftime,
and then Texas came firing out in the third quarter,
would go up by twenty points entering the fourth. Kentucky
would make a late run at the end of the
beginning of the fourth quarter. In fact, would score twelve
ten straight consecutive points to start that fourth quarter, fixed
sate for to call a time out, and Texas would
reclaim their twenty point advantage. Would end up winning that

(01:26):
game sixty seven to forty nine as the Longhorns improved.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Was it down ten and one?

Speaker 1 (01:32):
I believe in in conference play, tied with South Carolina
at top the SEC standings for first place, and well,
now you get Kim Molke in the LSU Tigers on
Sunday eleven to one.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
As a matter of fact, the LSU, who is number.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Five in the country ten and one, their only lost
came to South Carolina in Columbia, will be here Sunday,
and I don't know. I'm more interested obviously a fantastic game,
But what will Kim Molke wearing. I told Kathy Arson,
who of course is our analyst on Texas women's basketball
this season. I'm guessing leather. Kim Okie always has some

(02:09):
sort of theme for each game, whether it's the Sparkles
or the pink or the snake skin whatever, Texas Longhorn.
I think she's gonna go after Bevo. I think we're
gonna see some leather in, some outlandish leather on Sunday.
But again, that'll be a really fun game at Moody Center.
If you're looking for something to do on Sunday, come

(02:30):
out and support the women's basketball team. Another top five
showdown at Moody number three Texas, number five LSU in airtime.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
For that leave tip off.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Just double check this tip off for Sunday's game against
fifth ranked LSU. That'll be at two o'clock, So one
forty five airtime on one O three one FM, two
o'clock tip off time at Moody Center. Just what three
home games left for women's basketball, three for men's basketball.
So get your fixed in now before the postseason starts.

(03:03):
As Texas women's basketball looks to make some damage. And
I went on Sunday and then they get their midweek break,
and I know this Texas team is really looking for
a break. They have had a very tough schedule, but
so far have been playing phenomenal basketball. Matty Booker was
sensational last night and again some great minutes from Kyle

(03:24):
o'dacres shield the team with points at halftime. She grew
up not too far away from Lexican Kentucky, of course,
from leave Mason, Ohio, and Texas now on a fantastic
win streak since they're loss to South Carolina. They've beaten
number eight Maryland, number seventeen, TENNESSEEE, number twenty four, Vanderbilt,
number two, South Carolina in number eight Kentucky face fifth

(03:46):
ranked LSU. Then they had that midweek by and then
able to take a breath last three games of the season,
two tough road games at Georgia, at Mississippi State, and
then they closed with Florida's Actually sorry, only two home
games left for women's basketball. Just two home games left
for women's basketball, but a little bit more of a
breather for the Texas women's basketball team, And the same

(04:07):
can be said for the men's side, who will face
Kentucky tomorrow in a game that I don't know if
you want to glabel it must win to make the
Inside Tournament. But looking at the last couple of games
and how Texas kind of limping into this game in
the mall with so many injuries on with the Von
Pryor and Kenda Weaver and Arthur Kaluma who got banged
up again in the loss earlier this week to Alabama.

(04:31):
This Texas team is looking for a huge win the
booster tournament chances, and tomorrow could be that game again.
It's a very good Mark Pope team. The Wildcats, who
have had some up and downs so far this season,
but lately coming in have been playing some fantastic basketball
in the Southeastern Conference.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Beat in Tennessee, I believe twice.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Now currently at six and five in conference play, fifteenth
ranked overall, back to back wins including win over South Carolina.
So hoping that Kentucky might come in tomorrow, you know,
maybe not completely locked into this game, especially with Texas
coming off a tough loss to Alabama. Would be huge
to Rodney Terry and the Longhorns. They'll pull out a

(05:12):
win to help improve their resume and their tournament chances
going forward. The end of the schedule kind of like
the women's team, a little bit easier on the men's
side of things, if you're is such a thing in
the SEC. They get the midweek buy after Saturday and
then travel to South Carolina. Arkansas Georgia, seb Be State, Oklahoma.

(05:33):
So just one top twenty five team remaining after their
game against Kentucky tomorrow. So overall six games left, two
against top twenty five teams. The Longhorns can find a way.
They go four and two, possibly you know, five and one,
they will find themselves playing in March. But not only that,
if you can go above five hundred and these last

(05:54):
six games, you know, build up the confidence with your
team going into the NCAA Tournament. Also in the SEC Tournament,
and the way this SEC Men's Tournament is scheduled sixteen teams,
there's what four games on the first day if you're
in the bottom eight of the league. So Longhorns likely
will be playing on that first day of the SEC

(06:16):
Tournament in not a bad thing. I mean, Mississippi State
right now would also be playing on the first day.
And they're a top twenty five team, they're ranked twenty
second in the country. It shows you how deep this
conference is. Vanderbilt also in the bottom made Arkansas, who's
good team.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Guys.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
You know they started off slow, beat up on Texas,
but that's a team that's starting to play some really
good basketball. Obviously, we know a lot about coach cow
a team to watch out for. But if Texas can
find a way to close out the last bit of
February and early part of March on the right side
of some games, get a winn or two in Nashville,

(06:51):
you know they could do some damage in the UNCA Tournament.
But tomorrow will be a good indicator where this team
is at against a very good Kentucky team. All that also,
Texas Softball underway and they are making their home opener
today the Bevo Classic just down the road from us.
That begins, I believe three forty five today. You can

(07:13):
hear that on KHFIHT three. Just search Retro Austin on
your iHeart radio app. Andrew Haynes will have the call.
As Texas Softball, who begin the season perfect six to
zero with the Louisiana Classic, the UHLU Tournament, and then
the Bearcat Classic, open up against Maryland today four o'clock,
first pitch. That'll be a doubleheader, followed by their all

(07:36):
Big twelve rival, Texas Tech six p thirty scheduled first pitch.
Of course, with these softball tournaments, yeah, you're always going
to have a bit of a delay, so Maryland Texas
Tech Today, Tomorrow you Mass and Maryland a doubleheader that'll
be starting at four o'clock, and then Texas Tech on Sunday,

(07:57):
twelve thirty first pitch as a long core Horns will
face Texas Tech for the second time this weekend.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
So again you're in.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
Austin and all, it's a little bit chilly outside, but
go ahead taken some Texas softball at Red and Charlene
McCombs Field, and then of course Texas Baseball beginning this
weekend at the Shriners Children's College Showdown Louisville today, Ole
Miss tomorrow seven pm, and then Oklahoma State Sunday at
six point thirty. Can hear all three games in all

(08:26):
Texas baseball games this season on thirteen hundred the Zone. Craigway,
Keith Marlin, Roger Wallace up there in Arlington for the tournament.
Craigway and Keith will have the call today. Craig will
travel back to Austin tomorrow for Texas Men's and women's basketball,
so Keith Morland and Roger Wallace will be on the
call Saturday and Sunday as Longhorns begin their first season

(08:47):
with coach Jim Schlosnegel, and I believe coach Slosh has
his rotation set. Looks like Jared Spencer will start tonight
for long Corns. The left handed trans her from Indiana
State and Louisville will be starting Patrick Forbes for the
Cardinals at the Longhorns begin their baseball season. Craig Way

(09:09):
will join us a little bit later on in today's show.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Up.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Next, we are going to visit or rather hear from
Texas women's basketball coach Ficic Schaeffer as the Craigway Show
on this Friday afternoon is just getting underway. On thirteen
hundred the zone.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Texas trying to get the lead back. Here's Preston. Brie
floats it down to old egger running the floor and
she knocks it down. Texas with the one point lead
in the ball three minutes ago. Preston hesitation contact pull
up jumper is good.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
Yeah, the hesitation got her free, just kind of froze
the defender.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
First split second, Brie taking it to the bucket. Fade
away in and out and in.

Speaker 5 (09:49):
Yeah, Brie is getting really deep into the paint off
of the.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Dribble Booker on the move down the paint lays it
up and in first points for Booker.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Yeah, that is where Booker is at her bess right
there in the open floor, grabs the rebound and takes
off with the basketball.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Five point lead again for Texas. One nine to go
here in the second quarter, ten seconds to go here,
Booker now makes her move, gets a screen, Booker crossover,
baseline jumper. Good. Three in a row. Four seconds to
go and Tyler gets it off and it's off the mark.
What a finish for Madison Booker and Texas goes to

(10:26):
the half with their biggest lead of the game, thirty
three to twenty five. Booker gets it down on the block,
goes up count the basket. She's vowed Madison Booker with
an end one opportunity, She's hit her last five shots
from the field, arm and wide open. Drops it down
to Taylor Jones who lays it in and gets Vould again.
What an unselfish play by Rory Harmon.

Speaker 6 (10:46):
She had a wide.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
Open fifteen footer, but instead an and one opportunity for
Jones and Texas is up by twenty. Rory driving on Amore,
backs it in, turns around twelve footer is good. Oh,
what a big time for her first basket.

Speaker 5 (11:01):
Yeah, what a great answer by Roy Harmer. Little fade
away right here, Kipper dribble live enough to be able
to get the shots she wanted.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
Now Jordan Lee does not take the three, She'll get
to the baseline Booker. That baseline jumper is good.

Speaker 5 (11:13):
Yeah, great job by Booker.

Speaker 4 (11:15):
Great patience by Shay Holly to get her the basketball
down on the baseline.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
Now, Booker, baseline jumper, it's good. Back to back from
book She has fifteen and the lead is back to eighteen.
Sixty seven forty nine. Long Horns can just dribble this
thing out. What an impressive win on the road against
the eighth ranked team in the country to hold on
to their piece of first place and move to eleven
and one.

Speaker 6 (11:39):
In sec play.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
Impressive indeed, as a third rank long Horns held off
Kentucky and pulled away for a sixty seven to forty
nine victory at the Believe. It's called the historic Memorial
Call of sem in Leshton. In fact, Kentucky led at
one point in the second quarter, Texas led by two points.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
After one frame.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
UK led in the second quarter, Texas pulled away would
end up holding eight point lead at halftime and then
just came out firing the third quarter, stretched to lead
the twenty points going into the fourth quarter. Kentucky would
come out with a strong two minute burst to begin
the final frame, but the Longhorns after a timeout would

(12:20):
get back in front. Matty Booker with some clutch buckets,
Kyle Oldacre just unstoppable, and the Longhorns would win sixty
seven to forty nine. And I believe their first ever
game in Lexington, not just first ever game as SEC
Conference upunts, but first ever game in Lexington. So historic,
truly historic at the historic Memorial Coliseum. Nineteen points from

(12:41):
Madison Booker, nineteen points for Kylin Oldacre, fifteen points for
Taylor Jones, Lindsay Wisdom. Hilton, the Longhorns assistant coach, visited
postgame with Roger Wallace and Kathy Arston after the.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Win, where as you work with the Biggs and boy
did they show up tonight?

Speaker 7 (12:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (12:58):
Can you hear me? All right? Yeah, I'm so out
of them.

Speaker 8 (13:00):
Maybe it's just playing really really well together. It's kind
of like a one two punch. No matter who you
got in, they're just gonna battle down and just wear
the other team out and that's the goal, and you're
able to get their bigs in trouble. I worried about
the agility and the ability for their posts to shoot
and spread the floor out, but I think we did
a great job covering them, and then we dominated in
the paint.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
And then the tag team effort with Taylor and Kyla.
I mean, Taylor does a lot of work early and
then Kyla just has a great finish to the first half.

Speaker 8 (13:25):
Yeah, like you said, when one comes out, you got
another one coming in. So I feel sorry for a
lot of other teams post players because I gotta deal
with it. And so I'm just so blessed that we
have great post players to work with. And then we
obviously want to play through our posts inside out game
when they're problem to paint, our guards on the outside
being be able to knock down the shot, and they
can they make good reads. One of the best plays
for me today, I'm going off script, but when Rory

(13:46):
passed up an open shot to come in wonderable lob
it up to Taylor for an and one. I mean,
that's just great team basketball.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
And then they scored ten points in under two minutes
and all of a sudden this place is into it,
and then you go on to ten, Oh run?

Speaker 6 (13:58):
What does that say about your club?

Speaker 8 (14:00):
Was always a game of runs, But I think we've
grown so much of this season. When other teams make
a run, we don't fold, and we don't you know,
get scared or nervous anything. We just turned the page
and then we make our own run. And that's definitely
what happened to night.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
And then the gauntlet continues Sunday with that un here
we go stops Thanks.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
Coach long Wards did a great job and stopping Georgia More,
the Kentucky standout guard who just had fourteen points on
five or sixteen shooting. We're seeing this Texas team defensively
really hone in the lock in on the opponent's best player.
We saw it with Say Green in Alabama. Even Mkilla
Blake at Vanderbilt did a fantastic job of really slowing

(14:35):
her down and Georgia Moore last night. So now we
see it against LSU. How can Texas slow down any somorrow?
In flage A Johnson, we heard from Wiz. Now let's
hear from Kyler Oldacre, who returning close to home, I
think grew up about thirty minutes away, maybe maybe a
little bit, maybe more like ninety minutes. Can't remember, but

(14:56):
Kylo fantastic game. Nineteen points off the bench, five and
nine shooting seven rebounds. She spoke with Roger Ross and
Kathy Arson post game as well.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
She's playing about eighty five miles from her hometown of Cincinnati.
We're talking about Kyla Oldacre and Kyla in the ball
game tonight. With an effort of nineteen points, seven rebounds,
nine of ten from the free throw line. Kyla, you
just look like you're playing with a lot of confidence
on the offensive end.

Speaker 6 (15:24):
Tell me how you're feeling about it.

Speaker 7 (15:26):
I mean.

Speaker 9 (15:28):
I show up every morning before my classes and get
work in, you know, tap on my craft in building
up conference every day in my craft, So why not
show it out in the game.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
You and Taylor have turned into quite a one to
two punch. There's no drop off when you come.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
In headed monster, no rest, nope.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
And then the other little thing though free throws you
hit nine to ten. I mean, you go down there,
you get hacked a lot, but you gotta gotta finish it.
How much pride do you put into that? A lie?

Speaker 9 (15:54):
These last few games before you know again another season.
It's been a rocky start with no free throws. Wasn't
as assistant, and I feel like.

Speaker 6 (16:03):
You know, the beginning of the.

Speaker 9 (16:04):
Season, I was shooting one I already shot one hundred
free throws, but all of a suddeny percent at that time,
and my concenta just went down. So play friends today,
I'm planning it back up where it needs to be.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
I know your first goal is always to get the win.
But being as close to home as you are in Cincinnati,
I'm sure you've got a lot of family and friends here.
What's this effort like a win and obviously a monster
game from you.

Speaker 9 (16:26):
I mean just showing up and wanting to be there
for my team and help my team win, honestly, And.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
Now you get to come home and take on another
top ten team. Yeah all right, Kyla, thanks so much,
excellent game.

Speaker 7 (16:37):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
Eighty five miles so not thirty minutes away. Eighty five
miles from where she grew up in Cincinnati. Ohhow so,
after the winds over South Carolina in Kentucky, how does
Texas stack up in the latest bracketology? Well, Charlie Cream
from ESPN still as Texas as a one seed, of course,
and I'll benchure the guests. The Longhorns defeat LSU on

(16:59):
Sunday and don't have a hiccup the rest of the way,
they will be a one seed in the NCAA tournament.
Truly historic for coach fix Schaefer squad this season, still
somewhart to do so a month ago, and of course
if you asked him about it, you know he's more
focused on Sunday than he is where the seeding is at.
But if Texas can beat LSU on Sunday and take
care of business before the SEC Women's College Basketball Tournament,

(17:21):
there'll be a top seed in this NCAA tournament. Charlie
Cream has Texas in the Spokane Regional. Of course, the
first two rounds are hosted by the top seed, so
Texas would play at Movie Center in Austin for the
first two rounds, and Charlie Cream has him up against
Tennessee Tech, Florida State, Iowa was a nine seed. Kentucky
also in in Raleigh for the regional against NC State,

(17:44):
but Sweet sixteen Elite eight will be played in Spokane
in Birmingham, so Texas looking to host the first two
rounds of the NCAA Tournament other one seeds UCLA, South
Carolina and Notre Dame, as well two seeds for the
nca Women's Tournament Yukon, Duke, USC and LSU. Currently, the

(18:07):
projection so far would still about a month left in
the season. Real Quick last night Top twenty five matchup
between USC and UCLA delivered a fantastic second half as
the Trojans upset the Bruins top rank Bruins seventy one
to sixty Juju Wakins thirty eight points up in light.

(18:27):
They did a great job holding Lauren Betts to just
eighteen points, a fantastic post player only eighteen points in
the game, thirteen rebounds, but USC shooting forty four percent
from beyond the arc to win this game. The Bruins
did not shoot the ball well two to thirteen from
beyond the arc, just thirty five percent from the floor,

(18:49):
even though they did out rebound USC by ten, Even
though they did move the ball round thirteen assists to twelve,
it was the Trojans who came out victorious. So Trolie
s Freame still has them at number one. But how does
this affect Texas well? USC will probably jump up quite
a few spots. But the Longhorns beat LSU on Sunday,

(19:13):
then you have three straight wins over three top ten teams,
including two against top five teams. Texas maybe the number
one ranked team come Monday. Now Notre Dame is still
number two. The Fighting Irish do have that head to
head win over Texas earlier this season, so maybe the
Fighting Irish will find themselves ranked number one. But of course,

(19:34):
if Texas does find a way to win on Sunday,
they may be the top ranked team in the country,
but still some work to do on that. More than
come here on this Friday show, Craigway up in Arlington, Texas.
He'll be joining us at the three o'clock hour as
Texas Baseball begins their season against Louisville six forty five
ERID time seven o'clock first pitch right here on thirteen

(19:56):
hundred this zone. But up next Texas Longhorns looking for
a new running back coach? Who is the name that
Texas might be circling up next on the Craig Way Show.
Glad to have you joining us here, whether you're listening
on the free iHeart radio app or in your car
on thirteen hundred to so glad to have you with us.
Of course, you can always join the show by texting

(20:18):
our text line texta word Texas the eight one to
five three zero followed by your message, or leave us
a message on the free iHeart radio app via the
talk back feature. We want to hear from you, and
I don't know if you guys can hear that in
the background, but it's the faint sound of pop music
being played, the crack of a bat, maybe some popcorn beat,

(20:42):
and that's the sound of baseball. It's also the sound
of Craig Way. Because Texas Baseball begins. They're twenty to
twenty five baseball season. The night at the Shriners Children's
College showdown against Louisville six forty five pm airtime, hopefully
seven o'clock first pitch against Louisville, and Craig Way will
have the call with Keith Morland and Craig joining us.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Now, good afternoon, Craig.

Speaker 7 (21:05):
Yeah, let's see if we can give you a little
bit of There we go, popping the mitt on a
warm up pitch right here from Ole Miss, left handed starter.
There it is right there, Ole Miss in Arizona getting
ready to play the second game here. Hey, here's the
best news of the day so far, Cam, this tournament
is on time. Love that at least right now. First
game went about two hours and fifty six minutes something

(21:30):
like that. Oklahoma State, ranked nineteenth of the country in
the preseason favorite in the Big Twelve, held a four
to one lead going into the fifth inning, and then
Clemson scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth,
and two in the seventh. Oklahoma Stated had gotten one
more run in the sixth and there were I think

(21:51):
three runs scored on bases loaded walks over two innings,
and such as the case with early season baseball, that
happened sometimes. But Clemson came back to be the Arizona
State in the first game, or excuse me, to beat
Oklahoma State.

Speaker 6 (22:04):
In the first game.

Speaker 7 (22:05):
And right now Arizona and Ole Miss about to throw
the first pitch of game two, and there it is
a fastball for a strike. So anyway, the event is
on time. Here with the Shriner's Children's College showdown here
at Global Life Field in Arlington, And I understand can

(22:27):
why folks take their shots at domed stadiums. I get it,
especially with regard to baseball because they say it just
doesn't feel the same and it's just didn't have the authenticity.
And of course at Globe Life they have to use
field chirp because the way the field has constructed, the
sunlight never would have reached the parts of the field

(22:48):
that it needed to and the grass would have died.
That was the whole story behind why originally when they
were going to go grass and then needed to switch
to field trip. I get all that, but I will
tell you this, when you have a day like this
outside in Arlington, when you have that kind of day,
then you're happy to be indoors and it's fifty four

(23:10):
degrees with the wind blowing outside, so it's good to
be in.

Speaker 6 (23:14):
It's good to be inside. Put it that way. For
this one.

Speaker 7 (23:17):
It's got a cold, gray afternoon here in Arlington. But
of course, like I said, the events on time and
they're playing and there'll be a hot shot either on
error or a base hit for the leadoff man for
Ole Miss or rather for Arizona, so they're up in
the top half of the first inning. So anyway, yeah,

(23:37):
it's good and there's a lot of excitement obviously for
log worn Baseball and Jim Schlisnegel beginning his time as
head coach at the University of Texas. We'll see how
all that goes. It's a brand new look in a
lot of ways. It'll be a left handed junior transfer
and Jared Spencer, the transfer from Indiana State, who will

(23:58):
go to the mound for the log worn tonight. He
was the guy who earlier in the week of the
media availability, somebody might have been Kirk Bowles from the
Houston Chronicle asked him or somebody asked him if he
if he knew either of the two basketball players for Texas,
and he said, yeah, yeah, and he named him. He
knew obviously, Julian Larry, he knew him. He knew, uh,

(24:22):
you know, both of the long worn guys, and then
said that he talked to both of them before transferring
in because they, of course had transferred in Jason Kent
and Julian Larry both had transferred in together, and he
said that they told him, Yeah, Austin's a lot different
than uh than terorhod Indiana. So it'll be Jared Spencer
as the left hander. He's going to go to the

(24:43):
mound for Texas tonight. So yeah, there's a there's a
great deal of excitement. College baseball is underway. There are
games being played across the country today, and this whole
thing is underway now.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
You know, Craig, I find it interesting you mentioned the
point about it being Jim Sloshneakles first game at Texas.
Texas base Ball has not had a lot of those.
I mean, obviously David Pierce the course moving over from Tulane.
But during your time as a playofy I played broadcast
for Texas Baseball. You've only covered David Pierce, right, because
Augi Torino.

Speaker 6 (25:13):
Augie it was now. When Augie took over.

Speaker 7 (25:18):
For Cliff Gustafson starting in nineteen ninety seven. When he started,
I was not yet on the broadcast. I had not
moved down to Austin. That was in the spring of
ninety seven, and I moved down in the in the
fall of ninety seven. So you're right, But I you know,
this will be the third Texas Baseball head coach I've
worked with, because when I first got down in ninety seven,

(25:41):
in my first baseball season working broadcast was with Keith
Morland and Bill Shooning. But I was I was the
third alternate or the second altar if you will, or
even I guess you'd say the first alternate because it
was it was Bill and Keith and then and then
if Keith had a a conflict with something, then I

(26:02):
would fill in.

Speaker 6 (26:02):
And I think I did.

Speaker 7 (26:03):
Somewhere around thirty games that first year working with but
that was you know, working with Aggie back then, but
he had already been in place as they head coach.
So you're right, this is only the second coach that
I will have worked with coming into the job, like
David Pierce in twenty seventeen and now Jim Schlasnegle here

(26:24):
in twenty twenty five. So yeah, it's you know, I
went through a long time CAM where there wasn't any
coaching change. I was when I was first, when I
was as the analyst, and then when it overlapped into
the time when I took over the play by playing
O two because you had Mac Brown and football, you
had Rick Barnes and men's basketball, you had Jody Conrad

(26:45):
and women's basketball, and he had Augie Garito in baseball.
And I did not even experience a coaching change for
the first five or six years on it. It was
when Jody decided to retire. You know, seven was the
first time that I had, you know, experienced a coaching
change as a broadcaster. Certainly is the play by play voice.

(27:08):
So so that was new. And obviously there have been
some changes since then. Uh there've been you know, uh
three more with basketball and uh and then of course
with women's basketball, there's been a couple more. Uh, but
it's been It's it's you know, it's the stability that
folks like to refer to. That's a big part of
why success happens with intercollegiate athletic programs if you have

(27:32):
that stability not only with the head coach, but with
the coaching staff. And by the way, Cam and I'm
sure you've probably touched on this, it brings to mind
what Sark is having to do in terms of, you know, uh,
replacing pieces of his coaching staff. We knew about Blake
Gideon leaving to be the defensive coordinator Georgia check and

(27:53):
now it's a shar choice leaving to be to join
the Detroit Lions coaching staff. It's it brings change, and
you know, Sark probably has had his short list of
guys that is that he has to go to if
he loses somebody, And we all, i think probably knew
that it was coming to a point where we were

(28:13):
going to see to Shard choice uh move on to
another position, perhaps in the NFL, because his star was
on the rise. I think we'd all seen it down here,
but it had been seen when he was at Georgia Tech.
It had been seen in his brief time, you know,
with the Cowboys. I think folks knew that that was
a guy whose career was definitely surging and trending upward,

(28:36):
and it was only a matter of time. I think
the same could be said for Blake Gideon, and it's
a great opportunity for Blake at Georgia Tech. Conversely, that
you know, Sark goes back to work and uh and
fills those spots. So that's you know, then then you see,
But one thing Sark has really done is he's done
an outstanding job of getting guys when he has had

(28:57):
to make some changes within the staff, hasn't had to
make a lot, But when he's done, when he has
done that, it's it seemingly has worked out really well
for him.

Speaker 1 (29:06):
Yeah, I think back to when Stan Drayton left to
take the Temple job in Texas fans like, man, we
just lost one of the best coach in the coaching staff.
Who are you gonna find? Oh the shard choice? What
has he done? And then here we are three four
years later with the same thing. So Sart does show
that he's I think he's has a stellar track record
of hiring assistant coaches.

Speaker 6 (29:24):
Yep.

Speaker 7 (29:25):
And and I think the latest example that was Kenny
Baker coming in on the defensive front with what he
what he's done. So you know there's that that is.
That's a good thing. Let me ask you, were you
able to get to some Vic Schafer sound.

Speaker 6 (29:41):
In the first hour of the program?

Speaker 2 (29:42):
I saved it all for you.

Speaker 7 (29:43):
Oh okay, all right, well we're gonna do that now.
I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you what we're gonna do
when we're gonna come back from this break. See, I'm
gonna impede on Roger Wallace's chance for him to catch
his breath since he just came up there. But Roger
was in lexing, Kentucky last night to call that Texas
women's game. And of course I'll be back there and

(30:04):
Roger will be with Keith for tomorrow night's game against
ole Miss and Sunday evening's game against Oklahoma State. And
I'll be back in Austin for tomorrow nights men's basketball
game against Kentucky and Sunday's women's game against LSU. But
we'll get Roger to join us here for a couple
of minutes. We'll talk about the women, and we'll hear
from Vick Schaeffer as well. So we got all that
and more coming up. Where we are at Globe Life

(30:26):
Field in Arlington. Second game is underway Arizona and ole Miss,
and I knew I was gonna Jinson the minute I
said that things were on time. They're having to go
to a replay review to see if a pitch hit
Jason White, the batter at the plate for Arizona with
a three to two count with two down here in

(30:48):
the top half of the first inning. So we'll keep
everybody updated on that game for now. Texas and Louisville
are expected to begin on time at seven o'clock. Right here,
I'm thirteen under the Zone.

Speaker 10 (31:08):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
Craig Way.

Speaker 10 (31:13):
Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.

Speaker 7 (31:18):
We're a globe white field here in Arlington. Cam Parker,
the producer, back in the studio. The replay review did
allow the Arizona runner to reach first base, but ole
Miss got out of the inning without further damage. So
it's in the bottom of the first ole Miss is
batting scoreless against Arizona. This is the second game here

(31:39):
in the Shriners Children's College showdown here on this Friday afternoon.
The first game started at eleven o'clock this morning, and
Clemson rally from a four to one depthsit to beat
Oklahoma State six to five in the first game. So
right now things are on time, and the Texas Louisville
game for tonight is still scheduled for seven o'clock first pitch. Obviously,

(31:59):
we'll keep you posted on that as well as this
game as well. All right, As I mentioned, of course,
this is what I like to refer to as the
overlap time of year. Actually, in truth, I like to
say overlap Roman numeral two because the first one happens
in November. In the December between football and then men's
and women's basketball. Overlap Roman numeral two always starts around

(32:23):
the third week in February second or third week, and
it's men's and women's basketball being overlapped by baseball and softball,
so it's an extremely busy time for all of us.
I'm real excited about all of that. Obviously, it stretches
us out a little bit, but we're primed for it,
and that's why Roger Wallace was last night in Lexickentucky

(32:43):
when I had long worn weekly with Rodney Terry. And
Roger will be here to call tomorrow night's game on
the Zone with Keith Morland. Keith will be with us
all three games here and throughout the vast majority of
the games this season, and Roger and Keith will call
the game against Old Miss here tomorrow night and then
Sunday evening against Oklahoma State while I head back for
men's basketball tomorrow night against Kentucky and women's basketball can

(33:05):
tell us you on Sunday.

Speaker 6 (33:07):
So I think we got all that that part. Now.
We're kind of getting used to this overtime though, aren't we.

Speaker 3 (33:11):
I'm surprised that with a two o'clock game Sunday, couldn't
you you could make it? About the second third end
crossed my mind, but.

Speaker 6 (33:19):
I thought, yeah, it's probably better just like that.

Speaker 3 (33:23):
Yeah, this should be fun and hopefully they can get
rid of some scar tissue in this building this time
of year.

Speaker 6 (33:28):
I know everybody talks about this.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
They have had some success in the Big twelve tournament here,
but this tournament obviously is has been rough on longhorns.

Speaker 7 (33:36):
You know, I think it's really weird. What what stands
out of my mind?

Speaker 6 (33:40):
Or two things?

Speaker 7 (33:41):
One you mentioned the shortcomings in in tournament play here
in conference fermament Uh, But I also remember that remember
that wh when Oklahoma agreed to move that that conference
series here and Texas took two out of three in
that series, and and and the jenist of that was

(34:01):
Oklahoma had an early season home series against Northwestern State
and there was no way they were going to be
able to play it. They could see the bad weather
coming toward Norman. There's gonna be snow and ice and
all that stuff that happens there in February, and Skip
Johnson and the Oklahoma staff contacted the Globeli like people
and said, hey were the Rangers Entertainment Division, REV Sports,

(34:23):
I think it's called REV Entertainment, and said could you
open the doors and let us come in and play
that series, and the marketing people that they are, they said,
why sure, but you know, we probably wouldn't make enough
money just to pay the light bill. Would you be
willing to move one of your conference series here later
in the year, And they said, sure, which one?

Speaker 6 (34:43):
And he went Texas.

Speaker 7 (34:45):
So they agreed the move the series and the log
runs ended up taking two out of three, had a
shot to sweep it, but wound up taking two out
of three, including the Sunday And I always remember you
talking about there. There was a young reporter down on
the field who asked, David Pierce, would you be willing
to do this every year? And she meant it I
think like a Texas ou football thing, and so would

(35:05):
you be willing to do it?

Speaker 6 (35:06):
And what was his response?

Speaker 7 (35:07):
It was like, yeah, as long as it's their whole
Yeah exactly.

Speaker 3 (35:11):
I mean they obviously that's that's huge for Texas to
being able to play here. And and if we if
we look back to that season, I think that was
kind of one of the launching points into a really
successful uh close pretty sure. They went to Omaha that
year yep as well, So yeah, it's not been all
all bad. Just in February. Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Speaker 7 (35:28):
So, uh, well, we'll see how they do here Ole
miss with a runner at second and a runner at
first with two down here in.

Speaker 6 (35:35):
The bottom half of the person thing.

Speaker 7 (35:36):
Okay, let's let's discuss uh women's basketball. And we've watched
the evolution of this team throughout the course of the
season and as the days and weeks have gone by,
and and Cameron was just listening to the zoom conversation
with Vick Schaeffer and and we'll hear some of that
sound coming up a little later on. But uh, you know,

(35:59):
we're seeing this team become a much more complete, dangerous team,
if for no other reason than the emergence of Kyle
Oldacre here in the second half.

Speaker 6 (36:09):
Of the season.

Speaker 3 (36:10):
Yeah, she was outstanding and it was again, it was
very similar to Sunday kind of that one to two punch,
and it happened with Taylor Jones doing work early and
then Kyla came in in the second quarter and she
was outstanding. And boy, it helps when bigs can hit
their free throws because she was nine to ten from
the line, of course, playing close to home, about eighty
five miles from Cincinnati, so she was excited about that.

(36:31):
She didn't get too excited about anything. When I asked
her in the postgame about that, she just kind of
smiled and continued with the developmental aspect of her game
at Texas. But yeah, that's quite a combination, and they
keep finding ways to win in different ways. We thought
this might be kind of attract me. Kentucky's a high
scoring team. Texas is a high scoring team, but it

(36:54):
turned into a low scoring game. And Craig, I think,
you know the old shot chart with the pencils, the
shot I think in the first it was just like
a four year old got a hold of a big
black pencil and just scribbled right under the basket. I
don't think they hit a shot outside of four feet
until very late in the first half. I think Brown
and Preston had a little pull up from about eight feet,

(37:15):
but they couldn't buy a basket from the perimeter. But
they went in inside and just brutalized Kentucky inside either
getting points or getting to the line.

Speaker 7 (37:23):
Yeah, and now you know, going into the game last
Sunday against South Carolina, the thing that kept going through
my mind is this is going to be a test
to see if they can find their own shots, create
their own shots and not get muscled off the line.
And they did all that, and they hit shots, and
they were physical enough and they rebounded well enough.

Speaker 6 (37:45):
Because South Carolina doesn't have a lot of bigs inside.

Speaker 7 (37:47):
This is a different deal with Sunday because LSU have
size inside. But I do think that Texas has at
the very least the equal, if not even beyond that
in terms of the back court and wing play.

Speaker 3 (38:00):
Yeah, and you hope they can shoot the ball a
little bit better than they did another rough night shooting
for Rory Harmon. We know how she can affect the
game in so many ways, but it sure helps when
you get a six for eight performance like she had
a couple of games ago to go with everything else
she provides. But yeah, you love to think you can
just keep pounding it in and you're going to have success.
But you know, Kim Walk's too good at coach. I

(38:21):
think to let that happen over and over unless it's
just a mismatching. Kathy Harston with me last night said
she thought Kentucky's biggs, even though they're tall, but they're
very lean and they wouldn't be able to handle Texas
As bigs because they are tall, and you know they
are thick as well. And she was exactly right. Clara Strak,
who has big numbers, went scoreless and fouled out and

(38:44):
was not a factor. And that's one of those six
foot four but very wiry bigs in Texas just dominate
inside the paint. And it was a cool atmosphere, Craig,
it was, if not a sellout, within one hundred or
so of a sellout there Jim holds about sixty two hundred.
And it was a great atmosphere. Texas handled everything. And
then you know that second half. Texas dominates the third quarter,

(39:05):
they outscore twenty four to ten, take that big lead
in the fourth. What can happen? Well, Kentucky goes on
a ten oh run, and I think a minute forty one.

Speaker 6 (39:13):
Seconds is real quick.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
After a ten point second quarter or a third quarter
and a eleven point second quarter, Vick calls a timeout
and then Texas goes on a ten oh run and
they restore order.

Speaker 7 (39:23):
Yeah, yeah, and then so they finished on there. So
I would say this, and we'll hear what Vic has
to say about how the long word's going to have
to navigate three games and six days that sort of thing.

Speaker 6 (39:38):
After they have eight days off, and.

Speaker 7 (39:40):
I think it's important to point that out because it'll
be over eight days between games. After the game Sunday,
they don't play until a week from Monday. It happens
against Georgia, but that starts the final three games of
the regular season, and it's three games and six days.
They have a Monday game on the road, come back home,
they have a Thursday game in Startville and his return
to Mississippi State, and then the regular season finale on

(40:03):
Senior Day, Senior Night against Florida. So they're gonna they're
gonna have those games that they're gonna have to deal
with and or Senior Day on that Sunday afternoon. So
it's again, you know, a total I guess seven total
calendar days, but six days in between those three. But
I would submit to you this, if they find a
way to win this game this Saturday. VIC don't want

(40:25):
to hear this, but it's a downhill run to it
at the very least a share of the SEC title,
because those are three games where they're going to be
substantially favored to win all three of those. Gasissippi State's
not bad and it is a road game, but still
they're going to be substantially favored in all three of
those games to finish it out. And then you're talking

(40:46):
about finishing twenty nine and two and fifteen and one,
and I'm sure in solid possession of a number one
seed of the four in the NCAA Tournament and at
the very least sharing the SEC time, I'll probably with
South Carolina.

Speaker 3 (41:01):
Yeah, because if they obviously they beat LSU, that's their
second loss, so they couldn't catch if Texas as long
as Texas wins out. But yeah, I don't think there's
any doubt you could go as far as seeing if
they beat LSU barring just a collapse in one of
those games. And yeah, they're probably a number one seed
as well regardless. But you know, with the NBA tournament
the way it is, one or two, you know, you know,

(41:23):
you get to play two at home and then you
go to that neutral site Birmingham or Spokane. Yeah, and
so kind of eliminates any kind of advantage unless you're
closer to home than they will be no matter what.

Speaker 6 (41:35):
And I know Vic has a lot to say about it,
Yeah he does. He definitely does have to say.

Speaker 7 (41:40):
And I will also tell you this because I know
some folks have asked me about it.

Speaker 6 (41:44):
So this morning I did the research. I dug into it.

Speaker 7 (41:48):
When I was asked what happens of Texas and South
Carolina tie for the SEC regular season title. Both only
have one loss in conference play was against one another,
what is the tie break?

Speaker 6 (41:59):
Who is the number one seed? And you know what
the answer is, Well.

Speaker 3 (42:02):
Logic would tell me how they did against the next
team in the standings.

Speaker 6 (42:05):
But I'm gonna guess that's not it.

Speaker 7 (42:06):
Well not because they wouldn't have lost against the next
team in the standings.

Speaker 3 (42:09):
It's right, So okay, it's point differential. Call it in
the air coin flip.

Speaker 7 (42:14):
If that was my next response, it's gonna be a
coin flip. And so so I can say, you can
take this to the bank. If the log Worns win
on Sunday against LSU and then run the table and
do that. And I'm expecting South Carolina to do the same.
They have a pretty favorable schedule. I know they start
to play Kentucky, but they got a pretty favorable schedule
to close it out. There's gonna be a coin flip

(42:34):
in the Commissioner's office to see who draws the number
one seed.

Speaker 6 (42:38):
For the SEC tournament.

Speaker 7 (42:39):
And for those who said, well, what's the big deal
about that, they're probably both as sure to being number
one seeds in the NCAA tournament, You're right about that.
For the SEC tournament, though, it's one less round that
you might have to deal with Maulkey again. Yep, you know,
because whoever is the two seed is probably gonna see
LSU would be the three and you're probably going to
see them in the semifinal rounds.

Speaker 6 (42:58):
So that would be about the most end you know.

Speaker 3 (43:00):
The flip side of this closing schedule for Texas, you
look at Kentucky, a team that you know, when they
went to that Old Miss game, they were tied in
the lost column with Texas, LSU and South Carolina. They
could struggle down the stretch. They're back into their Hutsburg
win SEC schedules really tough.

Speaker 7 (43:15):
Yeah yeah, all right, coming up, we are going to
hear from Vick Schaeffer.

Speaker 6 (43:20):
We'll do that.

Speaker 7 (43:21):
This ball game's in the top of the second inning.
Arizona and Ole Miss are scoreless here and this is
in the second game here of the Shriners children's college Showdown.
The first game again saw Oklahoma State have a four
to one lead, only to see Clemson rally back to
win that one six to five.

Speaker 6 (43:41):
And of course.

Speaker 7 (43:41):
Texas and Louisville scheduled for tonight at seven o'clock. Right here,
Unningham thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 2 (43:51):
We're back.

Speaker 10 (43:52):
It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
and boys of the Texas Longheards.

Speaker 7 (43:58):
Craig Way here on a Friday afternoon on Valentine's Day.

Speaker 6 (44:08):
I'm not going to be so.

Speaker 7 (44:11):
Insensitive, Cameron is to ask you if you know, if
you're having the handle of Valentine's responsibility or anything like that.

Speaker 6 (44:19):
I'm not.

Speaker 7 (44:19):
That's That's not me. I'm not doing that. I just
just wanted to give you the heads up there. You
know you know me better than that, Craig.

Speaker 1 (44:25):
Of course, now, I'm not gonna fuff that scam of
a holiday come.

Speaker 7 (44:29):
That's right, That's right. You think it's all a big
marketing scam, don't you.

Speaker 6 (44:33):
That's right?

Speaker 7 (44:34):
And you know a lot of people I not think
that it's all about flowers and candy and cards and
all that kind of stuff and expensive dinners and things.
Of that nature, right of course. Yeah, okay, all right, and.

Speaker 1 (44:49):
I'm guessing for the same way because you're spending your
Valentine's Day at Globe Life Field, right, Roger Wallace too.

Speaker 7 (44:55):
Yeah, but I have my Valentine with me. Okay, she's here,
so so that's okay. So that that that works out,
That works out, okay. So, uh, let's let's hear a
little bit from Vick Schaeffer. Uh, Texas women's head coach
coming off the wind in Lexington.

Speaker 6 (45:12):
Uh, what time did you guys get back last night? Roger?
Do you remember?

Speaker 7 (45:16):
Twelve thirty, little after midnight last night is when they
got back. And uh and Vic back on the zoom today,
And so let's let's hear for some opening comments from
the long Warrens head coach.

Speaker 11 (45:26):
Got in late last night. Obviously, kids played really hard. Yes,
last night, I'm really proud of them. Not our best
night offensively, but our two headed monster was outstanding, and
Booker was Booker.

Speaker 6 (45:42):
And uh, you know, I.

Speaker 11 (45:45):
Thought Rory Rory was really special defensively on a more
her and and Jordan Lee really did a good job
on her. And so I think she was three for
twelve at halftime ended up six for I don't know,
five for sixteen, yeah, five for sixteen, And you know,

(46:05):
we really think we held that team to thirty four
forty nine points. That team is so good offensively, and
they obviously have had a heck of a year, had
lost at home all year, and other than the two
minute stretch to start the fourth corner, our kids we
were pretty good.

Speaker 2 (46:22):
We kind of started off a little.

Speaker 11 (46:23):
Slow, but we ended the half on the right note
and then started the third quarter the way you want
them to do. So it's a great win, another another
top ten win for our kids. But we're, you know,
we're we got to get ready. Elish's been sitting at
home all week. They've had their by this week, you know,
and and so they've been sitting there all week getting ready.

(46:46):
And we're we're, you know, we're in the midst of
a four game gauntlet, you know, three top tens in
another top twenty, So nobody gonna feel sorry for you.
You got to get ready, and and uh, you know,
I know our kids will be excited to play on Sunday,
excited about you know, the opportunity, and uh so proud

(47:08):
of them for the win last night. We got in
about one, which is not as late as some of
our other trusts.

Speaker 2 (47:13):
Was that's still pretty late. And I know Booker at
A and a M class this.

Speaker 11 (47:17):
Morning and as well as some of our others, so
I'll be anxious see them and waits and uh, we'll
have a good film session today and and.

Speaker 2 (47:26):
Get ready to play. Obviously a really good L s
U team.

Speaker 11 (47:31):
Really got great guard play, got got a monster monster
for player and andmorrow, and uh, you know, we're we're
gonna have to really really really play our best. They're
they're really physical, really tough, and so if you don't
bring those two things to the game, you know, the
rest of it really doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (47:52):
So we're gonna have to really bring that.

Speaker 11 (47:54):
Toughness and uh that that we got to bring, you know,
night and night out really in this league, but especially
when you play people like South Carolina and LSU, because
that's who they are.

Speaker 7 (48:07):
You know. There were a lot of things that I
just gleaned from those words from Vick Schaeffer, but I
gotta tell you, cam one of the things that stood
out to me was the fact that he said that
Madison Booker had an eight o'clock class this morning. Now,
did you ever have an eight o'clock class on a

(48:28):
Friday morning?

Speaker 1 (48:28):
I did, and it was the the In that class,
I got my worst college grade letter grade.

Speaker 2 (48:33):
It was eight am. That's tough.

Speaker 7 (48:35):
Yeah, I've had a day I had eight am classics,
never on a Friday. I didn't want to have it
on a fee. Uh So, I don't know. I guess
that has to do with you know.

Speaker 1 (48:45):
It's it's usually ut classes either it's Tuesday Thursday, or
it's Monday, Wednesday, Friday. So if she got stuck with Wednesday, Monday,
Wednesday Friday. Hopefully though, it's something something chill like college
sports media and not like chemistry or biology.

Speaker 6 (49:00):
Really yeah, yeah, there you go.

Speaker 7 (49:03):
Here's another comment from Vic Shaeffer asked about Rory Harmon. Now,
you know, Rory hasn't had her best offensive games of
latent terms of point production. She still distributes the basketball well,
but she has been a monster on defense. And so
the question was, is she back to her defensive Player

(49:23):
of the year level of defense that she had prior
to the knee injury.

Speaker 2 (49:27):
Yeah, defendsively. She looks really good to me. I mean,
she was stepped for step last night with a more.

Speaker 11 (49:33):
And that kid's been player of the Week in our
league several times.

Speaker 2 (49:37):
She's a fifth year senior. She's got all.

Speaker 11 (49:40):
The moves and Rory's Rory's quickness and just her ability
to shadow people. You know, she just she can really
stay toe to toe, hip to hip with.

Speaker 2 (49:54):
People, hard to shake Rory Harmon.

Speaker 12 (49:57):
And it just it's amazing to me when I watch her, knowing,
you know, where she what happened, where she was, and
now where she is.

Speaker 2 (50:08):
She's just she's really amazing.

Speaker 11 (50:11):
But she's impacting the game so much on that end,
and then running our team and having a presence, and.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
So, you know, I think she's defensively, she looks really
good to me.

Speaker 6 (50:25):
All right.

Speaker 7 (50:26):
So there's a couple of comments there from Vic Shaffer.
We'll hear some more from him before the program's done.
This afternoon, this baseball game between Arizona and Old Miss
has moved to the top of a third inning. It
is still scoreless between the Wildcats and the Rebels. And incidentally,
I know some other folks have asked the question. Schla's

(50:48):
talked about it the other day. You know, why is
Texas playing Old Miss a team out of their own conference?
In this event. There's a couple of things at work
here on that. First of all, they don't face each
other in the regular season this year, because in the SEC,
you don't play every school in the conference on your schedule,
on your league schedule. In Texas and ole Miss are

(51:10):
not scheduled to meet this year, So that's why this
is easily able to be counted as a non conference game.
The other thing to keep in mind, and Schloss pointed
this out, and I know him to be correct on this.
When David Pierce was the coach, he agreed to this
rotation having already seen the SEC schedule for twenty twenty five.

(51:31):
When this was set up last year, he already had
the SEC schedule for twenty twenty five, so he knew
that Texas and ole Miss would not be playing a
conference play and that's why he was able to agree
to that matchup.

Speaker 6 (51:45):
Even though you know there's another team. You know, there's two.

Speaker 7 (51:48):
Other teams here that they could have played, and they're
playing right well. One of them is playing right now, Arizona,
and then the other one would be Clemson. They could
have played either of those other two. But the way
it worked out, it'll work out where they get a
really good non conference test from ole Miss, a game
that won't count in the conference standings. Arizona batting in
the top of the third with the leadoff man a

(52:09):
board hit by a pitch, so scoreless. Top of the
third Arizona and ole Miss. Texas and Louisville scheduled for
seven o'clock tonight. We'll talk some men's basketball up next
when we continue on AM thirteen under the Zone, third
and final hour of the program from Globe Life Field
in Arlington and Arlington on a dank, gray, overcast, cold,

(52:31):
windy kind of day. It's in the mid fifties, but
it feels a lot chillier outside. Fortunately we're indoors, of course,
the roof covering the playing surface here at Global Life Field,
home of the Texas Rangers and home of the Shriners
Children's College Showdown three games per day today, Tomorrow and Sunday,

(52:52):
and the Texas log Worn baseball team opens its season
here this weekend with three night games. They'll play tonight
scheduled seven o'clock first pitch against Louisville. We always see
scheduled because of the link of the other two games,
and you have to have a minimum time of forty
five minutes on the field with the teams to warm up.
But so far, we'll knock on wood. Things have moved

(53:14):
pretty much on time. The first game was on time,
Clemson rallying back from a four to one deficit in
the fifth inning. They got two in the fifth, one
in the sixth, two, and the seventh gave up one
run but held on and beat Oklahoma State six.

Speaker 6 (53:26):
To five to come back and win that game.

Speaker 7 (53:28):
This second game right now is in the top of
the fourth inning, so they moved just past the one
hour mark and it's scoreless between Arizona and Old Miss.
Of course, the long Horns play Old Miss tomorrow night.
It's a non conference game tomorrow night between those two
as Ole Miss and Texas are not on the same schedule,

(53:48):
so they'll they don't play each other in conference play,
so they will play tomorrow night and then Texas will
play Oklahoma State.

Speaker 6 (53:56):
They're all Big Twelve four on Sunday evening.

Speaker 7 (53:59):
Oklahoma State came in and as the favorite preseason favorite
to win the Big Twelve this year.

Speaker 6 (54:04):
And they're gonna be tough. They can really swing the bat.

Speaker 7 (54:07):
They still have guys like Colin Brigaman and ar Hart
and all those other guys who can really swing the bat,
but they're pitching. Let him down today the bullpen that
there were three of Clemson's five un answered runs were
scored via bases loaded walks, and so that was a
big part of it as well. But the Longhorns will
play them on Sunday evening. It's a busy weekend, as

(54:31):
we've pointed out with Long Worn Basketball. We're gonna hear
from Rodney Terry a next segment coming up talking about
this matchup with the Kentucky Wildcats tomorrow night, seven o'clock
tip off at Moody and you can hear that game
on ninety eight point one FMKVET. Of course, all three
baseball games from here in Arlington will be here on

(54:51):
thirteen under the Zone tonight.

Speaker 6 (54:53):
Keith Morlan will join me for the call of tonight's game.

Speaker 7 (54:56):
I'll head back to call the Long Worn men's basketball
game it's Kentucky tomorrow evening with Eddie Orrin, and then
Sunday the Texas women's game. On Sunday as the log
Orange will play LSU. Huge match up there for Texas
women's basketball and Roger Wallace will step in for me
up here on the Saturday and Sunday games, as Texas

(55:16):
will be in action on Tomorrow night, as I mentioned
against Hole, missing on Sunday against Oklahoma State. And then
on top of all of that, Cameron Parker, you have
NBA All Star Weekend and you're really really fired up
about all that, aren't you.

Speaker 2 (55:31):
I'm sorry, do you say all Star weekend?

Speaker 7 (55:35):
But see you're an NBA guy though, see, so I
mean you should be fired up for this showcase weekend.

Speaker 1 (55:41):
Right if it was like twenty years ago and you know,
Kobe Bryant was still playing it one the cross dudes
up and cuss him out afterwards, then yeah. But there's
no there's no intensity to these games. I mean, what
we got like four different teams. Nobody knows who's on
each team or even what the format is or what's
going on. It's it's it's become like the Probo Pro

(56:03):
Bowl in the NFL, where it's just oh it is
that on today, Okay, whatever, move on with your day.

Speaker 7 (56:10):
I think I think it's because they've changed the format
with these All Star games so often with basketball, with
the NHL, uh the only one that doesn't really get changed,
is baseball. They have a couple of wrinkles with it,
but by and large, the game has played as it was.
And we were in this facility back in July and
we were up here to see the Baseball All Star Game.

(56:32):
And even though there weren't a lot of runs scoring,
the game it was it was. It was a good night. Right,
We've got to got a chance to see shoey Otani
with a home run. We got a chance to see
the American League get the win in that one, and
it and uh, it was. It was a lot of fun.
But you know, it's the closest thing to a real game.
And even then, you know they're they're using one pitcher

(56:53):
an inning. So it's it's a little bit different, but
it is it more closely resembles, say, what we watch
during the course of the regular season, as opposed to
you know, what we're seeing, you know, in these other
All Star games in the NBA.

Speaker 6 (57:09):
And then now this business of three.

Speaker 7 (57:11):
Teams, one for Charles Barkley, one for Kenny Smith, and
one for Shack and then.

Speaker 6 (57:16):
The Rising Stars.

Speaker 7 (57:18):
Does anybody really think the Rising Stars have any shot
against those.

Speaker 6 (57:21):
Other three teams?

Speaker 2 (57:22):
I don't think so. I don't think so.

Speaker 7 (57:24):
I mean, they're good young players, but you're going up
against teams with.

Speaker 1 (57:29):
But hey, maybe maybe they'll actually care, maybe they'll care
about it versus you know, the other teams are just
kind of like, yeah, we're just here for the weekend
and the extra money and whatnot. So I don't know,
you know, I would not bet on this. I would
stay away from from betting on this type of formatt
but you know, let's.

Speaker 7 (57:47):
See, yeah, and yet there are people who will bet
on it, right, sure, they'll still be the money going on.
And then, of course the biggest joke of all of
these is what has become of the Pro Bowl, you know,
the football one for the NFL, because you know, I

(58:08):
understand where tackling was going to be at a premium
in the past when they played this, but you could
kind of get passed a little bit of that, just
like NHL All Star Games. You're you know, you could
you could deal with eleven to nine or nine to
seven of the final score. What you're still seeing the
skill on display, But don't come at me with flag
football and expect me to be entertained by it.

Speaker 1 (58:30):
And it's so hard Craig to in like, all take
the defense the players here, like, you know, an NBA
All Star break or NHL All Star break when it's
during the regular season, What's what is the incentive for
wanting to play hard? Because what do you get hurt?
You know what, what if SGA goes out for the
thunder and gets hurt on Sunday and then he's out

(58:51):
for the second half. So your coach, your front office,
your GM, everybody is like, yeah, you know what, why
don't you take it easy? You know, why don't you
just put some threes up? The same thing for NHL
for the Pro Bowl. These guys just had a long season, right.
The NFL is even longer now, it's probably going to
expand next season. Some of these guys had a growing playoffs.
They probably have come to Hawaii or wherever the Pro

(59:13):
Bowl's at now already injured, maybe, you know, trying to
heal it from an injury. Why do they want to
go out and play sixty minutes of football when the
season's over with?

Speaker 2 (59:23):
Right, So what is the incentive for these guys?

Speaker 7 (59:25):
Now?

Speaker 1 (59:25):
You know MLB All Star used to be the winner,
the winner of the American League National leagu would host
the World Series, right, they've gone away from that. The NBA,
you know, they've completely gone away from the Eastern Conference,
Western Conference. I don't even know what the NHL does, Craig,
is it was it three on three?

Speaker 6 (59:42):
Yeah? They have various incenters.

Speaker 1 (59:44):
Yeah, and in the Pro Bowl, doesn't you know there's
Team ELI, Team Payton whatever, like you know, it's these
guys are just getting paid to show up and kind
of just do some light cardio. So for on their defense,
I do not know what the incentive is, and I
do not know how to fix it.

Speaker 7 (01:00:00):
There's only one way to fix it. Really, there's really
only one way. If you are serious about making your
All Star Games, be it the NBA. And like I said,
Major League Baseball is the closest thing to replicating a
regular season game that we would attend of the All
Star Games. None of the other ones even come remotely

(01:00:22):
close to what we see. So how do you remedy that?
There's one way? One way only? You got to make
it so incredibly financially lucrative.

Speaker 6 (01:00:30):
To them that they would do it.

Speaker 7 (01:00:32):
You know, if they're agents, and you know their representatives
and their general managers are telling you well, hey, we
don't want you to get hurt or whatever. But you
go out there and if you're on a winning team
you get ten million dollars a man. Then they're probably
going to say, let's suit it up and let's play.

Speaker 2 (01:00:54):
And then if the losers you get nothing.

Speaker 7 (01:00:57):
I don't know that i'd go that route. I think
there would still be maybe ten and five. You know,
just for playing in it, you get five million, you know,
and then if you and then if you're on the
winning side, you get ten million per man, you know.
And don't tell me the NFL doesn't have the money,
because they do have the money. We know they have
the money. So you know, it would if I'm not

(01:01:19):
saying that's the solution, I'm saying it would have to
be something like that. It has to be so attractive
to the players that that that they can't say no,
that there's just it's just too good that the Players
Association won't balk at it. Like the Players Association these

(01:01:40):
days is making noises that they are adamantly opposed to
adding an eighteenth game. Here the the executive director of
the Player Association said, nobody's in favor of that. Yeah, well,
the owners are obviously they want the money there, and
the way you make it worth one is to make

(01:02:00):
it worthwhile for the players. It's just they got to
come in for their cut of it if it's.

Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
Going to be worthwhile with a text coming on the
text lines and the Pro Bowl was always pretty antiseptic.
But the old school NBA All Star Game and especially
Major League All Star Game really captured the imagination the
good old days.

Speaker 6 (01:02:17):
I agree.

Speaker 1 (01:02:18):
I think right now the best All Star game is
the one you mentioned MLB right now, and I think
growing up, the NBA All Star Game used to kind
of capture that. I never really thought the NFL Pro
Bowl really produced a good game, especially because it was
the end of the year and there's so many guys
who withdraw from it in the Super Bowl and stuff.
But I felt like the old school NBA All Star Game,

(01:02:40):
especially during the nineties early two thousands, kind of had
something to it.

Speaker 7 (01:02:44):
Yeah, I agree, And the Baseball All Star Game has
been the best of years now. I will tell you
one thing that I'm not in favor of those goofy
for Cocta uniforms.

Speaker 6 (01:02:54):
We saw them where yeah, yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:02:57):
One of the great things about the Baseball All Star
Game is seeing those guys lined up in their uniform
if if you're if it's in a nash League park,
every guy on the Nash League roster was wearing his
National League home uniform, and every player in the American
League was wearing their American League road uniform, vice versa.
If it was in an American League park. That was
the fun, part of the fun part of that. Always,

(01:03:18):
I never wanted to miss the introduction of the All
Stars along the baseline, even if I had to miss
parts of the game for work or something else or
dinner or this or that, I didn't want to miss
the introduction of the All Stars. And even that's kind of,
you know, been altered a bit by them all wearing
that same color uniform. And I understand about marketing and
stuff like that. And and and remember Cam, when we

(01:03:38):
were in the stands here at Globe Life there we
saw a bunch of people wearing those goofy jerseys. You know,
one was like tan color and the other was teal.

Speaker 6 (01:03:49):
It was. It was really weird.

Speaker 1 (01:03:51):
I think what's happened, Craig is with all the new
uniforms and the City edition and connect editions, no one
even knows what their home or away uniform is. That
that's the issue there. We have too many, too many uniforms.

Speaker 7 (01:04:03):
Yeah, yeah, which just gave me an idea. When we
come back from the break, I want you to bump
back with talking heads life during wartime. Okay, I'll explain
Oxplain to come out and we're gonna hear from Rodney
Terry coming up next when we continue. By the way,
still scoreless Arizona ol miss with Arizona batting in the

(01:04:24):
top of the fifth inning in the second game of
these three games, Texas and Louisville scheduled for a seven
o'clock start here tonight, the season opener for Long Worn
Baseball Hunting m thirteen under the Zone.

Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
Back to the Craig Way Show.

Speaker 10 (01:04:41):
Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
Texas to eight one five three zero, followed by your message.
Standard message and data rates may apply.

Speaker 7 (01:05:15):
There's a reason I asked Cameron to bump back with this,
not only because this ain't no party, this ain't no
disco the Saint, no fooling around, and what's the other
that this is no time behind for dancing or lovey dovey.

Speaker 6 (01:05:28):
I got no time for that now.

Speaker 7 (01:05:31):
Now He's got a line in the song near the
end of the song David Byrne does with talking heads,
and it reminded me of what you were saying about
all of the City connect jerseys and the alternate jerseys
and all these other jerseys and pro sports where we're
seeing teams where dark colors both of them on the floor.
At the same time, there's a line at the end

(01:05:53):
of the song where David Byrne says, I've changed my
hairstyle so many times now I don't know what I
look like. And so it made me think of think
about that, you know, because they wear that, Because people,
what are the real colors of the uniform? Every team seems
to have a black in its uniform or an alternate
black jersey. There's even long worn fans are calling for

(01:06:16):
the Longhorns to wear a black helmet or a black
jersey top or whatever.

Speaker 6 (01:06:22):
And Crystal Kanfie has stood.

Speaker 7 (01:06:23):
Firm on that, by the way, and he responds to
a lot of folks you know on Twitter and says, Nope,
we've got class uniforms. We're gonna stick with the Icy Whites,
and we're gonna stick with the burnt orange. And I
always think back to what coach Royle said when somebody
asked him about that when he was the ad back
in the seventies and asked him about that, and he said, hello,
he said these you know, he goes, these are work clothes.

(01:06:45):
We don't want to candy them up. That was the
way he described it back then. The Longgorns, I think
will be in the regular traditional home whites tomorrow night
when they take on the Kentucky Wildcats, and Kentucky will
be in its traditional blue I think coming in important
matchup for Texas, playing another ranked opponent, and they're probably
gonna be a little bit shorthanded again and they're gonna

(01:07:07):
have to deal with guys like Lamont Butler, the outstanding
guard who had transferred in from San Diego State, and
Otega Away who started at O You and Jackson Robinson
who started at BYU. It's a really good basketball team.
And last night Long Worn Weekly with Rodney Terry, we
always have one segment where we do the opponent breakdown,
where we look at the opponent. Here's our conversation about
the Kentucky Wildcats. Well, it's a pretty well known program.

(01:07:30):
The Kentucky Wildcats coming in on Saturday night. How about
your thoughts on what this particular group of Wildcats looked
like and what a job Coach Pope has done with
that group.

Speaker 13 (01:07:44):
I'm gonna piggyback real quick on Candae. Yeah for having
Texas fight. That's true, Texas fight, right that is today true.

Speaker 6 (01:07:52):
Well done, Texas fight for him right there.

Speaker 13 (01:07:55):
That should be an inspiration for my guys right there
showing up today after surgery. Big time answer your question. Uh,
Coach Post done a great job. I mean, uh, he
put together basically a brand new team, you know, and uh,
you know, they got off to a great start. They've
got they shoot the ball extremely well. I mean, Brah's

(01:08:17):
one of the top shooters and all the college basketball
put together.

Speaker 6 (01:08:21):
Uh uh.

Speaker 13 (01:08:22):
The biggs in there that that are that are really good.
Brandon Garrison's playing really well for those guys. Amir Williams
is a really good player. Cards are really another, really
good bigs. Their bigs are really good playmakers for their guards.
You know, Butler's really good. Butler was a starting guard
in San Diego State, you know, on the final fourteen,
you know, and so you know, he put together some

(01:08:44):
really good pieces. They're leading score old way.

Speaker 7 (01:08:46):
Yeah, you know in Oklahoma we played in two years
in Oklahoma.

Speaker 13 (01:08:50):
Strong you know, he scored in double figures over twenty
four games, and you know, and you know he is
really a problem getting to the basket. Strong body great.
But but they they're they're an offensive team. I mean
when he was at YU last year, his teams could
really score the basketball. They spread you out. He's got
a really good playmaker with the big guy though a Warrior,

(01:09:12):
is a really good passer. And uh, you know, they
put a lot of pressure on you defensively with their
spit game, the zoom actions in terms of things you
have to do to protect the basket.

Speaker 2 (01:09:22):
They've got a.

Speaker 13 (01:09:23):
Couple of really good shooters, so shooter defense is gonna
be really important. But they play fast in transition like
everybody in this league. And uh, they've gotten better defensively.

Speaker 7 (01:09:32):
I was gonna ask about it take away because, like
I said, we saw him play for Oklahoma, but it
looks like his game has really developed now as.

Speaker 6 (01:09:39):
Opposed to the time.

Speaker 7 (01:09:40):
Not that he wasn't good at Oklahoma, but but now his.

Speaker 6 (01:09:43):
Game is matured and development.

Speaker 7 (01:09:45):
Like you mentioned the fact he's a slasher and a
guy can can be a real defensive challenge for you
can he was a good player at Oklahoma.

Speaker 13 (01:09:51):
I mean he was a problem last year for us
in terms of a guy that can really put pressure
on the basket. I mean, he has a has a
strong body. I mean, he's a good looking kid. Now
the plays in the NFL, and so he's got great
pedigree in terms of the family there and everything.

Speaker 2 (01:10:05):
But but he's a problem.

Speaker 13 (01:10:07):
And he's improved in shooting every year. Now he can
you know, he can step out there and make a
three as well. But but uh, and he's a really
good defender. You know, he'll be a guy that has
has to go trade quite a bit as well and
everything too. So he gives them a he gives them
a presence on both both sides of the ball.

Speaker 7 (01:10:24):
Is this a team, judging from some of the games
I've seen them players like the Florida game and some
of the other games where he had some real high
scoring games where tempo is gonna mean an awful lot
in this game simply because of the way they can
score the basketball.

Speaker 13 (01:10:37):
No, absolutely, I mean we're gonna have to make them
work defensively and and make them have to go on
to us as well. But uh, you know, value taking
care of the basketball, getting good shots on our terms
is gonna be really important for us. Uh because again
they're gonna play fast, and they can shoot the basketball
and they can put pressure on the basket. You know,
they shot the ball well over the last couple of

(01:10:57):
ball games. I mean, they're shooting really well, much better
in conference play than they even did a non conference.

Speaker 7 (01:11:03):
You made a great point in pointing out how the
game in game out, night in, night out fight in
the SEC. Uh, every single team in this conference has
gone through it where things have been up and then
maybe come back now a little. But even even Auburn
that had had the one conference loss there where things
did not go well for them and then they they

(01:11:23):
bounce back. Tennessee has had some great moments and then
they've lost two games to Kentucky.

Speaker 6 (01:11:28):
Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt.

Speaker 7 (01:11:30):
There's a teams are taking their their shots at other teams, obviously,
and it's such a grind. The mental part of it
is as much as the physical isn't on a night in,
night out basis, I mean.

Speaker 6 (01:11:42):
It really is.

Speaker 13 (01:11:42):
I mean, I think again, you've got to play great
in this league. You know every night. You know you're
not gonna play perfect.

Speaker 6 (01:11:49):
But you have to.

Speaker 3 (01:11:50):
Play really really good every night to win in this league.

Speaker 6 (01:11:53):
Winning in this.

Speaker 13 (01:11:54):
League is really really hard and difficult, uh. And you
have to try to again, you know, be healthy and
try to have your best players available to be able
to play as well because you need you need every guy,
You need every kind in this league. So you know,
that's an important point. That's why I say a lot
of times, you know, we don't give credit to our

(01:12:15):
training staffs because you know, when you come out of
these games after forty minutes, it's it's been a battle.

Speaker 7 (01:12:21):
Yeah, between Warren Young and your strength coach Darby Rich.

Speaker 6 (01:12:25):
Those two guys.

Speaker 7 (01:12:26):
Uh, they've been kind of, as we say, working overtime,
both of those guys, they kind of work in concert,
UNDI in terms of the conditioning as well as the
training physical part of it.

Speaker 13 (01:12:35):
Well, you can go through the game and as a coach,
you're coaching a game and and maybe you didn't see
a play or maybe you didn't see a guy get hurt.
And at the end of the game, and that night
or the next morning, you know, you get the report hey,
it's not gonna be available, you know, the next game
because of something that happened in the game. I mean

(01:12:55):
we Trey Mhonton plays the whole Arkansas game, but didn't know,
you know, early in the latter part of the first half,
he took a really good physical contact play that really
caused the problem for shoulder was almost dislocated, and so
he couldn't play the next ball game, you know.

Speaker 6 (01:13:13):
So, but just things like that you have to be.

Speaker 13 (01:13:15):
An adapt and adjust to. And that's why you have
to have a full allotment of guys as well.

Speaker 7 (01:13:21):
And even guys that you get all the way through
a game might take enough of a physical toll and
palning that you might not have them available practice the
next time. And it's kind of tough. And then when
you don't have your full compliment of guys on the
floor for practices you prepare for the next opponent, it's.

Speaker 13 (01:13:36):
Definitely is challenging. I mean, you still have to try
to have competitive practices.

Speaker 6 (01:13:40):
You just can't practice for a long.

Speaker 13 (01:13:41):
Period of time this day in time, you you know,
you go bout an hour an hour and fifteen at
the most, because you need those guys to be fresh
and ready to go in gage because the games are
so taxing and so hard that you have to keep
your guys fresh this time of year.

Speaker 1 (01:13:56):
That's writing Terry's conversation with Craig Way last night at
Longhorn Weekly with coach Cherry live at the West Campus
Pluckers location off Rio Grande, And to Artie's point about
not being able to practice so aggressively and tough and
a lot of physicality in practice. It's such a tough
league already, but when so many of your guys are

(01:14:18):
already banged up, obviously you want to lay off in practice.
But when it gets to game time and you play
a team like Arkansas who's able to practice a lot
more physicality because they're a healthier team, you see that.
So it's a very tough balance for our team, this
basketball team right now, trying to stay healthy but also
trying to be prepared physically nine to night out in

(01:14:41):
the best conference in college basketball. A quick little preview
with the Kentucky Wildcats. We talked about in the first
hour what Mark Pope has been able to do in
all the transfers he's brought in. Kind of like Alabama,
Kentucky is a team that loves to shoot the three pointer.
They make about ten per game, think about twenty six
per game, thirty eight percent from beyond the arc, that's

(01:15:03):
first in the SEC. Overall, They're not a super big,
imposing team. They've right dound the ball about the same
as Texas, especially on the offensive boards. But they shoot
the ball really well and they move the ball really well.
So for Texas to pull off an upset tomorrow at
Moody Center have to limit the damage done by Kentucky

(01:15:23):
on the three point line. We saw Arkansas, or rather sorry,
we saw Alabama heat up against Texas. Their a team
that loves to shoot the three. Don't shoot it great,
middle of the pack in the SEC, but they shot
it great against Texas fifty nine percent from three seventeen
to twenty nine. I mean, that's absolutely absurd to shoot
fifty nine percent from three, especially in college basketball. You

(01:15:46):
do that, you're going to win the game. So Texas
got to be able to defend the three point line
and limit the transition offense from Kentucky. Craig Way set
the way for a second recording his pregame interview, which

and close out today's program on The Craigway Show on

Speaker 3 (01:16:14):
Texas trying to get the lead back. Here's Preston. Brie
floats it down to old Egger running the floor and
she knocks it down. Texas with the one point lead
in the ball three minutes Togo Preston hesitation contact pull
up jumper is good.

Speaker 4 (01:16:30):
Yeah, the hesitation got her free, just kind of froze
the defender for a split second.

Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
Bri taking it to the bucket, fade away, in and
out and in.

Speaker 5 (01:16:40):
Yeah, Brie is getting really deep into the paint off
of the dribble.

Speaker 3 (01:16:45):
Booker on the move down the paint, lays it up
and in first points for Booker.

Speaker 4 (01:16:49):
Yeah, that is where Booker is at her best right
there in the open floor, grabs the rebound and takes
off with the basketball.

Speaker 3 (01:16:55):
Five point lead again for Texas. One nine to go
here in the second quarter, ten seconds to go here,
Booker now makes her move, gets a screen. Booker crossover,
baseline jumper good three in a row. Four seconds to
go and Tyler gets it off and it's off the mark.
What a finish for Madison Booker and Texas goes to

(01:17:17):
the half with their biggest lead of the game, thirty
three to twenty five. Booker gets it down on the block,
goes up count the basket and she's fouled. Madison Booker
with an N one opportunity. She's hit her last five
shots from the field. Harmon wide open, drops it down
to Taylor Jones who lays it in and gets Vould again.
What an unselfish play by Rory Harmon. She had a

(01:17:38):
wide open fifteen footer, but instead an and one opportunity
for Jones and Texas is up by twenty Rory driving
on Amore backs it in, turns around twelve footter is good.
Oh what a big time for her first basket.

Speaker 5 (01:17:52):
Yeah, what a great answer by Rory Harmon.

Speaker 4 (01:17:54):
The little fade away right there, Kipper dribble live enough
to be able to get the shot she wanted.

Speaker 3 (01:17:58):
Now Jordan Lee does not take the Threeci'll get to
the baseline Booker. That baseline jumper is good.

Speaker 5 (01:18:04):
Yeah, great job by Booker.

Speaker 4 (01:18:06):
Very great patience by Shay Holly to get her the
basketball down on the baseline.

Speaker 3 (01:18:11):
Now Booker baseline jumper. It's good back to back from
book She has fifteen and the lead is back to
eighteen sixty seven forty nine. Long Horns can just dribble
this thing out. What an impressive win on the road
against the eighth ranked team in the country to hold
on to their piece of first place and move to
eleven and one in SEC play.

Speaker 2 (01:18:32):
Sixty seven to forty nine.

Speaker 1 (01:18:33):
Victory over number eight Kentucky last night for the third
ranked Texas Longhorns and now the host fifth ranked LSU
Sunday at Moody Center and what will be a sellout
for Texas women's basketball.

Speaker 2 (01:18:47):
Finic Schaefer spoke.

Speaker 1 (01:18:48):
With the media earlier this morning about the win over
Kentucky and facing LSU and wanted to bring you some
of his sound from this morning at his media availability.
So we'll start out with this and this is a
question that I pose is to Coach Schaeffer this morning.
There's been a couple of games for Texas on the
road midweek games like Kentucky, Texas A and m Ole

(01:19:10):
Miss and then some at home like Tennessee where they're
coming off. You know, a tough schedule for these kids.
And there are games that I'm not gonna say that
we wouldn't notice they would lose. But if you lost,
you think, okay, you know, hey, they just beat number
two South Carolina, you got number five LSU. You know,
maybe it's just a trap game. And at some point

(01:19:31):
in these games Texas, you know, it might be tight.
You know, maybe Texas trails or they did the Kentucky
in the second quarter like A and M the second half,
Ole miss in the fourth quarter. But Texas time and
time again have found a way to pull away and
end the game with some sort of run and pull
out the victory on the road. So I asked Coach Schaeffer,

(01:19:52):
is that a testament to the team's mental strength and
confidence in playing basketball right now?

Speaker 7 (01:19:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (01:19:59):
I think too, it's our ability to adjust, you know,
we get a feel for what the other team's doing.
And then also I think it's our ability to wear
people down. I thought the press was really good last night.
We forced two or three five second counts, but we
just I thought we really kind of wore them down
a little bit as the game went on and you know,

(01:20:21):
I just I feel like, you know, even when when
people have to bring their five players up to set
screens on my guards to get open, that's something a
five player usually doesn't have to do. So it takes
that focus to make sure they're not setting illegal screens
because they don't need an extra file, and it takes
an explosive effort by a point guard to get open.
When you do that over the course of a game,

(01:20:44):
that's just added things that you don't usually have to
do during the course of a game. And so I
think that that's part of it as well, and it's
just part.

Speaker 2 (01:20:53):
Of why we do what we do.

Speaker 11 (01:20:55):
It's you may not get the results in a turnover
or things like that, but I think over.

Speaker 2 (01:21:01):
Course of a game, you wear people out and you wear.

Speaker 11 (01:21:05):
Them down and next thing you know, you got some
point guard pointing to a two guard going, hey, you
get it, I'm going to take this one off you
try to get open, and so I just think that's
what happens, and again that's why we do what we do. Again,
our half court defense has been really good, y'all. Kids
are playing at an incredible level, playing really hard, really tough,

(01:21:27):
and again very intentional. They understand the scalt I watched
this play last night. I watched how intentional we were
defending Kentucky. You know, all facets. We were really good.
So we just got to continue that. The part that
concerns me is when the mental goes, that's when you
kind of get where you're not really focused and you're

(01:21:47):
not intentional, and you're just out there. So just trying
to get them through this weekend and keep them sharp,
keep them focused, and then next week we'll have a
couple of days to kind of get our breath a
little bit, regroup and and kind of recover a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:22:02):
And by regrouping, he means after Sunday, when Texas does
have a midweek by they play l Shoe Sunday, but
then no game during the week until Saturday, when they
return back in action on Saturday. One other note one
to get to from Fixed Shaft from his media availability
from earlier today. Kim Ok obviously a very polarizing head coach.

(01:22:27):
Fick has had a lot of experience coaching against her
when he was the assistant head coach at Texas A
and M, and she was at Baylor for twenty one
years and then the overlap when Texas got to or
when fix shafor got the Texas and Molkie's final year
at Baylor, So there's been some overlap there in some history.
And Vick was asked about what problems do kim Oke's

(01:22:49):
team persent and what makes her such a good head
coach and why does LSU have such a good basketball.

Speaker 2 (01:22:54):
Team this season.

Speaker 11 (01:22:55):
Well, again, I think she's She's always had really good players,
always played pretty hard. Uh, you know, they always have
a good plan. Her assistants do a good job. You know,
she's got a veteran over there that's been been doing
a lot of wars and he does a great job
with her for defensively, So you know, I just think,

(01:23:17):
you know, our teams are always you know, well prepared defensively.
And then you know they always have great guard play
and uh and lord knows they got it right now.
They've got really good guards and and.

Speaker 2 (01:23:31):
So and they're you know, they just they really attack you.

Speaker 11 (01:23:35):
So you've got to really do a good job play
good team defense and and try to do a good
job of limiting them on the things that they're really
good at. And that's hard when you play those kids
because a lot of them can do a lot of things,
so it's just a I think it's a combination of
those things, and probably there's some more stuff in there
that I'm missing.

Speaker 1 (01:23:55):
Texas takes on l s us Sunday, two pm tip
off time, and you can listen to it one forty
five airtime on one O three one, Austin's eighty station,
of course free on the iHeartRadio app. Craigway will have
